The Rider’s Mag - Page 7

Well here it is August the weather has been fantastic, lots of great rides, events and parties happening and plenty more to come! It has been great except for the fact that we here at The Riders Mag are still struggling to keep this leaky, creaky, old boat afloat! Many of you will have already noticed that there wasn’t a print version of the July issue of The Riders Mag, simply by it’s absence from the racks and countertops of your usual outlets! But it was published online through Issuu! Many of you nice folks have already had our current situation explained to them as to what happened, is happening and what is going to happen, going forward with The Riders Mag! If you have been reading the Mag over the past year, you are already aware of some of the many problems that we have encountered since the end of August, last year! In short, our computers had been hacked, we know, or have really good idea of who did it, because as with any self-centred asshole, piece of shit, with an axe to grind, as he leaves his signature all over whatever he does as a calling card, but proving it is an entirely different thing! I don’t have the time, patience or money to pursue it! I just want to get on with it! We have had files go missing or compromised to where they are almost useless, and all kinds of things go wonky! We have had printers start up and print off volumes of paper without anyone in the office initiating any such action (Again signature!)! We have had our Internet, e mails, phones and other stuff not working for weeks on end! I have had my picture files for 2017 and 2018 go missing altogether and although I’ve been able to recover most of them it is a pain in the ass when you are trying to get a Magazine published! Also, our subscription records and shipping files seem to have been compromised to the point where I can’t and won’t trust them until we thoroughly go through them! All these things do not translate into “Happy days are here again!” I tried all kinds of things and spent lots of time, effort and much money to rid us of this nightmare! I came out one morning and opened the door to the shop and was greeted by the strong smell of beer. I turned on the lights to discover that a shelf that once contained many of my Labatt’s 50 collectables had been knocked down apparently by someone seeking access to the router that was on a shelf above my 50 shelf and above my desk and my computers! There was broken glass from rare old bottles and rare aluminum cans burst open and assorted collectable items spread all over my computers, desk and floor! My computers, keyboards, mail and documents that were on my desk were now soaked in beer, some were rendered useless! Lovely! Also, one of the large monitors was also unplugged and partially removed from the wall! I suspect that the shelf being knocked down was accidental and that after the crash the clandestine operation was aborted as it would have made substantial noise! One afternoon we were working away and out of the blue, a slideshow/screensaver full of pictures of the guy The Rider’s Mag - Page 8

who used to work here, his cat, his apartment, out back of where he now works and other assorted images just sprang up on my computer monitor and played until we shut it down!! I snapped! I was absolutely furious and was ready to do drastic stuff that would surely end up with me in jail, until a friend intervened and brought in a computer savvy young man who seemed to have what it took to put things right! We had thought we had problem solved when I hired this young gentleman to come in and fix things! This guy also proved to be useless, as we recently found out that he had an affiliation with the son of the guy who we believe was screwing us over! I was referred to a different guy, or guys, as they are a fantastic Father and Son team out of Bradford by a very trusted friend and they seem to have the done their job and done it well! We now have video surveillance cameras installed that notifies me on my Blackberry should someone drop in uninvited! We have had no problems since! They are John and Adam Zawadzki who own and operate Advanced Solutions @Webtobiz.net, 416 334 8915 or 905 252 2276 if you find yourself in the need of such services! Tell them I sent you! Anyhow with funds depleted and files and such still in disarray, we decided that rather than just stumble around like we had been doing, to stop, we would do the Mag online only for a month or two, (our online statistics are extremely strong!) We would get our house in order, fix everything properly and come back stronger than ever! To keep trying to fix things while publishing, distributing and still covering events would be foolhardy and we would continue to trip over our own feet and just make things worse! Kind of like trying to put a new tire on your motorcycle while riding down the road! So, we are restructuring The Riders Mag, making the changes that are necessary to our survival, redoing our website, Facebook pages, and all the other Social Media stuff that we are involved in! We will be back bigger and better than ever! All accounts and contracts will be adjusted to reflect any months where the Mag wasn’t printed! Please, be patient! It is a work in progress! But please note, there will be changes! I think the days of “Read Free” are behind us and I will be forced to put a nominal price on The Mag! Meanwhile, my own financial state at present isn’t in the best of shape to say the least! Running the Riders Mag for the past 5 or so years has been a drain on my personal funds as I have been subsidizing it with my own savings and pensions! I have come to the point where The Riders Mag needs to pay its own way! JR, (The previous owner/publisher) could well afford it as he has substantial personal wealth. I cannot! I had kept my job driving truck for Canada Cartage where I’d worked for going on 50 years until I injured my left shoulder in a slip and fall accident in a Plaza while collecting my mail over three years ago, that

rendered the left arm pretty much useless! I was forced to retire from the job which I was hoping to keep until I was 72, thus forfeiting my benefit package and any extra income I could bring in! I had hoped that I would have received my settlement from my accident long before this, by Spring or early summer, and just pour it into the Mag and pay off outstanding bills and stuff and keep it going! Now I hear that The Lawyers still have to interview someone else connected with the case and can’t do that until early October! That is not what I or my creditors wanted to hear! Now as I still wait for a settlement from my law suit as it slowly grinds its way through the legal process I find myself sadly lacking funds to continue to throw into The Riders Mag so that I can provide free reading material for the Motorcycling community! The costs associated with publishing, printing and distribution keep escalating, while income derived from advertising alone fails to keep pace! Something has to give! I am dedicated to keeping The Mag alive but have found myself in a bad place right now! I didn’t really want to do it, as the Trike was something that I’d dreamed of and talked about for a long time! I had many sketches that I had drawn long ago of how I wanted it to look and constantly revised them! I had researched different rear ends and suspension systems and a bunch of other stuff that would make it the perfect bike for my usage! When I spotted the fully independent suspension, Mystery Trike, rear ends that Josh from JD Cycle had used in his amazing custom trikes that were on display at one of the Major Motorcycle Shows, I knew that that was the rear end for me! I even brought my buddy Bronson to the Show to check it out and he concurred that that was the only way to go! I cashed in my RRSP and had enough to make my dream come true! I bought the trike from Josh and he went about custom fabricating many things, as I needed extra length and got it to where I needed it by extending the swing arm and fitting it with a long chain! From there things didn’t go exactly according to plan because plans just rarely come together perfectly right out of the gate (If they do, you have real problems as you just haven’t discovered them yet! They are just lurking in the shadows waiting to bite you in the ass!) as things got a little out of hand from time to time and moved way too fast at times! It was then that I truly, somewhat, got an inkling of just how many great friends that I had out there! They came out of the woodwork, thanks largely to the influence and help from of my pal “Dusty”! He had a pile of old Douglas Fir Beams that were owned by another friend Big Jim McConnel who had salvaged them from an old building that he had demolished years ago, sitting in his back yard! He checked with Jim as to availability and cost, and he said I could have them for free! The price was well in line with my budget! Dusty, then, loaded them up and hauled them down the road to another friend, Fred Christensen’s Wood mill, where he cut them into more manageable pieces! Another friend, Jimmy Edgar was getting into custom CNC work and we got him to CNC The Riders Mag logos into the sides and back of the box! Dusty then took those fine wood planks and crafted them into a fantastic, custom-made box and custom fit them onto the back of my trike! It was now back to Bronson’s to further refine the mechanical issues of the trike so it would go down the road properly! This gave me time to take the body parts to Jabber’s Airbrush Studios up in Kirkfield so he could do an amazing paintjob on the body parts! Fred Hale from Strictly V Twin, who runs a great shop up in Pefferlaw along with two his fantastic kids Amy and Ted, supplied the front Fairing, lowers and the reverse gear at really fantastic prices and my buddy Dave Lyons did an amazing job on the Tourneau cover and seat. I went to see Pez at Hog Tunes up in Barrie for the incredible sound system that keeps my foot tapping on my long journeys! There have been many others who contributed to the Trike project and I thank each and every one of them! The Trike has worked even better than I ever really imagined! It certainly does the job! I can haul large quantities of Magazines, T shirts and assorted gear and serves as an instant Riders Mag Booth at any event we travel to! It gets plenty of attention while on the road as well and has even garnered a bunch of trophies at The Supershow, Spring Motorcycle Show and many Show and Shines as well! It is a treat to ride as it still gives you the feel of riding a motorcycle! It corners like a dream and takes to twisty roads like it was made for them! With all these fine attributes and all of these friends coming together for me to make the Trike happen it certainly wasn’t easy to even think about selling it! But it seemed to be my best option! Option 2 would be to shut The Riders Mag or at least the print version down! I decided I would sell my Trike, (Perhaps I could build another some day, but it wouldn’t have the same feel to it, as this had been a true labour of love and had involved so many who just wanted to help!) in hopes of getting enough money to keep it all together and keep the Wolves at bay! Wolves you ask? My small but essential crew needs money to live! Chantel is an intern (who puts tremendous amounts of time and effort into this Mag) receives no financial compensation at this point! Our graphics person is essential to making it work and she has bills to pay and a family to feed if she was to be able to continue! The printer also needs money, as does the CRA, FedEx, Purolator, Canada Post, American Express, Mastercard, Visa, Comwave, Rogers, Hydro, Enbridge and a multitude of others who are all looking for a share of whatever money that I don’t have! My house needs a new roof along with other routine maintenance, the Wonder dogs need to get to the Vet, and Petoonia hasn’t been on the road for over 3 years! When the ads for the Trike went out, the response was very swift! I found that I still have many supporters and friends out there! They didn’t want me to sell it! Some even organized a campaign to save it and gather money to help out! They showed up at Port Dover for the recent Friday 13th celebration with buckets and went around collecting donations! This isn’t my style and I had asked them not to, but to no avail, they did what they set out to do and then showed up in Lucan, where Chantel and I were running a Show and Shine with a substantial amount of money! It fell The Rider’s Mag - Page 9

short of what I needed to keep the Mag going but it was a grand gesture on their part and was a very humbling experience for me! An offer was made to by two of these incredible friends to buy and store the Trike, which I could buy back, when I got all my ducks in a row so that I could carry on with the Mag and I decided that I will take them up on their kind and very generous offer! That would have been the ideal situation for me! Sadly, that deal failed to go through and I am back to square one but with less time to make it all happen! The Trike is back up for sale! So, my scheduling is that I won’t be able to keep publishing a printed Mag until Fall but we will remain online regardless! Our online statistics are spectacular, as more and more of our readers discover what they can read on their computers, smart phones and tablets! We are also working on other changes that will provide a better revenue stream and keep us out of trouble in the future! I have been trying to get out to as much as I can but as always, there are more events than I can possibly get to myself, but I do try! I wanted to get out to the Tuesday night Bike nights in Paris to support them in their dispute with the heavy-handed Police Squads who are determined to dictate who can and cannot come out to their Charity event, but to this point hasn’t fit with other commitments that I have and an insane work schedule as I try to keep The Mag alive! I try to get out to Ride Night at Clare’s Harley-Davidson on Wednesday evenings but the same conflicting stuff has thus far prevented that from happening! I see Wheelz, hasn’t let his recent accident and subsequent lack of wheels stop him from attending many events out that way! The bus is always an alternative but not one that I relish or want for a friend to have to rely on! I wish him good luck in getting back on the road soon! Our girl Stitch (Swap Meet Sue) has been keeping this going with coverage of many events such as the Hogs for Hospice event out in Chatham on Aug. 3rd,4th, and 5th Long weekend! There is lots of other stuff coming up as well, Desiree’s Ride, in Brantford Aug 18th! For more details see the What’s Shak’n pages, their ad or desireesride.com.

West Coast Blues in Goderich is doing their Annual Show and Shine on Sept 1st – I really hope to be able to make it out to this one! Desiree’s Ride – Niagara Falls Sept. 8th. For more details see the What’s Shak’n pages, their ad or desireesride. com. Biketoberfest 2018 – Will go off once again at The Welland County Motorcycle Clubs great property in Welland on Sept 14th and 15th and will be bigger and better than any that have gone before! See you out there! Brothers of the Blade Poker Run 2018 I woke up to a fantastic looking day although I had been feeling far less than stellar for some reason for the past

BRO Dawg Daze of Summer Poker Run and Bash on Aug. 18th. Our Show and Shine is being moved this year to The Loretto Inn in the big Town of Loretto on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018! This could well be the best venue for us yet! The parking lot is huge and in great shape! The large building has undergone major renovations and can accommodate large crowds inside and out and the new owner has vastly improved the quality of the food! He is going to put up a large beer tent and is solidly behind the whole event! As usual we will have an excellent live band, lots of trophies for lots of categories, door prizes, vendors, draws and lots more! I hope you will all come out and join us for a great day!

The Rider’s Mag - Page 10

several days and it lingered on again this morning! This has always been a great ride! The Brothers of the Blade put a lot of time, effort and planning into this Poker Run! It is the largest fundraiser that they do with the proceeds going to their own registered charity, W.I.S.H. (Working in support of the Handicapped) that assists and supports different group homes and programs throughout the area! They help fill in the many gaps in the funding provided by the Government Agencies! Through their own Board of Directors, they work directly with the Homes to ensure whatever project they agree to fund, (A roof repair, an addition, equipment purchase or whatever.) they oversee the project from start to finish and ensure

that it is properly bid on, and that all is done properly and in a timely fashion! I rode the trike over to the Clubhouse to find a good-sized crowd had gathered and were busy socializing! I moved through their midst saying hello and getting some shots and even tried a cold can of 50 that was graciously offered to me and I had a hard time getting it down! I knew then that something was wrong and perhaps should have bailed at that point but I told myself I would feel better once we got underway and I got in the wind! This was to be an abbreviated run with only two stops planned! The first in Port Bolster at Mary’s Restaurant and the other at a great spot called The View (Whoopie Goldberg was nowhere to be seen! Thank all the Gods!) in Kirkfield then we would come back to the CH for great meal and socializing while being entertained by a great band called Bootlegged! It was a great ride without any incidents or problems and we got to see a lot of very scenic countryside along the way. My persistent feeling of general crappiness hung in for the entire ride but I was determined to get through it, resisting the urge to just drop out of the pack many times! I was still unable to choke down a whole beer and food couldn’t be tolerated at all although I did try my luck with a burger and fries at the stop in Kirkfield and what I managed to swallow, stuck like a huge lump in my gut! The ride back was torture but I did make it all the way, but once back there I couldn’t even think of food or drink and said a few quick goodbyes and headed home and went quickly off to bed! It was a great ride guys and Gals and I’m sure all had a great time and the fantastic food that always makes up the great spread that these fine folks lay out for their guests satisfied many an appetite but I just wasn’t up to the task! A cold 50 couldn’t even be thought of and food was far from Give Jason a Call: my mind, so I headed home and went directly to bed!

Port Dover 2018 I know a lot of people were looking for us at Port Dover but we just couldn’t make it! We had already committed to Baconfest and despite an elaborate plan wherein we could actually make it there albeit briefly, that fell apart like a cheap suit and had to be abandoned! So, we didn’t get it done! The Rider’s Mag - Page 11

Baconfest 2108 The Initial plan for the week was to be multi pronged, ball buster, many miles travelled, torture session that would have tested our mettle and worn us clean through to the bone by the time Sunday rolled around! It was to have started Monday with a trip out to Lucan for a meeting and encompass several other stops along the way! Then I had to go down to Sunnybrook Hospital Tuesday for some more of a series of tests that I was going through! Wednesday was to be a trip to Peterborough Thursday, would see us loading the truck and the trailer with all of our stuff to do the Show and Shine in Lucan on Saturday! We would head out really early on Friday morning trailering the Trike to The Checkered Flag where we would unload the Trike, ride the rest of the way into Port Dover for the Friday the 13th goings on arriving early get some shots and greet some folks and then head back reload the Trike on the trailer then head up to Lucan to ready ourselves for Baconfest! That was the initial plan! It all changed Thursday when we found that the trophies that were being custom made would not be ready until Friday and my trailer was on loan and still loaded with stuff! We decided to scrub plans for Port Dover entirely as we had enough going on with Baconfest so early Friday morning I drove out to Bridgenorth to my buddy Chris Carslake’s shop, Dragon Forge and picked up our trophies! This is an amazing place and Chris is a fantastic, very talented, extremely interesting, individual and I will have to come back and do a write up one day! Now back to Newmarket to load the truck and put together all the last-minute things we needed and early Saturday morning we headed to Lucan for the 5th Annual Baconfest Celebration! We rolled into town around 6:30 AM and the town was all abuzz with activity! The Town Workers and volunteers were everywhere setting up road barriers signage or whatever! Vendors were setting up their booths and police cars where taking up their positions to block off the street to all traffic other than motorcycles! This event is growing in leaps and bounds and has taken on a life of its own, and is a giant leap or two from what Mike and Teresa started 5 years ago! We made our way to what would be our spot for the day, down by the fairgrounds where we unloaded the truck and set up our booth! We briefly, ran into a rather worn out and haggard looking, Teresa who was either on her way somewhere, coming back from there or just trying to decide which way to jump next! She and Mike along with all of their crew from Hogtown put so much effort into this event and they are run ragged from well before the event until it is finished! I don’t think sleep is an abundant item on their list of things to do! The number of Volunteers doesn’t seem to have kept pace with the growth of the event either and the number of things to do seem to overwhelm the time they have to actually do them! I imagine that if you listened closely The Rider’s Mag - Page 12

at the closing of Baconfest you would hear one big collective sigh of relief rise above the town from each and every one of those volunteers! I know Laura was everywhere on her golf cart, clipboard in hand trying to keep things organized! It is a tall order! Our girl Stitch who does some of our merchandising, selling our Mag Swag and represents us at many events and shows that happen around the Province! This was one of the few where we are both at the same event at the same time! Maxx and the guys from the Predators MC, who have been so helpful at these Show and Shines, showed up and immediately pitched in to get ready for the days activities! There was some confusion last year, as to the perimeters of the indoor Show and Shine which was to be separate from the one we were to run outside and I thought that it had been all worked out but apparently the confusion still existed as bikes were being directed inside leaving us with a around 11 motorcycles that registered with us! We had also been told that there would be better signage this year and that riders would be directed to us! None of that happened due largely to the shortage of volunteers and the overwhelming workload they faced! We got the Show and Shine done, but it fell well short of spectacular! We also didn’t get to see much of anything of the event itself other than what we could see from our vantage point in the vendors Village! We were there to do the Show and Shine and had to concentrate on it rather that to take in the sights and sounds of Baconfest! We want to see The Harley Pulls! We want to hear and see the bands! We want to see what’s going on in Hogland! We want to drink some beer, eat some bacon, chase and catch some Pigs (If that is something that happens at Baconfest) and do whatever everyone else does at Baconfest! This will be the last time I do the Show and Shine at this venue! Don’t get me wrong! This is a fantastic event but I want to see it and experience it! I need to be walking or riding through it and reporting on just how fabulous it is not sitting in a booth! The only pictures I got were from the Show and Shine not Baconfest! I want to taste the bacon and feel the fest! We will be back but we will be out on the streets enjoying all things Bacon and Motorcycles with the rest of you! ABATE Final Frontier 2018 I picked up Chantel early and she looked radiant, clean, refreshed, vital and invigorated as she pranced gracefully like a gazelle from the doorway and with one effortless, graceful, ballerina like, leap, landed lightly behind me, instantly, positioning herself, regally on the back of the Trike and affixed her helmet as if it were a crown or diamond tiara atop her golden flowing tresses! I wish now that I had taken a picture of her then, as it would be the last time for at least a week that she would move, look or feel anywhere near this good! We headed out early, on a spectacular morning, the Trike running like a dream, travelling through some of the most scenic countryside that this Province has to offer, to the big Town of Priceville! This is where the ABATE people hold their much anticipated and well attended annual event, “The Final Frontier” on their magnificent property! This was far better than the crap we rode through to get here last year, when I had to practically pry her shivering, half frozen, body off of the Trike on her maiden outing to a motorcycle event and help her hold a hot cup of coffee in her hands, that were now, a real nice shade of blue, almost matching the flames painted on my Trike, a True Riders Mag blue, but I digress! She was shaking like she had a vibrator set on 11 inserted somewhere, or there was an earthquake happening in the exact spot where she stood! But the hot coffee seemed to bring her true colour back, the shaking and shivering subsided and she was soon feeling just fine! (* Editors note “The life of a Roving Reporter is never easy! No one promised you a fucking Rose Garden!”) Things ain’t always easy, which makes you appreciate it even more when the nice, easy stuff, happens! I have been coming here every year since they bought and opened up the property all those years ago! The first year, it had rained steadily for days before the event, turning most of it into a sea of mud! It was an adventure moving around and everything and everybody got to take some mud home as a souvenir, be it on their bikes, on their person or in their clothes! *I titled

my subsequent article (Which you can still find in the archives.) ABATE Final Frontier – There is joy in Mudville! It could have spelled disaster for any other group but the spirit in this crew was such that with something like, “You should have been here back in such and such a year!” and then you’ve got a whole night’s worth nothing short of a of stories ahead of you! A chance, good natured and good spirited altercation between some of the girls in a patch of mud caught people’s attention and soon gathered a crowd and that gave birth to one of their regular events in the games portion of every year’s event since! Sadly, some faces have changed over the years as that just goes with group dynamics and it is the nature of the beast, but the great spirit remains and happy feelings reign supreme! The property itself has seen some changes as they try to improve things such as the roads that lead back to the camping area have been the subject of much of their efforts and attention and yes, I did notice! We got a chance to ride through those much-improved roadways as we made a tour on the Trike getting some shots and stopping to talk to some old friends along the way! Chantel has only been here once before but must have made a good impression as folks remembered her and we had to stop for her to say hi to them as much as me! I think pretty and blonde may be better than old, ugly, fat and bald but I still have lots of folks to talk to! They do bring in 50 for me but now Chantel is even acquiring a taste for it! She may be after my job! It’s OK there is lots to go around, change is inevitable and sooner or later I’m going to drop! We had time for a tour of the Vendors area before the games began and as usual there was lots to see there with a great selection of goods ranging from great food, leather goods, clothing, jewelry, collectables and really great craft items! The games did begin and Chantel, being the fine young intern that she is, did a fantastic job getting right in the midst of the action, to capture some great pictures while I offered sage advice, encouragement as well as moral support from the sidelines and even made the occasional trek to the beer gardens for more 50 to ensure that she remained hydrated and in good spirits! What a Boss I am! The events wound down and it was now time for the much anticipated “Mud Wrestling”! This year they decided to veer away from the Vegetable oil Wresting that had taken place last year, it was slick to say the least! Chantel had even taken tornado (Come to think of it, they even had something part in that event and emerged from that contest not very well clothed and slippery as Hell! Even soaking in the pond similar to one of those, come through one year!) could dampen the mood here or spoil the party! They couldn’t remove all the slippery from her! Her hair dripped oil and it no longer flowed in the breeze when the Trike was partied on, as if this was what a party was supposed in motion! It just hung like a soggy oily towel, like the time to be! It sure gave you lots of stories to tell at future gatherings, where when some Newbie makes mention that you stole one of your wife’s favourite guest towels from the linen closet and used it to do the oil change on your truck of something to do with current weather conditions; and that damned old drain plug and filter didn’t seat really the next words spoken by those listening would start The Rider’s Mag - Page 14

good and just dripped oil everywhere and you tried your best to clean it up before your wife saw the mess you made in the driveway!! No that wasn’t me ‘Zilla honest! I don’t know what happened to your favourite guest towel! Just a story! Fiction ‘Zilla, Fiction! On the trip back, she constantly slid around on the back of the trike to the point where I thought of bungee cording her down so she wouldn’t slide off the bike and onto the roadway! I don’t think she could have gotten injured or even got a case of road rash if she had slid off, as she was so well lubricated she could have slid for at least, a mile effortlessly but the environmental people might have declared her to be a hazard! Water still doesn’t stand a chance of penetrating the surface of that seat to this day! Anyway, this year they made some changes, opting to take Tracy’s swimming pool to serve as the arena (I’d call it a squared circle but it was more oval!) and filled it with dense, thick, black mud (I did not dare ask what they used as a base material for this mud but I was checking local farmers manure piles for signs of theft as we rode out of town!) that would just cling like glue to whatever or whomever came in contact with it! That was all fine but then they called all the girls to a meeting where they explained “The Rules”! Rules? Now I’m no expert in the World of Mud Wrestling, but I’ve witnessed a few over the years and I was unaware of any rules! Mud wrestling, on the field party level, as far as I know, has no real rules other than the obvious ones like, no kicking, gouging of eyes, no stomping on heads and other body parts, no hair pulling, no brass knuckles, baseball bats, nan chucks, Billy clubs, guns or knives, because then it becomes a sport and then rules do indeed apply, as set down by the commission and judged by professional and highly payed teams of judges, officials and referees! At a field party, such as this, to my understanding, these are unofficial, unsanctioned contests and rather than having a serious outcome, It, has always been, just a fun event with only a purpose, and that purpose being, to watch a bevy of beautiful ladies (And the occasional misguided/drunken guy!) roll around in the mud in a free spirited, good natured contest where many or all of these ladies may, or may not, end up naked or semi naked depending entirely on the skill, agility, determination and spirit of the contestants and we all just have fun! This contest may well be defined by some, as a shameless, sexist exhibition that exploits females but here and now it is considered fun and nobody is forced to participate or watch! We didn’t gather out there to watch an actual real wrestling match with actual rules and professional wrestlers! My personal opinion is that there should be no rules in Mud Wrestling! Anyhow, wrestle they did and a winner was declared and awarded a cash prize and then came the job of washing all The Rider’s Mag - Page 15

that mud away! Not an easy task, as that stuff clung like it was manufactured by the same folks that brought us Duct tape, will-nots and Gorilla Glue! I rode Chantel home in far worse condition than I picked her up that morning! Her hip was hurting along with a few other body parts from a couple of take downs! The real curse, is that I would be hearing of all the aches and pains for days to come! Not real whining, because she doesn’t really whine at all, but she gets real close! Ah Hell she is an intern, she does a good job here and I don’t pay her! I guess I can listen to her gripe here and there! Is that mud in your ear Darl’n? It’s been three weeks! That stuff really was like glue!

Brotherhood Bash - 2018 - 4o years and counting I picked up Chantel early, the day was as great as it was the previous day with the sun shining brightly in a clear blue sky and warming thing things up nicely! The front door to her house opened slowly and this haggard looking soul, slowly emerged from it, hair all dishevelled, grimacing and muttering undistinguishably, ass dragging and walking with an exaggerated limp! “I need help getting on this thing!” she hissed, through clenched teeth (Saving me the trouble of asking if she’d remembered to put her front tooth in! I climbed off and assisted her on to the trike accompanied by chorus of moans, groans, a string of curse words and a whole lot of inaudible muttering although, I seemed to be able to distinguish “I’m never going to fucking Mud Wrestle ever again Old Man! Or words to that effect.” I turned up the stereo real loud and didn’t hear her mutter another sound and other than the occasional flurry of hard punches to my ribs and kidney areas (I’m guessing each time she felt a twinge; her fists came forward in an involuntary action!) I forgot she was even back there! A couple of hours on the back of a Trike on a beautiful summer day seemed to have mellowed her, (She seemed to be smoking a lot more than usual too and the smoke that occasionally wafted forward smelled sort of odd!) because she was smiling when she got off the bike in beautiful downtown Markdale, with the promise of a great hearty breakfast she seemed almost back to normal! By the time we rode through the gate at the Brotherhoods fantastic property and she got a Rye and Ginger down her throat she was back to true form and I knew that she would get the job of taking pictures done, as usual! I could then concentrate on visiting with old friends and enjoying cold beverages while she did the rest of the photographic duties! She did not disappoint! I did jump in with my camera to get some shots when I noticed her indisposed like when the kind gentleman came out from his tent with a roll of electrical tape to repair her boot that the sole got torn off! It was an amazing day! Wow! 40 Years! Amazing! I love these guys and I absolutely love their parties and I have attended many over the years and think that I have only missed one or two! I have trouble even remembering how old I am and what I did yesterday, so for me to pinpoint what I did and how long ago it was that I did it, would take more time and more serious thinking than I really want to devote to it, so let’s be content with saying I’ve been to more than two! In fact, when some of us old coots sit around reminiscing and a story comes up, more than one of us is bound to say something like, “It can’t have been that long ago! Shit! it was only yesterday, like 1977 or 1985!” not realizing how many years ago that was or how many miles we have put behind us, how many adventures and experiences we’ve had, how many friends we have buried and just what has transpired in our lives since then, because time plays tricks on us! We lose perspective and it all seems like just yesterday and we can visualize faces and places just the same and as clearly as when we last saw them! Just yesterday, when all those old friends who were with you to make those old memories, those old motorcycles that could be both your worst nightmare and your fondest memories and you wish that you could go through it all over again, see those same old faces, embrace them with huge friendly hugs and hearty handshakes! Sometimes, just a glance, a smile across a room or campfire and maybe a playful wink that said more than all the words that could be written! An unspoken acknowledgement that you are more than friends, you are Brothers and sisters! To me, that is Brotherhood! I’m privileged to say that I have experienced true Brotherhood and have those who I know for certain are my Brothers and that consider me to be a Brother! True Brotherhood is rare and true brothers are few and far between and cannot be defined by words or actions alone. Brotherhood is more than the patch you put on your back, the bike you ride or by oaths that mean more to some that others! Words can be rehearsed and empty, actions can be faked or done for selfish reasons, clothing is just clothing and can be changed on a whim! To some, a patch is just the way, to an end and can be discarded faster than it was achieved as for some, it doesn’t hold the same value as it does for others! Brotherhood, unlike friendship, stands the test of time and beyond as even in death they are still your brother until your own death finally distinguishes their memory! Sometimes, _ _ _ _ Forever, Forever _ _ _ _, doesn’t have to be spoken or sewn on your jacket or vest in the form of a patch! Sometimes, you just know! I feel totally comfortable amongst these people and will until the day I die and time removes all traces of me from the memories of those that I leave behind! Names of some of those, gone but not forgotten, were mentioned at this party, Baby Huey, Beachball and others and a soul who was dearly missed at this event, as it is the 1st one without her physical presence! She will be missed at all other events to follow! Tamara Maine was paid rightful tribute to as she was part of the whole feeling that has been so prominent at these parties for a lot of years! Salute! GBNF! RIP! There have been many changes over the years with some who once played major roles in this club moving on and so on! It happens with all clubs, organizations and workplaces etc.! Time and change go hand in hand and nothing ever stays the same forever except for some! For some, time seems to almost stand still! I say almost, because as hard as most of us try to stay true to who and what we are or were, this ain’t Never Neverland and you ain’t no Peter fucking Pan! Your hairline is receding and your waistline is expanding! You buy nothing but comfort waist jeans that expand another two inches before you have to go to the next size up! You blame your ‘ol Lady’s laundering skills as the reason your shirts fit too tight! You get an hour’s cardio vascular exercise just putting on your socks and pulling on your boots! You ain’t running anywhere unless a cop is chasing you and if it’s a young cop or you’d have to run really fast for any great distance you know you’d might as well not run at all! Then there are the exceptions to the rule! Those that seem to the defy the whole aging process as the rest of us know it! I come here to these events and everyone else is living life the way they are supposed to and showing the expected signs of the wear and tear that a life, well lived, as it is supposed to be done, except for a few who must have The Rider’s Mag - Page 20

made a pact with the Devil or something! I speak of those like Deacon, who must either have a picture of himself hidden up in the attic of his house or in a closet somewhere that looks liked death warmed over several times or he has access to Wonder-drugs that he has kept a secret from the rest of us all these years! He founded this club way back then, partied with the best of them and as far as I know didn’t follow some secret healthy living regimen when no one was around to witness it! He was out drag racing, looking the exact same as he’s always looked and winning trophies but didn’t take a little foray back into the trees just to add some drama to the day, this time, so perhaps that is the first crack in his armour and age is having some ill effects after all! Someone should check him over a see if he doesn’t have a sticker or plate attached to his body saying manufactured by ACME Robotics, Japan 1950 or something! Then HRH, Tracey (Mrs. Haircut!) who still, despite her advanced years (39 and holding, right Tracey?) is still competing with all the younger women and still winning and looking good while she’s doing it! You are incredible! Must be all that elixir of life that I heard you drank so much of the night before! Good thing you got friends that will carry you off to bed! I couldn’t possibly get off this topic with mentioning the old railway hand herself, who looks like she could beat John Henry in a railway spike driving contest! She still rides as good as anyone I know and still looks like a million dollars doing it! Sophie! It is a pleasure to know you and a privilege to call you friend! I was extremely happy to see and hear Mike “Casanova” doing his usual announcing and emcee duties at this year’s event despite his ongoing health issues! He lends a great flare to the whole event and did another great Job! Thanks! These guys really know how to put on a party and have been proving it for forty years! We were welcomed at the gate by several familiar faces and we had a chance to catch up on things right off the bat! Vinny came along and escorted us into the beer garden where we were instantly struck by the fantastic aroma coming from the Barbecue area! We were directed to the huge black card with the huge gold Lettering offering congratulations to the Club on 40 Years of existence and keeping it real! We signed it lovingly, with the Gold pens that were provided! Congratulations! The games here are gritty and a lot of fun and they attract participants from Clubs and individuals from all over the Province and the great thing is that they encourage young people to get out and experience the lifestyle and join in with the older guys and ladies and see the fun that can be had and the comradery no The Rider’s Mag - Page 21

matter what make of bike they are riding! These games are fun! Fun to watch and even more fun to participate in! This property is smaller and somewhat restrictive as to which games can and can’t be played here! The Drags are mainly just a hole shot as determined by the length of the course! Other, grittier, more, rough and tumble games like pick up sticks, the tire pull and others have sort of dwindled off as they required a little more grit than many (Did I mention that aging thing that applies to all but Deacon, Tracey and Sophie?) are willing or able to give these days! But with the number of younger people I’ve seen coming up through the ranks at this and similar events, it gives me hope for a revival and a real chance that our lifestyle and events like this may survive a bit longer! This was a great day spent with some truly amazing people! Thanks for your hospitality and just being who and what you are! See you next year! *On a side note! I did spot a Kenworth tractor parked in front of a camper unit across the way and something looked different about it but I couldn’t put my finger on what it was, until I ran into the owner Nick who solved the mystery! It was one of those miniaturized units where they take a full-sized pickup truck and make an exact replica of a full-sized tractor! Chantel got some pictures of it as it is for sale! Contact us for contact information!

I HAVE A PLATOON!!!! (I’ll paint you a picture. I’m jumping up and down like a fat kid getting free reign in a candy store!) A platoon!!! Ok, maybe not a legitimate army platoon, according to current army standards. Dammit, don’t take away this moment! I got a platoon!!!! Lemme explain. I’ve received some really great letters from a gentleman named Mick. The man is from England!! ENGLAND!!!! Isn’t that fantastic??

With his previous letter, I was given the honour to receive their ‘ladies’ patch from the Royal British Legion Riders Branch. It was affixed to my vest with love. I was beaming. I even shared it in one of my articles. Recently, I received another note, and this one tugged at my heart strings people. It also made me giggle (cue the PLATOON comment). They follow my writing about my less-than-graceful antics and have assigned the T.L.R.R.D.P. The Little Red Rapid Deployment Platoon! I will admit, I have a picture in my mind of these poor boys loading up their bikes on a platoon, (as they’ve said they would) and just row, row, rowing to Canada to resolve my sometimes less than stellar riding situations. I’ve forgotten to turn off my lights so often, I’ve had a battery replaced. I’ve been boosted countless times. Don’t get me started on my riding attire and sorting those out properly, or attempting to navigate a hilly, grassy area with my bike. Steep, gravel roads, or dear lord, cue the panic. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a confident rider, but I know my limits and I’m slowly working on becoming an even more effective rider. Apparently, I have no fear when it comes to riding in my left tire track, with oncoming vehicles coming, and I have absolutely no reservations when the large trucks The Rider’s Mag - Page 28

are coming. Always aware, always be seen! Still, this platoon could be my saving grace! Come on over boys, we’ve got a place for ya!!!! Or are you possibly ready for me to be riding on your roads should we visit? There was a ride in the UK, The Allied Memorial Remembrance Ride. It’s One Ride, Three Nations; United in remembrance of our fallen heroes. I received the honour to be included in this ride, as Mick and the boys registered me as a rider. How can that not bring a tear to one’s eye? Mick did introduce me to a gentleman that deserves my upmost remembrance

and respect. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Forces for a Royal Canadian Air Force Unit! Sgt. Glen E. Lewis. He entered the service from Missouri, passed away on July 4, 1943 and is now commemorated in the Cambridge American Cemetery. I did try to do research on him, to know more about this hero, but found little except images of his burial cross. I’m still working on it. Perhaps within each monthly article, I should do a ‘Remembrance and Respect’ section for one of our fallen heroes. I

could include ‘Honour and Respect’ for our heroes that are still with us. Look what you may have started Mick!!! Makes you think, when you feel that life is difficult, sometimes unbearable, you need to think of our Veterans. Their sacrifice made the life that we enjoy today possible, and we need to cherish and take care of them, while their alive and especially after their death. I’ll forever love and respect these men and women, for what they’ve sacrificed. DOVER!!! Holy hell was it hot. And I’m referring to the weather. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all about the heat and humidity, after all, I’m a certified hobbit in the cold and winter months. But when it’s so hot that you’re running through the restaurant at the end of the day, to literally drip cold water down your shirt, and lick ice cubes (and we’re not talking in a SEXY way people!) then it’s hot!!! I did not disappoint. Animal was there! And I found some freaky little glasses that I really should’ve bought, but I didn’t wanna piss off the older folks as they were glasses flippin’ the bird! I could not have been more of a dork wearing them. Well, could’ve, but I was there with Mike, Kate, Rod, Wendy and Glenn and if I wanted to still have friends, I needed to focus! We of course, went into On the Fringe. They got some of the BEST shirts! Oh, and we met up with the Windsisters for their huge picture op and chat session. The Windsisters always meet up on the beach, and this year was a larger group than last year (look what you done Linda!!) I’ll be honest, we were so hot, we sat in a shady spot until photo Dan was ready. After all, I didn’t wanna look like a totally wet ‘n sweaty dog. After the WS photos, we decided to wander more. It was great to see Jen, Nathalie, and all the other ladies that I see on the Windsister Facebook pages throughout riding the season that live so far away. We had time to kill after the photos, as later in the day, we were to meet up with hundreds of other women riders to try to break the Guinness record of women riders all in one place. There was 400 + of us women riders all in the gathering parking lot, but alas, we were too little a

The Rider’s Mag - Page 29

number to make the record. It was still shocking to see that many of us there. All of us..riders! We’ve come a long way ladies! We opted to stay in Burlington for Dover, which afforded us a beautiful ride in and out of Dover. Checking in Thursday night, we met up with Windsister founder Linda and Sista Patricia. Linda’s other half Frank was on his way. The girls and Frank were meeting other WS ladies at Emma’s Backporch for dinner and drinks, a cool little restaurant, but I’ll be honest, I was feeling old. Last I went, it was a pretty young crowd at this place, and I know my age and my capabilities lol Linda, Sista Patricia and Frank left way before us on Friday morning, (7 am) and by the time we got back Friday evening, I was sleepy. (Wow, maybe I need to re-evaluate my age). Rod spoke to Frank, and they also experienced a little sun stroke, being stuck on the highway coming back. I don’t think I’d have handled that well. I’m gonna be honest, with the summer came tree stuff. Falling tree stuff. We handled the branch, removed, set out by the fire pit, no problem. Yet there was another tree, over our driveway, that would drop branches the size of a hippos ass on my truck hood. Honestly, with that, and the bird droppings, my poor truck should’ve dropped its engine out on me ages ago in protest! Well, Mike made arrangements to have it removed (don’t worry tree huggers, we got lots of other trees!). Mike bought a new tractor (well, not new, new, but I love this baby from the 70’s). It’s helped with the cut pieces, as well as it cuts the lawn!!! Loader and tractor in one!!! So the tree was cut, and left in a huge mess of massive stumps all over the yard, for us to cut. I’ll be honest, it cut into our riding time. A neighbour was gracious enough to lend us a log splitter, and I’ll just say now, I am the reason for warning labels people. I burned the back of my leg on the splitter, right near the bottom area of my ass and I was not happy about it. I finished what I was cutting, went in for the aloe Vera, slathered up it up and back out I went to finish what I started (hey, hockey players play wounded all the time, I can take it!) I forgot to mention that while putting my hair up (I got a lot of long, red hair) I poked myself in the eye. Now those who’ve met me, know that I USED to be a disgusting nail biter, but as of late, I’ve kicked the habit and have beautiful long nails now, long enough to scratch my god damn eyeball while putting my hair up! Honestly!!! How is it I can write what I do, I can sit and do the books for a business (and do it well in my opinion), take night school college courses and yet, common sense and gracefulness eludes me. Now, here’s to our summer fun! On Aug 2nd in Lakefield, Classy Chassis & Cycle is holding their ‘Thank Goodness it’s Thursday’ Night Ride. Kickstands up at 5, dinner after. If you’ve never been, it’s definitely worth the ride. There’s beautiful roads out that way, and some stellar little places to shop and eat. Aug 3rd, The Brotherhood is holding their 40th annual Rodeo! Biker Games, music, food and of course, catching up with your buddies is what it’s about. Local Brotherhood folks can help ya with the details. Aug. 18th is the 5th Annual Desiree’s Ride. I’ve mentioned this ride in past articles, and I encourage you to not miss The Rider’s Mag - Page 30

it. It’s a ride in remembrance for Desiree Gallagher and raises money for Victims of Crime and is being held at The Knights in Brantford. Aug. 26th, there’s two events on the go. The Riders Mag Annual Show ‘N Shine is being held at a new location this year (take note), venturing out to Loretto! As always, vendors are on site, and the Man himself, Critter, will be there! Also, some of us writers are in attendance. I love going to this when I can! Aug. 26th is also the Quinte Ride for Paws Ride. This is an annual event, with vendors, food, music and door prizes. This is a really great ride, as it’s about an hour long and winds through Prince Edward County, visiting some of the smaller towns. This event is in support of local non-profit animal organizations that desperately need our help. There’s lots of rides coming up, and I’ll try to help keep you informed by posting them on my FB page at L’il Red “The Riders Mag” Central and Eastern Ontario. You can catch me by email at lilred@theridersmag.com. Got an event coming, hook me up with the details. It’s that easy. Cheers!

“I” Why is Peter Pan always flying? Because he never lands. I love this joke because it never gets old. What do you call a walking nun? A roamin’ Catholic. Why did Snoop Dogg need an umbrella? Fo’ Drizzle. Two chickpeas are walking down the street when one chickpea starts to vomit. The other chickpea asks, “Are you okay?” and the chickpea answers, “No, I falafel.” The frustrated cannibal threw up his arms. Why didn’t the Mexican archer fire his bow? He didn’t habanero. Why don’t ants get sick? Because they have little anty-bodies. How many Mexicans does it take to screw in a light bulb? Just Juan Last week I checked into my hotel in Tampa and was a bit lonely. I thought, I’ll call one of those girls you see advertised in phone books like escorts and such. I picked up the phone book and found an ad for a girl calling herself Erogonique, a lovely girl, bending over in the photo. She had all the right curves in all the right places, beautiful long wavy hair, long graceful legs..... well, you get the picture! I figured, what the heck, give her a call. “Hello,” the woman says . God, she sounded sexy. Afraid I would lose my nerve if I hesitated I rushed right in. “Hi, I hear you give a great massage and I’d like you to come

to my room and give me one. No, wait, I should be straight with you. I’m in town all alone and what I really want is sex. I want it hard, I want it hot, and I want it now. Bring implements, toys, rubber, leather, whips, everything you’ve got in your bag of tricks. We’ll go hot and heavy all night; tie me up, cover me in chocolate syrup and whipped cream, anything and everything! Now, how does that sound?” “That sounds fantastic,” she says, “but you need to press 9 for an outside line.” The inmate on death row was scheduled to be put to death by firing squad the follow morning. Throughout the day, the prison guards were being very nice to him. But when they asked him if he wanted something specific for his last meal, he said he didn’t want anything special. When they asked if there was something special he wanted to do, he said nothing. It went on like this all day. Finally, when he was put before the firing squad, the guard asked if he wanted a cigarette and a blindfold. “No,” the inmate said, “just get it over with.” “Well, is there anything that I can do for you before you go?” said the guard. “You didn’t even want a special last meal!” The inmate thought. “Actually,” he said, “Music is my life. One thing I would really like would be to sing my favorite song, one whole time through, with no interruptions.” The guard nodded and told him to go ahead. The inmate started, “One billion bottles of beer on the wall...” Billy Bob and Luther were talking one afternoon when Billy Bob tells Luther, “Ya know, I reckon I’m ‘bout ready for a vacation. Only this year I’m gonna do it a little different. The last few years, I took your advice about where to go. THREE YEARS AGO, YOU SAID TO GO TO HAWAII. I WENT TO HAWAII AND EARLENE GOT PREGNANT. THEN TWO YEARS AGO, YOU TOLD ME TO GO TO THE BAHAMAS, AND EARLENE GOT PREGNANT AGAIN. LAST YEAR, YOU SUGGESTED TAHITI AND DARNED IF SHE DIDN’T GET PREGNANT AGAIN!” Luther asks Billy Bob, “So, what you gonna do this year that’s different?” Billy Bob says, “THIS YEAR SHE’S GOIN’ WITH ME!!” In a dark and gloomy room, the fortune teller was startled by what she saw in her crystal ball. She looked up at her customer, sitting across the table. “There’s no easy way to say this, so I’ll just be blunt. Prepare yourself to be a widow. Your husband will die a violent and horrible death this year.” Visibly shaken, the woman stared at the psychic’s lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself. She simply had to know. She met the fortune teller’s gaze, steadied her voice, and asked, “Will I get away with it?” Rush Limbaugh and his chauffeur were out driving in the country and accidentally hit and killed a pig that had wandered out on a country road. Limbaugh told the chauffeur to drive up to the farm and apologize to the farmer. They drove up to the farm, the chauffeur got out and knocked on the front door and was let in. He was in there for what seemed hours. When he came out, Limbaugh was confused about why his employee had been there so long. “Well, first the farmer shook my hand, then he offered me a beer, then his wife brought me some cookies, and his daughter showered me with kisses,” explained the driver. “What did you tell the farmer?” Limbaugh asked. The chauffeur replied, “I told him that I was Rush Limbaugh’s driver and I’d just killed the pig. A guy sees his buddy in a bar and says, “You’re not going to believe this, but I’ve got a wild nymphomaniac in my car out in the parking lot. She’s wearing me out! Can you go out to the car and keep her busy? The dome light is off, so she won’t know you’re not me!” His friend agrees and goes out to his car. They climb into the back seat and start going at it. A few minutes later, a cop sees them and starts banging on the window, shining his flashlight inside. “What the hell do you two think you’re doing?” The Rider’s Mag - Page 33

I trust the season is finding everyone getting on the miles, cruising the hi ways, finding your destinations and attending the rally’s as much as your precious time will allow. One favorite of mine is Motorcycle Madness in Drumheller. Although the morning weather made this one tough, a good time was still had by those who attended as the day turned out with awesome weather. All around town and the community preparations for the arriving motorcycles could be seen. With so many gracious contributors and donations, it is just hard to mention everyone involved. Last Chance Saloon, Dekeyser Auctions, Family Jammin MC, Hoodoo Voodoo Cycle & Motorsports Ltd, Marks Work Wearhouse, Yavis Family Restaurant, The long Branch Saloon, Carbon Valley Hotel, Top Rocker, Western GM, Canalta Hotels, the Dinosaur Hotel, and Countryside Greenhouses to name of

few this events sponsors. Thank you again everyone for your time and donations. It is giving organizations such as these that help keep the riding community together. Another great local ride that I was not able to attend but had a great time and generated some sizable donations to local charities was the Empress River Valley Motorcycle Toy & poker run. Although I could not attend, I was able to post them to our Riders Mag – Alberta Facebook page. Please sign in, check out the pics and give them a like. You will see by the pics that a good time was had by all. The next big event brewing in the Drumheller area is The Rosedale Rally and Expo August 11 and 12th. Come on down and check out the bikes and vendors. The Rider’s Mag - Page 34

Another one of the big one for southern Alberta Events coming up is the Magic of Christmas your Run. This Cause has touched many and with everyone’s help, will continue to be a hit in this province for some time to come. More on this from committee member Noel Allen. Dan T.

CHRISTMAS gifts are usually carted by sleigh, but on Sunday September 16, 2018, some of Santa’s special helpers will ride something with a little more horsepower. On that day, Calgary and the surrounding area will see and hear more than 800 people riding over 600 motorcycles in support of the Magic of Christmas Motorcycle Toy Run. The Magic of Christmas Motorcycle Toy Run started as a concept in early 2014 during a time where normal funding channels were slowly being reduced due to Mother Nature’s wrath, various disasters, and a slowing economy. In response, charities needed to get creative so along came some motorcycle enthusiasts with the idea of holding a motorcycle toy run. The light Bulb went on and The Magic of Christmas Motorcycle Toy Run was born! With just a few growing pains, the Magic of Christmas Motorcycle Toy Run has progressed to become a yearly event to be proud of providing much needed toys and donations for The Magic of Christmas Charity. In 2017, the Magic of Christmas visited over 4500 people in long-term care and hospice and brought the true “Magic of Christmas” to over 600 families in the Calgary and surrounding area. This year the Magic of Christmas Motorcycle Toy Run is turning 5 Years Old! We hope you will join us for the fifth Annual celebration at 9:00 AM on September 16, 2018. The event will begin at Century Downs Casino (260 Century Downs Drive just south of Balzac) for this year’s festivities. Two wheels, four wheels, no wheels, it does not matter! For a minimum $10 donation or an unwrapped new gift of equal or greater value, you get live entertainment, breakfast, and a show ‘n’ shine at Century Downs. Then at noon, kickstands are up for a straight shot around the city in an unobstructed, leisurely ride to the Crescent Point Regional Fieldhouse in Aldersyde (125 Field House Drive East, Aldersyde, AB). In Aldersyde we will partake in a silent auction, live auction, live stage band (Throttle Up) and then cap it all off with a big turkey dinner! Not that rolled up generic turkey dinner, but the kind grandma used to make! You cannot get much for $10 these days! For more information, please visit http://themagicofchristmasmotorcycletoyrun.com or like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/calgarymotorcycletoyrun/ for up to date information and announcements! If the Interweb is not your thing, please feel free to give us a call at (403) 471-9851! All proceeds will benefit The Magic of Christmas charity. A non-profit, volunteer run charitable society with no government funding and less than 1% overhead. Charity number 139636369. The Rider’s Mag - Page 36

Text from Lefty (of my former MC), to me “How’s it goin bro?” Reply “good up north enjoying weather” response “Did you hear about Tamara?” Reply, “no what about her?” Well we all know now, tragedy struck once again this time to shining star of a lady, a friend to many, an experienced rider of Harleys and Horses. I first met Miss T. on a ride for Bernie G. several years back, she was on big rice cruiser I was a bike back behind her. On rides with all kinds folks you take your chances and sometimes end up near those that are shitty riders or just new. Well a mile or so into this parade I noted she held her spot like a champ; I told her so at the end of the event and began a friendship. If you knew Tamara, first she would walk up and put a squeeze on you and this was no weak woman! She never forgot a name or to greet everybody in the room. We all will miss Tamara and her demeanor of a take no guff from anyone woman. I told her once her next tattoo should read “I don’t take shit, I don’t give a shit, cuz I ain’t in the shit business! Anyhow this accident soon took on a life of it’s own on social media ...wonderful things said by many (specially Donna Graves) A go fund me was set up, numerous other events for donations have been run, the community came out big time, which is wonderful but she leaves us too soon. Tamara I heard said from some MC guys that she would have made a better member than some their own patch wearers. She was welcome at all clubhouses across GTA I know she actually helped in the construction of a few and chipped in to lend a hand on the events. She loved her Road King and put 20k a year on it, many more miles than most of us can say....so again GBNF>>>gone but never forgotten. Her spirit rides with us. Other things, A shout out to Shrubby’s Diner, they distribute the mag, are very biker friendly and husband and wife both ride. As soon as you hit the end of hwy 115/35 and head out east on Hwy 7 a mile or two on the left you see it. The very best breakfast for a very reasonable price, home style/quick service etc (or you can pay more and go to Tim’s for a factory made egg on skinny little English muffin with a mystery meat product or make the right choice and hit Shrubby’s) On my way up to the shack I always stop as I like old school diners with friendly people, take my advice and don’t miss it! Watch for their ad in Riders Mag coming soon. What else? Well I fall on my sword for not making Bikefest in Bobcaygeon, I did roll out in heavy rain, made it to Port Perry circled back to Pickering. A few hours later I learned it didn’t get wet up there. Krazzy congrats to you for making this happen, I know it will be the next Dover and without all the coppers

Another visit to the good guys at AM Sales, I have a 2011 Road Glide and the miles are mounting so may be time to consider something newer with low km’s. I was looking for Felix (owner) but he was away that and hooked up with Greg Dreer in sales, I liked this guy, straight shooter and was wrench for years at Harley Dealership so he really knows what he is talking about. I find their prices right and a good on trades, check them out a big selection of Harleys and other makes. By the time you read this PD13 will have come and gone, and when it’s a summer Friday it’s fugging nuts down there, but i will be doing a gig in Meaford so would miss it. Besides my first was in 1999 so i have been there done that and bought the sweat pants. But i do miss seeing all hooligans of my past. Anyhow running down at the crack of dawn to get in and having leave early just when the beer is tasting great blows. Other than that safe miles, keep your head on a swivel we do not need to lose another friend or foe on 2 wheels.

The guy says, “Oh, there’s nothing wrong, she’s my wife.” The cop says, “Oh, sorry,I didn’t know.” The guy says “Neither did I until you shined that light in here.” A blonde stormed up to the front desk of a library and said, “I have a complaint!” “Yes, ma’am?” “I borrowed a book last week and it was horrible!” “What was wrong with it?” “It had way too many characters and there was no plot whatsoever!” The librarian nodded and said, “Ah. So you must be the person who took our phone book.” Are those space pants? Because your ass is out of this world! No, they’re prison pants. And it’s time for me to make my escape. Are you Jamaican? Because Jamaican me crazy! No, I’m Finnish. Finnish with this conversation! Feel my shirt. That’s boyfriend material. It looks a little too clingy and hard to maintain. I hope you know CPR, because you take my breath away. I don’t. But I know karate and I could rip your lungs out. There’s something wrong with my eyes. I can’t take them off you. I’m having a problem with mine, too. I can’t see you getting anywhere with me. What’s a nice girl like you doing in a place like this? I was gonna ask you the same thing! Do you believe in love at first sight? Or should I walk by again? Go ahead. I need to practice hitting a moving target. Why don’t we get drunk and make some bad decisions? You look like you already are, and you just did.

Milwaukee-Eight Oil Pump Issues II of IV The Milwaukee Eight is not allowed to have venting oil also known as blowby or oil carryover out the air cleaner. The EPA may currently turn a blind eye to this Harley phenomena but CARB will still be strict and the relatively new Euro 4 standards will be all over it. Euro 4 is responsible for forcing H-D into development of the compliant Milwaukee Eight platforms. It was also no coincidence that Euro 2 regulations in 1999 spurred the Twin Cam engine design, reinforced by Euro 3 in 2006. American pollution regulations along with the Euro predecessor TUV have spurred huge and many design changes for our beloved Harley-Davidson’s since 1977 with internal gear noise reduction technologies. Does the reader think it an accident that the rear belt drive replaced the oily, noisy chain, circa 1980? The newer regulations have presented big problems for an antiquated design that cannot be changed too much because bikers have a love affair for the traditional H-D engine configuration. Euro 5 dictates will begin to introduce in two more years with further restrictions. These ever-increasing constraints will force H-D to sooner rather than later abandon air cooling, 450 cylinder configuration, pushrods, and remote camshaft(s) for liquid cooling water jackets, overhead camshafts, and a 560 or 600 cylinder angles.. The new engines do not appear to suffer blowby out the air filter breather. So, to the problems at hand, did the Milwaukee-8 attempt to control blowby by restricting the engine oil separating breather apparatus thus creating the situation of sumping and engine braking? Pistons descending and ascending in tandem violently forces air around the engine, absorbing oil molecules and minuscule droplets creating an oilified mixture. Too much oil is remaining in the engine instead of being scavenged away by the return side of the oil pump. Oil pumps cannot effectively remove oil in combination with air; this, despite the most powerful series of oil pumps in H-D history are utilized in the Milwaukee-8 touring and Softail/Dyna platforms. This is where the problem gets interesting with perhaps misdirected attempts to effect a cure. Increases in swept volume travel increases blowby in 80, 88, 96, 103, and 110 cubic inch Evo and Twin Cam engines. Increases in engine size accomplish through bigger cylinder bore and/or increasing the length of piston travel (stroke). Power equates with air inside an engine. More power through increased cubic inches comes from increased air capacity. Gas cannot burn without air. The air capacity measures as swept volume. The area a piston travels one way is the swept volume of an engine. The two big causes for oil blowby out of Twin Cam and predecessor engines is an increase in swept volume and/ or sustained engine higher rpm riding. Now, let’s see what H-D says about the Milwaukee-8 sumping/engine braking situation; “2017 and 2018...Milwaukee-Eight engine and a Stage III or Stage IV kit can experience a condition known as sumping during extended periods

in low gear, at high rpm or under heavy engine load.” The explanations for two different problems are essentially the same since high engine load equates to higher rpm in a gear. So, maybe a venting issue is the cause of both conditions; blowby on Twin Cam and predecessor engines out the air breather and internal M-8 sumping/engine braking, albeit from opposite ends ... too much or too little! The M-8 107 and 114 engines have increased swept volume over Evolutions and Twin Cam engines. Add sustained higher (heavy engine load) rpm riding and we have two different results from the same causes. The Motor Company is between a rock and a hard place as the pollution cops in Europe would deport Harley-Davidson if they continued leaking oil out the air breather. So, blowby is exacerbated by sustained, high rpm in any gear while riding and bigger engines. The Milwaukee-8’s are the biggest Big Twins in Harley history. Yet, the symptoms for engine braking and sumping are the same. Could the causes be the same for the different conditions? Yes, if the breather apparatus in each Milwaukee-8 head has been made too restrictive to increase oil retention inside the engine to prevent blowby. Let me add some more fuel to my thoughts. Another Service Bulletin (TA0022) states that on 2014 to 2018 Twin Cam and M-8 Touring models, a transmission-primary oil transfer problem may occur. Simply, transmission oil may be entering the separate primary chaincase, thus depleting some transmission fluid and adding to the primary fluid levels. H-D notes that in some bikes 150 ml (5 fluid oz) have transferred in less than 8000 km (5000 miles). Traditionally, oil transfer has occurred because of a worn or defective seal separating the two. Indeed, H-D instructs to replace the oil seal and mating spacer that it fits on for Twin Cam models. However, for 2017 and 2018 Milwaukee-Eights with the same oil transfer issue, H-D instructs to check both “primary and transmission oil levels and adjust the volumes as needed. Verify oil levels again in 1600 km (1000 miles).” This is not a cure! The oil is not leaking because of a defective or worn seal but is venting through the opening of least resistance, which in this case is a transmission seal. I think engineers have squeezed the venting process too tightly in a bid to stop oil (blowby) dripping into the outside world. Furthermore, if air in the engine excessively mixes with oil forming an oilified mist as it does in the Milwaukee8’s, then the oil pump will cavitate. The air will compress reducing oil pump pressure and pumping ability that the pump depends on to move oil. This results in too much oil lying around in the engine and a greater source for oilladen air. This is a cause for sumping with resultant engine braking. H-D also warns of potential engine damage. How could this happen with too much oil? Again, air is not a lubricant. Air in the oil will not lubricate component engine parts properly. Wait a minute! The oil pumped through on the feed is not burdened with an air mixture; it is pure oil. Yes, but many bottom end compartment components are not lubricated by pumped oil but by “splash” and “drip” lubrication flung about by the rotating flywheels picking up oil from the bottom end cavity. These parts include pinion The Rider’s Mag - Page 49

side and sprocket side flywheel support bearings and cylinder sleeves. Next issue, will be Part III of IV in our discussion on sumping and engine braking. H-D and others report that piston oilers loosen and drain into the bottom of the engine. Is this the cause of problems? Feuling has much needed advice that all should heed on an aggravating factor of too much oil in the bottom end. Furthermore, what does the automotive sector do? What can we to learn? Finally, how about another oil separator down below with a loosening of those above to allow superior breathing ability without suffering blowby? Donny Petersen www.donnypetersen.com

And you look exactly like the guy I turned down two seconds from now. Do your legs hurt from running through my dreams? No, they hurt from dodging corny lines like that all night. Are you from Tennessee? Because you’re the only ten I see! No, are you from Istanbul? Because you sound like a real turkey. I just Googled “sexy” and a picture of you came up.You’ll get the same result if you search for “not interested.” If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?........

The Rider’s Mag - Page 50

Hello fellow Riders! Before starting this article, I re-read my previous one which appeared in the July issue of The Rider’s Mag because I had absolutely no recollection of what I had written. For the majority of May and June I felt like I was a Zombie - there but not there. Functioning but not living. It was very difficult for me to have to say goodbye to Mom however thanks to the support of family and friends such as yourselves, I was able to get move forward. Believe me, it was not easy and included some very dark and depressing days. Days where even looking at my motorcycles did nothing for me. Now I cannot believe that it is mid August! Where did the summer go? Despite the heat which continues to blanket us, I have seen signs of what is to come. The first is that damn tree which I pass every morning as I head out to work. This tree sits a short distance from my house and its leaves changed just under a week ago. I hate what it represents...... I can’t imagine not riding! As I reflect back on the past several months, I can’t believe all of the things that my hubby Lloyd and I have done - all the places that we have been and the amazing fun that we have had - all because of a motorcycle! I left you with a cliffhanger at the end of my last article as Hankster 2.0 was not in the best of shape and was waiting to be transported by the CAA to Motorcycle Enhancements. My hero and saviour, John Consentini came to my rescue by ensuring that my tire which was installed incorrectly by Honda resulting in a flat (they had pinched the inner tube at time of installation) was repaired in addition to adjusting my centrifugal force clutch. As a result, Lloyd and I were able to depart on our vacation as planned. On Friday, June 23, we rolled from Mississauga to Amherst, New York where we spent the night. We hit a bit of rain in Burlington but that was the only rain that we saw for our whole trip which lasted 2 weeks. We crossed at the Peace Bridge and as this was my first time crossing the border on my motorcycle, I was a bit anxious as a result of what others had told me I could expect. “You will have to stop and turn off your bike” “You will have to put your kickstand down” “Take off your helmet” “Have your documents ready” “Know your license plate number - they will ask you for it” I had crossed into the U.S. many times in my life however never on a motorcycle. I was mostly nervous about where I would stop since at most crossings, the section of pavement immediately in front of the Customs Booth is angled so that the driver of the car is level with the Customs Officer. My biggest fear was that I would stop in the wrong spot and as a result, drop the bike. Then what? In hindsight, it was silly of me to be so worried about these things, and now that I’ve been through it, I can laugh at myself however as we rolled up to the Peace Bridge, my stomach was in knots. The first thing that made me feel better was the fact that the road infront of the Customs Booth was level. Yahooo! I rolled up with full confidence when I was told to. I remembered to turn off the bike, put the kickstand down, and take off my helmet before the Customs Officer could say hello. I had my documents ready and although I did not remember my license plate, I was permitted to get off the bike in order to provide the information. I answered the questions Customs “Where are you going?” Ang “Ocean City, Maryland” Customs “What is in Ocean City Maryland?” Ang “My vacation” Customs “Anything to declare or that you will be leaving in the United States?” Ang “No” Customs “You can’t wait here but if you go by the black fence you can stop and wait there” And they’re off... those nerves came from I don’t know where and my stomach dropped. Fence? What fence? Where? I can’t see anything!!! So, dippy doodle Ang asked the Customs Officer where the fence was and if I could get off the bike so that he could point it out to me. Not looking very impressed, he allowed me to do so as he pointed in the direction that I was to go. There was only the one way - did I feel like an idiot! He watched as I put the helmet back on, started the bike and then proceeded to lift it off of the stand. Oh oh... it’s not moving! What? 2nd attempt.... nope... not budging. What? Really? It’s level ground - why was I having a problem? What are you so nervous about? I felt like the Customs Officer was watching me with 10 sets of eyes, his face seeming to say “How do you ride that thing?” R-E-L-A-X!! I did, and off I went to wait by the black fence The Rider’s Mag - Page 51

for my husband Lloyd. He joined me shortly thereafter and we headed to the Olive Garden. Mmmmmmmm Olive Garden! Thankfully, despite it being 7pm on a Friday, there was no line and we were seated immediately, Shortly after removing our jackets and placing our helmets on the empty seats at our table, a young girl approached us, introduced herself as our Waitress and immediately began to tell us about her motorcycle. She described her bike as a 350 crotch rocket which she had crashed a short time ago as a result of her taking a turn too quickly. She added that she would be taking delivery of it very soon and that in addition to repairs, she had had it painted purple and black. Lloyd immediately showed her pictures of our bikes and told her that his was a Yamaha VStar 950 Tourer and that mine was a Honda Shadow Aero 750. She quickly said that while she never heard of these makes and models, they were cool looking bikes. Never heard of them? Some people’s kids! haha The next day, we left Amherst New York and rode for approximately 600km with a few stops along the way including breakfast at the Silverlake Restaurant in Warsaw New York, a beautiful small town located approximately 37 miles southeast of Buffalo. It was a fantastic stop with good food and great service. Dinner was at Mick’s All American Pub in Mount Joy, PA It was a beautiful day filled with awesome backroads with hills and turns and amazing scenery. Who knew throughout this beautiful day of riding - my longest ride to-date - what was to come. We had no idea that when we rolled into the Holiday Inn Express located in Strasburg, PA that we would be entering what felt like a scene from The Shining. We were both tired, albeit a “good” tired and just wanted to relax. The fun started when we began to remove our things from our bags. I noticed that my left bag was loose. Upon inspection, it turned out that one of the bolts had loosened to the point where it was no longer fastened to the bracket. As a result, there was only one of two bolts securing the bag. Lloyd attempted to screw the bolt back in but was unsuccessful. We now know that had he lifted the fender, he probably would have been able to screw the bolt back in. But at the time, this did not even enter our mind. We decided to check in and return to the bikes later. As soon as we entered the hotel lobby, we were greeted by an interesting looking young lady who looked like she was an older version of one of the twin sisters from The Shining. She smiled and said “Are you here to see Jesus?” There was so much that I wanted to say..... for those of you who know me, I do not think that you would believe that I said absolutely nothing. Part of me was at a loss for words - the other part was ready to make a smart ass comment. I thought better of it and said “No” We got our key and quickly headed to our room. It’s getting dark, it’s Saturday night in Amish Country. Everything is closed and not much will be open on Sunday. What to do! I chatted with my friend Gaetan via text about the loose bag and he suggested getting cable ties if we could not find a replacement bolt. While chatting, I recalled that I was a member of a Facebook Group called North America Biker Rescue (NABR). The site was started to assist bikers in distress or need all over North America and has since expanded into a Global network. The concept is simple - bikers willing to help bikers who need anything from directions to picking up their bikes after a crash. When you join, you are pinned onto a map so that if someone needs help in your area, you will be alerted. I figured that I might as well give it a try so I did. To be honest, I never thought that I would hear anything and quickly forgot about my post. Lloyd and I left our room and returned to my bike to have a better look. I left my phone in the room therefore could not be reached. When we returned to the room a few minutes later, I was amazed to see that a few people had responded to my request for help and that someone by the name of Diesel had even passed by to assist. Since he could not find a bike with a rider at the side of the road, he concluded that I had left the scene and continued on my journey so he returned home. This wonderful man actually left his home again when I posted that I was at the hotel. Unfortunately, he arrived without Allan keys, so he went back to his house and returned again with the required tools. He proceeded to remove the bag and after all of his hard work, he was of the opinion that the bolt was possibly stripped and that I would need a new one. The good news was that there was a store called Trailer Supply less than 5 minutes down the road which would be open on Sunday so we knew where we would start our day come morning. Sunday started with my sitting in the hot sun in the parking lot of the Trailer Supply store in Strasburg PA while Lloyd tried to re-attach the bag with a new bolt. Unfortunately this was not to be so he used cable ties as a temporary fix and we were on our way. Ocean City Maryland is a beautiful area with a boardwalk that stretches 3 miles beside a beautiful beach. There are the traditional beach stores, bars, restaurants and an amusement park which takes you back 30-40 years due to their nostalgic rides and carnival games. We met a couple of bikers who told us that there is an a annual bike rally called OC Bikefest which runs from Thursday, Sept 13 - Sunday, September 16 this year. Each day, they have live bands, vendors, custom bike show and more. This might be a plan for next year! The Rider’s Mag - Page 52

We hung out by the ocean for about a week to recharge our battery. While there, we rode to a small town called Berlin and checked out a few shops before returning to the ocean as a result of the heat. When it was time to leave we rode to Lewes Maryland to take the ferry into Cape May, New Jersey. The ride took approximately 90 minutes and was very enjoyable. There were only 3 bikes including ours and I learned a very valuable lesson as we approached the dock. Despite what others might do, don’t take your bike off the stand until AFTER the boat has docked or you might drop it….. well I didn’t but I sure came close! From Cape May, we went into Atlantic City, New Jersey where we spent a couple of nights at the brand new Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. It was a great day to spend a few days before starting our journey home. One evening while there, we saw Howie Mandel perform and he was absolutely hilarious. Some of my friends had told me about Route 97 and the Hawk’s Nest. This great stretch of road is approximately 113 kilometres long and runs from from Port Jervis, New York to Hancock New York with much of it following the Delaware River. The most spectacular part of this road is the area referred to as Hawk’s Nest just outside of Port Jervis, named after the birds of prey that live there. This part of the road traverses the magnificent hills of the Catskills on one side and overlooks the Delaware River on the other. While it is amazing to ride as a result of the tight turns and view, this stretch is less than a couple of kilometres. I planned our route to ensure that we travelled the entire stretch of route 97. If you have never done it, get out there. If you have, it’s time to do it again. It is well worth it! After a few days of riding, we crossed into Canada from the Thousand Island Bridge and ended up in Picton, Ontario to meet 6 good friends and fellow riders. It was Thursday, July 5 when we arrived at the Picton Harbour Inn, a great biker friendly hotel with rooms overlooking the harbour. Thursday evening found the 8 of us walking around town looking for a restaurant that had room for all of us. We eventually found space at Gus’s Family Restaurant and the food certainly hit the spot for all of us. On Friday, we rode to Smith’s Falls where we stayed at the Econo Lodge for a couple of nights. The hotel hosted many bikers while we were there as a result of the Rideau Rendezvous being held that weekend which was the reason for our journey. It proved to be a great weekend of bikes, vendors, live music and wonderful friends! We did not participate in the ride since a friend of ours, Bob, offered to take us on a scenic tour. Living in the area, Bob demonstrated that he knew some amazing roads with twists, turns, hills and scenic water views. This amazing weekend ended with 8 of us riding home, stopping at McDonalds so that Rene could have his hamburger breakfast. On Friday, the 13th, we rode with several friends to where else but Port Dover. Did you also make it there? It was HOT and crowded! We hung out for over 8 hours all to buy a tshirt and grab a Nathan’s hotdog. I find it amazing how we always seem to bump into people that we know, despite the large crowd. The next day was Baconfest and we were thinking about riding to London later that day to grab a room for the night when a friend of ours suggested that we call the Comfort Inn located in Simcoe since they had rooms available. Surprisingly, this proved to be the case so we made a reservation before leaving Port Dover. Saturday morning was overcast and looked a bit ominous. We were three The Rider’s Mag - Page 53

bikes and a car making our way to Leamington and halfway into our journey, I pulled over so that I could put my rain gear on. It was a good thing that my hubby did the same because shortly after we started rolling again, the skies opened up for approximately half an hour. Once the rain stopped, the clouds remained however this was much appreciated after having spent the previous day under a brutally hot sun. We had never been to Baconfest so everything was new to us. There were (of course) motorcycles, food vendors selling items with and without bacon, clothing vendors, and multiple stages with live bands. There was also camping available however we chose to head for

home after a couple of hours at the event. The following weekend was the Wasaga Beach Bike Rally. Another event that I had never been to but truly enjoyed. We arrived on Friday, July 20 (hard to believe that I had made hotel reservations in November, 2017! Time flies!) and the weather could not have been better. Our hotel was a short walk to Beach Area 1 and Main Street where bikes were parked, vendors displayed their goods and bands performed on a large stage set-up on the beach. The location at the beach was a perfect place for this type of event, and I loved the vibe. Everyone was relaxed and overly friendly. As if things were not exciting enough, STIHL partnered with the Wasaga Beach Bike Rally and held its Timbersports Series at the beach as well. At time of writing this article, I have learned that unfortunately this event will not be taking place in Wasaga Beach next year. I suspect that this might have something to do with the redevelopment of the area which is very unfortunate. Hopefully the Organizers find a suitable location which includes a beach as this is what made it to special. Civic weekend found us riding with friends to Leamington for Hogs For Hospice. We stayed at The Best Western which was a short ride away from where the festivities were being held. Lloyd and I participated in the actual ride which was amazing. All along the route, residents waved and yelled thank-you as we rolled by. I recall one man holding a sign which said “THANK-YOU. Riding with what I believe was well over 1,000 bikes is incredible enough on its own however having people wave as you pass showing their appreciation touches your heart. The Rider’s Mag - Page 54

If you enjoy riding in large groups and have not participated in this ride, I strongly encourage you to consider it for 2019. Besides the ride, there were vendors, food trucks, bike games, a beer garden and live music. On Friday, Cheap Trick was the headliner followed by Randy Houser on the Saturday. On Friday, August 10, Lloyd and I got on our bikes close to 4pm and rode up to Port Carling. While we did the majority of the ride on backroads, we picked up the 400 just past Moonstone as I was concerned that we would not find any restaurants open if we arrived later than 8pm. We stayed at the Crestwood Inn, a very biker friendly property less than 5 minutes from where the shops and restaurants are. Dinner was a simple Subway sandwich after which it was lights out as we were both exhausted. On Saturday, we found some amazing roads which took us to Bala, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, all around Lake Rousseau and back to Port Carling. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of one road that we were on since I just turned onto something if it looked interesting. Back in Port Carling, Lloyd noticed that my license plate was cracked near the top left corner by the bolt. Aggravated at the thought of the running around that I would have to do, I watched as Lloyd tried to “McGyver” a temporary fix to hold my left light in place as it had dropped due to the plate cracking. I suspect that the plate cracked from the vibration of the light dropping and that one thing had impacted the other. More cable ties!! After about an hour of Lloyd working under a very hot sun, we checked out some beautiful historic boats docked for the Antique Boat Show after which we grabbed a quick bite and returned to the hotel. It was not time to get into a taxi for our short ride to Bala to see 54-40 at the Kee To Bala. We had both never seen a show at the Kee however, having heard so much about it over the years, it was something that we always wanted to do. Since we both like 54-40, it seemed to be the perfect opportunity. What a great show at a great venue! The show was sold out and everyone in there had a fantastic time, myself and Lloyd included. On Sunday, we met up with four other riders and after breakfast in Bala, followed our leader, Keith to the Big Chute Marine Railway which is not to far from Coldwater. If you have not seen this amazing 100-ton open-carriage which portages boats over a ridge between the Severn River and Gloucester Pool on Georgian Bay, then I suggest that this is another destination for you to add to your list. Keith, Stacey, Cathy and Darryl joined us for a good part of our ride home with Keith taking us on some awesome roads which we had never travelled on before. They are all amazing riders and wonderful people and it was an absolute joy to share our journey with them. This past Monday, I rode Hankster 2.0 into Motorcycle Enhancements for an oil change, a clutch adjustment The Rider’s Mag - Page 55

in addition to some minor repairs so that I could remove my cable ties. Prior to leaving Hankster 2.0 behind for a few days, we removed the plate so that I could visit Service Ontario to get a new one. On Tuesday, after standing in line for over an hour, I approached a young lady, showed her my plate and explained that I needed a replacement. Smiling, she told me that I would have to bring both in. I hope that my face did not reflect the thoughts which were going through my mind. Despite what I really wanted to say, I gave my best smile and told her that this was a motorcycle plate. She directed me to a young woman beside her who helped me immediately, taking my $59 and giving me my new plate. Yesterday, I returned to Motorcycle Enhancements to pick up Hankster 2.0 John put the license plate on the bike and sent me on my way. It seems funny to me how my story starts and ends at my one and only bike shop however the ending is a good one. Hankster 2.0 now has a new licence plate in a nice black license plate holder, the cable ties are gone, my oil is changed and my clutch has been adjusted. I truly appreciate the excellent service that I get from John and his crew. As I think back to all of the riding that we have done so far this year, I have mixed emotions. Happy because of all the memories that I now have and then sad for the same reason. I recall looking forward to the summer thinking about all of the plans that we had and now, it’s all behind us. Time flies by in an instant and at times, things feel like they have ended before they even started. I am now a rider with much more confidence in my riding abilities having ridden with a variety of different people on many different roads. I still need to work on tight turns from a stop - this is my biggest challenge. Since my Mom passed, I have a strong need to be by the water. Lakes are fine however when I was a little girl, my parents and I often travelled to Florida. As a result, I became an ocean girl. This year, I have a need to return to the ocean as much as possible. It is for this reason that the last week of August we will depart for our last big ride of the year which will be to Wildwood, New Jersey. I have planned our route so that we can return to the Hawk’s Next however this time we will be travelling from Hancock New York southbound to Port Jervis. As such, we will be on the same side as the observation stops so I look forward to stopping this time to check out the views. Once we return after Labour Day, we are planning on joining our Southern Cruisers in Port Severn the following weekend. I now have a GoPro and started recording my rides a few weeks ago and am planning on uploading to my YouTube channel when time permits. I would like to end this by thanking each of you for reaching out to me with regard to my Mom - each of you made a very difficult time easier to live through. I especially want to thank Critter whose kindness, support and touching words helped brighten my darkest days. Critter certainly has a way with words and I will never forget how he helped me get my ass back in gear. Also, a very special thank-you to my husband Lloyd. He has had to deal with quite a lot these past 4 years. From breast cancer to treatment, to yearly tests (coming up again this September) to losing my Mom and absolute heartache. I don’t know what I would have done without each of you, without Critter, without Lloyd and without my motorcycle. Thank-you for reading and until next time, why discourage when you can encourage! ang 647-226-2921 angsan@sympatico.ca ang@angproblemsolved.ca WEBSITE: www.angproblemsolved.ca www.leftyandthegoons.com BLOG: http://angproblemsolved.ca/blog/ FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/angproblemsolved/ TWITTER: https://twitter.com/sandowangie YOUTUBE CHANNEL: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3CPlX8KgxAmFQNPv2Vz_0A/featured

Well here we are in the August issue of the Riders Mag and by the time this issue is out I will be back on a bike doing what I love RIDING, but in the meantime, here is what I have been up to.

Bike Night at Steeltown runs every Thursday and they are located at 8 Barton Street East in Hamilton Ontario.

Steeltown Garage Bike Night

Soules Classic barbers and Ink Bike Night (AKA Monday Night Invasion) This is the first year for Bike Night at Soules Classic Barbers and Ink so I headed down to check it out. Of course, I was still bike less, so the 40-window limo it was, again, and I arrived at the shop at 6:00 P.M. And bikes of every make, model, size and colour were rolling in for the nights festivities. Upon my arrival I was greeted by Kari and Tim Soules the owners of the barber shop and Tattoos shop. It was a beautiful evening, despite the threat of rain so the bikes were coming and going throughout the night. The barbeque was on and hot dogs were being served to the hungry attendees and Dave Reid was pumping out the tunes for everyone’s enjoyment. It was good to see many people that I knew come out and support, Paulie, Joe Chavez, Bruce, Ray and Steve (Bacchus

It was a beautiful summer night to head out to Steeltown Garage for their bike night so after running a few errands I headed for bike night. I had to take the 40-window limo (HSR bus) to get there but it is what it is. I arrived at 6:30 P.M. To a big line of bikes of seemingly, every make and model imaginable, that seemed to go on for a few blocks already and they kept coming and going as the night went on! I talked with a guy named Mike who was riding a Norton Commander that allegedly was very fast and loud! My kinda bike! It was good to run into many people that I knew like Peter Hirshmann, Ed Williams, Gino Gasparini and others. I also ran into Myles the organizer of Bike Night in Paris! It was good to see you all and I will make it out to Bike Night in Paris when I get my bike back to support the event. The Rider’s Mag - Page 64

MC), Lincoln County MC (have a good trip to LA guys), Mike Fleming, Shane and Tina, Rick Bullard (Rick rode in all the way from Windsor it was good to meet you bro), Sandro, Larry Bielak and others that I saw throughout the night. The charity for the month of July was Juravinski Cancer centre. The night went on and everyone headed in different directions. If you’re every in the Hamilton area and need a haircut, beard looked after, or a tattoo stop in and see Kari and Tim and tell them Wheelz sent ya! They are located at 1915 King Street East in Hamilton Ontario. Well that is what I have been up to this past month...hope you all are having an awesome summer and riding season.

Jessie Lee’s Open -Road Experience

Happy hot, humid, summer to everyone!!! Not sure exactly what the weather has been doing up north but south of the border it has been a sweaty mess, and not the fun kind! I’ve realized that my Indian makes a spectacular winter bike due to the amount of heat the engine pumps out between my legs but as for summer riding I’m not even sure the concept of “Don’t be rude ride nude” could help me out. Thankfully my better half has a very “cool” classic BMW he’s willing to swap with my Indian for a tank of fuel

fight for our rights as riders and sponsors several annual events in the 2 wheel race world. The AMA’s home base is in Ohio and each summer they hold Vintage Bike Days. This place is insane! I’m quite certain I saw every make and model of motorcycle ever put into production! There were bikes for show, bikes for sale, bikes racing, a parade of bikes doing hot laps, and a swap meet of machines from BMW to Yamaha and every letter in between! British bikes were quite popular especially the Triumphs and BSA’s. Of course a few looked like they had never had

their wheels turned and then some others looked as if maybe someone dropped them in an oil pit. As usual, the

or 2 out on the highway. Anyways… we just got back from a 48 hour 1200 mile adventure and I thought some of you may enjoy the scenery we saw. Occasionally after 100 or so miles in one position on flat neverending interstate I get the desire to recline or stand up or even just lay down depending on my mood. I’m guessing several of you have your ownlittle stunts you perform out on the open road, sorry moms and dads no hands and no helmets are usually involved. Down here we have the A.M.A. (American Motorcycle Association) they are a splendid organization that helps The Rider’s Mag - Page 66

bike that looked like it may never run again and had been rode hard and put away wet was the one that fired up on the 1st kick! I’m as big of a fan of burnt rice as I am of British design and there were enough 70’s and 80’s Honda CBs along with Kawasaki KZs to form a bridge from the US to Japan! One trailer had so many stacked side by side I couldn’t even get an accurate count! I’m rather partial to the 78 CB750 because I own one and it was my 1st car. My other favorite is the 77 KZ1000 Because I had one of those for a touch over a decade. I personally witnessed a moped hauling a dirt bike on a rack made for a trailer receiver hitch as I stood there with out my camera in hand, timing is everything! Following that sideshow act was the man on a Yamaha dirt bike who tried and failed at riding wheelies through the parade of bikes….that impact probably left a mark but on the plus side I think the bike and the asphalt survived the crash just fine…. Hey I don’t mind a few stupid human tricks for the crowds amusement and no serious injuries occurred despite the helmets, shirts, and boots the riders seemed to all be missing. Aside from the nonstop stream of motorized machines rolling by and the endless rows of vintage parts and bikes there were also races happening! They had the street track and the dirt track running full speed all day long. The street track was being taken on by a whole slew of mid-70’s Norton Cafe racers when we caught a glimpse of the action. The dirt track seemed to be anything and everything off road capable, 2 stroke, 4 stroke, mopeds, and minis, round and round, up and down they went dust never settling in their path! Honestly if you

manage to be bored at this event it is your own fault! What would an outdoor motorcycle event be without food ?! They had a concession stand full of burgers, brats, hot dogs, BBQ’s, polish sausages, french fries, chips, beer, water, and soda along with ALL the fixin’s! The staff was friendly and fun and they had a well oiled machine running when it came to being organized. I generally have eyes bigger than my stomach and held true to that at the event, I covered my ¼ pound polish sausage with sauerkraut, jalapenos, and onions then added a giant boat of fries on the side…..I followed all of that by wishing my jeans had an adjustable waist! What a day, if you ever happen through Ohio I’d make it a point to swing through Lexington and check out the AMA’s schedule of events and I’ve heard they have an impressive motorcycle museum also. We decided to take a ride after our 5 hour stroll of the event since we were only 600 miles into our weekend. We rolled interstate across Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio on the way out so I decided to take back highways on the way home. We managed to blast out around 300 miles before sunset and holy hell did I discover that not all of the midwest is flat, straight, and boring! Guess I’ve just been riding the wrong routes for the last 20 years! We ended up in Monticello Indiana for the night and wow were the people there friendly and helpful! The gas station clerk and 2 customers gave us directions to a hotel in town and then the hotel clerk gave us a map of local bars and restaurants for dinner. The Sportsman Inn right along the river on highway 24 was well worth the visit! Great view off the back patio, live music, great food, and the beer was cold! Can’t ask for much more out of a dinner stop! Then Sunday morning arrived way too soon as usual and it was time to hit the road and gain some miles home. 7 hours and way too much of Illinois later, we arrived back in our own neck of the Wisconsin woods. Excellent way to spend a weekend, one of these days we should check into an Iron Butt challenge, we left at 2 on friday afternoon and rolled back in 1200 miles later at 3 PM on Sunday. Definitely not the most miles I’ve ever put on in 48 hours but man did we have a blast! I suppose I have bored you enough with my rambling for this month! Catch you all again soon! Thanks for following along!

I am always reminded of my mother saying, “That you should always be careful for what you wish for.”, but I never really thought about it until the last month with the heat wave that we have been hit with across the province of Ontario. Those record breaking temperatures has hurt some of the rides and events that take place this time of year. Just about every event that I attended was affected by lower attendance due the high heat and humidity! I certainly feel for some of the clubs because they up their game each year and take great pride in bringing it home for whatever charity or cause they are sponsoring. In mid June The Celtic Brotherhood held their Awareness Ride for Brain Injury and while the weatherman talked of some potential rain it turned out to be a beautiful sunny day but the humidity drove the temperature which was 28 degrees to 35! While everyone was having their brotherhood breakfast in the morning it was fairly

comfortable, but by the time all the riders returned to the Greely Legion and had their lunch most of the riders just wanted to get out of the sun and cool down. Hillbilly and the Bikers Church Crew were originally going to be putting on the rodeo for the Awareness Ride again this year, but sometimes love gets in the way. One of the well known members of the Boozefighters MC had asked

Hillbilly and the Bikers Church to perform a wedding ceremony for him and his bride to be! Lets face it, you can’t fight true love! So in place of the Bikers Church, Duane Chevalier, Jeff Landry and the rest of the Simple Men MC came down to host the rodeo for the event which included two new portable burnout pits that Eyes of Odin MC made and donated them to TCB. Even with the repressive heat there were lots of very familiar faces taking part in the ride and one surprise was bumping into an old friend of decades, Stephen “Coop” Cooper, who after retiring from the federal government decided to move back to the Maritimes and is now an The Rider’s Mag - Page 70

active member of BACA. While I am mentioning BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) I would like to thank the Ottawa Chapter for showing up at this event in full force and kindly putting up an information booth about the work they do! Many of the children that this great club work with and protect have already been subjected to possible head trauma and/or PTSD! Bringing awareness of these two conditions are major mandates of The Celtic Brotherhood who hosted this event. The afternoon provided me with the opportunity to spend some time with people who are well known in the Ottawa and area motorcycle community and many of them I consider personal friends. Tom “Thor” Allain and his lovely wife, Nathalie Lacasse came by and stayed for a few hours and that was a real treat for many of the riders especially the members of BACA as Tom was one of the original founding members of the Ottawa Chapter. Dick Budge, who is a rider from the Cornwall area came up to participate in the ride. I may shoot thousands of pictures a year but I never call myself a photographer! Rather, just a fairly good photo editor, but Dick, he is the real thing and he even knows what most of those little buttons and switches on a camera actually mean! unlike me, too funny! Owner of Canadian Gears, Johnny Racine and his lovely wife MarieJosee took part in the festivities which is no surprise because, not only is Johnny considered a Brother by TCB! Besides myself, I don’t think anyone attends and supports as many events and causes as Johnny Racine. Alain “Cowboy” Bussieres and Sue Adams came up from Cornwall to both support the event and to be one of the vendors as well! While I am mentioning Cornwall, I should say with great sadness the Dedicated Few RC has disbanded, but, on a happy note the president who is a good friend and brother, Perry Montgomery has now become a striker for the Simple Men MC and was helping out the boys at the Awareness Ride. It was a good time and I look forward to taking part in next years event and thank everyone who came out to show support for The Celtic

Brotherhood. As I mentioned in my last month’s column, the Simple Men MC have moved their clubhouse to the village of Forester Falls where they now inhabit the Orange Lodge Hall that was built back in 1933. Because it was used for all sorts of social functions in its 85 year history it was an ideal choice for a club that does a lot of fundraising for local Ottawa Valley charities! They have on numerous occasions, opened the clubhouse up to the locals so they can come in and visit and get to know their new neighbors! When Duane Chevalier mentioned to me that the village had asked the club to ride their bikes in the Canada Day parade, I decided to head up and not only do whatever I could to support the club but to experience Canada Day without all the political glitz like in Ottawa and scope out their new clubhouse for myself. The Simple Men had decided to throw their own party for the Forester Falls community and had arranged to borrow the use of four of the outdoor commercial shelters TCB use! They went all out, what with, purchasing dozens of water pistols and filling hundreds of balloons with water! They even rented a bouncing castle for not only their own kids but all the kids in the village to play with all day! They served free hot dogs to anyone who wanted one and provided tours of their clubhouse to the locals so they could see that their newest neighbors in the town were not some “criminal biker gang”! What you don’t want is the local rumor mill making up stories about what goes on in your clubhouse! The best way and the best time to do to stop it, is right from the beginning and its paying off for the club.

the 100 or so that TCB contributed! I have to tell you by about 5:30 when the parade was getting ready to start everyone was relieved just to get it over and I think there was a definite vote amongst the members of the SMMC that one of the next things to be added to the new clubhouse was a fully operational shower and I can understand why. The parade was short this year because many of the townspeople are older and the heat was a monster! While I waited for the parade to come by the clubhouse so I could take pictures I expected the motorcycles would lead the parade but they were to follow in the rear and by the time they made the short parade route I doubt that any of the members had any hair left on their legs from the incredible head from their motors. It was one tough Canada Day but because of all the good people both in the club and their supporters I would gladly do it again next year. Earlier in the column I mentioned Johnny Racine, owner of Canadian Gears located in Carleton Place just west of Ottawa and on July 7th Johnny and his wife, Marie-Josee hosted the Break The Chain Poker Run and Show & Shine with all

TCB had brought up some of the chopper “trikes” and volunteered to put on demonstrations of their Busted Bucket Challenge but by the time all the rigs were up and things were ready to go just about everybody was seeking shelter from the sun and the nearly 50-degree temperature! While the coolest place to be was the clubhouse lounge downstairs when you throw a party for the community it requires you be outside to be part of it. The kids had a great time between soaking each other with water all day long and the heat obviously didn’t curb their appetite any because every hot dog got eaten including The Rider’s Mag - Page 71

the proceeds going to Teen Challenge Canada. They help rehab young people with drug dependency and as I mentioned earlier Johnny is just about everywhere supporting other clubs and their causes! I am sure the heat once again played a factor in rider turnout but kudos to the members of ARM (Association of Recovering Motorcyclists) and especially BoneZ, and Simple Men MC’s Duane Chevalier for their support and respect to a cause that was special to Johnny. I would also like to thank my brothers, Chucky and Hark from TCB along with some of the ladies that put up with us, who came out to donate and feed all the participants a free breakfast and to show our support to Johnny’s charity of choice. As I continue to point out to you all, there are always lots of events that are put on but you should always consider those that are put on by local clubs because those are the same people you hope will come out and support your event. Nuff Said! The last event I want to mention is the Ride for Autism that took place on July 14th and as many of you may know autism is a cause that is very special to me and also to this rides founders Dave and Noella Kuhnle! They have two granddaughters with a form of autism! Dave will be very familiar to many of the riders in Eastern Ontario because he is very tall and you can find him helping to cook the free breakfasts that The Celtic Brotherhood provide to other clubs events and charities. Like last year, the morning started out looking like it was going to rain but never did and by lunch and when the riders began to return the sun came out and the humidity went up! Between that and many area riders having gone down to Port Dover for Friday the 13th attendance was down! I want to thank all the riders who participated especially BACA Ottawa, Ottawa Valley Ramblers RC and the Eyes of Odin MC for taking part as well as my good friend and brother Keith Fong! We had a surprise visit by one of Ottawa’s leading blues singers, the lovely Maria Hawkins who has offered to come and sing for the Autism Ride next year, she is a truly classy lady. While attendance was down to about 80 bikes, with the auction and donations etc the ride raised about $16,000 dollars and brings the total to well over $90,000 dollars towards early identification of autism in The Rider’s Mag - Page 72

children and allows for early diagnosis and programs which can mean a much fuller and productive life for children born with autism. With The Celtic Brotherhood being the host club for this event you can imagine that we fed everyone both breakfast and lunch and we want to thank Browns Independent Grocer for both the food for the BBQ but also the use of one of their parking lots to hold the event. Thank you, Ottawa. Aside from everything else I have written in this column and more in future issues of The Riders Mag I wanted to mention something that is sort of an epiphany that came to me while we were involved with the Ride for Autism. Those of us who belong to Clubs are often asked why we do what we do! Many of us would have very similar reasons. During the Ride for Autism, the band was playing and one of the granddaughters of the founders who was in front of the stage enjoying the music! All of a sudden, I noticed that one of the brothers, Hark, aka Harold McGee had disappeared and was out dancing with this young lady with autism! I found myself posting this on the social media the next day complete with pictures. People may wonder what makes The Celtic Brotherhood special to me. Certainly there is the bond of Brotherhood, then there is, helping others whether by supporting other Clubs and their rides and events and sharing a lifestyle of motorcycles and freedom but most of all it when you see one of your Brothers dancing with a young lady with autism and seeing the smile on her face! To my Brother Hark! You make your Brother proud.. Nuff Said! A couple of upcoming rides to put on your event calendar are the 2nd Annual Tay River Rally held up on the edge of Perth July 28th at a facility that helps both military and first responders deal with their PTSD and as someone who lives with PTSD everyday for almost half a century, I ask all members of the military community who ride to please come out and help the Eyes of Odin and The Celtic Brotherhood put on a rodeo and other events for the residents of the center. On the same day, ARM (Association of Recovering Motorcyclists) will be holding their ride and rodeo near Smith Falls so if you have the opportunity please consider supporting these great guys because BoneZ and Blair try to make to everyone else’s event. On August 11th the Last Disciples MC will be having a benefit ride to help a brother who is recovering from serious back surgery and this will be taking place at the Capital City Bikers Church. Also on the same day, down in Cornwall the Road Snakes Riders Club will be holding their 5th Annual Motorcycle Show & Shine and I will do my best to participate in this event later in the day as we had a great time last year. One other thing that I want to ask all of the readers and supporters of The Riders Mag, there are over half a million Brain Injury Survivors in the province of Ontario alone and many of them are bikers but even if they weren’t, they are family members, friends, neighbors and people we work with and they need your support for the “Invisible” Injury so please contact your local Brain Injury Association and help out whether by donating or in some other way and if you are not sure who to contact then please email me at the address below and I will find out for you, thanks! If you would like more information about it or any of the other events I mention you can go on Facebook and go to “Motorcyco Beau’s Biker Events & Rides In Eastern Ontario” and you can also check out my Facebook group “Motorcyco Beau’s Biker Friendly Businesses in Eastern Ontario” as well. As always, I urge you to support the events and rides that are created by bikers and clubs in your area because unlike slick organizations that run events the local riders and clubs will be the same people that come to support your event. Also please remember to spend your money with businesses such as those that advertise in our Mag or who have proven they are truly Biker-Friendly and have shown their support for our lifestyle and in turn deserve our support and business back. If you have any issue that you think might be of interest to your fellow riders please reach out to me and let me know either by email or on Facebook. If you have an event or ride or you are a business that deals with either motorcycles or the people who ride them you might like to advertize or even perhaps become a distributor of “The Riders Mag” and if so please contact me by email or by phone. As always, I want you to please remember that we make our Motorcycle Communities stronger by making them better! email: theridersmag.beau@gmail.com Twitter Riders Mag East @ motorcyco_beau You can also read us online : www.theridersmag.com/ online ......
