DaveSpikey Comedian

When did you first realise you could make people laugh?

It was during my late teens I think, playing Saturday and Sunday Football for Bolton Hospitals and Ace Shutters(!). All those years listening to radio comedy on a Sunday afternoon after Two Way Family Favourites with my mum and dad must have insinuated itself into the comedy lobe of my brain. The Navy Lark, The Clitheroe Kid and the fantastic Round the Horne were main contributors, then early television comedy with Morecambe and Wise, Tommy Cooper and Phil Silvers as Sgt Bilko. I loved Phil Silvers, he was a genius with his fast clever comic patter, his caustic asides and his looks – he had this great range of comedic looks, pauses and double takes which I found easy to mimic. Add to the mix the essential comedy timing that I must have inherited from the banter with my parents and suddenly I discovered, many years later, (now my inhibitions had largely disappeared after working in the vibrant hospital environment) that I could make people laugh. Not only that, it would appear that in many cases I was the quickest with a remark or quip and that my view on humorous events was slightly skewed and thus more surprising, which is of course one of the major constituents in the practice of the art of comedy. Of course, it helped that I was surrounded both at work and in the football changing rooms by colleagues and friends who were naturally funny and in those circumstances getting the biggest laugh becomes a bit of a competition. In those days we had the news, developments in popular culture and a mere four TV channels for our comedy fodder, so we all had the same topics for comedy criticism and deconstruction in the staff room, the pub and the changing rooms. Where do you find inspiration for

Girl 2 Where?!! Girl 1 In the flat over the laundrette Girl 2 The one next to the Chinese? Girl 1 Yeah – Drugs they think . They reckon its been there for ages Girl 2 How do they know? Girl 1 It was stiff rigid Girl 2 It was Cliff Richard?!

your stand-up?

I get loads of ideas from real life, which is highlighted in the newspapers and on television, as well as eavesdropping on conversation. I’ve got some sort of selective radar that locks on to strange and unusual conversations. Even in busy, noisy places I pick up the one weird exchange. I’ve incorporated these into the set. I heard this conversation not long ago between two typical northern girls… Girl 1 Have you heard they’ve found a body?

Yeah right! Cliff Richard dead from drugs in a flat over the laundrette in Chorley! How thick do you have to be? And, if it was Cliff, doesn’t she think that would be her friends opening line – “Hey they’ve found Cliff Richard dead in that flat over the laundrette”. She wouldn’t have left it to the end of the story would she and then just added “and guess who it was? Cliff Richard!” I think the skill, the art if you like, of a comedian is to see and hear the things that everybody else does

but in that slightly skewed left-field way, then exaggerate and embellish the material to wring every last drop of funny from it. You have finished the first half of your nationwide ‘Words Don’t Come Easy’ tour, how did it go?

The tour was great thanks. It’s my best tour so far I think… although I would say that wouldn’t I? That’s probably because my previous tours were crafted largely from the masses of material I’d accumulated during my years on the circuit, working in the NHS and on TV panel shows, whereas, this time I had to start from scratch. I love the structure and rhythm of the English Language and hate its misuse and abuse, and after deciding to make this the theme of the show, I realised that actually it’s a pretty broad canvas and a rich source of comedy.

www.rochdalestyle.com

7

What can we expect from the tour when it resumes in the autumn? Any spoilers?!

Where to start? Well, I hate text-speak and Facebook speak – its lazy , its a refuge for illiterates. ‘L8R’ takes how many milliseconds less to type in than ‘Later’? What is so important in your life that saving a couple of seconds in your texts helps you to achieve? I’m guessing naff all because you spend half your life texting or tweeting rubbish like: “Stuck in ASDA and it’s packed and the queues are a mile long – gonna be here hours!”. Well thanks for the info love, I’ll go straight round your house and have your flat-screen TV.

They investigate incidents where they have to call for the paramedics; one starstruck playing it up for the cameras and the other new and keen. They take victims to A&E, where our two nurses dealing with a load of timewasters have to concentrate on the ‘emergency’. I’m very excited about it and loving writing it. I’ve not shown it anybody yet, but I really hope the TV people see the comedy potential,

can tell he is instinctively funny and has natural ‘funny bones’ and it’s because of this that he makes you feel as though he’s talking directly to you, if you know what I mean. That it’s just him, you and a few friends in the pub having a laugh and a joke, as we all do and he’s the really funny mate who makes you laugh just by giving you his take on life. That’s what suits my style and it’s what I’ve always tried to do. My current favourite comedians are Jimmy Carr and Ricky Gervais. Any plans for the summer, during your break from touring?

And the words that have started appearing on pretentious menus – even in pubs! You can’t move these days for Coulis or Compote or Melange. Which part of a lamb is noisette and what’s a galette? ‘Drizzled with jus’ – Gravy on it yes? ‘Encased in a filo basket’ – that’ll be a pie then. ‘Breast of duck kissed by the Chefs signature sauce’ – Urgh! That sounds very worrying. The misuse of the word ‘literally’ – I literally cried my eyes out. I’d love to see that happen - cry cry ... plop plop. Add these minor irritations to mad newspaper stories ‘Local man stuck in Turkey all Christmas’, even more stupid song lyrics, police-speak, parent and grandparent speak etc! What projects have you got in the pipeline?

I’ve got a script commission from BBC1 for a sitcom I’m writing with Neil Fitzmaurice. Provisionally, it’s called Glitterball and it’s about the world of ballroom dancing at grass roots level. We’ve set it at a dance school in Blackpool and it’s more about the characters than the dancing and how things change within the group when a local competition is announced. I’m also just finishing a comedy based on those ‘Police Camera Action’ and ‘Emergency’ shows, because it’s never really been done before and I have so much NHS experience and stories stored away. I’ve always wanted to write a medically based comedy, but every time you turn the TV on there seems to be another one, so I’ve been waiting for the inspiration for a different angle on the genre and this is it. So I have two policemen, one a by-the-book pedantic bloke, the other a bit thick and a bit lazy. 8

www.rochdalestyle.com

Loads of writing for my various projects and reading a stack of books that I have to review on Channel 4’s TV Book Club – that’s a labour of love as I am an avid reader. Tell us a joke…

combined with the serious underlying message regarding the use and abuse of our emergency services. I’ve been mentoring a young writer, John Lebbon from Cumbria, and we’ve written a script about life in that part of the world. I've found it a refreshing change to get out of inner cities and examine how disaffected youth struggle with modern day life out in the countryside, where fewer opportunities in terms of work, leisure and relationships go hand in hand with less hope, more frustration and despair. The fact that these emotions seem to be amplified when viewed in an area of natural beauty, where outsiders are thrilled by idyllic landscapes, yet the youngsters who live there view it as a bleak world, is a strong theme I think. Any burning ambitions for the future?

I’d be greedy to want any more. I’ve been so very fortunate to have so much success in two professions that I’ve loved. I suppose that if pushed, I’d like to write and direct a quality sitcom. I think that directing is a natural progression from writing.

A man walks into a doctors and says “Doctor I think I’m a moth” and the doctor says, “You need to see a psychiatrist, I’m only a GP” and the man says, “I was on the way to see the psychiatrist but then I saw your light on”.

Who makes you laugh?

Billy Connolly. My all time favourite stand-up comedian is a special performer; he has that almost unique gift of making you laugh no matter what he says, it’s his voice, his accent, his timing and the emphasis he uses on certain words and phrases. You

EXCITING FUTURE FOR CO-OP BIRTHPLACE A £1million major refurbishment project has begun on the Grade II listed Rochdale Pioneers Museum, on Toad Lane, Rochdale.

he work is being carried out by building conservation and restoration specialists, William Anelay Ltd and funded by a major award by the Heritage Lottery Fund. e project, which is due to last 36 weeks, will involve the restoration and conservation of the museum, which is in the premises where the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society commenced trading in 1844. eir efforts are regarded as the birthplace of today’s global cooperative movement, which today involves more than 800 million people worldwide. e project will include upgrading the museum, improving access and providing a new education and meeting space. e ‘store’, as the Co-operative was affectionately know as in the Rochdale area until the late 1900s, first opened for business on 21st December 1844, initially for two nights per week, selling four key items; butter, sugar, flour and oatmeal. e Rochdale Pioneers continued to trade from the Toad Lane premises until 1867, when they opened their new central premises, built at a cost of £13,500. Aer the business transferred to the central premises, 31 Toad Lane was first used for storage and then, from 1868, as a tobacco factory. In 1870, the lease expired and the property passed into private hands, until the 1920s when it was put up for sale. e Co-operative movement, recognising the historical 14

Mervyn Wilson, one of the Co-operative Heritage Trust trustees added: “e refurbished museum will be a fitting tribute to the efforts of the Pioneers – who continue to be an inspiration to co-operative members throughout the world." e project will be completed by the end of the year and the museum will be ready to receive visitors from all over the world in 2012, the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives.

HEALTHY EATING ON A BUDGET Healthy eating on a budget takes a little planning and creativity. But, if you consider the huge rewards: improved health and increased savings, you’ll find it’s well worth the effort!

Here are some handy tips to help you get started… * Plan detailed weekly menus. is saves money, balances your diet and reduces wasted food. * Make a shopping list before going to the supermarket. Be aware that supermarkets put certain products at eye-level to attract your attention. You will need extra discipline to stick to your list, however tempting that offer might be! * A healthy breakfast is an important way to start the day and oatmeal is a great choice. It’s cheap and has no added salt or sugar. You can give yourself even more benefit by adding seeds, fresh berries, raisins or cooked apples. Just try to avoid adding too much sugar. If you don’t enjoy hot cereal, try mixing oats with plain low fat yoghurt and some grated apple and cinnamon. * e freezer is your friend! Keep a supply of fruit and vegetables in the 24

www.rochdalestyle.com

freezer. Frozen fruit and vegetables are oen cheaper than fresh fruit and vegetables, but still count towards your five-a-day. Plus, you can use then whenever you want, which cuts down on waste. * Double the recipe when preparing a large meal. en freeze half of it to use later for convenient quick lunches or suppers. is will also stop you reaching for the nearest calorie-laden microwave meal. * Tins win – Tinned oily fish, such as sardines and salmon, are oen cheaper to buy than fresh fish. Yet, they still contain heart-friendly omega 3 fats, are simple to prepare and have a long shelf life. Opt for ones in spring water to keep the salt to a minimum. * Buy fresh fruits and vegetables when they are in season. ey taste great and are cheaper too. Leovers can be turned

into tasty homemade vegetable soups or fruit salads. Overripe so fruits are great with frozen berries to make delicious, healthy smoothies. * Canned tomatoes, beans and dried pulses are gentle on the purse strings and count towards your five-a-day. Beans on toast might be the signature of a student’s staple diet but it’s actually really good for you... especially if you choose wholemeal toast. Just try to choose beans with less sugar and salt. ere’s a whole variety of other beans and pulses to choose from too, all of which are great for adding bulk to casseroles, stews or salads. * Pack your own healthy lunch. You’ll save money each week and be in control of what you eat. Leovers make delicious, cheap and healthy alternatives to high fat and salt laden microwave meals.

Sandifords Gallery have kindly offered to host an exhibition at their Drake Street premises, which will be open to the public throughout the summer.

ndrew Saunders, a GCSE student will be presenting a body of sculptural work based on 1970’s and 1980’s horror movies. He has looked at iconic characters from some of his favourite films and produced sculptures using latex, wood and fabric. This includes a life-size sculpture of the famous “Here’s Johnny!” moment from ‘The Shining’. other characters making a macabre appearance are from ‘The Exorcist’ and ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’. one of oulder Hill’s Year 13 students, Kimberley Williams, will have a stunning table light on show, based on Greek mythology. Kimberley spent approximately 80 hours designing her lamp, which is based on a flower petal arrangement, with intricate etching detail in acrylics. Work from Year 11 textile students, includes Aimee Williams’ nursery wall hanging, with colourful appliqué fabrics and embroidery detail. Sasha Chaplin has created an embroidered and appliqué waistcoat, based on a Spanish theme. Charlotte Mennie has also made a waistcoat, based on contemporary punk. Embroidered dresses based on indian art and cushion covers with diamante finishes will also be exhibited. A wide variety of the student’s paintings will also be on show, guaranteed to stretch your imagination and get conversations flowing! The unique exhibition will run from 14th July until 31st August at Sandifords, 78 Drake Street, Rochdale (open fully during the Metro works). EYRE OF OPTIMISM AT ROCHDALE AFC

After presiding over Rochdale Football Club’s most successful period in their footballing history, manager Keith Hill and assistant David Flitcroft have left the club to manage championship club Barnsley. It is a fact of life that these days the only constant at any football club are the supporters, and as much as fans are usually reluctant to see their manager leave, it is inevitable when a manager has been as successful as Keith Hill. So exit Keith Hill, and enter Steve Eyre, the Manchester City Youth Team boss, who has already been making himself at home as Dale’s new manager. Eyre revealed the role the former Dale boss had played in helping him to make up his mind to leave Manchester City after over 20 years: “Keith has always been a role model for me, ever since I was an apprentice at Burnley and he was a few years older, making the grade at Blackburn. He was an inspiration and showed me then what could be achieved.”

“Rochdale have punched above their weight in recent seasons and Keith Hill and Dave Flitcroft have to take a lot of the credit for that,” he said. “But I’m used to being around big shoes – Sven Goran Eriksson, Mark Hughes, Joe Royle to name a few – so I’m not daunted by the prospect of filling them!” “It was never my intention to leave City, but Chris Dunphy and the board did not have too much trouble selling Rochdale to me. The chairman and directors were all very supportive and it quickly dawned on me that this was an opportunity I had to take – a great club left in fine condition by Keith and Dave…It is a great opportunity and I'm very proud. I was invited to go along and speak to the Dale board and once I'd been here for five minutes I knew I was in the right place.”

There can be no doubt previous boss Keith Hill will be a tough act to follow but Eyre isn't put off by the legacy left by Hill. on the contrary, Eyre admits Hill left the club in a great position to build for the future. He commented, "I don't feel there is any pressure on me right now, but I'm not naïve, I know there will be times when there will be. We will have good times and there will be tough times, but there are some great fixtures home and away next season and we will go into them fully prepared.” "I have met Keith a few times and I know they are big shoes to fill here at Spotland. I'll probably have to put three pairs of socks on to start with but I'm not intimidated by it. I'm excited about the future because I have confidence in my ability.” Style would like to wish Steve and the club the very best of luck for the season. www.rochdalestyle.com

Summer Look THE

With the Great British Summer upon us, here are some tips to make sure you're looking fabulous... whatever the weather!

Smooth sunkissed skin...

Toes...

Exfoliate your skin to remove any dead skin cells, leaving it silky smooth and fresh. Try Elemis Lime and Ginger Exfoliation; the perfect preparation for getting a deep even tan. For an even deeper tan, try a tan accelerator. Used two weeks before going in the sun, this product increases the melanin in the skin giving you a deeper tan with less time in the sun. It also reduces the risk of burning. But remember to always protect your skin with sunscreen, even on cloudy days.

If they are popping through your fitflops or sandals they must look pristine. With lots of options for a long lasting colour there is no excuse for chips or smudges. Shellac is the new product, which sets your colour before you leave The Salon, this can last up to four weeks. or choose a funky Minx design to shrink wrap your nail, this also can last up to four weeks.

Tone up... The new FitFlops summer range has arrived at The Salon. After wearing FitFlops for a few weeks legs start to become more toned and shapely. Grab a pair and show off your legs this summer!

Face... Try Bare Escentuals mineral make up range - make up that's so good for your skin you can sleep in it! With an SPF15 it provides coverage and protection all-in-one. Their naturally luminous and face fashion kits are amazing value for money and give you the season colours and look in one easy kit.

Eyelashes... Blink and Go lashes are attached to your own individual lashes for a fuller, longer lashes. no need for mascara. All you need is a coat of Bare Escentuals Buxom lip gloss to finish off your summer look.

For more information on any of the mentioned products or treatments ring 01706 861000 or call into The Salon, 669-671 Edenfield Road, norden.

The Salon (Beauty Salon & Day Spa, norden) hosted a make-up master class at Rochdale RUFC Clubhouse on 24th May. They welcomed Bare Escentuals international make-up artist SJ Froom, who is well known for her appearances on QVC. over 100 ladies attended and the evening was a great success, raising ÂŁ1000 for Breast Cancer Research.

3 THE LWD (LITTLE WHITE DRESS)

2

If there’s one key must-have item this summer it’s the little white dress. Cannes was awash with white frocks this year and the catwalks have confirmed that this trend is here to stay. The minimal white summer dress is elegant, understated and easy to accessorize.

GET A WoRKoUT WHILE YoU WALK… Every step you take in Fitflop sandals, shoes, and boots helps to tone and trim your legs, so you can show them off this summer! Fitflop footwear is engineered to stimulate your muscles, helping to tone your thighs, calves and your glutes. HEADGEAR…Headbands, bandanas and flower corsages are popular this season. Try fabric headbands tied in innovative ways to get the 70s retro look. Wear them with loose slept-in hair to create that bohemian effect. Floppy wide-brimmed hats are also perfect for summer – a classic, chic way to protect your face and enjoy the beautiful weather.

5

MInERAL MAKEUP is perfect for the summer

(and all year round!) as it doesn't clog pores and is great for your skin. Try BareMinerals makeup range, which provides impeccable coverage for every skin type and skin tone, yet it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing any make up at all! BareMinerals foundation even has an SPF15, to protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays.

SWIMWEAR There are lots of different styles and prints around at the moment, so experiment to find what suits you best. Chantilly lingerie (Cheetham Street) and Just Bras (Mellor Street) both have a stunning range of swimwear, perfect for your summer holidays.

8

9 FLoRAL PRInTS

6 SUnGLASSES Shades are an integral part of the summer wardrobe. not only do they protect your eyes, but they also spice up your summer look. Craven & Murray opticians, in norden, have plenty to choose from, including designer frames such as Ray-Bans and D&G. Paul Cheetham Eyecare (Lord Square, Rochdale Town Centre) also stock an extensive range of stylish frames.

7 DRESS To IMPRESS Make an impact at weddings and parties this summer. Deep jewel tones, intense blues and zesty shades of orange are right on trend and guaranteed to get you noticed. Best Dressed (Church St, Littleborough) have a fabulous selection.

Floral prints have dominated the runway this season. There are lots of different ways to incorporate floral prints into your wardrobe – a playsuit, blouse, shorts or maxi dress. 25Ten Boutique (Cheetham Street) stock a fantastic selection and their friendly staff will be happy to advise you on your summer wardrobe.

THE WEDGE SHoE At last… a comfy and stylish shoe trend! Wedges lengthen and slim the leg in the same way stilettos do, but are ten times more comfortable. Shoes by Laces (Cheetham Street) stock a wide range and offer great customer service, dedicated to helping you make the perfect choice.

Tom, Dick and Harry First Things First

MADS Theatre Company

St Ann’s Players.

The first night audience thoroughly enjoyed MADS production of Tom Dick and Harry, by Ray and Michael Cooney.

St Ann’s Players first production of 2011 was the very funny comedy ‘First Things First’ by Derek Benfield and it proved to be an excellent choice providing an evening of laughs a-plenty. The cast did not disappoint, in a story filled with all the usual hilarious situations one expects to find in a good comedy.

Director Jane Jeffery, assembled a very strong cast in a complicated plot and they all put in very strong performances. The three brothers of the title were played by Peter Dignan, as the mature Tom, Jeff Brookes, as the sly Dick and Mark Stubbert, as dozy hospital porter Harry. In what at first appears to be a basic plot, charmless Tom and his anxious wife Linda (Chloe Birtwistle), eager to adopt a baby, are waiting for the lady from the agency to turn up and carry out one last check, to ensure that they are fit for purpose. But on this crucial day their dreams are scuppered when Tom’s brothers, Dick and Harry, arrive with ideas of their own.

The play takes place in the home of Pete (Peter Dignan) and Sarah (Annette Nodwell). The couple have been happily married for six months but this is not to last. Sarah becomes suspicious of Pete when he pushes her to go out for the night. She decides to feign a broken ankle in an attempt to put paid to whatever he has planned. As an added distraction, she also invites round her formidable mother Margot (Judith Mansfield), with the pretence of bandaging her ankle but really to ask her advice. Pete eventually admits that he is meeting his old friend and best man, George (Tim Keiley), so Sarah and her mother, who is still suspicious of Pete, agree to go out. George appears and after a few nervous drinks announces that Pete’s first wife Jessica (Joanne Frost) was not killed in a climbing accident, as they had previously assumed, but is alive and well and about to arrive on the doorstep. She quickly appears – and of course, so do Sarah and her mother, as the plot thickens. Add into the mix Jessica’s boyfriend Alain (Dave Stopford), all the way from France and the farce hits frenzy point. With a mountain of words, the parts in this play were complicated to the extreme, but after a shaky start, each of the players carried them off with great aplomb.

The adoption plot merely serves to introduce an authority figure, Wendy Hardaker, as the prim Mrs Potter from the agency, carrying a clipboard and a sour expression. Dick has a van parked outside crammed with contraband, fags and brandy. But although this is given a passing glance by a complacent copper (Dean Plowes), PC Plod is more interested in missing tax discs than tax evasion. Harry’s ridiculous plan to bring body parts, wrapped in Sainsbury carrier bags, from the teaching hospital where he works, to bury under the patio, is yet another twist in the tale. We then have two illegal Albanian immigrants thrown into the mix, a Kosovian (Keith Taylor) and his granddaughter Katerina (Rachael Mayor), who are lurking among the ciggies and booze. Their appearance proves to be one of untold laughter when the old man struggles to toot his trumpet while hiding under the sofa bed. A sub-sub-plot also introduces an incompetent Russian Mafia hit-man (Ian Mansfield) with a briefcase full of counterfeit passports to be exchanged for cash. After flashing a gun, the man simply succumbs to the brothers’ ruse, and is easily captured in a wheelbarrow. There was great interaction between the three brothers, who kept the pace and energy of the farce flowing. Peter Dignan must be singled out for the sheer volume of lines which he delivered flawlessly, together with a well timed comic performance by Keith Taylor as the trumpet blowing Kosovan. Celebrating 40 years of drama productions in Milnrow, MADS have once again come up with a winner. n

Colin Meredith

Barbara Fielden directed a strong cast and should be thrilled with the results. Congratulations should also be extended to the backstage team for their excellent set, costumes and lighting in a strong opening production of the year. n

FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE... Summer is now well and truly in full swing and that means one thing... it’s the wedding season. Once the venue has been selected, the bride’s dress ordered and the cake chosen, there is one more vital choice to make… the wedding cars. This time last year I was about to get married and the only task my wife would entrust to me was organising the wedding transport.

In the past, one would simply look up a wedding car company in the Yellow Pages and that was that, but as weddings become ever more individualistic, there are a wide range of choices available and these are some different ideas to the vintage Rolls Royce. SAFE CHOICE - RANGE ROVER Once the car for mud plugging and now considered being in the same luxury league as an SClass Mercedes or Audi A8, the Range Rover, both in ‘Sport’ or ‘Vogue’ guise is gaining increasing popularity as a wedding car thanks to its large cabin and comfortable seats. There is plenty of room for that dress with the large train as well as the father of the bride. It also has one of the best air conditioning units, which will keep the bride cool in whatever the British Summer can throw at it. Even if the weather turns bad, the best offroader in history will get you to the church on time, whether you take the conventional on road route or go the less conventional scenic route across a few fields. Possibly the only down side to the Range Rover is its image which with its association to injunction-riddled Premier League footballers might be a little too much The Only Way is Essex for some. PETROLHEADS CHOICE – FORD MUSTANG Although you could pick pretty much any classic car, it’s the original Ford Mustang that is the most likely candidate to get the blood pumping of any petrolhead. I can hear you saying now that most brides will want something akin to the 1950 Bentley that Kate Middleton arrived in at Westminster Abbey than some dated piece of Americana.

Visit any classic car show and the numbers of females there are on the rise. Not just being dragged around by the menfolk but actively participating. So it’s no surprise that a friend with a ’67 ‘stang is inundated with requests from brides-to-be for wedding work with that burbling 4.3-litre V8 providing a better soundtrack to the day than a full choir! AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT – DELOREAN DMC-12 This one was a surprise to me to be honest. At a recent wedding I attended the bride arrived in a DeLorean, the car made famous by the Back to the Future franchise. A few of us speculated if this was some subconscious urge to go back in time and change history?! The bride in this case just turned out to be a fan of the films and wanted something different. It certainly made for some great wedding photos!

John DeLorean probably didn’t have the church run in mind when he created the DMC-12 from a pile of Renault and Lotus spares as it’s only a low-slung two-seater which means daddy will probably have to get the bus and there isn’t much space in the passenger seat for a large dress or a fancy bouffant hairstyle. The point here really is there is a car for all tastes and a brief internet search will put you in touch with someone who can help. If you can’t find the car to hire through an agency, try an owner’s club website as many owners will be happy to help out and love the attention their car will get! And if your curious what a motoring correspondent used for his wedding, well the bride arrived in a beautiful Aston Martin DB-9, while I was chauffeured in an ancient Rover 400, maybe that’s another top tip… make sure your best man drives a nice car! RASPBERRY SORBET Sorbet is the ultimate palate cleanser in between courses of a grand dinner, or more so now just served as a refreshing dessert at the end of a meal. It’s simply a water based ice, made without dairy products or egg yolks, but some recipes do contain egg whites. When I make sorbet I generally put fruits that are slightly over ripe as I feel using top grade fruits for pureeing them up is such a waste, plus over ripe berries are cheaper!

Makes Approximately 1 Litre 375ml stock syrup – made by dissolving 250g sugar in 250ml water with ½ vanilla pod in a pan, bring to the boil then remove from the heat and leave to infuse until cool. 450g raspberries Juice of 2 lemons 1 To make the sorbet – place the cool stock syrup in a food processor, add the raspberries and lemon and blend to a pulp. Pass through a sieve. 2 Place in an ice cream machine and churn according to the machines guidelines until smooth and firm, serve straight away or place in the freezer – try and eat within a few days otherwise it will lose its smooth consistency and have formed ice crystals.

First class for new social enterprise REstore, the new social enterprise, situated at Fieldhouse Mill, held its first awards ceremony in April. Simon Danczuk MP presented awards to the six successful students, who had undergone a training programme in retail skills designed to help them gain employment. The project is the idea of Elizabeth White and June Poree who recognised that there is nothing to help women who have been longterm unemployed to return to the workplace.

Elizabeth said: “We are lucky to have a number of volunteers who have given generously of their time, which has enabled us to open the unit. We are now waiting for further funding to run a second course. We already have a waiting list of potential students, people do want to work but if you don’t have a CV you don’t even get an interview, we aim to remedy that.” Anyone wishing to help can contact REstore, Unit F9, Fieldhouse Mill, Fieldhouse Rd, Rochdale.

Blooming great time for charity The Crimble played host to the third Annual Blooming Great Tea Party recently, raising an amazing £1400 for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Vivien Thompson, Chair of Rochdale Support Group for Marie Curie Cancer Care said: “We can’t thank The Crimble enough for supporting the charity and sponsoring this wonderful event yet again for us.” All the money raised will provide high quality Marie Curie nursing care for terminally ill patients in their own home and support for their families. John commented: "I love singing and to make a ‘dream come true’ was given the opportunity to sing in a recording studio as a Christmas present. This proved a fantastic experience. I recorded 18 songs at Studio Studio in Whitworth and I thought 72

it may be a good idea to sell the CD’s for the benefit of Springhill Hospice. The title of the album, Eighteen Roses, comes from one of my tracks, Eighteen Yellow Roses. SMILES ALL RoUnD Waterside Dental Care celebrated the completion of the first floor refurbishment by holding a Champagne open Evening in April. Patients, new and old, were invited to see the end result of all the building work and to learn more about the facial procedures offered in the practice, in addition to their full range of dental techniques. Those in their 20s and 30s were particularly interested in semi-permanent make-up and the “Heart Lips™” design of “Jolie pout”, which certainly has the WoW factor. Those a little older were introduced to the “oralift™” appliances, which stimulate facial muscles so helping reverse the triangle of ageing. The practice also offers muscle-relaxing injections and dermal fillers. Gail and Claire, from Debonair, demonstrated their Lily Liu range of mineral make-up. With their help, not only did the visitors leave happy from the champagne, but also looking much more glamorous.

HIGH STREET STYLE HITS RoCHDALE The Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre recently became the fashion capital of the north with an explosion of style. Shoppers were greeted by what looked like mannequins - but were actually real life models, dressed in clothes from the stores in The Rochdale Exchange.

The centre was awash with stylists from all the major stores and shoppers were given advice on their most complementary colour palettes and types of clothes to suit their body shape. Make up artists from Clinique and Elizabeth Arden were also on hand to give expert knowledge and free mini makeovers.
