MOTORING ON FURTHER EXPANSION FOR LOCAL COMPANY

In our Summer 2009 issue of Style magazine we ran a feature on MKS Automotive Ltd being awarded the Mitsubishi Franchise for Rochdale. A local company headed by directors Zulf and Imi Ahmed, added Rochdale Mitsubishi to their existing motor trade businesses, Rochdale Suzuki and M Kar Subaru. Six months later and the company has grown again! Spreading their wings further a field to Manchester, October 2009 saw the launch of two new businesses, Manchester Suzuki and Manchester Mitsubishi. Based on the A56 Bury New Road, Manchester, in superbly refurbished premises and just 2 minutes from the city centre, both dealerships offer the full range of franchised dealer services, including the sale of new and used vehicles, servicing, MOT and supply of genuine parts. As well as pre-owned Mitsubishi’s and Suzuki’s, the impressive forecourt holds a selection of over 70 used vehicles including Fords, Vauxhalls and Toyotas. The sales operation is complemented by a state of the art after sales facility, boasting twenty work shop bays and the latest diagnostic equipment.

Managing Director Zulf Ahmed said “Our motor trade division has seen excellent growth this year and the group now employs over 100 members of staff in four key locations and turnover is expected to reach £27M in 2010. Clearly the addition of Manchester Mitsubishi and Suzuki further strengthens our relationship with the manufacturers we represent. This is also fabulous news for our prospective customers as we now have the ability to negotiate enhanced terms for the new vehicles we purchase and can pass these savings on to our customers.” MKS Automotive Ltd would like to invite you to visit the dealerships where you will be warmly welcomed and can view all the latest models available. The dedicated sales teams are on hand to offer advice and deliver excellent customer care every step of the way.

Actress Shobna Gulati OLDHAM BORN ACTRESS, SHOBNA GULATI, IS BEST kNOWN FOR PLAYING SUNITA ALAHAN IN CORONATION STREET, FROM 2001 UNTIL 2006. AFTER A WELL-EARNED, FOUR YEAR BREAk SHE MADE HER RETURN TO THE COBBLES AT THE END OF LAST YEAR.

S

hobna is also famous for her role as Anita, in Victoria Wood’s BBC sitcom, dinnerladies. She recently reprised this role with a UK theatre tour of the comedy. Her numerous theatre credits also include a UK tour of the hit play, Girls Night, by Louise Roche.

What is it like playing Sunita? I love playing sunita, even though she can be a bit of a silly girl. she’s a very nice person and very warm and tender. But in recent months, she has developed a little fire in her… so watch this space! Don’t be fooled with the nice exterior!

The actress also has a degree in Arabic and Middle-Eastern politics, speaks six languages and is a vocal supporter of women's rights and various anti-racism campaigns.

How has Sunita changed in the four years she has been away from the street? I think she’s become a woman. she’s had the twins to bring up after all.

I caught up with Shobna to discuss life back on the Street, crazy fans and what the future holds for Sunita and Dev.

Are there any similarities between you and Sunita? We look fairly similar! But we don’t wear the same clothes and I never wear makeup. and we definitely don’t go for the same men!

What is the best thing about being back in Corrie? The best thing is being back around the wonderful cast and crew. It’s a very nice job – hard work but it’s got a real team spirit about it and I love being part of the team.

Who is your best mate on set? Kate Ford who plays Tracey Barlow. she’s just returned to the street, although our paths haven’t crossed during filming yet. I think we will have scenes together soon though! How did you get into acting? It was nearly 25 years ago now! I started as a dancer and I was also a model for a period of time. I modelled in Paris, working with a designer and modelling Haute Couture. I really enjoyed it but it didn’t stimulate me enough to just

were agents in the audience and afterwards, I was approached by one who said I was the funniest thing on stage! By the time I was 29, I had auditions for both Coronation street and dinnerladies. at first, I had an interview for Corrie to play Mike Baldwin’s solicitor, which the casting director said I was too young for. she mentioned my name to Victoria Wood, which helped me land the role of anita in dinnerladies. You recently finished a UK theatre tour of dinnerladies. How did that go? It was great and I loved being back in my tabard! But it’s a tough job being on the road with 8 shows a week… and I did 25 weeks! I love comedy and live performance. I live for it. If Coronation street was live I would love it even more!

continue with that. also, at that time, in the eighties, there were very few models of my ethnicity, so it was tough. Modelling is a very tough industry to be in.

You have a 15 year old son, Akshay. Is he catching the acting bug? Yes he loves singing, dancing and acting! I think he will want to go to drama school. I’ve told him it’s a difficult industry but i’ll support him all the way, in whatever he wants to do.

When I was about 26 years old, I did this piece at Theatre royal stratford east where I was a member of the dance troupe. I had some specific featured dances and two speaking parts – a ditzy secretary and a policewoman. There

Rumour has it that you’re now a filmmaker? I’m very interested in direction and the way film is shot. I was commissioned by a company to make a one-minute film, which I did and I put my son in it! It’s

quite tough making a short film, because obviously you shoot quite a lot and you’ve got to fit it all into one minute, whilst trying to get the story across. I’d like to apply for another commission soon, to hopefully shoot a 3-minute film. and we’ll see what happens from there! Sunita is a well-loved character on the street. Do you have any crazy fans? Yes, i’ve got a group of lads, who keep asking me to send them my underwear! They invite me on holiday and everything too… I haven’t been though! Nor have I sent them my underwear!! Will it be happily ever after for Sunita and Dev? Watch this space with sunita and Dev. They’re going to be in and out of love for a while. It’s just a very exciting time, because Dev doesn’t really know whether he’s coming or going, and sunita has got to learn to trust him. There will be some shenanigans going on!

ROCHDALE CLINIC IS A FAVOURITE WITH CELEBRITIES!

A

dvanced Hair & Skin Clinic based on Yorkshire street in Rochdale has become a big hit with celebrities including Shobna Gulati and Sarah-Jane Potts. Shobna was back on our screens in December as Sunita Alahan in Coronation street, she has been a client at the clinic since it opened back in 2007. Sarah-Jane Potts recently joined the cast of Waterloo road as Jo Lipsett, a new teacher at the school and was previously in channel 4’s Sugar Rush and the 2005 British comedy film Kinky boots.

Both celebrities are big fans of the clinics Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) hair removal treatment which destroys the hairs follicle which means it can not produce new hair. 6-8 treatments are required every 6 weeks and if the hairs are dark in colour the majority will be removed. The clinic offers a free consultation and test patch to all new clients. Another favourite treatment at the clinic is the Juvederm ULTRA dermal filler. Juvederm ULTRA is a smooth consistency gel made of hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. It is injected under the skin to instantly restore your skin's volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds, like marionette lines-lines from corners of the lip or nasolabial folds—the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth. Juvederm ULTRA can also be used for lip augmentation to plump and define the lips.

Embarrassed of your legs? AHSC offer Sclerotherapy, this treatment recently featured on Channel 4’s Embarrasing Bodies. Sclerotherapy treats thread veins on the legs, the treatment consists of tiny injections into the veins which will irritate the vein wall and on compression will close the veins and fade. It is a safe and well established treatment performed by the clinic nurse.

If you are looking to truly shine and knock 10 years off your face the Advanced Hair & Skin Clinic offer Botox, skin rejuvenation and resurfacing peels…all designed to erase signs of premature aging, brighten the skin and smooth the complexion. !!! The clinic is open Tuesday to Saturday with 3 late nights. AHSC are fully registered with the Healthcare Commission and only employ qualified experienced staff.

A trip on the East Lancashire Railway is a journey back in time. It was opened in 1846 to link the Manchester to Bolton line with Radcliffe and was a popular passenger and freight route, which served the Irwell Valley from Bury, via Ramsbottom, to Rawtenstall and beyond. 1972 saw the last passengers travel on the Bury to Rawtenstall section and that would have been the end of an era had the East Lancashire Preservation Society not been committed to restoring the line to its former glory. With assistance from Bury and Rossendale Councils, the line was reopened in 1991. The traditional station buildings and developments along the tracks have contributed to the Society being presented with a number of environmental awards. Work continued to finally complete the railways extension to Heywood, which reopened to passengers in 2003. The line is over 12 miles long and runs between Heywood and Rawtenstall, with intermediate stations at Bury, (4 miles from Heywood) and Ramsbottom, (8 miles from Heywood). Unstaffed Halts are provided between Bury and Ramsbottom at Summerseat and between Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall at Irwell Vale. The journey between Heywood and Rawtenstall takes approximately one hour in each direction. From Heywood, the line descends Broadfield bank

and after crossing the M66 and the River Roch the line climbs towards Bury town centre and the Irwell valley. On leaving Bury, the line commences the long climb up the valley via Ramsbottom, crossing the River Irwell nine times, before reaching the terminus at Rawtenstall. The Railway operates every weekend throughout the year and mid-week services operate during School Easter Holidays and from May to mid September. The Railway operates a full calendar of events, from March through to December. You can view a full timetable of events and train times on their website www.east-lancs-rly.co.uk. Style magazine visited the station during their fantastic 1940's weekend last year, which this year is over the bank holiday weekend of 29 -31 May. www.rochdalestyle.com

Theatre Royal, Rochdale Rochdale Hippodrome Theatre 1913 decorated for the visit of King George V and Queen Mary

As leisure time expanded, The Coliseum Cinema opened in 1911, with a seating capacity of over 1400. It was situated next to the Palace Roller Skating Rink on High Level Road. Both the rink and the cinema were owned by cinema magnates, J.F. Moore and Monty Beaudyn. Musical and dramatic entertainment was plentiful in the town, through the medium of the Empire, Hippodrome and Theatre Royal. when the old Circus and Hippodrome(pictured) closed in 1908, the new Hippodrome on newgate, which was demolished in the 1970's, opened in the same year. 12

A

nother chapel, in Toad Lane, became a theatre in 1790, first named the Theatre Rochdale and later the Theatre Royal. Many famous celebrities of the day appeared there, including Franz Liszt, the renowned Hungarian composer & pianist and Grimaldi, a world famous Italian clown. Seats were expensive – Boxes 3/- Gallery 1/- but it was well attended in its early years. However, by 1865 the building was in a bad state of repair and was demolished. The Rochdale Pioneers Central Store was built on the site. Rochdale’s first music hall was named Jeffrey’s and opened in 1865 on Drake Street. The Music Hall tradition grew from the Singing Saloons and concerts enjoyed in local pubs. Th’Owd Circus was a wooden building erected in Newgate in 1882 for music hall, variety acts, melodramas and pantomimes. The best seats were only 1/-. In 1903, it showed the first animated pictures to be seen in Rochdale. In 1908, the old building was replaced by The Hippodrome; a modern well-equipped theatre, seating 1800 people. Many celebrities appeared there, including Charlie Chaplin, Dan Leno, Robb Wilton, George Formby, Sandy Powell and local star, Norman Evans. Gracie Fields recalled visiting The Hippodrome as a child with her mother who was a cleaner there and also took in the artist’s washing. Gracie used to stand on the stage herself at the age of seven at the Old Circus, when she won joint first place in a singing competition. Her prize was 10/-. Later she starred all

over the world as a great entertainer, but she had fond memories of The Hippodrome, describing it as her favourite theatre. Another early theatre venue was The Prince of Wales, built in 1867, at Town Meadows, near the site of the present Rochdale Police Station. This was an impressive building with seating for 1600 people. In 1883, the name was changed to The Theatre Royal. The shows offered were repertory, variety and pantomime. Sadly, in November 1954, after decades of entertainment for local theatre goers, a disastrous fire destroyed the building and it was not rebuilt. The development of the film industry and growth of local cinemas is a story in itself. Obviously, there was an impact on theatre attendances. Variety was not as popular and The Hippodrome became a cinema from 1930 until 1957. It then became a Bingo Hall and the venue for performances by local amateur societies such as Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society.

Founded in 1898, the society first performed at The Theatre Royal. There is a longstanding tradition of amateur theatre locally, often providing the training ground for future professional careers and stardom. The Curtain Theatre, founded in 1925 and The Phoenix Opera Society are just two further examples amongst many, of the valuable contribution of local players to the theatre scene. With the closure, then demolition, of The Hippodrome in the 1970’s, Rochdale lost its last Town Centre theatre venue. The Regal Cinema, now the Regal Moon, was used to stage shows by The Rochdale Amateurs until the Gracie Fields Theatre was opened in 1978. The star herself performed the ceremony. A well equipped theatre, it offers a varied programme of events to suit all tastes. However, the disadvantage to theatre goers is its position, away from the Town Centre. It is not on a direct bus route and not easily accessible to people without their own transport. It is hoped sometime in the near future there will be a venue in the Town Centre to uphold the past decades of live theatre tradition.n Margaret Clay

EdIToRS noTE My interest in performing started when I was in primary school, where we were encouraged by the teacher to improvise our own plays every Friday afternoon. It developed from there into school plays at senior school and then auditioning for my first role in a pantomime at Kirkholt Community Centre. I gained my first acting experience, at the age of twelve, in Kirkholt pantomime, Humpty dumpty. under the direction of Castleton Primary Headteacher, James Bleakley, performing in the annual pantomime was always a highlight of the year. The excellent Terry wild always played dame, with excellent costumes made by his mother. Jennifer Bentley had a great voice and legs to match as principal boy and Christine wintour was always superb as principal girl. In 1969, we decided to move the production of Mother Goose to The Hippodrome in Rochdale, where I played Priscilla the Goose and we played to full houses for the week commencing Monday 20 January. After catching the acting bug, I went on to pursue a career as a professional actor. I urge Style readers to support amateur theatre Poster for Kirkholt Community Association's across the borough, as this is where many young, production of Mother Goose, January 1969 budding performers find their feet. It is a shame that we no longer have any theatres in our town centre and I join the many people who would love Jennifer Bentley Principal Boy & to see a new entertainment venue, at the heart of Rochdale. Bridal Beauty

Countdown

Planning the biggest day of your life is a pretty big task and even though, as women, we are famed for our ability to multi task, when it comes to planning the big day make sure you stay in control and look after number one! Delegation is the keyword here, so don’t be afraid of taking time out to pamper yourself and ask others for a helping hand. Lets face it, nobody wants to attend a perfectly planned wedding with a stressed and tired, less than perfect looking bride at the heart of it.

S

o here is The Retreat’s beauty countdown, to help you stay in control and look perfect for your big day! 6 MONTHS TO GO You may think 6 months is a long way off the big day, but now is the time to get your skin in shape and to invest in a stricter beauty and skincare regime. Book your free Darphin Skin consultation at The Retreat, where our Darphin skin expert will carry out a skin consultation and prescribe you the perfect products in order to start your beauty programme, flawless, radiant skin on your big day. The easiest way to improve your skin’s health and appearance at home, in addition to using your skincare, is to drink plenty of water (eight glasses a day). It’s the single most effective (and cheapest!) way to hydrate, flush out toxins and guarantee a gorgeous glow. 5 MONTHS TO GO You should now be in the habit of cleansing, toning and moisturising every morning and night. Step it up a gear by adding a weekly exfoliation, such as Darphin’s Age Defying Dermabrasion and a radiance-enhancing mask, such as Darphin’s Youthful Radiance Camellia Mask to your regime. Also, invest in a good quality body scrub, such as Darphin’s Nourishing Smoothing Body Scrub and use every morning. Just think how beautiful and smooth your skin will be on your honeymoon! 4 MONTHS TO GO Treat yourself to a facial – it’s a great way to boost your at-home skincare regime and to have total relaxation and a bit of ‘me’ time! 3 MONTHS TO GO It’s time to start thinking about the kind of look you want to create with your hair and make-up. I would recommend having your hair and makeup done professionally to ensure a perfect look on the day and to avoid stress. Here at The 22

www.rochdalestyle.com

Retreat we offer a professional, wedding makeup service for the Bride and bridal party. If you are doing your own – and some brides prefer to – practice makes perfect. 8 WEEkS TO GO To tan, or not to tan? That is the question. Of course, a gorgeously sun-kissed glow can make you look healthy and radiant. The Retreat offer spray tans and full body St Tropez tans. Having a tan applied professionally ensures your tan is perfect, as a fake tanning disaster is the last thing you need! 7 WEEkS TO GO Its time to start getting your hands and nails ready for that all-important ring-on-the-finger moment. Regular manicures are a great way to keep your hands and nails in great shape. For great results, you should have a good homecare routine. Massage sweet almond oil into your cuticle s every night and if your nails are brittle, start to apply a nail strengthener. Also, get into the habit of using hand cream regularly. 6 WEEkS TO GO Time for a practise run! Arrange a trial appointment with your hair stylist and makeup artist to finalise your look. If you’re doing your own makeup and hair, arrange a girlie night with your bridesmaids and closest friends and do a practise run together. 5 WEEkS TO GO After months of wedding planning, it is likely that your body will appreciate a good, relaxing, tension release massage. Why not try our Hot Stone full body massage or Thai compress massage. 4 WEEkS TO GO Not long to go now! Take your mum out for the day and show her how much you appreciate her. Why not treat her to a special manicure? 3 WEEkS TO GO Enjoy some well-deserved ‘me’ time. Why not book in at The Retreat’s Spa and use our double hydrotherapy tub and aromatherapy steam pod to

soothe those aches and pains, release tension and clear your mind. 2 WEEkS TO GO If you colour your hair, this is the perfect time to have it done so it has time to settle, but not enough time for re-growth to appear. Have a trim as well to tidy up the shape of your hair. 1 WEEk TO GO The final flourishes! Have your eyebrows shaped and waxed - you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes. Have your eyelashes tinted and permed in preparation for your honeymoon, so you won’t need to worry with mascara on the beach and get your legs and bikini line waxed. THE DAY BEFORE Have your manicure or nail enhancements and your pedicure - this will give you the opportunity to completely chill out. Don’t wear any make-up today - you need to let your skin breathe. Exfoliate and use a radiance enhancing face mask and most importantly, get an early night! There you have it… The Retreat’s guide to a perfect de-stressed wedding and a radiant bride. If you would like to book your treatments in for your wedding day, book your free skin consultation or if you just have a question, please phone The Retreat on 01706 868 898, where one of our fully qualified friendly staff will be more than happy to help. COPACABANA

The Copa girl dancers had the audience mesmerized, during some brilliantly choreographed numbers; their stunning costumes adding to the effect. The male dancers also showed off their talents, with some very energetic routines.

Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society The Gracie Fields Theatre, Rochdale 16th-20th February 2010

The 13-piece band, under the direction of Paul Nicholls, remained visible behind the action throughout most of the production, adding greatly to the ambience of the nightclub scenes. The 20+ chorus made for some impressive numbers, even dancing into the audience for the finale. This feel-good musical certainly seemed to prove a hit with the audience and a fitting tribute to the memory of Jack Heaton, the society’s dedicated and long-standing President and Chairman.

Rochdale Amateur Operatic Society put on a spectacular production of Barry Manilow’s Copacabana, with many of the audience commenting that it was the society’s ‘best show yet’. 'Her name was Lola'...the unforgettable opening lyric of Barry Manilow's hit Copacabana, is the inspiration for this exciting musical tale, set at the heart of the swinging nightclub scene of the 1940s. While creating the world's next big hit, Stephen (Gary Jones), an aspiring songwriter, is carried back to an era when 'music and passion were always the fashion' at the world famous Copacabana nightclub in New York City.

The Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Keith Swift, commented that he ‘thoroughly enjoyed’ the opening night performance, adding, “it was an excellent show and a credit to all those involved”. .

Ruth Meredith

In his dream, Lola La Mar (Laura Hoyle), a hopeful showgirl, is launched on the path to stardom as a Copa Girl with the help of Tony Forte (Gary Jones). Captivated by her performance, the villainous Rico (Steve Harrison) whisks her away to the Tropicana nightclub in Havana. Laura Hoyle stole the show, putting in an exceptional performance, as Lola. Gary Jones deserves a special mention for not only giving a faultless leading man performance, but also directing and choreographing the production, alongside Assistant Director, Mike McCaw and Assistant Choreographer, Claire Egerton. Dawn Leigh was perfectly suited to the role of latino bombshell Conchita Alvarez and Steve Harrison captured the danger, but charm of his character, Rico Castelli. Tony Stones, as Sam Silver, and Nicky Mead, as Gladys Murphy, gave strong performances and Tom Varey had excellent comic timing as Willy the waiter.

DARLINg MR LONDON by Anthony Marriott and Bob Grant St Ann’s Players Parish Hall, Brocklebank Road, Rochdale 23rd-26th February 2010 St Ann’s Players first production in their newly refurbished church hall was the intricate farce Darling Mr London. The stage set was perfect. It had so many doors I was left wondering how on earth the cast managed to remember which way to turn! Ian Mansfield directed this fast-paced farce, which had the audience laughing long and loud. It was set in the 1970‘s home of Edward Hawkins and was full of over-thetop characters, absurd situations and mistaken identities. The characters arrive at the home of Edward Hawkins, played by Neil Bamford who impressed, keeping the manic momentum of the play throughout. The plot revolves around the arrival of the Miss Europhone contestants looking for their darling Mr. London. Edward valiantly tries to hide them and the truth from his wife Rose, played by the experienced Judith Mansfield. Throw in a curate Dave Stopford, who thinks the pompous brother-in-law Tim Keiley is a secret drinker, who in turn thinks 26

www.rochdalestyle.com

the curate is a secret drinker, lock the mother-in-law, Barbara Fielden, in the loo and you have a recipe for disaster and laughter. The production threw up some impressive performances from the Miss Europhone contestants, with Joanne Frost as Monique, Sue Howarth as Sylvana, Annette Nodwell as Ingrid and Christine Simpson as Snowdrop. It was a very enjoyable evening and proved a fitting tribute to the memory of relatively young, local actor, Andy McKay, who had entertained audiences locally in numerous productions; a very funny and talented man who will be sadly missed by many. Cinderella Rochdale Infirmary Players Falinge Park High School 5th-6th February 2010

Rochdale Infirmary Players are now known nationwide for the mention given to them at The British Soap Awards and The National Television Awards. Whilst collecting two awards for Best Newcomer, Former player Craig Gazey (Graeme, Coronation Street), thanked the group for giving him his first ever part, at the tender age of five.

and John Owen, as the Ugly Sisters, who bounced off each other with great confidence and professional comic timing. Julie Gronan, as the Prince and Craig Harrison, as Dandini, worked together well and added a little more seriousness to the production. The production’s chorus, juniors and dancers came across confidently in their respective singing and dancing routines, adding another dimension to the pantomime. Kelly Mooney, as The Fairy Godmother, weaved her magic throughout the evening, which was a credit to all concerned. The show had professional scenery, provided and stage managed by Graham Kershaw, from Prosceneium, in Littleborough and Littleborough costumier Frank Kershaw made the fabulous costumes. The proceeds of the show will be going to the Floyd Unit, Birch Hill Hospital Neurology Unit and the cast are to be congratulated on putting on such a polished production, after putting in long hours caring for patients. Colin Meredith

The audience were full of anticipation for the opening night of Cinderella, at Falinge High School and they were not disappointed. Director, Mary Kershaw, assembled a very strong cast, who grabbed the audience's attention from the very start. Cinderella was played with delightful charm, by Samantha Hayes and held the sympathy of the audience throughout. Reece Cole, as Buttons, showed great maturity in handling an audience and had the kids on his side from the very start. Dave Edwards was an excellent Baron Hardup, set upon constantly by the nagging Baroness Hardup, played by Kelly Fenton. The audience loved to hate Clive Hartley

Dick Whittington Starstruck Theatre School The Riverside, Whitworth 16th January 2010 Over sixty pupils, from Starstruck Theatre School, took part in the recent production of Dick Whittington, at The Riverside, Whitworth. The pantomime was a great success, with the pupils, aged 4-18 years old, performing to a sell-out audience. Sophie Ansley gave an impressive performance as Dick Whittington, alongside Lewis Greenwood, as Tommy the Cat, who had the audience in stitches, when he began to sing in “Miaow’s”. Max Hartle stole the show as Sara the Cook, with his perfect comic timing. Natalie Greenwood was funny and delightful as Fairy Bow Bells and Chloe McMackin was suitably wicked as Queen Rat. They complemented each other during their duet ‘What Is This Feeling’, from Wicked – The Musical.

Assistant, Casey Howard, also brought in the laughs during the kitchen scene. Other pupils took on the roles of villagers, school children, ships crew and rats. Sponge Bob Square Pants (Dion Parker-Minchin) even made a special appearance! It is impossible to mention everyone, but all the cast worked hard and pulled together to put on an excellent show, with many pupils given cameo roles to show off their acting talents. ANYONE WISHING TO JOIN THE THEATRE SCHOOL CAN RING COLIN ON 07774152620 OR VISIT www.starstruckagency.com. .

Ruth Meredith

Rebecca Hardman, as Dizzy Dora and Edward Lang-Whiston, as Captain Cutlass, were both thoroughly entertaining to watch. Other strong performances included Amy Woodier as Alice Fitzwarren, Alex Holland as Alderman Fitzwarren and William Lang-Whiston as the King of Morocco. Ethan and Jacob Johnson deserve a special mention for dressing up as ‘Jedward’ for a rendition of Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’. Jody Turner, Travis Roberts and Megan Kirby worked well together in a schoolroom scene packed full of gags. Ben Maguire, as Louigi the Chef and his www.rochdalestyle.com

The event was inspired by the sponsor's (CTL Wealth Management Ltd) own experiences of other more formal networking events, and the desire to bring together local like-minded business people, in a more relaxed, informal atmosphere. The club is proving ever more popular with a regular gathering of over 50 people in local business. There are no membership fees or 60 second speeches, as their ethos is one of a "no hard sell", relaxed atmosphere. Just good food, good company and the chance to form new business relationships, as well as cementing existing ones, not to mention the fantastic, authentic Indian cuisine! The Rochdale Business Curry Club meet in the evenings, on the second Wednesday of every month, from 6:00pm through to approximately 9:00pm. The intention is to meet up for 30 minutes to mingle and network, before sitting down at 6.30pm to enjoy the excellent food on offer, with the opportunity to continue networking during and after the meal. Individuals or businesses can ‘sponsor’ an event by offering a business card draw prize, with the added opportunity of spending a minute or two showcasing their business to fellow guests. The club recently celebrated its first birthday and welcomed Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Keith Swift and Mayoress Sue Etchells as their guests.

Spring/Summer Fashion Trends 2010 Now that the weather is warming up and the days are getting longer, it’s time to start thinking about your spring/summer wardrobe. Soft PASTEL and NEUTRAL shades are making a comeback for spring. Oversized bouncy FRILLS are also in, but don’t mix the two. Think feminine, but not too girly. LONG FLOWING SKIRTS are perfect for an effortless spring/summer look. They are also great for covering up legs… especially if you haven’t seen the sun for a while!

This season’s trend is for patchwork double-denim, if you’re brave enough! Although, the head-to-toe DENIM look is difficult to pull off, so start off with a denim shirt. Love them or hate them DUNGAREES are also making a big comeback this spring and summer. Slouchy, LAYERED fabrics in greys, navy and KHAKI are a simple, casual look for spring. Add in details such as oversized pockets, drawstrings, buckles and zips. Khaki is less military this season and it's best to avoid the head-to-toe khaki look, so opt for key pieces. Army jackets are still popular, but with girly touches of chiffon and floral prints.

You are sure to find a fabulous prom or party dress at 25TEN BOUTIQUE (Cheetham Street, Rochdale), BEST DRESSED (Church Street, Littleborough) or MARABELLA BOUTIQUE (Edenfield Road, Norden). And you will find the perfect pair of shoes to finish off your outfit, at TIGER FEET (Hare Hill Road, Littleborough) or SHOES BY LACES (Cheetham Street). Ruth Meredith

Believe it or not, wearing UNDERWEAR AS OUTERWEAR is big this season. Think sheer layers and lacy items, but cover up with a cardigan or military jacket. With party pieces, think SPARKLY and elegant, not showy. Think METALLIC, sequins and crystals. And don't be afraid to pile on the accessories to make your look unique. Clutter-up with earrings and layered necklaces. PROM SEASON is on its way and there are many trends for the upcoming season. The most important thing is to choose a dress that you feel comfortable in. Make sure you choose a colour that suits your complexion and a dress that fits you right and flaunts the shape of your body. Long dresses are still in, but short dresses are becoming more and more popular. ASYMMETRICAL dresses are also right on trend, drawing attention to the shoulders. If you want to make a statement, go for big RUFFLES, bright colours or BOLD PRINTS, such as floral, graphic or animal. Plunging V-shaped necklines also look great, if you go for a fairly long dress. Alternatively, you could go for elegant metallic colours or play it safe with a timeless little black dress.

EXPERIENCE SOUTH AFRICA

2010

EDITOR

Colin Meredith

The 2010 world Cup final kicks off on June 11, with the first game between South Africa and Mexico starting off the month long feast of football. Fortunately, for the non-football lovers there is always wimbledon, which this year is from 21 June - 4 July. How will we be able to fit it all in?

England’s first game in Group C is against USA on 12 June in Rustenberg, followed by opponents Algeria on the 18 June in Cape Town and their game against Slovenia on the 23 June in Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth.

S

o is it worth the trip to South Africa? Flights aren’t cheap, but having experienced the delights of Cape Town it is an unforgettable country to visit. So here’s what to expect from the beautiful cities where England will play this summer.

Rustenburg is in the heart of the savannah bushveld. The city is in the North West Province, nestled at the foothills of the breathtaking Magaliesburg Mountains. The highest point in this mountain range is 1,852m above sea level and has been a tactical region for many battles for land during the early 1800s. In June, England will play at The Royal Bafokeng Stadium, which is named after the Bafokeng People who own shares in the platinum mines in the area. Rustenburg is also 30 km from Sun City; internationally renowned as Africa's premier holiday resort. Sun City offers many entertainment and relaxation opportunities, as well as 36

enough attractions and activities to keep everyone busy. It incorporates The Palace of the Lost City. Attractions at this resort include hot air balloon rides, The Valley of Waves and a 25-hectare jungle. Cape Town is a diverse, cosmopolitan city. It has one of the most idyllic settings - set between the ocean and breathtaking mountains. The iconic Table Mountain rises 1,086 above the city and has served as a mariner's landmark. On a clear day, the flattopped mountain is visible 200km out to sea. The "Mother city", as Cape Town is known in South Africa, has an abundance of activities, from lounging on the popular beaches to exploring the vividly painted area of the Bo-kaap. Hout Bay is a hub for fishing and the historical naval base at Simon's Town has a fascinating past. The Victoria and Alfred (V&A) Waterfront is a great location for shopping and is also host to the Two Oceans Aquarium. The

Western Cape area is renowned as a wine-producing area, and there are tours available along the 'wine route'. Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth is one of the most sought-after destinations in South Africa. The newly built Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium will host the third and fourth place play-offs. known as ‘the Friendly City', Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth is surrounded by immaculate beaches and is an exceptionally busy port city. It is located in the Eastern Cape Province, which has been home to some of the country's most iconic figures including Mandela, former president Thabo Mbeki, Steve Biko, Chris Hani, Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo. The sunshine coast, with its rugged unspoiled beaches and Hogsback, which is rumoured to be the inspiration for the Lord of the Rings books, are all within a few hours drive from the city. The city is also a mere 30-minute drive from five-star game lodges.

BoB nEAVE For those who can’t justify a trip to South Africa this year, why not sample the South African delicacies available right on your doorstep. Local Heywood businessman, Bob Neave and his wife Leslie are no strangers to South Africa, having found their way to Heywood via the Natal in South Africa. Bob gave Style Magazine a selected breakdown of some of his South African delicacies, available at Bob’s Speciality Meats in Heywood. BOEREWORS Boerewors sausage is very popular among

South Africans and also world famous. Traditionally braaied (barbecued) over coals, boerewors is delicious and unique. Our boerewors is spiced with the perfect blend of coriander, nutmeg, roast coriander, black pepper and a mild clove taste for a full flavoured boerewors. We use only good quality british meat and natural casings to ensure high quality boerewors. BILTONG We season our biltong with a traditional biltong seasoning. This enhances the

natural meat flavour and also seasons the biltong with mild coriander and black pepper. This gives our biltong a dark dried appearance with a medium coating of coarse coriander. We use only top quality british beef to ensure good tasting biltong. CHILLI STICkS These popular dried meat strips have a very strong chilli taste and a spicy masala/curry flavour. They have an attractive colour with visible green parsley pieces. Enjoyed as a snack while drinking beer and watching rugby (and football as well!). www.rochdalestyle.com

Growing From

Seed

Springtime is the start of the gardening year when warmer, longer days breathe life back into sleeping plants after their winter hibernation. watching seeds ‘hatch out’, forming tiny roots and shoots is very pleasurable. Children love to examine the developing seed under a magnifying glass. Indeed, as a gardener it is very useful to consider the needs of the tiny seedling as if you were its size!

V

ariations in the temperature, light levels and moisture can make a huge difference as to the success or failure of your germinating seedlings. Imagine if you were the size of a seedling how you would feel under a plastic lid in the hot sunshine or being washed away by huge drops of rain! So think small to understand a seeds needs. If successful you can produce masses of beautiful plants at a fraction of the cost you would pay for them, once mature, as well as having the pleasure of watching them develop. Indeed, with vegetables you have the added benefit of eating them afterwards!

6) Once sowing is complete, cover the seeds with a layer of fine grade vermiculite to a thickness equivalent to the thickness of the seed. 7) For best results place the seed tray in a heated propagator, set at 20°C and mist the compost with a fine mister to increase humidity before putting the clear lid on. 8) If you have not got a propagator, a clear bag sealed around the tray is suitable. Place the tray on a warm, bright windowsill. 9) Remove the cover daily to reduce stagnation of the air and avoid fungal problems. On sunny days put a piece of newspaper over the tray to avoid overheating. 10) Most vegetables and bedding plant seeds will germinate in 1 to 3 weeks under these SOWING INDOORS conditions. So, what are the basic steps involved? 11) Once green shoots can be seen start removing 1) Use clean (new or washed in hot water) seed the cover 2-3 times a day to acclimatise the trays and pots to avoid fungus diseases plants, misting if the compost looks dry. attacking the young seedlings. 12) As the plants develop the lid is removed, but 2) Use a proprietary seed compost such as John misting may be needed 2-3 times a day. keep Innes Seed Compost, which has a very fine the plants in a bright spot or they will grow texture and doesn’t contain any weed seeds. tall and spindly. 3) Fill the trays or pots with the compost, firm 13) Find out what temperature the particular plant down gently with a small wooden press and needs as keeping it too warm or too cold can water with a suitable fungicide, such as lead to failure. Leave them in these pots to grow and establish either in a heated greenhouse or windowsill. As the days get warmer during April/May, start hardening them off and bringing them in at night, and protecting them from cold, wet weather. Finally, plant outside to grow on in a bright, fertile border and admire all your handywork. But remember slugs like young plants too, so be vigilant! SOWING OUTDOORS Some plant seeds can be sown directly into the garden (e.g. Peas, Beans), because they are fast growers and they don’t mind a bit of cold. The principles are still the same: * Provide a fine seed bed by digging and raking. * Remove all weeds, large stones and debris. * Sow the seed at the recommended distance apart and cover with fine soil at a depth proportionate to the size of the seed. * Water and keep soil slightly moist to encourage germination. * As plants develop remove weeds and ‘thin out’ plants if too close together. *Feed and water as plants grow. This may sound like a lot of work but growing flowers and vegetables from seed is tremendously satisfying and rewarding. So why not have a go and start pottering in your garden. n

Trained at South Trafford College, Rob gained his experience at some of the uK's most coveted kitchens. When asked why he was attracted to the Peacock Room, Rob replies that he had an instant connection with Deckers and their Chef Director Paul Dickson, in the way they think about food and the direction they want to take the Peacock Room in. In response, Paul says that Rob has already made a great impact with the Peacock Room customers and has put some new ideas in place. Rob is a huge fan of modern British cuisine and using local seasonal ingredients to their utmost potential. It’s that time of the year again; the BAFTA’s, Oscars and the BRIT’s award ceremonies may have the glitz and glamour, but the one they all want to win is the Rochdale Style Car of the Year awards!

C A R O F T H E y E A R 2 0 10 FAMILY CAR OF THE YEAR – Vauxhall Astra 2010 sees the introduction of the sixth generation Astra. The new design, although clearly incorporating the DNA of its ancestors, noticeably features the new corporate look Vauxhall, first introduced on the Insignia and now rolling out across the range. A low trapezoidal grille, incorporating the latest Griffin logo dominates the front of the car, while the familiar blade sculpted into the high shoulder line gives the new Astra a sporty feel. Inside, the cabin feels more like a car in the class above. The driver is made as comfortable as in some much bigger rivals and the cabin space is well used, giving the ability to seat five adults in relative comfort. Fit and finish is excellent, along with the quality of materials used throughout the cockpit and across the range, all of which is a definite improvement on the vast expanses of plastic found in the outgoing car. A sporty, but comfortable ride, as well as a massive range of powerful yet frugal engines, makes the Astra a clear choice for winner in this category. GREEN CAR OF THE YEAR – Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion You were obviously thinking the new Prius would be the clear winner here, but while the Toyota hybrid continues to be the car of choice for those wanting to be ‘seen’ as 52

www.rochdalestyle.com

being environmentally aware; it’s the Golf people should choose if they want to practice what they preach. The Golf doesn’t use any batteries which are energy intensive to produce, nor does it have automatic transmission, which actually produces more emissions. It is just a common or garden Golf which has been lightened and aerodynamically tweaked to become the first proper-sized family car to dip under the 100 g/km CO2 barrier and qualify for free road tax. The Prius does emit less than the VW, but at a £1,000 cheaper and being much easier to service and maintain, the Golf Bluemotion is the winner. SPORTS CAR OF THE YEAR – Nissan GT-R This one was quite a difficult choice, with so many good performance cars coming to market, even in the depths of a recession. The Nissan won out in the end though, thanks to the sheer amount of fun it offers for quite a reasonable price tag. While £57,000 for a car is out of reach for most of us, when you compare the price tag to the £81,000 Audi R8 and the £99,000 the equivalent Porsche 911 costs, it does seem cheap and that is before you look at the performance figures. The GT-R is quite simply amazing. The limits of grip seem endless and the engine

will rev to its limits all day without as much as a murmur of discontent. The one drawback though, is the still quite substantial waiting list. It would have been easy to name the Ferrari Callifornia as the winner in this category, but at twice the price of the GT-R, even the prestige and soul of the prancing horse can’t overcome the raw fun that the GT-R offers. MANUFACTURER OF THE YEAR – Kia The cars Kia make may not be the most exciting on sale, but for the average punter buying a car with their own money, it’s the warranty which is one of the main selling points. By extending the seven year warranty first offered on the cee’d across the entire range, Kia are showing the confidence it has in its own products. By laying down the gauntlet and making this offer, Kia will force the hand of other manufacturers, most of which only offer a three year warranty into upping the ante and that will benefit us all in the long run. In the meantime though, if you want complete peace of mind for the next seven years, it is to Kia where your money should be going. Their range of cars isn’t too bad either!

ALISon

when Mattie Henshaw’s mother walked into the path of a bus during a blizzard in 1965, leaving Mattie aged 14 and her two younger brothers with no surviving parent, the ensuing events could never have been envisaged in a 20th-century society. Separated from her brothers, she was taken into care where her life was to change dramatically, following the abuse by her foster-parents. As a result of bitter experiences, Mattie was unable to overcome her fear of men and when she met a man she had feelings for, she felt the need to move away. will she succeed in her endeavours to rid her earlier painful memories from her tormented mind?

Alison’ is a compelling, heartrending story of conflict, tragedy, humour and passion.

oH wHAT A TAnGLEd wEB... A poignant story of love, passion and sacrifice...an exposé of a young woman’s duplicity, created by a need to protect loved ones whatever the consequences. Robyn and david Ainsley have the perfect marriage until they decide to start a family, when even the intervention of IVF treatment proves unsuccessful. Initiated by david, a web of lies slowly begins to emerge and Robyn too becomes engulfed with no means of escape; there are truths that can never be told and the web continues to grow, nurtured by her dishonesty. She lives every day of her life in fear of detection until suddenly matters come to a head. only then does she understand the true meaning of fear...

At the age of 17, when Alison Haythorne’s mother dies, her whole world falls apart. without relatives close at hand, she forms a friendship with Jenny Joyce, little knowing how the consequences of that friendship will change her life. Very soon she is to face yet more daunting challenges but remembering that her mother taught her to be strong in the face of adversity, she strives to overcome them. Along the way she meets three men, one of whom steals her heart. will Alison find true happiness at last or is something sinister lurking that could destroy everything?

down THE FIGuRE 7 Local author, Trevor Hoyle’s latest novel “down the Figure 7”, published by Pomona, is out on the 15th April. The novel tells of a gang of lads growing up in Lancashire, in the 1950s, raiding other gangs for ‘bommie’ wood and discovering the thrill of their first fumbling encounter behind the garages. Trevor, from newhey, has used memories from his own youth and set it in a northern cotton town struggling to emerge from a decade of shortages and make-do-andmend. He says it is packed with nostalgic images, and will bring to life those golden and innocent days after the Second world war. He said: “It’s set in the 1950s and tells the story of a working-class lad growing up in a northern cotton town, though there’s a darker, grittier edge to it too.”

A N IN SP IR IN G ST O RY ‘Springhill Hospice, Rochdale’, is the inspiring story of the People’s Hospice. The Hospice for Rochdale Appeal was launched in 1983. In total it raised £900,000 without help from ‘big business’. In 1989, Springhill Hospice opened to patients and since then over 6,000 patients and their families have benefited from the care offered by Springhill. The Hospice is a vital lively place, which operates at the cutting edge of palliative care. ***PHOTO COMPETITION!*** Local amateur photographers are invited to enter their photos for the 2011 Springhill Hospice Calendar. The calendar will include thirteen colour photographs of local scenes. Once you've instructed a local HIPs provider, they will need to visit the property to gather the data with which to compile the Energy Performance Certificate - this typically takes around an hour. It is the practice to collect the Property Information Questionnaire (PIQ) and give any advice required for its completion. At this point, they have the information needed for the sale statement and apply to the Land Registry for proof of title. Typically, it takes between 2 and 3 weeks for the full HIP to be compiled. However, within just 48 hours of the property visit, the basic HIP can be issued, and the For Sale board can go up in the front garden. LE DA CH RO

Selling your house by yourself is a relatively simple process. Don’t let requirements such as HIPs and Energy Performance Certificates put you off – they aren’t as complicated as they sound. Home Information Packs (HIPs) were introduced in 2007 to provide more information about a property at the start of the process, in order to help people make informed decisions about viewing or making an offer to buy a home. If you are selling through an agent, they will offer to produce the HIP as part of their service, but this is almost always at an appreciably higher cost than purchasing from a specialist provider. With the help of Style Magazine, we feel you could sell your home yourself for under £1000, including employing a local solicitor for the conveyancing. Start by using Rochdale based HIPS provider, Andrew Morton, and by placing your home free of charge on Tepilo. Then showcase your home in Style Magazine, attracting 60,000 local readers. You can even get your own House For Sale sign made by Peel Graphics, in Heywood, for around £20.

has removed the need for estate agents. "An estate agent's role is incredibly different to what it used to be. The internet's completely turned the process of buying and selling a property on its head", says Beeney.

This has brought a new breed of property owner, using the internet to cut out the middle man from the buying and selling process. Most buyers now search the web for a property and then download the information at home without ever entering an estate agents door. With the vast majority of properties now advertised online and tools that allow buyers to look at property from street level, such as Google Street View, buyers and sellers do not need an estate agent in the same way they used to.

It is not that long ago when the sight of a new estate agent opening its doors on our high street seemed unstoppable. In 2007, there were around 12,000 estate agents in Britain, according to the Ombudsman for estate agents (OEA). However, due to the dramatic reverse in house prices one in four has now closed.

COMMunITy... BALAnCInG ACT The Freemasons of Rochdale recently made a generous donation of £400 to Skylight Circus, based at The Broadwater Centre, Rochdale. Skylight Circus Arts is a registered charity, delivering quality training and workshops for many young people, including those with learning difficulties. Carra King and Charma Force (pictured) both teach voluntarily at the centre, which has been going for over 20 years. The Freemasons support many local people and charities. This particular donation was raised at the new years Eve Dance, where one of the members donated 70 watches from J&D Alexander's (The Walk, Rochdale), which were auctioned off.

DIRECT TO ThE STREET A Rochdale midwife recently ended up on the set of Coronation Street, in a bid to raise awareness of a telephone service Direct to Midwife. Fay visited the Coronation Street set to hand over a set of posters and a special teddy bear for display around the Corrie studios. While she was there she met Coronation Street actress, Julie hesmondhalgh, to help raise awareness of the service. By calling 0800 121 4400, women in Rochdale can speak to a midwife as soon as they know they are pregnant, instead of their GP, which often gains access to ante-natal care more quickly. On calling, women will be put in touch with the team of midwives closest to where they live. Fay said: “The Direct to Midwife phone number is a great idea, because it offers mums-to-be a simpler way of accessing the care they need.”

MARy, QuEEn OF ThE CROPS Rochdale hairdresser, John Peers, worked closely with retail guru, Mary Portas, for the new series of Mary Queen of Shops, to be screened later this year. Mary and her team gave the salon a major new look and introduced a new concept to the salon called ‘fashion hair’. John who is thrilled with the new look admitted that the experience proved to be a gruelling at times. The interest from the programme came as a result of a meeting at the nEC in Birmingham when Mary Portas was a guest speaker. This led to a meeting with John when he found out she was looking to feature a hair salon in Rochdale. John thinks the programme will give the town a positive boost, which has suffered its fair share of negativity in the press in recent months. 62
