Dear Friends and Supporters, With great excitement and profound gratitude, I am thrilled to share Teach For America Dallas-Fort Worth’s annual report for the 2022-23 school year, characterized by remarkable progress and transformative achievements for our organization and the students we serve. As we reflect on the past year, it is inspiring to see the impact we are making, in partnership with our network of nearly 1,600 corps members and alumni, on the landscape of education across North Texas.

Bibi Yasmin Katsev Executive Director Teach For America Dallas-Fort Worth

Our first commitment remains to our students, who deserve access to high-quality academic support tailored to their unique challenges. We know this begins with placing leaders who are passionate about ensuring every child has access to the highest quality education. We rely on our teachers more than ever to help bridge significant learning gaps, even as they face continued mental health concerns and burnout that challenge their longevity in education. Nonetheless, our network remains committed to growing its impact, with nearly 520+ alumni still working in education across North Texas. To support our visionary network of corps members and alumni, Teach For America invested in several innovations in the 2022-23 school year. To bolster their well-being, we gave corps members access to mental health resources, financial stipends, and other wraparound supports. In partnership with Commit, we launched the School Systems Leader Academy, a dynamic professional program for alumni in mid-level school district roles and aspiring leaders. Most significantly, we implemented a new placement strategy that concentrates corps members within five high-need neighborhoods across Dallas-Fort Worth called Community Impact Zones. This strategy will deepen our network’s presence and resources in these communities in pursuit of our 2030 goal. I am excited to build off the remarkable work from the 2022-23 school year and put our children on a path to futures filled with possibility. In 2024, I look forward to launching the Ignite Fellowship, TFA’s national tutoring corps, designed to improve academic achievement and socialemotional learning for students needing post-pandemic recovery. I am also dedicated to furthering our Community Impact Zone work and supporting our alumni educators working in these same zones. I invite you to immerse yourself in our annual report, celebrate our collective achievements, and join me in envisioning endless possibilities as we Illuminate Every Learner.

In strength and solidarity,

Bibi Yasmin Katsev

This year, we continued our efforts to transform the education system by recruiting the next generation of leaders, working hand-in-hand with students and communities to reimagine the future of learning. We prepared our newest corps members with impactful, high-intensity training during TFA DFW’s redesigned summer 2022 Pre-Service training. For the first time in many years, we partnered with Dallas ISD for summer school. All corps members taught at Ann Richards STEAM Academy, a middle school in our Pleasant Grove Community Impact Zone, where they delivered COVID recovery materials in reading and math. We built upon foundational Pre-Service training throughout the school year with additional development and programming for both first- and second-year corps members, helping them best meet their students' needs. TFA DFW staff provided one-on-one coaching and connected corps members to resources that support their ongoing leadership development and well-being.

Passionate Teachers Fuel Student Success Amanda McAuliffe experienced the power of dedicated and passionate teachers through her own education journey. These experiences not only encouraged her success in school but also inspired her to have a similar impact on kids like herself one day. As a part of a summer internship, she volunteered at a local children’s hospital, where her love for impactful advocacy grew. Upon graduation, she sought to further her impact in the community and joined Teach For America. As she entered her first year in the classroom, she was ready to teach; but also ready to learn and grow in her skills. Throughout the year, Amanda had the support of her TFA coaches and personal mentors as she navigated providing her students the best education and adapting to their specific needs. She implemented autonomous learning options that encourage intellectual curiosity, motivation to learn, and ownership of their academic journeys. When she saw her students struggle, she differentiated and personalized lesson plans based on their needs. Her commitment to illuminating her students shone through, with 100% of her students passing their math STAAR exam at the end of the year.

Her commitment to illuminating her students shone through, with 100% of her students passing their math STAAR exam at the end of the year.

Amanda is energized by seeing her students illuminated with confidence in their learning by helping them build and scaffold new skill levels. She greatly appreciates the support of her community mentors and TFA coaches, who worked alongside her to create an engaging and enriching learning environment for her students to succeed. Just as her mentors encouraged and helped her grow, she encourages those around her to seek those same opportunities to expand perspectives within the community.

06 The Alumni Movement

1,430+ Alumni

~60%

of Corps Members Continue to Work in Education After 2 Years

TFA Dallas-Fort Worth supports our dynamic alumni by providing ongoing professional development, networking opportunities, and talent placement.

After completing their two-year commitment, our corps members become alumni, continuing to lead at all levels of the systems of DallasFort Worth that influence student outcomes. Approximately 60% percent of our 1,430+ alumni stay in the field of education. We have 40 school principals, 24 school systems leaders, and 345 teachers who are still leading strong outcomes in classrooms, impacting over 216,000 students across the metroplex.

Alumni Professional Development Opportunities Explore School Leadership Night TFA hosted a Q&A panel of school leaders for community members and DFW alumni educators to gain insight into school leadership pathways and learn what is needed to be competitive candidates for upcoming leadership roles.

Summer Fellowship In this six-week fellowship, fellows work directly on critical issues facing our community and gain invaluable leadership skills. Seventeen fellows partnered with 14 community organizations to grow their equitable education mindsets and learn transferable skills.

School Systems Leadership Academy In partnership with Miguel Solis (DFW ’09) of Commit, TFA DFW launched the School Systems Leaders Academy in January 2023, with 12 mid-level leaders participating in the ongoing cohort that concluded in August. This professional development program aims to source a high-quality pipeline of leaders prepared to ascend to some of the highest vacancies in North Texas school systems (e.g., superintendents).

A Lifelong Commitment to Education Meet Founding Corps Member, Brittney Cooper, and learn about her 15 years of impact in North Texas schools. Brittney Cooper was born and raised in Denver, CO, where the importance of education was instilled in her at an early age. Her parents were both educators for Denver Public Schools with a combined 50+ years of experience. Her own educational journey in Denver included a robust set of extracurricular activities, a rigorous curriculum, dedicated teachers, and a diversity of thought, culture, and people - yet disparities across lines of diversity were still visible around her. Understanding the education system, her parents ensured that she had access to the best opportunities, such as honors/AP classes. Even at a young age, Brittney realized that not all children had the same educational opportunities as she did. After graduating college, Brittney joined Teach For America as an extension of her passion for people and also in honor of the decades of impact and legacy her parents had. Since joining the founding corps for TFA DFW in 2009, Brittney has grown her scale of impact from the classroom to the school system level. In her current work as the Senior Director for College and Career Preparation, she loves the variance in day-to-day opportunities as she works to solve problems, (re)design systems, coach and develop others, and continue to make an impact in classrooms across the metroplex.

Brittney Cooper (DFW ‘09) Senior Director for College & Career Preparation Uplift Education

She is energized by her experience in the classroom, the educators who inspired her to excel, and the opportunity to give back and contribute to the experience of others. Her work in creating community across North Texas is rooted in the West African philosophies of "I am a person through people" and "I am because we are.”
