A Marine speaks to a representative from Friends of Caroline Hospice, a non-profit, free, in-home hospice provider, at a volunteer fair aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Jan. 24. Many of the non-profit organizations within the local community rely on the volunteer efforts of Tri-command Marines. The fair gave Marines an opportunity to meet representatives from organizations they can volunteer with. The Marines are stationed aboard MCAS Beaufort.

The volunteer coordinator program held a volunteer fair for service members aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Jan. 24. The fair hosted several volunteer organizations within the Tri-command area to give Marines an introduction to ways they can be involved in the local

community. Volunteering in the local community is an essential aspect of Marines’ careers, personal development, and growth. Not only does it make Marines competitive for promotions, but it also integrates them into a community that can support them, build networking opportunities and fill in résumé gaps. “The military community i

Chaplain’s Corner

“Welcome Aboard Chaplain Wilburn” By Joseph E. Wilburn , LCDR, CHC, USN Command Chaplain, MCAS Beaufort

“Welcome Aboard Chaplain Wilburn” was the message I first saw prominently displayed on the chapel marquee when I first arrived at the MCAS Beaufort Chapel. Soon, I am sure the marquee will be changed to read, “Fair Winds and Following Seas Chaplain Holiman”. Most of you know Chaplain Holiman as the Command Chaplain of MCAS Beaufort. But how many, if any of you, know Chaplain Joe Wilburn? It has been a theory of mine, over the course of my Navy career that a part of the reason why we are successful as a military is that commands constantly change much like living organisms. As personnel arrive, each one of us changes our commands by bringing forth fresh perspectives and priorities to the positions we fill. All of which have some impact on how the command is defined. Just how the command changes with the change of personnel directly reflects the answer to the question, “Who are you”? Henceforth, I felt it would only be appropriate for me to try to give you some insight into who I am in this first article that I am writing as the new command chaplain. My wife, Anne, and I met in junior high school and we became high school sweethearts after spending a few years as close friends. The third most important thing that I learned from the military was that I did not want to continue the adventure in the

Navy without her. In a letter written from me, while a recruit at Recruit Training Center San Diego, I asked her to be my wife. She accepted and we were married on November 11th, 1984; the weekend I graduated boot camp. It has been an adventure. She and I became disciples of Jesus Christ while assigned at our first command; Fighter Squadron Seventy-Four (VGF 74) at NAS Oceana. During that time, I completed two deployments maintaining avionics and weapons systems of the F14 Tomcat on board the USS Saratoga. Not long after my first deployment began, our air wing (CAG 17), was completing missions against Libya in April 1986. Little did I realize, that most of my adult life would be spent serving our country in defense against terrorism. I left the Navy in 1990 after my initial enlistment to answer a call to the ministry. I never thought I would return to the Navy or any other form of the military. Much to my surprise and following 14 years as a civilian, bi-vocational pastor; I returned to the Navy in January of 2005 to become a Chaplain. By the summer of 2005, I was serving boots on the ground with the Seabees of NMCB-5 in Iraq. I have completed three deployments as a Chaplain; once again with the Seabees to Camp Arifjan and once on board the USS Cole. This assignment to MCAS Beaufort begins my third assignment as a Chaplain with the USMC. Previously I served with MCI-WEST at Camp Pendleton and

then with the Command Element of Marine Expeditionary Unit 11. I mentioned above about the third important thing that I learned from the military. This first point was one I learned from my father before I ever joined the military. My father was a retired Army warrant officer who grew up living the life of Steinbeck’s novel, The Grapes of Wrath. I loved hearing the stories of his childhood and how poor people really can be. He never wanted me to forget that his first new set of clothes was issued to him by the Army. As a teenager, I realized what he really wanted me to remember was that the life he lived was the result of an opportunity he found as a soldier. What aptly describes the point my father wanted me to learn and the first thing I learned about the military can be drawn from Steinbeck’s words, “Up ahead they’s a thousan’ lives we might live, but when it comes it’ll on’y be one”. My father learned how to make the opportunities afforded to him by the army to work for him. Who I am? I am simply a sailor who wants to fulfill the second most important thing I have learned from the military. I had my doubts about my success in the military until I went to boot camp. It was there I learned this second point; I can do far more than what I ever thought I could. The opportunity is before each of us to choose how we live this military life. It is my desire to fulfill my opportunity by helping you fulfil your opportunity.

NMCRS provides 113 years of financial assistance for Marines, sailors, families Members of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society celebrated the organization’s birthday aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Jan. 23. Story and photos by: Lance Cpl. Ashley Phillips Staff Writer

This year marks the NMCRS’s 113th year of providing financial, educational, and need-based assistance to active-duty or retired Marines, sailors, and their family members. Col. Peter Buck, the commanding officer of MCAS Beaufort, his wife, Pamela Buck, and Sgt. Maj. Derrick Mays, the sergeant major of MCAS Beaufort attended the celebration. They held a small cake cutting, with their director, Pam Mentzer cutting the first piece. “This is something we celebrate because it is so true to the character of the Marine Corps,” said Pam Mentzer, the director of the NMCRS office aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. “The Marine Corps is grounded in tradition so we have our own cake cutting ceremony and our overall mission is that we take care of our own. We are celebrating the fact that

we’ve been able to provide assistance for over a hundred years now.” The NMCRS officially began January 23, 1904, with funds from the 1903 Army-Navy football game held in Franklin Field, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Society was started whenseveral naval officers, spouses and civilian friends saw the need to provide assistance for spouses and widows of Marines and sailors. “I view it as paying it forward,” said Mentzer. “There was a time before I began volunteering and my husband was deployed when I needed assistance from the Society. I actually heard about it from my neighbor at the time. I went in and the society did everything they could for me, and now here I am years later doing the same thing. I started volunteering in 1980.” The society offers interest free loans and grants for emergency and unexpected financial needs, free in-home visits by a registered nurse for in-

There are also thrift shops, quick assist loans for active duty Marines and sailors, and financial assistance for food, shelter, and transportation during natural disaster evacuations and recovery. “The NMCRS is one of the top rated charities with 97% of every dollar going back into the Society to provide the assistance we offer,” said Mentzer. “We are certified by Four Star Charity, Guide Star Exchange and Charity Watch. The NMCRS has a long history of taking care of our own, and it is something we will continue to do. such an important facet of our community for three reasons,” said LaNelle Fabin, the events manager of the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce. “They are a huge contributor to the local economy; they add life and character to our social atmosphere and without their volunteering efforts the events and festivals we hold just wouldn’t be possible.” The fair featured representatives from the BRCC, Friends of Caroline Hospice, Hunting Island State Park, and several others. The event was coordinated and organized by the volunteer coordinators from both MCAS Beaufort and Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. “When I contacted the various volunteer organizations that we currently work with their responses were immediate,” said Paula Dyson, the volunteer program coordinator with MCAS Beaufort. “They absolutely love having Marines work with them. They know they are hard workers and really add a lot to the events.” Most of the events Marines volunteer at not only give back to the local community but also provide inexpensive family ac-

tivities. There are ways for every family member to get involved no matter what their age is. The events also give the Marines, sailors, and their families an opportunity to meet other local families. “Having that small town feeling and being able to know your neighbors out in town is so important,” said Sgt. James Dye, an aviation ordnance technician with Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 533. “I always encourage my junior Marines to get out, get involved, and volunteer. It’s also very important to the community. These events are planned with the expectation of Marines being able to volunteer; without us showing up how we do they just wouldn’t happen.” This was the first of four volunteer fairs that will be held in the upcoming year. Two of the fairs will be held at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. Mini-Marines and the Beaufort Water Festival are two of the upcoming events Marines can volunteer at. To find out more information or other up coming events, sign up for the volunteer event distribution list by emailing Paula Dyson at paula.h.dyson@usmc-mccs.org.
