E

very New Year I’m reminded that people want to reinvent themselves. You can’t tell me you haven’t logged onto your social media pages, email, or turned on the television to only hear the phrase millions of people are using “New Year, New You.’ People will wait 365 days to create new possibilities for themselves, not realizing that everyday they wake up is a new day to be a new you. Thanks to Oprah, right after Thanksgiving, I drove across town to Buckhead and purchased the only in-store copy Barnes and Noble had of Steven Pressfield’s ‘The Art of War’. If you are a creative like me who sometimes struggles with internal obstacles of success ( otherwise known as procrastination), you’ll appreciate how Pressfield comedically helps his readers identify, defeat, and unlock their inner barriers. Reading ‘The Art of War’ really conceptualized, for me, why waiting until a New Year to become a “new you” is nothing more than an internal barrier that’s keeping you from weeks of unlimited possibilities.

New Year, New Thrills. I became re-inspired reading our cover story Big Business, Love, Big Legacy on page 22. Big Tigger’s career over the last couple of decades has been nothing short of amazing. I’m sure he never thought saying yes to opportunities while figuring out the details later, would eventually win him an Emmy. Like Tigger, I too am learning to say yes to opportunities that scare me, but

would be beneficial to my career. Although the New Year, New You slogan is catchy, “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” Tomorrow may never come and you would have cheated yourself and the world of your contributions.

andarin Oriental, Atlanta, a 580 ft tall skyscraper with 42 floors, was the perfect location for an evening shoot with our cover guy Darian “Big Tigger” Morgan. The Taipan lounge, with its orchid colored walls, oversized leather couches, and velvet tufted sofas overlooking the Mandarin’s English Garden, helped to bring the right amount of elegance to soften Tigger’s big personality. After explaining the concept of the shoot, discussed his wardrobe changes; provided exclusively by Bloomingdales Atlanta, and took a few test shots, he opened up and our photographer Darnell Wilburn was able to capture him like you’ve never seen him. Turns out Big Tigger has the warmest personality and helped make this shoot memorable. — THE EDITORS

Beauty

Achieve this Look with a Little Help from PAGE 10 | tastemakermag.com | JAN/FEB

I

f you are a woman in today’s age, you are probably on-the-go. Let’s face it, nobody really has time to spend countless hours getting ready in the morning. I definitely understand because I am a modern woman myself and have found a beauty routine that works best with my schedule using COVERGIRL products that is quick and easy. After you have moisturized, primed and put foundation on your face, start with your eyes. I used Makeup Forever’s aqua cream, then COVERGIRL’s eyeshadow in Tapestry Taupe on the lid. For the crease, I used a brown matte eyeshadow & I darkened the “outer V” with a bronzer by COVERGIRL mineral bronze. I lightly filled in

her eyebrows with an Anastasia brow pencil in Brunette. Then, I lined her eyes and waterline using a LineExact pencil liner by COVERGIRL. I used the compact, pretty Clean Glow trio blush by COVERGIRL (100 Roses). To pull the look together, I used the gorgeous Decadent 287 lipstick from their LipPerfection line and finished the look by lightly dusting the Ebony Bronze bronzer from their Queen collection on the higher planes of her face where the sun would naturally highlight. And ta-da! Easy breezy right? For the evening look (pictured above), I added some Blue Brown pigment by MAC in the center , mixed it with Club eyeshadow on the outer & inner “V of her eyelid. < Nalani Bott | Makeup Artist

R

ebekah came in with a fully layered and tapered bob cut. For the styling I used a light holding spray by Sebastian and went through with even distribution of product, not for hard curls but to ensure the curls would last throughout the entire photo shoot. I made very loose wave curls using an FHI flat iron set at about 350 degrees. After curling, I brushed out the curls using a paddle brush to loosen them up and give her maximum volume and movement.. < Akia Logan | Hair Stylist

I

gave Mary a dark & sultry evening look with a cut crease. As the name implies, the technique is used to the give the eyes a really dramatic, defined crease. To achieve this look, I started with Cover Girl’s liquid foundation in Tawny all over Mary’s face and followed with blending in concealers for highlights and contouring. For the eyes, you simply “cut” the crease of the eye with a sharp line of intense color. Start with PAGE 12 | tastemakermag.com | JAN/FEB

a medium toned shadow and apply it on the eyelid from the lash line to the crease. Then create a sharp crease using a precision brush and the darkest shade. Follow the shape of your natural crease making a single line of color, make it boldest at the outer edges and fade inward. Blending and diffusing is key to achieving a clean and professional cut crease. Go further to add some glamour and complete the eyes with liquid liner and false lashes! To finish Mary’s look and add a touch of brightness,

I used Cover Girl + Olay Pressed Powder all over her skin. For a natural glow, I used Cover Girl’s Cheekers Blush in Classic Pink. Finally, to create soft, beautiful, smooth lips, I used Cover Girl’s lipstick in Heavenly. < D’anna Chambers | Makeup Artist

M

arima came in with a full head of hair extensions. For styling I used a light styling wax by S Factor with more concentration on the ends. Body waves were formed using a Marcel iron by wrapping the hair around the entire curling iron forming loose S form waves. After curling I combed through all the curls with a fine tooth comb, in order to bring all the curls together forming a deep body wave pattern. Light edge control was applied to her edges to smooth everything down. < Akia Logan | Hair Stylist

What would beyoncE ?Do? A

re you s t i l l swerving to Beyoncé’s new CD? We are too, but we couldn’t help but notice how gorgeous ‘Yoncé looked in each one of her videos. While she was frolicking around Drunk In Love on wet sand, we couldn’t take our eyes off her gold lighting minx nails and had to know more about how the Queen Bee keeps her nails looking so fab! When you want the scoop about B’s nails you call Lisa Logan, one of the most sought after celebrity manicurist for an exhaustive list of superstars. Check out what she told us about Beyoncé’s nails and what you should be doing to keep your nails looking fierce.

According to Lisa, nail polish never really expires, but she suggest the key to keeping your polish “fresh” is storing your bottles in the right temperatures (keep away from extreme heat) and she says when

1

your bottle of polish is half empty--just toss it!

2

When it comes to Salon Etiquette, know the establishment that you’re patronizing. Some manicurists will welcome

On Valentine’s Day Beyoncé would want her nails.... “On Valentine’s Day Beyoncé would not wear anything on her nails that is typical of Valentine’s Day. So while everyone is wearing red...Beyonce would wear blue. [lol] She’s a trendsetter and a girly girl that likes to make her own rules”, says Logan.

Lisa Logan and Beyoncé your small talk and others may find it a bit annoying.

3

All polishes aren’t created equal. Just because a bottle looks fancy and comes with a lofty price tag, doesn’t mean it’s good. Lisa say’s

it’s all about functionality and having a good polish starts with its brush (applicator).

4

The key to beautiful nails is: Shape, Hydrate and Moisturize.

Gel, Acrylic or Natural? “A good quality gel for wearability.”

“Oval. Her natural nails are an almond shape.”

Would she want her nails cut or filed? “Filed.”

What’s Beyonce’s favorite minx nail design? “An old faithful would be Gold Lighting.”

How does Beyoncé like her nails? Square, oval, round or square round?

Top Apps & Tools to Help You Stay Great By Jalil Lindsey-Lowe & Monica Ponder

I

t’s that time of year again! It’s a new year – a time for new beginnings, assessment of what’s really working and what’s not, and a rededication to life goals. Many will flock to their nearest gym (which will most likely be crowded around this time) and go hard for the next several weeks. But, for many others, life’s business will slowly begin to dominate those visits and make reaching fitness and nutrition goals more of a challenge as the year goes on. So, what are the best strategies to help us stay on track throughout the year, so that we are not having this same conversation at the end of 2014? We consulted with acclaimed personal trainer and certified chef, Jalil Lindsey-Lowe, from Newport Beach, Virginia to give us some insights on the latest web and social media apps that can make tracking our fitness and nutrition goals a little easier this year. Here are her top recommendations (and most are free!):

Activity Tracker: Fit bit

Activity trackers are wireless enabled wearable devices that measure data such as the number of steps walked, number of stairs climbed or calories burned, quality of sleep and other personal metrics. It is ideal for busy professionals who would like to track their daily activities. The device syncs wirelessly with its website and displays comprehensive trend maps of your metrics day by day. These range in price from $60-$130. You can also download your data from the Fitbit website for a nominal membership fee.

Running: mapmyrun.com

The site allows you to log all your workouts and map the distances you jog or walk. The website also has a complementary phone app that allows users to log real-time activities – and it gives you metrics for each. The website is a great way to keep track of what you’ve done for the week and it uses incentives to encourage you to reach certain milestones of fitness. Use this resource in two ways: track the distance when you walk/jog a new route, and use the site to map a new route in advance. It will sync your runs with a Fitbit as well.

Running: Run Keeper

If you are looking for a one-stop-shop to cover everything you need for your runs, Runkeeper will track your time, distance, calories burned, and heart rate. You can hear updates on your progress intermittently and even get coaching cues from the app’s built-in audio coach. The app also allows you to control your music from within the app, using the default application for playing your audio files. Runkeeper allows users to track their goals and analyzes progress. And even better, it will help you establish a detailed plan for your ongoing fitness efforts. You can also sync the app with your friends through social media.

PAGE 16 | tastemakermag.com | JAN/FEB

Running: Endomondo

Close on the heels of Runkeeper in terms of popularity, Endomondo offers all of the same core functions but ultimately puts it in a different package. If you want to emphasize social support and a goal-centered fitness plan, you might find this app a little more attuned to your needs. Endomondo has an active installed membership that you can reach through the internal social network, and it puts your fitness plan front and center in an integrated calendar format.

Nutrition: MyFitnessPal

This free online calorie counter and diet plan keeps track of the calories you have available and those burned. The database has more than 3 million foods for you to conveniently track your calories. It is a great complement to a more comprehensive fitness and activity tracker (e.g. pedometer, Fitbit). Myfitnesspal is also awesome because it can sync with those other apps.

Weightloss: Lose it

Very similar to my fitness pal, this app will allow you to calculate roughly how long it will take you to lose a predetermined amount of weight by calculating a healthy weight loss average per week. This app tells you how many calories you need based on your weight and level of daily activity. By logging in your food and exercise daily, it automatically tells you how many calories you have left for the day and if you are in a surplus or deficit. You can also connect with other people through this app and encourage one another with a little friendly competition. This app syncs with all social media platforms so you can share your progress with others for even more accountability

Strength Training: GYM Hero

This app is great for the weightlifter, crossfitter, gym rat or the person doing bodyweight only exercises! Everyone knows that in order to progress, tracking workouts or logging is key. This app is also web based. You can create unlimited custom workouts, add new exercises to old routines or delete them entirely. The app gives detailed workout summaries and even has an online locker where you can view your workout logs online. This app also syncs with Run Keeper.

Music: Fit Radio

For those who live to workout to dynamic music, you may enjoy this web and app-based music option. Its great because its music is purposed to power workouts! The app offers access to all genres of music and you can pick the mix you need for the intensity level of exercise you’ll be doing. It is also great because there are no ads and unlimited skips! Thw app can be synced with Nike, mapmyrun!, and others. Its free but can be upgraded to premium for just 2.99 per month. Its available on iTunes, android and blackberry

Stereo Quality Head phones: “Beats” by Dre’ Wireless headphones or Monster isport earbuds! You need a great quality headphone to help power you through those tough workouts. We recommend the monster iSport earbuds because they are sweat proof and the unique design fits perfectly in your ear. No matter how hard you sweat, they aren’t sliding out of your ear! Plus the sound quality is amazing!

J

Cardio: GYM BOSS interval timer

The GYMBOSS is a small, easy to use, repeating interval timer. This multi-use timer has many versatile functions that make it beneficial to virtually any type of exercise program. Interval training has been scientifically proven to be the most effective type of cardio for fat loss and conditioning! Whether you’re using it for high-intensity interval training like tabatas or sprints, MMA, kickboxing, boxing, tempo lifts, Crossfit, kettelebells it’s a great little gadget that does the thinking for you. It effectively beeps on working and resting intervals.

Collage Picture App: Photogrid

Duh! You need to take before and afters to track your results. Tracking your physical (aesthetic) progress also keeps you accountable! Sometimes the scale may not budge or move as fast as we’d like even with our best efforts - but a picture speaks 1000 words. Take a picture once day 1 and every 4 weeks, and compare the photos! That will keep you going when the scale won’t! This app because it has multiple backgrounds, a text application, and its compatible with facebook, twitter, instagram, and tumbler so you can share your progress with the world (or with Tastemaker Magazine) if you wish. Please use these recommendations to find the right fit for you. Good luck – let’s check back in in December 2014. You may share your progress with us on social media throughout the year.

Quick tips to stay on track with your fitness & nutrition goals in 2014

Practice Healthy Habits

Forget Fiascos

When trying to stay in good spirits, it’s important to practice healthy habits. Start with exercise. Take up yoga or join a kickboxing class. Be sure to hydrate! The main habit that should never be overlooked is drinking the proper amount of water everyday. Hydrate mind, body and soul to have a better outlook on life.

Guess what? 2005 is gone and so is 2013. Move on! We all have those memories of people we have wronged or horrible things that were said to us, but there is no reason to carry pain from the past. Learn from your failures, forgive those who have hurt you and make the effort to clear your mind.

There are tons of articles, journals, apps, equipment etcetera but the foundation of long-term success starts with these 5 principles:

Start slow. Change one thing

at a time, not 10. Research shows that those who are most successful are those that implement small changes over time than those who do a complete overhaul. Too much too fast is overwhelming and breeds failure most of the time. Try committing to the gym or working out 1 to 2x per week at first instead of 6. We guarantee, Have a made up mind. Be a month of 2-a-days 6x per week ready to make the change for and you’ll burn out fast. Instead of you and because you want a completely swearing off solids and better quality life. Superficial becoming a juicing guru, try havreasons are just that and they ing a smoothie for breakfast. No wont sustain you for a lifetime. one can live off of juice…trust us.

Create Encouraging Environments It’s impossible to never have a bad day, but when there are uplifting friends in your circle, even the worst of days can be filled with joy. This one is simple: if your friends don’t support or enrich your life, then it’s most likely time to review, remove and then replace old friends with people who make you truly happy.

Oblige Others

Enjoy Every Day

Take the focus off of you for a minute. Spend time making sure someone else gets the love and attention they deserve. When you help the less fortunate or even someone you know who may need a little pick-me-up, it will make that person feel better and in turn, you will gain a sense of accomplishment as well.

Sing and smile. Laugh. Be merry! Soak in and savor every moment good or bad. These moments make up your life. Be present! Life is full of obstacles, so challenge yourself to change your reactions to positive ones and you will see a difference. By Hope Alyssa

Be accountable. Whether you Set a goal. Arbitrarily working Last but not least…Duh, be hire a trainer or have that ride or out is the easiest way to inconsis- consistent! There will be bad die friend that’s going to keep you in check, you need to have some type of accountability. Having no accountability will easily have you dunking Oreos in whole milk on more than too many occasions. Join a social media platform and log your progress. I bet the fact that you have a following will surely keep you on track! Its free, and its extremely motivating and its fun. You may end up inspiring others.

tency. You could decide that you’re going to lose 10 in 2 months. Great - work towards it. You may reach it early or it may take a little longer but always be working towards something. Hire a trainer to map out your goal for you. Get a coach to help you train for a special event. Sign up for a 5k and train toward running the entire race. Goal setting helps develop consistency.

days. Always make sure that those bad days don’t turn into weeks or months. Get back on the track ASAP. Consistency is developed over time it is developed from making mistakes and continually getting back on track within in the same week or month. With the exception of incapacitating illness, don’t let anything stop you from living your healthiest best life!

Healthy Love is the New Sexy What You Can do this Month: February 1 is National Wear Red Day Show your support and advocacy for this issue by wearing red – whether it’s a red dress, shirt, a ‘red dress’ pin, red neck tie, red socks or even some sexy, fiery red lipstick, show the world you passionately support heart health. Take a photo and send it to Tastemaker via social media!

Get Your Blood Pressure Checked Weekly Blood pressure is typically recorded as two numbers, written as a ratio like this: 120/80. The top number (systolic), which is also the higher of the two numbers, measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats. The bottom number (diastolic), which is the lower of the two numbers, measures the pressure in the arteries between heartbeats (when the heart muscle is resting between beats and refilling with blood). Normal blood pressure is less than 120 (systolic) over less than 80 (diastolic). Please talk with your healthcare provider if you have any questions.

Show Yourself Some Healthy Love this February By Monica Lindsey Ponder

February is the month for recognizing love and, for or those in love, dating or married, February 14 is the day that you demonstrate your affections for each other. For those who are happily single (or slowly moving towards contentment), it is a day where you ignore the mushy posts on social media from all the happy couples, and aim to be more intentional about loving on yourself, getting drunk in your own awesomeness. But this year, TASTEMAKER is encouraging you to be intentional about a new type of love – healthy love. Yes, we want to encourage you to pursue relationships that are communicative, constructive, supportive, and constantly growing, but we also want to encourage you to love being healthy, inside and out. There are two ways we are asking you to accomplish this in February.

February is National Heart Month According to the American Psychological Association, young adults find it particularly hard to manage their stress and get the healthcare that meets their needs. The survey found that Millennials have an average stress level of 5.4 on a 10-point scale, compared to the national average of 4.9. Although many appear to value healthy lifestyles and stress-related issues as important for their physical and mental well-being, their experiences are not matching their expectations. Basically, we do a lot, are everywhere, and always have full schedules and plates – this can be stressful at times and wear on our hearts. So this February, let’s not just talk about taking breaks and being healthy, let’s be proactive about managing our stress levels and monitoring our heart health.

It’s Time for Us to Take a Stand Lack of awareness of HIV status can affect HIV rates in communities. Late diagnosis of HIV infection is common, which results in missed opportunities to get early medical care and prevent transmission to others. Stigma, fear, discrimination, homophobia, and negative perceptions about HIV testing can also place too many African Americans at higher risk. Many at risk for infection fear stigma more than infection and may choose instead to hide their high-risk behavior rather than seek counseling and testing.

What Advice Would You Give Your 18 Year Old Self

February 7 is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day African American’s are in a crisis when it comes to HIV. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC): African Americans accounted for an estimated 44% of all new HIV infections among adults and adolescents (aged 13 years or older) in 2010, despite representing only 12% to14% of the US population.

Amber | Choose your major wisely--and don’t sign up for credit cards....

In 2010, black men accounted for 70% of the estimated 20,900 new HIV infections among all adult and adolescent blacks.

In 2010, black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) represented an estimated 72% of new infections among all black men and 36% of an estimated 29,800 new HIV infections among all MSM. More new HIV infections occurred among young black MSM (aged 13-24), than in any other age or racial group of MSM. Further, the estimated rate of new HIV infections for black women was 20 times as high as the rate for white women, and almost five times as high as that of Latinas.

Get to the gym now! lol.

Jason | Focus only on what you can control. Go to school for a science related career because you’’ll enjoy it. Never trust a big butt and a smile.

Neico | Watch your credit. Choose the right major for college.

Debra | Haha #wouldnttellmyselfanythingbecauseIdontlistenanyway Ros | Do things outside your comfort zone and continually try new expe-

riences. Take the student loans and go to Kent versus starting at UC first then transferring.... By the time you finish your doctorate and see those loans you’ll laugh at being hesitant over a $2000 loan in the beginning... Oh and don’t stop at those credit card tables on campus that offer free pizza... You’ll regret both when you turn 30.

Marvin | Don’t blow money on music and rims! Mercedes | Your worth is more than rubies. Remember, God placed you here for a purpose, discover it then focus on it. Oh and one more thing, you have to let go and let God! Now go and live a wise life, full of peace and joy!

Kevin | Invest!!! Prepare for the future--cause I never thought I would see my 30’s coming out of Baltimore as a young African American.

Tameka | You have the ‘work hard’ down, try to balance that with some ‘play hard’!

Adre’An | Don’t burn bridges... Shut up and keep your thoughts to your-

self... Make sure others who help you know you appreciate it... Use school activities as training to learn how to network with people in the future... Try it--even if you think you are going to fail at it anyway....Sometimes breaking the rules can catapult you to success.....the list continues........

Tiffany | Friends come and go, focus on you, make smart decisions, save your money.

On the Path to Greatness

ife takes us on unexpected journeys, with surprises at almost every intersection. Sitting here feels like deja vu as I anxiously wait for Darian “Big Tigger” Morgan to walk trough the lobby doors of the posh W Midtown Atlanta Hotel after finishing up his drive home spot at Atlanta’s V-103. This feeling brings me back nearly15 years ago as a Sophomore attending Howard University. To think I was professing my love for hip hop to a hungry up-and-coming lyrical wordsmith who has shared the mic with some of the coldest lyricists of all time– is simply amazing. As soon as we reconnected, he couldn’t resist free-styling about my locs “Big Tig is coming right out that red box, sitting next to the sexy girl with them dreadlocs.” Was this a challenge of sorts? It likely was not, just Tigger’s natural innate ability to freestyle without warning. The scholar in me had to take things a step further to prove I too learned something during my short stint as his intern. As you read on, notice my freestyles, but take note, I’ll never be as good at rhyming as Big Tigger. JUST LIKE THE AVERAGE COLLEGE BOY, HE’S STARVING, HE GOT TO EAT- ONLY THING THAT SETS HIM APART IS THAT THE BOY’S AFTER THOSE BEATS- ROLLING UP 95 IN THE DARK OF NIGHT- MAYBE IT WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER IF HE JUST TOOK A FLIGHT Tigger started in 1993 as an intern with WPGC 95.5 in Maryland/DC. As assistant/producer/intern for Albie Dee, the music director/nighttime personality, he quickly made his way to the primetime broadcaster that we know today. This road to stardom started out in the research department at WPGC as a one-time intern for his social psychology degree from the University of Maryland (UOM). “It was just going to be a quick

in and out at WPGC,” the MC replied. “I figured it would be cool. I could meet some people, get some free records; because I was a DJ, and just get back on the music scene.” (So, hey for all those degree hoppers don’t feel so bad, you could just end up having your own cover story.) On a fluke, Big Tigger’s career was changed when he heard his mentor, Albie Dee, do a live on air break/commercial and he was totally changed. With a hunger that only on-air radio could satisfy, Tigger got a one-day-a-week show at UOM’s college radio station to practice—the WPGC crew loved it. The master of witty words went from intern, to having a weekend night gig on 92Q in Baltimore and a weekday night gig at WPGC all while in school and working on campus.Tigger met this challenging schedule with the mantra, “Say yes and figure it out later.” The hardest working man in radio got the attention of BET and went from voice-overs, to RapCity:Tha Basement, and now has Atlanta’s V-103 to call his home. THE PEOPLE AT DEF LEFT HIM IN A JAM - IT’S ONLY FAIR THAT THEY MAKE IT UP WITH RED AND METHOD MAN Some may think that Tigger’s freestyle flow came on the scene in 1999 with the introduction of Rap City: Tha Basement, but he has had touched the mic many moons before that coveted booth. His versatile flow crowned him as the go-to guy in freestyle when his connect at Def Jam asked him to hold on playing a leaked upcoming new release “How High” by Redman and Method Man in the late 90s. It wasn’t until after Tigger’s competition played the highlyanticipated record first, which is a crusher in radio wars, that Def Jam put Redman and Method Man on a plane to officially debut their new song “How High” on-air live with Big Tig. In an impromptu question and answer session with the two personalities, a 25 minute live freestyle cypher took over the airways. In these minutes, Tigger proved himself not only as an on-air personality, but a master of words that forged a title that screamed authentic hip-hip.

he make it to Rap City, but his role at Rap City’s Tha Basement has forever left its imprint on some of the most promising careers in hip-hop. TO BE THE BEST YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO PAY THE PRICE- LIKE KRS-One, EMINEM, JAY-Z, AND FOR NEW MCs TODAY- VANILLA ICE “Free-styling today is sort of a lost art,” replied Tigger, believing that an emphasis for the war of words has been watered down. “Freestyle is something that comes off the top of your head, not pre-formulated or pre-written; that’s what I did every day for seven years.” There are some artists, Tigger insists, who are unbothered by the play on witty words, such as Eminem, the group Slaughterhouse, Joell Ortiz, Crooked i, and Joe Budden, from Love and Hip-Hop NY. Tigger happened to keep up with these specialists of words on his special called Rap City Presents. “So I’m interviewing Eminem and he brought Slaughterhouse and these are like some super lyrical dudes; like these kids are nice. The group Slaughterhouse has destroyed the cypher on BET Hip-Hop Awards for the last three years. So people expect them to be lyrical; they are always going to bring those super-mind words.” Even if you aren’t a die hard lover of hip hop, you may have heard the verse Tigger dropped while freestyling with Eminem that literally goes down as one of the most memorable flows. “CAUSE ORIGINALS IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN REPLACEMENT ‘CAUSE THIS BACKROOM WILL NEVER BE WHAT THE BASEMENT WAS.”-Big Tigger

Tigger gives props to Snoop Dog who in his eyes can come up with something from nothing. “KRS-One absolutely may be the best freestylists ever along with Craig and a dude by the name of Words Worth– for only the true hip-hoppers,” explained Tigger. Of course it would be Jay-Z, coming in first place as being able to drop one of the nicest verses ever known in Big Tig’s eyes. The two new comers that get the most props from Mr. Morgan would be Kendrick Lamar no doubt for his destruction on the song “Control” by Big Sean Ft. Kendrick Lamar and Jay ElecON THE TIMELINE OF HIP-HOP AND THE PEEPS THAT tronica, which happened to drop the line “in the baseDID IT BIG - YOU GOT TO GIVE PROPS TO DJ RED ment”. The next one dropping words of worth comALERT, SPINDERELLA AND YOUR BOY BIG TIG. ing in a close second would be J-Cole. So, hey, all is not lost world of words as explained by the freestyle Tigger’s authenticity as a voiceover for BET’s doc, Big Tigger. When asked about Atlanta’s new lyriTeen Summit is what got him noticed and planted as cist a sort of drop came out about “The Migos, known the new host of Rap City. Growing up in the Bronx, for their cadence above words” but they are doing New York, he recalls telling anyone who would listen things different, the Versace Dons and fellow Atliens, that he’d one day be the host of Rap City. Not only did

are now on my radar since they have been some- truly his best friend in the early days of his career, what commissioned by, in my eyes, a legend. and without his strict sense of responsibility and commitment, fostered from his father, the world OVER THE PAST 20 YEARS HE’S MANAGED TO STAY may never have known “Big Tigger”. REVELEVANT- MAYBE NEXT HE’LL IGNITE A NEW MOVEMENT – JUST FOR THE HELL OF IT YO, HE’S 41 MAYBE HE’LL THINK ABOUT DOING HIS DUTY- WHY NOT SLOW DOWN FOR A SEC “My life has been filled with fun, tragedy, and AND CHECK OUT LITTLE RUDY triumph.” With Big Tigger surpassing his childhood friends from the Bronx, Tigger expresses that if it Last month Tigger’s romantic relationship all stopped tomorrow he would throw one “big ass with early 80’s TV star, Keshia Knight Pulliam went party.” Those last words vibrate from him as a sense viral and speculation that the pair were engaged of pride and accomplishment that fill the room. Al- taunted their social media streams. Tigger sets the though Tigger plans on being in entertainment for record straight by telling me the two are dating but years to come, his focus is now shifting greatly to- are not engaged. This engagement story grabbed its ward helping children. He visualizes a community essence from an article from the National Enquirer, center. This all-encompassing community center, which blew out of proprtion and started a firestorm with every aspect of community in mind, would of rumors. “When I get married everyone will know. have the traditional recreation component but have I’m only doing it one time,” Tigger says with convictechnology, business classes, music classes, and any tion. That’s the cue for everyone to just hold tight

“I believe God puts people in places where choices

are to be made. He puts you at the fork in the road a bunch of times and your choices and your actions lead you to where you are.” trades that will give underprivelaged kids a career advantage. TRAGEDY IN ANY FORM SEPARATES THE MIGHTY FROM THE WEAK-GIVES YOU A VOICE DOESN’T ALLOW YOU TO PEAK- NEVER CONDONES YOU TO SAY WHY BOTHER- HOW DO I KNOW- BECAUSE THESE ARE THE WORDS OF THE FATHER In late 2007, Big Tigger got the worst news of his life. His father, Frank L. Morgan died suddenly leaving Big Tigger for the first time lost, without his voice. To top this off, Tigger had just missed the last opportunity to see his father alive, and that haunts him to this day. “Thanksgiving was very big in my family since I was a kid, not Christmas; it was always Thanksgiving. This was the first time in years that I missed Thanksgiving and my dad died suddenly a few days later.” Tigger credits his father as being his foundation. “The man that I am, I owe all to my father, says Tigger.” Tigger remembers his father as

and let his romance flow just like a few of his verses. He’s visibly not comfortable discussing his love life and gives the impression that it’s the one subject he’d like to keep private, but his eyes lit up as bright as the headlights on his pearl white Mercedes when talking about some of his other unusal loves like candid yams, Palmers Cocoa Butter, Motorcycles and his spiritual faith. When he starts talking about his two motorcycles and small fleet of luxury vehicles, he’s like a kid in a candy store and his detailed account of why he loves his toys quickly reminds you that he loves to do things Big. Although he loves his wheels, God has been the premier passenger on Tigger’s flight to everything that he deems, Big. “If God wants it to be, it will be…no, no, no.” Tigger shook his head admittedly. “I believe God puts people in places where choices are to be made. He puts you at the fork in the road a bunch of times and your choices and your actions lead you to where you are. You

can’t sit on your ass all day and tell me you are going to be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, being lazy not going to school.” Tigger believes that hard work places you where you need to be and yes in some cases God can without a doubt step in and place you where you need to be in life. “God can bestow upon you certain gifts and talents and sometimes place you in the right place at the right time.” YOU HAVE TO STAY GROUNDED- DOWN TO EARTHSTAY HUMBLE-CAN YOU IMAGIME ALL THAT WANTED HIM TO FUMBLE- TIGGER’S GOING TO BE IN THE GAME- IN SOME FORM TIL THE END- HEY WHY NOT EVEN SIGN HIS NEW NAME- THE RELUCTANT LEGEND “I’ve heard from time to time people use the word legend. We’re bringing a legend in the building, a legend in broadcasting. I’m like, legend? I’m like whoa…no. When I think legend I think Mr. Magic in New York; I’m thinking these BIG personalities. I think Donnie Simpson.” Some people have given the I’m humble, honest, and hard-working man this title but he shies away only to give himself the props of being in this entertainment game for over 20 years and still kicking. An Emmy has been presented and won for his show “Direct Access with Big Tigger.” A REAL show that still resonates with millions of people, Rap City’s in Da Basement, calling for its return daily, many world tours, an i-Tunes radio podcast with over 3 million downloads called BT-radio, to top off with the 2003 classic “Snake” by R. Kelly featuring Big Tigger. “I’ve done way more than any average Bronx kid should ever have accomplished in my opinion.” The humble hit-maker proclaimed. In the midst of all these accomplishments, this MC which has a home in the league of many iconoclasts boasts about this featured Tastemaker article and just being able to work. Hey Big Tigger, your personality’s name does start with BIG, and although you may not see yourself in that light, you are just that – BIG!

End.

The Walking Dead The critically acclaimed, award winning cable drama will resume on Sunday, February 9th, where it left off in December on AMC. The Walking Dead tv series is based on the comic book by the same name. Here’s a brief summary of events. As you may recall, the Governor, played by David Morrissey, surfaced this season. He appeared to be a kinder, gentler, introspective man pensive about the sudden turn his life has taken. As a viewer, it’s unnerving to see this side of the ruthless, deceitful Governor. He stumbles upon the Chambler family who he manages to win over after burning down his town of Woodbury. Where he turned on and killed the remaining men and women he once led. The Chambler family consisted of 2 sisters, Tara and Lilly, their terminally I’ll father David and Lilly’s daughter Meghan, upon David’s death, the Governor convinces the women to leave their home in search of greener pastures. In an attempt to escape the walkers, Meghan and the Governor fall into a pit where they were unable to escape. Fortunately for them a former associate from Woodbury, Cesar Martinez, pulled them to safety. Martinez allows the Governor and the ladies to join his camp as long as he abides by the rules. The Governor pretends to agree with the arrangement but later hits Martinez in the back of

The Walking Dead < continued the head and drags him back to the pit and feeds him to the walkers. Eventually, the Governor assumes the leadership role after killing yet another man who stood in his way. The group is vulnerable to walker attacks so the Governor fixates on taking over the prison where his enemies Rick and Michonne reside. Fast forward to the Governor and the group ascending on the prison and confronting Rick. The Governor had captured Michonne and Herschel using them as pawns to take the prison from Rick. After a few moments of speeches and failed negotiations the Governor slices Herschel’s neck with Michonne’s katana and the chaos begins. The walkers hear the shooting and eagerly join in on the melée. After all the smoke clears the Governor and his group were killed by Rick’s group and the walkers. Some of Rick’s Group escape the prison by bus while he and his son Carl leave together. Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead creator, commented on the upcoming episodes in a recent Interview: “We’re going to be going into some very interesting places with all of these characters and seeing new sides to all of them as they figure out how to survive. Been a while since these people have been out on the road and out in the open; they’re very different people at this point. The events in the upcoming episodes are going to change them that much more, which I think will make the show a lot cooler, more dangerous and more exciting.” It sounds like questions will be answered and we will soon know the fate of Rick and the rest of the group in a few short weeks. How will they meet up again? Where will they live now? How will they fair without Herschel and the safety of the prison? Who will replace the Governor as the new villain to hate? Tune in and see.-By F. Salters

onfidence can come in many forms, this time around it’s in being comfortable layering different pieces. With the weather absolutely going south, it’s important to have a few versatile (and warm) pieces you can layer. These pieces will have you looking effortlessly dapper and be essential to accomplishing a sophisticated look. You should already have one or two cardigans somewhere in your closet but if you’re looking to pick another one one up, I suggest adding a shawl collar to your collection. For the most part, a shawl collar cardigan will be thicker and chunkier, so for many men it can be a challenge having many uses for one. I usually see guys wearing it over a t-shirt or treating it as a sports jacket... Not saying this is wrong lets just have some more fun with it! Here I took one of my most casual shawl cardigans by Obey and used it as a layering piece for my suit. The clean lines of the Hugo Boss suit and the thick knit of the cardigan make it a perfect match. Feel free to wear the collar over the jacket but I prefer it underneath. It gives me an effortless look while stating the fact that it’s a bold but tasteful look. I used color and you should too. Starting out-- check out H&M. For an upgrade in quality, Vince makes an identical look for a bit more change. Whatever your choice, try wearing it over another cardigan. Make sure one is neutral while the other has that pop of color. Throw on some raw denim and a coat and you’re ready for a trip downtown to partake in some activities in warmth and style.

hile the weather is still cool (read: freezing), I’m doing my best to remain as stylishly warm as possible. So to that end, I wanted to share with you some of my do’s & don’ts for keeping warm and fashionable in the cold air.

Sweaters. It’s an essential part of any winter

wardrobe. For me, a chunky, knit sweater will always be my fallback. Dark or muted tones (Navy is my go-to color) are always appropriate for ugly weather but it’s okay to be bold every now and then. Try mixing that chunky knit with fun graphic prints.

Monochromatics. has changed the way we

look at solids. Yes, red goes with red and blue goes with blue. It’s a simple idea that can be done so many ways. Who knew wearing one hue from head to toe could be so chic? Light to dark. Varying tints add depth (army green and olive). Textures. Wearing the same color in different textures adds interest. Colors. If you’re new to monochromatic, neutrals work great (gray, black, white). Accessories. True monochromatic means wearing accessories in the same color, but mixing a complimentary color (silver, gold, black) works just as well.

Outerwear. There is something about a tai-

lored coat that ups the ante of any outfit. It gives that extra oomph and instantly takes drab to fab. What really makes a great coat is the tailoring so pay attention to the details. I love belts, big buttons, or a great unexpected color. Think timeless and not trendy. A coat is an introduction to what is underneath.

Layering. When you live in an ever-changing

climate, layering is more than a way of dressing– it’s a lifestyle. One minute you’re cold, another minute the sun is out and it’s 80 degrees in January. I think one of best things about layering (aside from keeping warm) is the ability to transition pieces in your wardrobe season to season. Interested in adding some layers to your look, keep these tips in mind: Layer the lightest first. Start with the lightest fabric (t-shirt, blouse) and work your way up to the heaviest (cardigan, chunky sweater, jacket). Limit the layers to three. You don’t want to look like you’re wearing your whole closet. Structured pieces. Layers can sometimes make you look heavier than you really are. A great blazer that contours to the waist adds definition. Photos by Darnell Wilburn

Designs We Love from the 2014 Room & Board Collection By Andrea Janise | Lifestyle Editor | Photo Credit: Room & Board

Clean. Modern. Attractive. Those are the words that I feel best describe the home furnishings found in the 2014 Room & Board collection. With their classic take on contemporary furniture, many of their latest pieces use enchanting colors and bold, characteristic designs. And as an avid lover of Mad Men (AMC TV), I couldn’t help but imagine how chic many of these 60’s era pieces would work in Don Draper’s posh New York City condo or mixedin with existing decor to update any current style. I recently had the chance to chat with Julie Dewald, market manager for Room & Board Atlanta, who was thrilled to show off this year’s collection. “We’re excited to introduce our new assortment of modern American-made furniture and accessories,» Julie said. «From sofas and chairs to dining options and kids’ furniture, you’ll find pieces that are beautifully designed, affordable and long-lasting.” Check out these 10 must-have pieces from the 2014 Room & Board collection. Music Means

Every-

thing

I

’m more nervous off stage then on… I never used to be like that though. My left hand used to shake a little when in front of a lot of people. But once you’re put on the spot numerous times to perform in front of people, that nervous feeling eventually goes away. Now, I love performing in front of a live audience— it brings more character out of me. Music is a part of me now. It’s my language. I’m more fluent in it, than the english language. It keeps me sane. It’s how I express myself. Without it, I wouldn’t exist. I’m inspired every time I listen to guitarists like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Paul Gilbert, John Mayer, Jimi Hendrix, Jarius Mozee. Pulling bits and pieces from a bunch of different genres—eventually helped me develop a distinct sound. There are plenty of days when I have to drive straight to work right after classes, too tired to create music by the time I get some free time. But it’s apart of life—balancing school, work, music and finding time for some kind of social life. Ha. I’m trying to work on developing my time management skills. I’m even laying out my schedule for the week to help keep me balanced and handle all my responsibilities. No Complaints though. I’m living in Atlanta now and currently, I’m attending Southern Polytechnic University with a double major in Electrical and Computer Engineering. I’m also pursing a minor in Math and Music performance. I swear, moving to Atlanta has been the best move I’ve made. I’ve accomplished a lot going on two years living here. I do want to travel eventually but while I’m here I’m gonna keep networking and developing relationships with people in the music industry. My ultimate goal is to continue to master my sound, and inspire my fans. I just want to make a positive impact on the world. Show people, never limit yourself to one ability or style. http://www.youtube.com/user/rockinthamic12 | Photo by Darnell Wilburn

TASTEMAKER “While it is a fictional novel, everything in it definitely comes from personal experiences that I’ve been through or that I’ve witnessed for myself. Or be it from my family members and friends. It’s all real accounts of things that have taken place. People’s names, dates and certain aspects of the story has changed.” Always been a good writer: “I have been. I am a journalist by trade. I used to write for the Atlanta Daily Word, which is [Atlanta’s] oldest black owned newspaper. I’m a board member of the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists. I’ve been in communications for the majority of my career. Writing has always been a part of me. Creative writing kind of came later to me.”

ooking for the next great book to read and add to your library? Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Tracye D Bryant, the inspirational author of «This Twisted Life». Tracye can be described as a wife, mom, author, journalist, entrepreneur, public speaker, community advocate and a blessing upon the lives of the people she touches. What follows is some of the interview. Please tell us about your book: «It›s a fiction novel that focuses on how faith, friendship, family and love ultimately leads to death. The main character, Sherita Coleman, is a young African American woman who lives here in Atlanta. Raising her kids, going through a divorce, she has to live her life all over again. Finding that balance for herself as a single mom and as an individual. She ends up enthralled in the daily challenges of the people around her. Her girlfriends have issues, her kids have issues. Sherita ends up meeting two love interests and they have issues themselves. Her world is really kind of normal. The twisted comes in with the drama of everyone else around her. She’s caught in the middle trying to fix it.” Your inspiration for the book:

What makes a good book: “To me, people look for a good story line. Something that takes them away from the reality of their life. Most of the time if you start a book and you find you can’t get past chapter 2, that says a lot. A good book happens when something within the reader makes them feel like they could be one of those characters, or somehow relate to them.”

Recommendation

Advice for new authors: “Do it! Just do it! Go out there and do the research. Nobody expects you to be an expert in an hour. Understand what the publishing industry is all about. Understand the intricacies of the business side of it all. Go to seminars, meet with other authors talk to them. Always be prepared for whatever is next.” How do you do it all: “Prayer. Lots of prayer! Make sure you have a dedicated prayer line to God. As we know, nothing good for us comes easy. We’ve got to work hard for everything. I’m just like everybody else, I juggle back and forth. I’m always pleasantly surprised at how God answers my prayers. How he even responds to me at times. The Lord tells me constantly, I got this. You just do what I put you there to do and I’ll do the rest.”—Francine Salters

Favorite authors: Terry McMillan, Bebe Moore Campbell, Travis Hunter and Curtis Vaughn. Hardest part of writing a book: “Just being transparent. Being vulnerable and having the transparency so that the reader gets better insight into who you are. You really have to come in contact with yourself.” The message of the book: “Life goes on. We go through periods of loss in various different ways. A relationship with a good girlfriend could have ended, a divorce, a death, we all go through losses in our lives. We still have to recognize through it all, life goes on.” If Hollywood calls: “I can see Nia Long playing my main character, Sherita. I can even see Lorenz Tate playing her ex-husband because of the chemistry. Sanaa Lathan can play a part too.”

Tracye D Bryant Tracye’s second book, “Twist of Faith” is a continuation of “This Twisted Life” and will be available this spring. Meet Tracye Saturday, February 8th, from 2 PM to 4 PM, for a book signing and discussion at the Southwest Regional Library. 3665 Cascade Rd, SW, Atlanta, GA 30331, (404)699-6363. www.TracyeDBryant.com

Finances Americans Get Their Financial Houses in Order for 2014: According to a New Wells Fargo Survey Americans are focused on their credit score and debt; survey also reveals that generations approach borrowing differently As they look ahead to 2014, Americans are getting their financial houses in order by paying closer attention to their credit scores and managing their debt, according to the inaugural “How America Buys and Borrows” survey by Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE: WFC). The survey revealed that Americans are focused on managing their credit, with nearly 60 percent having checked their credit score or credit report within the past year. On average, more Americans are proud (40 percent) than concerned (22 percent) about their credit score. This focus on credit management is part of preparation for the future, as nearly 80 percent of respondents said they have purchases of $2,000 or more planned within the next two years. In the coming years, consumers anticipate financing purchases such as home improvements or a home purchase (41 percent), travel (32 percent) and automobiles (28 percent.) “77 percent of Americans feel their financial situation is moderate to good – which is great news as we move ahead to 2014,” said Gary Korotzer, executive vice president with Wells Fargo’s Consumer Credit Solutions Group. “It is important for consumers to put themselves in the driver’s seat when it comes to managing their

The survey also revealed: · 43 percent of Americans think things will get better in the next year. 44 percent think things will stay about the same. · Most believe housing values have bottomed out and expect values to stabilize or increase. · Boomers are more likely to feel the economy is weaker and Millennials are more

finances responsibly. An optimistic outlook for the future is an important key to financial success along with having clear goals and charting a course to get there.” The survey also uncovered generational differences in how consumers choose to manage or strengthen their financial situations. Boomers and Gen Xers are more likely to say they actively reduce their debt (42 and 35 percent, respectively,) while 35 percent of Millennials say they choose to focus on increasing their savings. The survey also revealed that consumers are engaging in healthy fiscal habits such as paying off their credit cards every month (39 percent,) saving for major purchases rather than relying on credit (38 percent) and sticking to a budget every month (32 percent.) “We want our customers to take charge of their finances by understanding their current situation and their options,” said Korotzer. “When used responsibly, credit is a resource that can help consumers reach their financial goals. And we believe Wells Fargo has an important role in providing tools and resources to help our customers succeed financially.”

positive about the future. · Millennials expect their current situation will improve (60 percent), yet one third are concerned about finding a stable job and paying off loans. · Saving for retirement is a leading concern for both Gen X and Boomers with 52 percent of Gen Xers and 53 percent of Boomers saying it’s their top concern.

· Three in 10 feel they’re saving more compared to a few years ago, or reducing debt. However, few (one in five) indicate they are financially prepared for an emergency. · When financing a purchase, the total cost of the item is the most important consideration, followed by the interest rates on credit cards or other loans.

· Nearly a third of American homeowners indicate that, with the exception of a mortgage, they are living debt free. · One in four respondents consider themselves “financially savvy,” and the same number feels that they are doing a good job keeping their financial house in order. · Few (13 percent) feel they have achieved their financial goals and most rate their understanding of financial management a “B” or a “C.” As consumers plan for 2014, Wells Fargo offers the following five tips: 1. Develop a realistic budget that includes your income, expenses, saving for life’s special moments and allowances for life’s unexpected moments. 2. Manage your cash flow and savings by tracking spending, reducing debt, saving for emergencies and avoiding overspending. 3. Build for the future by setting financial goals and living within your means. Create a financial plan to help you reach your goals and be prepared to adjust it if your life circumstances change. 4. Maintain strong credit and understand the real cost of borrowing. Know your credit score and check your credit report for accuracy annually. Before financing a big ticket purchase, understand the total cost of the loan over time. 5. Protect the money you have by avoiding becoming a victim of fraud or identity theft by safeguarding your personal information, reporting lost or stolen items such as checkbooks, debit cards or credit cards immediately and regularly reviewing your accounts to confirm all activity is legitimate.

After my first time vacationing at Sandals Emerald Bay Golf Resort & Spa for three fun and relaxing days, I’m already planning my next visit. Located on Great Exuma— the largest in a chain of 360 smaller islands—Sandals Resort’s secluded location is perfectly situated overlooking the beautiful blue Caribbean waters. Its seemingly untouched landscape and sugar white beaches draw in hundreds of visitors a year. From the ample amenities and personalized service, to the lavish accommodations, you can’t help but immediately relax, enjoy the surroundings and let the island vibes sink in. Sandals Resorts are known for their top-notch service, championship golf courses, pampering spa services and adult-friendly activities. With their all-inclusive amenities, you can eat and drink 24/7, so take full advantage of the daily room service, seven signature restaurants and cafés on the property including my favorite—La Parisienne, a French-themed restaurant serving herb crusted salmon, seared scallops and juicy lamb chops from their extensive menu. While attentive bartenders are available poolside, there is a fully stocked bar in each room to make sure the fun never ends.
