Celebrating the Holidays Marine Corps Style

The Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island Band participates in the annual Christmas parade on Dec. 2, 2017 in downtown Beaufort. The band played traditional Christmas music during the parade to celebrate the coming of the holiday season. The Tri-command particpates in the event as a way to foster cohesion with the local community. Story by Cpl. Terry Haynes III

The holiday season is here, with festivities such as Christmas shopping, celebrations, concerts and family gatherings. Marines and Sailors aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort are getting ready for the most wonderful time of the year. During the holiday season, MCAS Beaufort will partake in several events celebrating the season ranging from a Jingle Bell 5k, a Christmas parade and tree lighting on Laurel Bay as well as the annual Senior Tea. The Senior Tea is put together to honor and give back to the Beaufort area senior citizen community. The MCAS Beaufort Spouses Club organizes the event with the help of Marine volunteers from the air station. “The holidays are great time to give back to the community at large,” said Lance Cpl. Ashanti Washington, a graphic design Marine with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron and an escort for the upcoming Senior Tea. “This event is the greatest example of that in my opinion. If it was not for the support of our local community we wouldn’t be able to operate see holidays page 4

24th MEU, USS Iwo Jima celebrate Thanksgiving at sea Story and photos by Cpl. Margaret Gale

Marines and Sailors with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit celebrate Thanksgiving aboard USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) Nov. 22, 2018. Food services provided a full thanksgiving meal and ceremonial cake cutting for the holiday. While friends and family are preparing their Thanksgiving meals at home in the United States, Marine mess men with the 24th MEU and food service attendants with USS Iwo Jima began their food preparation for roughly 2,000 Marines and Sailors aboard the ship at 8 p.m. the evening prior to Thanksgiving by seasoning the turkeys. Preparation rolled over to the morning hours of Thanksgiving, until 10 a.m. “What is extremely important to us in the military is that we have Marines and the Sailors aboard the ship and today gives them a chance to come together,” said Chief David Hargress, the leading culinary specialist aboard USS Iwo Jima. “The way we have the mess deck set up gives everyone a chance to sit around each other and interact with different Sailors and Marines and share their Thanksgiving stories, while we give them that ‘at home’ feel. We know that people can’t be home with their families for the holiday so it is extremely important to us to be able to give them that see thanksgiving page 7

A Marine escorts a guest prior to the commencement of the Senior Citizen’s Tea aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Dec. 11, 2017. The event, hosted by the MCAS Beaufort Officers’ Spouses’ Club, was held to honor and give back to the local senior citizen community. This year will mark the 49th iteration of the annual event.

HOLIDAY continued from page 1

as effectively as we are able to now.” The Marine Corps is known for many things throughout history, from the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima to John Glenn orbiting the Earth. But this time of the year, the Marine Corps is known for its trademark toy drive, “Toys for Tots”. Maj. Bill Hendricks founded the charitable event in Los Angeles, California in 1947 at the suggestion of his wife Diane. 5,000 toys were collected and distributed to less fortunate children during a campaign before Christmas of that year and the rest has been history. According to their website, the primary goal of Marine Toys for Tots is, through the gift of a new toy, help bring the joy of Christmas and send a message of hope to America’s less fortunate children. You can visit their website at www.toysfortots.org for more information.

One of the not so merry aspects of this time of the year is the fact that traveling during the holidays holds a higher risk of having an accident and Marine and Sailors are no exception. Driver fatigue, road terrain, weather conditions and more drivers on the road all add to the risk of having an accident during this time. “Wherever you are this holiday season, we need you to be safe. Make smart decisions. Look out for each other,” wrote Gen. Robert Neller, the Commandant of the Marine Corps during his Holiday Safety message in 2017. “From the time you earned the title “Marine” you became part of a legacy. You are now contributing to that legacy and making it your own. Happy Holidays and Semper Fidelis.”

U.S. Marines and Iwakuni locals participated in the Kuragake Castle Festival in Kuga, Iwakuni City, Japan, Nov. 18. Iwakuni City held the 29th annual Kuragake Castle Festival and Samurai Parade to commemorate the battle of faith in 1555. Five U.S. Marines from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni and Japanese locals participated in the parade dressed in samurai costumes. To prepare for “battle” service members and locals were brought to a school gym to dress and transform into samurai warriors. Their uniforms contained a samurai helmet, chest plate, plated legs and sleeves, and a sword and shield. “The feeling is like when you become a Marine,” said U.S. Marine Corps Pfc. Michael Lam, administrative specialist with Headquarters & Headquarters Squadron. “My favorite part was putting on the armor, it was motivating, we were really enjoying ourselves.” After the ceremony the Marines walked around, ate food and posed for photos with local festival participants. “The festival was great,” said Lam. “The food was amazing also, we ate a lot of Kushi and took a lot of photos. It’s not every day that you see people walking around in samurai armor, especially foreigners.” Lam says that Marines should try to go out and enjoy the volunteer opportunities provided to them from base organizations. “It’s an opportunity you may never have again. It’s important to utilize all the events that you can. Now that I’ve been to two, it’s been amazing to participate in these new experiences,” said Lam.

Jacob Lindsey, a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threat specialist with the 24th MEU. “However, instead of looking down on the situation, I think celebrating it with the Marines I work with is like spending time with my second family. Thanksgiving to me is about giving and being thankful for all of the selflessness that is given day in and day out. Most importantly, it is about everyone coming together under a single roof, understanding everyone’s differences, and being thankful that we have an opportunity to celebrate those differences.”
