MESSAgE from the EDiToR Metrolink on test in Rochdale town centre

Dear Readers,

This edition marks Style’s ninth birthday! To celebrate we have some extra special interviews with Coronation Street’s Sam Aston (Chesney) and his thespian sister Emily Aston. We also bring you an exclusive interview with Paralympian legend Derek Derenalagi, a truly inspiring sportsman and former soldier.

We have been blessed with some wonderful sunshine over the past few months and at Style we have been busy enjoying Rochdale’s wonderful surroundings, such as Hollingworth Lake and the many other beauty spots that grace the town. What a fantastic summer we have had - the sunshine really does bring out the positives in people and more importantly the positives in our great town.

Rochdale's plans for the future are developing week by week and we are now seeing the benefits of months and months of disruption and road closures. Thankfully for the retailers on Drake Street things are getting back to normal with access resumed and more parking than before. The Metrolink has been tested on Drake Street to its terminus in the centre and the town's transformation is well on its way.

The Co-op museum & Rochdale’s award winning pub, The Baum

As we go to press the annual Feel Good Festival is taking place and from 25th- 27th October we have the Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival. There are some top names coming to Rochdale for the festival and you will find a 12-page guide to the festival in the centre of this edition. This edition once again includes the Preview events guide, which is full of things to do in the coming months.

The magazine is packed with great places to dine and lots of independent retailers and businesses. Their continued support for Rochdale Style makes our publication possible, so please support them and shop local.

Don't forget to tell anyone who does not get a copy of the magazine they can always read Style online at www.rochdalestyle.com. I hope you enjoy this issue.

STYLE EXCLUSIVE - CORONATION STREET

ACTOR SAM ASTON Local actor Sam Aston is celebrating ten years on the cobbles, as Corrie favourite Chesney Brown. 20-year-old Sam first became known as the cheeky chappy on the Warburton’s commercial, before joining the Coronation Street cast in 2003. Style caught up with Sam to discuss drama on the street, family life in Bacup and his love of golf and the Clarets...

www.rochdalestyle.com

How did you first get into acting? Well I just followed my family really. I started going to Carol Godby’s theatre workshop at just five years old, but four of my brothers and sisters were already going so I just went to follow suit. But I quickly started enjoying it and by the time I was about six I got my first TV role - a small commercial for Asda (George).

You have eight siblings - did you all catch the acting bug? Well there’s only two of us who remain in the acting industry now… myself and Emily. We’ve all just had a love for it, but it’s only me and Emily that have made it our career and have stuck at it. But all my brothers and sisters have done well and are all working in different fields now. Do you still live at home in Bacup? Yes I still live at home with my parents. Can’t get enough of my home comforts!!

How would you describe Chesney? Well Chesney has been through a lot of ups and downs. Unfortunately mostly downs. But he’s strong and Fiz has always been able to keep him on the straight and narrow. You would think he’d have gone off the rails by now, but he’s a good lad with a good heart.

Are there any similarities between you and him? Not really, he’s had it tough, whereas I couldn’t have asked for a better upbringing. I have a fantastic family and they’re a great support and always have been. I’ve often found it hard playing such a distressed young man because I can’t really relate to what he’s going through. But because I’ve played Chesney for most of my life I feel like I’ve been there. It’s very bizarre!

What is coming up for Chesney? Any spoilers? At the minute I’m very quiet. He’s content with Sinead so I’m not sure what’s on the cards. Things never stay the same in soap so we shall have to wait and see!! Do you think he’s more suited to Sinead or Katy? Sinead I would say, more so than Katy. I think he’s more himself with Sinead and they seem

barber shop long enough, sooner or later you’re gunna get a hair cut! So don’t get disheartened, I like to think ‘what will be will be’. After all we are all totally powerless, so just enjoy the journey and stay positive!

to have a good laugh; he was always arguing with Katy and they seemed to get stressed out a lot.

Who are your closest friends on the Corrie set? Obviously the cast members who I work the most with, so Jenny (Fiz), Andy (Kirk), Katy (Sinead), Georgia (Katy) and then I’m good friends with Mikey North (Gary) as we share a dressing room. But I do get on with all the cast members - Corrie is a very friendly place to work and it’s a nice atmosphere there.

Do you watch yourself on television? No not really, I probably should do from a professional point of view, but because I came into the show from a young age I’ve never really done it, so I’m stuck in that habit now. I find it a bit embarrassing sometimes if I’m honest.

You’ve grown up on the nation’s television screens… do you find that people feel like they know you? Yes I would say so, they’ve seen Chesney go through an awful lot of troubled times so they feel sorry for you and because it’s on so much some people do feel like it’s real life - they see you as just ‘Chez’ off the street.

Are you planning to stay on the street for the near future? Yes most definitely. I’ve just signed another 12month contract so I will be here for a little while longer and hopefully longer after that!

Aside from Corrie, what else would you like to work on in the future? I would like to try theatre maybe one day. I haven’t done much and wouldn’t mind giving it a whirl. I’ve always been a big film fan! So maybe getting a role in a film or the American series ‘Sons of Anarchy’ - I like that show a lot! I could be a new prospect in that you never know haha!

What do you get up to in your spare time? Well I have two jobs and a few hobbies so I’m always keeping myself busy, as I run a business with my brother Joe (JSA Print). We do embroidery and screen printing onto clothing for businesses, clubs, groups and labourers, things like that. So that keeps me very busy and Joe works for the business full time. I also like going to the gym and cycling. But my main hobby is golf… I absolutely love the game! It’s just a fantastic rest bite from when things get a bit hectic. I do love my golf! How do you think Burnley FC will do this season? I think we’ll do ok. We’ve had a decent start to the season so start as we mean to go on! UTC!!

Do you enjoy the fame side of things? I don’t know really, I suppose there are ups and downs to any job. I think the fact that I can never escape Chesney is sometimes a negative, like when you’re out and about or in a busy place and you just want to do your own thing it’s hard to blend in. I can be picked out from a crowd and it makes you slightly edgy if you know some people are watching you… it must be the ginger hair!! Nah, I wouldn’t change corrie. I do love it. The recognition is just something that comes with it… it’s part and parcel of the job. So you kind of have to just deal with it.

What advice would you give to aspiring young actors? That is a tough one; I’m not an expert. I just feel blessed more than anything else. But I think not being afraid to fail is a big one. Failure can hit people hard but it’s having the courage to just keep going and going and going and never give up. If you hang around the

Emily is appearing in the upcoming tour of ‘War Horse’

Emily in ‘Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit’

STYLE EXCLUSIVE

ACTRESS EMILY ASTON Local actress Emily Aston is probably best known for her childhood role in the Bafta nominated BBC drama series Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit.

Since then she has had a string of high-profile TV roles, including Funland, Doctors and Heartbeat. She can also lay claim to being the first Aston to walk on those famed Corrie cobbles, before her younger brother Sam turned up as Chesney.

Style caught up with Emily to discuss her upcoming tour of War Horse, her future career hopes and finding an agent in the Yellow Pages! What was your first acting role & how did you get the part? I was in my school in Bacup (St Saviour’s) and one day a casting director and director came in. They were looking for a little red headed girl for a drama called Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit. The headteacher said to my mum, ‘Janet the BBC have been in today, they had a chat with your Emily, but don’t worry I don’t think anything will come of it’. They saw 200 girls and I was one of a shortlist of six and ended up getting the part. After that my mum went to Bacup Library and found me an agent in the yellow pages! You once received a Bafta nomination? Yes, Best Actress for Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit. I was only 7 years old, it was mad!

You have eight siblings, three of whom are also actors! Why do you think that is? Well our Joe did do it for a while but doesn’t anymore. So it’s just me and our Sam now. It

8

www.rochdalestyle.com

all happened by accident really and we have been very lucky.

Do you still live locally? I kind of live everywhere at the moment as I am on tour with a show.

You’ve had a varied acting career so far, but which role has been your favourite? This is always a hard question for me. I have quite a few. Obviously Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit because it was my first ever part and it is what got me into acting, but then I enjoyed working with Shane Meadows in Dead Man’s Shoes. Do you prefer stage or screen? I love stage, as you can’t beat a live audience and having to think on your feet if anything goes wrong! But I do love television and film. I just feel lucky to be doing either of them! What are you up to at the moment? Well I am in rehearsals for the UK and Ireland tour of War Horse. I have never done a theatre

show on this scale; it is amazing… I am so excited! I feel so so lucky to be a part of it. Everyday I keep thinking someone is going to come up to me and say they got the wrong Emily or something!

What roles would you love to play in the future? I would love to do a really gritty drama or film. Something I can really get my teeth into.

Are you a Coronation Street fan?! I do love Corrie. I think it’s got a bit everything in it. I have always enjoyed my soaps! You used to be in Coronation Street yourself, as Becky Palmer… would you like to return to the cobbles? I would love to return to the Cobbles! I love Corrie and I would feel so lucky if I got the opportunity to do it again!

What advice would you give to young actors? It is a very hard business to be in, but don’t give up! There will be ups and downs but just keep going! Make sure you get your education as it is always good to have something to fall back on. Just follow your heart! War Horse will be playing The Lowry, Salford, between 20th Nov 2013 – 18th Jan 2014.

ambassador for the forthcoming Rugby League World Cup and also Rochdale’s Fiji vs. Ireland

match in October.

Style spoke to Derek about his incredible

achievements, the many obstacles he has overcome and his future plans...

How did you become an athlete? I’m a keen sportsman and even before my injuries I used to play Rugby Union. I lost my legs in 2007 and in 2008 I was in the military rehab centre watching the Olympics and Paralympics. The Games inspired me, especially the guys in the wheelchairs and the guys running on blades. I thought to myself ‘I can do that’ and that was the starting point of my training.

What was it like to be a part of the Paralympics? It was the greatest feeling representing Great Britain. It’s an achievement that I won’t ever forget. I’m so glad that I did it. It was an honour – especially being a soldier and fighting for the country in Iraq and Afghanistan, and then to be competing for Great Britain in the home Olympic Games.

What effect do you think the Paralympics has had on the country? London has raised the bar for Paralympic sports. I think people have been educated in the Paralympics and disabilities. The Paralympics has affected the country in a big big way. First of all, it’s changed the way we look at disabled people as a whole and it has also educated youngsters all over the country, from North to South - not only the country, but the whole world.

Are you hoping to compete in Rio 2016? Definitely, that’s the plan. I’ve done London, so why not do it all over again in Rio. As long as my body can take the intensity of the physical and mental training then I’ll do it.

What gave you the motivation to stay positive and achieve everything that you have so far? My wife and I are Christians. And believing in God has really motivated us to look beyond what has happened. We didn’t look at the negatives, we looked at the positive side of things. And I believe that has helped and motivated us both to carry on.

When I first woke up from the coma after losing my legs, I said to my wife, ‘Can I go to the toilet?’, but she had tears running down her face. She couldn’t tell me so she took a picture. As amputees, we sometimes experience a

During the London parade for the Olympics & Paralympics

feeling that our limbs are still intact, when in reality they’re not. When I saw the picture I was devastated.

Whether you’ve been injured in a war zone, a road traffic accident or something else, the support plays a big part in your recovery; especially the support from the people who are closest to you - your husband, wife, parents, brothers, sisters, colleagues. My wife stood beside me through thick and thin and she left her job for two years just to take care of me, which was a massive boost to my recovery.

What advice would you give to anyone hoping to compete in the Paralympic Games? There are no limits to what you can do in life. Whether it’s the Paralympics or whatever it may be. You can achieve whatever you want to achieve. The only thing that anyone ever needs is motivation to drive you forward and to build courage every single day of your life. Keep on going and don’t give up.

Not everyone will get into the Paralympic Games and I know there are people who are struggling everyday, but my advice to them is don’t give up on your dreams. There are always other people who are struggling more than you. Be content with what you have. You may not have everything, but you have something. Thank God every single day of your life because some people right now are in hospital struggling to keep breathing, on machines to keep them going. But you and I have the breathe of life. So be thankful. Every single day that I wake up at home I am always thankful that I can face a new day.

You seem an incredibly positive person… Thank you! I do have down times. I’m not superhuman. But whenever I come across those down moments I think of the guys I was

with in Afghanistan. They are not here today – they have left their kids, their wives and their parents. They were hoping to be here but they couldn’t be. I’ve made it through, even though I’ve lost limbs.

I’ve never regretted losing my legs because I can do the things that able-bodied people can do. Right now I am enjoying life. I love life more now than when I had my legs. That’s from my heart. If I had my legs I would have missed all these opportunities - so I’m thankful, so humble and taking every opportunity that comes my way.

Why did you agree to be an ambassador for the Rugby League World Cup? I’m a rugby player myself, not Rugby League, Rugby Union. But I just love watching Rugby. I love to promote sport and I would like to encourage people to take up sport and lead a healthier lifestyle. As long as we move ourselves in any sort of sport we will keep motivated.

Will you be coming to the Fiji vs. Ireland match in Rochdale on 28 October? I am! I’m looking forward to it.

What do you think of Fiji’s chances?! I think Fiji will beat Ireland! I think they’ll do well, I’ll be routing for them.

What future plans do you have? I’m taking things one step at a time. The next stage is the Athletics European Championship coming up next year in Swansea. After that it’s the World Championship in Doha, Qatar. Then 2016 is definitely Rio. So I’ll just take each hurdle as it comes and see how things go from there.

Journalism graduate Laura Salceda shares her refreshing perspective of the town, having moved to Rochdale from Palma, Mallorca.

FROM PALMA TO ROCHDALE

There are always different reasons why people decide to go to a new country. The decision to move to England came as soon as I had finished my studies. Eight years of monotonous university life pushed my imagination countless times to the different places I wanted to visit. My best ally in moments of relaxation was my ipod, loaded with lots of indie pop bands, mostly created in Manchester. It was by coincidence that I happened to have family members, whom I had lost touch with, living in this ‘musical mecca’. After I finished my last exams only a couple of phone calls were required to start the journey. And so my adventure began…

Arriving in Rochdale My first impression after landing in Manchester was, without a doubt, the cold weather. After my first attempts to communicate, my second thought was: it doesn't matter how good I am in English exams, it’s not going to help me with these accents! On my first expedition out of the house to 16

Rochdale town centre I was amazed by www.rochdalestyle.com

to believe that it was originally created to provide water for Rochdale canal. It seems to be the local centre for water sports, such as sailing, windsurfing or rowing. Other outdoor activities include nearby stables for horse-riding ¬- maybe I will be tempted to try it one day! The first time I saw the lake it was completely frozen, but still charming. Whatever the season, it seems perfect for an afternoon walk and also a great excuse to stop for a drink and enjoy the views. Healey Dell I should mention how lucky I feel to be living in Shawclough, with Healey Dell on the doorstep. The River Spodden has been flowing through the Dell for thousands of years, creating a delightful backdrop of waterfalls. I was told that the water was used to power wool and cotton mills many moons ago. A disused Victorian railway line is now a nature trail, which is definitely my favourite place for running. There is a real contact with nature here, with the sound of the birds and variety of trees. Cowm Reservoir This is another little gem I discovered recently. I was surprised when I saw people doing watersports on the lake; excuse my Mallorcan perception of temperature, but they must have been freezing! I discovered that there’s also a treeplanting programme there, which encourages birds and other sorts of wildlife into the area. It is a very picturesque place and a popular walk due to the levelled footpath you can complete a lap in just 20 minutes. Greenbooth Reservoir The idea of a submerged village at the bottom of Greenbooth reservoir has grabbed my attention, as it is much more than just a simple walk around. I discovered that the near-abandoned village was sacrificed to provide the area with a huge reservoir providing locals with a much-needed commodity. This idyllic view is one of the best in town and seems to be appreciated by both residents and visitors alike.

The reservoir was also where I had my first sledging experience, down the dam, last winter. Although, as it was my first awkward and embarrassing contact with snow, I will spare readers the details!

Rochdale is a well-balanced place, where people can enjoy the best of countryside without straying too far from Manchester. Without hesitation it feels like a second home now, where I can return to if someday I decide to go back to my beloved little island.

Hollingworth Lake Every single time I visit I say, “I would love to build a house in this place!”. The beauty of the landscape makes it hard

UnvEiling ThE new Drake Street Drake Street, Rochdale’s historic shopping street is having a facelift to mark the re-opening of the road to traffic.

As the fencing and roadworks disappear, new footpaths and roadways are revealed as well as freshly laid tramlines in anticipation of the new Metrolink, which will travel along Drake Street into the town centre next year. Working in partnership with traders and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), the council has plans to spruce up the street to increase its appeal to locals and visitors alike.

Councillor Peter Williams, cabinet member for economic development and customer services, said: “Rochdale Town Centre has a lot to offer local shoppers. But in a competitive marketplace we need to diversify and offer something different. Drake Street is definitely positioning itself as an independent shopping quarter that is now much more attractive”.

over 100 years, including Butterworth Brothers, trading since 1903. The array of traders is diverse, including food and drink, hairdressing and beauty, men’s and women’s fashions, bridal and baby boutiques, bespoke jewellery, arts and crafts, quality gifts, specialist music, soft furnishings, photographic & binocular centre and a photography studio.

Drake Street is home to almost 30 independent retailers. Some of which have been successfully trading on the street for

centre has been carried out. Now these works are complete, traders have expressed a desire to give their premises a refresh and the Council have instigated a small grants programme to help traders deliver big improvements to the appearance of their shop frontages. Ian Sandiford, Owner of Sandifords International Fine Jewellery and Gifts, said: “It’s been a difficult couple of years trading-wise but we’re now excited about the future trading prospects and the arrival of the tram. It’s a new start for Drake Street, looking better than ever it’s clear we mean business.” Increased parking spaces on Oldham Road allows the former car park at Wet Rake Gardens to be transformed into a tranquil parkland complete with new footpaths, seating and even a traditional red telephone box. The gardens provide a welcoming gateway to Drake Street and the wider town centre. Drake Street is an important part of Rochdale’s heritage and a key landmark on the town’s Blue Plaque trail. On Drake Street alone plaques recognise the historical importance and interest of the Wellington Hotel, Butterworth Brothers Jewellers, Champness Hall, Wet Rake Gardens and Cargo Recording Studio. Attractive planters and trees have been introduced to add further greenery to the area and an information board telling a little of the history of Drake Street will welcome people approaching from the town centre.

‘Superb’ Rochdale jewellery valuer Rochdale jewellery valuer louise Butterworth, based on Drake Street, has had her work rated as ‘superb’ by the national Association of goldsmiths institute of Registered valuers.

This is not the first time Louise has gained high praise for her valuation work. Back in 1997 she was only the fourth person to be awarded the prestigious David Wilkins Award for her ‘extremely impressive work, her standards, ethics, interpretation of trade knowledge and overall presentation’.

Louise is one of only a few registered valuers who is based in a retail environment, meaning clients communicate directly with the valuer at all times. The people of Rochdale are once again assured that their oldest established shop in town continues to be independently and nationally recognised for upholding the highest professional standards.

Heywood's Big Games ‘a real scorcher’ One of the hottest days of the summer saw local families flocking into Queen's Park to enjoy this year's Big Games.

The fun event, organised by Link4Life in partnership with the Friends of Queen's Park, was a chance to show off sporting activities available in Rochdale including BMX cycling, crown green bowling, climbing, rugby, orienteering, tennis, golf and cricket. Performances on the bandstand included Heywood’s Voice Choir and Village Glee, the all ages singing group that meet weekly at Heywood Sports Village. "The day was a huge success", commented Link4Life's event organiser, Donna Livesey, "and the weather made it even better. It was a great chance for local families to find out more about all the many different activities available in the area and to try out something new." WHITE

Try head-to-toe to make the strongest statement. And mix it up with different shades of white.

GRUNGE

Take a hint of punk, add a little rock and mix in some heavy metal. Think studded leather, mesh stockings and plaid shirts… the ultimate in laid-back, rebellious style.

YOUTHFUL PRINTS

Think playful girly hearts, stars and flowers… or why not throw a few cartoon characters in there! Team with a flattering no-fuss top or contrast with patent leather. 26

All shades of GREEN,

from emerald to army and everything in between - there’s a shade to suit everyone.

OVER-THEKNEE BOOTS...

are extremely wearable and chic. klyWhile the highheeled, super-tight styles scream ‘sexy’, the flat interpretations offer a more subtle and practical alternative to the trend.

SLOUCHY PANTS

Autumn’s must-have trousers are looser and far more subdued than last season. Choose a pair that sit high on the waist and are slightly narrow at the ankles, pair with heels, and a nofuss top and you’re good to go.

The KNITTED BEANIE

Practical and affordable, not to mention very very cute. It’s also perfect for hiding those bad hair days! But don’t just pull it on to nip to the shop; wear it on the way to work or on a night out with the girls for effortless chic.

NAVY BLUE...

A STATEMENT COAT...

is a wardrobe essential and the perfect reason to splurge this season. A great coat is a definite head-turner and will transform your look in an instant. Oversized, full of volume, daring colours or shapes… take your pick.

is the new black. The intense hue is classic, timeless and pairs up well with just about any other colour. Try it with coral, orange or emerald green tones.

The TURTLENECK

is back, despite its notso-cool reputation. The trend is wearable and keeps you snug, without adding bulk (yes, it seems your mother was right all along). Contrast with heavier fabrics for the ideal layered look. 27

MoToRing: the X-factor

It’s that time of the year once more, the leaves are starting to turn golden brown, the nights are closing in and the local newsagents are steadily stocking up on supplies for Halloween, this can mean only one thing… X Factor is back on the telly! Once again, no doubt, the judges will be filmed being deposited at a range of venues in various limousines. The question is, should Simon Cowell ever give you a ring and ask you to appear on his panel, which motor should you insist on? Normally, I review a car and the whole basis of a write up is based on the driving experience. However, on this occasion I was able to persuade a colleague to take the wheel, whilst I ‘Lord Sugared’ it up in the back. JAGUAR XJ LONG WHEEL BASE The stretched version of the XJ is five inches longer than the standard car and whilst that doesn’t sound like much, this has been used almost exclusively in the back of the cabin, so much so that I felt almost lost in the space. Once on the road the ride is quiet and so very smooth. Once concentration moves from the road to the interior you start to notice how much the quality of fit and finish has improved under the new Jaguar regime, meaning that the vast expanses of wood found in older jags have been binned in favour of something modern and metallic. A choice of engines and power outputs are available but the 3.0-litre diesel found 32

www.rochdalestyle.com

across the Jaguar-Land Rover range is the pick of the bunch, being frugal yet torquey and smooth yet punchy. The Jaguar represents the ‘budget’ choice in this group with prices starting at

£59,975, which may seem a lot but as you read on, you will see it is quite a bargain!

MERCEDES S-CLASS AMG When spending a considerable sum of money on a car, you will want to ensure it can meet all your needs, in the case of a limousine you will need something not only for falling out of London nightclubs at 2am and the aforementioned X-Factor auditions, but also in case you find yourself as the dictator of a small, little-know state and for all these purposes, the S-Class is perfect. The S-Class’ trump card is its anonymity. It doesn’t have the striking looks of the Rolls Royce or the presence of the Jaguar but that makes it ideal for avoiding the paparazzi and screaming fans. The rear of the cabin is not a spacious as the other two but it’s still a quiet, luxurious place to relax after a hard day of rejecting wannabe pop stars. The engine is whisper quiet and the ride magic-carpet soft. But, after the chauffeur has gone home and you realise you need to pop to the shops for some milk, switch the AMG to sport mode and you get a supersaloon driving machine that really thrills on twisty roads, despite its considerable weight. Prices for the new S-Class, on sale early next year, are yet to be realised but expect a six-figure price tag for the 4.7-litre AMG variant.

ROLLS ROYCE PHANTOM Why would anyone not want to arrive at any event in anything less that the most ostentatious vehicle available and for the past 100 years, that has generally been a Rolls Royce, a name synonymous with luxury motoring. Four body styles are available in the new Phantom II range, but the one that I was able to get into the back off was the standard car. As soon as you get into the back of this behemoth you know you are somewhere special. The thick pile carpets, sumptuous

leather, exquisite woods and perfectly finished trim all add to a motoring experience that is almost impossible to emulate. The saying goes that the loudest mechanism in a Rolls’ is the clock, but even that in the modern era is silent. Watching the world go by in a silent cocoon is strangely eerie but I’m sure one would get quickly used to it. The model I lounged in the back of starts at £276,000 but that’s before you start ticking the options list!

Whichever car you choose to be chauffeured around in for your new career, just make sure you can enter and leave the car without flashing the press and making the headlines for all the wrong reasons! Mark D’Apice Motoring Expert

Rochdale Literature & Ideas Festival Expand your mind 25-27 October 2013 www.rochdaleliteraturefestival.co.uk

The Maskew Collection

Get set, go! A big welcome to the first Rochdale Literature & Ideas Festival. We hope it will be the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in our borough. We’re very excited about the 2013 programme – over 40 shows in 3 days and truly something for everyone. It’s an inspiring schedule covering drama, dance, music, theatre, film and visual arts as well as literature. We can certainly rely on the artists who are appearing to come up with something to make us think, to challenge us and entertain. We hope this programme helps you navigate around the festival so you can spend the maximum amount of time enjoying yourself. The festival is thanks to the generosity of Annie and Frank Maskew, a Rochdale couple who met in the original Rochdale Library in the 1950s. They shared a profound love of literature and philosophy and left a sum of money to be used on resources and events related to literature and philosophy, ensuring classic works are available for future generations.

I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to put this festival together and give a warm welcome to all our visitors.

Make sure you see something new, soak up the atmosphere and try something a bit different – you’re likely to discover a treat!

To have such a fantastic line up for our first festival is wonderful and really sets the standard for years to come. I hope you enjoy it.

Enjoy the festival.

The Mask of Anarchy (film) Rochdale Movie Makers and local writing groups Members of Touchstones Creative Writing Group, Langley Writers, Co-operative Members Group, Weaving Words and Cartwheel Arts, gathered together to perform readings of The Mask of Anarchy on 17 August 2013 across the borough. In this film of the event, readers from our creative writing groups bring to life Shelley’s epic poem. On 16 August 1819, an estimated 60,000 people from across Lancashire gathered at St Peter’s Field, Manchester, to campaign for parliamentary reform against a backdrop of poverty and squalid living conditions. Magistrates sent in the cavalry to ‘disperse’ the crowd and arrest the speakers. Fifteen were killed and hundreds were injured as the cavalry slashed at innocent people with their sabres. Poet Percy Bysshe Shelley was so disgusted by these atrocities, that in response he penned The Mask of Anarchy, which explores the plight of the British working classes in 1819. 194 years later, this film premiere showcases a new interpretation of this historic event. Rochdale Central Library 12:30 (1 hour) Free (non-ticketed) Suitable for age 14+

Melvyn has always loved those traditional stories you first hear in childhood and puppetry is the perfect medium to catch the flavour of often larger than life characters. Rochdale Central Library 18:00 (1 hour) Free (booking required) Suitable for all ages (Under 14s must be accompanied by an adult)

It’S all in ThE eyeS

We’ve all heard that saying ‘eyes are the window to the soul’ – but also to your age! In fact, many studies have shown that the eye area is the biggest give away when strangers are asked to guess your age. When we hit 40, our skin loses its elasticity and begins to thin – disaster! But although it may be difficult to stop Mother Nature in her tracks, there are still a few sneaky ways to fool everyone into thinking you are 10 years younger… The big one is eyelashes – looking after your eyelashes properly is under rated! Make sure you thoroughly cleanse your face, including the eye area, before you go to bed. Use a cleanser specially formulated for eyes. I recommend using an eye make up remover that includes cornflower; my personal favourite being Darphin’s Gentle eye make up remover. This brilliant blue flower has a long history when it comes to treating eye related troubles, due to its anti-bacterial and inflammatory qualities. It has also been proven to brighten the whites of your eyes, giving you that sparkle back!

Another well-kept eye secret is tea bags – whether you prefer black tea or herbal, both work brilliantly to soothe puffy, inflamed eyes. Caffeinated teas work well to constrict the blood vessels around your eyes, reducing swelling, whilst herbal teas contain buckets of anti irritants which help soothe redness and irritation. Soak the tea bags in hot water and leave to cool, then place a one over each eye and relax! Another tip for those summer months – place the tea bags in the fridge and apply for a refreshing boost.

So now you have your eye care routine down to a fine art, it’s time to concentrate on those few things we might all need a bit of extra help with. A problem the majority of women have as they get older is short, straight lashes that just don’t seem to grow! An absolute lifesaver for this problem is Mavala Double Lash Serum. Clinically proven to target short, weak lashes, it gives a boost of vitality and contains a mixture of proteins and elastins to gradually leave your lashes fuller, stronger, longer, and more importantly, healthier!

That brings us on to make up. One of the biggest reasons we sometimes look older than we really are is due to badly applied eye make up – and now your lashes are back to their former glory, you need the perfect eye make up to compliment them! When it comes to eye shadow, the key is to apply a lighter shade all over the eye area, including the lid, right up to the brow bone. Follow this with a medium shade applied all over the lid, and finally your darkest shade in the crease of your eye. Highlight the arch of your eyebrows and the inner corners of each eye for extra definition. Apply a thin line of eyeliner in black or brown by gently pulling the corner of your eye outwards, forming a straight line along your lashes. Be careful how much eye make up you apply, because as you get older less really is more!

fabulous eyes never go out of fashion, so no matter what time of the year it is, try these few top tips and keep your eyes looking beautiful!

Get me active! “I need something to help get me active!” Can you hear yourself saying that? It’s what we hear all the time and Link4Life’s new activ8teme programme is designed to do just that. Being launched in September 2013, activ8teme is an exciting new programme of sports activities for adults. It’s a programme of easy to access sessions that are low cost and ‘pay as you go’ and each is led by qualified and experienced instructors ready to help you take those first important steps. At the beginning we will concentrate on eight main sports – athletics, badminton, cycling, exercise and fitness, football, golf, rounders and swimming. This could be your chance to finally realise your ambition to learn to swim – in specially designed adult ‘Swim Start’ groups or one-to-one lessons. If you have always wanted to try golf then you can now have a weekly session under the watchful eye of our golf professional who will teach you the basic skills of putting, chipping and pitching – and a one hour weekly session will cost you just £2. These are just a few examples of our exciting new project!

GET ME ACTIVE!

HAVE FUN ~ MEET FRIENDS ~ CONTROL WEIGHT FEEL GOOD ~ IMPROVE FITNESS ~ DEVELOP STAMINA GET OUT AND ABOUT ~ TRY SOMETHING NEW

LOW COST SESSIONS | PAY AS YOU GO | MEMBERSHIP FREE

Often what stops you taking up a new activity is having no-one to go with. The activ8teme programme solves all of those barriers and also provides you with the equipment you need. No need to find a partner or team – just turn up and join in. The activ8teme programme has benefited from over £204,000 of National Lottery funding from the Sport England Community Sport Activation Fund and Link4Life is among 32 successful bidders receiving a share of £5.1million of funding to support grassroots sport activity across the country as part of the lasting legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Building stamina, meeting new friends, feeling good and increasing fitness are just some of the benefits to those taking part. Our aim is to get 25,000 residents more active over the next three years. Let’s hope you’re one of them!

DRAWING ON EXPERIENCE

Joe Matthews has come a long way since the childhood days when he and his brothers were kept quiet with a pencil and some paper, drawing their own cartoon characters - to fight existing Marvel and DC superheroes and baddies! This early appreciation of comics, cartoons and art set forth Joe's career as a self-taught comic artist.

At the tender age of 13 he was already publishing and selling his own comic fanzine, and when he was 14 the legendary '2000 A.D.' comic published one of his drawings. It's no surprise that when he left school, his first job was doing creative artwork and design for PS Printshop. By 1985 he was well established, drawing Ivy The Terrible, Ball Boy and Billy Whizz stories for The Beano. He had a regular newspaper strip called 'The Sunday Gang' for the Newcastle-based 'Sunday Sun'. Trials for Count Duckula, Barbie and Rug Rats comics eventually led to Joe getting the contract with Warner Bros to draw the monthly 'Tom & Jerry' and 'Baby Loonie Tunes' comics. His continued fascination with the creative talent of other artists and the variety of work he was asked to produce, further developed his repertoire. You will see his illustrations on greetings cards, in Lucky Bag comics and in ‘Little Monsters’ books. He has also worked as the storyboard artist for BBC cartoon series Bob the Builder!

Joe set up his current business, Impact Printworks to concentrate on several local projects. Despite having clients in USA and Australia he creates the monthly All Star Squad comic for Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre Kids Club and is developing Princess Pop Dancers comics for Shaw Dance School Anna's Dance. Most recently he has teamed up with his wife Michelle to form a new company 'Animal Impact PE Ltd', to create a unique ready-prepared PE coaching programme for Key Stage 2 in primary schools. Joe's animated characters help engage children

in Michelle's themed PE lessons and teachers are supplied with illustrated crosscurricular worksheets to bring learning from PE into the classroom. Joe attributes his creative ability to ‘an overactive imagination and people watching’. He is frequently asked if he actually drew things with his hands. The answer is 'yes'! All his work starts on paper, but he has fully embraced modern technology to speed up the colouring process using Photoshop software. His advice for any aspiring cartoonists is to ‘keep doodling’.

Sick of your bland, fried chicken breast? Why not try something different – guinea fowl has a fabulous, earthy, robust taste which to me tastes of what chicken used to taste like years ago before they started to give them lots of artificial feeds. Cook it in the same way you would a chicken and just taste the difference. SERvES 4 2 whole guinea fowl 500ml chicken stock 200ml red wine 1 carrot diced fine 1 stick celery diced fine 1 onion chopped fine 2 cloves garlic chopped

PASTRY 200g plain flour 100g butter - chilled Pinch curry powder 1 teaspoon poppy seeds Water

CABBAgE 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 rashers bacon – cut into thin strips 1 shallot - chopped fine 1 clove garlic - chopped fine ½ small savoy cabbage – shredded fine 100ml white wine 200ml whipping cream

METhoD 1) Remove the breasts and legs from the guinea fowls. Place the legs in a casserole pan with the chicken stock, red wine, carrot, celery, onion and garlic and simmer gently for 1 hour. Take out the legs and leave to cool. Reduce the cooking liquor by half and leave to cool. 2) Remove the skin from the guinea fowl legs and flake the flesh into small pieces. Season and place in small ramekin dishes and add some of the vegetable and the reduced red wine liquor. 3) For the pastry, rub the butter into the flour to form a breadcrumb consistency. Add the curry and poppy seeds. Add just enough water for the mix to come together to form a soft dough. Leave to firm in the fridge for 20 minutes. 4) Roll out onto a floured board and cut into rounds just slightly bigger than the ramekin. Brush the ramekin ridge with a touch of water, place the pastry on top and pinch. Leave in fridge until ready to use.

5) When ready to serve bake at 180º for 15 minutes until the pastry is cooked and golden. 6) Heat the olive oil in a sauté pan, season the guinea fowl breasts then place in the pan skin side down. Cook until golden on both sides – remove from the pan, then roast for 10 minutes 180°c until cooked through. 7) Add the bacon to the pan that you seared the guinea fowl in, fry for 2 minutes, add the onion and garlic and fry for a further 2 minutes then add the cabbage. Deglaze with the white wine and then stir in the cream – season to taste. 8) Serve the hot pot pie with the creamy cabbage and guinea fowl breast.

SUN 8TH DEC FATHER CHRISTMAS FUN RUN

Father Christmas' a-plenty on this festive fundraiser around Hollingworth Lake. Adults and children alike stroll, meander, run, jog and now with Hospice mascot Springy the Frog, hop, around Hollingworth Lake dressed as Father Christmas – a lovely, healthy and fun family day out for all the family, age and fitness no limit.

The warm, heady, fun, family days of summers gone-by were revisited recently at Springhill Hospice’s very first Yesteryear Festival, at Collop Gate Farm. Families both young and old came together, turning out in force to show their support for the Hospice whilst enjoying a good old-fashioned summer family day out. Over 50 stalls overflowing with all sort of goodies from ice-cream to cupcakes, raffles and tombolas to traditional sweets and even Temperance drinks graced the cavernous farm buildings. 1940’s music sang out from the Naafi Café as the smell of Pimms drifted through the audience and they were entertained by some 40's dancing. Cream teas, a hog roast, miniature tanks, boats and a rifle range also pleased the crowds but the biggest crowd pleaser had to be the tanks, showing off their might on the field for all to enjoy. “The sights and sounds of the festival were amazing , it was a fantastic day and one we hope to enjoy again next year” said Sarah Lee Ford, Springhill’s Income Services Lead at Springhill Hospice, “The day was a roaring success with over 4,000 coming to support the Hospice and we raised a whopping £17,000. That is phenomenal and we can’t thank you all enough”.

CHOIR ROCKS ECHO ARENA

Rock Choir members from Oldham, Littleborough, Norden, Hyde and Middleton enjoyed their biggest performance yet, when they joined more than 5,000 fellow 'Rockies' for a unique mega-concert at Echo Arena Liverpool. One person who will never forget the extraordinary, feel good concert is local Rock Choir Leader Phil Reynolds. Having just sung on stage, love struck Phil went down on knee and proposed to his stunned girlfriend Joanne Gent, who was sitting in the audience. More than 6,500 people held their breath as they waited for her response. A huge cheer filled the arena when Joanne said yes! With lots of exciting shows in the pipeline, Phil is on the look out for more local people who love to sing. He commented: "I'm inviting anyone who is interested in joining Rock Choir to come along for a free 90-minute taster session at any of our rehearsals," says Phil. "You don't have to read music and there are no auditions. Just turn up and join in!" To book a free taster session or to find out more please visit www.rockchoir.com or call Phil on 07798 823824.

Local MP for Rochdale, Mr Simon Danczuk attended the presentation.

Young Kandel visitors enjoy delights of Whitworth Thirty-three young people from Whitworth’s twin town of Kandel in Germany recently made a whistle-stop visit to the town. The young people, aged 14 and 15 years, are all students at Kandel’s Realschule (secondary school). This year, the young people visited Cowm Leisure, off High Barn Lane. John Whittle from Cowm Leisure took the party out in his Land Rover Discovery, going off the beaten track and off road for an exhilarating cross-country experience. Town Councillor, Jim Mellor commented: “Cowm Leisure is one of Whitworth’s ‘hidden gems’... John certainly gave them an experience they will never forget – they went up and down hills, 80

through water and in areas of the landscape that few vehicles have ever been to. Tom and Jack from Cowm Leisure also gave them a fantastic display of their motorbiking skills.” The group then called at the Berni Inn in Facit for their lunch before enjoying a dip in the pool at Whitworth Leisure Centre. Councillor Mellor said: “The Town Twinning Committee is keen to keep the relationship between Kandel and Whitworth going; the annual visit of these young people can only help to perpetuate the twinning movement between our towns and its always great fun to welcome the young people here.”
