Marine Division Tactics Course Kicks off Aboard MCAS Beaufort Marine Division Tactics Course, which converts Marine Aircraft Group 31 aviators into masters of fighter aviation tactics, began early January. The four-week course, takes the top tier of Marine F/A-18 pilots and refines their skills in air-to-air warfare. Multiple F-18 Hornet pilots and weapons systems officers will participate in the course and, upon graduation, earn the Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One Qualification and MDT instructor patch. The course is held one to two times a year aboard an east coast or west coast Marine Corps Air Station. It is MCAS Beaufort’s turn to host this prestigious training event. Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Squadron One instructor pilots, from MCAS Yuma, Ariz., instruct and evaluate the experienced aviators. For those who do graduate it provides a stepping-stone to the Marine Corps’ Weapons and Tactics Instructor course. Both MDTC and WTI are fast paced, compact courses that test the top-level pilots and turn them into masters of air-to-air tactics, prepared to meet the needs of the Marine Air Ground Task Force. Because of the sharp learning curve for both courses, the aircrew must be highly proficient with an aptitude far above their peers. MDTC began with a week of academics, which covers complex tactics as well as briefing and debriefing

techniques. The second week of MDTC is where the “Snipers” of Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401 provide adversary support in their F-5 fighters for the MDTC students. VMFT-401 is the Marine Corp’s only adversary squadron and provide dissimilar air combat training, or “red air” to the students of MDTC. After the second week of the air combat maneuvering, the pilots graduate to larger, more complex training events. The exercises start with a section, comprised of two aircraft. Over the final two weeks, they work up to a division flying against 10 adversary aircraft. The course is scheduled to culminate with the final Photo by Cpl. Bolden students breathe life into history Students from Charles F. Bolden Elementary and Middle School participated in the school’s 15th annual Live Wax Museum exhibit on Laurel Bay Jan. 17. The Live Wax Museum is an event where students dress up as influential people from the past and present information on that person’s life and accomplishments. The event was organized by the teachers of the gifted education, creative thinking and advancement via individual determination classes. “This project is a fun way to get familiar with others,” said Travis Summers, a fifth grade student. “I used to be very shy and afraid to present in front of other people, but after I did this Photo by Lance Cpl. Kennedy to famous athletes like Michael Jordan and Hank Aaron. “It’s amazing the creativity and imagination these students showcase every year,” said Kathy S. Holley, the gifted education and creative thinking teacher. “It’s a fun way to bring the students outside of their comfort zones and to make them more organized and confident presenters.” The three month graded assignment consisted of a three to four page report, a presentation board, eight to 10 items that relate to their subject and a memorized monologue they present to those who pass by. “Every year students initially feel that they can’t participate in the event because

they are nervous,” said Erica Belle, the advancement via individual determination teacher.” After they practice reciting their monologues a few times, their fears begin to go away and some even start considering who they want to be next year.” The Wax Museum was broken up into two separate halves. The first half was held during the school day so the rest of the school could participate, while the second half was held in the evening for the parents of the participants in the Wax Museum. “Everyone walks away with something when they leave this event,” said Holley. “The spectators leave after learning a lot of new things about people they may have known little to nothing about, and the students leave with a better understanding of not only the person they studied and acted as but themselves as well.”

Story and photos by Lance Cpl. Stephen Campbell Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan

NAVAL AIR STATION POHANG, SOUTH KOREA — Marines with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12, Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 242 and Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, all based out of Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, conducted hot-pit refueling and hot-reload training on U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18D Hornets at Naval Air Station Pohang, Republic of Korea, Dec. 1213, 2017. The purpose of the training was to show that the Marines could efficiently establish a forward arming and refueling point, or FARP, with supporting entities and conduct hot-pit refueling and hot-reloading evolutions on foreign soil. MALS-12 and VMFA(AW)-242 consisted of aviation ordnance technicians and maintainers to disarm and rearm the aircraft with MK-82 High Explosive General Purpose bombs, while MWSS-171 refueled and communicated with them from the ground. “We don’t do hot loading too much, so this is great,” said U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Kenneth Jacob, an aviation ordnance chief with MALS-12. “I actually took some of my youngest Marines in my shop to a place; where it is cold, miserable and away from home, and to do something completely different from what we were used to doing.” Jacob said this training was invaluable to his Marines because they don’t get the opportunity to conduct hot reloads very often. Similar to hot-pit refueling, hot reloading consists of loading and arming bombs, missiles and ammunition while the aircraft’s engine is still turning, sav-

ing valuable time to continue the mission. If the pilots were to shut down their engines, it would take about two to three hours to do a daily inspection, whereas to refuel and load them with their engines on could put them back on the runway in an hour or less. Before the refueling and loading process starts, the pilots need to have their ordnance disarmed while on the aircraft in a secure location away from the pits to ensure the pilots, aircrew and pits are safe from ordnance being inadvertently expended. As soon as they are de-armed, the aircraft receives fuel, then taxis to the conventional armament loading area to receive additional ordnance, and travels back to the same location to have them re-armed to continue their mission. Jacob said that the Marines excelled in their training and proved that they can perform away from home. “We can work at an expeditionary type airfield for the F-18s and do what we’re supposed to do,” said Jacob. “We completed the mission with everything ready to rock-and-roll.” Jacob also said that conducting hot-pit refueling and hot reloading is a very meticulous process. “I think anything we do as ordnance or even aircraft maintainers, requires attention to detail,” said Jacob. “You have to follow your checklist and all-around be very meticulous. Our warnings, notes and cautions in publications, and our checklists were written for a reason. Engineers wrote up these procedures, and they were written in blood by Marines or sailors before us. We do it for safety to ensure that nobody gets hurt.” Overall the training was a success with each unit working together as a whole to ensure mission
