Vinus van der Veekens posted this illustration on our Facebook group with the following question: Still relevant.? i have extracted some of the comments: “This is how muzzle should look like on a frenchie. Strong, wide and well filled up under the eyes. Tail is perfect and there is just one reason you never seen one, we all just forgot about it and accepted NO tail! For me the front is too wide which will cost too much energy in proper movement. For me that is the only part being old school from this drawing.�

” it’s not impossible to have such a tail” “Always good topics Vinus just would like for more breeders to join This head unfortunately you do not see anymore regarding underjaw. Underjaw is something that is lost from this photo nowdays”. “Old one but still how it should be......” “How can we get back to this standard?” “I am still convinced there are enough dogs around in the current group of breeding dogs around the world to get back to the standard on some points. It’s all about selection, selection and .... selection. It will take a longer period but is possible for sure” “I had the strangest conversation ring side at our last show. We had S with us so this “breeder/owner/handler (unknown to us) saw him. Many things were said I won’t go into here. But the most alarming comment had to do with S” tail.... Can take care of that “issue” by snipping it off. I said but the standard allows for a tail like this. Happens all the time.... Yikes!” Thank you Vinus!

Theo K The first dog handling competition for children at a formal dog show was held in 1932 at the Westbury Kennel Club Show in Long Island, New York, in the United States. In 1933 the Westminster Kennel Club in New York offered a children’s handling class, and prizes were established in the names of early promoters of children’s events, Leonard Brumby, Sr, and George F. Foley. The American Kennel Club recognized Junior Showmanship as a dog show class in 1971. Today, major Junior Showmanship competition is offered worldwide through Fédération Cynologique Internationale clubs,as well as through the Kennel Club (UK) The Canadian Kennel Club, The American Kennel Club,The United Kennel Club (US),as well as similar clubs. Other show-giving dog clubs and businesses may also offer Junior Showmanship events. I would like to include ‘juniors’ as a regular feature of the magazine. Hope: Dale Neves & Tessa Roodt My name is Hope and I’m the face of our 2015 “Healthy, Wealthy and Wise” campaign, dedicated to educating and empowering people to make a difference in the lives of Frenchies. Healthy, because that’s what we Frenchies would love to be. Wealthy, because a wealth of knowledge brings about the power of change. Wise, because wisdom is the key to a better life for us. am 13 weeks old and have 3 brothers and 5 sisters who are all healthy and strong. Last week we said our goodbyes as we all went our separate ways to our new homes. My home, which was carefully chosen for me, is a special needs home as my new humans know all about how to take care of me. Unfortunately I’m not as strong as the rest of my family as I have Hemivertebra (read more about this in our next issue), a condition that may affect me later on in life. I hope I am able to run and play until I’m old. I hope I am able to lead a normal and happy life and I hope my story brings awareness about one of the problems we Frenchies may face.

Doris Boyd | DOG TRAINING TIPS
Doris Boyd “I want to train my dog Lucy. Where do I start?” Doris Boyd answers: “Bring Lucy into your kitchen. Put the leash on but drop the end of the leash on the floor. This is training but she does not know it. Put some treats over on the table or counter. Tell her to Wait. Use your normal voice. Do not act like she is to rrspond in any way. Tell her wait and when she looks at you, reach over and take a piece of the treat and very gently give it to her. Do not talk ...do not say good girl. just keep doing what you’re doing. You can train her in your kitchen, teach her that listening to you is fun and rewarding. Just use the word “wait” and use it quietly. Do this over and over until it is second nature to her. Make it fun and one of the most important things you can do is, speak softly and use a gentle touch. Do not play while training. Do not put the treats in your pocket. Leave them on the table. She will learn to wait while you reach for her treat. It does not seem like much but the inner action will instill confidence in herself. All the stacking and training in the ring will be easier if she knows it is fun, just being with you. Be patient...good luck”

Dale Neves & Tessa Roodt My name is Rupert and I am 10 years old. I was a breeding dog for most of my life before I found my ‘forever’ home last year. I’ve got a lot of catching up to do..... places to go, people to meet, toys to play with. I’ve got lots of friends now and I’m happy to meet anyone who wants to play. My best friend is called Beetle and he always wakes me up in the morning by licking my face. He’s allowed to share my toys although he doesn’t like the squeaky ones! I love going on holiday and I’ve already been to the sea.

Dale Neves & Tessa Roodt I also go to our farm a lot although I’m not allowed to chase the chickens.
If they didn’t run, I wouldn’t chase them. Simple as that! I had a few medical problems in the beginning and had to have an operation on my soft palate to help me breath. My doctor also widened my nostrils as they weren’t working properly. As a responsible owner, my human also neutered me. Ouch! I also have hemivertibra (spelling!) but I go for acupuncture regularly as well as physio

Fortunately it’s not painful but sometimes when I wake up in the morning it seems as if all four paws want to go in a different direction. Once I get going though, I’m almost as fast as a border collie. Slight exaggeration! And who says ‘white men can’t jump!
