THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 5

Cruising With Critter Well winter is finally releasing us from its icy grip and more and more bikes are appearing on the roads but unfortunately there have been numerous accidents involving bikes who may be rushing the season just a bit as roads are still covered with sand and crap, pavement temperature and tire compound gripping ratios do not properly jibe and motorists are not prepared to see you out there yet and for whatever the reason or cause, in clashes with cars and such, the motorcycle or its rider very rarely come out on top. While we have to educate the motoring public to be aware of motorcycles, the motorcyclists have to be extra alert to them. Largely because many of the motorists on the road with you are complete idiots and assholes and drive like they have their heads up their asses. Now that may or may not be a fair statement, as they may not be the idiots or assholes that I portray them as but seeing how they tend to do the kind of stuff that you’d expect a complete idiot or asshole would do…..so you can see my confusion. If they can pull some of the stunts that they pull in front of a fully loaded tractor trailer unit that is a hundred times their size and

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 6

weight, you and yours on a motorcycle don’t mean shit to them! Remember, they have their heads up their asses and they are probably texting at the same time. Watch out for them and always expect the unexpected. Be aware! My 50 odd years of driving trucks and other vehicles have taught me that you can’t be too careful! I too have made the mistake of assuming that there is no way that someone could possibly be so stupid as to think they could possibly make that turn now or would possibly come across five lanes of traffic to make an exit he/she should have been preparing for five miles previous but they do. I have found myself shaking my head at drivers who perform acts of complete lunacy and have overestimated the intelligence of most drivers and underestimated their stupidity which apparently knows no bounds and it has cost me on occasion but my years of experience have honed my sense of self-preservation which has saved me from real serious consequence. So far so good at least. I have myself been guilty of lapses in attention and of making some bad decisions on occasion. We all have! If anyone were to tell me that he/she has never done such a thing or made a mistake that could very well have turned out to be a nasty incident, I would call that person a liar. We are human and thus capable of error. May might officially be Motorcycle awareness month but I say safety is a year round issue and we need to be ever vigilant for not only the mistakes and errors in judgement in others but also in ourselves 24/7, and we will be launching our own “See Me!” campaign to promote awareness year round. Please watch out for the other guy! He may not be watching out for you! I have had Petoonia out for a couple of short runs but she is missing her beer box and I have been seeking out some other parts to complete the job. The trike has some more stuff to get done to be done to her but I should have her on the road soon. This is shaping up to be another very busy season with some great events in store.

Tombstones Ride Night

I managed to swing by Tom and Jerry’s Bar and Grill in beautiful downtown Richmond Hill for the first running of Tombstone Motorcycle’s Weekly Tuesday Night Ride Night

and while it was still pretty cold old a few brave souls brought out their bikes to kick off the event in grand style. I couldn’t stay long but I did get to hang in for a beer and talk to Josh and the Magnificent Magee for a while. I was on my way home from work and didn’t even have a camera with me but Josh was kind enough to send along some shots that he took. All seemed to be having a great time and I hope to be able to stay longer next time! Good luck guys! Party hearty! I’m enjoying doing the Calendar features as it is getting me all over the Province doing the photoshoots and interviewing the owners, managers and employees and getting

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 9

a true sense of what talents are involved and it is a definite advantage for a business particularly a new shop to get ultimate exposure for a relatively small cost in that they get to say exactly who and what they are. This month I travelled out to Blenheim to Dukes HarleyDavidson as they are celebrating their 10th year in business and wanted to have the Calendar feature to mark that occasion. I had never been to the shop before although I drove past it and it intrigued me as I could see it from the 401 as I sailed through in my truck. I was always tempted to stop in but schedules are what schedules are and you can’t just be stopping in to sight see whenever the urge hits you. I met

with Chris Hall whom I’d never met other than on the phone and he was an interesting guy with many stories to tell and I found him also to be very dedicated to the business as he always has one eye on the showroom and in tune to what is happening in the shop to see if someone needs help. I was prepared for it as he would politely apologize and excuse himself and then dart out to help out a customer with this or that. I fully understood that we were doing this during open hours and that business came first. On top of that it was their open house and that Heavenly Heather Ireland from Biker TV would be doing a meet and greet throughout the day and I would be doing a photoshoot with her as well. She would be doing double and triple duty as Biker TV Hostess, Calendar Girl and Poster Girl for the upcoming VON Ride all at the same time.

I’m so glad she has a sense of humour along with stunning good looks! I had her on and off various motorcycles until I had sufficient to give us some choices in pictures. Hard choices as she is extremely photogenic and there are no bad shots of her in the entire series of shots and to narrow it down can be a tough job. I know there are those of you saying Boo Hoo such a tough job looking at hundreds of pictures

THE RIDERS MAG -----PAGE 10

of a beautiful blonde lady must be absolute torture! Well it is when you have to pick out specific shots for a feature. It is just hard to pick out just one when they all look great. I could run them all and ask you to pick out your favourite or better yet for you to have a black marker in your hand and pick the ones to be permanently blacked out and I’ll bet you would be hard pressed to pick them and maybe then you would understand the challenge. Chris gave me the Grand tour of the store and introduced

me to the staff and crew and came away really impressed. We will have a good representation of our crew at The Fort Erie Swap Meet on May 3rd so if you are heading there stop by and say hi! Keep an eye on the What’s Shakin’ pages for what is happening in the Bike Community and from the number of listings in this month’s pages its going to be a busy summer. See you out there………..

My guess is you forgot about the Speed trap down on Maple St., Again.

Whatever we quoted on this Super-fast Bike isn’t going to cover the cost of the test run !

Alvinston Swap Meet 2015

Well after a little over 5 weeks of real winter and the coldest February on record in most areas March came in like a lamb. This was welcome news for the 11th Annual Alvinston Motorcycle Swap meet. That’s right for many on the southwestern end of the province they feel this Swap meet marks the first sign of spring. Over the 11 short years since this meet started we have seen years with many people riding in on their motorcycles and we have seen years where the snowplows were out in full force just hours before the vendors were to start moving in. This year was cold and clear and everyone was itching to get out and shake some cabin fever.

Vendor spots were once again all booked up for a full house weeks before and although a couple vendors had bad luck making the meet all tables were full with a little extra shuffling. Shawn made the trip and probably took the long distance award this year to promote the Fort Erie Swap meet this coming May. Iggy with Power Cycle made the trip up from Windsor once again which amongst other items he brings if you are looking for a Clymer service manual he most likely has your bike model with him on swap meet day. Booze fighters, Heaven Saints, Horsemen, 81 Windsor, and Sarnia-Lambton Bikers Rights Organization were all

on hand selling members parts, promoting their respective groups, events, websites, and gear. Talisman Leather from London and Kirk Lindsay from Cambridge rounded out our leather vendors this year bringing more of the Canadian handmade quality leather products out for the participants as opposed to the imported flea market leathers that seems to be filling all the big shows as of late. Several individuals cleaned out their garages to give you selections too numerous to mention which was offset by some of the bigger corporate vendors. We even had Sharon with Yunique Make Up and Silver Jewelry there to give the la-

dies something more than just bike parts to look at. SOS Motorcycles / Amsoil Oil who have been with us from the first year help round off our more corporate vendors. MidWest distributors from Starthroy came in this year to sell some of their more stock take offs which was a nice change; you never know what shops like that will bring to the table. This brings me to the last but not least vendors. Who between the 2 of them with their trailers full from floor to roof really do personify a collection of parts from yesterday to today. Some years I feel if Fred Jennings and Red’s Custom Cycles in Sarnia don’t have it between their two displays it probably doesn’t exist. This year was no

exception walking around Fred’s booth I really have to keep my hands in my pockets. His collections of parts really does make a person think “need it, want it, not sure what I am going to do with it but I just got to buy it.” This really made it worse when I was walking by Red’s Custom Cycles Booth. Red has announced the shop is For Sale. He is retiring and he was out to liquidate his collection of new and used stock. For those of you who know Red he has been around for many years and owned a few motorcycle shops in several cities including London and Clinton. A few years ago Red and Linda became victims of the Godrich tornado when the car wash they were seeking shelter in while passing by on their motorcycle fell on top of them. Let’s just say Red is a tough old bird, he has survived that along with business ups and downs thru Harley’s AMF years and such,

so there is no doubt he has earned his retirement. If you saw a part at the swap meet and didn’t pick it up from his booth, stop by his shop there is still time. That is unless someone comes thru the door and hands Red a big pile of cash in exchange for the business and then you will just have to buy that part from them.

All in all another successful year and a big Thank You from Kathey and myself to all the vendors and participants who have helped us to help you put on a successful swap meet.

Look forward to seeing you again in 2016 for the 12th Annual. First Sunday of March which will be March 6, 2016. Book early. Ken MacDonald ontariochildridingbelt@yahoo.ca

Spring Motorcycle Show 2015

Wow! Now that was a show! I figured that this would be a busy event as everyone is just sick to death of the winter, with record cold temperatures, that just seemed to refuse to go away and we were all ready for a diversion of the motorcycle kind and with the unfortunate demise of The National Show this was the last big show for this year. It surpassed my expectations. Everyone seemed to share the same sentiment and were all saying the same thing “I can’t wait to get out on the Bike!”

B.A.K ORIGINAL MOBILE MEMORIALS The Original Handlebar Mounted Compact Creamation Urn www.originalmobilememorials.com For us, it was especially busy as the newest edition of the Mag had just come from the printer on Thursday and we were still dealing with distribution, billing and so on that keeps us pretty occupied and now with the show it was a little overwhelming as we are not blessed with a large crew to make things happen. Friday morning bright and early, we once again borrowed my buddy Buff ’s trailer loaded up the trike from Bronson’s where the beast had been getting some things done to her over the winter. Not everything had been finished yet, but enough so that she could come to the Show. Managing Editor, Al and I headed down to do our part of the setup which included the Mags, the trike, bar, banners,

and carpeting that usually make up our display but this year Beau was coming down from Ottawa and bringing parts of the rig he uses when he does at the Ottawa show in an attempt to make us look really spiffy. I knew there would be canopies and lighting and he said he had some other surprises for us. So we did what we could and left Beau and Chucky room to do what they had to do when they got to town. The place was busy beyond belief but we got our stuff in place and I got all the necessary passes for our crew but in the bedlam, forgot all about registering the trike for judging, (A fact that wouldn’t occur to me until heading home on Saturday night.) so I knew that the trike wouldn’t be bringing home any prizes this time around. Beau and his loyal Brother/sidekick/wheelman/wingman/ bodyguard/setup man and all round good guy, Chuckay were going to roll into town later in the day and while we would have loved to have been there to help them with their stuff, Al and I still had tons of stuff to get done before we could call it a day and went about the task of doing it.

It was late by the time we got to settle in for the night which was going to be far too short. Saturday morning found us heading back down where we would meet for breakfast with the bulk of our crew before continuing on to the show. Our crew has grown substantially with Beau and Chuckay in from Ottawa, our new Northern Guy, Guy (Gee) and his lovely lady Madlyn down from Sudbury our own (Chuckay in Training) whirlwind, do everything guy Scott who PARTS, ACCESSORIES, AND INSTALLATION has been such a tremendous help to us at these events since I took over The Mag along with a new, welcome addition to our merry band, Tanya the Terrific, who’s radiant smile and personality lit up the booth and she proved to be a valuable asset and was a perfect fit with all the others. Senior and Bob as well as the Ravishing redhead Sherri WE CAN KEEP YOU Bad O’Irish, would be joining us later at the show. Kaz, RIDING ALL YEAR Magic Mike and Manon couldn’t make it and Sticker Chick was on assignment up in Collingwood so ROUND! we weren’t the whole crew but close to it. WE’RE HERE ALL YEAR The finishing touches that Beau and Chucky STOP IN AND SAY HI had done to the booth really did the trick and the CUSTOM WORKS booth looked great so he has me sold on making the changes permanent and we will get a better rig MTO Certified Shop own. 7 MAIN STREET EAST SELKIRK ONT. down and departure was the rule of the day and this was a lot more work but the end result and the impression that you create about the Mag is paramount and it gives us a more dynamic look and feel. Damn! Beau had even brought funky little torches with realistic looking flames just to give us a little more flare! We heard that the crowds were already lined up at the entrances long before the show was to open and the search for parking spots was already a huge challenge and the later that you arrived was relative to how far you had to walk. The place was absolutely packed from the moment the gates opened and remained that way for most of the day and getting around the different Halls would require some time

and maneuvering. With the size and enthusiasm levels of our crew and their capability it allowed me to wander the show with my camera and get things that needed to be done accomplished and having the writers from different areas of the Province also there to add their perspectives in their own individual write-ups and should give a good overview of the show. The show itself is making many welcome changes and improving the experience for attendees and vendors alike. It seems like the same old same old is something that they are serious about changing and it is our job to tell our readers if, in our minds, they were successful and if it is worth the trip for people to come from their respective areas to take it all in. From my perspective, I’d say yes and that the organizers are on the right track. I was able to get by and visit with most of our advertisers although they were all extremely busy throughout the show. Tim and Tina from Triple K Upholstery were busy as usual and Rod Barber had his line incredible Wizard cleaning and polishing products there and was getting a lot of attention. New this year was the Swap Meet portion and it was well received by attendees and those like Art from A&K Recreation and Rocco from Authentic Cycle who came out with large crews and huge arrays of used parts. They offered up bargains and good value to many who didn’t realize that this was part of the show. It is getting back to the roots of what these shows were all about. Many expressed the opinion that The Swap Meet portion could have been better promoted but they were still pleased.

Gord from Black Gold and his large crew were swamped and we exchanged waves as I squeezed by the crowds that had converged on his large booth where he had some great deals on an extensive selection of knives, clothing and other items. The Hale family from Strictly V Twin in Pefferlaw was also consistently busy and the same held true for all like Tim the Bike Lawyer, and John, Cassandra and crew from Motorcycle Enhancements along with the Amazing and ever popular Panda. Also making the trip in from London was Phil and beautiful daughter Krystle and their fine crew

from PD Restoration and they felt that it was well worth the trip. Nothing makes a vendor or anyone with a product, service, ride or whatever to promote or display happier than large crowds and the show certainly brought them out this time. Master promoter, Shawn McCooey from The Fort Erie Swap Meet that will take place on May 3rd this year was doing what he does best with some pretty wild and wacky ideas that do get attention at his booth. If it was motorcycle related, there was something for ev-

eryone at this show no matter what your main focus was. Motorcycle clubs and organizations, racing for young and old, be it dirt track, dirt bike or dragster type, vintage bikes, new bikes, sport bikes, touring bikes, used bikes, they were there! There were airbrush artists, builders, custom builders and enough pretty ladies to capture a young man’s or an old man’s attention. If you wanted to find out about training, there were large numbers of motorcycle training schools represented. There were products that ranged from helmets, leathers and boots, to lights, sound systems, ear plugs, clothing to

down other roads if you were already satisfied with who and what you were and the course that your life was on. It was hard to cover everything and I’m sure that I didn’t see absolutely everything, but I tried. Maneuvering the crowds easier for me this year as I was no longer impeded by injuries or surgery and didn’t require crutches or canes or other paraphernalia to get around. Kim Coates, a fine Canadian Actor and one of the stars of the extremely popular television show, “Sons of Anarchy” was holding Court by the beer garden where they had set him up with a booth containing one of Jacox HarleyDavidson’s motorcycles to sign autographs and such, and he was a huge draw with lineups starting long before his arrival and then remained constant throughout the entire run of the Show. He seems to be a very likeable guy and he couldn’t have been more magnanimous and friendly, going out of his way to give the fans what they came for and more. I’d met him briefly once before at one of Clare’s H-D’s events and he was the same. Some celebrities who get hired to do gigs like this be they actors or sports figures sometimes show up but it is clear from the start that they obviously think they are above it all and look like they would rather be anywhere but there and seem to loathe the people who come out to see them and are probably cursing their publicity agent for putting them through this Hell. Kim on the other hand seems to enjoy every moment and was smiling constantly, posing for selfies and going out of his

way to make people happy. The lovely Colleen, the Queen of public relations for the show asked me to get some shots and cleared a spot and a time for me to accomplish it. It was refreshing to meet a celebrity who isn’t too full of himself to have a good time and enjoy his celebrity and the good fortune that comes with it and actually realizes that the fans need to be treated with respect. He is an accomplished actor playing many roles in many productions over the years and staring with other notable actors like Kevin Costner in Water World before landing the role in SOA that has brought him to the forefront. His appearance probably was responsible for much of the record crowds that had all the vendors and the Show itself benefiting from it. This is what shows need, an attraction that will draw people in and make it an experience rather than just another motorcycle show. The Spring Motorcycle Show recognized this and went with it. I wandered into the Jacox Harley-Davidson booth and found the lovely Julie Martin there and managed to talk to her and president Klaus for a while. It was their first involvement with this show and were very pleased with the turnout and proud to be a sponsor. My favourite bar tender was once again on duty in the beer garden without his lovely assistant this time as she was unavailable but it is always nice to see a consistent smiling face at the show. The 2nd Annual Eddy Awards were presented again this year and I was again honoured with the opportunity to recommend a group that I felt made a difference to the Motorcycling Community and deserved the recognition. This year I chose The Chrome Divas for all the fine charity work and the awareness campaigns that they do and have done over the years for different causes but most

recently “Prostrate Cancer” awareness. They partnered with CIBC to produce some great looking calendars and MarchadF2C.pdf 4:27 PMpresence at all these shows with have been1 a3/12/15 constant great looking booths and truly genuine participation. You

do make a difference! Thanks for all you do. Thanks to The Spring Motorcycle Show for recognizing the need to acknowledge these groups. The day sailed by and before I realized it was time for us to wander off for home. The next morning we hooked up the trailer and headed on down, once again, meeting for breakfast to prepare for what was to be another incredibly busy day. We had lost

some of our crew as Guy and Madeleine had headed back to the North Country and Senior and Bad Bob and Sherry wouldn’t be able to make it in but we would still be large and in charge and once again were able to get ‘r done! When we arrived back at our booth we realized that we were almost out of Mags which was pretty astonishing to us considering that we had gone through around 3800 Mags in less than two days and we weren’t forcing them on people but rather many people sought us out for their copy which is a testament as to the popularity of The Mag. Thanks for all your great comments and observations on the recent changes that we have made. Sunday is my day to wander before the show opens and get uncluttered pictures of the many great show bikes and displays before the crowds start to roll in. It also gives me a great opportunity to talk to the many vendors and other participants at the Show and get their impressions of the show and overwhelming response was positive. They don’t mind paying to be at the shows as long as the show can bring the crowds out and The Show seems to have fulfilled their part of the bargain. The day was a blur and before I knew it was time for the awards presentations and then we were packing up to head for home. Thanks to all my crew for all your help and thanks to Beau and Chuckay for your contribution to our booth.

BIG AL’S SWAP MEET 2015

I headed out early for Big Al’s Annual Swap Meet in Dundas, at least by my standards most of the vendors had likely been on the go since daybreak and the guys running the event also getting the tables set out and the vendors moving their wares in for what is usually one of the busiest swap meets of the season and a popular events for riders looking for parts for bikes new and old. I found Senior and Bad Bob in the lobby working on the mags as I had expected and Jimmy and Brian part of the organizing club were collecting money and stamping hands like

they have been doing for as many years now as the mag has been goin, and the swap meet room was its usual traffic jam. After hanging out for a bit with the guys out front and saying hellos to friends entering the building I entered the melee inside. It’s always best to go with the flow as the crowd is so thick that I have learned over the years that it doesn’t pay to try to go somewhere specific just go with the flow of the crowd and see what can be seen in this event. Over the years many vendors have come and gone and frankly since I retired a few years ago I am out of the loop with who is and isn’t advertising in the mag and I can say that I did not recognize all the vendors in the event. You can always be sure that if your lookin for a bike part it can be found at this event but arrive early is the best advice I can give as looking for the one of a kind thing grab it when you see it cause there could be another rider lookin for that same part. I ran into Glen formerly of Big Boar Cycles on hwy 2 near Brantford. He’s been working on a big ass bike for himself and I have been lookin forward to featuring it but too date it’s still not there yet. He did say that he had it out for a ride but it definitely had a few bugs yet to be worked out, I am lookin forward to this. Kath from the Alvinston Swap Meet was on hand with her sons promoting husband Kens upcoming Alvinston Swap Meet along with other events within their purview in the Sarnia Lambton area. I do believe their event happened back in March and I know that Ken was off on a work trip leaving his better half at home to take care of promotion of the event. Continuing following the flow of the mob inside the swap meet I finally navigated my way over to my good friend Sean from the Fort Erie swap meet or at least the latest and also former proprietor of the event which went from him to Bob Very back in the 90’s back to Sean then to his brother in law Moe and finally back to Sean. He had an accident with a snow plow and took a hit to the head and has been having some problems with his memory but he says that his adult son has been taking an interest in the event and he seemed quite excited about the prospect of working with him I can’t remember a year that this event was not a madhouse, well attended and I know that when I have had the chance to talk with the vendors there was always a lot of very happy vendors as there was always a good bunch of buyers on hand so whether you are a buyer or a seller check this event out if ya need to unload stuff of if you need that one piece to get your ride ready to go for the spring this is a great event in the Hamilton area. It’s always advertised in the mag so watch for the ad and the events calendar listing, check it out you will not be disappointed.

Fighting for Your Rights The 4th Ontario Confederation of Clubs annual conference went off without a hitch. Delegates from all over Ontario gathered to soakup some valuable practical knowledge shared by our diverse guest speakers. Topics this year were focused on motorcycle safety and political action. The speakers, who were Over 30 Years of experts, revealed insight rarely experienced by outsiders. Winning Cases. Delegates also enjoyed an afternoon bull session whereby various topics were tabled and discussed. The sessions were initiated following a introduction by Maxx from Predators M.C. which resulted in some positive input from Free Consultation various members which could No Fees Unless be adapted to further the I Recover Money OCC mandate – stay tuned. The entire event was hosted For You by the Phantom Thunder M.C. who, for the past two years, has rendered outstanding assistance on every level - which laid the foundation for an enjoyable and seamless venue. A huge ‘OCC slap-on-the-patch’ to Lightening Steve and all his PTMC brothers for providing our delegates with another memorable weekend of Western Hospitality. You be Aces! Yes Ollie, as usual, the misguided London Constabulary and the omnipresent OPP were on scene all weekend conducting surveillance. In frustration, they jacked some delegates on Sunday as members departed the hotel following the conference. For the most part, it was information gathering but our secretary, Cookie Chick, did receive a B.S. summons for tinted windows which will be challenged in court. Lame, desperate & a total waste of taxpayers’ dollar. Eh, Ollie? By the time you read this, I will be in Denver attending the 30th Anniversary of the Annual NCOM Convention. The National Coalition of Motorcyclists is a huge USA biker advocacy which, in part, is responsible for introducing and organizing the many Confederation of Clubs spread throughout the states. NCOM is also the endorsed persistence responsible for spearheading many of the legal milestones achieved in championing bikers’ rights in the USA. Numerous successful NCOM campaigns have resulted in either new laws enacted or old laws rewritten or repealed. It’s been many moons since a representative from Canada has attended and I will be spending my four days in a constant quest to build relationships and gather important knowledge. This annual event is attended by a smorgasbord of delegates ranging from representatives of every major USA motorcycle club and biker organization to Senators and Congressmen; quite possibly I may achieve an insight that would aid our confederation in achieving our intended goals?

the OPP have landed on a “mutually convenient” date that she will not reveal.” Mmmm, it appears that the Monarchy is alive & well in Ontario. The message for us lesser members of serfdom – don’t try this at home! May is Motorcycle Awareness month. While reminding bikers to be aware of motorcycles is an oxymoron, nevertheless it is a good safety practice to be cognizant of the many distracted and stressed ‘cagers on a mission’ which populate the pavement. Spring is the most dangerous time due to the many months that motorcycles have been absent from Ontario traffic patterns. The carnage over the Easter weekend (one biker killed and five motorcycle accidents on Good Friday) underlines the need for extreme caution. The OCC executive requests that all riders practice basic vehicle checks before you ride. Also, become expert in the handling nuances specific to your machine. Practice away from the traffic lanes – use a parking lot after hours and encourage your riding buddies to take part. Although this will put a dent in some of your precious free riding time, think of it as an investment in survival. The time spent here could save you and yours from avoidable pain or suffering. Thurst T’s Cycle Spring Bash by Sticker Chick

On the first day of Spring I drove my not very cool soccer Mom mini-van to Collingwood to attend Thirst T’s Cycle’s Spring Bash. The event was held at the Historic Gayety Theatre in Collingwood to raise money for Wounded Warriors Foundation of Canada. What a fantastic cause! What a fantastic venue! What a fantastic entertainment lineup! The Gayety Theatre itself is an old Collingwood Theatre, so old in fact that there are tunnels in the basement that were rumored to be used by the underground railway. The concession gals told me stories of the family that owned and operated the theatre for many years and lived upstairs. Legend has it that Joe and Rose along with Sam still roam the old theatre . . . cool story right? The gals went on to tell me that nobody can get “past” a certain area in the basement June 6th 2015 tunnels due to a “force” that keeps them back. I’m not much of a believer, but I do enjoy a good story! Then the plant fell over, yet the closest person was a foot away . . . it does happen right? During my wandering I met another lady who watched movies at the Gayety when the infamous Sam et al operated the theatre. This gal was very familiar with the ghost stories and didn’t seem to view them as just rumours. She told me they would not start the movie until everyone was absolutely stone quiet, not until you could hear a pin drop! At the after party I learned that this lady is Sandra Cooper, the Mayor of Collingwood, a ghost story teller? Then about 15 minutes later I was back chatting with the concession gals and one of the doorway curtains fell down . . . could it be that the crowd was not “quiet” enough? And what’s going on with those funny circles in my early pictures of the theatre prior to the show??? Definitely a very interesting venue, family business since 1984 great choice by Thurst-T’s! Before the doors were open I ran into “Stoney SPECIALIZING IN Curtis” from Count 77 at the bar, a very down to earth USED MOTORCYCLES guy. So down to earth I didn’t even realize he was part of the band at first, or that I was at the bar! I’ll never make it as a real paparazzi! We took some pictures with the girls, he seemed to smile a little wider when I told the girls to “snuggle in”, we may have helped prime him for the show! And what a show it was! But first, it’s important to remember the cause, the reason for the event. All All Makes & Models proceeds from this event Over 60 Bikes in Stock Financing Available went to Wounded Warriors of Join us on Facebook at Canada. We were all reminded AM Used Motorcycle, Car And Truck Sales of the reality of war and the where you can see the latest arrivals reason we were there with a presentation before the 73 Alness St. Unit 5 Downsview, ON music which included a short 1.888.770.4096 416.663.3382 war scenario and a marching bagpipe band.

is presented to individuals that assist and support the troops! As Paul said, “you don’t have to support the war but you do have to support our troops!” Thurst-T’s Cycle of Collingwood continuously supports the troops in many of their endeavors. Then it was time for the Count 77 Band with Danny Kroker. Stoney was amazing on guitar, Danny sung til his voice cracked, the bass guitarist was the happiest musician in the world, the rythym guitarist had a blast, and the drummer’s smile was never ending. The pictures tell the story! There’s a special picture in there for the gals, that butt belong to none other than Danny Koker of Counting Cars and Count 77 band, hope our fearless publisher prints that one! Teehee!!! The Count 77 Band guys rocked the house with some classic rock as well as some tunes from their new album, and this is going to be a great album! I have a new favorite love song from the night, it’s called “Save a Little Something for Me” by Count 77. Never heard it before but wow, my eyes were watering by the end of that one! Life on the road is tough and it seemed that this song was directly from the heart, Danny’s voice cracked a few extra times. After we all wiped our eyes and regained our tough biker image, it was time for the After Party! This was a great opportunity to meet and chat with some of the people I had seen at the show. The Mayor attended the After Party and even posed for a picture, It was nice to chat with a politician about something other than politics. Paul received a thundering applause when he finally got to the restaurant, obviously everyone was very appreciative of all the hard work and thought put into making this event a success, and fun! Did I mention how much fun it was?. The final numbers show an attendance of over 350 and $2000 raised for Wounded Warriors of Canada. Can’t wait to join in on more of Thurst T’s events including the “NO CELL RUN: coming up in August 2015. Thank you Paul, Trish, Wendy, and the Thirst-T’s Girls for making me feel so much at home! What a hospitable bunch!!!’

Flat Promoting Flat Track race events is similar to the racing itself. Anyone can do the normal twisting of the throttle and ride around in circles or you can be the ambitious daring type which ride wide open looking to change the game. I’m one of those guys that aren’t worried about getting a sore wrist; I take a handful of throttle, and keep her pinned. Along the way you bounce into rider or two, you clip a couple of straw bales but it’s all about moving forward. We’re about to enter our third season of the Flat Track Canada Championship Series. Since the start I’ve been very aggressive, trying to build relationships and find the winning formula for creating great motorcycle races. It’s like anything in life, at first the passion fuels you, it then becomes depressing that you’re going in circles and all the energy that you’ve put in isn’t making you any faster, but in this case, progressing the sport. So your ambition and intuition outweigh the odds and you tend to persevere until something happens. At some point, it just takes a spark to keep going, in this case for me it was the deal we made with Parts Canada. That partnership was extremely helpful in the

course of our vision. It’s now 2015 and entering our third season. Fortunately some of this ground breaking work is starting to pay off. We’re starting to get more corporate support which allows us to grow and expand the series. For instance this year we will be building a track in Walton and be a part of the Walton TransCan, Canada’s largest motorcycle racing event! It also allows us to upgrade our equipment to look a little bit more professional. This year we will be able to purchase a transponder system and tools used for safety. Whatever we can do to reinvest in the sport to help make it better it’ll naturally increase the experience not only for the riders but the spectators as well. So back to work for me and we hope to see you guys at our grand opening event, The Paris Half Mile Saturday May16th 3pm at the Paris Fairgrounds 139 Silver St. So until next time, keep er’ pinned...

Job at the FBI The FBI had an opening for an assassin. After all the background checks, interviews and testing were done, there were 3 finalists; two men and a woman. For the final test, the FBI agents took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun. ‘We must know that you will follow your Instructions no matter what the circumstances.Inside the room you will find your wife sitting in a chair .... Kill her!!’ The man said, ‘You can’t be serious. I could Never shoot my wife.’ The agent said, ‘Then you’re not the right man for this job. Take your wife and go home.’ The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room. All was quiet for about 5 minutes. The man came out with tears in his eyes and said ‘I tried, But I can’t kill my wife.’ The agent said, ‘You don’t have what it takes. Take your wife and go home.’ Finally, it was the woman’s turn. She was given the same instructions, to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the room. Shots were heard, one after another. They heard screaming, crashing, banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all was quiet. The door opened slowly and there stood the woman, wiping the sweat from her brow. ‘This gun is loaded with blanks’ she said. ‘I had to kill him with the chair! “What do you think you’re doing?” asks the wife. “They’re on sale, only $10 for 24 cans” he replies. “Put them back, we can’t afford them” demands the wife, and they carry on shopping. A few aisles farther on, the woman picks up a $20 jar of face cream and puts it in the basket. “What do you think you’re doing?” asks the husband. “It’s my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,” replies

the wife. Her husband retorts: “So does 24 cans of Budweiser and it’s half the price.” That’s him on Aisle 5. A small boy named Hameed lived in a village in Morocco. None of his classmates liked him because of his stupidity, especially his teacher, who was always yelling at him “You are driving me crazy Hameed!!!!!” One day Hameed’s mother came into school to check on how he was doing. The teacher told his mother honestly, that her son is simply a disaster, getting very low marks and even she had never seen such a dumb boy in her entire teaching career!!!! The mother was shocked at the feedback and withdrew her son from the school & even moved to another town!!!!! 25 years later, the teacher was diagnosed with an incurable cardio disease! All the doctors strongly advised her to have an open heart operation, which only one surgeon could perform. Left with no other options, the teacher decided to have the operation, which was successful. When she opened her eyes after the surgery she saw a handsome doctor smiling down at her! She wanted to thank him, but could not talk. Her face started to turn blue, she raised her hand, trying to tell him something but eventually died! The doctor was shocked and was trying to work out what went wrong, when he turned around he saw our friend Hameed, working as a cleaner in the clinic, who had unplugged the oxygen equipment to connect his Hoover!!!!! ...don’t tell me you thought that Hameed became a fucking doctor !?!

A man and a woman were having a quiet, romantic dinner in a fine restaurant. They were gazing lovingly at each other and holding hands. The waitress, taking another order at a table a few steps away, suddenly noticed the woman slowly sliding down her chair and under the table - but the man stared straight ahead. The waitress watched as the woman slid all the way down her chair and out of sight under the table. Still, the man stared straight ahead. The waitress, thinking this behavior a bit risqué and worried that it might offend other diners, went over to the table and, tactfully, began by saying to the man: “Pardon me, sir, but I think your wife just slid under the table.” The man calmly looked up at her and said: “No, she didn’t. She just walked in.”

After filing their personal tax returns by April 30th, many Canadians will again receive a tax refund. This is indeed a very exciting program, and I’ll explain it in a Q & A format: Q. What is a tax refund payment? A. It’s money that the federal government will send to taxpayers. Q. Where will the government get this money? A. From taxpayers. Q. So the government is giving me back my own money? A. Only a smidgen of it. Q. What is the purpose of this payment? A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy. Q. But isn’t that stimulating the economy of China? A. Shut up. Below are some helpful tips on how to best help the Canadian economy by spending your tax refund wisely: * If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China or Sri Lanka. * If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to the Arabs. * If you purchase a computer , it will go to India, Taiwan or China. * If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala * If you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan or Korea. * If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to Taiwan.

SHOP/BUILDER OF THE MONTH

Duke’s Harley-Davidson Ten Years and Counting

The magnificent looking building with the bold Harley Davidson signage is a welcome sight and a beacon for Harley riders. But it also serves as a landmark to all who are travelling that tedious stretch of the 401 highway between Windsor and London. It is home to Duke’s Harley Davidson. Duke’s Harley-Davidson was born in May 2005 and General Manager Chris Hall, who at that time was part of the sales team, has fond recollections of hooking up the trailer loading some motorcycles and

heading to Port Dover for Friday 13th where he handed out thousands of flyers heralding the new addition to the Harley-Davidson family. Ten years has flown by but in that time the fine crew has proven that they are more than worthy of the Harley-Davidson pedigree, in fact, they exemplify it. They have proven it through strong sales, (winning Gold on Harley-Davidson’s Highway of Champions), great service and becoming part

of the community. Not just the Harley-Davidson community or the motorcycling community in that area but the community as a whole. Duke’s provides the great, knowledgeable, fast, reliable service that Harley riders expect from Harley-Davidson dealers but take it to the next level with personalization and attention to detail and they have earned the trust of the riders. They have assembled a small but extremely efficient crew who take tremendous pride in their work and their place in the Harley-Davidson World and it is clear that they wear the logo with honour and honour

the logo. It is more than just a place to work or a job to these folks, it is satisfaction. They have earned a reputation and the trust of HarleyDavidson riders in the area and know that that isn’t an easy task and take nothing for granted. The philosophy is; you can’t rest on your laurels, you have to prove yourself with every job you do, everyday! While they realize that given their market area they will not be among the biggest

dealers they know that they can be among the best, and they prove it! You can sense the pride and passion as soon as you roll into the well landscaped property with the fantastic pond and when you walk through the doors into the comfortable, inviting showroom that seems to be more than just a place to display motorcycles and merchandise. It has a relaxed, welcom-

ing feel to it that is sometimes absent in some stores and it is hard to identify exactly what gives it that feel. As with some people who have charisma and you can’t put your finger on exactly what it is that you like about them but you just do. It is the same with some businesses, and this place has it. From owner Rob Meyers, the very enthusiastic and extremely innovative, General Manager, Chris Hall, to Tech and Service Manager Josh, and the other Tech, and aptly named “Big Rich” to Richard and Brent in parts, to Dave the accountant and the rest of the sales crew you are in good hands here. They all seem to try a little harder and are willing to try and take service and customer satisfaction to the next level. The shop area is bright and clean as you would expect at a Harley Davidson dealer and customer satisfaction is key. They get a lot of performance upgrade work and of-

fer great deals on storage/ service packages that are very popular as evident from the packed storage area. They do a lot within the community supporting local charities such as “The VON”, and “The Ronald McDonald House”, “Paw Pet Animal Rescue” and the do a weekly ride through the local Hog Chapter that welcomes riders of all types of bikes to participate. They have done the same

in combining the very popular and well publicized and attended, Annual VON Ride that they do in conjunction with Biker TV with their 10th Anniversary Celebration on May 30, 2015. If you are going through the area and need a break from that monotonous stretch of highway known as the 401 (Bore oh one) or if you just want to check out a great shop run by some great people stop by. You can’t miss it! It is a landmark! You’ll be glad you did.

Shenanigans

with Sherri O’Irish

LIKE A ROLLING STONE Now that spring has sprung, and the weather is co-operating, we can finally shake off the winter blues and get ready for fun in the sun. With the wind on our faces, knees in the breeze, the gleam of chrome in our eyes, and the thunder of pipes in our ears, we ride, ready for new adventures just waiting on the horizon. If you haven’t already planned some trips over the winter, now is the time to start, even if it’s just a rough outline of after work, day or weekend trips, getaways or vacations, you will always have a list to choose from. Setting a mileage goal, can be a great start to where and how far you go, a lot of short trips add up, but the longer ones pack the punch. If you didn’t get out as much as you wanted last year, set your goal to do maybe twice as much. If you travelled half-

way to Timbuktu and back, you may just want to match those numbers. Any way you slice it, it’s still the riding that matters. Frequent short trips to meet up for coffee, to friend’s houses, parks, beaches, date night dinners, basically any short term ride, is the filler or pea gravel of mileage. Day trips of any distance such as charity or scenic rides, where you may leave in the morning and come back later in the day or night, are like the screening gravel. Weekend getaways, rally rides and camping trips of any significant distance, where there’s almost as much time on the bike as off, is the pavement to cover the rocky road smooth. Now by the time you get to vacation rides, which usually involve riding a thousand miles or more, maybe to different provinces or countries, you’ve built up and rolled out a roadway of experience, experiences, and an odometer reading to truly be proud of. More and more places are including motorcycling in their tourism advertising, some with mapped out destination routes and others with must see and do locations. Milwaukee Crippler:

I will go through the technical stuff first. After that, the article will get more interesting.

Kick Start

The Sportster 1957 to 1979 XL, XLCH, XLH, XLS kick starter or Starter Crank (33061-52A, 33060-77) sits on the right end or the Crankshaft, Starter (33094-57A. 33094-77A).

1. The starter crankshaft fits through and is supported by the transmission right side Sprocket Cover (34872--57A, 34871-67B, 34872-70, 34871-71, 34872-71, 34872-73, 34896-75, 34850-77, 34869-79, 34888-79). The cover changes in appearance but not function over the years. 2. The kick starter return spring known in Harleyese as the Spring, Starter Crank (3308441) sits on the starter crankshaft between the kick start arm (starter crank) and the sprocket cover. It rotates with the kick starter arm when kicked by the rider. When rotated, the spring compresses (tightens). When the kicker arm is released by the rider’s foot, the spring returns the kick arm to its upright position. 3. The kick starter spring has a square center that sits on and mates with the squared end of the starter crank shaft. The outside end of the spring has a tang that hooks onto the Starter Spring Stud (33088-52, 33088-71, 33088-79), which screws into the sprocket cover. Therefore, when the spring compresses, it has the leverage

The starter crankshaft travels through the sprocket cover, skirts the transmission rear chain sprocket, then goes across behind the transmission casing and through the right side engine case to just behind the Clutch Sprocket Assembly (3770157, 37702-57, 37700-67, 37701-70, 37701-71A, 3771671A, 37717-79) commonly known as the outer clutch shell. The starter crank gear sits just behind the clutch shell. Its purpose is to direct engagement and disengagement of the two kick starter gears. More on this in a bit. The starter gear stop, that is part of the starter crank gear rests against the internal engine case. This holds the kick arm in its upright position. When the kicker is rotated by the rider’s foot, the starter crank gear is free to turn but when the rider lets go of the kick arm, the starter crank gear will be forced back by the compressed kick starter spring until the cam-gear-stop

BEST BEEF IN HAMILTON prevents further rotation. 5. There is a Cam Plate (33359-57) attached to the starter crank gear. It has an outcropping that separates the two kick starter gears and prevents them from meshing when at rest (kick arm up). 6. When the kick arm is kicked down by the rider’s foot, the starter crank gear and its attached cam plate also rotates. This action frees the kick gears to mesh. Their toothed side faces are pushed together by the Starter Clutch Spring (33390-52). Now, the kick arm downward motion engages the kicker to the engaged clutch pack, which spins the motor via the connecting primary chain and engine sprocket. The ignition must be turned on for the spark plug to ignite the incoming air/gas mixture. 7. The Starter Clutch (33379-57, 33379-71A) is a kick starter gear that the manual appropriately calls a ratchet with side face, angled teeth. It looks like a flat plate with the angled

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 36

teeth on its outward facing side face. The starter clutch is riveted to the back of the clutch shell. 8. Its mating gear, when allowed by the starter crank gear’s cam plate is called the Starter Ratchet Gear (33432-57, 3343273). It floats on a smooth Clutch Sprocket Spacer (1957-70 XL, XLCH; 1958-66 XLH, 37754-74, 1.047” long x 1.3715” Outer Diameter: 1967-up XLH, 37753-76: 1971-79 XLCH; 1979 XLS, 37755-73, 1.153” long x 1.3715” OD). The clutch sprocket spacer sits over the transmission clutch (4th) gear’s extension into the primary chaincase. The clutch pack sits on and is supported by the end of the clutch gear extension. The starter ratchet gear and its center bushing (33442-57, 3344273) rides on the clutch sprocket spacer between the clutch hub shell and the transmission Trap Door. 9. Thus, the rotational force exerted by the rider kicking the kick start arm on the right side engine sprocket cover transfers to the the left side of the motorcycle primary chaincase, and then to the front engine sprocket, to spin the engine’s flywheel assembly. 10. The rotating flywheels activates the valve train opening and closing intake and exhaust valves. 11. The suction generated by the downward piston Intake Stroke with the intake valve open draws in air and gas into the combustion chamber. 12. With ignition key ON, ignition times to piston and stroke location. Ignition sparking the plug occurs in the latter stages of the Compression Stroke. By the time the engine’s Power Stroke is beginning, full ignition occurs creating heat, which expands, driving the piston down to power the bike forward. Present day, the Sportster is virtually vibration free, dependable, comfortable, and geared correctly for highway speed and/or touring. It was not always so. The opposite was the rule of the day with the 1957 to 1979 Ironhead XL, XLC, XLCH kick start only machines. These bikes became known as the Milwaukee Crippler for meting out pain and disfigurement. The condition became known, wide-and-far as Sportster Knee. Others are supremely proud and keep kicking their beloved XL or CH Sportsters…..with the other leg….for they have learned how to avoid a doubling disabling. You may see them standing beside their bike facing to the front. Holding the handlebars, they search for the Compression Stroke gently pushing down with their left leg as the steady themselves on their bad right leg. When the gentle but authoritative pushes indicate the easier intake engine stroke is suddenly and firmly rebuffed by the advent of the Compression Stroke, it is time to propel the body up. Still grasping the handlebars, the veteran kicker, uses the resisting kick pedal to help the upward motion of the rest of his body. This is necessary to get all rider weight above the kicker. The kick veterans use bodyweight and muscle to propel the kicker around-and-down. The effort is forceful and masterly. For the kicking leg must be boss. Showing fear through hesitation will result in the kick gears nefariously slipping. Lacking determination to finish this job properly, once started, will indicate weakness to the kick gears. They will delightfully use left over compression to snap back, with disastrous results, for he who shows fear. The novice must understand. These inanimate gears are really a primitive life form that senses fear or indecision. The slipping gears will instinctively cripple their prey. The gears need to be taken care of and treated with respect or they get very cranky. Yes, indeed. Take them for granted and they will lie in wait for the opportunity to slip suddenly which will uncontrollably extend the leg past 90 degrees, at and against the knee joint. Conversely, they might suddenly kick back with the help of their old pal Compression. This folds your knee, albeit in the right direction but so fast that it

strains the tendons and ligaments. Tired or cocky? Well, that’s when the gears turn the show over to Compression to strut his stuff. The contest begins as Compression tries to throw the hapless rider over the handlebars. How far in Harleydom’s game of shot put is the only question. Let the gear teeth of the Starter Clutch and Starter Ratchet Gear round from inattention or not replace that Starter Ratchet Gear bushing as she wears beyond tolerance and the Sportster rider is about to be taught a painful lesson.

Kick Start Tutorial

1. Launching the kick depends on weight, technique and confidence level. The height of the bike is important to me. 2. The bike will be on its side stand. I turn the front end away towards the side stand. 3. A tall confident rider can stand over and straddle some bikes, leaving the bike on the side stand or holding it up straight while kick starting. 4. I stand on the ground with my left leg to the back while I kick over the bike with my right. 5. If this is awkward as with an Ironhead XL that sits high, I’ll hop up onto the kicker with my right foot and use all my weight, letting my left leg act as a balancer as I plunge through the half circle. 6. Others feel comfortable, kneeling on the seat with their right knee and kicking down with their left. 7. Those with an injured right leg afflicted with Sportster knee, kick down with their left using the right to balance in the air. The old kick start Ironhead Sportsters are notorious for slipping kick starter mechanisms that may snap the knee overly straight at the bottom of the kick. 8. The important factor is to follow the kick all the way through. The rider must stay in control. The kicker doesn’t stop on its internal pin until past the 90-degree mark. This is the mistake most make. They stop when the kicker is perpendicular to the ground or worse before. Follow through past this point about another 100 or 150 towards the front of the bike. 9. Do this and there will be no compression to snap the knee back or throw you over the bars. If the gears slip, do the same. Follow all the way down and through until your leg is extended out and locked and you will be fine. Of course, when this happens, it is time to do the necessary repairs to thwart the Beast from injuring your knee. 10. If the kick start gears slip as they will when worn, do the same; follow the kick all the way down and through until the leg is extended out and locked and you will be fine. Of course if kick gear slipping occurs, it is time to do the necessary repairs to prevent future injury to the knee. 11. When the bike begins to fire, it may start and purr under its own volition or a feathering of the throttle may be required. Many times a hot bike on a hot day will need no further

encouragement. A cold bike on a cool day will probably need some throttle encouragement. Experimentation is necessary. However, sensitivity that develops over time makes kick starting an easy process. The Big Twin had a more engaging kickstart. It was tame. It might slip when badly worn or kick back occasionally in a lackadaisical way. The Sportster has a small man complex, out to prove his virility at every opportunity.

Do Not Rotate Throttle while Kicking

Be careful not to accidentally rotate the throttle while kicking, as it will flood the engine. Most riders rest their hand on the throttle while kicking. As the rider’s body travels down with the kicker arm, it is a natural tendency to rotate the throttle. It takes practice not to move the throttle while kicking the engine over. I set the throttle to a position I choose for starting a particular bike. Some bike’s require leaving the throttle closed, some need a crack but most need about 1/16” to ⅛’ open position. If smelling gas the engine is flooded.

Cold Starting

Cold starting requires more gas than an engine that has

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 37

already been running. The same holds true if the outside ambient temperature is cool or cold. Cold requires more gas relative to air. Hot needs less gas relative to air.

Kick Start Experimentation

Experimentation is usually necessary to determine a starting procedure. The goal is to find the right combination of starting factors to make the bike a one kicker. It is no fun kicking your brains out for fifteen minutes. The one kick Harley makes starting easy as well as making the rider look cool. Fool around until the right combination works. Once determining the formula stick with it.

The Cause: Cranky Gears

Get this! There are multiple little teeth that unauthoritatively stick out on the Starter Ratchet Gear’s side face. These mesh with the same number of small teeth on the mating kick starter ratchet plate riveted to the back of the clutch hub. When not kicking, the starter crank gear cam plate, (33359-57), holds the starter clutch gear away from the ratchet plate. The starter crank gear bushing, (33442-57, 33442-73), rides on a fit to length steel bushing spacer. I mention this because it is a very necessary ongoing repair required. If the cam plate on the gear becomes dinged with indents or bent to any degree it needs to be replaced or it will become the architect of kick starter problems by allowing the ratchet gears to engage or partially engage when not supposed to. The precursor to this is a worn starter ratchet gear bushing. It allows the gear to shift a little sideways instead of directly forward. There is not much room for wear when there is minimal gear mesh separation when disengaged. Clutch hub bearings also play a lesser but still vital role especially on the 1957 to 1970 models. There are two thin needle bearings (37722-52 x 2) that once worn allow the clutch hub to vary slightly from its intended place. Remember the kick start plate is riveted to the back.

It is very important to maintain these parts in new condition to make an imperfect kick system work at its best… which is often not good enough. The 1971 and up clutch hub bearing is a big ball bearing (37722-71) that is resistant to sideplay.

The Symptom: Clicking Ratchety Noise

When the engine is running and the kick arm is in its straight up stopped position, if hearing clicking, ratchety noise will let the rider know to repair the kick start sooner rather than later. The noise is caused by the teeth on on the Starter Clutch making partial contact with the teeth on theStarter Ratchet Gear. Once the gear teeth are worn the starter clutch plate and the starter ratchet gear must be replaced. The potential causes are: 1. Worn starter ratchet gear bushing. This is the likely cause. 2. The 1957 to 1970 clutch shell bearings (37722-52 x 2), if badly worn will allow the clutch sprocket assembly that I call the clutch shell to shift sideways a little to allow unauthorized partial engagement. 3. Loose starter (crank) shaft nut on the primary side. This will allow the starter crank gear to shift on the starter crankshaft. 4. Excessive starter crankshaft endplay. This also allows the starter crank gear to shift. 5. Loose starter crank gear cam plate. This is unlikely in my experience but would cause the problem. 6. Damaged starter clutch spring. This is also unlikely in my experience but would cause the problem. 7. The starter ratchet gear binding on its clutch sprocket spacer. Unlikely again but would cause the problem.

Sportster Kick Start Parts Chart

I was going to include Ironhead in the title but is unnecessary since Sportster engine cases will not accept a Kick start after 1980.

The Starter Clutch is riveted to the back of the clutch hub. It’s teeth engages with the mating teeth on the Starter Clutch Gear. 2 The Spring, Starter Clutch applies pressure on the Starter Clutch Gear to engage with the Starter Clutch, when directed by the Stater Crank Gear cam plate. 3 The Stater Crank Gear is affixed on one end of the Starter Crank Shaft. The kick arm sits on the other end of the Starter Crank Shaft. When the kicker arm rotates with a rider’s kick, it also rotates the Starter Crank Gear cam plate, which allows the Starter Clutch Gear to engage with the Starter Clutch. This will turn the engine over and allow the spark to ignite the fuel mixture to start the bike. 1

She switched her hockey technique from skates to a sledge and with a few modification to her V-star and the addition of a sidecar for balance, she rides her bike around “like a real champ” says her dad that is fully supportive as well as a rider himself. She has managed to convert the foot controls of her bike into hand controls for shifting but is struggling to adapt a braking system that would engage the rear and front brakes simultaneously. Along with all the other life challenges that she faces on an everyday basis, Jessie remains one of the most positive attitude people I have ever met and for this, I would like to help this young lady by calling out to all you motorcycle enthusiasts out there. If there is something you could do either monetary donation or better yet, help out to restore her bike to make it safer, I challenge you to speak up and be heard. Whether it’s the installation of hand controls to restoration of her sidecar, to a nice coat of paint to attract attention to her cause, let’s hear from you. You can contact her directly at jessiegregory84@yahoo. ca or visit her website at http:// www.jessiegregory84.wix.com/ jessiegregory or even better yet, get a hold of myself and I’ll coordinate the whole thing. I would really like to get her bike up to par and safe. Those of us who deal with disability all know how much more expensive life gets. Together, pitching in a little can make a big difference. In the recent month, we have started securing ride dates for such events as Bull Industries motorcycle run, in Sudbury on July 11th, Ride Manitoulin, Manitoulin Island on July 17th, 18th, and 19th and more to come. If you are in Northern Ontario and want your ride covered in the Mag, contact me asap to get it added in the “What’s Shakin’” column of the Mag, as well as on my event calendar. It’s going to be a busy season full of rides and cheers!!! I don’t believe that I’m better than anybody, but I do believe that I’ll try harder than most and I hope that people just join me for a bit of a ride!

Hello fellow inmates...

Ok so last month we all bitched about the weather and figured it was soon to get warmer, well I noted Easter weekend the snow was falling in Pickering ,As I write this it’s April 9 and a balmy +2 in the pouring rain, on the upside it’s washing the salt and sand off the roads. Many riders will not get out on the road till that salt is gone, the new stuff they put on the highways (liquid brine?) is really corrosive, ask any trucker, their trailer chassis are rusting out twice as fast, compared the sanders throwing out the old rock salt . No doubt when you read this it will be warmer and many of you have already put lots of miles on. Over the last 30 days we really didn’t do much, a visit to the Iron Dragons house, who had quite a crowd there. Old friends and new friends, lots of food and drink. thanks for the hospitality. A Friday drop in to Downtown’s open nite. The boys have some rides lined up for the club, but I promised I would mention a few charity rides. We note the MC’s that year after year put on events with proceeds going to worthy causes, very generous and admirable. Hats off to you that walk the walk (reminds me to make sure I get out to Christmas in July put on by the Aces and Eights) Anyhow I would like to promote a charity ride, and this one is Ride for Lupus May 30th. I suspect a lot of you Mag readers have met the force behind this event, Miss Jenn Ephgrave, about 100lbs of sheer energy, a friend to many in the community, and committed to make this ride a success (note her advert in this issue for details). The little lady with the big heart puts a lot time and effort into this event, so give it shot. Oh jeez, another no show for me was the Long Horns Anniversary Party, but it appears there were 200 other hooligans that did make it. The Long Horns MC have made a lot of friends in the community; they can always be counted on to support other MC’s events. The party was a huge success, no wonder, they had two roast pigs, 100’s of BBQ chickens, live band, big time prizes (flat screen tv’s etc.). The event was held at the Cdn Legion in Port Credit (right next to the river) a good place to throw a bash. On another note they could change the name of their club to the Long “Riders” MC, these guys ride 1000’s and 1000’s of Km’s a year, going all over N/America, in any freaking weather. Not many of us out there have way over 100K on the clock of late model HD, like these guys do. They live

by the credo…”No Bar too Far” Speaking of riding, my 06 geezer fired up nicely this season, with 75k on the speedo, motor is still stock stock. I got a call from my old (older) riding buddy Howard S, he has just a few years on me but I estimate he has over 500,000 miles of riding on his clock. Out of the blue he says let’s do Sturgis for the 75th. I have my 60th rally Shirt in the closet, shite that last 15 years just blew by me! I can make the time, I can scrape the cash needed together, the question in

my mind is will my 9 year old decker make it there and back? I am not thrilled about dumping some hard earned money into it. Those that know me sometimes refer to me as the Cheap Bastige. I guess my Scottish DNA is evident when it comes to using my short arms and deep pockets. Sure I would love brand new Ultra to travel on (and if someone wants me to break in their new bike I am all for it) it can be a hard ride thru all kinds temps, N Dakota on the flats in the middle of the summer can feel like the Sahara. So perhaps it’s a good idea to wheel my ride down to Motor City Custom in the Schwa for Bill and Ron’s expert opinion, before I think about Sturgis. Here’s a plug for Bikes on Bond, a free event August 8th (rain date Aug 9th) they are shutting down the main streets for cages. The event is free, a good place for day ride to hang out. Well here it is, time to shut up and send this to Critter and Al, having just met the deadline again. Procrastinate? Yes I do, never going to change. We’ll see you on the road here and there… ride safely friends.

This month’s feature guy is Sully and most of you from the Niagara area know or at least have heard of Sully, he’s been ridin for over 50 years now and says that it’s in his blood. Sully is originally from upstate NY and says he took up riding as a teenager starting out on a BSA. Many of his pals were riding Harleys and he wanted one too but he didn’t have a lot of money so he says he went down to a scrap yard on Transit road in the Buffalo area and bought his first Harley. It was a 1947 Knuckle in rough shape as he described it laughing he said that the motor was partially disassembled and it had weeds growing out of the barrels. It was his first Harley and he says that he spent a couple years cleaning it up and collecting all the parts to get that

THE RIDERS MAG ---- PAGE 42

bike up and running and when he did his hands became restless and they wanted to work on Harleys and he has been riding them ever since. He took me on a quick tour of his garage showing me pictures of various bikes that he had owned over the years pointing out pictures of a couple different knuckles and shovels and at least one panhead and they all had pretty much the same theme, big ass front ends, mostly girders and apes, no tourers, just chopper style bikes. Dan spent his life working as a construction labourer and when he had spare time he rode and when it was winter time he wrenched on his rides saying that was his way of life until his retirement at 55. I met Sully at the first every Lincoln county Motorcycle club ride in show and shine when they

had the house along the highway and he was a member at that time. He has had so many bikes that I cannot say with exact certainty what he was riding at the time but one thing was sure it was real nice cause Sully really cares about his rides and they are always sharp and he was on a quest to build the perfect bike. He has built many over the years I have known him and I can say with absolute certainty that his credit card bike which was a custom softail chopper was on my feature list and when we tried to arrange the feature shoot on the bike he had sold it. After that bike he built himself a nice rigid bike and he says that it was one of the sharpest that he had but that he took that bike from his home in Niagara and rode it to Port Dover for a Friday the 13th and says that when he got back from the ride he spent an entire week in bed recovering from that ride. He decided that the rigid bike style was not for him so he decided to tear it down and sell the chassis keeping the driveline for a future project. He needed something with suspension so he bought himself a Road King and I do recall seeing it at one of the B.R.O. Niagara Cover the Kids rides and I recall that it had one of his trademark outrageous paint jobs on it by Dennis. Sully said that he really loved that road king but he was having problems with his knees but he didn’t want to give up riding. Most of his buddies that he rode with back in the day were either dead or had given up riding, some suffered that insidious affliction, cancer.

Sully was at a crossroads he wanted to ride but he was having trouble with his knees and as he really started to feel his age Dennis suggested that they build a trike. Sully thought that was just the thing that he needed and he says that he took a lot of bullshit from the few people he talked to, saying that he was gonna build a trike and the response was you won’t look good on a trike, you won’t like it, etc. Sully says hey I’m not building some boxy stock trike I am building a hot rod chopper style trike like all the other rides I have had over the years. I ran into Sully and Dennis a couple times during the build hearing tales of hours of moulding work blending tig welded brake line onto tin fenders and sanding till there was no skin left on his finger tips and reports of how gorgeous it was gonna be from a variety of folks who had seen the work in progress, I have to admit it all sounded quite impressive. I saw the bike for the first time on another B.R.O. cover the kids ride down the Niagara parkway either 2012 or the year after. I know it did not have rear fenders on it as the bike was a ground up build and remained a work in progress for nearly 4 years while sully rode it. Sully has been riding Sturgis for over 30 years and says that he has had the trike there 4 years in a row and he finally got the fenders on and just right in 2014 and decided

to put the trike in a local trike only show restricted to motorcycle engines only. He pulled up and registration directed him towards a purple trike and he said yeah right see ya later. The trike was a $150K monument and Sully says his trike is a budget bike but they talked him into staying and he is pretty damn proud of his 3rd place in that show loaded with big bucks trikes. Saying that the trike was a work in progress is a bit of an understatement as though Sully like to work with his hands and Dennis and his son had built a number of bikes over the years they had never built a trike and there were certain challenges with the geometry and some trial and error amongst other things just trying to figure things out. The frame and rear end were ordered, the front end came out of Sully’s garage, the rear fenders from princess auto as regular trailer fenders which were sectioned and widened by a friend of Dennis’ called “Madman”. The original primary was an open belt primary, Sully couldn’t stand the noise and went to the traditional factory primary. The original design had foot shift with hand clutch but Sully’s arthritis required changing to foot clutch and hand shift. He says that his first few rides the front end jumped around all over the place, they got some adjustable trees from A.L. Chopper in Hamilton and put a stabilizer on the forks and Sully says that solved that problem but it bounced like crazy, he pulled into a used car lot and the guy says how much pressure you got in them tires, Sully says 36 lbs, they say drop it to 7lbs, perfect, Sully says that it is the perfect ride now and he loves it, although he can’t say it will be his last as he needs to keep his hands busy, and all those guys who told Sully he’d look stupid on a trike, they all wanna know how to build one as cool as his

Cataclysmic. And so it begins…..another round of fight it to the death with the Wynn government. I was enjoying my time off from writing about all the bad legislation being brought into the legislature. Time for a war cry from ALL DRIVERS. So mark down April 28, 2015 in your books. This is the deadline for getting your response/input into the Attorney General of Ontario’s office for the A.M.P.S. proposal. at your story and decide if you should pay that fine or a lower one perhaps). The issuing officer does not have to present any evidence or anything ever. It’s all about you. So, they decide you shouldn’t pay the fine, that’s great, however, it is an Administrative Penalty so the penalty stays on your record and any demerit points can not be disputed (just the fine can be disputed). Example: I am driving down the road and the police car behind me pulls me over walks up and says saw you driving and you didn’t have a seatbelt on. So I am giving you an administrative fine (usually $240.00) for failure to wear a seatbelt plus 2 demerit points. Whether you did it or not is irrelevant. You are guilty and the officer does not have to prove anything. Quick refresher: for full G or M drivers: 6 demerit points warning letter 9 demerit points review hearing 15 demerit points is a 30 day suspension. This means that your insurance will go up. This is a cash grab by the province to get more badly needed funds and this is a quick and easy way to do it. More people will get more penalties and their licence will be at risk because you can’t fight it. The paralegal will be out of business. They can not represent you for these penalties. So you ask “Wait a minute I have a RIGHT to a defence”. Sure if it wasn’t an administrative penalty. It now becomes a minor municipal matter now and under the AMPS it is not an infringement of your rights. This has gone through in BC and further changes are being implemented there. Here is an article which better explains what is to come. http://www.vancouversun.com/touch/story.html?id=10953200 A fantastic review of this proposal is at the link below. It is the view of the paralegal association. http://www.advocatedaily.com/areas-of-law/amps-will-mean-awatering-down-of-the-legal-system.html The Law Commission of Ontario also has published its review of the proposed changes that can be read here: http://www.lco-cdo.org/en/provincial-offences-interim-reportsectionV#.VPYV2ZBUN31.FACEBOOK It’s a little long but it does help to point out the many different positive and negative aspects of this system. The Ontario Trucking Association is going crazy over this right now. This has a huge potential to hurt so many people and put so may jobs at risk. Your CVOR will reflect every last minor little ticket you get and the Trucking Company will not be able to cover the insurance for anyone. Some of these businesses will go under or leave Ontario leaving many drivers out of work because they won’t be able to be insured. This will cascade into the everyday life of everyone in Ontario. Prices will go up on everything as an end result. The O.T.A. had a meeting recently to discuss these possible changes. Below is a list of their concerns: Highlights of the meeting, according to the OTA, include: • Based on how an AMPs system functions, the legal and carrier community would not support any penalties, outside of municipal parking tickets moving to an AMPS system. Even in regards to municipal parking tickets, carriers had a number of conditions that would need to be met before they would accept an AMPs municipal parking system. • Carriers and legal community reps in attendance believed that the movement to an AMPS system is an affront to the fundamental principles of natural justice and the right to be presumed innocent before proven guilty. • The movement to an AMPS system could potentially lead to reduced accountability of the enforcement community. • An AMPS system will eliminate discretionary powers and personal interaction between carriers and the enforcement community. This interaction is essential to the improvement of highway safety through education. Here is a link to their page: http://m.todaystrucking.com/trucking-industry-responds-to-

ontario-court-changes I am including a few links to better help you formalise your thoughts and concerns as well as a link and hard address to send your concerns to: Links for Attorney General’s Office: http://www.attorneygeneral.jus.gov.on.ca/english/ poa_consultation.asp to input to this A.M.P. proposal: poa-amp.feedback@ontario.ca or in writing to: POA-AMP Consultation Ministry of the Attorney General 720 Bay Street, 11th Floor Toronto, Ontario M7A 2S9 Link for an online petition: www.wejustwin.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/ AMPS-Petition.pdf So in review, if you are a visible minority on the roadway and subject to police pull overs, you are in trouble my friend. Too many tickets you will loose your insurance. Driving with no insurance gives you really big tickets, possible incarceration, lose of job/income, possible lose of home, lose of family. You are spiraling down into the toilet. You are being denied your access to justice. Too much power with no safe guards in the wrong hands is no solution to a finical fix. The potential for disaster is insurmountable. Please take a few minutes and read through the write-ups I have provided. Be educated and aware. If this were a good piece of legislation they would have been spouting off about it for months now. Not quietly trying to get through in committee. Hope this helps you some. I just don’t want to look back in the rear view mirror and think hey I could have stopped this from happening. Ride safe everyone. J Katherine MacDonald

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 45

On The

Ok as soon as this mag comes out I am on the road doing what I do, feature shoots. We used to make this our standard weekend because it was between bike shows and after the may mag came out so it was always an available weekend in a schedule that went nonstop from the bike shows at the beginning of the year through the outdoor events into the fall. After 7 years we finally took some time off cutting the publication back to 10 issues a year from 12 back in 2006. I denote this bit of history because now that I am in fact retired I still cling to these dates although it’s no longer a scheduling thing with production, deadlines, deliveries and the like followed up by a ride with B.R.O. Niagara covering the kids and the world famous or at least Ontario wide fame of the Fort Erie swap meet in friendly Ridgeway Ontario. Old habits die hard right? 17 years of mag history, retired for 2 and a half now and still hanging onto that old routine. So I like shooting the shit, meeting new people, writing their stories checking out their rides it was always something I enjoyed and the fact of the matter is me and my wife J.B. have done every single feature shoot and lady shoot since the beginning of time with one small exception when we had to ask Critter to do a lady shoot and write the article at an event due to scheduling problems. When he took over the mag he seemed relieved that part of the agenda was that I kept this little responsibility, it was the part of the work that I liked and he likes to focus on other things and I think we can all agree that his ideas have made the mag better in many ways and added more dimensions to it and probably expanded readership and advertisership. Sorry I’ll try not to ramble too much the point was feature shoots, so 3rd issue of volume 17, first 7 volumes had 12 issues so that works out to 187 mags since we started. Which means 187 feature bikes in the mag, and what has been consistent about every feature shoot that has ever appeared in this fine publication without fail? A lady, every single feature bike in every single mag has had a lady on the bike. It’s just

Road

with J.R.

the way it is, and oh yeah it’s always a Harley or a derivative of , like a special construction, home built, and we also accept the Indian motorcycle in both original form or either of newer incarnations. Ok, so back to the point, guys, we are always looking for bikes for the mag, you know they need to be American vtwin motorcycles, primarily Harley. We have broken them down into categories. We started with 4 back in the day and when special construction became a thing we added that category coincidental to changing the format to 10 issues. So when I ask for men’s sportsters, stock evo or twin cam, shovel, vintage, or special construction, I mean with a lady sitting on the bike. It’s the way it’s always been and probably the way it will always be. If you want your ride in the mag get a lady on your bike. If your wife or girlfriend is to shy, stuck up or whatever get your buddies old lady to do it, your niece, daughter, hire a stripper from the nudie bar whatever, but she’s gotta be age of majority (19 at least at time of shoot) ok? It’s like dottin the i’s and crossin the t’s is all. Ladies I have not forgotten about you, no you can’t get on the cover with your bike again cause that’s the way it is but we did provide a space for all of youse five times a year the only stipulation is that you have to own and ride a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The point of the lady feature was too not be biased and to pay tribute to the number of ladies who have got out there and started riding now forming riding clubs holding events and raising cash for charities, pretty impressive stuff. All I ask beyond that is that when we come to do your shoot that you dress the way you ride please. Ladies that are modeling for feature wear what you are comfortable in and relating to the weather. See you out there on the road.

Well Folks! While it seemed sometimes like it would never appear Spring has finally arrived and with winters end I attended the last indoor show of the season for many Ontario riders, The International Spring Motorcycle Show. This year Chuck and I headed down to the Toronto show to help out our fellow Riders Mag members man the booth and hand out copies of the Mag to the public and answer any questions our readers might want to ask. We also attend shows like this one so that groups that are thinking about starting a ride or event of their own can approach us and ask us for any advice or help we might be able to give them in order to get started. For the Mag family the other reality is once the riding season is underway the opportunity for any of us to see each other is pretty well off the table until late next fall. One of the simple pleasures on that weekend was being able to have breakfast in a little hole in the wall diner just across from the International Center with many of the Mag crew because

thing that may have encouraged some of the people to get out to the show was the sad news that the National Spring Motorcycle & Tattoo Show that has always taken place at the CNE grounds for 33 years has finally come to an end. That is especially sad for me because I started doing that show from year one and back in the early 80’s. We used to travel down to do the show with a whole entourage of good people we rode with and they would all pitch in and help with doing the show although in all fairness it did seem like Bette and all the ladies spent most of their time watching the booths while the boys wandered around admiring all the bikes on display and buying parts. They were great times and back then we used to book a wing in this one old motel out on Kingston Rd. When the show would end for the night we

we are a family that seldom has the opportunity to actually sit together and those moments are to be enjoyed and are usually filled with laughter. When the show’s doors were finally opened the people streamed in and in no time the aisles were jammed with people. That pace was pretty well the tempo for the rest of the day until around supper time. Another

little while I realized I would have to pace myself and visit one hall at a time or I would be burned out in no time. One noticeable change in not only the Toronto show but also in the Ottawa show this year are the growing number of out of province bike builders and motorcycle related businesses that are taking part in our shows and I am pleased to see that because I have always felt it is interesting to see what the other guy is up to. In the case of this show one of those builders and fabricators is a shop called Speed Trix and at the show’s end they just about cleaned up in many of the categories as far as awards go. There are still many riders here in Eastern Ontario region that don’t know that Speed Trix is situated about an hour and a half drive east of Ottawa, about an half hours drive east of the town of Hawkesbury. I look forward to taking a trip up to their shop in the near future to get a better look and get to know them a bit better. Besides there are some great biking roads up in that area of eastern Ontario so keep that thought in mind if you are wondering where to take a ride to this summer. As in all big shows there are a large number of booths supporting various rides that are dedicated to some cause special to some folks hearts and one group I have been talking to over the last few years are the folks from a group called The Blue Tie Ride. This is a ride in support of prostate cancer cure and awareness, while there are other rides for the same cause, reality is many communities just aren’t able to participate in the larger national rides, nor do they have large corporations to sponsor them, but the causes like this one are just as important to them. I had a good time chatting with the volunteers who manned the booth and in particular Dolly Betancourt. I get the feeling that folks and rides like this one could help groups of riders in smaller communities that don’t have the opportunity to participate in the larger more national

rides, and to form their own community rides/fundraisers so that their town can get that feeling they can make a difference too!. Hey! It’s the biker way so if you or your group would like to do something that makes you feel like you are helping to make things better then don’t be afraid to reach out to other rides and ask for assistance in creating your own. One real plus about being at the show for the whole weekend was hooking up with old friends and scoundrels such as Krazy Doug, who devotes much of his time these days organizing and promoting Bikefest up in Bobcaygeon, in the Kawartha Lakes area which is not that far from Peterborough. Doug told me that last year they had over 14,000 motorcycles that came up to take part in his event and while it is hard to divide my time between events I am going to do my damndest to try get there and take part in Bikefest this year. If you are not familiar with this part of Ontario you should consider taking a weekend trip there, you will not be disappointed because the roads and the people are worth the effort. In my travels around the show I came across the Iron Sirens who are women who ride. They also take the time to promote other women to make the choice to take up motorcycle riding. I suspect that women riding motorcycles is likely the fastest growing market out there, who knows perhaps one day we will see a chapter of the Iron Sirens in the eastern Ontario region and I look forward to it. Another display that had me h a n g i n g around for longer than I should have was the Dog Guides

Foundation of Canada. Petting and meeting the dogs they brought with them and any of you who know me are certainly aware that service dogs are an important part of my life. The

Celtic Brotherhood will be spending a large part of this upcoming season with their “Busted Bucket Challenge” and during those occasions we will be promoting the important part that service dogs play in the quality of life for many dealing with Dyno Machine Shop people traumatic brain injury, Welding Flowbench ptsd (post traumatic Performance Parts stress disorder) and also Precision Rebuilds for many people living autism. Aside all COME SEE OUR with that, when I get a chance NEW LOCATION to hang out with a dog NOW OPEN! I am a happy man. We 7174 Bank Street, all had a fun time doing Metcalfe, ON K0A 2P0 the show and Brother blew everyone’s (613) 821-9090 Chuckay mind by not only handing Tim & Peri out about 3000 copies of www.bamachine.ca the Mag on his own but for his tireless energy in chatting and answering the questions tossed at him by people attending the show. On top of that I am pretty sure he bought a freaking raffle ticket for every contest that was part of the show because he always likes to show his support for any good charity that supports the biker community. Once we were back in our own territory we had to start getting ready for any events we are taking part in and of course right of the top that would include the Capital City Bikers Church Swap Meet happening on May 2nd. For those of you who have not been to this event it is time

to fix that. Over the years this event has been the unofficial signal that Spring has come in the Ottawa area. All day Saturday the Bikers Church and surrounding area will be crowded with riders from all over eastern Ontario. Don’t miss it. Some other events that I am trying to get to in May will be the 2nd Annual Burn Out Boys BBQ and on May 24th it’s a double header for me because I start my day by heading out to Casselman to participate in their 4th Annual Dice Run for the Air Cadets (last year the turnout was awesome and we had a great time) and then I have to head back into Ottawa and get ready for the Denny’s 6th Annual Spring Classic Bike –Car – Truck Show hosted by The Celtic Brotherhood. Hopefully it will be the first official appearance of “The Busted Bucket Challenge” where the Brotherhood will ask area riders to take the BB Challenge and learn for themselves how concussion or head injury can affect your ability to drive. At the same time showing others how important it is to get medical help should you sustain a head injury. At this time TCB is putting together a calendar

of venues where they will be performing the BBC for the people and taking the opportunity to make the public more aware and understanding of TBI (traumatic brain injury) which affects about 500,000 people in Ontario. That’s only afflicted the people, not including all their families, friends and neighbors so try and make it if you can and help Denny’s and TCB make a difference in brain injury awareness. Another event that I would really like everyone to put on their riding calendar is the 2nd Annual Moncion’s Ride for Her, in support of awareness and finding a cure for ovarian cancer. The TCB and The Rider’s Mag are working hard to encourage not only women who ride to take part, but even more so we want men to come out and show their support because for years women both as riders or passengers have been there to support prostate cancer awareness and cure. It’s time for men to return the kindness. We all have wives, mothers, daughters. I

would also like to bring to everyone’s attention that Marcel & Linda Moncion, aside from being riders themselves are owners of Moncion’s Independent Grocers on River Rd., just by the new Strandherd Bridge, and they are also the folks responsible for making possible the Merrickville Bike Show held on June 28th of this year(Another event well worth attending). A couple of things I would like to mention are that May is Motorcycle Awareness Month in the Province of Ontario, that was originally started in Ottawa by a group called S.O.A.R. (Society of Ottawa Area Riders) who convinced the City of Ottawa to declare May as Motorcycle Awareness Month. Our thanks go out to all the different groups and individuals who contributed to bringing this about and proudly include both The Riders Mag and TCB. Both of whom sat on the board and it is our hope that communities across Ontario will make a special effort to remind car and truck drivers to not only share the road but be more aware of motorcycle riders, and Riders to be aware of the failings in wisdom of the car/ truck drivers and help save lives ! Secondly, I always try to get out and support and attend as many events and rides as I can each month. If you would like me to come to your event and perhaps cover it, please don’t take too long to contact me because my calendar fills up fast and I need to set up my schedule early ! As always I want to remind you that if you are involved with an event/ride or a business that deals with either motorcycles or their riders, you might like to advertise or carry “The Riders Mag” Please contact me either by email or phone. Email: theridersmag.beau@gmail.com You can also follow me on twitter as well but please keep in mind I am a newbie and it will be a while before I master it. Ladies and their Harleys

This month’s feature lady is Laurel and if you are a fan of the mag you may remember Laurel on the front cover of the mag last year on her husband’s shovel. Well this beautiful Heritage Springer is all Laurels and is about her 7th bike and according to the story Laurel has actually been riding longer than Ray and also her older brother who instigated the first bike she ever purchased in her teenage years. As it turned out Laurels older brother’s best friend had a Harley and all her brother wanted was a bike of his own but he was married and his wife didn’t like the idea of him having a bike so in an effort to get a chance to ride he convinced his little teenage sister to buy a bike, despite the objections of their parents at age 19 Laurel was the proud owner of a

THE RIDERS MAG ----- PAGE 52

Honda 350. Her brother did get to take it out for a couple of rides and avoided getting into dutch with his wife since he contributed no money had no ownership stake or anything and Laurel says that she did not know how much she would like riding until she got that first bike way back when. Laurel says that she owned bikes for her entire life having a variety of metric models including a 500 Suzuki, a 650 Honda, and finally a Yamaha virago 1000. She says she was riding when she met her husband to be Ray who was a lifelong Harley rider who had a real thing for the older shovel heads but Laurels family had been more inclined towards the metric bikes shunning the “trouble heads” as they had a reputation for being unreliable back in the day and she said that because of that

she never really had any interest in owning a bike that wasn’t metric because she loved to ride and loved the reliability. She says that despite her lifelong career of riding motorcycles she has never really been on a long ride or an overly long trip saying that she rides her bikes daily and loves to ride all year around weather permitting but does not like riding the 4 series highways and is not that fond of riding at night either. A while after getting married Laurel and Ray were blessed with fraternal twins, girls and she says that Ray had sold his bike in an effort to raise some cash to renovate a room for their newly arrived children and that when the girls were about 2 years old he told her that he had also sold her virago without letting her know. I know someone else like that but that’s a whole other story. To say that Laurel was unhappy with Ray for selling her bike was probably a wee bit of an understatement but what was done was done and I suspect in his mind if he had to sell his beloved Harley it didn’t seem fair to have that big old yammy sittin in the garage collecting dust so he sold it and used the money for things that the kids needed. Well as the years went by the kids grew up Ray got that familiar itch that all of us who sold our rides back in the day

when we had our first or last kids gets, its time, the kids growin up and I have sacrificed enough I need to get back on the road feel the wind on my face, bugs in my teeth, you know how that all goes but since he sold her bike he knew it was gonna be a problem getting a bike without getting her another one too so the search began. It seems that Ray knows all the right people out his was which is east of Toronto where he lives and he knew he had to hook Laurel up but he wanted another bike like the ones of his youth or at least his past. Knowing he didn’t want something knew he called Wes and asked who might be sellin something old in the area and he hooked him up with a Frenchman who was sellin a pan. Ray wanted something old but not something that was gonna need a ton of work and when he went to check out the pan he found that this guy had a good runnin shovel and he was able to separate him from the shovel for the right dollars despite his lack of desire to part with that bike. Well pressure was on to find a bike for Laurel, he put the word out and finally found her an 800 Kawasaki motorcycle and she approved of the bike and they bought it. She rode that bike for a couple of years before finally telling him that she really hated the thing and wanted him to get rid of it and get her something that was more like her beloved Yamaha virago v-twin.

Laurel ended up with this gorgeous 1997 Heritage Springer, Ray found this bike on line from a seller in the Haldimand County area whose father had owned the bike and was really into bolt on accessories, Ray says the price was right and got better when he arrived and the owner declined to let him take a test ride on the bike but he was satisfied with the bike, all it needed was a rear tire. Laurel says that despite her initial and historic lack of enthusiasm for the Harley-Davidson breed she says that she is thrilled to own this bike says it has just the right quantity of accessories on it and that she wouldn’t change a thing from how it is right now. She is absolutely in love with this bike and at the time that we shot her bike those twin girls were borrowing one of mom and dad’s cars with friends and Laurel was just finishing her first summer of riding her Heritage Springer. She is glad to be rid of that kawi that she was not too fond of and is glad to have a bike that she loves to ride to work every day and also take grocery shopping and all the other errands that she may have around town and that is how she likes to ride. Laurel has no ambitions for a really long ride as she does not care for the 4 series highways and likes to ride no more than 4 or 5 hours a day so a ride to Florida would be really long at that pace, but she’s happy and that’s the best story of all.

TRUSTING IN GODS ABILITY TO PROVIDE If we look at the news channels you may see story of financial trouble; but does it have to be that way. A few weeks ago we seem to be sinking a little further down in the hole, money was getting tighter, my lawn cutting business required some work to the equipment, needed another weed eater, had to replace the trailer to provide the service I demand for my customers. The bike needed parts and a oil change; IT IS NOW RUNNING.We decided to attain some breathing room. Everything went through and the bank was waiting on one form to return. A form called “ a Kastopal” that would allow them to attain our home if we screwed up and did not pay. Weeks passed and then we found out the trailer park we were living in had gone and formed a corporation. They were no longer allowing any company to come in and claim property. We are screwed, can no longer attain a mortgage and as we called many other companies have followed. Paul said in Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. He shows it doesn’t matter how great the need is He will provide, I can trust him to meet our needs. God wants to show the world that he indeed is a covenant-keeping God and that he is able to cause you to rise above everything that attempts to hold you back or keep you down. He doesn’t want you limited in any way! Psalm 145:16 Thou openest thine hand, and satisfies the desire of every living thing. That proves he is interested in every detail of our lives It was Wednesday night and God had not given me

anything tonight. An envelope on my Desk that I had not opened from a good friend had enclosed encouraging words. It seems so easy to get all messed up and forget that special truth. Many times God has helped me to defeat problems. I want to live a victorious life, I want you to live a victorious life, and God desires you to live a victorious life. Strange as this seems this letter was not just sent to Pastor Dave, but Pastor Dave and the Bikers. I ask God to use this letter to grow our faith and experience all the blessings he has for us. Psalm 34:8 O taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man that trusteth in Him. Do you truly trust Him to cause blessings to manifest in your life? Do you truly believe and understand that God wants to supply your every need. Jesus said in Mark 9:23 If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. Nothing is impossible with my God Think about this; Scripture tells us that lack and insufficiency are part of the curse, Deuteronomy 28 . Scripture also tells us that through Jesus we have a covenant with God and have been redeemed from the curse. Galatians 3:13-14,29 That means that you don’t have to live under the curse any longer. Jesus set you free from the curse and has enabled you to live under all the blessings of Abraham listed in Deuteronomy 28:1-8 1. Prosperity, 2. Health’ 3. Exaltation, 4.Victory of your adversary, 5. God’s Favor, 6. Fruitfulness in every area of our lives and 7. Supernatural Provision. I want your faith to grow in the truth that God is your Provider! Paul wrote to the church in Rome speaking of ABRAHAM and said: Romans 4:20-21 “He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able to perform.” God can be trusted to be your provider, God doesn’t just make promises, He also fulfills them! He is willing and able to give Supernatural Provision for every area of your life. Do you trust Him? If you dare believe , God will demonstrate that He is your total source of supply. God is not limited to your paycheck, He is not limited by your bank account. He is not limited by the country’s economy, He will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory. One way to activate your faith is through sowing of seed. If you sow seed you will get a harvest. The more seed the bigger your harvest. God is my Provider!! God will always come through!! Hebrews 11;6 God is no respecter of persons. But He is a respecter of faith. Faith pleases God. If you take hold of these truths and activate your faith, you will get results. Jesus paid the price and redeemed you from the curse just as much as he has for anyone else. Determine right now that you will not stagger at Gods promises to supply your every need. Stay strong in your faith and remain fully persuaded that he will not let you down. Now is the time for you to walk in the fullness of God’s blessing and experience Gods supernatural provision. Riding season is finally here! I’m so excited I can barely type! Both bikes are running great, and this year the husband (Road King) is 13 years old and the boyfriend (Softail) is 31 years old. This summer is going to rock! Finally got my virgin ride in on Sunday. The husband came to life immediately, no battery tender, started once since Boxing Day! Oh yeah, gotta love those reliable old Harleys! It was a lot of fun riding with Reg and Brock, scraping floorboards through the Markdale corners then dipping and diving through the Beaver Valley. Life sure is good when you can get your ya-yas out!

I did get to Dover again in March and stayed with my old friend Jim. I made an afternoon trip into town, hung around Tim’s cuz it was not the type of day that I was able to start drinking too early. I still had places to go and people to see! My old friend Marion was coming to visit later that afternoon and I planned on a payback from years ago which required some level of sobriety! You see, Marion is often the DD just because she is such a giving person. She is one of the gals in my old Hamilton circle who always took care of everyone whether it was a meal, a place to stay, someone to talk to, or a designated driver. Well, not tonight! Tonight Marion had a place to stay and a designated driver! After some priming at Jim’s, we were off to Dover. First we hit Angelo’s, then the

Brigg. I did enjoy the night, but it will never be the old Dover again. After experiencing the old Dover for so many years, I just don’t get too excited about the new Dover. The best part about Dover is seeing old friends! On Saturday I found myself still in the area so I stopped by Crazee Paint’s shop, just around the corner. Tracey has had a very exciting month! She was featured in the Port Dover Friday 13th March Edition AND was hand chosen and invited by JoAnn Bortles to be part of the Valkyrie Project in Tampa, Florida, where she is still working on the 1969 AMC. The biker community and friends came together to raise enough money on gofundme to get Tracey to this awesome voluntary project! The Valkyrie Project’s mission is to encourage participation of women in all aspects of the automotive industry. Together women will build, paint, and race a 1969 AMC. The build can be followed online at http://www. warriorprojects.com. And that was Dover! After an uneventful few weeks, I was feeling a bit lonely so I went to Kincardine and visited the Boyfriend (Rosebud) at Smiley’s. A huge thank you to Smiley and Company for all their help with my old Softail, that first year is as tricky as the evo gets, and it is tricky! There are some pretty interesting things in the air around the shop! Recently.

Mike is rumored to be involved in a post apocalyptic themed motorcycle to be used in an upcoming movie. That’s almost as interesting as checking out Mike’s new King Bagger that he says, and I quote, “goes like a gofer shot from a potato cannon”. Then there’s Linda’s new birthday present and what she’ll do with that one! Thoughts of airborne gophers are making my dreams very strange . . . I can’t wait to get back down to Kincardine again soon, the good stuff always happens after I leave! I attended Fox HD’s Ladies Night and was greeted at the entry by “My Pakage”, a new Harley product for men. A few laughs, a quick picture, and it was into the “No Customers Beyond This Point” area. There were quite a few booths set up including the Georgian College Come Ride With Us gals, The Dock radio station, and Scentzy. The Fox guys attempted to find a bacon scented candle from the Scentzy gal but it was not available! The Fox team also setup a bike on a stand so the women who had never ridden could take it through the gears without any real risk I thought this was a terrific way for a few girls who were a bit intimidated to conquer their fears and give it a go, and surprisingly quite a few did! Next it was time to learn how to pick up a bike. Unfortunately, they used a Sportster, now I can pickup a Sporty just fine, picked it up 3 or 4 times, pumped it like a barbell, but I really need someone to show me how to pick up that Road King! I hope next time they use a more intimidating bike for that lesson! It was a good night all in all, met quite a few people, many from the Collingwood, Thornbury, and Meaford area. Always good to see the Fox crew, it’s where my husband (the King) came from! And there’s more ABATE news! Brantford Chapter 8 is the newest chapter. ABATE does not slow down in the winter! The Kitchener ABATE Chapter hosted a pool tournament

“How do I stop the medicine from working?” “Your partner must say ‘1-2-3-4,’ he responded, “but when she does, the medicine will not work again until the next full moon.” He was very eager to see if it worked so he went home, showered, shaved, took a spoonful of the medicine, and then invited his wife to join him in the bedroom. When she came in, he took off his clothes and said, “1-23!” Immediately, he was the manliest of men. His wife was excited and began throwing off her clothes, and then she asked, “What was the 1-2-3 for?” And that, boys and girls, is why we should never end our sentences with a preposition, because we could end up with a dangling participle.

Paddy texts his wife... Mary, I’m just having one more pint with the lads. If I’m not back in 20 minutes, read this message again. A blonde gets a job as a physical education teacher of 16 year olds. She notices a boy at the end of the field standing alone, while all the other kids are running around having fun kicking a ball. She takes pity on him and decides to speak to him. ‘You ok?’ she says. ‘Yes.’ he says. ‘You can go and play with the other kids you know’ she says. ‘It’s best I stay here.’ he says. ‘Why’s that sweetie?’ says the blonde. The boy looks at her incredulously and says, “Because I’m the Goalie!” On his 70th birthday, a man was given a gift certificate from his wife. The certificate was for consultation with an Indian medicine man living on a nearby reservation who was rumored to have a simple cure for erectile dysfunction! The husband went to the reservation and saw the medicine man. The old Indian gave him a potion and with a grip on his shoulder warned, ‘This is a powerful medicine. You take only a teaspoonful, and then say ‘1-2-3.’ When you do, you will become more manly than you have ever been in your life, and you can perform for as long as you want.” The man thanked the old Indian and as he walked away, he turned and asked,

This is the story of the young blonde flying in a two-seater airplane with just the pilot. He has a heart attack and dies. She, frantic, grabs the mike and calls out a May Day. “May Day! May Day! Help me! Help me! The pilot had a heart attack and is dead and I don’t know how to fly. Someone help me! Please help me!” She then hears a voice on the radio saying: “This is Air Traffic Control and I have you loud and clear. I will talk you through this and get you back on the ground. I’ve had a lot of experience with this kind of problem. Now, just take a deep breath, stay calm and everything will be fine! Now give me your height and position.” She then says, “I’m 5’4” and I support Obama” “O.K.” says the voice on the radio, “Repeat after me: Our Father, Who art in Heaven”

A man and his wife were awakened at 3:00 am by a loud pounding on the door. The man gets up and goes to the door where a drunken stranger, standing in the pouring rain, is asking for a push. “Not a chance,” says the husband, “it is 3:00 in the morning!” He slams the door and returns to bed. “Who was that?” asked his wife. “Just some drunk guy asking for a push,” he answers.

“Did you help him?” she asks. “No, I did not, it’s 3am in the morning and its bloody pouring rain out there!” “Well, you have a short memory,” says his wife. “Can’t you remember about three months ago when we broke down, and those two guys helped us? I think you should help him, and you should be ashamed of yourself. God loves drunk people too you know.” The man does as he is told, gets dressed, and goes out into the pounding rain. He calls out into the dark, “Hello, are you still there?” “Yes,” comes back the answer. “Do you still need a push?” calls out the husband. “Yes, please!” comes the reply from the dark. “Where are you?” asks the husband.. “Over here on the swing,” A Scottish couple took in an 18-year-old girl as a lodger. She asked if she could have a bath, but the woman of the house told her they didn’t have a bath, although if she wanted to, she could use a tin bath in front of the fire. “Monday’s the best night, when my husband goes out to darts,” she said. The girl agreed to have a bath the following Monday. After her husband had gone to the pub for his darts match, the woman filled the bath and watched the girl get undressed. She was surprised to see that the lass didn’t have any pubic hair. She mentioned this to her husband when he came home. He didn’t believe her, so she said: “Next Monday, when you go to darts, leave a little early and wait in the back garden. I’ll leave a gap in the curtains so you can see for yourself.” So the following Monday, while the girl again got undressed, the wife asked: “Do you shave?” “No,” replied the girl. “I’ve just never grown any hair down there. Do you have hair?” “Oh, yes,” said the woman, and she pulled up her nightdress and showed the girl that she was really generously endowed in the hair department.....very generously indeed. The girl finished her bath and went to bed. Later that night, when the husband came in, the wife asked him, “Did you see it?” “Yes,” he said, “but why the hell did you have to show her yours.” “Why ever are you worried about that?” she said. “You’ve seen it often enough before.” “I know,” he said, “but the dart team hadn’t!” Teacher: If I gave you 2 cats and another 2 cats and another 2, how many will you have? Johnny: Seven, Sir. Teacher: No, listen carefully. If I gave you 2 cats, and another 2 cats and another 2, how many will you have? Johnny: Seven Teacher: Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you 2 apples, and another 2 apples and another 2, how many will you have? Johnny: Six. Teacher: Good. Now if I gave you 2 cats, and another 2 cats and another 2, how many will you have? Johnny: Seven!!! A very angry Teacher: Where the f*ck do you get seven from?!?!? Very angry Johnny: Because I’ve already got a f*ckin’ cat at home!!!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a beautiful girl ‘Will you marry me?’ The girl said, ‘NO!’ And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and went fishing and hunting and played golf a lot and drank beer and scotch. As he waited, he was approached by a man who asked, “Son, can you tell me where the Post Office is?” The little boy replied, “Sure! Just go straight down this street a couple a blocks and turn to your right.” The man thanked the boy kindly and said, “I’m the new pastor in town. I’d like for you to come to church on Sunday. I’ll show you how to get to Heaven.”
