INTRODUCTION

FROM THE PDMS - LEE GARCKA & GARETH OLIVER

Welcome to the Bury School Sports Partnership Yearly Review. Our celebration of the last 12 months activity in all areas of sport, PE and physical activity. We have made a tremendous amount of progress in the last 12 months. The continued funding we receive from central government along with a number of other key groups and initiatives means we have been able to enhance capacity in a number of key priority areas including coaching, competition for all and increased links with the further education sector. We have also been able to build upon the successes achieved in primary and secondary school based partnership work. We are continually striving to meet the sporting needs of young people in Bury and are hoping to achieve the government’s ambition of 5 hours of PE and sport for every child by the time the 2012 Olympics visit our shores. We hope you enjoy reading our review and would welcome your feedback.

“I am delighted to be lending my support as Partnership Ambassador to the work going on throughout the Bury School Sports Partnership network. As a former pupil from Bury myself, I know how much school sport can play such a vital role in shaping positive outcomes for the future development of all young people, regardless of ability, age, ethnicity or gender. PE lessons, extra-curricular clubs and local community sports providers are integral to this and I am very much looking forward to possibly seeing more athletes from Bury become future champions in their chosen sports.” www.buryssp.co.uk

CASTLEBROOK CLUSTER REPORT The year kicked off with both dance and hockey coaching in schools. Another successful dance festival took place in November and was very well supported by family and friends, with pupils performing to a full house. Primary schools competed in even more competitions than ever before, 7 in total, which included a Reception and Y1 gymnastics competition. Castlebrook had a number of new clubs up and running which proved very popular with pupils. Parkour was a great success which included a visit from Sport England’s Mike Diaper and Liz Aitken (Senior Manager of Sport Unlimited), who came along to witness the sessions being led by Will our freerunning coach. Cheerleading was another great hit with the girls, who also had an opportunity to perform at the dance festival, and a wrestling taster session which was attended by 20 Y7 and 8 pupils.

On the high school front, over 20 pupils in year 10 gained access to a range of leadership courses that ran on 1 day in April. Again this was a massive success and hopefully the children will now use their skills to work with the primary schools and KS3 to put them into practice. A lifestyle club was also run early in the spring term. This was well attended and was aimed towards increasing children’s fitness levels as well as steering them towards a healthier lifestyle. the best achievements was that of Christ Church Walshaw and their victory in the Indoor Cricket competition, particularly as some of the players were as young as Year 3. Other successful competitions were indoor athletics and Yr3/4 girls football. Over 200 parents attended the twilight performance put on by children from KS1 and year 7/8 pupils from the high school. The festival was a huge success with emotions running high throughout the evening not only from the performers but also the staff involved! Thanks must be placed on record to the work that both Alex and Romina (dance teachers) did to build up the confidence in the children to perform on the night. Fingers crossed that the performance will be even more of a success next year. PESSYP SURVEY RESULTS 'The PESSYP (Physical Education School Sport & Young People) survey is our prime tool for measuring School Sports Partnership success. Each year every school completes the PESSYP survey which highlights the figures achieved in key areas of SSP work. The results from the last 4 years are displayed below, compared to the national figures. In context, the government ambition is that: 'by the end of academic year 2010-11, 40% of young people to take part in 5 hours a week of PE and sport'. 'by the end of academic year 2010-11, 80% of 5-16 year olds in every school sport partnership (SSP) to take part in 3 hours a week of PE and sport organised by schools'. KEY
