SYM PUBLISHER’S LETTER

THE UNDERWORLD CHEERS —‘WOMEN OF COLOR IN FILM’ As you read along, picture yourself on the sidelines of a Basketball game. Let’s say New York Knicks verses Miami Heat for that coveted ring at Madison Square Garden. With your pom-poms in hand (your TV remote), repeat after me. When I shout POWERHOUSE! You yell the following: The Game, Scandal, AFFRM, Awkward and Eve. With outmost excitement, raise your pom-poms, wave them and shake them because, ladies and gentlemen, you have done a tremendous job supporting an alarming and historic breakthrough. This cheer might seem very odd, but for the millions who support the following five powerful women of color in film (or online in Issa Rae’s case) it’s the perfect cheer for a rebel with a cause. Issa Rae, Shonda Rhimes, Ava DuVernay, Mara Akil Brock and lastly, rapper Eve, are responsible for encouraging the underworld to dream and continue to inspire creative content. The gate is open and more than a handful of female filmmakers, such as Danielle Scott-Haughton who is based out of Great Britain, Emelyn Stuart who lives in New York, and I, are working tirelessly to leave our engrave mark on this precious gate. In previous issues, SYM featured both “Dear Jesus” and “12-Steps to Recovery”, both webseries executive produced by Danielle and Emelyn respectively. As I prepare this letter, it has been brought to my attention that “Dear Jesus” Seasons 1 and 2 will premiere on SKY-TV in London. In addition, Emelyn’s “12-Steps to Recovery” has also received a number of film festival nominations and awards. For those whom I didn’t get to mention, my hats off in support to you and your endeavors. Keep the dream ALIVE! In closing, I would like to thank the entire team and cast who constantly stand behind my first film project titled “Screw You Knot”. Duneshia Griffiths, Stacy Ann Brissett, Sabrina Clinton, Mark Daley, Elijah Knight, Shaunta Swissh, Anju Val and Carol Thomas. P.S. Be on the lookout for Reel Sisters Film Festival annual event in Brooklyn, contact Carolyn Butts at 212-865-2982.

SYM BUSINESSWOMAN

stacey bethel

WHAT IS STACEY BETHEL UP TO? I think the real question is, “What is Stacey Bethel not up to?” It is such a busy time for me and I literally have my hands in everything. For instance, my team and I recently moved into our new office space on Broadway and 51st in New York City. We have 3 new interns, 2 assistants, we are planning some signature events, we are launching a few projects later this year, we are getting ready to revamp our website and amp up our social media sites. We’ll be traveling the globe and as I type this, I am scheduled to cover a few shows over the course of the next few days during Mercedes Benz Fashion week. And on February 23rd I will be the recipient of a Young, Gifted and Black Award. This, my friend, is an exciting time.

But how did I arrive here? Well, through hard-work, dedication and a team of the most humble, intelligent, giving and innovative people that I have ever met. Recently Triple the Focus celebrated their 2 year Anniversary. In our celebration we launched Lights, Camera, Fashion, a fashion show that we are in the planning stages of producing during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week annually beginning September 2014.This, I believe, is vital to the Caribbean diaspora as our emerging designers cannot afford to showcase their collection at MBFW – not for lack of talent but resources. So we want to give them that opportunity. This, in addition to putting the Magazine together monthly and planning other events, has been keeping us quite busy. What is never absent from my life is a fair amount of traveling. Already I have accompanied Anguillan band, British Dependency on portions of their 1st US Tour. Our Creative Director, Victor E. Lewis, is the band’s manager and he has asked for my assistance. The band will be touring extensively this year and I am scheduled to be on the road with them. And that’s fine because I’ll get to add some interesting content that I believe our readers will love. I have always lived by the saying “To Whom Much is Given, Much is Required.” My schedule is brutal and unpredictable but this is the road I have to travel in order to achieve what I think is extremely important for the Caribbean community. It’s my heart and soul so much is required of me and I don’t mind one bit. www.triplethefocus.com @triplethefocus @stacey_bethel

STACEY ANN BRISSETT, AIESHA ALIA DUKES, ELIJAH KNIGHT, SABRINA CLINTON

SCREW YOU KNOT WEBSERIES -‘THE BOLT EFFECT’ BY DONNA LYNCH-HARRIS FOR SYM SYM They say that art often imitates life, so too does toying with words and associating them with basic carpentry tools. Tilsa Wright, the creator of ‘Screw You Knot – The Bolt Effect’ web series, explains that the enlightenment she experienced in order to create this project came from both social media and late night television, featuring comedian Martin Lawrence, on MTV2.

“Martin Lawrence’s sitcom is a timeless piece; you just never get tired of his punch lines and very “chameleon-esque” characters. My personal favorite is Shanaynay.” Screw You Knot is a far cry from being a Martin Lawrence sitcom, mostly by comparison. Martin has a full cast of African Americans who are seasoned actors; while Screw You Knot is comprised of Jamaicans, two Barbadians and one African American, all of whom are local New York actors. The writing style is also different; however, Wright attempts at hilarity are noticeable.

TILSA

SYM Many Jamaicans are known for their Spicy Jerk Chicken or Pork meals; in one episode, Wright has written of a “Jerk Cowfoot Dinner”. This is just unheard of among the culture. So here is the million dollar question...”Can Wright pull it off? Will she be able to deliver the plots and story lines that will draw the audience in as she attempts to bring her style of unique comedy to the masses?” TILSA “I asked myself this same question. To answer in the best way possible, I’m not sure that I am able to. However, I do notice

that the main character, Uso Screw, does have a comedic effect on people, so far.”

SYM Wow! Who in their grape-picking mind would want the name Uso, much less the last name Screw? TILSA “Great question! I believe for this reason I’m having a small challenge casting this role. You might ask, “Why film two episodes

without having Uso cast?” My answer is that, why not just film until the right Uso comes along? I have actors who are ready now, and eager to work. Director Anju Val, for example, is ready to build his portfolio with something that’s strangely different. Most importantly, I have sponsors, namely Just Because Hair Salon, who believes in the idea and is willing to continue supporting it.

SYM The premise of this potentially great web series is based around Uso Screw, a man who has a middle name to suit his profession. You may have guessed, “Hammer.” A carpenter by trade, yet a silly romantic at heart, Uso is not the typical alpha-male. TILSA “Uso, he just has some trouble with walking down the aisle. He is engaged to multiple women but something always causes

him to do the most hilarious and unforgiving things within his relationships. You see Martin is always a silly jellybean with Gina; he makes her laugh at his actions. She often pleads with him to take her more seriously.”

SYM What is the mission for this web series, as it enters into the global sea of online entertainment? TILSA “That’s easy; to build and expose. Not very many Jamaican females are filmmakers and if I’m not correct, they still have yet

to be recognized at the same level as say, Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Scandal, or Mara Akil Brock, the creator of Girlfriends. I may never be able to write like they can, but I sure as hell plan to leave my finger prints behind with Screw You Knot.”

SYM Just Because Hair Salon, located at 141 Carlton Avenue in Brooklyn, was the first local business to open its arms for Wright’s project. TILSA “The proprietor, Carol Thomas, is a fellow alumnus. We both attended Camperdown in Kingston, Jamaica. It was a pleasure

to cast her, as well as to include her for product placement. She has been instrumental in getting us to the location for filming our second episode at Pushkin Creaperie, located at 541 Myrtle Avenue.”

SYM Why are you building with local businesses?

“It’s a grassroots attempt to cross market. We are in the process of asking a number of restaurants and lounges to rotate some of our series episodes on their television monitors. This can certainly help give the cast and sponsors increased visibility. The three books that we also product placed; ‘Star Boy series’, ‘Runaway Comeback’ and ‘When Dancehall Was Nice in the 80’s: Dancehall Reggae Recall’.

TILSA

SYM What does product-placing books have to do with Comedy/Drama web series’? TILSA “It’s funny you’ve asked. My first book project, ‘Related Affairs’, was featured in a New York based web series titled ’12 Steps

to Recovery’. My second book project ‘Star Boy Cricket Wicket He Knows How to Stick It’, was featured in a London web series titled ‘Dear Jesus’. I received double-digit sales as a result within the UK. I am truly hoping to add more value to these books, as well as ‘Screw You Knot’.

SYM The Screw You Knot team is asking its viewers to support the careers of the actors, director and the sponsors.

stacey ann brissett STARS IN SCREW YOU KNOT AS KELLY PRICE WRIGHT

BY SUSAN PETERS

The very young 20 plus, who looks like 15, Stacy Ann Brissett hails from the island of Jamaica steps into character as Kelly Price Wright in Screw You Knot. Her father Carl Brissett, a known Cricketer, is proud that his offspring is making a name for herself. Having done a few projects, Stacy Ann is very together in her focus towards the ultimate prize, that is Hollywood and all it has to offer. SYM Tell us about your recent nomination. STACEY ANN I did this production called Not About Eve

written by award winning playwright Karl Obrian Williams. It was performed off-Broadway for 2 weeks and it received 3 nominations from the Audelco Awards , one of which was for Outstanding Ensemble Performance. The cast is made up 3 women of different generations. I felt honored, being that this was my 1st year working in the industry here in NY.

SYM What is it like working with Anju Val?

It’s quite an experience. I think Anju is a very talented director ; I value his opinion and I can bet on learning something new working with him.

STACEY ANN

SYM Why take on such a wildly different project titled Screw You Knot ?

Well when I first heard the title I was a little confused but after reading the first draft, I got it. I’m trying to challenge myself. I wouldn’t consider myself a comedic actress and I don’t think I’m any good at it but I got this chance and a challenge is always welcome.

YOUNG RAPPER SPAZZ ‘BAD B---N HIGH HEELS’ ROCKS THE STREETS OF BROOKLYN-SAY WORD!

SYM FEMALE

RAPPER

With a team that believes in Tiana Edwards, aka Spazz, she cannot go wrong. Debuting a hit banger single ‘Bad B—N High Heels’ and a slew of YouTube videos, Spazz most definitely spits hardcore. Her rhymes flow effortlessly, raw, with edge and what this game loves-realness. Born in Bed Stuyvesant, Spazz is now living in East New York. Spazz has both underground and mainstream media buzzing her name. Being only 21 years young, then again who’s counting? Spazz started writing at the age of 14 and from the look of things; she takes her skills seriously old school. Sym, after learning about her via FaceBook immediately contacted her manager Sherod Carter. SYM What makes you sexy, bad and good all wrapped up?

SPAZZ My unique and charismatic personality makes me the sexy and confident girl I am. The

fact I look appealing without being too revealing. My music expresses hood, but classy at the same time. That’s what makes me a Sexy Spitta. SYM Why did you choose the name Spazz? SPAZZ I’ve had the name Spazz since I was in my early teens, so instead of changing it, I just added the ‘Sexy Spitta’. I got Spazz from my crazy ways and just being different and over the top. SYM We heard you were on Funk Master Flex’s radio show. What was that experience like? SPAZZ That experience, like so many I’ve had was great and positive. It gave me confidence in myself, that I will win moving forward. SYM Who inspires your style? SPAZZ Being from Brooklyn has definitely influenced my style, but if I had to choose an impactful person, I would say Fabolous. It’s so funny, in retrospect, during 4th grade all I listened to was Rap Music. He was the one who first inspired me; you know his tide was extremely high back then. SYM Your street validation is real. How does this make you feel? SPAZZ My hard work has been paying off. Street validation is everything, especially coming from Brooklyn, the home of two major influencers, Notorious B.I.G and Jay-Z. This sure does give me wings. SYM If Jay-Z were to hand select you this moment, and wanted you to change an aspect from what you and the team built so far, would you? SPAZZ No one can change me. I can only grow and become a better person. There isn’t anything wrong with the person I am I can only continue to grow as me. SYM Putting aside your music image, who is the real Spazz in five words? SPAZZ Determined. Confident. Mature. Honest. Dangerous. SYM We see on social media, horrible photos of Lil Kim, alleged facial alterations, whether or not they were photo-shopped, etc. How do you feel about the pressure of plastic surgery to identify with being a star and maintaining a relevant competitive image? SPAZZ I haven’t had any pressures to change my physical appearance. If that challenge should arise in the future, I will deal with it, if and when it comes.

LADIES CRY NO MORE TARRUS RILEY

HAS THIS LOVE SITUATION UNDER CONTROL

BY TILSA WRIGHT AND ROXXI CHUNG

Using the phrase ‘A Measuring Stick’ comes across as provocative and indeed, this album will have female fans measuring their man’s love and affection, perhaps making it very easy to give him the nightly situation. As for the male fans, they will most certainly improve and sharpen their welding game and saying it like what track 13 a remix with Konshens suggest; pushing their metal ‘To The Limit’. Funny, I say this as track 4 is an 8-second skit about a woman knocking on her man’s door very early in the morning to get you know what. In her own words, she tells him “It’s me Blossom, I’ve come to get my welding done.” Track 5 ‘Burning Desire’ explains what they both got – Oh yeah! It’s 5 AM on February 4th, ten days before Valentines’ Day, the day Tarrus chose to release his 5th studio album distributed by Zojak World Wide; and Sym got an up close and personal interview with the Welder himself. SYM Many are saying Taurus and Dean Frazier have done it again with ‘Love Situation’ – What was the process like for composing this album? TARRUS Composing this album was all about fun and the experiences of life, some are personal and some are other people’s experience. One of the challenges with this album was the selection of tracks because there were so many to choose from. SYM I know you always sing about love and affection, so just about all of your female fans are entranced by your lyrics. Can you explain the inspiration behind the chosen title ‘Love Situation’? TARRUS Love can be both lovely and ugly, as you know there are just so many different sides and situations of love. SYM iTunes is the marketplace to buy music these days, so we at SYM would love for your album to sell 100,000 within the first month. Tell fans why they should support you in the same manner they supported projects like ‘The Voice”?

Yes, iTunes is where most records are sold, so it would be great to sell many records. Hence, the plan my team and I have is to tour ‘Love Situation’ before and after its release; taking the product to the fans. Fans should support us because I think we have a nice vibe and I’m sure there is at least one Love Situation on the album that includes everyone. It’s great music to last a lifetime.

TARRUS

SYM What sets Tarrus Riley apart from the rest in his business? TARRUS Tarrus Riley is unique, created in my own personal way. I don’t sound like anyone else and I do music that everyone can

relate to. If that is something that sets me apart from others, then so be it.

SYM For certain, your sound cannot be duplicated, not even if a YouTube 5-year-old toddler singing sensation tried their hand at it. With that said, what are 5 words you would use to describe your unique sound? TARRUS Grifted, blessed, passionate, dedicated and love. SYM If I were to turn on your phone, or iPod, right now, what five artists or songs would I see on your recent playlist? TARRUS It would be unfair to only name five. SYM So, a little birdie told me that you recently got inked. Where did you get your new tattoo and what is it of? TARRUS That’s personal to me SYM So what’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t writing, singing or touring? TARRUS When I’m not singing or writing, my favorite thing to do is sing and write. That’s all I do. SYM Why the motivation to go the Rock Steady route? TARRUS Rock Steady is one of my first loves, so I don’t think that the genre gets the highlight or respect that it deserves. It’s also

a way for me to give back to a genre that has paved the way for the success that myself and many other artists are enjoying. Plus, the younger generation needs to be educated about this sound that has given birth to various genres that they listen to daily.

SYM What does your tour schedule consist of? TARRUS I’m on a US tour right now, promoting the album, plus I will be doing another US tour during the summer. There is a Eu-

ropean tour next, and then I’m looking to go to Japan as well. Naturally, Africa and the Caribbean won’t be left out.

SYM What’s next for Tarrus? Any other future projects your fans should be on the lookout for? TARRUS Next

for me is to write and sing another song or my fans and to take my music worldwide, to build a stronger fan base. Based on what I’ve seen on social media, Tarrus has a variety of memorabilia for sale at each of his tour performances. Purchase copy of ‘Turn It Lose’ on Amazon @tarrusrileyja www.tarruriley.com

THE PITASTRO-SWEDISH REGGAE BAND

The love of Reggae music has grown globally over many years now; so it’s no surprise that The Pitastro from Sweden contacted Sym-Magazine for a feature. This group was formed in April of 2010, and released their first single titled ‘Big Boy’. Later that Summer The Pitastro performed at a few local gigs. The following year, they released their album titled ‘The Girl in Tights’. As their fan base began increasing, so did their YouTube video audience. Their hard work has led them towards many opportunities, namely with a Swedish competition in which they won an award in 2013. The Pitastro plans to release their second album in the summer of 2014. Now here is the million dollar question. Will we see them perform at Sum-Fest anytime soon? FOLLOW THE PITASTRO ON FACEBOOK FOR MORE DETAILS.
