Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 115 departed Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort April 9-10 in support of combat operations overseas. “We are headed overseas as part of a combat deployment. For some of us, this isn’t our first deployment to this region so we know what has to get done,” said a pilot with VMFA-115. “We can operate smoothly and efficiently to accomplish our mission while over there.” Over the past months, the squadron has been working longer hours to prepare not only the aircraft, but also their minds for the fast-paced tempo of a deployment. “Being deployed means perfectly executing our duties but in a foreign land,” said an air-framer with VMFA-115. “We won’t have the rest of Marine Aircraft Group 31to help us if we need it. Instead,

we will be working with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12 to accomplish our mission. Usually while deployed, our shifts change and operational tempo changes to better suit the mission we have to accomplish.” The squadron was given the chance to spend time with their families the day of their departure. The United Services Organization provided food for the Marines, Sailors and their families. “It’s nice to have the chance to spend some time with my family before I leave,” said the pilot. “Even though we are the ones leaving for the deployment, our families have to work hard to make sure everything is still okay at home. Deployments can be very taxing on our families and I am grateful for my wife Photo by Cpl. Benjamin McDonald to handle everything so gracefully. Kids Fest comes to Beaufort Story by Lance Cpl. Terry Haynes III

Marines and Sailors of the Tri-command participated in the 22nd annual Kids Fest in Beaufort, S.C. April 7. Kids Fest is held to celebrate the month of the military child with the local community and to raise awareness for child abuse prevention month. “This event is a partnership between the Marine Corps and the community. We held it out in town so we could help spread more awareness for why this month is important, “said Megan Grabowski, a prevention and education specialist with the Family Advocacy Program. “Military members are also community members so it’s crucial that we recognize that bond and help highlight its importance.” The festival was sponsored by organizations in the Marine Corps as well as the community. Marine Wing Support Detachment 31 brought several of their vehicles to the event so kids could get a glimpse of Marine Corps equipment. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources had an interactive booth where kids could go “fishing” while learning more about the different animals and plants that are native to the state. Helping run the event with MCCS were Navy and Marine Corps volunteers from across the Tri-command. The Photo by Lance Cpl. RAF celebrates 100 years of service

Photo by Lance Cpl. Erin Ramsay

Members of the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, and U.S. Marines celebrated the 100th anniversary of the RAF’s formation with a mess night aboard Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort March 23. The mess night was also held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of 617 Squadron. In attendance to the mess night was the leadership of Marine Aircraft Group 31, Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501, 617 Squadron, and 207 Squadron. Story by Cpl. Benjamin McDonald

Service members with the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, and U.S. Marines celebrated the 100th anniversary of the RAF aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, March 23. The celebration was held at the Officer’s Club aboard the air station. The leadership of Marine Aircraft Group 31, Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501, UK 617 Squadron and UK 207 Squadron were all in attendance of the celebration. “Friday night we were honored to celebrated the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Airforce and the 75th anniversary of the forming of the Dambusters,” said Jamie, a Flight Lieutenant in the RAF. “VMFAT-501 had been so welcoming to us and letting us attend their mess events. This was an amazing opportunity to invite them to one of ours and help us celebrate this historic time for the RAF.” During the mess night, the guests heard from decedents of the first members of 617 Squadron and Air Vice Marshal Gerry Mayhew, the commanding officer of No. 1 Group, RAF. “Our mess night was very pleasant, from the lovely staff at the Officer’s Club to the string quartet which played for us throughout the night,” said Jamie.

“Even though the actual anniversary of the RAF’s formation is April 1, different RAF units will be celebrating throughout the entire year. For example, there will be a large-scale fly-over in London in July. This fly-over will be made of fixed wing aircraft from the first years of the RAF’s formation to the newest aircraft the RAF have to offer as well as several types of helicopters.” Since its inception in 1943, 617 Squadron has owned unique mission sets and brings new capabilities to the RAF. Going into its 75th year, the Dambusters are continuing its tradition of introducing new technology and preparing the RAF for today’s conflicts. “When the Dambusters first stood up 75-years ago, its mission was just that: to destroy German dams in World War II,” said Jamie. “617 Squadron was a one of a kind squadron that had to bring new technology and tactics to the fight to accomplish its mission. Being a pilot in this squadron 75-years later, I am honored to continue that tradition. The Dambusters will be the first operational F-35B Lightning II squadron in the UK. Once again bringing that new technology and capabilities to the RAF and I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of that.”

much.” During the weeks leading up to VMFA-115’s departure, the Silver Eagles worked with the rest of Marine Aircraft Group 31 to prepare the aircraft for this deployment. “Working with our
