FROM THE EDITOR Our first issue since the start of the Covid -19 pandemic. to deal with.

However Covid-19 is not the only pandemic we have

The second pandemic is the fashionable GSD top -lines in French Bulldogs. Who will ever forget my GSD post on Facebook? I didn’t know that in the standard it says that French Bulldogs should have a sloping topline like a GSD but it became fashion for exhibitors to extend a dogs hind legs with the effect that more and more people were doing it. Its wrong! The third pandemic is the shocking way in which one of the local French Bulldog Club committee members were treating new people in the breed. Why? They are jealous. People claim they are reputable breeders when they are not. Just check their Facebook pages it will give you some clues… People breed like there is no tomorrow. The fourth pandemic is the sale of dogs who are “vet checked” at massive prices, when no health testing was done. The poor innocent buyers end up with massive vet bills when the wonderful puppy they bought from is suddenly double the purchase price of the dog. The breeder takes no responsibility and continue breeding with these animals. I know of at least 5 dogs who had BOAS surgery and they can all be linked to the same grandsire. I had a discussion with the owner of this dog about this (who I considered a very good friend) She told me I am wrong and people should know what the risks are when they buy a French Bulldog. In other posts on Facebook its clear that breeders are doing their best to generalize back, breathing and other health issues. What crap! I have removed at least one person who is selling dogs pet shop style. Don’t be surprised when Mr. Perfect dies on the operating table after his Boas surgery. The next pandemic is the poor quality of judging and the mediocre quality of dogs that wins CC’s, often at the expense of much better quality of dogs. I can honestly say MR OR MRS JUDGE you have no clue what you are doing. Unfortunately this is the norm. Who is at the end of the lead”? What a shame! Theo

AVERSIVES by Michaela Lendowsky There is such a lack of knowledge around the topic of aversives, what is aversion/an aversive? Is something aversive to all dogs? Does it have to be a certain amount of punishment/correction to be considered bad?

Here are a few definitions of aversion: 1- a feeling of repugnance toward something with a desire to avoid or turn from it 2- a settled dislike 3- a tendency to extinguish a behavior or to avoid a thing or situation and especially a usually pleasurable one because it is or has been associated with a noxious stimulus The thing is, we can't really decide what is aversive or not because it depends entirely on the being we are working with. For eg. There are some dogs that will find petting aversive, especially from strangers

There will be some dogs who find banana aversive while some love it. There will be some dogs who find high pitched squeals aversive and others will come running with excitement. Just like us, dogs, cats, horses, bunnies and all other beings choose what they find reinforcing and aversive.

But there are obviously some exceptions, any tool or any correction that aims to cause discomfort is and always will be called an aversive. The reason why these tools/corrections work is because the animal will purposefully avoid the sensation/emotion caused by that tool/correction. If an animal loved the sensation, they wouldn't work to extinguish the unwanted behaviour. These tools are anything that is advertised as a quick fix or corrector tool for eg. Prong collar, e-collar, pet corrector spray, spray bottle, bark collars, citronella collars, stop pull walking equipment, ultrasonic devices etc.

AVERSIVES by Michaela Lendowsky want to highlight this point again, the reason these devices work, is because it causes distress and/or pain to the animal that the animal will do whatever they can to avoid dealing with the stimulus.

Any trainer or "specialist" or whatever words they love to use on themselves, that advertises they can fix behaviour quickly, will be using aversives. And you shouldn't be using them. Again, this training does work, but by instilling fear and anxiety in your dogs.

So why am I so against aversives? Firstly, aversives create anxiety in dogs. It has been proven that dogs who are being trained with punishment, have a higher cortisol level in their body when training and show a much higher level of body stress signals than dogs who are only trained using positive reinforcement.

Secondly, anxiety can lead to fear based behaviour problems, which are probably the hardest behaviour problems to manage and treat. Dogs who have been raised in a household where punishment and aversive training has been used tend to have more reactivity and aggressive behaviour than dogs who haven't had any aversive training. They also have a higher rate of turning on their owner. The reason this happens, is because when a dog wants to avoid something, one of their ways to go about this, is to become scary and intimidating so that that thing won't come near them. For eg. If you have a dog that is nervous around other dogs, gets snappy when other dogs approach and you correct them for becoming snappy, next time they will try and be even scarier since the snap didn't work. This will lead to the dog doing a proper lunge, then will add barking. If the corrections carry on, the behaviour will continue to escalate. You will have a dog that won't wait until a dog is close by, but will start reacting from when the other dogs are far away.

AVERSIVES by Michaela Lendowsky They can also just defend themselves from a punishment. This is usually seen when an animal is backed into a corner just before they're punished.

Thirdly, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour has released their new position statement saying "Based on current scientific evidence, AVSAB recommends that reward-based training methods are used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems." They also go on to say that punishment is never necessary for dealing with behaviour problems or training. The thing about science is, science has proven something to be true or false. Disagreeing with science doesn't make you correct, it makes you incorrect. When science disproves a theory, it is because it found new research and improves its theory. Science is also unbiased, well, it's supposed to be anyway.

This is just supposed to help create awareness. To help those guardians stop themselves from buying a quick fix tool to fix a dog behaviour that's natural to them. We need to be patient. We need to research the people we call in to help us with our animals so we can do them justice, not take away the things that make them animals. Animals have instincts and urges, and we should just help them adapt to our world better instead of using punishment to suppress their every attempt at communicating with us.
