This year consider using this simple Bible reading plan to follow along with the Christmas story throughout the Advent season. Take your family on the journey with you too! Discuss what you read, ask questions, reflect on the passages! May it serve you and your family as a way to stay focused on what the season is in fact, all about.

FIRST WEEK Sunday: Isaiah 40:1-5 Monday: Isaiah 52:7-10 Tuesday: Isaiah 40:9-11 Wednesday: Genesis 3:8-15 Thursday: Genesis 15:1-6 Friday: Deuteronomy 18:15-19 Saturday: Psalm 89:1-4

ADVENT

SEASON

SECOND WEEK Sunday: Isaiah 11:1-10 Monday: Zechariah 6:12-13 Tuesday: Micah 5:2-4 Wednesday: Malachi 3:1-6 Thursday: John 1:1-8

Many Christians have long observed the season of Advent. The

Friday: John 1:9-18

name Advent is derived from the Latin word adventus, which

Saturday: Mark 1:1-3

means “arrival.” Advent, which begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, is a time of anticipation and preparation, a

THIRD WEEK

time of celebration of Jesus’ coming. It is a time devoted to

Sunday: Luke 1:5-13

waiting, as believers anticipate the hope that comes in the form

Monday: Luke 1:14-17

of a Savior. It not only looks back to the birth of Christ more

Tuesday: Luke 1:18-25

than 2,000 years earlier, it also remembers Christ’s presence

Wednesday: 1:39-45

here with us now, and it anticipates His promised return.

Thursday: Luke 1:46-56 Friday: Luke 1:57-66

Simply, this season anticipates the arrival of Christ!

Saturday: Luke 1:67-80

It is meant to awaken in us a deep yearning for the Messiah—

FOURTH WEEK

to help us recognize our sinful condition and understand how

Sunday: Isaiah 7:10-14

He comes to free us. More than any other activity, Advent

Monday: Luke 1:26-35

can restore Jesus to the center of the Christmas celebration,

Tuesday: Isaiah 9:2-7

because on each Advent day the birth of Jesus is read, sung

Wednesday: Matthew 1:18-25

and talked about. The whole family can participate and find

Thursday: Luke 2:1-20

the observance meaningful. As our culture strays from the

Friday: Matthew 2:1-2

real message of Christmas, the tradition of Advent can serve

Saturday: Luke 2:21-35

to counter our human tendency to cheapen what is sacred and refocus our attention on Jesus. Christmas is about warmth, joy and family, and more importantly, what God did for us. As we stand on the cusp of Advent, we pray the Holy Spirit will awaken a wonder in all of us, including our kids, for the incredible gift of Emmanuel— God with us. 8 / THEBRIDGEAG.ORG
