EOD holds Demo Day Story and photos by Lance Cpl. Terry Haynes, III Staff writer

Explosive Ordnance Disposal Marines conducted a Demo Day aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Feb. 1. The Demo Day was held so other Marines and Sailors aboard MCAS Beaufort could get a glimpse at what EOD Marines do and how they conduct their day to day operations. Service members learned about the various aspects of the EOD mission and received hands on demonstrations on the different tools and techniques that EOD Marines use daily. “My command was the one that actually recommended I go for the demonstration,” said Lance Cpl. Darius Mason, an administration Marine with Headquarters and Headquarters

Squadron. “I think being able to experience all of the things I did today has definitely opened up a new mindset for me when it comes to a new career field that I may want to pursue in the future.” The need for EOD did not occur until World War II, when allied forces received multiple casualties from previously unexploded ordnance. Due to the advance of technology in bomb making, the first EOD School was then established in Washington, D.C. The Marines and Sailors received classes on the different types of missiles and ballistics that EOD has dealt with over the years as well as what makes the EOD range so unique to MCAS Beaufort. “This is actually a treatment facility which An Explosive Ordnance Disposal Marine gives a lesson to Marines and Sailors during a Demo Day, aboard Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Feb. 1. pares us to survive and win tomorrow’s fights.” MDTC is one of the largest exercises Marine Aircraft Group 31 holds all year. The exercise utilizes all of MAG-31 as well as Marine Fighter Training squadron 401, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 112, and the Airborne Tactical Advantage Company. During the four weeks, the exercise was one of the highest priorities for MAG-31. “Throughout MDTC, class 1-18 we had 104 sorties and roughly 100.2 flight hours,” said Maj. Thomas Lee, MAWTS-1 F/A-18 division head. “In those same four weeks, the MAG accomplished 334 sorties accumulating to 363.5 flight hours. To put things into perspective, the MAG allocated 34% of its sorties and 28% of its flight hours just for MDTC. When we had to re-schedule the culminating exercise to get these students graduated on time, colonel Latt didn’t hesitate to

make it happen. We couldn’t have done this course without the MAG and all of its squadrons. Each squadron sacrificed personnel, aircraft, its time, and training hours to support MDTC and these students.” With their graduation of MDTC, the aircrew are a step closer to becoming the highest qualified Marine Aviators. The graduates will go on to follow on courses, such as WTI, to hone their skills and continue supporting the Marine Air Ground Task Force. “The one thing I talk to my superiors about the most is training for future fights,” said Wellons. “We are facing competitors who think they Aviators and air traffic controllers graduate the Marine Division Tactics Course graduation aboard Marine Corps Air can defeat us in air-to air Station Beaufort, Feb. 2. We are a facility that the EPA is okay with the treatment of various ordnances here, which is something that is very unique and certainly helpful.” At the end of day, the Marines and sailors were given a sheet to grade their instructors that they were assigned at the beginning of the day and were asked questions on what they would’ve wanted to see or things that they could have changed and done differently. “All day I got to play with explosives and then of course at the end was the giant Wall of Fire which is always cool to see,” said Mason. “I have never really done or seen anything like what I have today, I learned more about chemistry and physics today than I probably have in my entire life. I would totally recommend these kinds of events in the future; it’s definitely the best learning experience I’ve had in a long time.”
