“I remember when I got the call from my doctor, and as I heard the words, ‘It’s cancer’ that’s all I remember hearing the entire time,” said Dyson. “One of the biggest supports for me was when my sister came from N.Y. to be with me when I first started receiving chemo therapy. She explained to me what would happen, how it would feel, and that it was OK to feel everything that goes with it. There’s now way to describe everything that comes with cancer, the fear, the physical experiences, the chemotherapy, the hair loss, the pain of feeling like a

fight to cancer or fighting cancer. They were lit with a candle inside and served as a way to reflect and honor the names on each one. “This is my first Relay For Life event,” said Dyson. “I have lost several family members to cancer. I don’t know why I didn’t do one before; This is a great event to honor the fight against cancer in so many ways. It not only raises money for cancer research and support, but it is also a chance to really honor the care givers, survivors,

and remember those who we’ve lost to cancer. It is hard to explain how rewarding it is to be involved with a community that understands and supports the struggles that we have all endured.” Dyson was diagnosed with cancer in 2016. After surgery, chemotherapy, and a long road to recovery, she overcame cancer is cancer free now. While receiving chemo therapy, she met Cpl. Joshua Arnett. Arnett participated in the event with Dyson and Team Poppy. “For the past two years I have been going through chemo therapy for cancer

and I’m in remission now,” said Arnett, a personal administrative clerk with Marine Aircraft Group 31. “This is not my first time participating in Relay For Life. It means a lot to be here today. My father also passed away from cancer so I have been doing this event since I was a little kid.” As the teams walked around the course, the goal was to have a member of each of the teams on the course at all times, to symbolize that cancer never sleeps. The DJ played music and held special laps, calling caregivers or survivors to walk all at the same time.

burden. Being here and seeing people who went through the same thing as I did or are currently going through it is hard to describe. There is a whirlwind of emotion. There is happiness, sorrow, and just a strong sense of support and love.” The night ended with a speech given by Dyson. She spoke about first receiving the call with the diagnosis, the assault of emotions, the struggle to recovery and what it means to be where she is today. The final laps of the Relay For Life were walked in darkness, around the path, lit by the luminary candles, while a string

quintet played music. The somber time was held to remember, and to strengthen resolve. The American Cancer Society collected all the funds raised that day to use towards research and support for cancer patients and their families. “You never know who has been affected by or going through cancer treatment,” said Dyson. “I am so grateful for the love and support I received over the last year from family, friends and my co-workers at MCCS. Thank you Team Poppy!”

Train how we fight

By Lance Cpl. Dylan Chagnon 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit

The Marines of Alpha Co., 1st Law Enforcement Battalion conducted firing drills throughout the day and into the night in preparation for their upcoming deployment with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit next June. This training introduced the Marines to the M2 Browning 50 cal. and the M249 SAW machine gun. They also maintained proficiency on the M240B medium machine gun. The drills were conducted from firing positions on the ground as well as mounted positions on Humvees. “In a deployed environment our main mission is convoy operations and security,” said Cpl. Collin Myers, a squad leader with Alpha Co., 1st LE Bn. “In Photo by Lance Cpl. During the night live-fire, the Marines implemented the PVS-17 miniature night sight, a night vision optic, to enhance their ability to provide effective fire support.

Familiarization with operating vehicles and weapons at night is a vital skill when in a deployed environment, said 2nd Lt. Roy Axcellmckeever, a platoon commander for Alpha Co., 1st LE Bn. The Marines’ expertise on multiple weapon systems is important to mission accomplishment and success during deployments. “I think the Marines benefited greatly from this exercise,” said Myers. “They’re leaving here thoroughly seasoned with all three of the weapon systems.”
