FROM THE EDITOR I have met so many new people as a result of this magazine. I become more and more aware that Bulldog owners and breeders have one thing in common: they are generally stunning people. I think the world can see for the first time how the quality of Bulldogs compares from country to country. The Bulldog of the year qualifiers and winners are outstanding dogs. This issue of Bullish Magazine has been a team effort with superb designs. Three of the designers on our panel have taken the big step and launched the DogMagazine. HERDING TEST A fellow bulldogger and I took 4 of our bulldogs to a herding instinct test. The purpose of a herding instinct test is to create a positive setting in which the dog is allowed to succeed at attempting to herd livestock. Sheep are most typically used and there are between 3-5 in sheep in a herd. This test is used to assess a dogs natural herding instinct. Ultimately this test is used to help a trainer assess if the dog has the potential to learn the skills going forward. Each dog is tested individually in the ring. Most dogs only last 6-8 minutes of herding time, especially if the dog is keen and starts trying to herd as soon as it’s released. Often 4-6 minutes is enough for dogs that show a great deal of enthusiasm. The trainer 70 | November 2014 | Bullish magazine

Most dogs only last 6-8 minutes of herding time. will work with a dog that is timid or shows low interest for 10 - 15 minutes to try to spark some instinct and drive. All four of the dogs we took were conformation dogs. Three of them have CGN titles (equivalent to USA CGC), two of them have agility, obedience history and not one had ever seen sheep before. As humans, our job was to stay close to the trainer, remain silent and let the dogs do what comes naturally. We were allowed to pick up the lead line and show the dog how to direct the herd out. ately. All four had very different reactions. Only one dog barked and none showed any signs of aggression or going for the throat of the sheep. Instinctively the dogs knew to go back and gather the one that got separated from the group. The most fascinating moment was watching the dog who I would call a “momma’s boy” puff his chest up and stare the sheep down. They stood about five feet apart, eye to eye with the sheep backed in the corner. We were told the sheep would go the way the dog turned his head. And they did. Herding Instinct Certificate (HIC) is not an official CKC title, just like Temperament Test (TT) but we are quite proud to add both at the end of our dogs names. It was really insightful to get this glimpse into how the dogs think. Sometimes we pigeon hole them by saying... He’s a momma’s boy or she’s just too silly. Dogs are truly amazing because once again, we were the ones that came away with the lesson.

ITALY BULLDOG OF THE YEAR In Italy the Bulldog of the Year is an invitational event organized by the Italian Bulldog Club. Today it represents a show very much awaited for by Italian Bulldoggers, it has become a national and international showcase of some of the finest Bulldogs. Three expert judges officiated at the show: Walker Enrica (Britishus kennel – GB), Bennet Rhonda (Rhobull Kennel – GB) Avi Mallach (Pneimallach Bull – IL). This year the show was held at Montichiari (BS) in a very elegant setting with British atmosphere. In the ring there were three stations for the judges. Each 80 | November 2014 | Bullish magazine

judge assigned to each subject a score, the total scores has causes the final classification. 35 bulldogs qualified: 14 male and 21 female. After the ratings the dogs did a tour in the ring while a speaker presented the dog and its career. Then the long expected result was announced: Best Opposite Sex was awarded to La MARCA ZEUS and BULLDOG OF THE YEAR 2014 is Orsamaggiore of Salvatore Drogo’s Myuniverse Kennel (Italy). DOG TRAINING TIPS If you have a problem with your puppy moving in a straight line beside you, (some call it side winding) there are a couple of things you can do to discourage this kind of movement, before it becomes a habit. Most of this starts as a puppy while learning to gait. If the puppy moves in too close, our tendency is ti use the lead to push/pull the puppy back away from the legs. Instead of pulling or pushing him away, just change hands with the lead and let him move on your right side. I always move a puppy on the left and right sides. It just makes sense if you always move the puppy on your left side and he is always looking up at you

over his right shoulder, some muscles are not being used. If this doesn’t work, move out in front of the puppy and, with bait or a toy, get him to come to you head on as you walk backwards. You might feel silly and look even sillier but it works. Don’t do this in the ring, just while practicing. It takes time, persistence and patience.

This article about the movement of a Bulldog was written for the Cape Bulldog Club's e-newsletter by Elizabeth Hugo Milam, an American Bulldog Club Hall of fame breeder. She and her family have been involved with show bulldogs since 1967. In that time they have bred and/or owned close to 50 AKC champions, with 25 being home bred. Their dogs have won close to 150 specialty awards. Elizabeth is an American Kennel Club licensed specialist Bulldog and French Bulldog judge. Bulldog Movement. way a bulldog moves is often the subject of much controversy. There are two major standards utilized in the show world today, the British Standard (which FCI is based on) and the American standard. Currently, the American standard is the most like the original British standard of 1865, except in the movement department. We use the standard as our guide to learn what is considered “perfect� for evaluation and as guidance in our breeding programs. What to do then, when this major aspect is not clarified so well in our standards. We have to dig deeper for the final answer. Bullish magazine | November 2014 |

The original British standard says this in regard to movement; “From it's formation the dog has a peculiar heavy and constrained gait, appearing to walk with short, quick steps on the tips of it's toes it's hind feet not being lifted high but appearing to skim the ground, and running with the right shoulder rather advanced , similar to the manner of a horse in cantering”. The current British standard says this; Gait/Movement/ Appearing to walk with short, quick steps on tips of toes, hind feet not lifted high,appearing to skim ground, running with one or other shoulder rather advanced.Soundness of movement of the utmost importance. And the BCA (Bulldog Club of America) Standard says this; Gait The style and carriage are peculiar, his gait being a loose-jointed, shuffling, sidewise motion, giving the characteristic "roll." The action must, however, be unrestrained, free and vigorous. There was a standard used in England up to a point when the Kennel Club called for one singular standard to be used instead of multiple ones. Called the “Allied” Standard, its wording for movement goes like this; The animal should have perfect freedom of movement and activity, notwithstanding the peculiarly constrained manner of gait natural to the breed caused by the immense development of the head, chest and shoulders, and by his hind legs being higher than its fore legs. ment, we naturally have to consider the physical make-up of the dog. According to our standard (regardless which one you chose to follow) the breed is wider in the front than he is in the rear and also has a back that is roached with a rise at the loins and a low set tail. Moving towards you, the bulldog should move naturally from his wide set front. A bulldog must have an arched neck. In order to have strong arch, the neck has to have enough length to it. So heads seemingly set on the shoulders will never move correctly. By virtue of having a full, wide front, in addition to a proper neck, the shoulders of the dog should be set so that the full power of his front end is realized. This means a well-laid back shoulder and an upper arm that is balanced correspondingly. It is often said (not in any standard) that a bulldog needs to “walk his width�. This is an often very misunderstood statement. A bulldog with no neck, moving very stiffly forward with tight elbows and no forward extension based on poorly set upper arms might also walk his width. This can never be the only and final determination about movement coming towards you. The natural way for a normally constructed dog to travel forward is to converge slightly as he speeds up. doing that smoothly. A big and correctly constructed bulldog will never “get in his own way” when moving, even with a natural convergence. From the BCA standard; “Forelegs--The forelegs should be short, very stout, straight and muscular, set wide apart, with well developed calves, presenting a bowed outline, but the bones of the legs should not be curved or bandy, nor the feet brought too close together”. If the legs are properly straight, the ribs properly round, the chest properly deep, round and full and the pasterns strong (not curved or bandy), the dog will not “move too close” when coming at you. Just be aware of the composite parts as you evaluate movement. Straight ahead movement (with zero convergence) cannot truly be considered proper if the dog has no neck, has straight shoulders, is narrow in the chest or ribs. Put the importance on the anatomy first. Too many people are making the mistake of admiring dogs that“walk their width without exploring the issue deeper. The BCA standard mentions a “characteristic roll”. This means the skin over the ribs move side to side as the dog moves. Moving away from you, the bulldog should never move wider than his front end, or even the same width. By his construction, he should never be pigeon toed or move with open hock. The standards are consistent with this view of the hindquarters; HINDQUARTERS The legs should be large and muscular, and longer in proportion than 108 | November 2014 | Bullish magazine

the forelegs, so as to elevate the loins. The hocks should be slightly bent and well let down, so as to be long and muscular from the loins to the point of hock. The lower part of the leg should be short, straight and strong The stifles should be round and turned slightly outwards away from the body. The hocks are thereby made to approach each other and the hind feet to turn outwards. One should never interpret “peculiar” to mean unsound. A bulldog must never limp. The peculiarity comes strictly from the fact that he is not built like any other breed. One should also never admire a bulldog that moves as many other breeds do. They are not constructed the same so why would they move the same? “Keeping up with the big dogs” in the group is not a compliment. We do not discuss “reach and drive” as we do in many other breeds. While good forward reach is a desirable way for any dog to move, our bulldog’s hindquarters are not built to “drive”. Plus the wording of the standards clearly do not call for that.

You need to know that within a couple of days you will be the servant instead of the owner of the dog. Because a bulldog ‘likes to do it his way’….you will find out you have no choice. You can start a puppy course like everyone else and the dogs have to go all the way, but the bulldog is the one cheating on an exam, graduating as top dog! Bedroom rules; the dog in his basket and the owners in bed. But somehow they manage to work the boss on the floor and take your bed for themselves. Couch rules; the couch is supposed to be for the boss, but the bulldog takes the space he needs and you are allowed to sit on the edge. They can be lazy when they want to. They decide when its time to play, time to walk and time to eat. They stare at you with their droopy eyes‌‌or they start barking as long as necessary only to make you give in to their demands. When you want to go for a walk they can give the impression that they are a sleep…..but when you wait for a moment you will see they are faking….. are the eyes really closed?….the snoring gets louder….oh and I forgot to mention: some bulldogs can snore louder than your granddad! When you want to walk your bulldog in the direction you choose you will have to take your time. Not because bulldogs are lazy but simply for the reason that everybody on the street has an opinion about English bulldogs……they like them or they don’t understand them. When they don’t understand them they have to tell you……you as a proud owner…….why did you pick such a dog? And from day one you have to defend your choice….again and again. Or they like your dog and they know the breed and they want to cuddle, when you give in to that your bulldog goes all the way and takes his time…..and learns everybody loves him!! So either way it takes time to walk your bulldog and you -of course- are his servant. On the streets a bulldog belongs to a special group. Other dogs have either respect or don’t understand them at all. Why do they make those strange sounds?…why do they walk in this funny way?…..it looks like they hit a wall with 100 miles an hour!…..you can almost see other dogs think: what ìs that??…..which planet does he come

from??….so it’s better when you go to places with more English bulldogs. Your dog will have a better time…….because a bunch of bulldogs is a guarantee for fun………..and you can talk with other strange bulldog owners who will understand you and who exactly know what you mean when you talk about your dog. So think twice when you decide to choose for the English bulldog, it will make you a different person. And you never ever want another breed again……. because you kind a fall in love with your English bulldog……they are so special……you have to experience it to understand……..wauw….. Annette
