Message from the eDitoR

Dear Readers,

Welcome to Style’s spring edition and my first as Editor. We recently celebrated our tenth birthday and offer our sincere thanks to everyone who has supported our family-run publication over the last decade.

Image: Atheer Mahir / ADMSLC

Rochdale is a beautiful place to live all year round, but especially during the spring! Hopefully some warmer weather will be upon us soon and we can all explore our borough’s breathtaking countryside. If you need inspiration, just take a look at the stunning photographs, by local photographers, on this page and pages 24-25, which also illustrate Rochdale’s quickly changing skyline. Even bigger changes are happening at the moment too, as work to uncover the river and medieval bridge in the town centre gets underway.

Please continue to support your local independent retailers, who you can find out about in this edition, and also Rochdale Market, which has now relocated to its new home, opposite the bus station and Metrolink stop, on the former ‘black box’ site. The recent opening of Costa Coffee, in the Rochdale Exchange, is also a great new addition to the town centre.

This issue is packed with exclusive celebrity interviews - Julie Hesmondhalgh, aka Hayley Cropper, talks to Style about life after Coronation Street (pgs 4-5) and we chat to comedian Buzz Hawkins (pgs 8-9), the man behind that much-loved radio series, The Bradshaws.

‘Bill Oddie’s Rochdale’ makes for an interesting read on pages 12-13 and on 16-17 we go behind-the-scenes at Rochdale RSPCA and meet lots of adorable feline friends… and a parrot!

American funnyman, Rich Hall, talks to us about his forthcoming tour (pgs 20-21) and we’ve put together a Wedding Guide beginning on page 39; plus all the usual features are back, including motoring, dining, fashion, beauty, local history, community, events and much more.

I love to hear from our readers, so please join our Facebook page (facebook.com/stylemagazine) or feel free to get in touch with any comments, photographs or ‘good news’ stories – email: ruth@rochdalestyle.com.

We’re also on the lookout for part-time salespeople at Style so drop me an email if you would like to know more.

JULIE HESMONDHALGH As Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street, Julie Hesmondhalgh played one of the most universally loved characters in the long and illustrious history of Coronation Street. Hayley was kind, caring and courageous and, as a transgender character (the first in British soap history), represented the kind of complex and rewarding acting role that comes along once in a lifetime. So, for Hesmondhalgh, leaving Corrie was an agonising decision, and a nation watched, equally agonised, as Hayley, suffering from terminal cancer, took her own life. “The decision to hang up Hayley's red anorak was a tough one… but there's life in the old dog yet, and there are other things I want to try”, she remarked at the time.

Little did she know, though, that waiting for her just around the corner was Cleo Whitaker, one of the lead roles in the latest landmark drama Cucumber, from the pen of the brilliant Russell T Davies; plus lots more exciting roles, which have included playing Sylvia Lancaster, mother of murdered Bacup teenager, Sophie, in Black Roses. Style caught up with Julie to discuss life after Corrie, snogging for a living and how she’d love to work on Dr Who! 4

I have to say I loved every moment of that job,

I'm also doing a play called Wit at the Royal

The National Cyclo-Cross Championships took place in Abergavenny, Wales where professional and amateur cyclists line up together for the race made up of laps around a cross-country course.

Lewis Craven, owner of Craven & Murray Opticians, said: “The National CycloCross Championships was a fantastic experience and to come in third place and receive the bronze medal after two professional cyclists is just incredible.

During the race, Lewis crept into the top ten after the first few laps, taking pole position for part of the event, ahead of Olympic cyclists and previous national champions. “I had finished sixth overall in the National Cyclo-Cross Series that was held over the winter comprising six events throughout the country, so I went into this competition expecting to come in a similar position. I would have been absolutely thrilled with sixth, so to come third overall is a great achievement for me.

“I’ve been working hard to fit my training in around running my own business where I work full time, and spending time with my family. It’s been a tough ride, but the medal has made it so worth it. I’ll be back in Craven & Murray Opticians tomorrow morning though, the world doesn’t stop because I’ve achieved one of my cycling goals!”.

BUZZ HAWKINS Style caught up with comedian and musician, Buzz Hawkins; the man behind legendary radio comedy, The Bradshaws. Buzz both created and voiced the fictional northern family, made up of Alf, Audrey and not forgetting, young Billy. The series gained huge popularity throughout the UK and abroad, when it sprang onto radio stations everywhere.

8

www.rochdalestyle.com

Incredibly, in over 30 years, not a week has passed when The Bradshaws has not been aired on radio in the UK. Some episodes were also made into a series for Granada TV. Multi-talented Mr Hawkins is still keeping busy touring and recording; and here he talks about his exciting future plans‌

Are the characters based on anyone in particular? My dad had eight sisters and three brothers so there was plenty of inspiration around me. After a few broadcasts, though, the listeners were phoning and writing in with their own stories about their relatives and friends. My characters grew from theirs. I just put a glass on life’s wall and listen with an open mind.

How did you come up with the idea of The Bradshaws? In the mid 80s I had the lifestyle of a fruit bat… I spent my nights being a Nitebeat Musician at Piccadilly Radio, Manchester, and my days trying to sleep. But, as I was determined to only perform my own songs on air, the sleeping bit was minimal as I spent most days writing and composing.

On one such sleep-deprived day I wrote a little monologue for a late night feature called Poet’s Corner and read it out on air using three different voices. It was a story about a mam, a dad, and a little boy on a daytrip to Blackpool. The switchboard lit up and I found myself committed to writing several every week.

Soon afterwards they made me a producer on the proviso I brought my Bradshaws stories to daytime radio. I remember asking ‘What does a producer do?’ and they replied, ‘He has the keys to the record library’. Talk about in at the deep end!

When did you first realise how popular The Bradshaws had become? Quite soon really. I’m hands-on with all my projects and while I was producing radio shows, I couldn’t resist answering the phones too, so I heard the enthusiasm first hand. And then, when the stories were nominated for ‘Best Use Of Comedy On Radio’, two years running, I knew that I’d stumbled on something. How is the ‘Goosed’ tour going? Buzzin’! It’s a daft night out and the word is getting around, so seats are selling fast. I’m looking to bring it to a local theatre in the autumn (Royal Court, Bacup or Middleton Arena are possibilities). Does Billy the puppet live at your house? He lives wherever I live! As do Alf and Audrey and all the other characters. Why do you think so many listeners took Alf, Audrey, and Billy to their hearts? I suppose it’s because the characters are really reflections of themselves and ordinary working people. The Bradshaws are just famous ordinary people. Are there any plans for more episodes of The Bradshaws… or is nearly 800 episodes enough?! Yes, it’s enough - in that short format anyway. I wrote and produced each story so that it fitted easily into radio playlists. Radio stations,

and there have been a lot over the years, simply have to drop a record from the playlist to be able to easily schedule a Bradshaws story. Even now there are more than fifty UK stations transmitting the stories regularly, so the format works. But I’m working on some longer scripts at the moment which are destined for vision. And of course the two books in the pipeline. It’s been said that The Bradshaws may have inspired the comedic style of the likes of Peter Kay and strikingly similar shows such as The Royle Family. Is imitation the sincerest form of flattery? Yes it is flattering to be imitated. Especially now that some of the others are actually admitting it. It would have been nice to have been acknowledged a long time ago but I’m banging on the glass ceiling now. Who first inspired you? Charles Dickens. He still does. What do you think makes northern humour so unique? Ah, good question. I’ve given that a right good pondering over the years. To name just one thing above all… the ability northerners have to laugh at themselves. And we certainly have a lot to laugh at. You’re an actor, writer, musician and comedian… what’s next? As for projects on the go at the moment - a big Bradshaws comic book (Beano Annual style out in May this year); a set of six dramas called ‘Telling Tales’; and an album called ‘You Know Who You Are’.

Longer term, a novel.

What advice would you give to aspiring entertainers and writers? Learn how to be inspired by opening your eyes and ears, and then do something with it right away. Here are a couple of maxims that have stood me in good stead… ‘It’s all about application: the application of the seat of your pants to the seat of the chair’ and ‘knock hard ‘cause life’s deaf’.

Bill Oddie’s rochdale

Style readers with a good memory will recall Bill Oddie’s extraordinary and brave appearance on BBC1’s family history programme, “Who Do You Think You Are?”. Bill’s own struggle with depression in some ways echoed his mother’s mental health problems, and he certainly had an unusual childhood, with his mother absent nearly all the time. Those of you with even longer memories may recall Bill’s mother, Lilian, living in Rochdale into the 1980’s. Thanks to the television programme and Bill’s autobiography “One Flew Into The Cuckoo’s Nest”, we have quite a good picture of his childhood in Rochdale. Although Bill Oddie is best known these

days as a birdwatcher and television presenter,

this multi-talented Rochdalian has also worked as

an actor, comedian and scriptwriter on stage,

television and radio, notably on “The Goodies”,

as well as being a hit songwriter and musician. I want to focus on how Rochdale looked

when Bill Oddie lived in the town in the late 12

1940’s. In the first twenty pages or so of his

autobiography, Bill provides us with an

incredibly detailed description of his childhood

haunts of nearly 70 years ago.

Perhaps the most important change in

Rochdale’s townscape was the construction of

the A58 dual carriageway from Sudden, along

Manchester Road and St Mary’s Gate, to Town

makes fascinating reading; there is no specific

mention of Bill – or any other pupil – but events

such as The Royal Wedding of 1947, the snow

and a sports afternoon at Lenny Barn are listed.

There were a lot of medical visits to the school

and a high level of staff illness. There was still

rationing in Britain and even the distribution of

sweets was recorded in the log book! St Albans

Primary School closed in 1974 and was

demolished later that year (exactly 100 years after

its opening) with the existing pupils going to the

newly built Sparrow Hill School.

Bill’s interest in ornithology started in

Rochdale; in his autobiography he describes

finding a bird’s nest in the privet hedge outside

his house whilst searching for his tennis ball! Bill

had stumbled upon a hedge sparrow’s nest which

contained four of its own eggs and a proverbial

cuckoo’s one (that gives the book its title). Bill

took one of the sparrow’s eggs back to his house

where he witnessed the aftermath of some

shocking domestic violence; Bill’s mother had

attacked his father and the family would not be

the same again. Lilian Oddie was institutionalised

This made the ‘old’ Manchester Road into a

backwater. These changes make it quite hard to

visualise young Bill’s world, long before huge

amounts of demolition of terraced houses in the

Freehold and Pinfold areas.

The young William Edgar Oddie had been

born in 1941, the son of Harry and Lilian. Lilian

had had two previous pregnancies but neither baby had survived - a tragic piece of family

history revealed on “Who Do You Think You

Are?”. The Oddies’ had previously lived at 3

Darlington Road, off Queensway, but by 1947

were living on St Alban’s Terrace, that unique

high level row of houses above Sparthbottoms

Road. Incidentally, twenty years later, this was

used as a key film location for “The Family Way”

that starred both John Mills and his daughter

Hayley.

St Albans Church stood opposite St Albans

Terrace and Bill and his friends used to play

cowboys and indians in the graveyard. The

church was closed in 1971 and demolished two

years later. Its alabaster font was saved and is

Bill attended the infant department of St

of St Albans Street and Latin Street, overlooking

a playground on the western end of Broadfield

Park. Latin Street still exists but the area has

changed tremendously with new housing, motor vehicle works and offices.

One of Bill’s memories will be hard for many

readers to comprehend. Around the age of six, it was Bill’s turn to take the dinner money to the

post office! It seems that this was a routine errand

for young school pupils in those days, but even

Bill sounds amazed that it was allowed. There

was a sub-post office at 229 Drake Street, a

couple of minutes walk from the school. Bill

describes Drake Street as a ‘main’ road, ‘long

before zebra crossings and lollipop ladies’! Drake

Street had a tramway along its entire length but

this had closed in 1932, fifteen years earlier. The

first zebra crossings in Britain were in 1949;

crossing patrols arrived about twenty years later.

Like Bill in the television programme I have

been helped by the Local Studies staff at

Touchstones in my recent research. I was shown

the log book for St Albans Primary School which

The family moved to Birmingham in 1948

and Bill later attended the prestigious King

Edward’s School where he captained the Rugby

team. He moved on to study English Literature at

Pembroke College, Cambridge. Here, he took

part in the university’s famous Footlights Revue

alongside fellow future comedians John Cleese,

Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden. The last

two were to become, of course, his fellow

Goodies.

Although both St Alban’s Church and St

Alban’s Primary School are long gone, you can

still walk along St Alban’s Terrace and down

Sparthbottoms Road. Nowadays, there is

probably less traffic on the old Manchester Road

than there was in 1947. However, Beech House

School, a nursery and a decorating supplier are all

thriving.

Bill’s autobiography is still available to buy

or borrow from your local library and is a

refreshingly honest set of memoirs, without the

usual boasting or name dropping. Rochdale has

been the birthplace of many talented and

successful people, but few have had a life that has

been this unusual – or have been prepared to be

so honest about it.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT

RSPCA ROCHDALE

Travelling through the centre of Rochdale along the A58 you will see a very unassuming building on Redcross Street which hides a hive of activity. This is the RSPCA Rochdale Animal Centre; one of only two animal centres in the whole of Greater Manchester. The people of Rochdale and surrounding areas have always had a soft spot for animals and as far back as 1889 there were people so keen to help vulnerable animals they were prepared to set up a branch of the RSPCA, putting huge amounts of their own time and effort into it. Rochdale was very fortunate and, unlike many other areas, enough money and enthusiasm was raised for the branch to design and build its own Animal Centre.

passions of animal lovers across the Rochdale district. £600,000 was raised and the centre was not only refitted but extended to cater for a wider variety of animals and re-opened in 2006. The area now covered by the branch includes not only Rochdale but Littleborough, Heywood, Middleton, Whitworth and Todmorden. Today, the branch is more active than ever and the Animal Centre is in full swing 24 hours a day. The role of the RSPCA is to rescue animals and birds from cruelty and abandonment and during 2014 the National Call Centre’s cruelty and advice hotline received 1.4 million calls, while inspectors attended 250,000 incidents nationally. The Rochdale animal centre has supported the

The fortunes of the branch rose and fell over the years, but in 1998 it was realised that the Animal Centre could no longer continue without major refurbishment and up-to-date facilities. This, in fact, turned out to be the catalyst needed to re-ignite the 16

During the last nine years the branch has saved over 3,000 animals and the staff and volunteers do a fantastic job in providing the care they need. Chan Taylor, Deputy Manager, commented: “Unfortunately, the Rochdale area has one of the highest levels of animal cruelty in the country. If the centre was empty, it would be re-filled with animals within 1-2 hours.” Most of the animals brought to the centre are cats and kittens but they also have rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters and other ‘small furries’; plus parrots, budgies, cockatiels and limited accommodation for dogs. Over the years they have also accommodated chickens, cockerels, ducks, swans, geese, peacocks and other

Others that are very shy or frightened need socialising to prepare them for rehoming, and this is done by some of our wonderful volunteers… The nicest part of the day is seeing the many animals being rehomed to loving new homes. Many of our adopters send us photos of their new pet in their new home which is lovely.” “If you are interested in seeing the work we do we would be delighted to see you at the animal centre during opening hours (11.30am-3.30pm, everyday except Wednesday) where you can meet our ‘guests’,” added Chan.

COMEDIAN

RICH HALL Step away from the mobile phone. Put away the tablet. The wonderfully acerbic comedian Rich Hall is about to come on stage, and he would like your undivided attention. Rich, one of the most magnetic stand-ups currently at work in this country, chats to us in the run-up to his hugely anticipated spring tour of the UK - Rich Hall 3:10 to Humour. The American-born comedian, who was raised in North Carolina, begins by underlining his enduring passion for the live arena. “What I love about stand-up is the immediacy of it. Having run the gamut of TV panel shows, after a while you know how to do them and they are not so much fun anymore...

20

www.rochdalestyle.com

The comic, who won two Emmys for his work as a writer on The David Letterman Show, explains that, “I do what Americans call ‘crowd work’. I really enjoy that because I can turn it into improvised songs, which is a big thrill for me. I always have a guitar beside me on stage in case something happens.

... “But now I know I’m going to be on stage somewhere like Middleton, and that prospect is really exciting. For those two hours, no one is looking at their phones. It’s a true non-media event. Those sorts of occasions are rapidly disappearing, and that’s why I value them so much.”

A stand-up whose plainspoken, growling indignation and waspish observations have won him fans all over the world, Rich has been described as a transatlantic messenger lampooning each country he visits with his common sense comedy. To prove the point, he is never less than harsh on his homeland.

His critically acclaimed grouchy deadpan style has established him as a master of absurdist irony and the king of rapid-fire wit. The Montana resident is renowned for his expertly crafted tirades. His biting, yet compelling comedy has helped earn him a Perrier Award in Edinburgh and a Barry in Melbourne.

The reviews confirm as much: The Guardian advises that, “Now is the time to grab this chance to see the great man work.” The Scotsman says that, “He creeps up on you and ambushes your funny bone like no one else.” STV declares that his show offers, “Top-drawer stuff from a comedian who just seems to get better and better.” While The Sun simply describes Rich as, “A comedy phenomenon.” Quite.

The stand-up, who was the inspiration for the curmudgeonly barman Moe Szyslak in The Simpsons, says he gets a kick out of touring this country. “I may have become overly familiar with the motorway service stations of the UK, but I really like discovering new places. It’s important to visit out of the way towns because it gives you a new perspective.”

One of the many aspects that distinguishes Rich’s live act is the brilliant way he can craft delightful on-the-spot songs out of the smallest items of information that he gleans from the audience.

“If you told me I would have to listen to anyone – apart from Richard Pryor – on stage for two hours, I’d think, ‘Oh God’. So it’s good to break up the show with musical interludes.”

Rich continues that he does not need a lot of material to work on. “It’s funny, the less I get from people, the more you can improvise. Nothing is out of bounds. I want them to tell me, ‘I’m a clerk,’ rather than, ‘I work for the council finance department and am involved in the end of year expenditure’. As soon as I hear the word ‘clerk’, my head immediately starts formulating rhymes for it.”

The fuel that powers Rich’s act is a marvellous sense of simmering fury. Appearing regularly on Stand Up for the Week, QI, Live At The Apollo, Have I Got News For You and Never Mind the Buzzcocks, the stand-up gets riled by, “The level of incompetence and amount of crap in the world. I’m also incensed by the fact that we are all turning into button-pushing squirrels. That has brought about a serious loss of personality in this impersonal, digitised world.”

Also a very accomplished documentary maker who has fronted six critically acclaimed BBC4 programmes focusing on US popular culture and the Wild West, including Rich Hall’s Inventing The Indian, Rich Hall’s You Can Go to Hell, I’m Going to Texas and Rich Hall's Californian Stars the stand-up is equally angry about the bythe-yard, rote nature of so many comedians’ material these days.

He says that, “What is exasperating is that as comedians we live by the word. I see that very swiftly deteriorating, and I find it really scary. There doesn’t seem to be any appreciation any more of the written and spoken word. Everything is turning into shorthand. When a comedian like Dylan Moran gets on stage and speaks in his own very distinctive language, that really appeals to me.

“But nowadays a lot of performers are simply acting out the role of comedian and going through the motions. They use a very predictable cadence of comedy – ‘here

comes the punchline’. But in order to have a very individual way of saying things, you need to perfect that live.”

Of course, Rich is not that irate in reality – it is simply a persona he adopts for comic effect on stage. The comedian, whose latest audio, “Waitin’ on a Grammy”, is available to buy on CD and download now from http://store.offthekerb.co.uk, says that, “It works because people know that I’m not really that angry. Anyone that angry should not be doing comedy. With my style of slowburn comedy, the crowd know that you can’t be that worked up.

“I’m not really angry at all. There are very small outward changes in my emotions. I have a sort of deadpan Walter Matthau visage. People think, ‘This guy looks grumpy’, but that’s just how my face is put together. Your comic demeanour has to match your face. Most comedians fit their face.”

Rich, who in the past was a regular on Saturday Night Live, has enjoyed particular success in this country, where his trademark downbeat style really strikes a chord. The comedian reflects that, “British audiences are always very appreciative of the spoken word.”

The stand-up adds that, “People here also find it refreshing that I’m very detached from America. I’m not waving a flag or pretending that I’m hipper than you because I happen to be from the US. You get that a lot from American comedians.

Rich enjoys the fact that, “Brits like to insult you. Sometimes they come to the stage door after the show and say, ‘We really prefer Lee Mack.’ They don’t even say, ‘We really enjoyed your show – you’re our second favourite behind Lee Mack’! But I know the subtext – they must quite like me if they have waited in line to insult me!”

Finally, Rich reiterates how much he is relishing the idea of playing to British audiences once more and receiving our rapt attention. He concludes that, “You have someone’s complete attention, which is almost impossible nowadays. You can’t go to a sports event without someone Tweeting about it every five seconds.”

He adds that, “People don’t even listen to President Obama speaking without looking at their phones all the time. So maybe those two hours when I’m up there on stage provide a respite from all of us slowly turning into gadget-pedalling robots.” “If that’s the case, then it’s pretty cool!”

Rich Hall - ‘3:10 to Humour’ visits Middleton Arena at 8pm on Thursday 18 June. Tickets from www.middletonarena.com by calling 0844 855 4020. Or collect in person at the arena box office. www.rochdalestyle.com

THE MAKE

OR BREAK YEAR FOR

HONDA

Cast your mind back to New Year’s Day, that grey, damp, cold, hungover day that heralded the start of the year. Remember the sense of trepidation and anticipation of the twelve months ahead; all your hopes, dreams and fears for the next 365 days laid out in your mind? Well multiply that by a hundred and you pretty much have the state of mind of the executives at Honda as they prepare to launch a myriad of new models.

HONDA JAZZ Arriving in the summer the new Jazz has some big shoes to fill as its predecessors enjoyed an excellent reputation for its ownership experience. It was a fun little car that was reliable, spacious and comfortable. Like most new cars at the moment, the third generation Jazz will be slightly larger than the outgoing model with the extra space being used to make the cabin larger. There will be a new flexible seat option so that owners can change the balance between cargo and passenger space in just a few moments. I’ve only had a brief sit inside the new car but I can tell you that it is unrecognisable from either of the two previous incarnations of the Jazz. Most of the gizmos are controlled from the 7” touch screen in the centre of the dash. Although an optional extra on the base model, the Jazz will come with a range of safety systems such as 28

www.rochdalestyle.com

lane departure warning, intelligent cruise control and a system to recognise traffic warning signs. At launch, just one engine will be available, a 100bhp 1.3-litre petrol unit with a peppier 1.5-litre petrol joining the range later on. Interestingly, there will not be a replacement for either the diesel or hybrid-petrol petrol options.

HONDA HRV The new Honda HRV has been designed to fill a gap in the Honda range for a small SUV. Using the same underpinnings as the Jazz, the HRV will be launched later this year to challenge the Nissan Juke, which has ruled the market for the past few years.

The disappointing news is that it will only be available in the UK as front-wheel-drive, which means that it remains to be seen if the new car will have the off-road-prowess its predecessor had.

Looking like a smaller version of its popular CR-V, the new Honda avoids the love-it-or-hate-it looks of its principle challenger with smooth lines and a contemporary finish.

CIVIC TYPE-R Growing up in the 80’s when the hot hatch market was at its zenith, I have always had a real soft spot for warmed over variants of a standard family hatchback. After being made virtually extinct in the 90’s, thanks to the enhanced insurance premiums caused by thefts, it’s great to see the genre is back and in better shape than ever. VW’s Golf R is sublime, and later this year Ford will be bringing us an RS version of its latest Focus and now the fantastic news that there will be a Type-R version of the new Civic. The Civic Type-R was always like the pretty but quiet girl at in the corner at a party, you noticed her alright but there was always something more flashy to attract your attention. The new Type-R however has put on a party dress, glammed up and is ready to take centre stage. The wide wheel arches, large rear spoiler and front air splitter really give Type-R presence but, for me, it’s what is under the bonnet that counts. From just a 2.0-litre, albeit heavily turbo-charged engine, Honda has managed to find over 300bhp. This would be impressive in itself but it’s the fact that the engine is a Honda i-VTec, one of my all-time favourite power units thanks to its free-revving nature that means there is always power on tap and a redline which normally only kicks in when other engines would have long quit and gone home.

MCLAREN-HONDA MP4-30 After a seven-year absence, Honda are back in F1 with the McLaren team with whom they enjoyed incredible success in the 1980’s. Honda’s contribution to the partnership is the 1.6-litre turbo-charged V6 hybrid powertrain which should put out around 800bhp but as is usual in F1 circles, the actual figures are shrouded in secrecy. What is no secret however is that McLaren Honda have struggled in pre-season testing so it will be interesting to see how World Champions Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button manage as the team get to grips with getting the best out of the car over the season. Mark D’Apice

It’s no secret that the old Type-R struggled with torque steer so it will be interesting to see how the new model copes with this when even more power is going through the front wheels. We will find out when it goes on sale this summer for a round £30k. 29

Hello Springtime!! Lighter nights – check. (Slightly) warmer temperatures – check. The urge to purchase something that is not woolly and black – check. Here’s where we come in. Three ways to update your wardrobe for spring…

…Ladies

1) PASTELS This trend pops up every year, with gorgeous, soft hues evoking pretty spring flowers and ice creams by the seaside. These muted colours look great with every skin tone which makes pastel clothes and accessories a super-simple way to supplement your wardrobe without having to think too much about it. Spring pastels provide a refreshing antidote for the darker shades and heavier fabrics we wear in winter, especially when paired with lighter fabrics like chiffon or soft cotton. And of course they look great for all these spring time activities like picnics in the park and walks through the countryside we’ve got planned…weather permitting! HOW TO WORK DREAMY PASTELS… v If the idea of head-to-toe strawberry milkshake pink sounds a little extreme, start small with like a boxy handbag or scarf, or choose individual pieces in one pastel colour, and pair with neutrals. v Does the sound of understated sky-blue or pale primrose yellow just sound way too sweet and girly? To toughen up the pastel trend, choose clothing in a sugary shade but with a slightly masculine edge, or in a heavier material, such as a leather jacket or ripped jeans. Mix it up a little! v Our favourite pastel shade this spring is lilac, because it is super-flattering on most skin tones, and looks fabulous on clothes, accessories or even your hair. Semi-permanent or temporary hair dyes make lilac hair a low-maintenance, minimum commitment option which add a different, uber-fashionable dimension to your look.

2) DENIM Every woman knows a great pair of jeans is a failsafe option for any social occasion. This spring, denim fashion etiquette dictates that white jeans are back, worn skinny, with rips, distressed, with heels, basically whatever you feel like! Like a breath of fresh spring air the white denim trend will transport you right through to autumn (while also looking fabuleuse with your new pastel pieces). There was also a nod to the 1970s, with flared wide leg jeans by Stella McCartney which look super flattering on pretty much every body shape. Boyfriend jeans and distressed, patchwork styles were also big hitters this season, which can be dressed up or worn casual with your existing wardrobe effortlessly.

3) FOOTWEAR Flats seem to be the way forward this spring, with both celebrities such as Cara Delevigne and Kim Kardashian, and designers like Marc Jacobs opting to point us in the direction of comfort over the crippling pain of stilettos (woohoo!). Whether classic Chuck Taylors are your thing, or sporty vintage 90s style Nike sneakers, pair them with dresses, skirts or jeans, and just make sure they’re white.

1970s Chuck Taylor All Star Collection

…And Gentlemen 1) HATS Catwalk trends for men’s fashion are not for the fainthearted, and sometimes not even for the ordinary guy at all. That’s what makes the humble hat a super way to add a little je ne sais quoi to your overall look without looking like a total fashion victim. Here are three styles bring your wardrobe bang up to date… b Flat cap. Yes, these have been around since before your grandfather used to wear them, but a flat cap is a great way to add a little interest to a simple jumper-jeans-brogues combo. Spotted on the Dolce and Gabbana 2015 catwalk, and also on David Beckham and Brad Pitt we’d say you’re in pretty illustrious company if you opt for one of these. b Bucket hat. Apparently not just for 90s guitar bands and football hooligans, the bucket hat is great for these long-awaited sunny days the MET office is promising. Wear with casual jeans, t-shirt and trainers, to lend a little indie cool to your style. b Fedora. Effortlessly cool, and to be found all over the high street, the fedora adds a little sophistication to your look and looks great paired with a crisp white shirt and a sharp pair of jeans. Band membership optional.

Adidas Originals Stan Smith

2) TRAINERS As seen on the ladies trend list, sports footwear popped up on both the catwalk and on the street for men’s spring fashion. And as with the ladies, sneakers were paired with pretty much any kind of attire, from sharp tailored coats and blazers, to jeans, to relaxed casualwear, with the classic Stan Smith by Adidas being a particular favourite.

3) DENIM Perennially in vogue, denim is a fabric which is durable, comfortable and eminently wearable. A denim shirt is a great addition to your wardrobe this spring, worn open over a plain white tee or buttoned up with a tie and suit to add a fashionable, quirky twist to a smart look. Denim jackets are another way to update your existing wardrobe and give a tshirt and chinos permutation a stylish refresh.

Spring

beauty tips

SUN-KISSED GLOW - Ok so the weather isn’t great enough to give us that Brazilian bronzed skin, but there are many ways to get a sun kissed glow safely and inexpensively from the comfort of your salon or bathroom.

If your summer holidays feel like forever away, then fake it! There are lots of methods of tanning the skin safely using tanning lotions, oils, mousse or spray tan. I would recommend St Tropez and their range of DIY self tan solutions to suit everyone.

If you would rather leave it to the professionals there are two options; spray tanning or manual application tan. Spray tanning is a quick and easy option but requires some at-home preparation.

If you book a manual application tan you will be exfoliated and moisturised from head to toe and your tan will be applied carefully ensuring no streaks. This is the perfect solution for brides - as Kate Moss, ambassador for St Tropez, beautifully illustrated on her very own wedding day.

PERFECT BROWS - If you have never treated your brows then this is the perfect time to make the most of your eyes. Brows that are shaped and groomed make all the difference in framing the eye area. There are several options when it comes to taming those brows, such as waxing, threading and tweezing. HD Brows (£25) is a great idea as it incorporates all of these methods to give you the best brow shape possible. The HD Brow process involves tinting the vellus white hairs above and below your natural brow to give the brow specialist more hair to work with. The brows are then finished with revolutionary brow make up products to enhance your newly shaped brows. RIGHT COLOUR FOUNDATION- Too often in salons we see clients who are wearing a foundation that is not the correct colour for their skin tone. Incorrect foundation doesn’t just have to be too dark it can also be too light and make the skin look pale and flat. A common mistake is to test a

patch of foundation on the back of the hand, as this will almost always result in a poor colour match. Foundation should be tested on the jawline - if the foundation appears to ‘disappear and blend in’ then this is the correct colour for you. I love HD Brows Fluid Foundation (£32), which applies beautifully - there is no need for a primer or powder so it is a great 3-in-1 foundation. For a more sheer, natural foundation I would recommend powder foundations, which apply a sheer coverage which you can build to a fuller coverage. If foundations really aren’t your thing then I would recommend a CC Cream (complexion corrective cream) which offer a flawless complexion in a lightweight easy to apply cream - great for natural beauties or for full make up girlies who fancy a day off! IMAGINATIVE NAIL ART - The fashion this spring is nail art - be as bold and as daring as you like - let your nails to do the talking. From pressed pigments to paints and stamps… the possibilities are endless.

Why not let your nail artist hand paint nail designs personal to you. You could bring a picture, a favourite dress/outfit, a piece of jewellery – anything for inspiration; give your nails personality this spring. GLOWING SKIN – Looking in the mirror this season your skin is most probably crying out for some TLC. It may be showing signs of redness and sensitivity due to the bitter cold temperatures and central heating we have subjected it the past few months. It might be showing signs of dehydration in the form of small fine lines or looking dull and sallow. These complaints can be rectified with regular facials and a good skin regime at home – this means no face wipes ladies! A professional facial will thoroughly cleanse the skin, remove impurities and leave you with a new, polished, glowing complexion… a fabulous idea if your skin needs a boost this spring! Emma Fitton

A STYLISH CHANGE OF HANDS

and growing. Laura started up business on her own 21 years ago as Nails and Things, then with the help of her husband Howard Nails and Things grew and evolved into The Retreat we know and love today.

Style chats to Emma Fitton, the new owner of The Retreat, to discuss her exciting future plans for the popular St Marys Gate salon… How long have you been at The Retreat? I started working at the salon as a business graduate and took on the role of business manager taking care of the setting up of the new venture - the day spa. I managed the day to day running of both the salon and spa and thoroughly enjoyed it. Why did you decide to take over the business? After my maternity leave I was ready for a new challenge and the opportunity arose for me to take on The Retreat as my own - I grabbed the opportunity with both hands. The Retreat is a fantastic award winning salon that Laura (Prime) devoted her life, from the age of 19 years old, to building

I am honoured that Laura and Howard have entrusted me to continue growing and developing their venture to ensure The Retreat remains one of the best salons and day spas in the area. I work with a team of fantastic therapists who are all highly skilled and professional and so friendly that we all work together like one big family.

Emma would like to take this opportunity to welcome clients old and new to The Retreat. As part of the celebrations the salon are

Welcome to Rochdale Style’s wedding guide. In these pages you will find many local independent retailers and venues, which all provide a high quality Style-approved service. You’ll also find plenty of advice and money saving tips for your big day. the average wedding now costs £22,000 according to experts. starting your married life with huge debts is not an ideal situation so instead of stretching beyond your limits, look at other ways to cut costs… First, work out a budget you can afford. once you know your budget, you’ll need to prioritise. Discuss what’s most important to both of you. Maybe you want to splash out on a honeymoon abroad or a professional photographer? or does a stunning venue top your wish list? trade one item for another to see how far that budget will stretch. if it doesn't go as far as you want, you need to change your list but not your budget.

think outside the box. Keep in mind that you don't need to stick to convention or have everything you're told you need. Do things a little differently… have a buffet or barbeque instead of a sit-down meal or make a playlist of your favourite songs instead of booking a band or DJ. Plan your wedding as you’d like it and don’t worry too much about what you should be doing. trimming the guest list can save you thousands. Remember that it’s your day, not anyone else’s. Don’t feel guilty if you have to miss a few people out due to budget or venue restrictions… you can always invite them to the evening reception. Pick an unpopular season or date to get married. getting hitched outside of peak season or Mondays to thursdays can cut the cost of the reception venue by up to half. Many wedding suppliers, including

photographers, florists and any live entertainment will also offer discounts.

Haggle! Many Brits have come to accept that haggling is rude and think prices are set in stone. the truth is most wedding suppliers, especially independent ones, are open to negotiation. and if there’s no chance of a discount, see if they will chuck in something else for free… there’s no harm in asking!

Make use of talented friends & family. Do you know a DJ, photographer, baker, hairdresser, make-up artist, musician or perhaps someone with a posh car?! ask if they’ll lend a hand as a wedding gift or at ‘mate’s rates’.

Free sites including google Weddings and Hitched let you be your own wedding planner. google lets you keep tabs of the estimated costs versus the actual costs. additional tools help you organise the seating plan, guest list, menu and music playlist. Hitched offers similar tools, but also includes ideas on decoration, dresses and more.

get crafty! Make your own table decorations and invites. Pinterest is a fantastic and easy-to-use website and app for ideas. Use it for DiY inspiration and to set up mood boards. sharing your Pinterest board with close family and friends is also a great way to encourage them to be a part of your wedding planning.

Photographs (Courtesy Howard Wilkinson Photography)

Promising everything you need to organise your perfect wedding with the help of the regions finest suppliers, the day will feature a breathtaking catwalk show and over 60 experts specialising in everything from stunning dresses and cakes to classic cars and entertainment.

Last year’s event, organised by Rochdale Borough Council attracted over 400 guests, and organisers are promising something extra special in 2015. Event Manager Sue Milne said: “Feedback from exhibitors and visitors last time was fantastic. Rochdale Wedding Show 2015 will be another fabulous showcase for some wonderful local companies and a great day out for brides and grooms, their friends and families. Visitors will get the chance to see our newly refurbished Register Office, view the ceremony room and take a town hall tour. The Grade 1 town hall is always a popular wedding venue and its picturesque gardens are the perfect backdrop for the all-important photos, so it’s an ideal location for the show.” A limited amount of spaces are still available for 2015. sPotLigHt ON heYWooD Meet the Mayor…

A recent quiz night in aid of the mayoral charity

Last year’s 1940s weekend in Heywood

Heywood seems to be bucking the national trend when it comes to empty shops on the high street.

If a shop does become empty it isn’t long before its reoccupied and the latest new business to join the busy Heywood high street is fabulous ladies boutique Lily May. The same can be said of Heywood Magic Market, which is open Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and has a range of interesting and varied stalls. At a time when many other markets are failing, Heywood market is busy and very popular with the local community; with trader occupancy at 90%.

Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Carol Wardle was first elected for the former Heywood South ward in 2002. Carol was formerly a governor of Bullough Moor Primary School, Birtle View and Newlands Special School. She has been a director of Heywood Magic Market since 2003. Carol has four daughters, three grandchildren, and her hobbies include crosswords, foreign travel and country pursuits. Carol’s mayoral charity has so far raised over £20,000.

Forthcoming fundraising events...

Sun 26th April - Metal detecting rally at land off Whittle Lane from 9am until 2pm. £10 each.

Sat 2nd May - 60s night with local group The Ambassadors, tickets are priced at £15 including supper. 7pm until midnight, tickets available from Dorothy Johnstone at the Town Hall.

We provide computer services covering all areas and are a well established family run business.

On stage at Heywood Civic Centre

Heywood also has a variety of entertainment on offer at Heywood Civic Centre where you can see live shows, as well as attend anything from sequence dancing to Zumba classes and even regular meetings for Slimming World.

Heywood 1940s War Weekend is now a regular event held in June each year and attracts thousands of visitors to Heywood. This year the fantastic family event will be held over the weekend of 20th June 2015.

“The move to refurbish the empty and disused pub has been a great move for us in many ways. Having worked from home previously this move to our own offices created a much more professional impression, not only for clients but for local professionals such as accountants & solicitors. It has been an interesting past few years being thrown into project managing the refurbishment which was a longer and more-expensive job than we anticipated. We have four other businesses as tenants: two accountants, a fire security company and Virtual Typing Services. We have also expanded and now have a mortgage arm CTL Mortgages with Tom lawlor and have Ashley as admin support. There is plenty to keep us busy on the business front with Auto-enrolment starting to impact some of the smaller firms this year. We also have pensions’ freedoms which has brought about significant changes to how people access their pension pot. Our clients are usually business owners and these changes will have a serious impact for them. I don’t think some businesses have yet grasped how important these changes are and the work that they have to do to get ready for Auto-enrolment. I’m also proud of the fact that I have passed the Certificate in Pensions Auto- Enrolment through the Pensions Management Institute, one of the few advisers in the area to have this qualification. I am hoping that particularly the local accountants will value this when looking at how they will deal with autoenrolment for their clients. We aim to be the first choice for business owners & professionals in Greater Manchester. We are supportive of the local area and community and have run the Rochdale Business Curry Club for 6 years. We are also members of Rochdale Rugby Union Business Club and recently sponsored a match on March 14th. This year we have decided to join the Heywood in Bloom organisation and so all being well, the offices will be full of colour and be a welcome sight for people passing the office.”

DID YOU KNOW It is a legal requirement and every employer in the UK will be affected. Testimonial "We deliberately picked a local IFA who had a focus on dealing with local businesses like ourselves. It has been a complicated matter we have several companies within our group but CTL Wealth have helped us all the way." Julie Bowmer Managing Director of Likahea Holdings Ltd WHICH STEP WILL TRIP YOU UP? We are offering bespoke & project management solutions for Auto Enrolment. Auto Enrolment will have a massive impact on all employers but you don't have to do it alone. CTL Wealth will provide a solution that means you stay focussed on building your business - not running your pension scheme.

Cenetta has opened in the venue which previously housed the Fallen Angels. Following a full refurbishment, Cenetta offers Italian cuisine with some Mediterranean flourishes. The wine list is mainly Italian, with a few bottles from around the world. Continental beers, Italian cider and soft drinks give the drinks menu a modern, authentic feel. Deckers Managing Director Max Brierley said, “I’m so pleased with the refurbishment, and the restaurant is looking stunning. We have successfully addressed the lighting issues which are considerable in a venue with no source of natural light. The team have worked very hard to get Cenetta ready, and I’m sure the investment we have made, will make Cenetta an attractive, popular restaurant for our guests to enjoy.”

Peacock Room Chef Scott Evans was declared the winner of the Deckers Hospitality Group’s chef competition for the second time. Scott became the first chef to win the title twice and in doing so won himself a 64GB Ipad Mini. The announcement was made at a celebratory dinner held in the Peacock Room where sponsors, and guests were treated to some of the standout dishes from the contest this year. This event allows chefs from the Rochdale based group to step out of their usual busy kitchens into the intense arena of competition cooking. Tested on their ingredient knowledge, technical ability, and ability to create restaurant standard dishes from mystery ingredients. Group head chef Rob Walker said, “It’s great to see the creativity and level of ability we as a group have within our kitchen teams... It was a very close final, with Paul Nelson (The Royal Toby), Stephen Taylor (The Conservatory) and last year’s winner Brendan Murphy (The Conservatory) very worthy finalists.”

SEARED VENISON FILLET WITH PINK PEPPERCORNS AND TOASTED SESAME Venison is so in Vogue at the moment. Low in cholesterol, high in protein and really tasty!! SERVES 2 2 x 200g loins of venison – trimmed 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon pink peppercorns 1 tablespoon mustard seeds 1 tablespoon sesame seeds 1 tablespoon olive oil TO SERVE Mixed salad leaves Shizu cress (optional) Few pink peppercorns 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil 1 lime METHOD 1) Take each loin of venison and smear with the Dijon mustard and a good grinding of salt and pepper. 2) Mix together the peppercorns, mustard seeds and sesame seeds and roll each venison fillet in the mixture – pressing the seeds against the venison so they stick. 3) Heat the olive oil in a frying pan, not too hot and seal the venison fillet on all sides, turning as the seeds get toasted. Remove from the pan and leave to cool, then wrap in food wrap and refrigerate until ready to serve. 4) When ready to serve remove the venison from the food wrap and slice into thin slices – it should be charred on the outside but still very pink in the middle. 5) Arrange the venison on a plate served with your favourite salad leaves tossed in vinaigrette. Finish with a scattering of pink peppercorns, a drizzle of toasted sesame oil and a squeeze of fresh lime. CELEBRITY Rochdale Chef Andrew Nutter

Members of the Rock Choir from Norden, Littleborough and Middleton got the chance to go to Abbey Road Studios earlier this year. Altogether, 150 members of the choir travelled to the studio with choir leader Phil Reynolds to record a number of tracks. Speaking about the experience, Phil said: “Everyone really enjoyed it and some of those who went along are still giddy about it now so it has gone down really well. Certainly a once in a lifetime thing.” “We have two shows at Birmingham Arena in June and then some more local things coming up but this has been the biggest thing we have done and probably will do… Some choir members even got to meet Liam Gallagher on the train so they have really had a rock and roll experience,” added Phil.

ROCHDALE DENTAL PRACTICE WINS PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL AWARD

FREEMASON’S DONATION

Waterside Dental Care on Yorkshire Street in Rochdale has just been voted practice of the year for Best Patient Care at the national Dentistry Awards in Leicester.

The Rochdale Food Bank has received a helping hand from the Freemasons of Rochdale. As part of their charitable efforts, the Rochdale District Freemasons, donated £1025 to the food bank. Manager, Margaret Wight said: “We are very grateful because obviously it will be of great benefit to the people we serve. We see people who have got into difficulties when there is a change in their circumstances or problems with their benefits. They are in a desperate situation, with a family to feed and nothing in the house." Donations of non-perishable, nutritious food are always welcomed at the Food Bank.

The practice went head to head with some of the best practices in the region to scoop the North West Award and then went one step further to scoop the National Award for Best Patient Care. Practice owner Dr Pam Coates said the team were thrilled to win such a prestigious award and delighted that their attention to patient care had been recognised. The practice provides high quality general and cosmetic dental and facial treatments for patients across the region, particularly those who are nervous yet want to smile with confidence.

Grimethorpe Colliery Band coming to Middleton Arena

The multi award winning Grimethorpe Colliery Band will be performing at Middleton Arena later this year during their 2015 tour.

Since then they’ve toured the globe, including shows at the World Cup, Eurovision and major music festivals. More recently the band was seen in action by a worldwide audience of 2.5 billion during the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony alongside the London Symphony Orchestra, in Danny Boyle’s epic production. 64

Middleton Arena Entertainments Manager Graham Duckworth said: “The history of Grimethorpe has become legendary… a story full of drama and success in the face of adversity, unmatched by any other brass band in the world, and we are excited to announce they will be performing here at the arena. I know their live shows are spectacular so it will be a rare opportunity to see and hear the cream of brass bands.” Grimethorpe Colliery Band – ‘Brassed Off’ is at Middleton Arena on Sunday 13 September at 3pm.
