Thanks for your support

RNR CUSTOM CYCLE LTD. 108 Beaumont Cres., in Guelph

Ryan has been one of our loyal supporters since day one of the Mag. He started out in motorcycles as a hobby but the bug bit deep and his love of motorcycles evolved his interest, talent and mechanical aptitudes grew and took him to levels that he didn’t imagine back in the early days. He apprenticed with one of the best around, Bob McKay back in 1988 and he was his mentor and his inspiration. Ryan opened a shop of his own in 1996 starting out in rental buildings building a strong reputation and becoming a solid presence in the motorcycle community and a name synonymous with Custom Motorcycles. He found the property that houses his present Shop and settled in here where his business has flourished and seen steady growth ever since. He built a loyal customer base based on hard work good work and treating people honestly and fairly. Ryan believes that you only get out of something what you put into it, and he works hard to provide the type of service his customers deserve and expect. He has eight lifts that are all busy all the time so it is obvious that he is succeeding! He has produced many fine looking custom bikes over the years and continues to do so and he tells me that he has a couple in the works right now that will have people talking. He continues to Judge the motorcycle competition at The Super Shows each January and looks to maintain his stature as one of the best in the business and eventually complete the cycle from hobby to professional and owning his own shop and expects to slow down at some point in the future and take it back down to the hobby level and perhaps help someone else begin the cycle!

more comfortable. He also does car and truck interiors and concentrates on good service and customer satisfaction!

Make it Roar 12 Carrying Place Road, Trenton, Ont.

Harold opened this shop in 1999 when he retired from the Armed Forces. He started his service in the infantry but ended his career serving as an Avionic Technician at the Trenton Armed Forces Base. He loves everything about his business, especially working on bikes that he has found in old barns and back yards and bringing them back to life. He is a one man show and his own boss and works mostly on Harley, BSA, Norton and Triumph and he continues to Make it Roar!

It’s been a busy and interesting spring for myself and The Mag. They seem to have my health issues sorted out, but they are still running a bunch of tests and have added more drugs to my daily regimen. I abstained from alcohol for a bit over a month in order to not aggravate the ulcers any more than I have to! That being said, we are adding a couple of events to our own itinerary this year. 1st being a regular Thursday Rider’s Night at Kosmos Restaurant and Bar, 1225 Gorham St. Newmarket. This is directly across the road from Black Gold Knife and Leather, who is also a part of this event. It will be starting every Thursday starting May 4th from about 5:30 on until we have nothing else to say or do. There will be door prizes and we will have our own Riders Mag Hosts and Hostesses there to get things going and keep it fun! We also are thinking of running Saturday or Sunday breakfast rides out of there. The food is great so come on out and join the fun! We may

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 12

even be able to lure some of our writers like Lil’ Red out of her Campbellford stomping grounds (actually that would be “Slinking Grounds” because Lil’ Red doesn’t stomp unless you provoke her, then it’s on you!) from time to time. We are also doing another Show and Shine this Year! This is in addion to our usual event that we hold the last Sunday in August. This one will be at Oliver’s Ale House, 6155 Tomken Rd. in Mississauga on June 25th from 11:00 Am unl 4:00 PM. These are great folks! The food is incredible! There will be a live band, door prizes lots of Show and Shine categories and tons of trophies! Come on out and join the party!!! I have been saddened to learn of the passing of several members of the local motorcycle Community in the past Month. I do try but am not always able to get out to the viewings or the services to express my condolences in person as work and medical conditions of my own dictate what can actually do. So please indulge me a few paragraphs to relay my feelings and mark their passing from this Earth. Josh Gardiner the Son of long-time friend and fellow rider Deanna Gardiner and Grandson of “Panhead Perry” lost his battle with Cancer a rare and aggressive form of sarcoma that gave him 4 months from diagnosis to the end on March 21. He was a wonderful young man and 18 years old is far too early to depart this life. He rode with me a number of years ago on a memorial ride for his Grandfather, taking charge of my Nikon and getting pictures of the ride and it’s participants from the back of “Petoonia” He was loved by all who knew him, his presence will be sorely missed but he will live on in the memories of his family and many friends forever. Around 600 people attended the funeral to pay their respects and support Deanna and the rest of the family during this devastating situation. Deanna wishes to convey her great appreciation to all and The Paradice Riders MC for the beautiful floral arrangement! GBNF - RIP! “Big Jay” Outlaws MC South Simcoe. Jay succumbed to the Cancer that he had battled cancer the past 12 years on Wed March 22, 2017. Again I was

unable to make it out but Roger and Karen did an excellent write up and a fitting tribute to their brother. L&R, GBNF, RIP. Keith Hill – I have met Keith on many occasions over the years and in fact Gypsy and I ran into him at while we were covering The Peterborough Swap Meet the previous Sunday and as usual he had lots of stories to tell and was enthusiastic about getting his bike ready for the upcoming season. His friend Jen James who is far more qualified than I agreed to write a piece on Keith for the GBNF page in this issue. Thanks Jen! RIP Keith!

Spring Motorcycle Show 2017 We had been anticipating and setting up for this Show for quite some time and thought we had things pretty much under control and we have learned much from years of experience, doing these events. But I have to face a couple of very real facts; 1) No how matter prepared you think you are something will still come up and bite you in the ass! 2) The more confident you are that you have things under control the bite will be twice as hard and leave marks! To start with I was still getting caught up with the remnants of last Month’s deliveries and other left-over items due to my medical episode that had put me in the Hospital for six days and was still dealing with Drs. Appointments, tests and other issues. Now we were back on deadline with the Mag trying to get articles written and edited, cartoons drawn, photoshoots shot, models hired, and all the other stuff normally associated with getting the Mag out! The new issue was coming out on the Thursday before the Show and trying to schedule deliveries and get stuff done for the show was just “Heaven on Earth”. This was going to prove far more stressful than the “Stress test” appointment with my Cardiologist that I had to work around earlier that week! The Trike had not yet been unloaded from the trailer since The Super Show in January and had not been cleaned and there were many other items still in there with it that we wouldn’t be taking with us to this show that had to be sorted out. Plus we needed to get modifications made to the bar unit so that required me to haul it over to my pal Dusty who had built it in the first place, and plead for his help. Pleading wasn’t really necessary as Dusty’s generosity and accommodating nature is only surpassed by his tremendous woodworking skills and craftsmanship! It was ready to come back the next morning! Now I needed to throw myself on the

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 13

mercy of a few more friends and with any luck at all, I may actually be able to pull this off! Squirrel, our resident photographer, was called upon to clean out a space in his shop large enough to set up his bike for a shoot to do some promo shots for our newly designed Support shirts, pins and patches as well as perform modelling duties as well while I was rounding up a female model. The Amazing Ashley stepped up and Mother Nature even threw us a bone and gave us a brief window of fantastic weather in which to do the shoot. Al did a great job editing the pictures in Photoshop and sent the files on to our buddy Ron at CompuSign in Holland Landing. We needed to make up two banners and we were hoping that we may get them by perhaps Saturday. When we sent the files on Thursday morning, we knew that what we were asking was next to impossible but we had to at least try! Ron apparently ‘Can do the impossible’ while you wait but for miracles he may need a day or so. This must have just fallen in the “Impossible” category because the banners were ready to go Thursday night! To further complicate things, I had designed some new support shirts and had then being printed as well so had to work in getting them picked up too, but my buddy Dan at Alfagraph had volunteered to deliver them to the show for me. Thursday the Mags came out and I did my usual Westerly swing while Al, Scott, and Gypsy looked after getting the Fed Ex stuff, subscriptions and post office stuff done! It had been a long tiring day for all concerned but we got

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 14

through it! The other deliveries would have to wait until the following Monday! Friday morning’ after picking Gypsy up from “Gypsy Manor” (Actually a caravan of Wagons secreted away from prying eyes somewhere in the forests of York Region!) headed back down to the warehouse in Aurora and loaded the Mags for the Show then headed back to the office to load up the rest of the stuff that included Donny Peterson’s books that he had dropped off the day before. There is an expression that many hands makes for short work! There is another expression that I’m going to coin: “Many hands, personalities and opinions when mixed together in the proper proportions in stressful situations can be the ingredients for a brawl!” Al, Scott, Squirrel, Gypsy and myself we got all we could crammed into the trailer, my truck and Squirrels Jeep and headed for the show. Tension was building and stress levels were running incredibly high, patience and tempers were being tested and sense of humour and tolerances were being stretched to the limits, but so far there had been no fistfights, gunfights, knife fights, no one had died or been maimed, no blood had been spilled, no cops had to be called in and no handcuffs, strait jackets, tranquilizer darts or other sedation methods were brought into play! So far so good! We were joined at the show by our cheerful little firecracker Lil’ Red who was in town for much of the weekend to help out and our Eastern Delivery dude Larry stopped by to help and we got everything unloaded and the booth was set up as good as possible for that day. The rest I would bring with me the next morning.

With the added activity and products in our booth such as The Trike, Donny Peterson doing book signings and our resident artist Kim displaying her work and the additional support gear our booth size has increased as well! Our Riders Mag booth at one time consisted of a simple 8 foot banner that was strung across the back of the 10 x 10 booth with lengths of twine and pull ties, an old fold up table with a black velour cover that would be draped over the table to hide The Mags underneath and some support t shirts that we would hand from wherever we could. Now we take up 30 feet of space and will likely have to increase that for next year’s Shows. It all adds up to more stuff to handle, more people necessary to make it all work, and

more tension. I was so glad to head for home at the end of it all and settle in with a glass of rum or two. Our involvement with The Rideau Rendezvous that is happening in Sensaonal Smiths Falls this July 14 – 16 means additional workload being placed on us. I look after hiring and outfitting the models who hand out the fliers and brochures, promoting the event at these shows. While we had an excellent crew of ladies at The January Show and would have preferred to just bring them all back once again, this show coincided with Daytona Bike Week and several ladies had surprisingly opted to enjoy their motorcycle experience in the warmth and sunshine of Florida over the cold, rain and snow that we had here! Go figure!!! This meant that I had to come up with at least two more models to join the lovely Briiana and with help and recommendations from friends managed to come up with two exceptionally gorgeous ladies. One of the ladies, Ali, is also a new advertiser with The Mag as owner of Sinful Delight Bouque at 3 Clapperton St. in beauful downtown Barrie, Ont. It is a fantastic looking (and smelling!) shop selling lingerie, swimwear, shapewear, sexy apparel and

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 16

accessories. She is a friend of Mad Mary’s who said she would be happy to help us out! She was incredible and between her, Briiana and another very lovely blonde lady by the name of Brittany we had a full roster and The Rideau Rendezvous and Pace Law (who are the main sponsors of the event) were well represented! I introduced them to Pace Law Motorcycle Division Volunteers Ray and James and they were good to go! Our Saturday crew consisting of myself, Managing Editor Al, Scott, Squirrel, Gypsy, Miss Kitty, Lil’ Red along with her husband Mike, Donny Peterson, our resident arst Kimbel, and her husband Robert we got down to the task at hand and had the booth up and running before the doors opened. It may not have been the prettiest booth at the Show but we were functioning. With things running smoothly I grabbed my camera and wandered off, heading for the Show office to register the Trike for judging. I didn’t enter it because I expected to win anything! There are a lot of Trikes out there in pristine condition and hours of detailing go into them before they are brought to the Show. Many of them are ridden rarely and don’t see much rough treatment. I’m prejudiced, but I think my Trike looks not too bad in its own right! It is special to me because of all the work that was put into it by so many friends. The paint job that Jabber did for me is excellent, the design is good, it is functional and runs great! The Douglas fir box that Dusty custom made for it serves the purpose and is fantastic looking and my pal Dave the upholsterer did an incredible job on the Tonneau cover and the seats and there is lots of Chrome. But for me, the reality is; she is a working vehicle and does what she was designed by me to do, carry The Riders Mags, my fat, tired old carcass and whatever else I have to carry wherever I need to go when I need to go there and bring me back safely! She works hard, sees a lot weather (Not all good!) a lot of miles over a lot of roads (Not all of them are pretty!) and doesn’t embarrass me in front of people…..often! She has seen a lot of hard bugs, soft squishy bugs, big bugs, bigger bugs, great big bugs, little birds, big birds, bird shit, low branches, brush and brambles, dirt, manure, fields, streams, puddles and rugged terrain while covering a lot of events all over the Province and she has had the occasional 50 spilled on her to boot. She has been a spot on which to pose pretty girls, not so pretty girls, slim girls, not so slim girls, naked girls, near naked girls, and girls with enough layers of clothes on they could survive three years in Antarctica and the occasional Big Ugly bearded buddy, dogs, kids and whatever else I come across in my travels. She gets regular mechanical maintenance but complete washes and detailing’s are few and far between, because for me, time is at a pre-

mium and very limited, I have a lot of miles to cover and need to be riding not cleaning. I’m certainly not ashamed of her but in order for me to win anything the Judges would have to be very damned forgiving of a lot of little things like the odd well-earned scratch, scrape or scuff and something far less than super clean! But I figured “What the Hell?” I’m here, the Trike is here, why not be part of the Show instead of just being there and registered her! I got to hang out in the office with Peter Derry and a bunch of their fine crew that work so hard to make these shows a reality. They are a great bunch of people and don’t get anywhere near enough credit for what they do and how well they do it! The reality is these shows are a shitload of work and they know full well that they are not ever going to please everybody! They do their best to keep these Shows fresh, interesting, informative and useful. They try to bring in something of interest of for everybody and try their level best to cover the whole spectrum of motorcycling. They have new bikes, used bikes, old bikes, custom bikes, choppers, deckers, really old bikes, vintage bikes, small bikes, big bikes, really big bikes, electric bikes, trikes, scooters, touring bikes, side hacks, sport bikes, racing bikes, drag racing bikes, off road bikes and dirt bikes, It is also a Swap meet so they have whole bikes, parts of bikes, old parts, new parts, rusty parts, shiny parts and parts of parts, body parts, stuff to repair your body parts. They have stuff to make you go fast and stuff to make you stop quickly! There is stuff to lubricate your stuff and grease your stuff and stuff to ungrease and unlubricate your stuff! They have vendors selling anything made of leather, plastic and Kevlar! They will sell you paint and painted products, chrome stuff, shiny stuff and stuff to clean your stuff and keep your shiny stuff shiny, and your leather stuff soft, supple and waterproof. There is stuff to protect your eyes, head, hands, feet, ears and your skin from stuff like the harsh winds and natural elements like those harmful UV Rays of the sun and your hide from road rash. There are insurance companies to protect your life, your property and your valuables! There are lawyers to protect you from all kinds of things and fight for your freedom and your rights! There are riding courses and schools to teach you how to ride or ride better. There are clubs and organizations for girls, guys, old, young, and everything in between. There are rides going everywhere under the sun and to places where the sun don’t shine. There are rides in support of our military, past, present and future. There are rides to increase awareness of our Veterans and rides to raise money and or awareness for ev-

Trikes and Len and Ernie were busy fielding questions about these unique machines. Their display is immediately recognizable by all the gorillas and monkeys. There are times when I wonder why I do this! It certainly isn’t for financial gain or the easy going, stress free pace that I can live my life. I often wonder when I write my stuff if anyone really reads it. Then I get to come to these shows and meet our readers and I’m amazed by the comments and the actions and reactions to things I have written, I had a gentleman stop by the booth and give me a bottle of Papaya Enzyme that he claims will settle my stomach issues. This was something that he bought for me and brought it here to give to me, brand new and unopened! That made me feel good even without taking one of the capsules! I get asked constantly how I’m making out with my knee, or my shoulder or if I whatever fixed on Petoonia or my trike or whatever I had chronicled in one of my columns. It is genuine, humbling and reaffirming. Mr. Henke who sells collectables has for years been bringing me 50 stuff whenever he comes across it and this show was no exception as he handed me a rare 50 mug and an opener to add to my collection from his booth. He has some amazing stuff! I meandered through the various halls visiting with people I knew along the way. Many of them are advertisers but most of our advertisers are also friends and we have built up relationships over the years that go beyond business. In the Swap Meet section, I found all the usual suspects who travel from all over to be here with their vast arrays of parts, tires, batteries and all kinds of assorted treasures spread out on and under tables or hanging from racks. Rocco from Authenc Cycle in Markham, Ryan from RnR in Guelph, Fred Hale and Family from Pefferlaw, Dino from the London area and so many more were there offering great deals on their wares. Shawn McCooey and a couple of great looking ladies were promoting his upcoming “World Famous Fort Erie Swap Meet”, May 7th and selling bottles of “Harley Air”, allegedly collected directly from the exhaust stream of an old Harley Knucklehead. He also had cans of “Road Kill Stew,” the contents I’m assuming varies from place to place and season to season. He is quite the character and you never know what he will come up with next. Not that he needs any more crazy ideas but maybe “Port Dover Air” that was harvested by a drone hovering high above Port Dover on hot and steamy Friday 13 afternoon. I also ran into Timothy Leigh Bell, Bike Lawyer Extraordinaire and got to talk for a bit as he

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 19

had escaped from his booth for a while! On my way from one hall to the next, I happened upon our very own “Pizza Dave” giving cred to his moniker at a Pizza Booth with a slice in each hand and stopped to talk awhile before moving off to see the rest of the show. My wandering had given me a tremendous thirst coincidentally I found myself in the Beer Garden and noticed my two favourite bartenders were here once again and noticed that when they saw me heading their way they immediately started mixing my drink. They have been working the bar at these shows for a lot of years now and are always a pleasure to talk to. I found a table by the stage and as luck would have it Terez Leathers Leather Fashion Show was about to begin. I noticed that a couple of the Models looked familiar, and then realized that two of our Models, Briiana and Brit-

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 20

tany were in the Show. Terez had been impressed by their wholesome good looks and demeanor and got them to model some of her amazing outfits! I was thrilled for the girls! Continuing on, I stopped to talk to Gord at Black Gold to talk to him a while and he seemed to be quite pleased with the Show as business was brisk. I moved on through checking out the fine displays by various clubs and organizations like the Highway of Heroes Ride, Ride for Dad, The Blue Tie Ride and The Cannonball Rides all vying for the attention of attendees. Classy Chassis and Bens Bikes as usual occupied a large bit of space with a huge assortment of used motorcycles that were getting a lot of attention. They go all out all the time and seem to live by the slogan “Go big or stay home!” Motorcycle Enhancements also had a lot of fine looking motorcycles, and the Rat Bike that John had built was still drawing huge crowds who were scrutinizing it carefully. It is a real work of art and a testament to John Cosenni’s imagination, creativity and mechanical genius. He always has some amazing bikes on display and they always do well when the awards are given out! He had a new display at this show that was causing quite a stir. The Texaco bike that was the brainchild of Scott Parker, a retired Firefighter who took his vision to John who made it a reality. It was unveiled to the public and to owner Scott at the beginning of this show. Scott hadn’t seen the completed bike himself until here and he was blown away

by the motorcycle and the display as were the spectators. As usual, there were lots of great looking custom bikes on display and it was great to see Monte Carlos and his wild creations back at the show. I had made it through the entire show spending a lot of time in the vintage bike section mesmerized by the huge display of great looking bikes and in awe of the time and patience that had to go into the restoration of these old classics. It was great to see Alex Senior out to the show! We were a team at these shows for a lot of years before his health declined and he had to slow down but he still loves to come out for a while at least so JR gets him here. The day flew by and after the awards were presented we tore down our booth packed up and headed for home. We did quite well at this show! Our newly designed Support merchandise went over very well, and Donny Peterson moved a good number of his books and got to visit with a lot of fans, friends and acquaintances throughout the Show! Kimbel was happy with her venture and Miss Kitty and our whole crew got rid of every Mag we had and to top it all off, the Trike won 1st Place Award in the Trike Class. Thanks to our whole crew! You did a great job! Thanks

to Peter Derry and your whole team for doing what you do and doing it well! See you next year!! Peterborough Spring Swap Meet 2017 I was supposed to have a truck full of people go to this event with me and I cleaned out all the crap that had been occupying the back seat. But by morning Bad Bob had called and said that he couldn’t make it. Deadly Doug texted me to say that he was in mourning for his chickens who had been brutally murdered by some kind of small but nasty kind of animal that had gotten into the coop while Doug was away in Florida. I envisioned Doug

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 21

with his full on CSI white sperm suit complete with the little slip on booties combing the crime scene looking for clues from which to identify the killer or killers! I half expected a call from Gypsy telling me that she wasn’t going to make it either but when I pulled up in front of Gypsy Manor at the prearranged time she was ready to go but had a lot to say about the ungodly hour we were leaving and a bunch of other complaints and observations that included the fact that she needed breakfast and coffee and so it went! We did stop for breakfast which did quiet her down somewhat and made our way to Peterborough, arriving at the Swap Meet just before it opened and toted in a bunch of Mags. I had also brought along a whole bunch of old Biker Magazines that had been collecting dust and taking up space in my office for years. There were copies of Easy Rider, Supercycle, and such dating back to the early ‘80’s when I used to draw cartoons for many of them. I was giving them to Mr. Henke and we carted them in as well. There was a good turnout although a couple of the vendors didn’t show up but there were plenty of people anxiously digging through piles of parts on table tops in crates and

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 22

boxes and stashes under the tables. Edjo was set up there with a table. One of his guys spotted me and called me over saying that Ed had dug out the horn for a 53 Panhead that Deadly Doug had been asking him about when we had met him at Classy Chassis months ago. I explained that Doug couldn’t make it (I didn’t go into it about the chicken thing as I didn’t want to embarrass poor devastated Doug.) I tried to call him but couldn’t get him and said that I would buy it for him and take a chance that he hadn’t found another

and still needed one. I wandered around visiting here and there searching the piles for something I needed and getting some pictures. There were lots of people I knew there both buyers and sellers so I was keeping myself busy and entertained. Again, there were all the usual suspects, Bob from Eagle Eye, Fred and Amy Hale, Harold from Make it Roar, and many more and they had parts galore! We hung around a while then headed back, swinging by Doug’s place to deliver the horn. We had just missed the funeral service for the chickens but the smell of incense still hung heavy in the air and Doug’s eyes were puffy and damp from the tears! I’m sure that he has it all on video! The horn seemed to cheer him up and he broke out the beer handing me one of the cold 50’s that he keeps on hand for me. I didn’t mention the empty egg cartons that I’d hope to get filled during my visit but damn I hope he gets more chickens soon! Tradional Motorcycle and Custom Works – I hadn’t been here before and never met Patricia or Brian but they

seemed real nice on the phone. I entered the address into my trucks GPS and headed North on what was shaping up to be a gorgeous day. I actually drove right by the shop despite the GPS continually telling me that I’ve reached my destination on the left before her terse “Turn around Now!” command had me pulling to the side and looking back. “It can’t be that building! It’s huge!” I told myself. Then I spotted the large colourful sign. Sure enough, Tradional Motorcycle and Custom Works! I turned around and went back expecting to find multiple businesses sharing the large space. Nope, it was just them! I parked, armed myself with my trusty Nikon and headed through the large open door to see motorcycles everywhere! “This is one busy shop!” I thought to myself. I wandered into the showroom and was met by a very pretty lady whom I had properly identified as Patricia, Co-owner, office man-

ager, bouncer, former boat refinisher and soon to be my Model for the day. We also established that her one and only costume would be what she was wearing. We also established which bikes we would be shooting and Brian proceeded to wipe them down and move them out to the parking lot where I would shoot them. It all moved along very quickly and efficiently and it was probably the least complicated shoot I’ve ever done! Patricia came out, I had her pose on one bike and then the other, she was natural, relaxed and comfortable and all the shots seemed to work just fine, no costume changes, no hair and make-up no Floozy wear or high heels. I went in and did the interview with her and Brian and the crew. Wandered the shop getting some pictures and got a chance to talk to Craiger who I’ve known for years.

The shop and the crew have a nice friendly vibe and everyone just seems so relaxed! It was translated in the pictures that I got of Patricia on either bike, calm and collected. They certainly have a lot going on here and have some great plans and when they get the custom paint area set up and get the hydro graphic up and running the work should just keep on coming. On a final note don’t forget the Fort Erie Swap Meet – May 7, 2017 – Always lots to see and do here! See you there!

One for the road

I’ll admit, this past month has been somewhat of a blur and clusterfuck, if I’m to be totally honest. The Motorcycle Springshow in Toronto passed with little-to-no hiccups. We’ve gone to Cuba for a destination wedding, bringing back whatever Cuba issues most people get in Cuba. I got a nice deep, dark red sunburn that at least accessorized the red in the dress that I wore to the wedding. Then there is the designing of the new vehicle vinyls for L’il Red and (having a total lack of judgement). I’m a Leaf fan, blue and white through and through. Hey!! Don’t judge me! So, the Motorcycle Show was a huge bag of fun. I mean, if a monkey showed up it would’ve made the day perfect, but I digress. Getting to the show the day before to set up was a blast, as I got to acquaint myself with Hugz and Jordan while

helping set up. Writing for the Mag has you communicate and give and gain assistance from fellow writers and editors etc., but you don’t often get to hang out with them (and I think I may have frightened Jordan. LOL). Our ever dependable editor Al was there (and bless this guy for keeping our asses in line), plus Big Scott was helping out as always. Hugz and I had a good laugh being the two muscles that pushed Critters trike in

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 24

…..with Lil Red

place. Of all the hands on deck, us two chickies jumped in and moved it! Getting to the show on Saturday was exciting. I was handing out Mags, wandering the show and met up with a number of readers that specifically came to talk to me. That was awesome. It is inevitably the best part of the show. And so many girls that I ride with showed up to! Ellen and her hubby/nemesis Dan, Bonnie and her hubby Doug, and new BFFs Kim and Lynette came by. Mary Anne even showed with her hubby. It was truly a great show. Plus, Critter showed off some new blue ladies Rider’s Mag shirts that I just had to have! Ladies, it’s fitted and a beautiful blue, I suggest scooping one up! I gotta say, Hugz was all over the booth Saturday. She got so much done for whatever everyone needed. You needed a shirt, she had it! If you needed a Mag, it was in your hand. She had some great folks stopping in (man she knows people), plus the most adorable little guy that wanted the Rider’s Mag sticker on his belly! Those two were far too cute together.

Ray and James from Pace Law were there too. I missed Catherine (Ray’s girl), so I kicked myself for that. I’m so looking forward to their event this summer, The Rideau Rendezvous weekend in July. I had to get an outfit from Ray that advertised this event cause any chance I get to wear it this summer, I’m all over it. As the info on this event keeps spilling

out, it’s just keeps getting better and better. Mike and I did meet up with our bud Rod (Kate was with family) and he was chumming around the show with his Dad and Son. I did try to get a pic, ‘cause I truly love when you get 2nd and 3rd year generations that love bikes at these events. Rod’s dad played shy for the pic, but I’ll get it if I gotta get his wife involved! I chased Rod around to help him get the perfect gift for our friend Kate (her birthday was coming) and I was far too excited to suggest this and that. On her birthday, her and I showed up wearing the same sweater, just in a different colour. So, perhaps I was too involved! We ended up leaving for home around dinner as I was getting tired and quite bitchy. Poor Mike, the guy deserves a medal. The following week we were heading for Cuba for the wedding. First let me say, I did not see any sharks or octopus-like creatures, but at one point in the water, a mid sized fish swam towards me and I almost had a stroke right there! He was a big sucker, and I thought “It’s a baby shark!”. What is wrong with me? Honestly, Mike deals with this DAILY! There’s no medication for this!! God bless booze! We scoured the week looking for bikes. Upon entering the resort Mike had noticed a police bike, and it was nothing like ours here in Canada. It was like a 90’s style Virago! We couldn’t get close enough to confirm the year and model (the cops there can get squirrely when you’re snapping pics of them and their bikes). Going through town though, there was a plethora of bikes and scooters roaming the streets. Lots of Hondas. A whole hell of a lot of Hondas. And one fellow riding a Jag bike with his helmet on backwards, but I think he did that just to trigger the tourists he was talking to.

There were not many tourist folks that we could find at the resort in Cuba that rode a bike. And trust me, we looked. There was a guy on the bus, and one in the restaurant, but I don’t bother with folks when they’re eating (and I was burnt). Mike did notice a guy in the lobby with a Cuba HD shirt on and it turned out he was a lawyer from

Hamilton! As a matter of fact, most of the folks we met were located a driving distance from us. Prior to heading to Cuba, I was told to be careful of the food. While there, besides getting sun poisoning (yes, this is a thing and I’m the dumb ass that would get it on the 2nd day of being there!) I worried

that Mike or I would get sick and our trip would be ruined. But nope, my almost major degree of a sunburn hampered the trip and for the remainder of the days there, (like 5) I was barefoot as I swelled up like a fat kid at an all-you-can-eat buffet serving bacon, so much so that my shoes and sandals would not fit! And I gotta say, Mike and I and some of friends of ours had a chuckle at

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 25

the direction my conversation took went when I approached the front desk and Client Services looking for the resort MD (like I said, the burn was bad) When I asked the front desk for the MD and I showed them the reason for my request, they quickly said, “Nope, you need the gardener.” Dumbfounded, I thought maybe they had no idea what I was talking about. So off to client services, I told them I needed to see the MD and showed them my stupidity. They said, “Nope, you need the gardener.” Ummm does this gardener moonlight as the resort MD?? The next day I located such a man in the pool area. And he quickly resolved my issue with a large machete and a big aloe vera plant. Ahh yes…the gardener. Since coming back from Cuba, I’ve been dealing with Cuba issues from stomach troubles to burnt legs and feet, and a bruised ego. But lesson learned, which is important as we have a biker only cruise coming in December. This time I’m gonna be prepared. Although I did have 60 sunblock on in Cuba, I’m thinking a radioactive suit would be best. We did get our first-of-the-season ride in, but it was short. With sand, gravel and salt still violating our roads, I was not risking my brittle bones and classy ride for a much-too-eager boot around town. It did offer us an opportunity to meet up with folks we hadn’t seen much over the winter, and to see Kate’s new blue thunder (that’s my name for her bike, but she may have other plans). We’ve yet to see Diana’s new red Scarlett bike, with all its new add-ons that were her personal touch! Between Leaf playoffs and helping design and wait patiently for vinyls and patches, I’ve been working on the L’il Red Facebook page. It’s going better than expected. I try to update you folks on bike events, and even have other riders submit their ride info to keep you all informed on what’s coming up and it’s only gonna get bigger. With the Quinte Ride for Paws Poker Run and Ride, The Brotherhood of Bikers Show n Shine, Always Apsley Rendezvous and the Rideau Rendezvous just to mention a few that’s coming. Oh, and don’t forget that Women’s International Ride Day is May 6th. I’ll be out with a few of my buds at the Classy Chassis ride! Follow me on Facebook and keep me updated with your event or ride. You can reach me there or via email at lilred@theridersmag.com. And if you’re a local rider, keep an eye out for those L’il Red vinyls on my bike or on my truck and when you see me, stop and say hi, grab a mag! Ride Safe!

Jason “Big Jay” Mercer, AOA South Simcoe July 9, 1976 March 22, 2017-

It was a sad day on March 22, 2017 when our brother Big Jay, Outlaws South Simcoe, passed away. After a lengthy and valiant 12 year battle with cancer, Jay succumbed to the disease with his wife Lindsey Cole by his side. He was a great father to 3 wonderful boys, Jason Jr, Justin, and Kaylib and a loyal member of the South Simcoe Chapter of the Outlaws MC. His presence, humour and spirit will be missed by all who knew him. The funeral was held at the Drury funeral home in Alliston on March 28th. The funeral home was packed wall to wall with people. The ceremony was a wonderful walk down memory lane...the awesome memories that people had of Jay, going all the way back to his childhood days. There was an amazing turn out of Brothers on their bikes to pay their final respects and pay tribute to the man on a cool March day and accompany “Big Jay” on his last ride. Thanks to George Winney @ Forever Free, for coming all the way from Windsor carrying Jay through the streets of Alliston and to the clubhouse for a toast. It was amazing to see the large pack of bikes leading the large procession of cars, and the respect that was shown by people on the road, pulling over to watch and

allow us to pass and carry our Brother uninhibited. When we all arrived at the clubhouse and were just about to toast Big Jay a flock of birds came out of the trees and circled around above us, and you would think we planned it, the crowd went quiet and then we had our toast to Big Jay! GBNF - OFFO! Thanks to Roger and Karen for the touching tribute.

Keith Hill Keith Hill was a man who lived life. He always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. He was a giving man - always stepping up to offer a helping hand. Keith was the type of guy you don’t forget as he always left an impression. He was like a kid at Christmas looking forward to the summer’s rides and usually the irst to have his motel booked for the trip. He touched so many people’s lives and will be sorely missed by all those that knew him. I will always treasure the friendship we shared.

Sorry for missing you all last month with my awesome stories – it’s been somewhat of a crazy, over-whelming kind of time for me. All very good I must add. We haven’t gotten too much going on over here in the Vancouver area as of yet. Right now it’s getting the bike all pretty and primed for a ride while bending one knee and prying for some sunny days. Been far and few between here in B.C. but it’s coming and we’ll all be out in full force. Braaaapppp Braaaapppp Baby! So while I wait to get out this season I’m gonna share some of my Rides and Show ‘N’ Shines that I’ve put on over the years and the amazing people I’ve met that have become my “Family”. The very 1st ride I ever put together was a memorial ride for a very awesome friend, Greg Tuddingham. Greg pass away March 2010, 3 months before he would have been the BIG Five-Oh from a sudden brain aneurism. 2 weeks before Greg passed we had run into him at Barnes Harley Davidson in Langley B.C., where he rode home with me right after I bought my 2002 Softail, AKA ‘Sally’. It was awesome – a day I will never forget. I got a hold of all our amazing friends, whether they rode or not, to join on what we now call “The Ride for Greg”. The plan was to meet at our local pub, Donegals Irish House and do Gregs’ last ride. We would ride from Donegals to The Sasquatch Pub to Dukes Pub then back to Donegals. This would be a good 100km ride and an emotional one to boot as I

coming together to remember a man that made an impact on us and many, many more. We got caught in the rain on our way to The Sasquatch so we stopped in at Mission Springs Pub to get a little dry, have some grub, a hot coffee with Bailey’s and then hit the road again. When we walked out to the parking lot to head out, I looked up and said out loud, “Hey buddy this is for you so get on your scoot, show us the sun and let’s get this party started”. It was at that moment that the skies opened up and the sun made its way out for us. I truly feel that Greg was with us on his ride and is to this day as we ride every year around June 13th to celebrate Greg’s life. Here’s to you my friend. Forever in our hearts as you ride the highways in the BIG sky. Miss you Buddy.

In memory of Greg Tuddingham. June 13, 1960 – March 24th, 2010

was able to coordinate it for June 13, 2010, Gregs’ actual birthday. I would meet with several friends to be road captains and to make rules that pertain to it being a safe trip especially with the amount of bikes and vehicles that would be involved. It was very time consuming, but allin-all it came together. We arrived at Donegals at 9:30am for coffee and to go over the route and stops. We headed out at around 10:30am and let me tell you, it was the most beautiful sights and sounds I had ever heard. 24 motorcycles and a truck with camper all

The second annual Tilbury Swap Meet hosted by Northside Cycles, held at the K of C in Tilbury had to change locaons from the Legion this year to accommodate more tables. It was almost double the size of last years’ swap meet and looks like they may have to move

to an arena next year if this turnout is any indicaon of how many vendors there will be next year. Everything from new and used parts to accessories for the ladies, leather goods, 81 support gear, sign making, and a what I would call “charity” table hosted by some lovely ladies, that will likely be attending every charity event this season helping with 50/50 draws, raffles etc. I didn’t get there as early as I did last year, but the crowds were sll there, and more coming and going when we le. Good to see such a good turnout for our area and I hope Jim “Cartoon” and his crew keep up the good work. Looking forward to next years’ event. It’s always good to get out early in the season and connect with people you haven’t seen since

the last riding season. I encourage everyone to get out and support their local vendors with these events. You never know what you might find or who you might meet. Thanks again, and ride safe.

Traditional Motorcycle is a collaboration of talents and skills born out of a love for motorcycling and the distinct need for a good motorcycle shop in the area. Owners, Brian Bottrell and Patricia Ross came from different backgrounds, neither motorcycle related. Brian, a licenced mechanic, owned and operated B&C Small Engines where he, as the name would suggest, did small engine work as well as automotive repairs for 11 years out of the rear of a shop on Armstrong Street. The Front of that shop was occupied by Patricia, a hard working single Mom, who had stumbled into a career restoring wooden Muskoka Boats, when she wasn’t helping to run tractor- pulling competitions and a myriad of other things that she constantly had on the go. Brian was attracted to Patricia’s incredible energy, stamina, patience, work ethic and business acumen, among other things and her to his intelligence, resolve, drive, resourcefulness and rugged good looks and they shared a common passion for motorcycles. They decided to join forces and in 2013 Traditional Motorcycle & Custom Works was born. Patricia retired from boat refinishing and the couple concentrated on building a motorcycle business as it was something that was sadly lacking in the area. Brian’s natural and acquired mechanical skills leant themselves well to the World of Motorcycle repair and service and while they continued to do small engine work, the automotive work was phased out as they concentrated more on motorcycles, doing mainly Metric Bikes at this point. They were right about there being a need for a Motorcycle Shop in the area. Word soon spread and business rapidly increased to the point where they had long outgrown their existing location. In 2015 they found this huge 11,000 square foot building at 520 Ecclestone Drive, they bought it, renovated it to suit their needs and moved in. Being savvy business people who knew that they must keep an eye on current trends in the industry and be always mindful of new innovations and opportunities that would enable them to stay on the cutting edge of industry and offer the best possible service to their customers! They also

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 36

came to the realization that renovations were going to be a constant part of their lives from now on! A fact that has already become abundantly clear, as their showroom undergoes yet another major transformation and their decision to seize the opportunity to bring a full Hydrographics system into their plans now meant revamping the 4,500 Square foot area that had been allotted to be the custom paint area in order to house all the new equipment. Their willingness to invest the extra time, effort and money shows their commitment to their business and the Motorcycle Community. Their self-confidence and their desire to be in for the long haul is obvious and reassuring to the clients who entrust their motorcycles to them and translates into good business relationships. Brian and Patricia have become a big part of the local motorcycle scene and Traditional Motorcycles and Custom Works supports many local charities, events and community projects. They are very excited to be participating in The 2017 Cannonball Rides. They have a small but very capable crew with Patricia running the office, showroom, parts and inventory. Technicians, Brian, - Garry Saunders who is their Metric Specialist and Ken McKinney keep up with the workload and their customer’s satisfied. Greg McChesney does an excellent job doing pick-ups and deliveries and moral support. There is another gentleman in their midst who holds enormous credibility especially among Harley –Davidson folk from far and wide by the name of Craiger. While not listed as an actual employee, his shop equipment and tools occupy a large corner of the massive shop from where he consults and advises on custom builds, fabrications and Harley related projects. Craiger is well known for his abilities as a Harley technician with tremendous knowledge and expertise in high performance, machining and custom metal fabrication. He also brings with him incredible knowledge in the area of motorcycle handling! He firmly believes that while a bike should look good, if it doesn’t handle properly, looks is all that it has and it isn’t

worth much! Tradional Motorcycle does work on all makes and models of motorcycle, dirt bikes, scooters, big, small, and anything in between including small engine work. They do it all, custom builds, custom paint, fabrication, welding, perform repairs, regular maintenance, rebuilds, oil changes, batteries and winter storage and while they have done some used motorcycle sales and may look to it in the future, it is on the back burner at present. Most of the work they can do in house but things like chroming and powder coating they can get done through their enormous professional network. There is a huge well-lit showroom full of great deals on motorcycle gear and apparel, helmets, gloves as well as the full lines of Chrome goodies and accessories from all the major suppliers. If it isn’t in stock they can order it in for you. While, as expected, many of their customers are local or from areas North of them, their reputation as being fair, honest and good at what they do is spreading and they are starting to see customers bringing their bikes to them from points further South as well. Plans for the future are to let the business continue to evolve and establish itself within the Community as it has been doing and to grow and expand as the business requires and budgets permit. Stop in and check them out sometime!

Nuckfest 2017

I love adventures. So, when I saw an advertisement for Nuckfest (a Beard and Mustache competition), which was scheduled for March 25, 2017 in Barrie, ON at a bar called Scky Fingers (150 Dunlop), I was interested and determined to bring that trophy home. So I asked myself, “is there any reason why I shouldn’t participate in this event?”, the answer was No! My second question was, “Has Captain Morgan put his foot down yet?”. No! Therefore no + no = yes. I called my pal, Lee Baldwin from the Guelph area, who sports a pretty good beard. I asked him to meet me in Barrie. He was all in as well. I traveled the four hours from Windsor hoping it would be worth the trip. When first we walked in the pub we knew we were in for an awesome party. Lee and I met the organizers and Co-founders of “theyeardproject”, brothers Mike and Marty Speyer and had a chance to chat about the event. Marty had this to say about the fundraiser: “Nuckfest is our yearly beard and stache competition. We have now had 2 events and the 3rd will be happening in 2018. Nuckfest is about competition, comradery, fun, broadcasting up and coming bands, and mixing beard clubs in our neutral environment to raise money for #theyeardproject, a not-for-profit company. The challenge is to grow your beard for a year to raise awareness and funds to send children with Crohns, Colitis and IBD to camp. We can help anyone with these diseases, but we have chosen #Got2Go because it makes an immediate impact to helping children. These camps meet the needs of these amazing children (ie: medical staff, diets, appropriate activities), where the children can meet and socialize and make friends with children who suffer from the same diseases. Last year, we were able (with our partners) to open a camp called #Got2Go in Ontario. Mike came up with the name #theyeardproject as originally planned. Only the 2 of us guys were going to grow our beards for 1 year… clearly it got bigger.” Lee and I elbowed our way up to the bar and watched the pub fill up with competitors. Eventually, there was more hair and whiskers in there than a Greatful Dead and ZZ Top double bill concert. I thought I traveled far to compete, but I met contestants from New Jersey, Winnipeg, Pittsburgh, Montreal and Detroit. That’s a pretty solid slate of supporters to make that long distance trip to attend in Barrie. There was great entertainment from the bands, vendors and swag to purchase, with plenty of good folks all there for the cause. The pictures accompanying this article show just some of the characters we met. This was a very well-run event and the competition was expertly organized and fun. I will definitely be going back in 2018. The winners of the 2017 Nuckfest: Best overall – Darrell Crawford Under 4 Inch – Rob Turpin 4-8 Inch – Kevin “The Pirate” Duncan 8-12 Inch - Andrew Kloss Over 12 inch - Darrell Crawford Best Mustache - Jason Yarina Partial Beard - Luke Sumpter Freestyle - Ben Samuels Fake Beard - Adrienne Hintz I placed 3rd in the Best Mustache, just barely though. That female Russian weightlifter was a staunch competitor. Lee Baldwin came in 4th in his beard category. This year’s Nuckfest event raised $4,000. Mike and Marty Speyer would also like to say #theyeardproject has been successful because of the people that support it,

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 38

not the ones that started it. We appreciate every dollar raised, as do the children that benefit from it. Mike and Marty of #theyeardproject would like to thank their sponsors: History Barbershop, Back to Barbering, Canadian Redneck Beard Co., Previously Mad Viking Beard Co. (but they still deserve a shout out), Music Pro, Dunlop Billiards, Beaus Brewery, 16 Pt Beard Co. They also received help from Manhood Beard Co. A special thank you to: Sticky Fingers for allowing us at their venue. Justin David Ross, one of our Admins, for making trip from Manitoba to help with Event. All supporters and competitors. Bands Pyramid Theorem, Atmora, Polarity and The White Swan. Also, big thanks to Todd Vermilyea for all of his hard work running #theyeardproject booth and billiard events at Dunlop Billiards and The Riders Mag. If a reader would like to donate they can do so at www.theyeardproject.org . They can either make their own profile page and donate to that or choose another person in which they would like to donate on their behalf. All donations from the website and Nuckfest go directly to CCFC for camp #Got2Go. The Pirate Bernie Marn

The sun is shining, the street sweepers are out and thus begins a new riding season in Northern Ontario. Quite a few rides are already in the works for this year’s season and my schedule is filling up quite fast. If you haven’t yet gotten a hold of myself or my right hand man Rebar to cover your events, better do so very shortly. This month’s topic will be touching on just a few of those rides that we’ll be attending as well as some dedicated advertisers with the Mag. But before I do that, I just want to mention that there is quite a variety of bikes and bikers in our region. We have the young parent with three kids going out to get milk at the corner store on his on road/off road 125cc knobby tire ride complete with 3/4 helmet that has attached to it some kind of camera that sticks out straight up in the air like a “Teletubbies” antenna, looking as odd as the day is long. Other riders that have their bikes rolled out in the driveway, spending the better part of the day cleaning and polishing only to throw the tarp back on it once complete, and back in the garage. We can’t leave out the midlife crisis riders that no matter how ridiculous they look thinking they still fit in a medium leather jacket that they wore back in the high school, peer pressure days. They’re scooting up and down the same roads making sure that the whole neighborhood hears them claiming their piece of the lifestyle pie, looking down at their engine pretending to be a seasoned mechanic troubleshooting what could go

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 40

wrong instead of looking out in front of them at the roads, traffic and pedestrians. Now, can’t forget the wannabees ... waiting for the busiest time of the year to get their bikes into the shop to get servicing done as well as the repairs they swore last fall that they would have all winter to do and thinking they should be priority on everyone else’s list just because. If you didn’t support your local shops during slow times of winter, don’t expect them to run to your rescue at the first sign of trouble this spring, learn to balance your lifestyle and only then you will enjoy true harmony. You can start by learning to check your own oil... Isn’t this a great variety of “Bikers” we have in this lifestyle? Gotta love them all as they all serve a purpose. The Rock - HD-100 Canada Celebraon The Rock, Harley Davidson will be celebrating Harley’s 100th year in Canada for an Open House & Swap Meet/ Sidewalk Sale. on Saturday May. 27 from 10am - 4pm. If you want a Table at the Swap, call Donna at (705) 682-4463 and she will set you up. Signatures & The Horse Tavern 1st Annual Charity Run Save the date for the First Annual Charity Run held right in our own backyard of Chelmsford, Ontario with a joint venture of two great businesses, Signatures Restaurant on Hwy 144 and The Horse Tavern on Errington St. June 24th is the date for this activity consisting of a great ride to the French River and back for some awesome food at Signatures followed by entertainment at The Horse Tavern to cap it all off. Mark your calendars and stay tuned to this column in the next couple of months for updates and more info. We expect to see you there to support your local ride. We at the Rider’s Mag will be on hand to participate and cover your event. Powassan Motorcycle Rally Held on the long weekend of July from Friday June 30th at 12pm to Sunday July 2nd, this new rally has been created to replace the former Biker’s Reunion in New Liskeard. Riders from southern Ontario will be pleased to see that it’s situated a little closer for them to attend than the previous year’s rally. This being the first year, The Rider’s Mag wishes them Good Luck and we’ll be on hand to help promote and advertise so the event can continue to grow and prosper as it’s all for a great cause. Check them out on Facebook at “Powassan Motorcycle Rally” and stay tuned to the Rider’s Mag for event updates. Ride Manitoulin One of the Northern Ontario’s biggest

event this year will be happening on July 14th & 15th and it will be happening in one of the most beautiful area of Northern Ontario, more precisely Providence Bay on Manitoulin Island. Whether you take the Chi-Cheemaun ferry or highway 400 to highway 17 to come north, the breathtaking scenery will leave you in awe and wanting more. Make sure to save the date and drop by this fantastic event. Check out their new website at www.ridemanitoulin.net Rocking on the River Blind River’s Best Kept Secret is being held this year the same weekend as before being the Civic Long Weekend on Aug5th & 6th. Producer Guy Serre has assured me that it’s going to be “Over the Top” again this year and he never fails to deliver on his word year after year. With a line-up such as a Waylon Jennings tribute show as well as a Tragically Hip tribute band along with a whole list of various other artists such as Sounds of Stories from Ottawa, Whiskey Farmer, Paul Hache, Swampdawgs and Sudbury’s own Sulfur City. Compiled with an open category bike Show and Shine, this event is sure to thrill everyone. For full details check out their website at www.rockingontheriver.com Remember there are limited tent and trailer sites available so book early! At this time, I would like to take a moment to congratulate Brother Willy on his recent accomplishment. Welldeserved Brother and looks good on you. On behalf of the Rebar, myself and the Rider’s Mag North Ontario, congrats! Kudos also to Gord and the Filthy Fifteen of which you’ll be hearing more about in the coming months. In the past few weeks, I’ve been pro-active in trying to contact the locals from Northern Ontario in order to let them know that the Mag is here for them. The last thing I want to do is disappoint any club, group or organization by not covering their events because of not knowing about it or being double booked as most of my weekends are filling up with activities and pre-bookings fast. If I haven’t gotten a hold of you, please contact me at the information here below. Stay tuned to this column in the next few months as I will have pictures as well as reporting from several Northern Ontario events that are scheduled to happen as we ramp up our riding season. Although most people have been out and about already on their scoots, the main events seem to happen only from mid-June to early September only. I know there are several others, by invitation only events, that are happening as the Northern

Ontario biking community is alive and well up here and it’s only a matter of time before it grows even more. If you require information on the Mag from Northern Ontario like advertising, coverage of events or even just getting a printed copy, the best way to get a hold of me is through text @ 705-662-1526 or email at ThatNorthernGuy144@gmail.com. Use your smartphone to scan QR code to get all the contact information. Ride safe! This month’s quote is quite simple: “Being a biker is much more than riding a Bike and wearing Leathers, You feel it in your Heart and in your Soul. Never try to explain it to others as they’ll never understand...” Old School Ride 1976 by Brother Rebar Put your old jeans on. You know, the pair that you use to work and ride. So dirty and oily that they are now water proof. Pull on your weather beaten engineer boots. Then put on your favorite shirt, the one with the 2 front pockets and the 1% diamond on the chest. Slip into your colours and walk out to greet the hot sunny morning.

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 41

your hands off on your jeans to continue the water proof treatment. Now fire that horse up again for more riding. It`s a very gratifying feeling to be able to repair your bike and continue riding. Many bikers can relate to this short story. Flat tires, broken throttle cables, ground wires breaking off and many other scenarios. I loved those days and I know some of you did as well. At the time of all the break downs, it sucked. But we can look back now and cherish those old school rides.

“Remember to check the side walls for cracks” Brother Rebar.

Check out your Iron Horse for any visible defects. Key on, fuel cock open and twist some fuel into her. Then kick start into a loud vibrating life form. West bound on highway 17. Sun on your back and the smell of fresh dew in the wind. The feeling of freedom on the highway is so exhilarating on a sunny day. A one hour drive at 70 MPH and you’re at the Espanola / Manitoulin intersection. A good place to stop for fuel and a cup of mud water. Fueled up and back out onto the highway for more riding. Rolling along and all of a sudden the fu%#&n chain breaks. On the side of the road with a broken chain in 1976 is not the same as it is today. No cell phones and many miles from any gas station. But you always have your trusty tool bag with tools and odd parts. So take the broken link out and hook the chain back together. Wipe

It’s official it’s riding season for sure even with the occasional threat of flood or a few more centimetres of snow but I hear that almost everybody I know has started bringing the motorcycles out of storage and getting them road worthy and just the other day I stopped by at B.A. Machine Performance Cycle and they were besieged with bikes dropped by owners itchy to get out on the roads. When I was a kid, your parents told you that it was spring when the crocuses and tulips started coming up but let’s face it, for all of us in the biker community it’s the roar of pipes and street washers that signal riding season has arrived. Normally much of my May column revolves around our going down to the Toronto Spring Motorcycle Show but this year we took a pass on it because there is so much going on and I enjoy helping out where I can any established rides or events as well as doing whatever I can for any new ones that have contacted

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 44

me and asked for input. I have mentioned this in earlier columns but I am going to say it once again, this looks like it is going to be an awesome summer for the eastern Ontario motorcycle community. By the time this month’s issue of the Mag is in your hands the official declaration by the City of Ottawa that May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, on April 29th may have already taken place and if it has I hope that many of you came out to show your support because it is a big deal. For any city or province acknowledge that more has to be done about making automobile drivers more aware of the fact they share those same roads they drive on with motorcycle riders. Far too many of our community are injured or worse killed every year by drivers who didn’t see us until it was too late. May 6th is the Capital City Bikers Church Annual Swap Meet and besides being the biggest swap meet in eastern Ontario it is also one of the largest social events for bikers and this is a must event for everyone. Hillbilly & the crew at the Bikers Church do a lot for our community and they also do it well. Please be sure and drop by the Riders Mag & The Celtic Brotherhood tables and say hi to everyone and also to pick up an flyers or brochures we have regarding future events and rides later this summer. May 6th is also International Female Riders Day and I know there are a number of women’s riding groups that will be out in force and I hope that some of them might consider stopping by the Bikers Church either before or after their rides to show support for the biker community and to just plain remind everyone there are women in the wind and we are glad they are. I would also like to remind all my readers and especially

those along the 401 corridor that on May 20th there will be a Ride for Mental Health hosted by Kingston’s MotoSport Plus and I would really appreciate it if the motorcycle community in the vicinity of Kingston come out and show their support for this worthy cause and I hope to make it. The next day May 21st in Ottawa the Burn Out Boys RC are having their annual ride which will start at B.A. Machine Performance Cycle and end south of Ottawa for their somewhat famous burnout party. Brenda Saumure, a member of BOB and quite an accomplished artist has designed and made a special BOB table with the logos of several area riding clubs and other designs painted on it. From the pictures I have seen so far this table is simply awesome and any biker would be overjoyed to own it. The table will be raffled off and the proceeds will be used to send as many children with type-1 diabetes to a special camp. I also want to mention

that there is a strong possibility that B.A Machine may be putting on a complimentary breakfast for the riders thanks to The Celtic Brotherhood so the reasons to stop by just keep growing and growing. On Saturday May 27th I will be in Cornwall taking part in the annual Ride for the Children’s Treatment Center hosted by the Dedicated Few RC and last year we had a great time and there was a large turnout with members of Ottawa

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 45

Chapter of B.A.C. (Bikers Against Child Abuse) taking part. It figures that anything regarding the health & safety of children would be important to the brothers & sisters who belong to this worthy organization. It is such a short ride to Cornwall and such a good cause I hope I will see many familiar faces from the Ottawa area taking part. On the 28th of May the 2804 Dice Run takes place in Casselman which is less than a half hours drive from Ottawa. While I mentioned it last month I intend to ask you once again to please try to make it out to this event. Many of us have backgrounds and history in the armed forces and you don’t see many towns that actively support young men & women who are considering making a career out of joining our military anymore. But this ride is all about that and deserves our support. I will be there as usual handing out copies of the Mag to the public and showing support for the event and for the memory of my good friend and brother, Denis Renaud who founded this event so as always, please stop by the booth and say hello! Also on May 28th for all my readers in the Belleville-Kingston-Trenton area there is the Ralph Kitchen Memorial Ride being held in the town of Madoc and all the proceeds are going to the Brain Injury Association of Quinte. While I would love to be there because brain injury awareness is so important to me and the TCB, I know my good friend and supporter of the Mag, John Putnam will do an adequate job of representing us. If you live in that area of the town please get out and support this worthy cause. June 3rd head down and support the 13th Annual Cowpaddy Boys Poker Run which will be taking place at the Bridgeview Restaurant in Johnstown on Hwy2. Just near the bridge that crosses over to Ogdensburg N.Y. Keep in mind that this crew of people do a lot for our community and I see many of them supporting other clubs and events all throughout the summer. Be sure to make it to their Cowpaddy Boys Rodeo & Roast that happens this August 18-20th this year.

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 46

As many of you may know already the Awareness Ride (Brain Injury) will be happening on June 10th with the ride starting at B.A Machine Performance Cycle and winding up at the Greely Legion. As a member of The Celtic Brotherhood I hope you will come out and support this very worthy cause and hopefully have a helluva time. I would like to remind everyone that the Ride for Autism has changed their date this year to the July 8th starting out at Brown’s Independent Grocer on Main St. in Stittsville. I should mention that most of the ads for many of these events are always found adjacent to

my column so you can easily find what is going on in our area. One more new ride to the eastern Ontario motorcycle community that I want to bring to your attention is the 1st Annual Shriners Ride & Poker Run that will be taking place this June 24th and as I mentioned you will find their ad nearby this column In earlier issues I have mentioned that as I get more information regarding the Rideau Rendezvous that is taking place in the town of Smiths Fall in mid July. This event is looking great and I expect to have much more information for all of you in the next issue of the Mag. As this is the beginning of the riding season I would like to encourage all clubs & events to consider the possibility of acquiring your

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 47

own portable heart defibrillator to keep on hand or to bring to events just in case a rider should have a heart related issue. You often hear on the news about how at some sporting event somewhere a life was saved because there was a defibrillator nearby and The Celtic Brotherhood try to bring one to every event that they attend and perhaps it is time for the idea to catch on within the rest of the motorcycle community. At The Riders Mag we are all about the people who ride the motorcycles, not the bikes and we want you to be proud that your motorcycle community. As always I remind you to support the rides and events that are created and put on by actual riders and clubs in your area because they are the same people that make the effort to come out and support your events or rides. At the same time to always support the rides and businesses that advertize in our Mag, they are truly Biker-Friendly because they have shown support

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 48

for our lifestyle and they deserve our support back. If you have an event/ride or you are a business that deals with either motorcycles or the people who ride them you might like to advertize or even become a distributor of “The Riders Mag and if you want to, please contact me at the email address below. As always please remember that we make our motorcycle communities stronger by making them better! Breaking news in New Brunswick: I found out that the “village idiot” (from the Feb. issue) can read! About two days after the Feb issue was delivered I had another visit from the RCMP, supplying me with another court date in regards to the previous charges (that I thought had disappeared). After checking with the court and the officer in charge, I found “Atlantic Jeff ’s” column is now attached to my file. After consulting with the officer in charge I was asked (not ordered), that it was in my best interest not to write about the incident anymore, therefore (with respect for the officer in charge), I decided not to pursue this comic strip any further.(for a while) It may shorten my article a bit, but we did increase our readership substantially (the RCMP , court system, lawyers etc.)! As I write this, I was about to say the weather has broken here. The snow between my bike in the back shed and the road is almost rideable and then I noticed more of the white shit is starting again! Hopefully it won’t stick to the ground! The bikes coming out tomorrow no matter what! Earlier this month (Apr) the Boss and I had the opportunity to head down to Fredericton for the Bacchus swap meet. Due to a late start, and the crater like potholes, due to the severe winter, on the 116 to the venue, we arrived at about 2:00 in the afternoon. Outside the hall we had the pleasure of meeting a new riding club, GUARDIANS OF THE CHILDREN CANADA, who serve as a public benefit organization to educate the public about child abuse prevention, and to create a safer environment for abused children. (gocfredericton@gmail.com). A great bunch of people! Check them out. Inside we were greeted by Sideshow and Machine (Bacchus m/c) and a whack of empty tables. Apparently we had missed the venue by about an hour! I was fortunately in time to meet up with the A.C.C. reps and join as an

independent as they were in the process of tearing down their booth. Also, I met up with Robin and crew from 81 Maritimes for a short chat as they were disassembling their booth. Robin (H.A.M.C) was one of the very few bikers who actually braved the weather and rode to the show! From there, we took a short drive over to the Bacchus Club House and shot the shit over a few beers with the boys, finding out they had about 300 people pass through the show. Another successful event. From there it was homeward bound via a longer but faster route with well paved roads. (Note to self for next year) Now it’s time to prepare for the Bacchus, Albert County swap meet on the 29th of April in Riverside where we are going to meet up with Nova Scotia Rob. Until next time,Atlantic Jeff signing off. Be Well!

Northern Lights Christian Riders and The Christian Motorcyclist Association. Once the fun was over it was back to the task at hand, getting the Riders Mag set up in Alberta. I have the Face Book group, “The Riders Mag – Alberta” set up with some good local content entered and is growing daily. If you can please check it out n join in adding any local bike community related events or postings. Next was to keep going on the Mag’s distribution outlets.. For now I have been dropping copies off at Gasoline Alley HD in Red Deer, Calgary HD, Kanes HD, Destination Cycles in Airdrie. Top Rocker Motorcycle Gear Ltd, Badlands Choppers, The Newcastle Bar, Last Chance Saloon (Wayne). In the Grande Prairie area, please stop into Chaotic Kustoms or HD of Grande Prairie (Mighty Peace) for a copy of the mag. With this complete and finding the Drumheller area ended in what looks like second place for Canada’s most rider friendly community competition. The first place winner is likely to be Port Alberni BC (where one of our BC writers Angela Lives) but not to be officially released until early May. One thing Drumheller still has is a great riding community. This will be shining this May 6th in the Valley at the Top Rocker Motorcycle Gear Ltd’s Rosedale establishment. To help usher in a new safe season, Top Rocker to the benefit of the Salvation Army, will be holding a Blessing of the Bikes ceremony and Charity Poker Run. This will be an excellent time for a great cause so please come show support and take in some riding in the Badlands area. I see a lucky few on the Alberta roads lately with this becoming the norm. With the roads cleaning up and the return to regular riding, let’s get the rust off and find a great local awareness ride to support to help increase rider awareness in the communities we live. These early gatherings are a great place to kick off the group riding for and awesome cause. If you can post some pics of your destinations and receiving charities, we would love to showcase them here to the community. Please send me your thoughts at dan@theridersmag.com Thank you Dan T

It was good to get out and see some familiar faces n what better place in the early spring in Alberta but the Swap Meet. Put on by the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group, Central Alberta Section. Packed tables of vintage hard to find prizes were everywhere as well as the familiar faces. I bumped into Dennis Maday of the 69er miners (retired). A page from Alberta’s history for sure lol good to see you. The Venue was great despite being a no colors facility. The Apostles MC was on hand with their friendly crew n some great stuff. Some of the other groups in attendance were Bikers Against Bullying,

Twin Cam upgrade or a New Boat?? That is the Queson... The saying goes, “He who dies with the most toys wins.” And since the “experts” can’t agree whether my ‘06 Ultra (48,000 km.) actually needs the cam upgrade or not, I said to my wife, Angie, “I’d like to upgrade to a bigger fishing boat with a real trailer”. Her shocking response was, “You don’t need a better boat, you have enough toys: your bike, canoe, and me!” Somehow, I can’t argue with that but... So father in law Al and I park our bikes a few weekends in the season and take our shared 12’ aluminum P.O.S. boat, heft it into our bike trailer and go to the lake. Don’t get me wrong, although the trailer is dumbaxx awkward, this boat catches fish. Al putted our 6hp P.O.S. into a bay in Woodstock next to a $25,000 boat with a camo donned fisherman, caught a large bass in minutes and took us back to camp. You should have seen the disgusted look on camo guy!! Still, a more comfortable boat with real seats and steering wheel might get approval...hey, Angie’s never even been in our little boat! I wonder... Meanwhile, there’s some that remind me to be a “fisher of men” like Jesus said in Matthew 4:19 but I do my work and deserve a fishin’ break don’t I?? The problem is, in short Ontario summers, which toy will I play with this weekend?! We all know that there are so many great motorcycle rides and events that we could be at three to five different places on most weekends. This always begs the question of “which toy?” and I wonder if the saying should really be, “He who dies with the most toys is sll actually dead.” The wonderful thing is that this doesn’t have to be the true reality of life and death! Last month I wrote about the hope of Heaven that Jesus talked about many times. God expects us to carve out a little piece of heaven here on Earth while we’re blessed with life, family and friends. He also provides assurance that we have no worries about death regardless of how many toys we acquire. “Believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions,” says Jesus in John 14: 1-2. As Pastor Dave says, “I am not afraid to die; just worried about the pain that may come with it.” You ought to have that kind of peace of mind that God promises by simply having faith in God “and the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7). Please pray with me now: Heavenly Father, I do have faith in you and your Son Jesus Christ. I ask you to draw close to me now for the riding season and please keep me, my friends, and family safe. Thank you for caring for us. In Jesus’ name, amen. Keep an eye open for Bike Blessings across Canada and tell them you’re a believer. (Hamilton Bikers’ Church Bike Blessing is postponed until next year).

Many blessing to you all this season! Pastor Ken 905 870 8584 kenang@cogeco.ca www.hamiltonbikerschurch.com

I was telling you about where I was going August 20th, so here we go. I left for Ron’s, a friend of mine, to go to the Bacchus Poker Run in Montague at the Tailgate Bar and Grill. We met my daughter, Jenny and a friend Caitlin, who was riding my Road King. We all went in to sign in, have a beer and talk to some of the bikers there were there. Jenny and I went out to take pictures and she said “dad, you got me for the rest of the ride”. She likes the way the Sportster drives. I said “good enough, you can take the pictures while you’re on the back”. Caitlin and Jenny

came up with the Villains from Summerside. Korey asked if I was coming back later and I said I think so, but I had all day to go and I’ve been going since Friday. We haven’t even left the Tailgate yet. So off we go, on the run. One of the spots was the Black Rafter in Souris and we stopped for a card and a beer. We talked to a bunch of Bacchus from B.C, Newfoundland, and Ontario. We got back on the road to our number 3 spot at Shipwreck Point Café. I asked Jenny to take a picture of a house that was round and a lighthouse. She agreed that it would make a great picture. See if you agree with us. We then left for the 4th stop, Trailside Café in Mount Stewart. It was a quick stop because there were a lot of bikes before us. We left for the 5th stop and that was back to the Tailgate Bar and Grill in Montague. My daughter got hungry and ordered some Mozzasticks. 20 minutes later she ordered a clubhouse toasted. She must have been really hungry. Road had somewhat the same and they both said it was good. I came to the conclusion that it was the right place to eat. I went outside to the deck and saw a guy I had seen a few times before. He was a Harley Club member but I didn’t remember his name. I have gone on their poker runs for over the 20 years I have been living here. I asked when they were having their run, and when I could go and drop off some Magazines. He said the long weekend in September, so I gave him my card and told him to give me a call. I’d like to get up there with some Mags if I can get them from Critter. I’ll ask him when I phone him later this month. March Well here we go, another great year. The snow is almost gone and I’m in my shop getting my bikes in shape. I’m ready for my first party on March 25th at the Villains club house for their 2nd anniversary party. Well, I woke up this morning to 5 to 10cm of snow blowing up my driveway. Oh well, it’s the Saint Patrick’s Day storm! Last one of the year, I hope. Maybe I will be able to ride to the party. We will see. March 25th arrived and I still have a lot of snow, so I had to take my jeep to the clubhouse. I was greeted with a can of Budweiser (alcohol free) and a lot of smiles from the Villains and other club members that knew I couldn’t drink alcohol anymore. They had a lot of food on the tables and everyone was having a great time. The night was a great success and I had a lot of fun talking to all the people. I went out to get my camera to take some pictures, but when I looked in the glove box I realized I had left it on charge at home. I don’t have any pictures from that night, but what I do have is the pictures from the poker run. I’m not sure why they didn’t make it into the mag with my other article... they probably got lost in cyber space. Sorry boys! It was a great ride! I’ll write again soon! PEI Billy’

All of us who ride can attest to the sensory overload that happens when we ride. The wind buffets our body, the smell of sweet pastures and spent exhaust, the richer sounds of all the activities unfolding around us and the unobstructed open road. But the thrill of the ride can be a dangerous one if not careful. This is meant to be a cautionary tale and I in no way want to rain on anyone’s parade, but statistics don’t lie and we should head to common sense. Canada-wide since 2010 motorcycle fatalities have been between 180 and 200 deaths each year and account for approximately 10% of all traffic fatalities according to Transport Canada’s Motor Vehicle Collision statistics and 11.1% of all injuries. When a motorcycle crashes there is a 96% chance that the driver and passenger will be injured! When you compare that with “Cager” statistics it’s obvious that when we go down our asses are truly in the wind. Consider these statistics when the amount of registered motorcycle drivers continue to rise each year, at a rate of 84% higher, from 1998-2007 and in 2015 in Canada there were 709, 258 registered riders. For most of you, you likely have been out for at least one ride and have begun to dust off the cobwebs for a safe and enjoyable 2017 riding season. There are so many things that need to get done and are often overlooked when preparing your bike and yourself physically and mentally for the Chaos that exists amidst the “Cagers”. Facebook at times produces a gem for us to reflect on and Mr. Rod Salsman out of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia penned a few words in response to him hearing of the first motorcycle fatality in our region. With Mr. Salsman’s permission I would like to share his words… “Sadly, this past week New Brunswick had their first motorcycle fatality of 2017. I know nothing of the circumstances of this tragic incident but it did bring back thoughts spurred over the years by friends and foes who have left us behind due to the excitement of their first ride of the season. After being snow bound for several months, we are all chomping at the bit to take advantage of the first sight of dry roads and a glimpse of sunlight. To get into the wind, regardless of how biting it may be, twist the throttle, and once again feel as one with our machine of choice. There is no way that I would counsel tempering that enthusiasm a single bit. That would be about as practical as standing on the shore telling the tide not to come in. However, I do want to remind each and every one of us of a couple of simple but extremely important points.

First of all, none of us, regardless of experience are as sharp on our first ride of the season as we were on our last

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 57

throttle and clutch to ensure they are operating properly and give your bike a walk around to satisfy yourself that all is well. Finally, when you set out on the road for that first thrill of the season, remember we haven’t had those hard driving spring rains yet, so there is a winter’s accumulation of salt, sand and debris lying in wait on almost every turn lurking to steal our traction without notice. The roads are wrought with cracks, heaves and of course the beloved pot holes that warrant attention and of course our biggest nemesis, the Cagers are sublimely unaware of our presence this early in the season so be extra vigilant. These may seem like minor, nobrainers, but trust me ignoring any or all of them can cost you your life. I personally know too many that it has. Be safe out there, and enjoy every ride this coming season allows you to have.”

ride of the previous season. We’re rusty and our skills have to be honed over the first few miles. Recognize that and ride accordingly. Secondly, and these are not in any order of importance as I believe they share that stature equally. Your bike has been sitting idle and depending on the conditions of storage, tire pressure can and mostly likely has diminished, cables can dry out and stick, as well as brakes. Before taking the bike out, spend just a few minutes checking it over. Use a tire pressure gauge on the tires to ensure they are inflated properly. Move your bike a short distance and check that your brakes are working properly, even visually inspect the thickness of the pads. Test your

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 58

No matter the experience of the driver it is all important to remember some of these simple but important points. Thanks again Rod. Tips to Stay Safe 1. Before riding do a check of your bike. Use the acronym T-CLOCS stands for Tires, Controls, Lights, Oil, Chassis and Stands. 2. Make yourself visible-ride like a peacock make sure they know you are there 3. Be extra cautious at intersections and drive defensively at all times. 4. Wear the gear! Flip Flops are for the beach not the road.

5. Stay engaged in your ride another good riding strategy is offered by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation encourages riders to use their SEE (search, evaluate, execute) strategy to keep their minds engaged on short or long trips. In searching, you use your eyes to continually monitor road and traffic conditions. You evaluate every potential risk. And you quickly develop and execute actions to avoid problems. Just recently I was given a very good lesson. On Good Friday my son and I, riding two up on my Heritage Softail, heading over to the “Dawghouse” to show him a couple of bikes that might fit the bill for his first road bike and a graduation gift from his “old man”. I had already put in about 600 miles this season and was feeling confident that my feel for the bike was back. We came into a familiar to me long turn and maybe a little fast, my 6’ 7”, 250 pound son riding bitch, when my line wasn’t quite right and the floor boards started scraping and I knew I was running out of road. My years of riding saved my ass. I didn‘t panic! I rode it out, I didn’t over-correct and had to use a bit of the shoulder and thank God it was nice and compact and wasn’t too high or we would have been in the rhubarb. That little bit of extra weight and my exuberance for hitting the throttle could have turned into a tragedy. It can happen at any time to any one of us. I would far rather share with you a wedding, a graduation, or a retirement not a funeral service!!! Please ride safe!!! Lots of things going on in our region in the next month which include: Saturday, May 6th The Blessing of the Bikes in Truro, NS, which is always very well attended with hundreds if not a thousand bikes and riders. On the same day The Bikers Down society is hosting a fundraising dance in Dartmouth at Montes Showbar and Grill; The Brotherhood of Bikers have their Roar to the Shore Swap meet at the Italy Cross Fire Hall on May 13th; The Truro Temp Chapter Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) 100 Mile ride is on May 20th, starting

at the Valley-Kemptown Firehall heading to Parsboro and then back to the Engine Room in Truro for live entertainment and a silent auction; Blessing of the Bikes May 28th in Kingston, NS. Get out for a ride, share in the brother and sisterhood of the road, have a safe riding season and support some of these great organizations.

A.B.A.T.E. Pool Tournment 2017

The 6th Annual 8-Ball Shoot-Out for local charity Childcan (childcan.com) continues to grow in support raising much needed funds for families with children with cancer. I was fortunate enough to cover last year’s event and was greatly impressed – this year I was blown away by the sheer number of people. All provincial ABATE chapters donated time, prizes and money. I counted 4 MCs stepping up by paying a $15 registration fee to play, buying 50-50 tickets and spending large at the prize table. Special thanks to 81, Boozefighters, Gate Keepers, Phantom Thunder and Wolf Pack RC for their support. Chico is the provincial president of ABATE. During a conversation, he told me last year’s event raised more than $5000 for Childcan. This year the number is expected to rise, due to the larger than expected turnout. Childcan is the London-based charity that raises funds to provide responsive and compassionate support services to families facing the journey through childhood cancer. That support

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 60

comes in many forms, including meal & parking vouchers, individual family assistance, and unfortunately at times, bereavement support. They work hard too, with 44% of revenue coming from fundraising events such as the ABATE tournament and 71% of all revenue is plowed back into charitable support. For those of you reading this and have an extra $20 kicking around please reach out to them at childcan.com and make a donation. As Chico and I continued our talk we discussed ABATE and membership. He said two new chapters rose the ABATE flag in ’16 (Chapter 7 south Huron and Chapter 8 Brantford). He added membership gains for existing chapters are up as well. A later conversation with chapter presidents Mooch from Brantford, Curly in Kitchener and DJ of Woodstock all confirmed an increase in membership. Woodstock is at 38 members with three more sitting at the prospect table. More on ABATE’s newest chapter below. Anyway back to the tourney. 48 teams began play around noon on 16 tables at Hustler’s Billiards, in London. Owner, Ernie Valence, was also on hand and was presented with a plaque from ABATE, acknowledging his continued support of the tournament. Ernie has been in the business a long time and is just an awesome guy to talk to. His billiard hall/bar has donated more than $80,000 to charities over the years. There had to be 8 prize tables scattered around the bar. Tables were jammed packed with electronics, had memorabilia and even a signed Bobby Orr poster. Tracey from Thud Studs and Rings also made an appearance with a nice selection of rings, chains and bracelets. Send her a note when you’re looking for vendors at your next event (spunkys6@hotmail.com). The tournament and quality of play was a huge success. Six hours after the start a winner emerged – some asshole from ABATE chapter 2. Mark I believe was his name, and his shooting partner, Jaw, walked away with $100 each and promptly donated the winnings to Childcan, as did the 2nd and 3rd place guys. Not to be out-done, the 50-50 winner kicked in her share of $730. It was a great day, great people, great food and all for a great charity. Thanks everyone - see you next year! ABATE, in case you’re wondering, is an acronym for “association of bikers for awareness, training and education”, ABATE is a riding club and not an MC. The club is open to male and female riders and all makes and models of motorcycles. This is a great opportunity for potential new members to get in on the ground floor and make a difference in your community, have a few laughs and ride like hell. That lasted for about a year and it was decided that she definitely needed something bigger and moved up to a 1996 Fatboy which she sll rides and loves it as much now as she did then!

In a convent in Ireland, the 98-year old Mother Superior lay dying. The nuns gathered around her bed trying to make her last journey comfortable. They tried giving her warm milk to drink but she refused it. One of the nuns took the glass back to the

Back at Mother Superior’s bed, they held the glass to her lips. The frail nun drank a little, then a little more and before they knew it, she had finished the whole glass down to the last drop. As her eyes brightened, the nuns thought it would be a good opportunity to have one last talk with their spiritual leader. “Mother,” the nuns asked earnestly, “Please give us some of your wisdom before you leave us.” She raised herself up in bed on one elbow, looked at them and said: “DON’T EVER SELL THAT COW!” A smile - is a sign of joy. A hug - is a sign of love. A laugh - is a sign of happiness. And a friend like me? - Well that’s just a sign of good taste!! We’ll be friends until I am senile. Then we’ll be new friends. A farmer drove to a neighbor’s farmhouse and knocked at the door. A boy, about 9, opened the door “Is your dad or mom home?” said the farmer. “No, they went to town.” “How about your brother, Howard? Is he here?” “No, he went with Mom and Dad.” The farmer stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other ,and mumbling to himself. “I know where all the tools are, if you
