When I first began studying the Standard many years ago, the description relating to the head, "Viewed at the side, the head should appear very high, and very short from the point of the nose to the occiput." had me completely baffled......it seemed to describe a short forehead and, yet, the early breed books profusely mentioned "the long forehead" or "the long flat skull" as a distinct feature to be admired and which to aspire.....Then light dawned....I recalled reading an old article stating that the Standard described features which in our breed differed dramatically from almost all others....It occurred to me that in all other breeds( with the exception of the brachycephallic breeds,) have a nose, which is 100% of the head distance between the tip of nose and occiput, whereas in a Bulldog, the nose is approximately 75% of the head from tip of nose to occiput....(see illustrations)....therefore, comparatively speaking, the Bulldog is "very short from tip of nose to occiput........Those early writers were correct, when they wrote about their admiration for a LONG forehead.....The Bulldog has neither a short forehead nor a short head.
