‘Eggstravaganza’ brings Tri-command families together

Marine Corps Community Services held its annual ‘Eggstravaganza’ aboard Laurel Bay, March 31. The family oriented event was held to bring the families of the Tri-command together and foster unit cohesion. The event also served to inform families about the services the youth center offers, such as
summer camp and after school care. “This is my favorite event that I’ve volunteered for since I got to the air station,” said Lance Cpl. Jadon Carroll, an administrative clerk with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. “I love helping out and decorating to create this awesome atmosphere. The Marine Corps is observing Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention month throughout the month of April, focusing on the theme, “Protecting Our People Protects Our Mission.” All across the Marine Corps, installations will raise awareness to prevent sexual assault in accordance with Marine Administrative Message 075/18. “In order for our Marines to accomplish the mission they have to be whole in body, spirit, and mind,” said Gunnery Sgt. James McCrohan, a Uniformed Victim Advocate for MCAS Beaufort. “Protecting our Marines and creating a culture of respect and integrity is paramount. The goal this month is to raise awareness see

The month of April is a Department of Defense recognized observance of Sexual Assualt Awareness and Prevention. “Individual Marines need to be aware of the fact that sexual assault is the fault of the attacker and never the victim,” said Gunnery Sgt. James McCrohan, a Uniformed Victim Advocate with MCAS Beaufort. “It is also the fault of the bystander who sees something wrong and doesn’t act. This month is just a reminder that you need to take care of the Marines next to you and have a plan. It doesn’t matter where you are or who you are with, you need to protect yourself, your Marines, and know what resources are available to you.”

only as families but as Marines is awesome.” It is often believed that the name Easter comes from a figure called ‘Eastre’ who was celebrated as the goddess of spring by natives of Northern Europe. According to some sources, the Easter Bunny first arrived in America in the 1700s with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and brought a tradition of an egg-laying rabbit. The children made nests in which this creature could lay its colored eggs. “We were pleasantly surprised at the turn out we had for today’s event,” said Tamara Mock, the assistant manager of the Laurel Bay Youth Center. “The Eggstravaganza really shows how close this community is. All of these Marines and Sailors coming out here to make this event possible is just one example of how much we rely on one another.” The youth center was adorned in Easter themed deco-
rations. In the gym, there were bounce houses, Easter basket decorating stations, as well as a section where people could get their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny. The main event was the Easter egg hunt, which was held at the playground. Participants were split up into different groups by age ranging from 1 to 12 and looked for Easter eggs hidden throughout the play area of the youth center. In between groups of children, Marine volunteers would hide the eggs and candy. “I’m very glad we decided to come out for the ‘Eggstravaganza’ today,” said Kim Kelly, a parent of one of the participants. “We are pretty far from home, so it’s nice being able to go somewhere and have a way to celebrate the holiday. MCCS has really outdone themselves this time with everything they’ve provided today and we’re thankful for all of the support they offer.”

and educate Marines on the programs and resources in place.” According to MARADMIN 075/18, this theme emphasizes every service member, regardless of rank, can encourage behaviors that foster a climate of dignity and respect, and in doing so, help ensure our readiness to complete the mission. It is also a way to raise awareness regarding the progress that has been made and the programs available. “This month the air station has actively raised awareness and supported SAAPM by hosting awareness walks, setting up informational campaigns and providing classes,” said McCrohan. “This isn’t just a month long observance though. UVA’s, Civilian Victim Advocates, Sexual Response Coordinators and the DOD Safe Helpline are available and the DOD Safe Helpline is available worldwide, 24/7. There are other events that go on month to month such as wearing a certain color for awareness or various runs, walks and sporting events. There are informational booths and posters posted all around base to educate Marines about the programs and types of reporting.” SAAPM is an opportunity to highlight Marine Corps Sexual Assault Prevention and Response progress and ensure our momentum continues. Since the April 2016 SAAPM, the SAPR Program has marked several significant achievements. However, progress is not victory and we must continue the fight against sexual assault.

Marine Corps leaders are working diligently to set command climates that are non-permissive of sexual assault, retaliation-free and encourage reporting. Our commanders, Sexual Assault Response Coordinators, SAPR Victim Advocates, medical providers, counselors, and Victims’ Legal Counsel provide responsive, sensitive, and timely support for victims of sexual assault. Our investigative agencies and judge advocates ensure each Unrestricted Report of sexual assault properly advances through the military justice process. Blasting into the future: VMFA-122 jets forward during its first official F-35B flight

MARINE CORPS AIR STATION YUMA, Ariz. – It was like a scene from Top Gun as pilots marched out to the flight line to mount the metal beast known as the F-35B Lightning II. Pilots entered their cockpits, started the engines and prepared for takeoff. As the final tests were completed, the jets taxied out, gained speed and took to the sky as history was made. Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122, “The Flying Leathernecks,” conducted their first flight operations in the F-35B Lightning II aboard Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona, March 29. This marked the end of the first phase in the transition from the legacy F/A-18C Hornet squadron to an F-35B squadron. “This was a critical moment for us because it got the ball rolling to have a fully operational squadron,” said Lt. Col. John P. Price, the commanding officer of VMFA-122. VMFA-122, originally based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina, arrived at MCAS Yuma in October 2017. “It highlights the flexibility and agility that we have inside the Marine Corps to accomplish the mission,” said Price. “We have a lot of great Marines and Sailors here from Yuma and all over the Marine Corps. It’s truly impressive how quickly it was put together.” There were various tests and procedures that the Flying Leathernecks needed to conduct and pass just to get to this stage of their transition, including the assumption of command and posting of the sergeant major. “Starting over, all of our programs have to be rebuilt and reestablished here on MCAS Yuma with a whole new group of people,” said Maj. John Dirk, the executive officer of VMFA-122. “This is the culmination of that first part and going forward we get to maintain and improve them so we can make the squadron have full combat capabilities.” The commencement of flight operations marked the successful transition of yet another Marine Corps squadron. “It’s validation of all the work we’ve done, and we finally got over that hurdle that was keeping us from finally becoming fully functional,” said Price. Completion is on the horizon for VMFA-122 and the “Flying Leathernecks” are speeding toward it at jet speed.
