Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 312 returned from the USS Theodore Roosevelt, Sep. 2. The Checkerboards spent a month aboard the aircraft carrier as part of the Composite Unit Exercise in

preparation for a deployment. “The COM2EX was our entire Carrier Strike Group coming together and training for various mission sets we may encounter on our deployment,” said Maj. Thomas Bolen, the executive officer for VMFA-312. “While we were on the Roosevelt,

we did a broad spectrum of F/A-18 Hornet operations. We practiced air to air, air to surface and close air support exercises to prepare ourselves for the next deployment.”

MCAS Beaufort Leadership weighs in on how to improve Family Readiness Program Story and photos by: Cpl. Ashley Phillips Press Chief

A team from Headquarters Marine Corps visited Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort to gather information from focus groups regarding the Unit, Personal and Family Readiness Program, Aug. 29-30. The representatives and specialists from HQMC spent the two days aboard the air station meeting with various groups to collect data to see how relevant the UPFRP is today and how to improve it. “We don’t know what direction we are going to take the UPFRP yet since we aren’t done with the focus groups,” said Shandra Hardy, a programs specialist with HQMC. “We have already visited several installations and several left to visit.” The focus groups visited at each installation are the Family Readiness Officers, junior Marines, spouses, and the commanding officers and sergeants major. At the air station, the entire first day was spent with the FROs of the air station and Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. Family Readiness Officers introduce themselves during a focus group lead by a team of program specialists from Headquarters Marine Corps aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Aug. 30. The program specialists collected data about the efficiency and relevancy of the UPFRP to consolidate and decide how to improve the program. The FROs are from both MCAS Beaufort and Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.

Chaplain’s Corner

Thoughts on Thinking

By Chaplain Chad Haan Chaplain MAG-31

Last week while driving home from work I found myself thinking about a call that I had just made. Why I did I make that call to that particular person at that particular time? Upon reflection, I realized the primary reason I made that call was because I had seen a pickup truck with concrete tools on it for flat work, and the friend who I called does flat work. However, this only raised other questions. Why did I notice that particular truck among the hundreds of vehicles I passed? How many stop lights did we both have to hit just right for the driver of that truck to pass me on that small stretch of road? Why did I think to call that particular friend when I have four other friends who also do the same kind of work? When I called my friend, I understood why - he said that he had just been thinking about calling me to tell me about a health concern with his son. The fact that these events occurred is significant. Yet what is of greater significance are the thoughts I had while reflecting on these events. While many of us have likely had similar experiences, how often do we stop to think about what these experiences reveal regarding what we believe about God, or how we understand God? Why don’t we see God’s hand at work more often in our lives? And, what would the payoff be if we did see God at work more often in our lives? Philippians 2:13 says, “for it is God who works

in you both to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.” Reflecting on this verse in relation to this experience, I would say that God caused me to notice that particular truck and to think of that particular friend, and while not acting for me, He also gave me the impetus to take the action of making the call. If God cares enough to number all the hairs on our heads it certainly is not a stretch to think that He cares about, and is in control of, everything in our lives - even down to the smallest details. Unfortunately, the biggest reason that we don’t see God’s hand at work more often in our lives is that we don’t ask for it in prayer. We don’t ask God to open our eyes or to help us see things through His eyes, or more importantly - to think with His purposes in mind. We need to ask ourselves the question: What purpose might God have with this particular idea or thought, or in this particular situation in my life? The payoff for seeing God at work more often in our lives is that we will be even more encouraged to see, and to diligently seek what God is going to do in our lives next, and be a part of it. We will know

MCAS Beaufort is in Tropical Cyclone Condition V for 2017 Atlantic Hurricane season until November 30. This year is predicted to be an above normal season due to weak or non-existent El Nino. NOAA is predicting 14-19 named storms, which includes Franklin. 5-9 will become Hurricanes. 2-5 will become major Hurricanes. Monitor the latest forecasts and briefings from the National Weather Service in order to prepare your family for any extreme weather affecting our area or along your route during vacation travels. Be Prepared! weather.gov with certainty that it is God who is actively directing our lives – even our thoughts. Second, because of our increased awareness of what God is doing we will be an even greater blessing in the lives of those around us, blessing and encouraging our neighbors and friends. Third, as we read our scriptures and ask God to reveal His purposes in our lives we will know Him more fully, and in doing so, we will glorify God and therefore fulfill the “good purpose” of God for humanity. Finally, the answer to the first question of the Westminster Catechism states that the chief end of humanity is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. By being more aware of, and celebrating God’s orchestration of the moments in our days, we are able to truly glorify God and enjoy Him now, and forever.

MCAS Beaufort Starbase:

19 years of providing S.T.E.M. education for local schools Story and photos by: Cpl. Ashley Phillips Press Chief

Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort’s Starbase program will be turning 19 years old this year. Starbase is a Department of Defense funded program dedicated to fostering a passion for studying science, technology, engineering, and math (S.T.E.M.) in elementary school students. “Starbase began when a teacher decided she wanted something different for her students,” said Savanah French, the director of Starbase at MCAS Beaufort. “She brought her class here to the air station to get them interested in what the Marines do here.” According to French, that teacher worked with several Marines on the air station to create a program. After a year of running the program the DoD adopted Starbase. Since 1999 the program has been run aboard the air station. It has even spread across the DoD to hundreds of other locations. “Part of the reason we focus on S.T.E.M. is due to a trend of students, as they grow older, not pursuing these very essential studies,” said French. “We also are able to show them exam-

ples of Marines with successful careers in fields involving S.T.E.M., whether they are turning wrenches or piloting an aircraft. There are a lot of jobs open in those fields. The hope is that we are pushing them towards these fields of study.” According to the Starbase website, the program focuses on fifth grade students, students who live in inner cities or rural locations, those who are at a socioeconomic disadvantaged, low in academic performance or have a disability. From June to August, a different class of about 40 students from local schools will come on base and begin learning the hands on and interactive curriculum. “This is a program that really makes a difference,” said French. “I can’t tell you how much joy it brings me to be able to teach these students. Not only are they learning things very advanced for their age, but they are learning, through hands on activities, to love school. They get so excited and we hope they carry that on into their future.”

“We spent more time with the FROs because they are the ones facilitating the program,” said Hardy. “The FROs and program trainers were asked the same questions, but it’s different to hear from them versus the receiving side of the UPFRP.” For the second day the junior Marines, spouses and the COs and sergeants major were each given two hours for their focus group to give feedback. For every session there was a data analyst recording all the responses. “We begin with basic questions asking what the groups know about the program and what they think the program is for,” said Hardy. “As the discussion progresses we start to ask about how relevant and effective the program currently is and what can be done to improve it.” At the end of the installations tour, the team from HQMC will consolidate the data to see if there are trends across the board. Each focus group provides a unique perspective on how the program is run and its efficiency. “The Marine Corps Order for the UPFRP has been in the process of being written for the past five years,” said Hardy. “Now we are at the point that in order to get it signed off we need a thorough analyzation of how to make it the best program for meeting the needs of the Marines and their families. Every group we collected data from is very passionate about the program because taking care of Marines and their families is critical to mission accomplishment.”

A carrier strike group is an operational formation of the Navy. It is composed of nearly 7,500 personnel, an aircraft carrier, at least one cruiser, a destroyer squadron of at least two destroyers and/ or frigates, and a carrier air wing of 65 to 70 aircraft. VMFA-312 is one of two Hornet squadrons in the Marine Corps to

operate in a CSG. To operate in a CSG, VMFA-312 must execute Field Carrier Landing Practice to stay current with procedures of landing on an air craft carrier. “We tend to do a string of FCLP’s before we head out to the Roosevelt,” said Capt. John Taliaferro the unit information officer for the Checkerboards. “The amount of FCLPs we do is probably one of the only things that separates us and the other Hornet squadrons here. actually landing on a ship. The FCLPs give you the basics but when you are landing on a ship you have to take wind and the speed of the ship into account. This is my first duty station. It is exciting to be one of two squadrons in the Marine Corps that get to deploy on aircraft carriers.” After finishing the COM2EX, the Checkerboards have only a few pre-deployment exercises until they are ready for their up-coming deployment. “After everything we learned and re-

hearsed during the COM2EX, I am more than confident in this squadron’s abilities no matter where we are,” said Bolen. “We have been training and preparing little by little for this. We went from FCLPs to week-long exercises leading up to the COM2EX and ultimately the deployment. All I can say is when we depart Beaufort for the that CSG it’s going to be game on. We will have a job to do and we will do it to the best of our abilities.”

Marine Forces Reserve Answer Texas’ Call Story by: Pfc. Samantha Schwoch Marine Corps Forces Reserves

Marines hand supplies to a family in Orange, Texas, Sept. 3. Hurricane Harvey landed in eastern Texas on Aug. 25, 2017, flooding thousands of homes and displaced over 30,000 people. The Marines are with the 14th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, and Marine Wing Support Squadron 473, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Forces Reserve.

TEXAS—U.S. Marines with 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion and 14th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve, came together in wake of Hurricane Harvey to conduct search and rescue missions and provide disaster relief to effected areas of Texas and Louisiana, Aug. 28-Sept. 3, 2017. Hurricane Harvey was a storm of record breaking proportions, dropping an estimated 27 trillion gallons of water or 51 inches of rain in areas of both Texas and Louisiana. U.S. Marines supported lead federal agencies and worked closely with state and local officials to conduct search and rescue missions. With flood waters rising to record proportion, the Marines’ amphibious capabilities, which make them unique amongst the services, allowed them to swiftly rescue residents in distress. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve is exceptional in its

ability to respond quickly to any call and to flexibly conduct operations through air, logistics and ground elements. For example, the Marines rapidly mobilized and used their amphibious assault vehicles designed to transport Marines from ship to shore for rescuing approximately 327 residents from flood affected areas. “We were called up to come out and provide humanitarian assistance to the local population,” said Gunnery Sgt. Alan Daigle, a platoon sergeant with 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve. “We got the call to come over to east Texas, into Beaumont, Lumberton and Port Arthur areas. So we’ve been doing humanitarian missions, going out with the swift water rescue survival team and finding areas that traditional military vehicles cannot get in and out of. The amphibious assault vehicles help us get to those areas.” Marines from 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion and Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 773 rescued almost 1,300 locals and countless animals from the affected areas. “We got our first mission to Clearview, Texas, to help the local authorities there to go to these neighborhoods that were unreached,” said Sgt.

Brad L. Coats, a reconnaissance Marine with 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve. “They had us going house to house via Zodiac, which is our combat rubber rafts, checking on the individuals that were in these houses to see if they wanted to be rescued or if they needed supplies.” The units from Marine Forces Reserve focused on life-saving efforts throughout south east Texas, where many of the Marines are from. Charlie Company, 4th AAV Bn is located in Galveston, Texas and 4th Reconnaissance Bn, in San Antonio. The Texas based Marines have longstanding relationships in the surrounding communities where they live and work. “We have a personal responsibility to pull together because it’s like our home is being invaded in a way,” said Staff Sgt. Travis Hough, a reconnaissance Marine with 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th MarDiv, MARFORRES. “Since all of us are from San Antonio and the surrounding areas essentially it’s more than just a duty but more of a personal responsibility to help out our fellow communities, it’s the best part about having that special bond together, especially in Texas.”
