COVER STORY REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL

Moya Financial believes that a sustainable environment is an essential foundation for its communities and for future generations. Moya believes we are all responsible for our beautiful planet and we need to act now. With every action – reducing our carbon footprint, repairing, reusing, and recycling – we make a small contribution to the solution.

the much-loved elements of Moya Hive is that members feel like part of the community and join in when Moya’s professional beekeepers come to maintain the hives. Because of the pandemic last year, Moya hosted two virtual workshops. Members also purchased hive products – honey, soap, and candles – with all proceeds going back to the community.

Moya is fully committed to mitigating the negative impact and environmental burden of climate change by proactively reducing the credit union’s environmental impact. The organization keeps this in mind with everything it does, including the products and services it offers. Moya’s mission is to deliver innovative, competitive financial services to help members achieve their financial goals. On top of that, the credit union strives to make a significant contribution to its communities and the environment.

Moya is proud to help make our planet better In 2020 Moya took a big step to reduce its business’s carbon emissions footprint by choosing environmentally responsible electricity from Bullfrog Power, a Spark Power company. Sustainability targets are set as one of the long-term strategic priorities at Moya Financial. By managing the environmental impact of its activities, it will continue to work in harmony with its communities and challenge itself to improve energy efficiency and act responsibly toward the environment where its members live, work, and play.

Bee the change Honeybees play an important role in the environment, and Moya is proud to be part of this element of nature. In 2019, the credit union launched Moya Hive, a honeybee program. Moya members loved the idea: honeybees and beekeeping are essential parts of Slovenian culture and the environment we live in. These incredible little creatures remind us of the importance of working together, and one of

Growing for the future In 2021, Moya Financial partnered with Tree Canada to support Tree Canada’s National Greening Program. The program targets regions across Canada that need reforestation or afforestation (the creation of new forests) as a result of human activity or other causes. In addition to restoring forests and wildlife habitat, trees planted through the National

IMPACT IS MOYA’S IMPERATIVE Greening Program contribute to cleaner air, healthier soil, and cleaner waterways. To kick-start the partnership and Moya’s new Youth Accounts (one of that product’s features is a tree planted on the account holder’s birthday each year), Moya Financial has donated $2,000 toward the program (that’s 400 trees!). Building sustainable partnerships As Moya creates new financial products and services and crafts its marketing promotions to let everyone know about them, the credit union carefully considers who it chooses to partner with. Teaming up means mutual benefits related to sustainability goals. Moya’s partners align with its values and need to be in sync with the credit union’s brand values. No matter what service Moya is looking for, there is almost always an option that is costcompetitive and high quality, but doesn’t come at the planet’s expense. In the past, Moya has included products from companies it believes in, such as Alvéole, EtobiGrow, Sprout Pencils, YETI, Mountain Equipment Coop (MEC), and many more. Moya Financial’s latest promotion reflects these values and is pretty exciting too! When a Moya member invests in a new term deposit, they’ll get a competitive rate plus a chance to win one of three Alpina hiking boot packages. Alpina is a brand of professional hiking boots from Slovenian – a country that knows mountains and lives for hiking! For details, visit MoyaFinancial.ca or call the main branch at 416 255 1742. This article is not intended to provide financial or financial planning advice, please call or email Moya Financial and they will be more than happy to chat with you!

Climate change is on the minds of Canadians and it is a key priority for the government. We recently announced the 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan: Canada’s Next Steps to Clean Air and a Strong Economy. The plan is an ambitious and achievable sector-by-sector approach for Canada to reach its new climate target of cutting emissions by 40 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, and to put us on track toward our goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The Plan includes $9.1 billion in new investments to cut pollution and grow the economy. Here are some of the elements. • Making it easier for Canadians to switch to electric vehicles. We are investing more than $2.9 billion in charging infrastructure, providing financial support to make buying zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) more affordable, supporting clean medium- and heavy-duty transportation projects, and developing a regulated sales mandate so that 100 per cent of new passenger vehicles sold in Canada will be zero emission by 2035, with interim targets of at least 20 per cent by 2026, and at least 60 per cent by 2030. 10

• Greening Canada’s homes and buildings. By investing around $1 billion, we will develop a national net-zero by 2050 buildings plan, the Canada Green Buildings Strategy, work with provinces, territories, and other partners to support the adoption of the highest tier building codes, pilot communityscale retrofits, and facilitate deep energy retrofits for large buildings. • Helping industries to adopt clean technology and transition to net-zero emissions. We are delivering historic investments to enable industries to be clean and competitive and creating greater incentives for clean technologies and fuels, such as carbon capture, utilization, and storage. • Making Canada’s grid even cleaner. We will develop a regulated Clean Electricity Standard, make additional investments of about $850 million in clean energy projects like wind and solar power, and work with provinces and territories, stakeholders, and Indigenous partners to move Canada’s electricity grid to net-zero emissions by 2035 while continuing to ensure that Canadians and businesses have access to reliable, affordable power.

ECONOMY

• Reducing oil and gas emissions. We will continue working closely with provinces and territories, stakeholders, and Indigenous partners to develop an approach to cap oil and gas sector emissions to achieve netzero emissions by 2050, reduce oil and gas methane emissions by at least 75 per cent by 2030, and create good jobs. The plan includes a projected contribution for the oil and gas sector of a 31 per cent reduction from 2005 levels, which is equivalent to 42 per cent from 2019 levels and will guide the government’s work to develop the cap on emissions from the oil and gas sector.

schools, non-profits, Indigenous Peoples, and more to cut pollution and create jobs in communities across the country. • Embracing the power of nature to fight climate change. We will make an additional investment of $780 million to help Canada’s oceans, wetlands, peatlands, grasslands, and agricultural lands capture and store carbon, and explore the potential for negative emission technologies in the forest sector. Together we can do this.

• Empowering communities to take climate action. We are investing $2.2 billion in expanding the Low Carbon Economy Fund to support projects from governments, Independent Publisher of Print Magazines & Podcasts

HUMBER COLLEGE COMMUNITY UPDATE

The metaphors of rebirth this time of year are indicative of the change around us as the desolate winter turns into the nourishing spring. Hopefully, the rain will soon change to warmer weather and sunshine. At Humber Lakeshore, changes are plentiful as we continue to build a strong foundation and provide the best possible learning environment for our students. That work includes creating a sustainable future for our wider community. In April, Humber College was named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the seventh year in a row by MediaCorp Canada. The award recognizes employers that lead the nation in making environmental values part of their organizational culture. We are working hard to advance low and zero-carbon, sustainable and 12

resilient infrastructure on our campuses with a plan to reach net-zero by 2050. We continue to innovate as we design and build the 370,000 square-foot zero carbon Humber Cultural Hub at our Lakeshore campus. When completed, this building will be one of the most sustainable developments in Canada and a showcase for global best practices in sustainability and energy efficiency. I encourage you to learn more about how Humber is addressing sustainability and learn how you too can take action in building a more sustainable future for future generations.

Growing our community

The planters need regular watering and maintenance throughout the season and a collaboration of providers and volunteers support growing the fruit and vegetables. Throughout the season, harvest pick-up days are planned, and at the end of the season a celebration is held for all our providers and volunteers. It is an amazing project that helps bring our community together, while addressing issues of food insecurity. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit The Pod Project webpage at GardensLakeshore.ca. Bottling up the past The Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre is excited to announce the opening of a new exhibition: Bottled Up – The Secrets of Prohibition Era Etobicoke. We are even more excited to be able to welcome the public back to the Centre as of May 2. Discover some of Toronto’s worst-kept secrets from a time of speakeasys and an obscure connection to an underground alcohol ring.

Humber’s COIs foster experiential learning opportunities for Humber students and prepare them to become the innovative and strategic problem-solvers of tomorrow. Collectively, the COI Network bridges the gap between innovation and application, concepts, and commercialization. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT “ANNE”IVERSARY “Anne” iversary “Anniversary” has the meaning “year” embedded in it. The word comes from the Latin “annus” which means “year” and “versus,” which means “to turn” So, an anniversary marks the turning of a year. That’s why it’s better to say we’re celebrating our 4th anniversary instead of our 4-year anniversary. Interesting fact – you can drop the year reference when saying Happy x Anniversary if you included it when using the greeting as your norm. I know I did. My anniversaries reference my personal milestones–and that is important to me. We all accomplish milestones in our own way, in our own time. Every obstacle you overcome in your journey becomes a milestone. An occasion for further triumph. Birth, marriage, and death are important life anniversaries but there are so many others to honour: historic happenings, moments in a relationship, graduations, work anniversaries, the anniversary of a major health triumph or recovery, moving into a new house, conquering a fear, etc. Any milestone, at whatever age and circumstance, is something to be proud of. By the way, Anne is my middle name. My mother’s name is Anne. I have been estranged from her and my father since December 8th, 2013. This is an anniversary I always remember since it was the day I took back my own life and started living on my terms. For now, signing off from a place of calm, joy, and love. 14
