Keep the Greasy Side Down Back to sledding season

Colin Wallace - Golden Snowmobile Club Snow is on the ground and the buzz is in the air, welcome to the 2013/2014 winter season! Time to pull out Betsie, Rod the Mod, Runswell, or whatever you’ve named your machine and give it the once over. I’m amazed by the frequent and incredibly horrible beatings a snowmobile can sustain and then start first or second pull the next morning. One must remember all the good things a sled can bring before worrying too much about repairs or hassles that go along with owning and operating a recreational vehicle. Be thankful for over the bars blower face shots, snorkel deep champagne sh**hooks, and access to amazing skiing. We also need to be thankful to the

many people in the Golden area who make snowmobiling possible. Without countless hours of volunteer work and meetings we wouldn’t have parking lots, groomed trails or cabins to warm up in. With the West Bench Trail (WBT) nearing completion it is paramount to recognize all the folks involved past and present: Denise and Hal Porter, Dawn and Randy Baun, and Mike Dhami, who got the wheels turning on the project in 2006. The Golden Snowmobile Trail Society board has continued their hard work and the ribbon cutting is slated for this winter. The WBT is a 40km one way trail that connects the

What’s your

Gorman Lake lower parking lot and the Quartz creek parking lot with a new parking lot on the Quartz creek side. Also worthy of mention is that thanks to volunteers the Quartz Creek Cabin is cleaned up and stocked with firewood and the outhouse is clean and stocked with T.P. Please help keep the cabin clean, pack out your garbage and smoke outside. The beacon basin will go in as soon as more volunteer time and snow allow (probably December), and grooming into Quartz, Gorman, and Silent pass will start as soon as enough snow falls. Trail fees are staying the same this year at 20 beans and yearly memberships are available for 150. Memberships and

trail fees go directly back to the area users through grooming, trail maintenance, firewood provision and cabin upkeep. A terrain assessment of our three sledding areas was done by the CAA and a map was drawn up dividing the terrain into simple, challenging, and complex. Along with a little info on how to apply the danger rating scale and the Avaluator to the terrain you want to ride. This map is available at Motortech and Mountain Motorsports. Its free; get one. Checking current avalanche conditions before you head out is also free. Golden Snowmobile Club

Local Hero: Bob Finnie Confluence Park Andrea Johnson With an acute attention to detail and a modest demeanor, Bob Finnie has stood out as the spearhead behind the recent infrastructural developments at Confluence Park. An expansive area that celebrates the junction of our two main waterways, the confluence at the Columbia and Kicking Horse rivers was always on Bob’s mind as a natural space that could be enhanced as a community meeting place. As proven, it was easier said than done! Backed by the Rotary Club of Golden, his early visions for the project incorporated a much larger area with plans to extend the park right down to the riverbank. However, due to the high water line that haunts many local businesses that back onto the Kicking Horse river and other environmental concerns, the project was unable to move forward without a serious redesign. Ministry of Environment officer and Revelstoke resident, Cory Legebekow visited Golden to advise Bob and the Rotary Club on the environmental requirements that their plan for Confluence Park would have to meet. With

his help, they were able to downsize their design plan by creating a space that Cory was confident would meet the standards of

all parties involved. Overall, the process for securing approval from the Town of Golden and the community, and meeting the appropriate

environmental standards took nothing short of four years. Yet, Bob insists that, “when it finally happened, it happened fast!” Once development of the area began, the project was complete within less than a week; a fact that many passerby’s of the area can attest to! Equipped with a leveled parking lot in the field adjacent to the airport, several picnic tables and a fully landscaped green space accompanied by stairs made of rock down to the river (courtesy of the team at HMC Services), the Confluence Park turned out better than Bob had expected. With the many boundaries and obstacles that stood in the way of the fruition of this project, patience endured and Bob continues to set his sights high for other ways to beautify our town. There are plans to add a washroom to the Confluence Park in time for the Grand Opening scheduled for next spring. For more information on the Rotary Club and their involvements, please visit their Facebook page. Golden Rotary meets at 12pm every Thursday at the Golden Ramada Hotel.

s the year races to an end, we become easily distracted making it easy for ourselves to lose focus on the reason why we do what we do. This can cause us to feel off course and even as if we’re just running through the motions. Before you let this happen, follow these tips to make sure your life stays in alignment. 1. Always find your why. From the most simple to the largest tasks, you will only be able to do them if you know why. Knowing the reason we do something will enable us to withstand pain and even difficult circumstances. However, not knowing why you do something will make it more difficult to do, even for a short amount of time. Ever tried to wake up early for no reason at all? 2. Is there a way to do the same thing but in a more enjoyable way? It is imperative that we have these

conversations with ourself on how to do what we are doing but in a better way. This can be applied to our jobs and careers. Everybody needs to work, but if you hate your job, is that really your employer’s fault that you don’t take the time to improve yourself to create new opportunities within your position? 3. Make sure you are accomplishing your why. Sometimes we start with the best intentions and still find out we are not making progress in the way we want to. It’s important we learn to quit or change course when this happens. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Being realistic and honest with yourself is bound to pay dividends. One of humanity’s most important traits is to have purpose in everything we do. Make sure that you are finding the reason for everything you do.

A

s I am writing these lines, it’s -15° outside. Winter is definitely here. Soon the ski hill will open for the season, and the cross-country trails are already buzzing with people. I wanted to share with you a bit about how Yoga can help you ski better and also prevent injuries keeping you on your skis well into a ripe old age. As preparation for skiing, Yoga can help you gain a better range of motion in your joints, strengthen the muscles that support and protect your joints and strengthen your core. It will also help you focus your mind and find better balance. If you want to improve your range of motion, I suggest Yin Yoga which emphasizes deep, long-held poses that target your connective tissue. If you are interested in strengthening your skiing muscles and your core, you probably want to find a Power or Ashtanga Yoga class – these practices promote strength, agility and flexibility all at the same time. They’ll give you stronger, longer and leaner muscles.

After skiing, Yoga can be wonderful for stretching the whole body, taking care of your muscles and joints, and helping you find a quiet, relaxed space. Look for Gentle Flow or Restorative Yoga classes to get a good stretch and some deep, mindful breathing. Some useful poses to try before skiing are: Fierce Pose (or Chair pose) which mimics the skiing pose and strengthens the legs and core, Mountain Pose which engages the whole body and is relaxed at the same time, Plank Pose to strengthen arms and core and Warrior Pose for poise and strong legs. For Après-Ski stretches try Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle pose), any seated or standing forward bends, Spinal Twists and Downward Facing Dog Pose. Our bodies are designed to move and enjoy movement but skiing can be taxing to the joints and muscles, so it is important to balance the vigorous activities with some gentle, slow, mindful movement and rest.

Stop Inflammation Sponsored by Elite Nutrition

Inflammation is a protective attempt by the body to initiate the healing process. Without inflammation, wounds and infections would never heal. However, chronic inflammation can lead to a host of conditions and is the reason inflammation is so closely regulated by the body. Inflammation can be classified as either acute or chronic. Acute inflammation is the initial response of the body to harmful stimuli and creates a cascade of biochemical events that propagates and matures the inflammatory response. Prolonged inflammation, known as chronic inflammation, leads to a progressive shift in the type of cells present at the site of inflammation and is characterized by simultaneous destruction and healing of the tissue from the inflammatory process. Carefully selected formulations can provide the body with exactly what it needs to halt inflammation & stimulate tissue repair by providing your cells with nutrients needed to reinforce elasticity and strengthen connective tissue such as ligaments,

cartilage, tendons, synovial, bone, fascia, dermis of the skin and blood vessel walls. The synergistic effect of these nutrients improves the integrity of the protective epithelial mucosal lining found in the respiratory, genitourinary and digestive tract and helps to maintain youthful elasticity and cell fluidity. As a result, the inflammatory process is greatly reduced or diminished. Stop Inflammation... & stimulate tissue repair with these 6 foundational nutrients Nutricol: Is a proprietary plant complex containing EGCG, OPC’s, theaflavin and resveratrol from green tea and grape. Extracts from grape seed, grape skin and green tea extracts act as powerful inflammatory inhibitors as they embed in the cell membrane and inhibit the release of proinflammatory enzymes. These compounds reinforce the matrix structure of the cell and

improve the overall ability of the cells receptivity to hormones such as thyroxin, insulin, and IGF that are necessary for growth and healing. MSM (99.5% Plant Source) is a bioavailable form of organic sulphur that builds tissue throughout the body. It improves the mucosal surfaces in the respiratory tract therefore improves breathing ability. It also improves structure of joint lubricating fluids to decrease pain associated with degenerative joint disease. It is known to block the formation of and eliminate lactic acid and other toxins. Studies show the correlation of elevated lactic acid levels and depressed immunity and disease. Toxins of any kind, whether internally generated or externally introduced, create cell damage resulting in inflammation. Glucosamine Hydrochloride (99.5% plant source from non-GMO corn)) is a building block for connective tissue, increases fluid content of joint lubricating fluids and decreases joint stiffness and pain

This Winter...

induced friction. The efficacy of Glucosamine Hydrochloride far exceeds that of Glucosamine Sulfate. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) soothes irritated nerve endings, increases circulation, nourishes articular cartilage and is essential to synovial fluid by providing inflammationmodulating properties & additional lubrication TMG (trimethylglycine hydrochloride), also known as anhydrous betaine, is best found in plants and is used in the conversion of homocysteine to methionine, therefore important for a healthy cardiovascular system. Research on TMG supports its ability to protect the liver and raise Sadenosylmethionine (SAM-e) levels. Hyperberry formula: berries, such as blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and cranberries provide the widest possible ay of beneficial powerful antioxidants that protect our cells from reactions with free radicals.

late season trail work in the past, even hosted an IMBA workshop mid-November, but we have never attempted trail work once it has snowed, it just didn`t seem possible,” Rick lamented. Not only would the work not be completed this year but the grant deadline meant the funding would be reduced. Enter Pierre Lambert. Declaring that it could be done, “you know

I will finish anything I start’, he picked up his pulaski and MacLeod, donned gaiters and purchased a light set. Working through the evening during the week and then on weekends, Pierre was true to his word. “C`est bon, but I don’t think we’ll be doing this again,” a bemused Rick declared. Thus ended the 2013 cycling season, project complete. Thanks Pierre!

hen Golden Cycling Club (GCC) Director Rick Seward sat down to write the final report for the Western Diversification grant he was faced with a difficult decision. At the time it was late October and the first snowfalls appeared to have closed the window on any trail building possibilities. The grant was intended to improve five sections of trail in the Moonraker system that had either fallen into neglect or were plagued by water issues and one section, the Toilet Bowl, remained incomplete. If the Toilet Bowel is not complete neither is the project, putting funds in jeopardy. It was in November 2012 that an opportunity presented itself by way of an infrastructure improvement program through Western Diversification and an application for $10,000 was made and subsequently approved. The grant was complicated by the

8

requirement of fund-matching and early in 2013 the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations agreed to fund the other $10,000. It was decided that the two longest sections would be given to Brady Starr and Evan Fishlock from Starr Trail Solutions while the three smaller sections would be handled in-house by GCC. Brady and Evan were quick off the mark and completed the Dam Bypass trail and the North Star connector this spring. Meanwhile the Cedar Snag boardwalk was finished, thanks in large part to the timely assistance of Alpine Helicopters who were able to fly in all the needed materials. The Tequila reroute was started and everything appeared to be on schedule to complete the grant project by early fall. Fast forward to the end of October, the Tequila reroute was now complete but the Toilet Bowl was still, well, the Toilet Bowl. “We`ve done

What’s in My Soup?

Ravens are not Crows

Sanne van der Ros

N

othing beats the goodness of a bowl of homemade soup. The steaming heat and wonderful aroma drift up to tickle my face with delight after playing a fun game of shinny on the neighbourhood rink. When gazing into my bowl, I watched the swirls in my soup transform into wafting whirls of air. My soup started taking on a translucent form. Upon further examination, I noticed small objects protruding out of this air. Then reality set in as I took a deep breath to enjoy the sweet soup smells, causing me to cough a little. It occurred to me that the bowl I was looking into represents my home. The bowl is a basin, similar to our Golden airshed, rimmed by the breathtaking Purcell, Selkirk, and Rocky Mountains. It is filled with air that is not always fresh. Obvious contributors to Golden’s airshed soup came to mind: idling semitrucks during road closures along the highway corridor, helicopter traffic, the train yard with its idling engines, smoking chimneys in the neighbourhood, nearby slash burning, and each and every small car and truck. That’s enough pollution to make a messy airshed soup! Looking into the translucent turmoil in my bowl, I realize that all the ingredients we put into our airshed bowl can form a messy soup of chemicals. When cold heavy air flows down from the surrounding peaks into our valley at night, or when there is a temperature inversion, pollutants can stay trapped at ground level. This can cause serious health

FYI: A group of crows is called a murder, and a group of ravens is called an unkindness.

problems such as asthma, heart disease, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. That’s not why I moved to the mountains! One serious concern in Golden is particulate matter (PM), the tiny solids suspended in the air we breathe. These culprits are released into our air through incomplete combustion of wood, diesel or gasoline, and enter deep into our lung’s alveoli causing lung and heart problems and delivering harmful chemicals to the blood stream. We really need to care for our air! For individuals, a big message is to burn our fires hot with plenty of air flow in a properly installed stove with a clean chimney using dry wood. A smoldering fire creates less heat and more hazardous blue-grey smoke. Replacing an old, inefficient stove with a certified stove, saves us money by burning a third less wood and cuts smoke emissions by as much as 70%. We should avoid idling our vehicles, especially in school zones where children are susceptible to air pollutants emitted from our exhaust pipes. The Town of Golden’s bylaw against open burning of backyard waste also helps keep down the smoke. By paying attention to our airshed, we can increase the quality of life for our whole community. nstead of seeking the heat like many other birds (and some humans), the Common raven (Corvus corax) sticks around Golden throughout winter. This large, adaptable, black bird can live practically anywhere and eat anything. They can be seen playing in the air currents above town in lifelong pairs, making deep croaking sounds.

oes your front yard have an elaborate snowman army and impenetrable snow forts burly enough to resist the incoming Aussie and Scandinavian invasion? Is your backyard plastered with more snow angels than the lord almighty himself asked you to make? Are you out of fantastic ideas for what to do with all the glorious snow that’s blanketed the lawn for a month now? If it’s small you’re S.O.L. But if you’ve got huge tracks of land my crystal ball sees a skating rink in your future. We’re lucky enough in Golden to have a winter climate that rarely climbs above the enchanted threshold where ice turns to water—if you make ice, it will remain in that state for your skating enjoyment. The process is no more time consuming than building that snowman army you wasted November on and you don’t need much: time, two forms of liquid and plywood boards if you’d like to get fancy. Make sure the whole area is nice and flat. If hockey is going to be your main focus, it’ll be nice to have boards to keep pucks from

10

shattering nearby windows. To keep costs to a minimum, take some measurements to buy just enough plywood so that the total of the long sides will get you all the way around—less a few feet for an opening, so this isn’t a rink only Patrick Swayze can access. Buy enough straight metal brackets to attach all these suckers together, and go spend your lumber and hardware budget on beer. Call a couple friends and crack some beers before stabbing the plywood into the snow, straight as an arrow. Start at a corner and attach them together as you go so they’ll remain standing as you finish encircling the rink. If joyful circular skating patterns are the goal here, you probably don’t need boards, maybe just make some snow banks to mark the edge of the rink and cushion children who stray from the ice at lightning speed. While you’re saving money on supplies, you’ll still need dozens of beer for you and your friends. Once your perimeter is ready, get ready for fun. You’ve got to pack down all the snow it surrounds

www.TheLocalTownie.ca Read previous issues online

probably one footprint at a time. Before you get teen boy excited, make sure it’s a crispy cold night and it won’t be puking snow on your hard work. Holding a beer with a nice warm mitt, stomp on every square inch until it’s nice and evenly packed as firmly as possible. If you’ve got some sort of yard rolling device you can finish it off with that for a nice even finish. Otherwise, try moving around some spare plywood and throwing down furiously sweet dance moves on it to smooth out the footprints. The final step will be flooding this dance party. Hopefully you have an indoor water source to attach your hose to or had the foresight to properly shut off water to your outdoor tap so that it’s not frozen harder than a beefcake six-pack. Soak the packed snow with water and give it a good day to freeze. As long as you packed tightly enough, the snow should now be ice. You may need to throw down a few coats to make it Gillette smooth before lacing up but you’re pretty damn close to gloating about your very own backyard rink.

Parenting

Christmas Adventures In Parenting: Tales of a Not-so-super, Mostly Just Average Mom Alison Biles

E

very year, as Christmas approaches, I am overwhelmed by the urge to give. Not to my friends, my family, not even to my children; I want to give to the world. Each year, around the beginning of December, I become concerned with those less fortunate than myself. One year when my son Captain Safety was about four years old I spent days trying to convince him that instead of buying each other gifts we should buy a goat for a village in Africa. Another year I toyed with the idea of skipping Christmas dinner, kids in tow and serving dinner to the homeless at a shelter in Calgary. Last year I tried to convince my kids to give up their gifts and instead spend the money at Overwaitea on one massive donation to Golden’s local food bank. They actually agreed to that one, we even made it to the parking lot of the Overwaitea and almost went in until the full realization that it would mean less gifts under the tree hit home for them. Every year my kids respond to my ideas with a resounding no. Year after year, I have been accused by both of them of trying to ruin Christmas. Through teary eyes they have blamed me for taking all of the fun out of the best holiday, for joy sucking and overall ruining everything that they have been looking forward to all year. Of course I have never actually gone through with any of my schemes. I would never force my children into charity or selflessness. That would completely defeat the purpose. I want them to choose to give to others instead of themselves. I want them to buy goats and chickens, send shoeboxes full of school supplies. I want them to feed those who cannot feed themselves. I want them to want to give like I do and to feel that warm fuzzy feeling you get inside when you know you have made a difference for someone. The gift I want to give my kids is generosity. But

this year I have no grand plan, I am all out of ideas. I truly have no idea how to convince them that giving really can be more rewarding than receiving. How, in our culture of consumerism and disposable plastic toys where kids are constantly bombarded with images that equate accumulation with success, does a mother teach her children the intrinsic value of things rather than what they can be exchanged for? More than that how does a mother teach her kids the value of time over money, the value of spending time on others? This year I will not be trying to convince, coerce or reason my kids into any form of generosity. This year I will quietly spend my resources, my time and money on brightening other peoples worlds, my kids worlds, my family’s world, my friends’ worlds and the worlds of complete strangers. This year I will let my kids be bombarded with images of my generosity and also images of the generosity of all the awesome people in our community. Hopefully their gift to me will be seeing their smiles after they choose their own ways to be generous, but if not, maybe next year, or the year after. After all I have all of the time in the world to give to them. I can wait.

Beer Review

A Gentleman’s point of view

Vancouver Island Brewery Hermann’s Dark Lager This beer pours darker than the cola your DD is drinking, but has a nice tan head with some lacing. Smells sweet, with coffee and fresh bread. Tastes of toasted malts and grains, with some coffee and cocoa. Has a pleasantly bitter, nutty finish. This is a delicious, very drinkable beer from VIB. BCL price $12.15 per 6-pack.

• Hunting Sasquatch is illegal in Washington State but since we live in BC, happy hunting. • The last Mammoth is said to have survived and lives in the mountains of the West. • Sir James Hector is still alive and passes through the Kicking Horse area every once and awhile for the fountain of youth that saved him from his kicking horse in 1858. • BC used to incorporate all of the Canadian Rockies until Alberta’s hostile take over of 1901-1903. • The Parson River Monster hibernates over the winter, except during the mating rut in February. • Mount 7 is actually named Beaverhead Peak. • Golden is home to the Church of the Stolen Bell. • There are unconfirmed rumours that a dragon skeleton has been found in the Burgess shale.

Whistler Brewing Lost Lake IPA This is an unfiltered northwest style India Pale Ale, with a delicious hoppy bite of grapefruit and passionfruit. Pours a slightly hazy goldenorange with a large long-lasting fluffy offwhite head and some lacing on the glass. Nice aroma with lots of hops—pine, citrus and resin. Flavour is equal parts malt and hops but finishes with a big, long bitter finish. BCL price $5.75 for a 650ml.

On December 5, The Traverse will host Kelowna’s Stickybuds. Coming off a 24 show European tour last spring that took him through Germany, Austria, the UK and Spain amongst others, he took to Salmo, BC’s renowned Shambhala Music Festival in August where he blew up the Fractal Forest. It was his ninth time playing the festival and he continues to be a fan favourite.

He has also performed at other big name festivals like Glastonbury in the UK and Burning Man in the States. Stickybuds seamlessly blends Funk, Drum ‘n’ Bass, Reggae and Glitch Hop to produce a sound like no other. A veteran performer, he will be sure to bring a high intensity show sure to entertain. Tickets can be found at Society Boardshop for $15. Nine days later Longwalkshortdock will be throwing down at Traverse as well. King) has been in the electronic music scene for well over a decade. King’s musical passion was first sparked by early eighties video games music which led him to record and loop his own samples. This early fascination with music led him to learn a variety of musical instruments, eventually leading to two degrees from Burnaby’s Art Institute in Music Recording and Production. Dave’s first big breakthrough was at Australia’s Soundwave Festival in 2007, where he blew audiences away with his manic performance style and high energy presence

onstage. This same energy was brought to Shambhala in 2009, where he has played annually since. A Longwalkshortdock set will showcase a wide variety of tools, including drum machines, synthesizers, computers, guitars, keyboards, his own vocals and whatever other toys he can get his hands on. His extremely high energy combined with his thumping, genre-bending medleys of a variety of electronic music will have even the most timid of crowds thrashing about on the dance floor. Tickets can be found at Society Boardshop.

Todd Menzies - Golden Sound Festival Society After the success of Golden Sound Festival this past September the decision was made to host a winter version deemed The Winter Block Party. This multi-venue event will take place Saturday February 22 in downtown Golden, spread out among The Golden Taps, Rockwater Grill and Bar and The Riverhouse. The Golden Sound Festival organizers have worked hard to provide a diverse line up for The Winter Block Party including C.R Avery, The Gay Nineties, Miesha and the Spanks, Damn Fools, Bitterweed Draw, Picture the Ocean, Disasterman, Stone Iris, Vinyl Richie and The Gaff as well as local DJ, Mike The Ripper. Set up in similar style as Calgary’s Sled Island, Toronto’s NXNE and

Victoria’s Rifflandia, your Winter Block Party wristband will be your ticket to all three venues to experience the eight great bands and three DJ’s Golden Sound Festival has in store for you. Staggered set times allows you to bounce back and forth between the venues to make sure you are able to catch every act. Each show is subject to capacity, so if you REALLY want to see certain bands get there early enough to make sure you get in. amalgamation of three high level snow sports competitions, the Masters of Snowboarding, the North American-based Freeskiing World Tour and the European-based Freeride World Tour. The event takes place on Mac Daddy face, 500 meters of steep vertical terrain on the south side of Mount Mackenzie’s peak. A panel of judges score runs based on five criteria: line choice, control, fluidity of movement, technique and creativity. Sixty-seven competitors will take to the face this year, making up both the men and women skiing and snowboarding rounds. The event is invite only, with the athletes chosen through a number of Freeride World Qualifying events held around the world. The event takes place out of the RMR bounds, so on-mountain viewing will be limited. Only those with proper backcountry training, full backcountry equipment and adequate knowledge of the area should attempt to view the event in person. ater; it’s so simple yet so powerful. Living in the Columbia-Shuswap, one can’t escape this beautiful reality. Since moving here, I’ve had many peaceful experiences of sitting by mountain lakes feeling the calm of my surroundings. Conversely, I’ve been amazed by the majestic crashing waterfalls and narrow water-eroded gorges. Water flows, shapes and purifies. It can be the mist that settles in the Columbia Valley on an early autumn morning or the ice breaking up and flowing down the Kicking Horse in the spring. Water can be just as powerful when it comes to our health. We all know that water is essential for life but do we stop to think how many ways this simple substance can benefit our health? Hydrotherapy is the use of water in healing; a therapy that is often overlooked due to its pure simplicity. The properties of water are what make it such a versatile healing substance. It stores and transfers heat, it is easily applied, it is basically free and everyone has access to it. Winter is a great time to apply the

principles of hydrotherapy in the treatment and prevention of colds and the flu. One of my favourite home treatments to recommend to clients suffering from a sinus infection is a steam inhalation. Fill a bowl with boiled water, lean over the bowl, create a tent over your head with a towel and breathe deeply for ten minutes. To increase the effect, consider adding a therapeutic essential oil. Lavender has antibacterial properties and is great to help you relax. Eucalyptus aids in opening the nasal passages. Just a drop or two will do! Make sure to keep some tissues handy and be sure not to get too close to the water. Hot steam not only thins mucous and increases circulation of immune cells to the area of the sinuses, but it can burn you too! Steam inhalations are just the beginning. There are as many different types of water treatments as there are water features here in the mountains. So the next time you pass by some water on one of your adventures, let it be a reminder to ask yourself, “If water is powerful enough to move mountains, what can it do to improve my health?”

Local Arts: Becky Kamstra, Sharron Pearson SilverSmithing Sarah Jane Osadetz

In ancient times, silversmithing and metal working were considered menial tasks as were any other mandatory work throughout a community. As mankind evolved, so did the skills and methods of silversmithing. In medieval Europe, artisans started to create an apprenticeship approach to education in which their underlings were mentored. Today, metal smithing is an esteemed profession in Europe and one that can bring a good living to the people who choose to follow their craft. Here in Golden, BC, we have an adventurous, knowledgeable and passionate group of people who follow along in the methods of the European values of mentorship and apprenticeship. Golden is one of the most economic places in Western Canada to learn how to silversmith. Also, the current teachers of the beginner and advanced classes are the second generation of Golden Silversmiths to take the helm to teach, mentor and share their knowledge. Sharon Pearson and Becky Kamstra are the local mentors. As members and on the Board of Directors for Golden Rock & Gem Club, they are excited

to evolve the silversmithing program. Several weekends throughout the winter, they host silversmithing workshops. They introduce a few types of ring making skills – all of which open up doors to developing a style and design that reflect the style of each student. Sharon started silversmithing in 1994 and was always influenced through her upbringing as her father was an avid rock hound. She and her father used to work in his workshop, building pieces together. Now, years later, Sharon makes elaborate filigree work and has evolved into having her work in galleries, still working with rocks, and has had a hand in faceting raw stones into beautiful gemstones to set in jewelry pieces. Becky started smithing silver in the 1980's. She has enjoyed being able to create something that no one else has. As unique as she is, her work speaks for itself. With her attention to detail and her quest to continue learning and explore in her silversmithing work, Becky's style, skills and design has evolved and grown. Both artists have gifted many of their pieces

to friends and family over the years and have also gone on to make commissioned pieces for clients – mostly through word of mouth. Both learned from Ken Piggo in his basement where many of the avid Rock and Gem members learned. From there, the program grew and so did the acquisition of many tools. All of the proceeds from the classes go back into buying supplies for the club. Sharon and Becky have carried on the tradition of volunteering their time and contributing to the arts' and culture of Golden through the generosity of their time and their passion for metal smithing and mentoring. As the ladies say now every weekend, “Acetyline, coffee and flux in the morning.... now THAT'S how you start a Saturday.” Join the Golden Silversmiths if you are interested in growing your knowledge or exploring the unknown world of working with metal. Workshops are located at the College of the Rockies for an entire weekend. Contact the Rock & Gem Club directly for more information on their weekend workshops: 250 344 2010 (evenings)

Gear by Rookie: Ski Touring Bindings

Sean (Rookie) Nyilassy | Collin Wallace Photo - Rider Isaac Kamink North Star Glacier

I

still remember buying my first pair of touring bindings in 2004; a set of Silveretta 300s. I bought them used at the University of Calgary Outdoor Program Centre’s fall gear sale mounted on a pair of rental Elan skinny skis including skins for $30, with the soul purpose of destroying them on a mid-October trip to the Jumbo cabin. Mission accomplished. I’ve come a long way since then having just ordered my first pair of Dynafits—I fully expect my right leg to bend my brain over my left knee and spank it for not making this decision earlier. During the ten years in between, I’ve experienced Alpine Trekkers, Fritschi Freerides, Marker Dukes and even a pair of Naxos for a few runs. The ski touring bindings of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s were primarily hilarious cable contraptions and heavy-ass plate systems so clumsy you might as well breakdance wearing watermelons on your feet and Cornish hens on your hands. In 1987 Dynafit revolutionized the backcountry with their ‘tech’ bindings. Ski boots must have a tech fitting to be compatible with these bindings but they allow only the toe of the boot to remain in the binding in walk mode. This meant no more heavy binding heel-pieces and plates or cables attached to your boot, allowing owners to go faster and farther than ever before. The basic principle behind Dynafit design has gone relatively unchanged through today and they still dominate the race circuit. Back in the day schnoodling and powder 8s were all the rage, and these tech bindings were up to the job. As big mountain a.k.a. freeride a.k.a. new school a.k.a. step-aside-Warren-Miller skiing became popular in the ’90s,

backcountry skiers demanded more performance a.k.a. stompability from their bindings. Following some other manufacturers’ failed attempts, BCA’s Alpine Trekkers were a simple solution of the decade that click into your alpine bindings, allowing you to tour up very gingerly and awkwardly, throw them in your pack and shred down as you would in whatever binding you want. Fritschi made the first real attempt to match alpine binding performance replacing the typical sloppy, heavy plate with a strong but lightweight aluminium alloy bar in 1995. Although the large rise from ski to boot made it not quite feel like an alpine binding, it was pretty good becoming more popular than punch on prom night and inspired a couple similar models. The release of the Marker Duke in 2006 marked the closest match to alpine binding performance so far. It brought skiers closer to their skis on a wider platform than Fritshci at the cost of some extra weight on your feet. The 16-DIN rating made the Duke the goto binding for skiers with Rob Ford’s mass, aggression and drug habits. Their success has instigated competition from other brands and the introduction of a 12-DIN Dynafit with a ski-stiffening plate to broaden their market.

Day Dream Dumped On Matty Chappy

During the summer of 2010 all the hippie chicks dumped their men, so I moved to Golden. I had only dreamt of living in a ski town, getting my first season’s pass and shredding with new found friends. I had imagined it as if in the movies. I met young vibrant people all participating in well planned out creative endeavors. Being introduced to the Amuse Troupe and the boys from Stellar Radio Choir made me feel like I was in the creative corner of ski culture. Fashion shows and community-based bar nights to help support local artists appeared to be non-stop. Even snow-covered Cedar Lake appeared to be an open canvas where magnificent creatures painted the landscape with their tracks. After settling down for a few of months the snow began to fly! With high anticipation for my first run I waited with my heart pumping in a surprisingly short line. Upon entering the gondola I was stunned at the opportunity of friendship. Having lived in northern B.C. for the past five years I hadn’t been exposed to such open people; they

Looking into the future, expect manufacturers’ goals to be combining lightweight with alpine performance. New for this year, ask somebody rich or famous how the 16-DIN Dynafit Beast feels. Hell, maybe one day splitboard binding technology will catch up, then the randonee world better watch out for Nigel Danger Fisher. In the meantime, see you out there my man.

even had all of their teeth! After learning how to say goodbye in German from a new friend I dropped into Crystal Bowl for the first time; finally finding out what champagne powder is all about. I caved large and fast over to the trees and started dogging them like they were zombies. Fast quick turns and then, out on nowhere comes a bare bottom. I swerve to the left to avoid a bearded fellow whom felt it was a good idea to take a dump in the middle of the treed section of the bowl. The daydreams I had of ski towns being beautiful majestic places came to a smelly end. My passing did not appear to affect the snow scat maker in the least. Yes, during my first run on that blue bird day my opinion of ski culture changed just a little bit. I felt as if I had seen behind the scenes of all the ski movies ever made, parties and powder it was not. Though Golden is a creative culture with community-based thinkers and hard workers I will forever be looking out for the people who poop in the trees.

A Long Sleep, a Short Life Part 2: Kosmos Nautes Susan Leenhouts

T

he sun was warm on my face, the sky clear, a deep blue, I wore a bright yellow jumpsuit; everything seemed to glow with vividness, my parent’s smiles, my sister’s hugs, the huge silver spaceship above us in its sling, all the noises, it felt like it was being written not only into my memory, but into my bones. I was like a sponge of sorts, absorbing every tiny moment, the photographer taking one last photo of my family and I, the last hugs and kisses from them, the walk into the cosmodrome, the long elevator ride up to the cockpit, I waved to my family as they turned into ants far below. The elevator stopped at a platform and there were a few techs up here, one gave me my flight helmet, another set up my O² tank, then the door opened. I went into the ship—it faced the sky, its round nose pointed to my future—out. I pulled myself up into the pilot’s chair, strapped the webbing, now I was parallel to the ground, all I

could see was the blue and for a moment imagined I would never see this blue again.

the mind plays such tricks, some cruel- as the countdown seemed to slow down time.

I read over the console, everything was in the green, once I pressed a few more buttons on my big, black chair, mission control came over my suit’s helmet and the loudspeakers outside. I was ready, trained years for this moment, trips to Jupiter, Saturn, then Neptune, out there in the dark night, the sun so small, surrounded by alien landscapes but I found beauty in all of them.

I could see my fellow astronauts, in the same flight suits, faces steeled with anticipation.

There. Ready.

The rail gun launched me into the stratosphere—like a bullet- and the G’s pushed me back into the seat. I heard the rockets roar to life below me and the blue sky faded, became black night, and I was free.

Now was the real journey, the real test.

Where would I go? What would I see?

I knew my sister’s face to be red with tears of sadness and joy.

Is there other life out there?

And me, I could not verbalize the vastness of outer space; I held the belief it was infinite. “5.”

My dad would hold them both, to keep his tears at bay.

I clenched my hands, excited, almost restless, to be out there, a true explorer of the unknown.

I

magine living in a sexless marriage and not necessarily being content with it but not doing anything about it either. A new friend recently explained to me that she’s been married to her husband for five odd years and has only been intimate with him on three different occasions-that’s not even once a year; can you say anniversary sex even? I’m pretty sure my jaw dropped to the floor and my reaction consisted of funny faces and WTF moments. My very first question was “why?” followed with an “are you ok with that?” She explained to me that though it wasn’t her ideal situation, being that she is a sexual person and would love to be intimate with her husband, there are other perks to her relationship such as friendship, stability, and comfort. My take on it was that she is somewhat ‘kept’ and rather than discuss ways to fix the problem with her partner, she just boils in her own thoughts on a constant basis, goes on vacation and vents out her frustrations to this friendly face. She also told me that her husband knows her thoughts toward their intimacy issues and explained to her that it’s something he can’t give her but she’s perfectly welcome to be sexual with someone else as long as he didn’t have to know about it. I find this odd and wonder what his deal is and why she knowingly married a man who could never fulfill her desires. Money or not, I could never live without being intimate with the guy I chose to spend my life with. I hate to admit it but I have gotten full-blown angry with a person for either not giving it

26

to me or not giving it to me in a manner that gets the job done; my marriage would crumble pretty quickly if this were my story—this could never be my story, obviously. They say that money can’t buy you happiness but maybe “they” are wrong. Money can buy you sex so if your partner is telling you he’s not interested, why not just pay someone to be interested? I’m only half serious for those of you who have angered reading that sentence; I would neither buy nor sell sex, I’m merely providing one option. I’ve also never been married and though I don’t condone divorce over one obstacle in a marriage, it’s a pretty big obstacle in my eyes. I would just have never gone through with it in the first place. I may also have no idea what I’m talking about, but that seems unlikely as I usually have a good grasp on the rights and wrongs of relationships: having sex on a daily or at least weekly basis, right. Having sex never, totally wrong! A lot of relationships start out based on sexual chemistry, what do you have if you haven’t got that? And please don’t say friendship or partnership, I understand if the sex goes but I can’t fathom the idea of it not being present in the first place. Seeing as no one responded to my ad for a friend, I can’t imagine anyone wants to tell me of the sexless marriage they’re living in. Does anyone have any inspiration for my next article? I’m thinking of discussing v-cards, any thoughts? Get at me at bettyrides@localtownie.com
