Marines observe National Vietnam War Veterans Day Story By: Cpl. Benjamin McDonald

T

he Marine Corps honored Vietnam veterans during National Vietnam War Veterans Day March 29. The holiday started as a regional observance on either March 29 or March 30 through a patchwork of state resolutions since 1973. In 2012, it was named a national holiday by Presidential Order and signed into law under the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 by President Donald Trump. “This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War,” said Maj. Gen. Vincent A. Coglianese, the commanding general of Marine Corps Installations Command. “In recognition of the their valor and sacrifices, I encourage the members of Marine Corps Installations Command to salute our brave Vietnam veterans who, in service to our Nation and in defense of liberty, fought gallantly against the spread of communism and defended the freedom of the Vietnamese people. It is imperative that we remember the more than 58,000 whose names are memorialized on the black granite wall in our nation’s capital for having borne the heaviest cost of war. We must also pay tribute to the brave patriots who suffered as prisoners of war and the 1,253 heroes who have not yet returned to American soil.”

This past January 31 marked the 50th Anniversary of the start of the Battle of Hue City. North Vietnamese troops captured most of the city at the start of the surprise offensive and Marines had to fight house-to-house and street-to-street to drive the enemy back. During three weeks of intense fighting, 142 Marines were killed and another 857 were wounded. Three battalions consisting of fewer than 2,500 Marines attacked and defeated more than 10,000 entrenched enemy troops in the city. Over 9,000,000 military personnel served on active duty during the Vietnam War. Out of more than 3,400 Medals of Honor awarded to the nation’s service members, 240 of them were awarded during the Vietnam War. In observance to National Vietnam War Veterans Day, the Department of Defense conducted a wreath laying ceremony at the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington D.C. “I ask Commanders to promote awareness across the installations as to the importance of this day and to support Commemoration Ceremonies,” said Coglianese. “Ensure these heroes who served in Vietnam feel welcomed, appreciated and recognized aboard all installations every day, but in particular on their day of March 29. Our relationship with those who have served before us is the foundation to the sustainment of our heritage and traditions.”

Did you know... Date: March 31, 1801

On this date, LtCol Commandant William W. Burrows rode with president Thomas Jefferson to look for “a proper place to fix the Marine Barracks on.” President Jefferson was a personal friend of the Commandant, and deeply interested in the welfare of the Corps and accompanied Burrows on horseback on the morning of 31 March. They chose a square in Southeast Washington, bounded by 8th and 9th streets, and a & I streets, because it lay near the Navy Yard and was within easy marching distance of the Capitol.

UPFRP reboots after 10 years of service

The Unit, Personal and Family Readiness Program is now being reset, as of March 18, changing the civilian staffing and refocusing to provide quality family readiness support to Marines, attached Sailors, and their families. In the reset, the Family Readiness Officers were re-designated as Deployment Readiness Coordinators in operating forces, Recruiting Readiness Coordinators in recruiting commands and Reserve Readiness Coordinators in Marine Forces Reserve commands. The reset will allow the UPFRP to focus on its four core tenets of providing communication, deployment support, readiness and resource support, and volunteer management support.

The Unit, Personal and Family Readiness Program is now being reset, as of March 18, changing the civilian staffing and refocusing to provide quality family readiness support to Marines, Sailors, and their families. In the reset, the Family Readiness Officers were re-designated as Deployment Readiness Coordinators in operating forces, Recruiting Readiness Coordinators in recruiting commands and Reserve Readiness Coordinators in Marine Forces Reserve commands. “For the past ten-years, the UPFRP has supported the families of deployed Marines and Sailors in a time of heightened number of combat operation,” said Ted Crandall the Family Readiness Officer of Marine Aircraft Group 31. “Now that the operational tempo has slowed down, the Marine Corps went into a reset period where it can refocus programs to better support the families of the Marines and Sailors.” The focus of the Deployment Readiness Coordinators with operating forces will focus on deployment support and provide assistance to units, individual Marines, at-

tached Sailors, and families. Every individual and family member within the units will have access to the DRCs. The DRCs will provide communication, deployment support, readiness and resource support, and volunteer management according to the Marine Administrative Message 166/18. The UPFRP reset will enable commanders to focus on the basics of family readiness, while enhancing the role of the small unit leadership. The DRC’s will also be working hand-in-hand with Marine Corps Family Team Building and the rest of Marine Corps Community Services to ensure both Marines and their families continue to get the same support that was given under the old family readiness program. “The core of the UPFRP focused on providing communication, deployment support, readiness and resource support, and volunteer management support to unit Commanders, Marines, attached Sailors, and their Families,” said Crandall. “This reset should allow the program to once again focus on those core tenets. The reset will also encourage self-sufficiency with Courtesy Photo Marines and their families, strengthen the The Unit, Personal and Family Readiness Program is now being reset, as of March small-unit leadership, and strengthen the 18, changing the civilian staffing and refocusing to provide quality family readiness bond between small-unit leaders and MCsupport to Marines, attached Sailors, and their families.
