The American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and Canine Good Citizen Advanced (CGCA) Titles… Yes, Bulldogs Can!!! Alecia Gibson Agape Bulldogs I have received many chuckles, and sidewise glances, when stepping into the obedience rings with my Bulldogs… much to my pride and other’s surprise, we have often come out with first place and other ribbons amongst all breed competition, proving that Bulldogs can, and do, perform well in obedience! There are a variety of fun and challenging performance events that Bulldogs are more than capable of excelling in, some of which have been nicely highlighted in previous Bullish issues. A good entry level event is the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and Canine Good Citizen Advanced (CGCA) tests, which once passed, go on your dog’s title of record. Both tests require basic obedience training, and test your dog’s temperament, sociability, and his/her manners in public situations. Unlike most other AKC titles, these are a one-time evaluation. Pass the requirements and your dog achieves the title. With a bit of time and training, I believe that any Bulldog and handler team can achieve these titles. Many dog training groups are available to help you and your dog prepare to take these tests, and the tests are sometimes offered at dog shows, or through local training clubs. Obedience and other performance titles are, in my opinion, good for the breed. They are proof that Bulldogs can be obedient, athletic, and healthy, contrary to much negative press about the breed. The training process also serves to strengthen the bond between you and your Bulldog. I have found that my Bulldogs truly enjoy our training time, and are generally eager to please (given the right “motivation” of course!). Even if you are not interested in achieving more advanced training and titling, these two titles are both fun and relatively easy to achieve. They give you a great sense of accomplishment, and nice letters on the back end of your Bulldog’s name, proving to the world that they can be “more than just a pretty face”!! The Canine Good Citizen Test According to the AKC website (www.akc.org), “The CGC Program teaches good manners to dogs and responsible dog ownership to their owners. The 10-step Canine Good Citizen test is a non-competitive test for all dogs…” The CGC test includes: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

The Canine Good Citizen Advanced Test According to the AKC website (www.akc.org), “AKC Community Canine is the advanced level of the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Program. Dogs who pass the AKC Community Canine test earn the official AKC Community Canine title that is designated by the letters ‘CGCA’ (Advanced CGC) on the dog’s title record. Whereas Canine Good Citizen tests are most often tested in a ring and situations are simulated, the AKC Community Canine test is done in real situations…” To earn the CGCA title, dogs must pass all ten of the following items: 1. Dog stands, sits, or lies down and waits under control… 2. Walks on a loose leash in a natural situation (not in a ring) – does not pull… 3. Walks on loose leash through a crowd… 4. Dog walks past distraction dogs present; does not pull… 5. Sit – stay in small group (3 other people with dogs)… 6. Dog allows person who is carrying something (backpack, computer bag, etc.) to approach and pet it… 7. “Leave it.” Dog walks by food and follows owner instructions, “Leave it”… 8. Down or sit stay – distance… 9. Recall with distractions present (coming when called)… 10. Dog will sit or stand stay while owner enters/exits a doorway or narrow passageway. Owner calls dog through door when ready… Please go to the AKC website for more details on the requirements for each of the above test items. The AKC website details both of these tests, and you can also find examples on YouTube. While I would recommend a training group, many of these skills can be taught while at home, or out in the community with your dog(s). Achieving these titles not only gives you a great sense of pride, but also gives you a dog that is well-mannered and attentive to you at home and in the community. All for Love of the Bulldog!!! A big thank you to my friend and trainer, Ramona Winfrey, who has taught me just about everything I know regarding obedience training, and who has supported and encouraged me to venture into the world of AKC obedience with my Bulldogs! Ear infections: Glen Kolenc Following on from our intro to skin allergies, the first thing to talk about in detail is ear infections. Ear infections in Frenchies are common and can sometimes be a frustrating thing to clear up. But does having an ear infection mean your Frenchie has a skin allergy? The answer is…..maybe!!! Here is all the important info you need to know on ear infections. Symptoms of ear infections: • Head shaking • Scratching at the head • Red, sore looking ears • A bad smell coming from the ears • One dog licking constantly at another dogs ears Diagnosing ear infections: Ear infections are fairly easy to diagnose based on the symptoms, and a vet looking down the ear. However they are not so straightforward to treat, because the actual infection may be caused by different “bugs”. Mites, yeast and range of different species of bacteria may cause an ear infection and each of these bugs require a different treatment. Sometimes there is a mixture of bugs in one ear, and if both ears have an infection in them, there may be a different cocktail of bugs in each ear. To determine which bugs are causing an ear infection, each infected ear should, by your vet, have a swab put down it, then rolled onto a slide and looked at under the microscope. This is called doing “ear cytology”. They will be able to see which bug(s) are present. If there are different species of bacteria present, or certain nasty looking species of bacteria seen, then a further test, usually sent off to a laboratory should ideally be performed. This test identifies which bacteria are present and tests them for the most suitable antibiotic(s) to use. This is called doing a “culture and sensitivity”.

Allergies Treatment of ear infections: 1.Ear Cleaning Before considering treatment, we need to get the ears nice and clean and keep them clean. Most ear infections come with a buildup of wax and/or pus and other “gunk”. There are a variety of ear cleaners available from your vet and pet supply stores, however here are 2 natural ear cleaners: • Salt water (a teaspoon of salt dissolved in a small cup of warm water) • Raw, organic, unprocessed Apple Cider Vinegar (diluted 1 part ACV into 10 parts water). Regardless of what cleaner you clean the ear with, you should wet a cotton ball with the cleaning solution, squeeze a bit of the solution from the cotton ball into the ear canal and then massage the ear. Then with the cotton ball, “scoop out” as much mucky material as you can with your finger. You’ll be surprised sometimes how much muck comes out! Repeat this 3 or 4 times, or until the cotton balls start becoming clean. NEVER EVER place Q-tips or cotton buds down the ear. 2. Treating the specific bugs Based on the results of appropriate tests done on the ears, a variety of different medicated ear drops (and/or oral medication) might be prescribed. The duration of treatment will depend on how bad the ear infection is (a week to 2-3 months might be needed) but treatment should NEVER finish until repeat cytology is performed on the ear to check that all the bugs are gone.

Allergies So, back to the golden question – is an ear infection a sign of an allergy? before I said maybe. The real answer is “not necessarily”. Dogs commonly get ear infections, as a one off, and respond well and fully to treatment if managed appropriately….and the ears stay good. However, if your frenchies ear infection is treated appropriately and it settles down, but then the treatment is stopped and the infection comes back….and you treat it again and it settles….and comes back again….and you feel like you are going around in circles…..thats when an allergy is almost certainly underlying the apparent recurrence! If this is the case – allergy testing and appropriate management are advised. Food allergies and environmental allergies can trigger off recurrent ear infections. SUMMARY OF EAR INFECTIONS • Red, sore, smelly, itchy ears alert you to the presence of an ear infection. • Appropriate swab tests should be done on the ears to identify which bugs are causing the infection. • Cleaning the ears and appropriate medication to kill the bugs (based on the results of the tests done) can then be started. • For frequently recurring ear infections, an underlying allergy should be suspected, and this should be tested for and managed. Without getting a nunderlying allergy managed, ear infections will always keep coming back • If your Frenchie has been diagnosed with an ear infection and is getting prescribed medication without any tests being done, please request that they do so. Ask them “aren’t you at least going to do cytology on those ears”….

Annette: Bulldog Story What’s there to say about English Bulldogs? June We are reunited as a family. Because my brother and our bosses went all the way to the World Dog Show in Milan. And I was with my second bully-mama and her family. When I come over they make a kind of party week of my visit. They also have two bulldogs; the sister of my brother called Aimy and her “familybrother” Clarence. And they have 3 children who I think adore me. So sounds good so far, don’t you think? They make sure they have enough sausages to spoil us with, they take us for a swim almost every day. And I have my special chair there and the choice out of 3 dog beds. So I don’t complain when they bring me there for a few days. I had a great time. My brother also had a fabulous time in Milan. I had to hear his stories the whole week. Some stories even four or five times. So I can give you an insight of his adventures. The journey started with a long drive over there in our special customized car. What a sight must that have been. A little Toyota starlet 20 years of age covered all over with us two English bulldogs and fully packed. So packed my boss makes sure the backdoor stays closed during the trip afraid everything falls out. A long the way they went through a lot of tunnels. The longest was 17 kilometers. When I heard that part I thought pffff I am glad I was relaxing at my sunbed. I do not like small spaces. In Milan he stayed in a great and luxurious hotel next to the Fiera Milano. So they were able to walk to the show area. In the hotel there were many more dogs with their owners. From all over the world. Much familiar people who they know from other shows.

Annette: Bulldog Story (cont 2) The room they stayed in was air-conditioned en had a lot of space. He had his own dogbed from home. The only disadvantage was he had to sleep in the same room with our bosses. And one of the bosses snores. So it was hard to get sleep for him. I never suffered from it but he is a light sleeper. As a showdog he wants to be in perfect condition when he gets into the ring. So you he says he can’t use red eyes. Because a judge looks at that kind of small details. Thursday morning after breakfast they went to the Fiera for the Italian Club Show. At that time I was still a sleep I could sleep late. It would kill me to rise that early. My brother said it was really cool in the hall very different with outside, there it was like 32 degrees. In the Netherlands it was hot also. Perfect climate for me. At the show there were a lot of famous dogs from all over the world; the Crufts winner of this year and even from America and Mexico. Also other dogs from the Netherlands like my brother. There is a female dog from the Netherlands who my brother is in love with. She is young and participated in junior class. For my brother she is the one……well I know how he is and take it with a grain of salt. It means I don’t take him serious. My brother participates in the Champion class because he has earned a lot of titles in his career. The other dogs in that class also have titles. So my bosses enjoyed it a lot, they say the level of dogs was very high. They were proud to be a part of the show and to show my brother. He earned a third place in his class. The first place should have been better but that didn’t happen, but they were proud anyway. .

Annette: Bulldog Story (cont 3) The winner of Crufts 2015 was best of breed and won the show. My bosses like that dog very much they say he is beautiful as well. After the show they all went back to the hotel to eat and relax. At least that is what he told me…..he told me that with a strange smile…..i wonder if he didn’t sneak out of the room to hang out with other dogs or something like that. He can be sneaky. The second day of their journey it was time for the World Dog Show. When you win that show you earn the title World Winner/ Champion. That’s a title every showdog likes to win in his life. I am not a show dog and sometimes I think why try that when you can also chill in the sun. In the Netherlands we say every fool has his absence. There were many dogs this year at this World Show about 256 bulldogs. I can imagine that’s very special to see, so much bulldogs together. You don’t see that much often. Very young dogs, juniors, males and females, champions and even veterans. My brother was again in Champion Class and had a judge all the way from the USA. My boss who shows my brother had his fanciest suit on and my brother was topfit and specially washed for the show. He doesn’t like that, he likes to swim but doesn’t like the shower. Strange don’t you think for me water is water. But all that didn’t matter because my brother wasn’t placed en didn’t had a prize. My bosses think it is not a shame with so much beautiful dogs. A dog all the way from Mexico became World Champion. The girl my brother is in love with won the junior class with the females. So you can say my brother has a good taste. From whom he would have it? I say nothing lol.

Annette: Bulldog Story (cont 4) My brother has a special people-friend from Thailand, she was there to they were even in the same hotel. So they were both very happy to see each other again. In the hotel my brother got a lot of attention from people, they talked about him and wanted to take pictures of him. I think he likes the attention a lot. He sometimes brags about it. My bosses also went to see the Centre of Milan. And my female boss again could not resist it to buy new shoes. You know by now she is addicted to shoes. And you know by now the car they were travelling in is small. So I guess they had to close the doors using hands and feet. Sometimes they blame me that I can not keep size especially with food. The next time they tell me that I will let them remember this moment‌.. Very early at Sunday morning the three of them started the long journey back home. They had a good trip and arrived save and sound back in Holland. In the afternoon they picked me up. I think they were very happy to see me again. Their eyes were a kind of wet. I think we all had a good week with great memories to look back to. I am glad when my brother stops telling me the same stories over and over again. Till next time! Greetz Hazes
