Finding Answers to Your Prayers By Luke Wilson, LT, CHC, USN Deputy Chaplain, MAG-31

We learn from the Bible that if we lack wisdom, we should ask of God, who gives to all liberally (James 1:5). We are also taught to ask and it shall be given, to seek and we shall find, and to knock and it shall be opened unto us (Matthew 7:7; Luke 11:9). And yet many of us often struggle to find answers to our prayers. We may even wonder sometimes if God actually hears us when we pray. It is important for us to remember that prayer is not just one-way communication from a person to God. Prayer is really two-way communication; prayer is a conversation between a person and God. Not only can we speak to God, but God can also speak to us. Understanding how God speaks to us is a learning process. God speaks to us in many different ways, often in ways we can hear only if we are really listening. To better hear God’s voice in our lives, sometimes we need to turn down the volume of

the worldly noise around us. If we ignore spiritual promptings, we may notice and recognize them less until we cannot hear them at all. It is important for us to learn to listen to the promptings God gives us and to be willing to follow them. Another reason we sometimes do not recognize God’s voice in our lives is because answers to our prayers do not always come to us directly and in the way we might expect. God wants us to study and think in addition to praying for guidance as we seek answers to personal questions and concerns in our lives. God will hear and answer our prayers, but the answer may sometimes come through Scripture or through the wisdom of inspired family members and friends. A 20th century religious leader once said, “God does notice us, and He watches over us. But it is usually through another person that He meets our needs. Therefore, it is vital that we serve each other.” We each have a responsibility to serve and to be sensitive to the needs of others. We can all look for

opportunities to reach out and bless those around us. A current religious leader has taught, “Often, the answer to our prayer does not come while we’re on our knees but while we’re on our feet serving the Lord and serving those around us.” This leader has also said, “By becoming the answer to someone’s prayer, we often find the answer to our own.” Serving others strengthens us spiritually and also opens the windows of heaven. I want each of you to know that God loves you and hears your prayers. God can speak to you in your life in unique ways and provide peace and understanding as you seek His guidance and strive to follow Him. My hope for all of us is that we will not only pray, but also listen for the answer. And I hope that we will not only focus on finding answers for ourselves, but also look for ways to serve others and to help those around us find the answers and blessings they are seeking. I know that as we strive to bless others, we will be blessed as well.

Motor vehicle accidents rise in Beaufort area Story and photos by: Lance Cpl. Benjamin McDonald Staff Writer

The Beaufort area has had a rise in vehicle accidents in 2016. The Burton Fire District responded to 293 motor vehicle accidents in 2016 and 14 vehicle accidents in 2017. According to the BFD, Of the 293 accidents of 2016, 49 of the accidents occurred on Trask Parkway, another 49 occurring on Parris Island Gateway, and eight occurred on Laurel Bay Rd. Burton fire officials state while only eight of those motor vehicle accidents occurred on Laurel Bay road, those accidents were the most intense and dramatic for firefighters. “The amount of accidents we have had in Beaufort and around the air station is getting bad,” said Darran Vaughn, the fire chief of Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Fire and emergency services. “These accidents are affecting the Marines and the civilians all around Beaufort. These people have lives to live and accidents not only affect others personally but interfere with people’s schedules and set them back.” Over half of the 8 accidents on Laurel Bay road were motor cycle related according to BFD. Out of those accidents, two cyclists were killed and two more required to be evacuated by a helicopter due to serious injuries. “People need to remember their basic driver’s instruction that was learned and keep with the safety laws enforced to keep travelers safe,” said Vaughn. “Paying attention is a simple variable that can lead to a lot of car accidents, if people payed more attention a good half of the accidents that occurred last year could have been avoided.” Even though the New Year just started, the Burton Fire Department and MCAS Beaufort Fire and Emergency Services have been busy. Within a 24-hour period, the BFD responded to five motor vehicle accidents. Two of the accidents resulted in one of the cars rolling over and trapping the occupants according to the BFD. “2017 concerns me and the amount of accidents that will occur this year,” said Vaughn. “We are already at 14 accidents and it is only the sixth day of the

I hope the number of accidents will be significantly less by the end of 2017, unlike 2016. As long as people stay aware of their surroundings and remember to wear a seat belt or a hel-

ment,” said Maj. Bradley Rothman a pilot with VMFA-115. “We got to travel around the Pacific and train with other countries. Although the scenery was nice and the area was a good place to train, it is really good to be home.” All Marine Aircraft Group 31 personnel available lined the flight line and welcomed home the pilots of VMFA115. The line started where the jets started taxiing off the runway and ended in front of the pilot’s family and friends. “Every squadron is present to help support for VMFA-115,” said Col. Robert Cooper, the commanding officer of MAG-31. “The idea was for a few members of each squadron to show the support of the MAG, but everyone wanted to be a part of it and help welcome back the Silver Eagles. All the members of the six squadrons showed up to line the flight line. These boys worked hard on their deployment and we are just here to welcome them back.” During a deployment, communication home is limited. Marines of VMFA-115 had limited communication with their friends and families at home, but were still able to talk to them. “We were deployed of course it was hard to talk to loved ones,” said Maj. Casey Benefield, a pilot with VMFA115. “There were points during the deployment where we were able to talk to our friends and families and it made things feel normal for a second, like we weren’t deployed away from everyone.” As the remainder of the squadron returned to MCAS Beaufort, VMFA-115 transitioned back into a training mind-set. The squadron will take the training learned while on the UDP and continuously train aboard the air station for their next deployment.
