TAKE A HIKE 5 faves kevin finagin

When asked who her favourite author was, Margaret Atwood replied, “The one I am about to read.” It’s a clever line, and it applies to hiking, too. My favourite hike is always the one I am on, even if it is cold and wet and miserable. I chose this fate, and it still beats a whole lot of the alternatives. No matter where you are hiking around Golden, be content. You are outside in the Columbia Valley on your own time, and there are much worse places in the world to be. That said, here are a few old favourites of mine for you to explore. Gorman Lake. This one is obvious. Despite the ongoing road problems, this is the first hike everyone thinks of when they have visitors. “Oh,

stock photo

yeah, today we’ll just run up to a small lake in the mountains, cute little spot.” And then the visitors get there and absolutely can’t believe what they’re seeing. The hike itself is not all that difficult. It’s the first hike many kids in Golden do, when they are eight or so. Parson Repeater via Hobo Creek. This is one of those hikes that, for some reason, doesn’t get as much use as it deserves. The reward is a spectacular 360 degree panorama of the Columbia Valley; the hike itself has a couple of uphill grinds, but otherwise is reasonable; and the approach road has just been graded. (There’s still some active logging going on, so weekends are best for this.) It has a special appeal for me, since I can do it from my back door. Canyon Creek. I’ve always had

What’s your

a soft spot in my heart for this trail, dating back to my first year of teaching. One evening, in an interminable series of late nights at school, I went out for dinner and ran into a much more experienced and wiser teacher. When I started moaning about not wanting to go back to school again after dinner, she came up with a brilliant solution: “So, don’t.” That thought had never occurred to me before, but it rapidly began to make sense. Instead, I strapped on snowshoes and hiked up Canyon Creek in the full moon. Such wisdom is not to be ignored, and that other teacher became my wife. You can make a quick trip of Canyon Creek if you are short on time, or you can go all the way to the top of the gondola. It has some impressive cliffs, frequent mountain

GOLDEN

goats and usually not many people. The beginning is unfortunately steep, but the rest of it is a pretty easy stroll. If you’re on a schedule, pick your turn-around time before you start, and away you go. Caribou Creek. This is one for confirmed hikers. It’s a long drive, and the first section up to the old forestry campsite is bloody steep, but then it is all reward. After a long ramble through the alpine, you gain the ridge and look across the Beaver River to the peaks and icefields at the south end of Glacier National Park. Often people camp up here for a few days. For more info on how to access the trailheads for these hikes, visit www.goldenhikes.ca

Sky divers jump to raise $2000 for golden youth centre kris king

August 22, 2013 Sky Dive Extreme Yeti will jump for charity. From each jump they will donate $50 to the Golden Youth Centre. “I was wondering how I wanted to beat my record of 12 jumps in one day and thought, why not create an exciting and fun challenge to our town, to raise money for youth” Says owner and tandem master, Myles Delorme. Overall, the challenge is to fund-raise over $2000 dollars, to support the Golden Youth Center. “I was active in the Boys and Girls Club when I was growing up and I wanted to donate to something similar here in Golden” says Delorme. The goal is to actively challenge locals to seek pledges and create corporate challenges in the name of youth of our community. Onsite during the day there will be a viewing area, BBQ and prizes. All experience levels and newbies are invited to join in the fun. All jumpers will be participate in tandem skydives. “We want to put over 40 people in the air, which will be 20 jumps per tandem master. It is a lot of work on the ground. So we have planned for extra staff on hand, from office workers, parachute packers and an extra tandem master on the ground to coordinate and prep jumpers. All these extra staff will be from our sister drop zone in Alberta” notes Delorme.

The drop zone in Golden is very unique in the world. It is one of the only places where active sky diving is between two mountain ranges. Each flight soars to 10,000 feet AGL. The bird’s eye view from the plane is spectacular as they fly past, glaciers, mountains and rivers. It is well worth the flight up to ease the nerves. The charity challenge jump cost is $299 plus tax. The package includes your tandem master, flight and equipment. VALLEY TEENS climbing in the bugaboos lynn martel

When Pat Morrow was just 17, a group of experienced climbers invited him to join them for a climbing camp in the Bugaboos. As a novice climber Morrow appreciated the chance to climb easier routes while watching some of Canada’s top climbers of the day attempt more serious objectives. The experience made a life-long impact. Since then Morrow has returned to the Bugaboos numerous times, climbing many of the area’s worldrenowned granite spires. And last month, Morrow returned with 10 Columbia and Kootenay valley teenagers and three mountain guides participating in the fifth annual Bugaboos Teen Camp. Running July 12 to 14, the camp was launched by the Conrad Kain Centennial Society (CKCS) in 2009 in memory of mountain guide Conrad Kain. An Austrian native who settled in Wilmer, BC, Kain is revered for many impressive first ascents, including Bugaboo Spire and the Rockies’ highest, Mount Robson, and for his conservationist philosophy. The camp, open to Grade 10 and 11 Columbia and Kootenay valley students, aims to introduce teens to the excitement of climbing in a spectacular setting, and also to the wonder of being in remote wilderness. “I came here when I was 17 and was blown away,” said Morrow, CKCS chair. “The aim of the camp is to expose the teens to as many people as we can—CMH Bugaboo Lodge housekeeping staff, cooks, guides, the Conrad Kain hut custodian— people who are making a living in the outdoors doing what they love to do.” An impressive role model himself, Invermere-born Morrow became the second Canadian to summit Everest in 1982, two days after his teammate, Laurie Skreslet made national history. In 1986, Morrow became the first person to climb the Seven Summits, the highest mountain on each of Earth’s seven continents. He and his wife, Baiba, 6

have spent decades photographing and filming cultures in mountain regions around the world. Since settling in Wilmer in 2007, they’ve become passionately involved with Columbia Valley environmental and conservation efforts. The 50 youths, aged 15 to 17 who have participated in the program since 2009 have not only shared their enthusiasm for the camp with their classmates come fall, but several have embarked on outdoor-related careers, including photography, river guiding and working at backcountry lodges. No doubt, this year’s students from Kimberley, Cranbrook and Invermere (Golden and Creston teens have participated other years), will share their own stories. Based from the Alpine Club of Canada’s Conrad Kain hut and led by Wilmer ACMG mountain guides Kirk Mauthner and Tim McAllister, and Canmore’s Jen Olson, and accompanied by BC Park Ranger Craig Browne, the group climbed Pigeon Spire, followed by Eastpost Spire on the third day. Over the course of the weekend, they practiced self-arrest skills on a glacier and were lowered down steep rock faces. “I didn’t expect to be doing something as awesome as Pigeon Spire at all,” said Cranbrook’s Ethan Vandenbrink, 17. “I learned a lot about crossing glaciers and ice travel.” “I got really scared when my knee got stuck,” said Kimberley’s Natasha Norton, 16. “It was helpful when somebody could tell me exactly how to move, where to put my foot. I want to climb more. I can’t stop smiling when I’m back here.” The camp, however, was equally rewarding for the guides. “When I was a kid I was fortunate to attend a summer camp that had a mountaineering component and got on a five-day day trip to climb Mount Eldorado in the Cascades,” McAllister recalled. “It

www.TheLocalTownie.ca

cl imbing on the bugaboos | lynn martel PHOTO was brutal. But on that trip were two guides who supported my concerns, consoled my whining, and encouraged me to work hard and do my best.” While the experience inspired his ultimate career choice to be a guide, the Bugaboos camp, which he’s guided for four years, has provided McAllister an opportunity to pay it forward. “To share such a great mountain experience with students from the Valley and to show them the rich guiding and natural history of the Bugaboos feels rewarding,” McAllister said. “The teens are simply ecstatic and super appreciative of the opportunity,” added Mauthner, on his third camp. “It’s a very positive vibe and it’s a complete pleasure to share that experience with them. I love watching their eyes

light up and the friendships they develop amongst each other—very formative.” And this year, having Mauthner’s 15-year-old daughter, Micaela, and McAllister’s son, Koeye, 16, participate was extra special. Expressing gratitude to the program’s generous sponsors, Morrow said turning teenagers onto the mountains by visiting an undeveloped place via selfpropelled, non-mechanized means is a way of paying it forward to the land itself. “I hope to instill a sense of vulnerability of the land,” Morrow said. “Their generation is going to become stewards of the land. Maybe they’ll do a better job than we have.” To learn more or to apply for the Bugaboos Teen Camp, visit http://conradkain.com/

Golden Cycle CLub Summer Projects Continue Submitted from Golden cycle club The Golden Cycling Club has been busy working on the usual maintenance and trail infrastructure improvement projects. Signage for the Mountain Shadow Trail System is going up with new Duoflex signs. While costing half the price of others, they are also much easier to install. Thanks to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO) for suggesting this sign, and for providing the funding to cover their costs. Many thanks also to MFLNRO recreation officer Ken Gibson for volunteering six hours of his weekend to help install them. The new Canyon Creek trailhead located along McBeath Road will be further developed. The kiosk sign at Sander Lake will be moved to the new trailhead and a new toilet will be installed. Further developments include expanding and improving the parking lot surface.

Thanks go to Dave Best of Best Impressions Photography and Web Design for revamping our website to improve signing up for online membership. Trail users—please remember to buy a GCC membership! GREIF Parenting Adventures of a

not-so-super, mostly average mom ALISON BILES

When we lose someone in our lives who we thought would always be there, when life takes us in an unimagined and impossible direction, our first reaction—at least my first reaction—is to give up. I hunker down in my room and cry and cry and cry. When I finally manage to stop and peel myself off my mattress, one look in the mirror at my swollen beyond recognition, I-just-ugly-cried-all-night-eyes causes me to start crying all over again. I pretty much become a big ridiculous puddle of mess. Even worse than seeing my messy reflection in a mirror, is seeing my kids’ shock, their uncertainty and their fear when they realize how much I am hurting. I hope for a sunny day so that I can hide behind my sunglasses. I become overly enthusiastic and positive, drag them on some sort of excursion and pretend to be super mom. I am fun and funny and exciting and energetic. I swing higher, laugh louder, run faster and play longer than any of the other kids at the park, including my own. I do all of this with the occasional tear still running down my cheek. Eventually I calm down and begin to notice the confused and terrified looks on my kids’ faces, having just watched their mom act like a crazy person. As a parent, when you really and truly fall apart, when you need to grieve in that messy way, what do you do with your kids?

On our latest adventure, Captain Safety, Awesome Girl and I went rafting. Captain Safety was openly scared and, of course, concerned about safety. Awesome Girl was claiming to be bored in order to hide the fact that she was also scared. I was scared of not making it through the day without crying. Maybe the way to grieve, fall apart, lose it and then recover, while still being a parent, is not to be super mom and not to hide your feelings behind over-enthusiasm or sunglasses. Maybe the best way is to realize that in a family you truly are all in it together. What affects one member affects the others. Maybe as a parent you don’t need to do anything with your kids other than be honest. Maybe when they see you stand up, find balance and recover your smile they will remember that moment and find strength in it when they are going through their own messes. Maybe the difficult times are just as helpful as the good. Maybe floating down a river in a rubber boat together is OK, even if it’s rough sometimes.

and totally unprepared for what the river had in store. Messy or not, we were all in the same boat. When Captain Safety stood up in the very front of the boat, abandoned both his fears and strict safety protocol then balanced his way through the rapids, facing them head on, it occurred to me that maybe in my nine year old our little boat could find strength. When Awesome Girl got completely hammered with a huge wave, the shock of cold water rushing over her face, which scrunched up and readied itself to hammer us with a full-on-noholding-back-ugliest-ever-crying-fit, I watched her take a breath, her whole face relaxing and then changing from just about to cry to smiling, rippling, full-out laughter.

GOLDEN LANDFILL Composting begins for yard waste SUBMITTED from CSRD

Golden residents are now being asked to separate their wood waste from their yard and garden waste when they take it to the Golden Landfill. “We are now separating those materials because we’re going to begin an organic composting system,” says Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) Waste Reduction Facilitator Carmen Fennell. “Our goal is to keep organic material out of the landfill and use it for a more beneficial purpose.” In the past, wood waste was chipped along with yard and garden waste and the product was used on site in various ways. “We used to use it as an alternate daily cover for the garbage, or as fill for wet areas. We will continue to use wood waste for that purpose, but we’re going to separate out the yard and garden waste because that will give us a usable product, and drastically cut down what is staying at the site. Whatever we can do to extend the life of the landfill will save Golden residents money.”

The yard and garden material without any contaminants is referred to as ‘organic waste.’ It will be composted in rows, and the material being collected now will be the first batch of compost. This usable compost takes about a year to produce, so is expected to be ready for residents to purchase in 2014. This diversion process has begun so any loads going to the Golden Landfill have to be separated.

DOES THE REAL LOVE OF YOUR LIFE NEED A NEW HOME?

“We realize this will mean some more separating for residents as they take a load to the landfill but we’re hoping everyone will appreciate having compost material available next year.” The cost for wood waste and yard and garden waste is $35 per tonne, and the next six-week free yard and garden waste drop off begins on Saturday, October 5, 2013. For more information call Waste Reduction Facilitator Carmen Fennell at 250-833-5936.

local fitness

I DON’t want to go to the gym KRIS king

I am famous for whining and complaining that my fitness routine is lack-a-daisy, and almost non-existent. Is this because I expect more from myself? Or, am I just living in a fantasy that I could be a muscled Adonis like the dudes in an Old Spice deodorant commercial? I have to get real here. I am a weekend warrior, in the mountains, when it comes to fitness. I am no better than the low-rise office tower guy in a suburban city. The work week is hectic, a few 12-hour days per week with meetings, sitting and talking, sitting and computing, sitting and eating, sitting and writing. So, how am I giving my body a workout after my brain has a work out? Well it really comes down to being a weekend/evening adventure warrior and embracing it! The gym is no longer needed. I have found some addicting adrenaline induced coping strategies to share with you, my friends. The positive cost-benefit analysis on some simple, yet effective tools and activities for me to get outside and move my body are worth the minor investment versus the years of a gym membership. Now this may not work for everyone, but it makes me feel good and not guilty at the end of the day when I have a beer and plow straight into a cookie dough Blizzard. RIDE A BIKE THREE TIMES A WEEK. Stage One: Get yourself on some Internet classifieds (Facebook’s amazing array of classifieds and buy and sell pages are very useful) to search for a low-cost used all-mountain bike or street bike. Stage Two: Get yourself a bike club membership in Golden, Revelstoke or Invermere. The trails around the Kootenays are built for people like us, the weekend warrior. Each club has training sessions for all skill levels and they are very nonjudgemental. If you feel you don’t have the skills, well all of these folks at one time didn’t either. If

near Calgary and Loop the Lake in Invermere, to name a few.

anything, you are going to meet some new riding companions. The road bike scene is very active too around these parts. Highway 95 is a great route for an easy transition to long-distance road cycling.

FOOD = FUEL

Stage One: Get some great trail or running shoes at the local shoe store, find some fast looking sport socks, a small music device and a sweet pump-up-the-jam playlist and you are set.

Balanced diet blahh blahh blahh. Honestly, here are a few tips on not getting stressed about eating what is right and what is wrong—just a few things to think about when you are reaching for the chips instead of the veggies and dip. Eat what is sinful in moderation. Eat small meals many times a day, then three calorieloaded meals. Don’t skip breakfast. Drink a glass of water when you first wake up. Dump the soda pop and juice; it is more expensive than gas. For a sugar craving fix, eat some fruit instead or have a fruit-based smoothie. Every meal should have a majority of veggies and fruit and some grains. Skip meat in your meals a few times a week and replace with beans, lentils or other plant-based protein supper heroes. The more fibre, the better your guts will thank you. If it makes your body feel good then eat more of it.

Stage Two: Just like biking, tell everyone you know that you wanna go running. Someone will meet up with you and bug you to be partners for a jog/run. They may even give you tips and it is simply worth it for the encouragement.

Thank you to the amazing user groups of decades past and volunteers who spent countless hours perfecting the trails around our home towns to make it as rad as it is to recreate and enjoy the mountain lifestyle here!

Stage Three: Remember it is not The Amazing Race! Start off with short distance goals. And yes, it is OK to walk a bit to catch your breath and wait for that stomach stitch to ease. Don’t worry, you’re not going keel over with a pancreatic injury, just think of the great bottle of wine you get to have at the end of the day. We all go through it. Eventually you will challenge yourself for longer runs, or maybe even a pro race, such as the Zombie Run

Before you start a new adventure fitness routine, I would suggest talking to your medical care professional for some great honest advice and tips to get the most out of your fitness regime. Also, these sports have risks involved and you should have proper knowledge of the use of safety gear and proper judgment in risk mitigation and first aid.

Stage Three: Tell everyone you know that you have a new bike, give them your number and you are sure to be invited out for spontaneous bike rides around the area. If you’re embarrassed that you are still at the stage of skills that you need to walk your bike uphill or through difficult terrain, that’s referred to as “cross training.” The trails all around are mixed in skill level and time commitments. Even a quick after dinner bike ride will take the same time as going to the gym. TRAIL/STREET RUNNING (the cheapest option)

Business Retention & Expansion kICKING HORSE COUNTRY PROJECT LAUNCHED BY GOLDEN AND aREA INITIATIVES sponso red BY golden and area initiatives

Golden Area Initiatives’ (GAI) new Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) project is designed to stimulate economic development and growth by assisting existing businesses. Kicking Horse Country Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Golden, Golden Community Resource Centre, Town of Golden, College of the Rockies and other local organizations and residents are working in partnership to implement the Kicking Horse Country BRE project. As an action-oriented, community-based approach to business and economic development, BRE promotes job retention and growth by helping communities learn about issues and the concerns of, as well as opportunities for, local businesses, and set priorities for projects to address these needs. Business development and job creation are key factors in developing healthy and vibrant communities. Ultimately, communities will have greater success in attracting new business if existing businesses have favourable economic conditions, and strong local support.

Selkirk College’s Columbia Basin Rural Development Institute (RDI) is supporting communities in BRE implementation by providing training for BRE researchers, implementation support materials (BRE manual, confidentiality forms and processes), access to the online regional e-pulse data management and referral system, and data analysis and report writing support. “With the valuable information collected through community-driven BRE projects in hand, decision makers and economic development practitioners in the region will be well positioned to provide

Before a community can assist existing businesses it must identify the businesses’ needs, concerns,

and growth opportunities. Through the BRE project, trained researchers visit businesses and gather information. The local leaders running this program then work to address identified issues and opportunities. Participating business will have the ability to have a direct impact on the priorities, initiatives and funding of local and regional economic development agencies that directly support this area. Additionally, participants will receive the rolled-up, regional reports generated from the data gathered.

targeted support to our local businesses and to take collection action to improve the overall business climate in our region,” said Dr. Terri MacDonald, RDI Regional Innovation Chair in Rural Economic Development. “A key aspect of this project is confidentiality,” added Denise Wheelhouse, GAI’s Local BRE Lead. “We do not publish information on individual businesses. The project is very careful about this confidentiality issue.” Information gathered from the visits is compiled and analyzed by the Columbia Basin RDI. The Local BRE Lead and Steering Committee review key findings and recommendations and set into motion a plan for follow up action. “One of the reasons for the popularity of the BRE project is that it not only supports long range planning for the community but also yields some short-range tangible results,” Wheelhouse said. Trav’ln Townie Abroad with bc freerider Steve romaniuk dylan wyer

dylan wyer photos Life with a professional mountain biker really is all that it is cranked up to be. Some of the craziest things I’ve ever seen happened during my week with Steve Romaniuk in Chiang Mai, Thailand. From action on two tires to crazy moments at the bar, it really was “all that” and more. Time and time again we’d plan to go out shooting in the morning, but would find ourselves sitting at Infinity nightclub with a bottle of Absolute at 3 a.m. It would be past 5 a.m. by the time our heads hit our pillows. Thus, it would be afternoon by the time our feet were on the floor again. Well past the loading time at Chiang Mai Biking, another potential day of shooting had been wasted. Could I expect anything else from a professional mountain biker? I mean that’s their reputation, isn’t

it—party by night, ride by day? We’ve all seen the extreme sports videos that have as much goofing around and partying in them as they do riding. Before we knew it, it was Steve’s second-last night in Chiang Mai. He wasn’t going home without a at least one day of shooting. Finally, a productive decision was made, and bed by 11 p.m. it was. It turned into an evening in the courtyard at the hostel, sipping a beer or two, but no more. Steve was mixing tunes for everyone to enjoy, and for the first time showed me his biking portfolio. It was also the first time I had been nervous in a long time, as I fully realized the opportunity I had stumbled into. His portfolio was stacked full of cover shots and feature magazine articles.

This was the real deal. It was on, which meant I had to bring my A-game. It also meant that I was about to attempt to ride a full-on downhill trail when I hadn’t ridden a mountain bike in three years. Now I had two reasons to be terrified, and my camera gear did as well. I had yet to see the trails I’d be shooting on and had no idea what to expect. Lighting ended up being far from ideal, and no light units were available. Only one of my lenses had a big enough aperture to let me crank my shutter speed up high enough to produce quality images. A fixed 50 millimetre lens was far from ideal for shooting action, but I had to be ready to take on the challenge. The tracks were gnarly and technical, and Steve knew how to shred regardless of the bike he

was riding. In this case it was an old beat-up Kona Stinky, far from the likes of the bikes he rides back home. On the steepest of spots he’d pull his front end up and fly down the large roots and rough terrain almost like he was floating on his back tire. The trail would turn, and I wouldn’t see him again until he stopped to wait for me. Even when he was manualing down the road at the end of the day, I couldn’t keep up to him. Just like that, we trailed off onto our own dusty paths. It was a rough week on the body being a visual storyteller with some of the world’s best—an interesting week to say the least. A week of some of the best work one could ask for, the job got completed and Vampt got their shots. Life just doesn’t get any better than it does for a freerider.

www.GoldenSoundFestival.com Have you ever thought what they would say on your obituary? I suppose its kind of a morbid thought. but how would you be described? What would be considered your greatest accomplishment? Funny how our life boils down to a couple paragraphs. When you really think about it we spend a lot of time worrying about things that don’t matter in relation to the whole picture of our life. How many times have you worried about something the seemed very overwhelming in the moment, but tuned out to be no big deal Your life is what you make it and you determine your own reality. So, this means that it is likely time to refocus, an here are a couple tips to do that 1. Only worry about the stuff that matters…and in case you wondering if it can’t fit in on your obituary then its not worth stressing about

2. Live every day as if its the last. Seems obvious, but if we look at every day as possibly our last we are bound to make right decisions. 3. Weight your options. Spend some time everyday evaluating what’s truly important for you. Then spend your day focusing first on those things 4. Ask other people to define you. Our life is built on accountability. We only succeed to achieving our goals in life if we are willing to allow other people to be part of them. Every person has a purpose, and your job regardless of any other belief system is to spend the time discovering that purpose. In fact, we should be spending time allowing for our purpose to become treason that we are remembers, and the thing that writes our obituary. Life is short and we are not promised tomorrow, so its important that we realize the morality of life and we spend time making sure our priorities are in line and we are living a purpose-filled life.

WEED PULL keep calm and weed on!

Wildsight photo Summer’s in full swing, and sometimes it gets a little overwhelming with the bugs, the heat, the storms—and the weeds. They’re everywhere! In our gardens, by the side of the road, growing up through the road, weeds come in all colours, and all kinds. Some weeds you already know—dandelions, plantain, daisies—but others might be strangers to you. There’s burdock, the knock-off rhubarb; orange tansy, that beautiful, insidious invader; spotted and diffuse knapweeds, pretty yet poisonous; and goatsbeard, the yellow flower with seeds that look like giant dandelions, to name a few. And, not so slowly and very surely, they take over. Some use burrs to spread their seed, some stretch out tendrils above or below ground, some simply smother the competition—regardless, they are a threat. Don’t underestimate their power. Invasive

The boys of summer on the columbia | Marcie trenholm photo

GEAR BY ROOKIE An Innertube, a river and a cold palm bay sean (rookie) nyilassy

If there’s one thing that makes or breaks a town in the summer, it’s the ability to kick back in the hot sun and lay into a six-pack of Palm Beezees. I guess that sets the bar a little low, so how ’bout doing it while floating down a river on an inner tube? But wait, there’s more; you’d like to end up just a cakewalk from your doorstep. Welcome to Golden: The sun flows over your glistening, oiled-up skin as smooth as the Palm Beezees flow out of the BC Liquor Store and the Columbia River flows under your inner tube at a leisurely pace that seamlessly transitions to your short flow home when you’re done. Before we get to the goods, use real common sense to prevent things from getting real on the river. Plan your day of flotation and let somebody responsible know so they can call help if you’re not tucked comfortably in bed on time.

Be responsible out there—even though the Columbia seems gentle, one mistake will show you how relentless and unforgiving it is. Injuries and fatalities have occurred on the river, so bring some safety gear like a throw rope, spare tube, life-jackets, zip-locked cell phone and sunscreen. Always watch the river ahead for fallen trees, bridges or other obstacles to give you plenty of time to steer wide and clear. Keep your wits about you by casually sipping the Palm Beezees in moderation. Finally, don’t tie yourself to your 19 other buddies; tubes lashed together are far more likely to get stuck or trapped around an obstacle than individual floaters. Now for the fun to begin, you need a floating device. Fancy, colourful purpose-built tubes are alright, but an old tire’s inner tube is awesome--just not your

daughter’s tricycle tire. Next, you need floating attire. Men, join the cool kids in your Speedo. Seems like you’re ready, so spray on some SPF 4 suntan oil, put some lemon juice in your hair and start driving south. While there are ample primo locales to start the float, first timers can try the Nicholson bridge. En route, you’ll want to keep your skin baking at a low broil from above while your Palm Beezees chill at a refreshing degree. Blow your mind with some rope and a cloth or tough plastic bag to trail them in the cool river behind your tube. If you need to urinate, roll into the water before it’s too late, but beware if the river is shallow, your

feet could get trapped down below, then you’ll be held under the way the water flows and the least of your worries will be pee up your nose. Once you notice the unwelcome signs of civilization, paddle to river right, get out and go home. The confluence of the Columbia and Kicking Horse rivers is a nice spot to get out where you won’t have to deal with train tracks and can stroll down 5th Street to get home. When you get there, sing Don Henley’s Boys of Summer as loud as you can while checking out your new Speedo tan lines in the mirror. Damn that was cool!

Gone are the days when people work 9 to 5 for the same employer for forty years. These days its common for people to get income from two different jobs in one year, have their own business or even work for part of the year. No matter which way you look at it, irregular income is more of a regular way of life for people where you live. One of the unique challenges that happens as a result of this is that you have to expect there are both times of lack and plenty. Here are some tips to manage your income if you find that you can’t count on a pay check every two weeks: 1. Create a prioritized budget When you know what you are making every month its easy to do a monthly budget. When you have more inconsistent income, you have to be more creative with your budget. A prioritized budget means you make a list of everything that you are meant to pay, and you prioritize them in order. Then you just pay them one by one as money comes in. 2. Secret 10 Saving 10% all the time will allow you to build an acceptable buffer that will keep you in good shape

during more slower times. Try to use a separate account, so you don’t even realize the money is there and you don’t spend it. 3. Be your Own Bank Save for expenses in relation to your anticipated cash flow. If you make more money in the summer be sure to take that time to save extra for expenses , so you aren’t overwhelmed in your leaner times. 4. LOCAL ARTIST ENID petheric

A TRUE ROCKY MOUNTAIN EXPERIENCE

sarah jane osadetz

Born and raised in Ontario, Enid Petherick studied at the Ontario College of Art. As a truly unique artist, Enid has preferences about how she works and what inspires her. “I enjoy painting outside and being very close to nature. I also love the human form. Every city that I’ve lived in, I have sought out places where live modelling took place. After a while, I married the two – nature and the human form,” Enid shares. Enid’s love of landscape and expression of connection to the earth is sincerely felt when looking at her paintings. Seeing nature is what you make of it – quiet, vibrant and an adventure. At first, one thing might stand out – a raven standing quietly, the flutter of wings, the colour of the water. Later, the shapes lead to an animal or a person communing with and in nature. This is the experience of wandering through Enid’s paintings. Each layer reveals itself to the observer, as the observer tunes into the message, the feeling, the environment. Impressionists’ work is not about being accurate to the details of perfection as the eye sees it, but the perfection of the moment. It’s like watching clouds in the sky – malleable and full of life and form. There is always something to find, stepping into your own imagination. Between canvases, Enid relaxes by quilting and creating silhouettes with paper and scissors. Enid and Ralph met at the Museum of Natural History in Mexico City. The couple fell into stride from that moment forward, interested in venturing around the world, with

open eyes, hearts and following intuition. In 1969, Enid and Ralph bought an acreage and a shell of a house nestled in the Blaeberry valley. Responding to an ad in the paper, they ventured there and that was it! “I knew I could create there. Being close to nature with the river flowing close by, mountains, trees and wilderness surrounding us, I knew this was the place for me to paint,” Enid muses. Realizing her dreams from school, their arrival in Golden brought inspiration, hard work and a deep bond to the earth. “I’m not much for being political, yet recently, I’ve been working on a message about what humans and industry are doing to the earth. At my home, I’ve witnessed it first-hand. Our bridge was out last year, and our road is out this year. The rivers are shaping the landscape and reclaiming a route differently each year. Our access is being compromised,” Enid observes. “Industry is affecting where we live. I see it first-hand. The body of work is underway, yet I still have more to do.” With industriousness, integrity and vision, Enid and Ralph have raised their family here, realized their dreams and continue to engage in their life’s work. For Ralph, it’s to be Enid’s champion – critiquing, communicating about and documenting her work. For Enid, there’s so much more art to make – so much to say through a stroke of a brush, sewing of a quilt or precise cuttings with scissors and paper. Each artist’s way through the forest takes many strides and many paths to a common goal—expression through art.

Tin Whistle Brewing Peach Cream Ale It’s difficult to beat the dog days of summer, but this brew is a great balance of fruit and beer. Instantly the aroma of peach overwhelms the senses, but don’t fret, the taste is more subtle through the creamy beer. This milk will not be a bad choice; sit in the shade of a tree and enjoy. The BCL price per 650ml is $5.

RIVERS and PEACHES

Past downtown Invermere, down the hill, nestled between the charming Dorothy Lake and the energetic Kinsmen Beach, lies Pynelogs Art Gallery & Cultural Centre. Within the storied walls of a century-old wooden house, Pynelogs and the Columbia Valley Arts Council (CVArts) organize twoweek long art exhibitions, host a variety of concerts, cultural events, festivals and more.

Deschutes River Ale Golden was founded on the confluence of the Columbia and Kicking Horse rivers, and water is part of us and the beer we drink. Our Kootenay water may not be the source of this refreshing ale, but it is a great beer to enjoy on the banks of the river. The River Ale is best enjoyed chilled on the hottest summer days; malty with hop aromas are finished with a lemon/orange citrus. A six pack is $14.99 at the BCL.

Pigion Pose | dibble photography

Local yoga pegion pose dal ia

Have you been riding your bike this summer? Hiking? Swimming, maybe? Are your hips tight and a little sore? I have a great hip-opener for you here, and it is combined with a forward bend, which is great for summer since it is cooling and calming. Please make sure you warm up your joints and muscles a bit before getting into this pose. The full name of the pose is Onelegged King Pigeon Pose (Sanskrit: Eka-Pada-Raja-Kapotanasana – say it to me fluently and get a free class!). I like to get into this pose from Downward-facing Dog, but you can just start on hands and knees. Bend your right knee, and bring it forward and down to the floor by your right hand. Walk your left foot back as far as it’s going to go. There are several variations to this pose (choose the one that’s right for your hips!). The easiest one has your right heel close to the groin, and you will likely need to prop your right thigh up on a cushion or blanket. The farther you take your foot from the groin, the deeper the

stretch for your hip and the muscles around it, so be mindful of your body. If you have your shin parallel to the front of your mat, don’t go any farther. Lift your chest up, and walk your hands closer to your pelvis – this is a back-bend, so mind your lower back! Take a few breaths here, and then start leaning forward and down toward the ground. Lengthen your spine as you do this, leading with the heart, until you can rest your head on the floor, or on your hands, or on a prop in front of you. Wiggle your hips side to side a little bit. Rest here for at least five breaths, or up to five minutes. To come out, carefully place your hands under your shoulders, inhale as you lift your spine up, and slowly come back into Downward-facing Dog or to your hands and knees. Stretch your legs and repeat on other side. Enjoy! Namaste.

bear mountain pat legare

This four-piece band from Vancouver is blowing up right now, playing all the big festivals this summer—Sasquatch, Squamish, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits— and it just keeps going. Bear Mountain is an electronic-fuelled band playing some of the greatest instrumentation out there. They use samplers, loop tools and drum machines but they also play their own instruments and they play them very well. A big part of their shows is all the visuals they use to make it a very special event that everyone will remember. I cannot say how lucky we are to

have Bear Mountain play Golden this September. One of their biggest influences is Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party, who are also playing Golden this September. Bear Mountain’s single, Two Step, is just so good; I recommend a listen for everybody. It is getting a lot of air time on Sirius satellite radio lately too. I’m really excited to finally meet these guys. They are a perfect match for the Golden Sound Festival. www.mybearmountain.com www.goldensoundfestival.com

FIVE ALARM FUNK pat legare

I think for the most part, people in Golden have seen or heard of Five Alarm Funk. Here is a quick breakdown for the few people who don’t know them. Five Alarm Funk, as the name suggests, is a 10-piece funk band from Vancouver. Earlier this year the band was nominated for a Juno Award. What they bring to the table is nothing short of a miracle—a bit of rock, a bit of blues and a boatload of funk. Usually dressed for success at their shows wearing funky outfits or wearing nothing, they are the most energetic band I have ever seen live. They are well-known for pulling the non-dancers out on the dance floor. As a music promoter

myself, one of the biggest challenges, I think, would be to have Five Alarm Funk as an opening band. To try to find a band to take the stage after them is impossible. As soon as we discussed the line-up for the Golden Sound Festival and the name Five Alarm Funk came up, we all knew they would be headlining our festival. I mean, realistically, what band would want to take the stage after these guys? I cannot wait to see them live again! THE DUDES TODD MENZIES

When the first thing on your rider is 24 Lucky beers in cans (we like to shotgun), there is no better name for you than The Dudes. The Dudes are possibly Calgary’s favourite band; formed more than 16 years ago they have won the hearts of their city. Front man and the major creative force behind the band, Danny Vacon is known for his look as much as his distinctive voice. Sporting a long, greying, shaggy beard, an array of truckers’ hats and poorly designed tattoos, Danny definitely has his own style. The Dudes are known for their high-energy live shows. They have even tried to capture their sound on their recordings with a raw, low-fi feel to them. The Dudes are known mainly in western Canada and have played some of the biggest festivals, such as Live Squamish, Keloha, Rifflandia and many more. This September, they will co-headline Golden’s own Golden Sound Festival. Surprisingly enough, this

will be their first stop in Golden. No strangers to touring, they have played across Canada with Pride Tiger, Two Hours Traffic, Hot Hot Heat and Finger 11. They’ve also been showcased at festivals including Halifax Pop Explosion, Pop Montreal, NXNE, Canadian Music Week, the Canadian Junos and the West Coast Music Awards. So, what can you expect from The Dudes’ set at Golden Sound Festival? Take the distorted grunge sound of the ’90s, add a touch of pop melodies, and as their website says, “pure soul.” The Dudes are one of many bands that are bringing back rock and roll. No fancy light shows or backing tracks, just straight-up guitars, bass and drums with a whole lot of attitude and integrity. First and foremost though, you can expect four dudes; nice, genuine dudes who love playing music. http://thedudesmusic.ca/ September 7 @ Golden Sound Festival

Long distance love | stock photo

Summer is a time when many people feel the urge to travel around and spend time away from home, and from what I’ve experienced, when people are on vacation and foreign to the country they’re visiting, inhibitions can get lost and guards unwillingly get dropped. Summer flings and outward flirtation are something, I feel, that present themselves more because of the beautiful warm sun and the sexy brown skin. People also feel more inclined to be in better shape so that they look better in their bathingsuits, making them all the more appealing to the opposite sex, or the same sex, whichever. And seeing as though some people trap themselves into a long distance relationship during these wonderful, promiscuous months, I have to wonder, how long people intend these gaps to be and how committed they are to each other to keep the relationship moving forward. I myself have never committed to someone who didn’t live nearby so I don’t understand the appeal. Do you have an end in sight? Are you each others’ “forever”? Do you take to someone else in secrecy to feel the warmth of another on your skin? There are some relationships that feel distance frequently because of work, you know the old three weeks on, one week off? I’ve experienced that myself with my partner and what seemed at first like the end of the world where I had too many sleepless nights, turned into free time to spend with myself and friends I don’t see so often because I’m all “loved up”. It was rather enjoyable to have the whole bed to myself- now I know why my mother chooses to sleep in my old

bedroom away from my father most nights. But when distance turns into months apart, how do you keep the love alive and keep your eye from wandering to someone who shares your same area code? I’ve known couples who have given distance a go, and I can’t say I know of a circumstance where it’s actually worked out. When friends tell me of their plans to reconnect with their mate many months later because of visa issues or money problems, I never have the heart to tell them that it’s probably not going to work out. You can plan and you can arrange and chat frequently, you can delve into phone sex or cyber/skype sex but you can never fill the void of being separated from the one you love; no amount of dirty talk is going to warm your bed at night. When posed with the question of, do we make this work? Can we make this work? Give yourself a time-frame for its demise as you don’t want to waste great moments of the summer thinking of the one you may or may not end up with. I really hate wasting my time, I’ve wasted so much of it already on lovers not worthy of my love-don’t waste yours! I don’t speak from experience as I’ve already noted-I’m sure there are some people living in long distance relationships who are reading this thinking that I’m full of shit and have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about; maybe that’s the case......or maybe I speak the truth. I received my very first email last month and would love to receive more. Thanks for your kind words and enjoyment of my column. Keep reading and enjoying everyone and send me some love at bettyrides@localtownie.com.
