Shotgun training prepares MALS-31 for ITX Story and photos by: Lance Cpl. Ashley Phillips Staff Writer Marines with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 31 trained and qualified with Benelli M1014 semi-automatic shotguns aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Sept. 26. The Marines received training on the Benelli M1014 to prepare for the upcoming Integrated Training Exercise aboard Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif. “These Marines needed the M1014 qualification prior to the ITX to perform their security duties,”said retired Gunnery Sgt. Frederick Kalawor, the training

chief with the Provost Marshal’s Office. “It’s a part of their responsibilities just like with any weapon. They need to know how to function it and engage with it.” The select Marines signed out shotguns from the armory aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and learned how to break down, clean and perform a functions check on the weapons before heading to MCRD Parris Island to train on the range. “Most of these Marines, myself included, have never worked with these shotguns,” said Lance Cpl. Fightertown welcomes home VMFA-122 Story and photos by: Lance Cpl. Ashley Phillips Staff Writer Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122 aircraft returned to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort after a six-month deployment to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan as part of the Unit Deployment Program Sept. 16-24. The first pilot returned Sept. 23 and was greeted by his family on the flightline. The support of the family members was vital for the personnel during their training and the homecoming. “It’s been a long deployment for the Marines,” said Sarhi Wiggins, the family readiness officer with VMFA-122.

MCAS Beaufort Sailor recognized, awarded for saving Marine’s life

“It’s been a little rough for the spouses, but the spouses handled it amazingly. We made sure they had resources they needed.” According to Wiggins, the Marines’ connection to their families keeps them grounded and helps contribute to mission readiness. Just as it’s important for a Marine to train their body to complete any task, it is also equally important to ensure that Marines are mentally and emotionally fit to fight. “It’s good to be able to know what is going on at home,” said Maj. Luke Borgan, a quality assurance officer with VMFAsee

Did you know... September 30, 1945: Marines of III Amphibious Corps, commanded by Major General Keller E. Rockey, began landing in North China to assist the Chinese Nationalist government in accepting the surrender of Japanese forces and repatriating Japanese soldiers and civilians

National Hispanic Heritage Month 2016 Story and by: Lance Cpl. Ashley Phillips and Pfc. Benjamin McDonald Staff Writer Every year Americans recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. In observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Department of Defene has chosen a theme for this year; Hispanic Americans: embracing, enriching, and enabling America. The number of past and present Hispanic Marines who infuse the Marine Corps with their customs and traditions continues to grow each year. It’s important to acknowledge the contribution and diversity that strengthens our institution and nation Hispanic-Americans have an integral role in society, ranging from the music industry, contemporary literature, Congress, the Executive Branch of government, education, and the labor movement. All commanders are encouraged to create programs and promote participation in National Hispanic Heritage Month observances. National Hispanic Heritage awareness started as a week-long observance in 1968 under President

Lyndon Johnson. President Ronald Reagan expanded the observance to a 30 day period, enacted into law Aug. 17 1988. The 30 day period falls between key independence days for five Latin-American countries, Mexico, and Chile. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua’s Independence Days are Sept.15. Mexican Independence Day is Sept.16 and Chile’s Independence Day is Sept. 18. Columbus Day also falls between this 30-day period, on Oct. 12. According to Marineparents.com, Marines with a Hispanic heritage account for 12% of the enlisted personnel, making up the largest percentage of minority groups in the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps is set apart in how it embraces tradition and history. Hispanic and Hispanic-American Marines have a long, proud place in this legacy. The first Hispanic Marine to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor was Private France Silva, during the Boxer Rebellion. Silva continued to stand his post for a month and a half, despite being seriously wounded. Upholding the Marine Corps warrior ethos, Silva repelled the enemy. The most recent Hispanic Marine

to receive the Medal of Honor was Miguel Keith. During the Vietnam War, after Keith’s platoon was ambushed by a large enemy force, Keith ensured vital defensive positions were secure. While completely exposed, Keith advanced with a machine gun to suppress enemy attackers, mortally wounding three of the attackers before he was knocked to the ground by a grenade. Despite severe injuries and blood loss, Keith again charged 25 enemy soldiers, killing four more and scattering the others. Keith was then mortally wounded. Keith upheld the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and ultimately, his actions led to the success of his platoon. National Hispanic Month is an opportunity to celebrate the diversity that characterizes our nation and the contributions of Hispanic Marines to the Marine Corps. The Marine Corps is strengthened by diversity and the innovation that diversity breeds. Throughout the rest of National Hispanic Heritage Month the Marine Corps will continue to observe the integral segment of the Corps that is Hispanic Marines by honoring our past, surpassing our present, and leading our future.

Effective June 1, MCAS Beaufort will be in Tropical Cyclone Condition V for 2016 Atlantic Hurricane season until November 30. This year is predicted to be a normal season. NOAA is predicting 1016 named storms, which includes Alex. 4-8 will become Hurricanes. 1-4 will become major Hurricanes. Be Prepared!

Legends at Parris Island presented with International Golf Eco-label Courtesy Story

The Legends Golf Course at Parris Island has become the first worldwide military installation golf facility to gain the GEO Certified® eco-label, the global mark for sustainable golf. Uniquely located within the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Parris Island, Beaufort, South Carolina, The Legends Golf Course facility is truly multifunctional, welcoming visitors of all abilities to play golf or to enjoy the numerous nature trails, fishing spots and important historical sites it offers. “Parris Island has made Marines for over 100 years, having a positive role as an important part of the local community. It’s also our role and responsibility to ensure we preserve such a historic institution and the surrounding community through deliberate, sustainable action” said Brig. Gen. Austin E. Renforth, command general, MCRD Parris Island and Eastern Recruiting Region. “I’m proud to have The Legends Golf Course set the example as the first military golf course to earn GEO certification. We welcome visitors and members of the local community, alongside our service members and their families to play at The Legends Golf Course” GEO Certified® clubs are recognized for their commitment to the protection of nature, efficient use

of resources and providing positive community value. Clubs awarded with the certificate have achieved the voluntary industry standard for sustainability, assured by membership of ISEAL Alliance, and are each assessed by aqualified independent verifier. GEO Certified® is a highly regarded, credible recognition sought by clubs throughout the world. “I’m so impressed by the strategic initiatives which The Legends Course has in place for ongoing continued improvement to enhance habitat for wildlife, reduce turf inputs, promote community engagement, and track resource use,” said Teresa Wade, independent GEO Certified® assessor for The Legends at Parris Island and founder of local sustainability not-for-profit Experience Green. “Amongst the highlights for nature is the course’s Bluebird trail with 10 purpose-built bird boxes which, in two years, has achieved 90% occupancy. The 45 acres of native woodland is home to threatened species including Fox Squirrels, Wood Storks, Bald Eagles, Ospreys and American Alligators. The 11 onsite ponds provide natural habitat and also collect and store rainwater which is used for 100% of course irrigation. Energy efficiency is prioritized within the design and construction of a new clubhouse that is expected to open in 2018. In taking care of its Marines and sailors, Unit Golf

Clinics provide four sessions of course instruction for $1 each to active duty military, and each receives their own set of pre-owned clubs upon completion. Furthermore, education displays around the course, and its public nature trails, inform visitors of the important history of the site throughout the centuries, as a Native American camp, a French stronghold and the capital of Spanish Florida.” The Legends at Parris Island is also part of a wider sustainability in golf initiative in the Hilton Head Island area, joining 14 other local golf clubs working together on a collective sustainability in golf initiative. “We are proud to collaborate with community initiatives that benefit our facility, but also the Lowcountry destination that is known for golf and prioritizing care of the natural environment” said Andy Hinson, Director of Golf at The Legends. “The staff at The Legends has shown a deep understanding and sincere passion for both the environmental and social value of the facility” continued Ms. Wade, “As active members of the Hilton Head Island sustainability in golf collaboration, and the investment in becoming GEO Certified®, they have demonstrated their commitment to grow this positive value; I look forward to seeing their continued progress along their sustainability journey.”

MALS-31. “It’s definetly not something you get to do everyday. It’s like getting to be part of a select team. Very few Marines get to use these weapons. It’s vey cool and a lot of fun” The qualification for the M1014 is a two part evaluation. First, the Marines went through a full safety brief on the nomanclature, how to load and unload, and the safety features. After a familiarization exercise, the Marines went through the qualification shoot movement. “They don’t have the same range that a rifle does,” said Kalawor. “It has more penetration power. It’s a more volatile weapon. That’s why they need to know how to handle it properly.” During the upcoming ITX, the selected Marines will be standing security detail for ordnance. Shotguns are used at fixed security posts for their stopping power. The ITX is a biennial training event aboard Twentynine Palms. The mission is for Marines to train in realistic conditions comprised of five ranges, which will increase the proficiency as a Marine Air Ground Task Force and prepare

them for world wide deployment. “This training is to prepare Marines for deployment in hostile environments,” said Flores. “The Marines will be performing their job functions in a secluded environment. This training will better help them understand what is most important to make their mission successful, when and if the time comes, that they have to deploy to a secluded area, where common luxuries are not so common.” The Marines will spend five weeks at Twentynine Palms, training as a MAGTAF element. The MAGTAF element is a part of what makes the Marine Corps so efficient. The twelve Marines training on the M1014 are a part of making sure every Marine understands their role in the mission and can proficiently accomplish their tasks. “The Benelli is a very effective weapon, but in the hands of someone who has no idea how to use it, it is useless and unsafe” said Duncan. “Give them some training and confidence in the weapon, and then tell them to go out and destroy the enemy.”

122. “Sometimes you are able to help your spouse back home with issues that come up .” Throughout the deployment, the Marines had access to phones and computers. The family readiness officer also organized events for the spouses to meet and interact. “We call it normalizing,” said Wiggins. “It’s an opportunity for the spouses to talk with each other and realize that what they are going through is normal. Every family has similar experiences while their Marine is on deployment.” The events included ice cream socials, support group talk sessions and movie nights for the children and adults. Before the main body of Marines returned, the spouses got together and prepared some care packages for the single Marines returning to the barracks. “We made what we call rack packs,” said Wiggins. “It was a package of homemade treats, candies and snacks. We also

put together a separate package of necessities like soap, tooth paste, and laundry detergent, just to get the Marines on their feet.” The squadron also had a family dinner for the parents who traveled to meet their Marine. Fourteen parents came to the dinner and were able to share with each other about their experiences. “That connection to your family and loved ones is what builds up a Marine ,” said Wiggins. “It does so much for the morale of the Marines. I think it’s very important for mission readiness.” Ensuring that the Marines and their families are healthy and happy ensures that each Marine is mentally ready to overcome challenges and support the mission of the Marine Corps.
