SYM FROM OUR READERS

Dear SYM, When I read your first issue, you stated that “SYM (Symbolic) was created to provide a platform of positive expression and serve as a source of inspiration” I was so taken back. I felt that it enriches lives with more than the business of art ideas, but also expose other opportunities, resources, and insights of self-promotion, inspiration, to change the lives of those who dare. SYM platform has re-introduced to the world that everyone has choices and it is up to us to educate ourselves on what really works. Viewing the lives of others will inspire people to break that same old habits, eliminate those limitations and start creating. It helps to reinforce the meaning of the statement “I can’t do it, I will do It.” We are all unique with different needs and dreams. The impact of SYM will not only raise awareness but it has tap into the very essences of everyone’s, mind, body, and spirit. I commend SYM for providing the resources and recognition for positive action and facilitating intergenerational partnership. SYM realized that an achievement whether it is big or small not only “allows everyone to dream the impossible dream” it also helps them to be proactive in reaching them. Notable Writers! T I L S A C . W R I G H T P H O TO G R A P H Y: S U N N I B R O W N

Mahogany Ink, is comprised of three brilliant signature screenplay writers. The amazing trio, Shavon Brown-Robinson, Felicia Martin and Micheale Washington are Mahogany sisters inking their way to Hollywood. Using a formula that includes original story-telling, innovative thinking and by also being industry trendsetters. m Mahogany Ink is designed to support women, people of color and the underserved in mainstream Hollywood whose ideal goal is to cultivate future talent, cinema, television and digital media. m Mahogany Ink is a development and consulting firm that assists individuals who want to transform their story ideas into structured screenplays for television and film. Mahogany Ink is the fastgrowing go to source for talented producers and directors seeking creative solutions for all sized-budgets as well as new writers and actors seeking a platform to express their unique and original point of view.

Mahogany Ink’s managing director, Micheale Washington is a undiscovered heavy weight champion, heading to mainstream. Washington graduated from the University of Miami with a BS in Communication in 1998, double majoring in Motion Pictures and Africana studies, with a minor in Women’s Studies. She has over ten years of experience as a writing consultant and has served as President of the Black Filmmakers Association and Vice President of the Women in Film Association in Miami, Florida. SYM Let us go back to your internship days. Take us through your journey as an intern? MICHEALE Working as an intern is one of the most enriching experiences you can have as a college student. It gives you a firsthand look at what things are like in the real world. In film and television, things can often look glamorous and fun when in reality it’s lots of hard work and frustration. I learned that there are long hours, and lots of monotonous and tedious work to be done. It’s not all lights, camera, action and superstars. You really must have a passion for film to survive this industry.

Your screenplay “The Forgotten Father.” What is the premise? Why this storyline? How would you like Sym readers to support this project?

SYM

micheale MICHEALE “The Forgotten Father” was a passion project of mine that I had been trying to get produced for several years before I linked up with Haitian American Director, Perry Cassagnol. “The Forgotten Father” is a story of one man’s desire to reconnect with his son after serving eight years in prison for a felony drug conviction. I wanted to put out a movie that portrayed today’s black family and some of the real issues we face, but I wanted to offer an alternative to stereotypes we often see by making the male character a positive and realistic image of a black father. It’s being independently distributed. “The Forgotten Father” was the winner of the New York International Film Festival Best Drama Award and a featured entry in The Reggae Film Festival in Jamaica. SYM Micheale, in my book you are like Tina Fey, or even greater. What does it take for African Americans to get that coveted break in Hollywood? MICHEALE Good question. I’m still trying to figure that out as well. Calling me Tina Fey is remarkably flattering. Like most writers, I am obsessed with Tina and officially “STAN” for Aaron Sorkin and worship Shonda Rhimes. I don’t consider Mahogany Ink to have “broken in” to Hollywood.

It’s more like we found an unlocked backed door and are trying to lead as many people through it as possible. If you are a minority writer or actor and you don’t live in Hollywood, many will tell you that you have to move or that you have to cater to mainstream audiences. This is true in many cases. Los Angeles is where films get made. But, so is New York, Miami and Canada. Aspiring writers and actors need perseverance and diligence because honestly they are going to hear a lot of no’s and deal with a lot of unreturned phone calls and emails. But. while you are waiting to be discovered you have to continue to hone your craft. Read books and take

courses in your field to sharpen your skills. Attend industry networking events and increase your personal network at places like film festivals and seminars. You can’t sit idle in this industry or you will get left behind. You can’t be discovered if you are not out there. SYM Describe a day in the life of Micheale Washington? MICHEALE That’s a funny question. I never have a typical day. I am a talent acquisition consultant by trade and really it’s a hat I never take off. I look for talented professionals and place them with the right people and it’s something I do in all aspects of my life. I’m active in my community, sorority and alumni association and spend my spare time meeting people and making connections. As CEO of Mahogany Ink I spend lots of time reading screenplays, novels and watching pretty much everything there is on television. We scan the internet daily, have super subscriptions to Netflix and our on demand cable bill is embarrassingly high. SYM Why should clients choose Mahogany Ink?

Our clients are industry producers and directors looking for alternatives to typical Hollywood stories. Your typical Hollywood story would include a non-ethnic cast or an ethnic cast in a slapstick comedy or buddy action film. We enjoy these types of films just like the next person but there is an untapped market out there who want to see underrepresented persons like minorities, gays and foreign actors in original and provocative stories. We are always looking for talent to help us reach the goal of tapping into this market and changing what “Hollywood” looks like and will be accepting material from new writers and video vignettes from actors and comedians looking for a new or fresh start. MICHEALE

SYM What would be your ideal film project? And why?

I’m in love with period pieces and science fiction films. I love when a movie can marry history, science and entertainment. Some of my favorite mainstream writers including Scott Westerfeld, Dan Brown and Anne Rice excel at mixing high drama and thorough research. MICHEALE

SYM What is your ultimate goal in this business? Which male or female screenplay writer do you measure your work against? MICHEALE My ultimate goal is to provide an outlet for undiscovered talent that renews itself for years to come. Hopefully my story will inspire some other little black girl out there with dreams of making it big. I could never hope to attain the notoriety or esteem of a Shonda Rhimes, Tina Fey or Aaron Sorkin, but I hope to always write with the same fearless heart that they do.

One of New York’s talented writers, now living in sunshine Florida Shavon Brown-Robinson is a woman of many hats! Her demanding life of mother hood, wife, homemaker and CEO is currently working on some very exciting projects. SYM Where are you from in New York? How long have you been living in Florida? SHAVON I’m from all over really, I was born in the Bronx, but I’ve lived all over the Bronx and Manhattan as a small child. Later as a teen we moved to New Jersey. That’s where I grew up. SYM How was Mahogany Ink founded?

We actually met each other socially and in passing conversations revealed our shared love for movies and writing. We each have very different backgrounds and very different writing styles, but somehow it all works. SHAVON

SYM We are so accustom to California and New York being the ideal place to make a mark in the Film Industry. How has it been working and breaking the ceiling in Florida, which is considered a retirement state?

There is a lot of independent film in Miami and has been for a long time. South Florida has a slow but thriving community. These days there are a lot more celebrities buying homes here. Miami in particular is getting a lot of attention from popular television shows showcasing its beauty like “CSI Miami” and “Basketball Wives”. It’s not old folks and shuffleboard anymore. And as far as making a mark in the industry, you can write from everywhere these days. I’ve had meetings with people in Hollywood, Atlanta and New York without leaving my house. SHAVON

I read that you transitioned from an internet analyst, working for several companies, to becoming a freelance writer. What was it like working for them, and how different is it now on your own?

SYM

I always had the writing bug, but I actually started out in the entertainment industry. I studied dancing and acting for over 15 years and I also modeled before a car accident pretty much ended my dancing career. Later I entered the corporate world, and worked in various industries. Those places always felt like jobs, I wanted a career. When I had my last child, I decided that I didn’t want to wait for the right time to pursue writing full-time. I wanted to now to be the right time.

SHAVON

SYM How do you balance a family and business?

Very carefully! It was hard at first, when you go to work for someone, you have someone else to set deadlines and boundaries and limits. For me I schedule EVERYTHING, even writing time, so that neither business nor family gets neglected. However ever once in a while a script will lay unedited, while we escape to the beach or maybe I won’t sleep that night in order to meet a deadline. I’m like all working moms, just trying to get it all done. SHAVON

SYM Take us through the journey of one of your written screenplay. For instance what inspired you and how do you want the

audience to receive it? Anytime I write, it’s usually because it’s a story I’d like to see! Everything I see in the world around me is a piece of a story. I believe every person that you pass on the street has a secret, a past, a future, a secret history. And that’s where I find my inspiration, in real life, and hopefully my audience is able to see themselves in the characters I write about.

SHAVON

SYM What’s next for Shavon Brown-Robinson? SHAVON I have several projects in development including a major motion picture and a reality show. I’m also working on novel. I also plan to dedicate more time to the talent and consulting side of Mahogany Ink. Cultivating new talent is something we are all quite passionate about, but we also want to assist those people who have great story ideas but don’t have the knowledge or training to create a marketable industry ready product. We’re here to change all that. You’ll be seeing a lot of us really soon.

shavon

SYM Felicia Martin, let’s get the meaning as to why you are described as “Fee” and also the “Clever Wordsmith”?

Ha, didn’t know my nickname was even noteworthy, especially since it took 16 years for someone to finally shorten Felicia. I went through all of school, around the “Vicki’s”, “Neeka’s” and “Tashas”. So when Cassandra Render, dubbed me Fee that hot, summer day at Florida State’s Smith Hall, I knew then, “Fee” would be something else. She gave me the name, and said it fit. Took all these years to define what exactly Fee fit into. Fee is just Fee. Definitely the love her or leave her type of chick. She is sweet and tart, both are equally entertaining to watch. FELICIA

The “Clever Wordsmith” definitely comes from just being a girl who was bullied, trying to find ways to “fight” dudes. By no means whatsoever would I ever hit a man first, so I had to think of a way to quickly disarm them without throwing a punch. I quickly realized a few good ranks (snaps) can disarm a man quicker than NATO. Besides, being able to disarm a man through verbal warfare, I majored in English and truly love words. I love the way you can use them to convey meaning and how powerful speech is. I have a history of public speaking, hosting, etc. I get drunk with the attention, the command that can be achieved simply by how you speak, what you say, how you say it. My words are like a composer, guiding people to the meaning I want them to feel, the song I want them to hear. My words are in my control, no one can take them away from me. I like that. My mama said I started talking before walking. Since then, I have added great one-liners, philosophical statements, life mantras, and funny rhetoric to the 44,000 word arsenal which, I promise, I only use for good.

SYM Why was stand-up comedy so terrifying?

Honestly, the reason is, I don’t do well with negative feedback. The comedic audience does not give constructive criti cism, they BOO! Who the hell boo’s people? Remember “Late Night at the Apollo?” That’s a little too close for comfort for me. But I cannot say that I will never do it again. Stay tuned. FELICIA

SYM Now let’s jump forward to your debut novel, give us a reason why we should support it? FELICIA Because it is a damn good story, with several interesting storylines that will make you wish you could say, “I did something like that.” As I tell those who have read it, “Please remember it is a work of fiction, not a how to manual...tee hee. It’s actually going to be republished pretty soon with some juicy sneak peeks of the follow-up novel.

felicia

SYM Do you have plans to adapt your novel into a screenplay? If yes, how soon. FELICIA Oh yes. In fact, adapting “Some Things We Just Don’t Talk About” to a screenplay was the first project Mi cheale and I worked on. We have a ready-to-shoot screen play entitled “Some Things”. This project is ready for the right producer. Things are real simple with Mahogany Ink. If you have the sugar, we got the Kool-Aid. SYM Has Mahogany Ink mentored aspiring writers?

Well, Micheale has definitely inspired me to pursue writing for more than fun. She took my funny jokes, clever jabs, interesting stories, and endless imagination and turned it into captivating screenplays and pilots. Micheale always, always, asks the right questions that expand your creative mind wider than you could ever imagine. She has definitely taken me from a girl with good stories to one who puts fire to the paper when she scribes. FELICIA

SYM If not, does the company plan to?

Absolutely. It’s a part of our mission statement and business plan. FELICIA

SYM As a writer, how would you write a role for Steve Harvey and let’s say Tyler Perry, which the audience would not expect?

By taking the stereotypical characters that people expect them to play and backslapping the audience with an out-of-the-box spin. For instance, Tyler Perry has played a woman before, but has he played a true Homosexual man in search of love and acceptance from love partners as well as his family? Like the lead in many of E. Lynn Harris’ novels. Or try to imagine Steve Harvey as an autistic adult with the power to foresee relationship breakups. Ha, the laughs! I like to create characters that people think they know, but really don’t. Kinda like Fee, you think you know her, but you really don’t. FELICIA

SYM What inspires you to write? FELICIA A good story. Having a good story to tell and wanting the world to read it. My absolute favorite author is E.Lynn Harris, but the first author that inspired the story in me is Danielle Steele. I would get sooo lost in her characters and her stories, that I would be thinking of these people lives as if I knew them. I want my stories to be so good, that if you were reading them and someone were to interrupt you, your first words would be “where am I?” SYM Does writing liberates your soul, and how? FELICIA Liberate my soul? I wouldn’t say that, I’m pretty damn liberated…lol. I take things that have happened to me or my friends and embellished them to the maaxxxxxxxxxxx! Writing allows me to tell all the lies about people I would never say in real life. Writing allows my imagination to be liberated if anything. J U N - J U L

Meet the multi-talented band leader Hamid Cooper. Born Hamid Mottaghinejad in 1959 in Tehran, Iran, Hamid and his five siblings were raised in a home with loving parents who encouraged a love of music and the arts. Hamid discovered his love for Jazz at an early age by listening to his father’s collection of Afro-Cuban inspired Jazz records. As a teen he was taught to play the drums (Persian and Congas) by his father, an accomplished percussionist.

SYM ARTISTS-MUSICIAN

In his early twenties and feeling a need to “spread his wings,” Hamid moved to Denmark, Scandinavia. While in Denmark, he continued exploration of the arts, health and fitness; studying Kinesiology/Physical Therapy at Occupational University Copenhagen. Also a gifted artist, Hamid’s insightful paintings have been sold in galleries throughout Denmark. In 1998 Hamid relocated to the U.S. to pursue a life-long dream of playing in a live Jazz band. In addition to landing several engagements (playing percussion with renowned musicians) at high-profile events and festivals, he also taught percussion at the Music & Art World Academy. Soon after moving to the U.S., he settled in southern California, where he enjoys sharing his love for music and the arts. With compelling rhythms and impressive percussion duplicity, Hamid engages audiences with a spiritual depth to his performances. He was often called “Mr. Cooper” by fellow musicians because of his love of classic cinema and admiration for the legendary actor, Gary Cooper. In 2007 he formed Hamid Cooper’s Latin Jazz Band. Based in Southern California, the 5-7 member band is comprised of talented international musicians playing a range of instruments from wind to percussion. A typical performance includes: Leader and percussionist, Cooper on congas, etc.; jazzer Artis Ford on keyboards; Mike Montenegro on bass; Bill Mason on trumpet; Marco Perez on timbales; Bill James on saxophone & flute; and on occasion, an additional wind player. The band plays live dates in the Southern California region for listening and dancing. Instrumental numbers like a Cooper-arranged cover of Sonny Rollins’ jazz classic “St. Thomas,” Jorge Ben Jor’s familiar “Mas Que Nada,” and some more exotic Middle-Eastern influenced jazz-funk originals make up their repertoire. Some of their recent performances include: The Malibu Food & Wine Festival, LAPD’s Christmas Celebration hosted by Jay Leno, The Calabasas Fine Arts Festival, St. Patrick’s Day Celebration @ Muvico, The Malibu Cafe, and more. The band has released two CDs: Latin Jazz Dream from Persia (2010) and The Spirit Filled Latin Jazz (2011). Songs from the CDs are currently in rotation on various radio stations across the U.S. and internationally on Jazz Caribe Radio in Venezuela. www.hamidcooper.com Twitter: @hamidcooper

L E E TA L S H O T S P H O TO G R A P H Y

Lights! Camera! Action! Krystal Farris brings her characters to life effortlessly. She puts her best foot forward with each performance. This Georgia Peach is giving Big Apple actors fierce competition. Krystal is a recent recipient of an IFNY Monologue Slam Award, presented to her from actor, producer, and director Attika Torrance. Every four months Torrance hosts a monologue competition to find the most talented actors with a unique monologue. The award affords the honor of boasting the title, “Monologue Slam Champion.” Miss Farris studied at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, and participates in a number of their workshops on a regular basis. Inspite of her extremely busy schedule, Sym-Magazine caught up with Krystal during a day off. SYM We’re honored to have the opportunity to meet with you today Krystal. As Sym-Magazine continues to feature talent, we are thrilled to feature you in this issue. Now, tell us what inspired you to become an actress? KRYSTAL I have always wanted to be an actress. I know some people have a spark story or that special moment that hit them like a ton of bricks, but I think it’s just always been in my soul. When I was 5, my grandmother asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I told her an actress. She asked me the same question when I was 11 and I told her the same thing. She told me she thought it was just something children say, but not for me. I have always wanted to act! I think I came out of the womb that way. SYM “Plantanos and Collard Greens”, a phenomenal stage play, it’s been around for sometime now. Describe your character?

Yea, “Platanos and Collard Greens” has been running for eight years now and it’s still going strong. I play Malady, the only black girl in the play. She has a crush on the lead character but he likes the Dominican girl named Angelita. A lot of people think she is militant or jealous, but in reality she struggles with something mostly all dark skinned women have to face. People, especially black men sadly, are always saying things like you are pretty to be dark. There is no greater insult. Black is beautiful, dark is beautiful. It’s not that I am pretty inspite of being dark. I am attractive and I happen to have dark skin as well. It’s not a disease. It’s actually a gift. I love my skin color. KRYSTAL

SYM What was it like adjusting form GA to NYC? How long have you been in NYC?

It was really really different! Quite an adjustment! I come from a background full of hugs, love and graciousness. Southern Hospitality as they say. New York is an intense hustle. Everyone is in a rush to get somewhere or to do something. If you’re too polite or timid, you will get run over. You have to get your own. There is no time to drag your feet. There is no space and even the trees shooting out of the sidewalk are fighting for their right to exist. It’s exhausting, but they’re right, if you can survive here you can survive anywhere. New York is the ultimate battle of wills. KRYSTAL

SYM If you were cast for your ideal role, what would it be?

I want to be a black female superhero. I can kick butt and I wish growing up I had more superheroes that resembled me to look up to. Black women are sexy, hardcore bad asses that don’t take no mess. We are superheroes on a regular basis and we don’t get credit for it. It’s time our struggle paid off. KRYSTAL

SYM Do you plan to work behind the camera someday? Perhaps to produce, write or direct?

Absolutely! I wasn’t sure if it was something I was capable of at first, but once I started working in the business it became abundantly clear that if you want something you have to do it yourself. We have to create our own opportunities, not wait for them to happen. By writing and producing we become the designers of our own destiny. KRYSTAL

SYM I have been aware of your work for the past 2 years and your reputation is one of, and I quote “Krystal Farris is very professional and true to her craft.” Why is it very important to have good work ethic?

Wow! That’s awesome! You always want people to want to work with you again. It’s important in this business that people feel good around you and want to be in your presence because you are doing the right thing. They’ll remember that. When you walk on to a set you have to bring something more than just your talent. Believe me, there are plenty of talented people, but if they are not easy to work with or not professional, then the director will be “on to the next one”. There is always someone out there who will go the extra mile if you won’t show up on time, bright eyed, bushy tailed and excited about just breathing. These types of people make it easy to go to work everyday. You want to keep them around. I strive to be one of those people. KRYSTAL

SYM We saw your appearance in Tony Clomax’s hit web series “12-Steps to Recovery”. What’s it like working with him? KRYSTAL Tony is an awesome writer, director and person. mark daley dj facemoni

Mark Daley (aka DJ FaceMoni) intends to become a mogul in the Reggae Music Fraternity. DJ FaceMoni, who is sometimes called “Ladies Honey,” grew up in Waterhouse Kingston, Jamaica where he attended Camperdown High. He took pride in representing both his school and community as the captain of the Colts, a minor league football team. Daley believes that his leadership qualities come from being a responsible and driven individual. After graduating from Camperdown High, Daley furthered his studies at Stony Hill H.E.A.R.T Academy. He successfully completed, and majored in, Sales-Accounting, and Business Administration. His love for music became evident while attending school over the years, when he showed an earnest willingness to perform at several social events to raise funds for the school. Daley’s charisma and musical lyrics earned him instant popularity among female fans; hence the moniker “Ladies Honey.” Daley’s passion brought him to the doors of King Jammy’s Recording Studios, where he aligned himself with producers John John, Zumjay and Ward 21. It was there “DJ FaceMoni” honed his craft and learned the business of making music. After years under their tutelage, DJ FaceMoni left to develop his brand under his own label and, along with several colleagues, produced his first professional singles, Something Something – a catchy dancehall tune with huge potential to crossover into mainstream – and Sexy Darling, a collaboration with fashion mogul Niki Chin.

MAKING HIS MARK AND BRANDING HIS TALENT

DJ Facemoni also made a cameo appearance in the film A Dance for Grace, a dance drama that allowed him to grace the runways as a male model. When not in the studio, he can be found on the road as a top disc jockey for Star Vibes International. And he is currently working on a project (one of several) to live stream his own show for Rocksteady.com. With so much going on, it’s even more impressive that this up-and-coming talent takes time out to “give back,” something his mother impelled him to make time for. “My mom instilled in me, from an early age, that it’s everyone’s responsibility to help out where you can,” he told SYM. “I carry that creed with me everywhere I go.” To that end, Daley’s skills benefit several charities such as Camperdown Past Students Association-New York Chapter. And he challenges others to rise to the occasion. “My advice to younger, fresher talent is to give more…because when you give more, you receive your true blessings.” With the path to greatness that he’s on, Mark Daley (aka DJ FaceMoni) knows all about that. You can catch this great artist at: www.myspace.com/facemoni1 or on Facebook @ http://www.facebook.com/DJ-FaceMoni For bookings, contact Star Vibes International @ 347.854.7024

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Introducing sym caribbean! Welcome to Sym-Caribbean! Sharing the love, vibrancies, and warmth of Caribbean culture. Life is about taking risks. Let’s face it you won’t ever realize your dreams unless you take that leap of faith. Against the advice of a few colleagues, who didn’t think it made sense for me to grace the first cover of SYM-Caribbean, I chose to do so any way. SYM is a brand I created a year ago, so being on the cover is an ‘Oprah moment’ for me on the one hand. While on the other, it’s a milestone because against all odds SYM is still standing and we’re now adding SYM-Caribbean to the family. It’s a celebratory and extremely festive period in the Caribbean this year. During August, two prominent islands will celebrate 50 years of independence from the British Empire. So, it’s only fitting that the launch of SYM-Caribbean be a part of this historic milestone. SYM-Caribbean will feature an array of Caribbean lifestyle and cultural items of interest and concern. It will feature sports, carnival, fashion, affairs of the heart, and many more ingredients that the Caribbean melting pot is comprised of.

“The reason why I see Jamie Foxx as my idol is because we are both two black handsome young men, but I think I am a lot like Jamie because I can put a smile on your face or even laughter in your life, no matter how sad or bad the situation is.” A unique talk show brand that has certainly taken the Jamaican Canadian community by storm! Chatty Chatty Wednesdays a three hour online interactive talk show with co-host Linky Links and Nicki, is on everyone’s lips from North America to Linky Links’ homeland of Jamaica. Hailing from the sunshine city of Portmore St. Catherine on Jamaica’s south coast, Linky Links is destined for greater prospects. In high school Linky impressed his peers with his engaging brand of comedic stand up performances during break periods. Needless to say he was very popular! With only seven months since the show officially launched, it’s fan base is not only great in numbers, it has also proven to be a very loyal following. This has gained the attention of notable Dancehall promoters, local business owners, and high profile event planners. All of whom recognize the value of aligning themselves with a winning brand. Congratulations are in order. Your show is well received by the Reggae and Dancehall community at large. Now, what inspired the name Chatty Chatty? Why do you think the show is so popular?

SYM

The name Chatty Chatty was inspired by back home (Jamaica) where we always have people gossiping or as we would say in Jamaica chat too much. So, we tried to have fun with the name and go global with it. I feel the show is so popular because it is Toronto’s first Interactive internet talk show where people can actually participate. Plus it’s totally different and fun. People can relate to it. Meaning we deal with real topics and real life situations for real people. LINKY

SYM How were you cast for the co-host role? LINKY Slash sound system owner Ryan Reader aka Giggz, had a party that I hosted.

He thought I was very funny and at the same time could relate to people and get my point across with everyone having a smile on their faces. He then approached me at the end of the party and informed of his idea for the show, and explained that he felt I would be a perfect fit for the part.

SYM What impact has this experience had on your career?

It has been positive so far. It has given me many more opportunities to show my real talent by entertaining and also making a lot more people laugh. Chatty Chatty Wednesdays has broken down walls for the world to see me and for that I am very grateful. LINKY

A few years ago you mentioned to me that Academy award winning actor/comedian Jamie Foxx is your idol. And that stand-up comedy is your true passion. How soon do you see yourself venturing into that field as a professional?

SYM

LINKY Honestly, I think I have been doing standup comedy all my life now…. (laughs) just not on a professional level.

As you know I have always been that person to entertain a crowd and make them laugh from a tender age. The reason why I see Jamie Foxx as my idol is because we are both two black handsome young men… (chuckles and flashes a wide grin), but I think I am a lot like Jamie because I can put a smile on your face or even laughter in your life, no matter how sad or bad the situation is. It is very rare we find a young man like yourself who is just starting a media career and giving back to his community. Beyond that, to actually begin this effort in the country of your birth, Jamaica. I sincerely commend you. Now, tell our readers about your upcoming event in Jamaica which is geared towards helping young children.

SYM

LINKY Well, this event that I’m hosting is to help the kids and to remind people, especially the teenagers that there is still love and hope and most importantly, that life has much more to offer. In the neighborhood (Waterford) where I was born and raised I have seen a lot of unnecessary violence. So, a couple of my friends and I are just trying to shed some light on the community by bringing back the love. SYM What advice would you give to up and coming talent, who aspire to walk in your footsteps? LINKY For up and coming talent, my best advice is to keep Father God in your life. You have to believe in the Creator because through Him all things are possible. Stay true to yourself, true to your dreams and if this is what you want to do, you can do it. “Impossible is nothing”

dutty bookman

Following university studies in the USA, a young idealist returns to Jamaica with revolution on his mind. For the next four years, he focuses on his mission to mobilize a critical mass of people - youth in particular - in order to catalyze social progress. As he manages his popular social website, hosts a nationally syndicated radio talk show and launches a non-profit organization that takes Kingston by storm, he also discovers his own unique outlook and insight that help to shape his spiritual growth. This revealing memoir sets an example for other young doers and agitators who find their altruistic contributions stalled by a pressing need to pay attention to personal insufficiencies. As a concerned human being who tries to do for others, it is important to remain true to oneself or otherwise risk being of no use to the revolution at all.

Dutty Bookman is a self-declared revolutionary. Born Gavin Hutchinson in Jamaica, the 29-year-old grew up exhibiting an academic mind with a particular propensity for the sciences. At 10-years-old, he won a scholarship to attend Campion College, one of the island’s most prestigious high schools, later on attending the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida to study Aerospace Engineering. It was during his time at ERAU that he began to experience a shift in interest. No longer motivated to design aircrafts or spacecrafts, he turned his attention to social issues. He switched degree programs after roughly 3 years of study and immersed himself in the humanities, finally graduating after 6 years with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, including concentrations in Communication, International Relations and Information Technology. Despite acquiring permanent residency status in the United States, Dutty was led by a growing concern for the development of Jamaica to return there in 2006. His remarkable journey over the next 4 years saw him become a supervisor for a local casino run by one of Jamaica’s “21 Families” before he went on to produce and host a national radio talk show called Reasoning. He also began working for the Bob Marley Foundation, planning and executing the Africa Unite Youth Symposium 2008. A few months later, he hurdled the bureaucratic red tape of the Jamaican government in order to go to Toronto, Canada, where he helped plan and execute the inaugural Ignite The Americas youth arts forum, held under the auspices of the Organization of American States. By 2010, he was the Communications Coordinator for the Bob Marley Group of Companies (Jamaica), which included the Bob Marley Museum as well as Tuff Gong International, the record company founded by the Reggae icon himself. Also in 2010, he co-founded Manifesto|Jamaica, a non-profit organization established to educate, expose and empower young people through arts and culture programming. Dutty Bookman’s name is derived from the 18th century Jamaican slave who went to Haiti and instigated the Haitian Revolution. Tried & True: Revelations of a Rebellious Youth is a personal memoir that details his post-university efforts to mobilize the Jamaican youth as well as his personal growth along the way. The book includes some of his own journal entries over the four year period from 2006 to 2010.

Her Journey from aN island to SYM,

Tilsa Wright

a symbolic path‌

TELLS HER STORY

Jamaican born, Tilsa Wright has her eyes set on achieving great success with the advent of her latest projects. Sym-Magazine, an online publication that has generated great buzz among many in the entertainment and entrepreneurial arenas, and Related Affairs, a novel which explores love, relationships and addresses the controversial homophobia issue as well. Tilsa grew up in Harbour View, a very small community near Norman Manley International Airport. Her father, a hardworking self made business man, worked a night job at the cinema while during the day distributing his home made juices to a number of local businesses. “Throughout the past 34 years, the coconut water enjoyed by many cinema patrons has been made by my father. I never actually saw myself following his footsteps, in as much as starting my own business, much less actually writing a novel.”

TILSA

Wright an only child, admires her father, who raised her without a mother in her life. He always made sure she had the best until it was time for her to fly the nest. Leaving her father behind, Wright migrated to Brooklyn, New York. She lived with her now deceased grandmother. TILSA “After graduating Camperdown High in 1995, I came to live in Brooklyn permanently. Prior to this, I would visit each summer during the holiday breaks from school. The idea of living in America always sounded grand, until I realized just how much I was missing friends and family.”

Living in the islands is more laid back, not so much hussle and bussle. It took Wright a couple years to adjust as she continued to travel quite routinely between Jamaica and New York. TILSA

“During those years, I had a heartfelt yearning to just remain in Jamaica, but eventually I had to settle here.”

Fast forwarding to her entrepreneurial accomplishments, Wright credits a number of people for helping her to realize her purpose and aspirations. Bishop Sylveeta Hamilton Gonzales tops her list. TILSA “Bishop Gonzales is an icon in the Caribbean Community. A very hardworking, committed Woman of Great Esteem! Her mission is to empower and encourage others, starting with her students at M.A.C.A.D.E.M.Y. Who I consider strongly to be tomorrow’s leaders.”

Conflicted and losing focus, Wright was encouraged to change both her outlook and environment. She began to read more and volunteered for a number of organizations engaged in positive business and community driven efforts. These actions led her to pen Related Affairs, her first novel, published in November 2010. TILSA “I recall writing

the outline for Related Affairs, and thought what would friends and family think? Sure, a few asked if it was my coming out story!”

Surprisingly, a number of Jamaicans have read this controversial novel which has it’s premise based in the subject of homosexuality which a large percentage of the Jamaican population is opposed to. Despite, that many are anxiously awaiting a second installment. Wright’s intent was to write her first major project employing unexpected twists and with the courage to address homosexuality. She recounts an incident that she witnessed in her pre-teen years. TILSA “It was a day after school. I traveled to Parade in downtown Kingston to take a second bus home. These were my prep school years. I was shocked to see a mob harassing and chasing a naked man through the park. He was bloody, scared, and feared for his life.”

“Kill di batty boy, dem fi dead!” the crowd shouted while throwing whatever objects they could find. This man was apparently caught having sex with another man in the park’s bathroom. Back in the 80’s and 90’s this hate mob practice was very prevalent, sending a clear message to the Jamaican Gay Community.

TILSA “I don’t see a world that will ever embrace, accept or even tolerate homosexuality. What I’m personally against, however is the discrimination and the physical violent attacks. They are not aliens nor are they deviants. It’s their choice of lifestyle. Who am I to judge? Many want to even use the Bible as a weapon of condemnation and a reason to deny their basic human rights.”

“Homosexuality is not of God!” Christians and even Agnostics are quick to point out. Related Affairs is controversial. It explores love, relationships and has it’s share of drama. Screenplay writer Sabah Muhammad is presently writing an adaptation. Wright intends to produce Related Affairs on the silver screen. However, in the meantime, Related Affairs has not been domant. It has sponsored two New York based Gay events, The Rainbow Book Fair and The Harlem Pride Celebration in 2011.

The creation of Sym-Magazine After freelancing with publicist Stephanie Frances-Mack, and publisher James Lisbon, Wright felt in July 2011, that it was time to launch another project. One that would embody her passion and support of grass roots of actors, entertainers and start up business owners who she realizes are working hard for that big break. TILSA “Today I am comfortable laughing at the original name I had chosen for the magazine TilsaWrightMagazine, which is a

far cry from SYM.” The name has evoked a positve reaction from it’s readers because of the unique and curious nature of this acronym. SYM, symbolic with a difference. It’s directive to be like the American Idol TV show where talent is discovered. Also, to serve as a resource for talent scouts, casting agents and film producers to name a few. The long term potential for Sym-Magazine is more than it evolving into a great publication. Sym will primarily feature less prominent yet very aspiring and promising personalities on it’s covers. These covers will be promoted on the Reuters Sign in the heart of NYC’s Times Square! TILSA “Getting your face on Broadway couldn’t be easier. I came up with this idea while researching the best press release distribution services to use. My email inbox is constantly filled with requests to be on the cover for this reason.”

Wright is appreciative of the responses that the first three issues have garnered. She plans to feature national and international editorial content since Sym is an online publication. This provides Sym a greater distribution reach with viral marketing as the today’s leading trend. TILSA “Our third issue featured artist and author Danny Simmons, business mogul Russell and Joseph Simmons’ older brother. He was very down to earth and extremely supportive of our work. I truly encourage people to support their foundation. This is where their heart lies, service to the community and giving back.” (www.rushphilanthropic.org)

As a result of this third issue, Sym-Magazine’s online presence grew tremendously, gaining attention from numerous “A“ list celebrities.

Sym-Magazine’S CONTRIBUTION TO FILM Not only will Wright feature up and coming actors, independent films and entertainers in the United States, but from her native Jamaica as well. TILSA “I am currently reviewing the work of two major organizations. The Reggae Film Festival and Film Jamaica. Yes, a great deal of films were shot in Jamaica, however homemade projects are just not getting enough exposure or distribution. This has spawned the creation of SYM-Caribbean, a spin-off of SYM and a vehicle dedicated to bringing vital information from the Caribbean to the forefront of media attention.”

On a more personal note, Wright expresses that she is single and is no way near looking to date or ‘jump the broom’. TILSA

“I am way too consumed with my work to give any thought to getting a man.”

For Wright, Sym-Magazine is an inspiration and an aspiration for her personal accomplishments as well as those of the same of other rising stars! And she’s not done yet! Wright has just written her second novel (released May 2012) entitled Star Boy, part one of a trilogy. She confesses Star Boy is 1% her story and 99% fiction. You’ll have to read it to draw your own conclusions…stay tuned! TILSA “I’d like to thank Bishop Sylveeta Hamilton Gonzales, Madame Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller and ‘The Queen of Talk Shows’, Oprah for being my muses for creativity, strength and inspiration!”
