Bisque socket head depicting an aged man with incised wrinkles, prominent modeled thick grey eyebrows, long pointy nose, closed mouth in benign smile with deeply incised smiling crinkles in the cheeks, grey glass eyes, white mohair wig and ears, Sonneberg composition and wooden fully-jointed body, wearing antique cotton and linen costume, straw bonnet, leather boots. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: S 8 Germany. Comments: Cuno and Otto Dressel, from their American historical series, circa 1890, the model was used as a portrait doll of Uncle Sam, and also appeared in factory models costumed as this example, presumably a farmer. Comments: Gebruder Sussenguth, circa 1924, the bear was produced in four sizes (this being the smallest) for a few years only; described as having “lateral movement of eyes and tongue, brought about by gravity”. 125. Very Fine Early Maitrise Model Marquetry Cabinet with Intricate Interior 22” (56 cm.) h. x 16”w. x 7”d. Of finest woods with various fruit wood inlays, the double door cabinet opens to reveal an elaborate interior comprising 14 different drawers of various sizes, and an inset decorative niche behind which is a door opening to a hidden compartment. 126. French Musical Automaton “Lady at the Masquerade Ball” by Leopold Lambert 17” (43 cm.) A bisque head lady with blue glass paperweight eyes, painted lashes and brows, closed mouth with outlined lips, brunette mohair wig, carton torso and legs, hinged right hip, wearing silk and lace party costume, is seated on the edge of a velvet-covered base, her shapely legs crossed at the knees, and her bisque arms posed with a black velvet party mask held in one hand and a tambourine in the other. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: (paper label listing two tunes on the underside). Comments: Lambert, circa 1890, when wound, and lever released, the doll turns her head side to side while alternately lifting and shaking the tambourine and lifting the mask to her face when head is turned in that direction; meanwhile her leg taps. Value Points: charming automaton accentuated by beautiful bisque face, rare to find with two tunes, mechanism and music function well. $4000/5000

129. frame base with original painted finish to simulate ground-cover is a lady with wax-over-paper-mache head, blue enamel eyes, closed mouth, original wig in elaborately arranged braids and curls and decorated with cascading pearls, shapely carton torso and legs, and paper-mache hands whose fingers and wrists are sculpted to realistically pluck at mandolin strings, original coral and ivory satin gown with matching bonnet and appliqued gilt paper and Alencon lace trim. When wound, the lady glides forward, then turns to one side or the other, pauses, circles and glides again, all the while turning her head side-to-side and strumming the mandolin which has beautiful hand-painted decorations. There are two original brass labels on the base, “Theroude Paris” and “Brevete SGDG” indicating that Theroude had deposed his design. Excellent condition. Theroude, Paris, circa 1850. $3500/4500
