International Update NEWS FROM T-O’S INTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE

rebecca riley My name is Rebecca Riley, and I was recently elected at International Convention in Phoenix, Arizona to serve you in the position of International periodic updates that I will send out to my three assigned Sister Districts: Georgia, Kansas, and Texas-Oklahoma. (Sister Districts are grouped together in a caucus room at International Convention and work with some updates and general information about Key Club International. Attached are a few resources you might introduction that I made.

REBECCA RILEY IS READY TO BE YOUR INTERNATIONAL TRUSTEE As an International Trustee, some of the things I'd like to accomplish are 1) review and possibly revise the criteria for the Robert F. Lucas Outstanding Lt. Governor Award to make it more conducive to the tasks and challenges today's Lt. Governor's are expected to achieve and overcome, respectively; 2) obtain a corporate sponsorship for next year's International Convention to reduce the registration cost for attendees and prospectively boost attendance; 3) create a new award to recognize especially outstanding District Projects. Those of you who attended International Convention may remember this platform from my campaign. Please let me know if you have any ideas regarding my goals or if you can see any way to improve them.

" feel involved at the International level. I do not want that to be the case this year. So, on that note, are there any ideas that you have for Key Club International or any goals for our organization that I can help you try to realize this year? Please let me know so that Key Club can see more of its members involved on the International level.

Governor’s Column NEWS FROM T-O’S DISTRICT GOVERNOR

2011-2012 governor’s project: operation overwatch WHAT’S THE PROJECT? Whenever I first planned to run for Governor, I noticed that one of the requirements was that I attend International Convention in Phoenix, Arizona. The remarkable thing is that my paternal Grandpa lives just a few minutes away from Phoenix, in Tempe. I asked my Dad about how my Grandpa was doing (I hadn’t seen him in 5 years) and found out many things about my Grandpa that I have never known. For example- he served in the US army for several years. Not only that, but he was a former Kiwanian. Former Kiwanian? I didn’t ask him whenever I did visit him after ICON because he’d recently suffered from a stroke and has speech complications on top of memory loss. Imagine all of the valuable information that I lost. Take advantage of the time you have with loved ones now, especially those who put themselves in dangerous situations to protect your freedom.

WHY ‘OPERATION OVERWATCH’?

CAN OUR KEY CLUB

WORK WITH A RELATED In modern warfare, overwatch is the state of one small unit supporting another unit, while they are executing fire ORGANIZATION? and movement tactics. The term overwatch originates in Definitely! A list of organizations are listed on the U.S. military doctrine. Governor’s Project information sheet such as American Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overwatch T-O is supporting its troops, veterans and their families! Widow Project, Hero Miles, Operation Homefront, to name a few. Get involved! There are tons of great service project ideas and a patch for your Key Club banner for completing the HOW CAN T-O HELP TO project and turning in the right forms by early March.

SUPPORT THIS CAUSE? In order to qualify for the Governor’s Project patch, clubs must complete a minimum of two service projects. Below are some of Governor Megan’s personal favorites: Helping the troops: Send magazines and newspapers overseas, create care packages Helping their families: Clipping coupons, buy them a webcam so they can video chat with their loved one Recognizing veterans: Do something special on Veteran’s Day, host a dinner for them Remembering those you gave up their lives for our freedom: Put flowers on graves, visit memorials

Pictured above, left to right: Megan’s grandpa, Megan’s aunt, Megan’s brother, Megan, Megan’s sister

I HAVE A QUESTION… And we have an answer. Any questions, comments or concerns should be directed to Division 28 lieutenant governor Alan Beistegui who is the Governor’s Project Chairman. His email address is abeistegui@ hotmail.com. If your local lieutenant governor hasn’t distributed the Governor’s Project information sheet and completion form to your club yet, please send Alan an email. August 2011

can anything else go wrong? fter several... ahem, mishaps, the very $%& * +/559 Wow. I have put many long hours into remodeling this magazine, and I hope that it is now truly worthy of being a representative of our mighty district. As you can all see, the Tex-O has had a total facelift and has been brought into the current world of media. With that being said, I’m also implementing one more change that I believe will really take this magazine to the next level-- themes. Each month, all the articles published will need to be written over a uniform theme so the magazine is cohesive. This issue’s theme, as you can see, was “Summer Service, Had Me a Blast and all the contributing articles c es looked ooo ed bback c to o what Key Clubs did over the

+ clubbers say they are making Braille Bibles, other people have questions like, “So you can read Braille? or “How do you do that? In actuality, the process is fairly simple and doesn’t require volunteers to know how to read Braille at all. Getting the job done properly requires however at least 6 people at different “stations or parts of the room, working assembly line style. First, workers place blank white sheets of paper in-between metal printing press sheets that are covered with the raised characters of the Braille language. The metal sheets are then placed on top of cardboard and stacked in sets of 7-10 pages (an entire set of stacks constitutes one book of the Bible). Finally a volunteer at the imprinting station takes the metal sheet and puts it within an apparatus made of two wooden boards, which is run through a pressing machine that causes the imprints from the metal sheets to be transferred onto the blank white paper. Each page is removed from the boards and bound, then the cycle continues. Usually clubbers can make somewhere between 5-7 books per day. Pascha Paschal High School’s members love this interesting way to serve, as it is satisfying to give back, and also a very unusual and fun way Paschal High to contribute to those in need. Not many can honestly say that School Key Club Member they’ve printed a book for the blind!

E M I T D O O G A P U SEWING On July 6, 2011 members of the Central High Key Club, including Bethany Nieto, Webmaster, Thomas Franco, President, Katherine Lauer, Lt. Governor, Division 12, and I (Rebecca Bingham, Sec/Editor), went to Fort Concho to help with the Fun at the Fort activity “Make it Wool. About 20 children joined in on the morning’s activities. The kids, along with our own Key Clubbers, left with new knowledge and ideas.

First, the children gathered together on a quilt and learned about how wool is made and its uses. Then they learned about sewing, and different styles of sewing that they could use. They eagerly waited to return to their tables and give it a try. Finally, they got their chance. They began making their own pin cushion and sewing decorations on it. The Key Clubbers helped them get started and work their way through it. Each child had their own style and ideas. They sewed decorations on the side of the cylinder shaped pin cushion. Then they learned different ways to sew on the buttons. Many of the children admitted they had no idea that sewing could be so much fun. Some even asked about doing the craft at home. In such a technological society, it was very refreshing to see children so interested in something other than video games and the computer. Finally, it was time to go and parents waited " Rebecca their pin cushion. They left with smiles and Bingham a new knowledge of sewing that they could pursue at home. It’s great to see these crafts being taught to the younger generations. Withh awesome activities such as this, they are sure to stay with us.

McFee Madness:

Cypress Woods Key Club reminisces on their own grade school days when they help little ones get comfortable in their new school n August 13th 2011, students from Cy-Woods Key Club volunteered at the McFee Elementary orientation and got the chance to feel what it is like for most teachers and volunteers who have been doing this for years. Orientation is the time where students new or old come back to receive their papers / ] " J " one hundred folders full of important information for the students. Afterwards, members sat down with the other volunteers to help distribute the folders around, and during this time students from McFee Elementary from grades kindergarten began to show up, some excited to meet all their friends and old teachers while others stood quiet in the wake of so many unfamiliar faces. Key Clubbers were reminded of the time that they were in elementary shoes and brought smiles to McFee Elementary’s new library and lots of little faces as they completed

just Jeans rooms, I was told that jeans (especially men’s) were one of their greatest needs. That got me thinking! My mom had just bought me new jeans, so I knew I had at least two pairs of old jeans at home. They were still in great condition; I had just out grown them. So, I thought, I will start collecting jeans. If I have jeans lying around, I bet others do too. So I named my new project JUST JEANS. The jeans could be new or used, any size, for men, women or children, I JUST need JEANS. I asked everyone at school, church, extracurricular clubs, and even neighbors to sort through their closets and give me jeans. I will soon donate all the jeans to CAM and Haven for Hope. This is a very easy project that will really help e big need of others. Maybe you would like to help? Tell your friends and neighbors that you just need jeans.

ver the summer, I had the opportunity to serve my community in several ways. I helped the Kiwanis with Fiesta Noche and with the Miracle Mile of Quarters. I took cupcakes to the Ronald McDonald House and donated items for Stuff the Bus. In August, I went to Christian Assistance Ministries (CAM) in San Antonio. While I was there, I put school supplies into backpacks for children who would not have new school supplies if CAM did not provide them. ` ` I was given a tour of the facility and told how they operate. They offer emergencies, boxes of food, clothes and bag lunches. People may need food for several days or they made need clothes or just a lunch for the day. While we were looking at the clothing

ELIMINATE t’s a cause we don’t hear about, but something we should. It’s a cause we don’t think about, but something we should. It’s a cause we don’t tell people about, but something we should. The cause? Eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus. It was estimated by the World Health Organization in 1988, that 787,000 newborns died of neonatal tetanus. In 2008, 59,000 newborns died, a 92% reduction, of the same cause. These statistics go beyond paper when you take into account that these deaths are curable. As of December 2010, 39 countries were still left in demise and mortality. For this reason, Kiwanis International partnered with UNICEF in The Eliminate Project. It is a large task, but more importantly, it is a possible task, to eliminate, in its entirety, maternal and neonatal tetanus. These deaths won’t happen. It’s as simple as that. If that wasn’t enough for you to be called to serve

through this incredible project, have you ever wondered what it would be like if you couldn’t hug or feel the warmth and love of your family? With tetanus, this reality is shattered. Contracted at birth, tetanus is a disease that is harming to innocent children before they enter the world. Within days of birth, these children are dead. In those days of life, they remain untouched by ALL human contact, or they endure serious burning and pain. Join Eliminate today. Stop this problem that has a cure. Unite with UNICEF and Kiwanis International, to completely and totally end tetanus; let innocent children be born into their parents’ arms, not a ventilated pod, deprived of human touch until their death. Save lives. Together, we can ELIMINATE maternal and neonatal tetanus.

n Thursday, July 21, 2011 Brownwood High School Key Club participated in a very special inter-club activity. In Brownwood, Texas lies an amazing organization known as the Aldersgate Enrichment Community. Inside the walls of its campus, Aldersgate provides job opportunities to mentally and physically handicapped individuals who would otherwise be unemployed, and more than likely, without a home. Brownwood Key Club members helped service hamburgers, chips, peach cobbler and tea to the Pecan Valley Kiwanis Club, Aldersgate Aktion Club, and San Angelo Central High School Key Club. After all the hamburgers were served, the President of the Brownwood Kiwanis Club opened the meeting. President Micheal Richardson also asked the president of the Aldersgate Aktion Club and the VicePresident of Brownwood High School Key Club, Brianna Helms to assist him in opening the meeting by addressing each of their branches of the K-Family. BHS Key Club had a great time working the serving line giving a smile and a friendly word to all of the unique individuals who came by them. All in all the members had a great time and always look forward to participating with other clubs like Aktion and p Kiwanis branches of the K-Family. K
