Shinra

Katsugi-okedo (Slung Drums) Power, rhythm, grace. A kind of spirituality! Sydney Morning Herald

The highly virtuosic katsugi-okedo (slung drum) players are free to roam in and around the audience, as well as perform on center stage. This tight, dynamic 5-minute number is full of earthy beats and catchy rhythms that culminates in fast tempos and fancy stick-work which virtually leaps off the skin of the taiko and into the audience, creating an energized and highly charged atmosphere that provides a captivating ambiance for your event. It can work well at any point – a vibrant opening, a reinvigorating pick-me-up, or a grand finale at the end the day. The slung drums can also be presented in combinations of four, five, six or seven players, giving that extra impact, particularly in larger venues.

Stunning, left the packed house on their feet calling for more. Nothing short of spectacular. Daily Telegraph

This number features the complete array of taiko instruments, with the addition of the bright and cheerful shinobue (bamboo flute). It has some serious and ritualistic elements at the beginning that then develops into a continuous upbeat feel building to an intense, big finish that will leave your audience breathless and clamouring for more! Odaiko Performance (Grand Drum) "The main stage work of Taikoz is of the highest creative order and their performance disciplines are second to none." Penny Campion

The odaiko or Grand Drum is as formidable as its name suggests. Even before a note is sounded, the 250kg odaiko has a presence all its own. Once the player begins beating upon the huge skin, sonorous tones emerge, as if from the ground, with the sound becoming all-enveloping. Steeped in Japanese spirituality, the odaiko will bring a unique sense of drama to your event. And the sight and sound of massed odaiko will only increase the excitement. Title: Pearl Ensemble Sizes

Onikenbai

Music and Dance "The dance, originating in the country's [Japan] Iwate prefecture, represents ''heroic'' demons that stomp to drive away bad spirits lurking in the earth." Sydney Morning Herald

Onikenbai is a beautiful, fascinating dance form that hails from Iwate Prefecture, Japan. The original masters are from Iwasaki Onikenbai Hozonkai, a performance organisation that dates back nearly 400 years! Permission is required for non-members to perform this dance, and Taikoz has their imprimatur to give public performances. The striking costumes, flamboyant horsehair head-dress, evocative masks and flashing swords lend an extremely dramatic flavour to any occasion. The Onikenbai dance and music is a very traditional Japanese art form and will be sure to excite (and intrigue) your audience, especially if you have visitors from Japan.

Glossary

Drum and Instrument Glossary Odaiko / Grand Drum The ‘o’ in odaiko literally means ‘big’ or ‘grand’ and is often featured as a solo instrument. Internationally acclaimed wood sculptor Marcus Tatton and drum maker Dan Magnus made Taikoz’s odaiko in 1996. It is constructed from a single trunk of Stringybark eucalyptus, measures over 1-meter in diameter and weighs 250kg.

Katsugi-okedo / Slung Drum Literally ‘shouldering drum’, the katsugi okedo is of lightweight construction, enabling a player to sling the taiko over the shoulder and play while moving. Katsugi okedo is capable of fast, intricate rhythms and, as such, is often used in up-tempo, festive music.

Glossary

Drum and Instrument Glossary Chūdaiko / Medium Drum Chūdaiko is a modern way of referring to a medium sized drum. The shell is carved from a single trunk of wood, the finest of which is keyaki: a hard, dense and very heavy wood that results in a sound with great carrying power. The calf-skin heads are attached to the shell by large tacks. Another name for chūdaiko is miyadaiko, which literally means ‘shrine drum’ as it is commonly found in Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan.

Hirado / Flat Drum Hira means ‘flat’, and do (pronounced ‘dough’) ‘body’, hence literally ‘flat-body drum’. The skin of the hiradō is tuned and held in place by tacks with the flat dimensions of the wooden shell producing a deep pitch, but without the resonance of the longer-bodied ōdaiko. It is sometimes played with a single bachi (drumstick) shaped like a baseball bat.

Glossary

Drum and Instrument Glossary Shimedaiko / High-pitch Drum This name comes from two words: shimeru, the verb ‘to tie’ or ‘fasten’ and taiko. The shimedaiko is tuned to a high pitch by means of rope, although bolts are now often used. This taiko is most commonly used in matsuri (festival) music and is a mainstay of most mixed-taiko ensembles. It is capable of fast, virtuosic rhythms.

Shinobue / Bamboo Flute Shinobue refers to a specific type of bamboo called shino and fue (bue) means flute. A wide range of bamboo, side-blown flutes can be used in combination with taiko, with shinobue the most common. It is used in the kabuki theatre and as accompaniment to folk song, but its high pitch and musical versatility lends itself very well to the modern taiko ensemble and is now a mainstay of most groups.
