Skate park wanted At last count nearly 1000 people have signed a petition requesting the City of Wanneroo to build a skate park in Yanchep after consultation with local community and residents. The group, lead by local resident, Romano Gomes, has about 1000 followers on a Yanchep Skate Park Facebook page. Mr Gomes told the Sun City News that there is an urgent need for a decent size family skate park facility in Yanchep. “A Fremantle Esplanade Youth Plaza style park would be ideally suited at Fisherman’s Hollow making it a place where all the family could utilise the facilities such as an all age skate area, family picnic areas, with a fantastic family friendly atmosphere.” Petitions are available to sign at various local outlets and shops,

it will be presented at the next City of Wanneroo council meeting in early March. The closest skate park to Yanchep is located in Charnwood Park at Two Rocks. This skate area is very small and limited to younger children. Mr Gomes would like to see a large skate that accommodates all ages from toddlers to adults and all skill levels. He said the Fremantle Esplanade Youth Plaza was one of the best in Western Australia and he hoped the City of Wanneroo would work with the local community to provide this facility in the near future. So trying to be positive, what can we do as a community?

Over the past months, my office has received an evergrowing amount of concerns from the local community about ‘neighbours from hell’. Three common factors appear in many of the complaints - drugs, lack of police involvement and lack of local government support. Now, before the police start blasting the Sun City News for not talking with them, may I say these letters, emails, etc, that I have provide some concerning claims; and until they are fully investigated I am holding back on releasing our ‘Neighbours from Hell’ article. A very obvious observation is the disconnection between the wider community with various resident groups, police and local council. This no doubt feeds the issues and problems

 Take care of our community. If everyone took a moment while they were out walking to pick up a few pieces of garbage, could you imagine how clean our neighbourhoods would be? Taking care of our community by cleaning up garbage, removing graffiti and more helps to instill a sense of pride in the community for everyone.  Volunteer, somehow, anyhow, just try to volunteer for something in our community. Manpower hours are the single most important resource for bettering our communities, whether it’s by helping organising events, building a community playground or becoming an active member of our community.  Invest in your community - It’s not just a trend, spending your dollars locally is something that used to be done on a regular basis by my grandparents generation.

Start looking around now at the little independent shops and make a conscious decision to frequent them.  Get to know your neighbours Getting to know the people in your street is something we all should attempt to do. Not only does it make for a happier neighbourhood, but it also makes for a safer one. So that when trouble occurs in your street, the local residents can work together to resolve an issue. Teaching the next generation to take care of others makes for a better community in the present and for the future. Talking about is easy, but I find most people are prepared to complain, but not help with the solution. Until that thinking changes, we will have more neighbours from hell and individuals who think they ‘look good’ in the community but really they are tearing it apart.

I know of one incident where the Sun City News published community concerns about local bullying and one person took particular offence and their actions have continued to harm the wider community for 12 months and more. Support is needed from local police, our council services and our politicians working with the local community to ensure a better community for everyone. And, when a ‘neighbour from hell’ moves in the street is capable of resolving the problem quickly, rather than the current buck passing system. Connected communities all working together is the solution to not becoming the ‘suburb from hell’. I can remember not that long ago, our community called a ‘local meeting’ filling the Phil Renkin Centre one afternoon, and resolved community concerns with everyone being involved. Let’s start to reconnect our community.

Durrs track still being used Since the City of Wanneroo closed the access road and made it illegal to use Durrs Track off the corner of Damepattie Drive and Sovereign Drive, usage has only been minimally reduced. Vehicles coming from Wilbinga to Two Rocks are creating new accessways onto Damepattie

Drive wherever they can. As fast as a new access is created, City of Wanneroo are blocking it off with large limestone rocks. The City of Wanneroo said: “The City is monitoring ‘illegal access’ points to Dewars track and has arranged for large

New exit tracks

New tracks to exit the closed Durrs Track entrance appear regularly causing environmental damage to the local dunes, flora and fauna. As one 4WDer told the Sun City News: “What’s the problem, it’s going to be all bulldozed soon for residential development, no one cares about the land.” Local residents are concerned about how much damage is going to occur along the north-east side of Damepattie Drive over the next five or ten years before any development occurs in this area. The owners of the land, Capricorn Village Joint Venture have remained silent since the City of Wanneroo decision to close the access.

boulders to be placed on the back of the road reserve verge area to prevent illegal access in the interim. “As part of the management of the closure, the City continues to monitor the area using regular ranger patrols. The rangers share safety information with beach users to educate them

and discourage incorrect use of the track. “The City is only able to monitor areas within its boundaries and has no authority over illegal access to the north of the track. “The City will continue to block off any illegal access points in Damepattie Drive but cannot

intervene over any illegal access to the north which is on land outside of the City’s authority.” Negotiations continue with the Department of Parks and Wildlife to install more signage on the Wilbinga land advising the track is closed.

Your letters and emails Outpost

I’ve heard Australia Post want to introduce an even more effective postal service without impacting on their current delivery standards. Apparently, customers will be encouraged to simply pop their mail into a bottle and throw it into the ocean nearest their capital city. Country folk can opt to bury their bottle under a bush anywhere they please. Is this true? And If so, how much will the bottles cost? Dave Nicholson, Yanchep.

Congratulations

The ‘New Look’ is definitely that. Love the brightness of colour which immediately catches one’s eye. Good luck, and may the Sun City News remain a true local.

My husband and I are leaving Yanchep for a new adventure in the southern regions and so we would like to farewell good friends and acquaintances whom we have had the pleasure of spending the last ten and half years with. I think especially of everyone walking through the Yanchep Community Centre doors and all the volunteers with whom I spent so many hours.

We wish everyone continued good health and happiness in this area and trust that Yanchep/ Two Rocks will continue to prosper whilst trying to maintain some of its original character. Lynnette Nabholz.

School action needed now! At last Tuesday night’s City of Wanneroo Annual Electors Meeting, spokesperson for the Yanchep Education Future group, Kim Garbutt present four items for consideration.

Kim said on behalf of the group, Yanchep Education Future of which there are over 500 residents, we request that the City of Wanneroo advocate in support of Yanchep and surrounding families and assist us in providing the following information to the general community, media and education department:  What is the current total number of children aged 0 – 18 as at December 2015, within the Yanchep District High School catchment area?  What is the number of new houses already approved by the City of Wanneroo to commence and be completed by the end of 2016 and 2017 within the Yanchep District High School catchment area?  What is the total number of untitled blocks yet to be approved within the Yanchep District High School catchment area up until 2022?  What is the maximum potential number of new houses/families the City of Wanneroo are planning for within the Yanchep District High School catchment area and the Education Department need it for the start of 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022?  Please provide the community with any developments that may increase the total number of

households within the Yanchep District High School catchment area during the above years? Ms Garbutt also asked: “The City of Wanneroo cease and stop approving any or all new housing permits, house block releases and building development projects that will increase the population within the Yanchep District High School catchment area until 2022 when the community will have Year 12 facilities for our students. “The City of Wanneroo to urgently advocate for the major upgrade and expansion of the Yanchep District High School. Mayor Tracey Roberts said Yanchep mother of three, Kim Garbutt, spoke passionately at the Electors’ AGM and the City could provide the information.

“Kim Garbutt shared the concerns of many parents who have clearly stated that Years 11 and 12 should be offered as soon as possible to allow students a local education beyond Year 10, in order for children to have opportunities and choices to support their future career aspirations,” Mayor Roberts said.

Some people have quoted 2020 and 2024 before Year 11 and 12 classes will be available at the new school.

“The commitment shown by Ms Garbutt and YEF towards education is very clear and the City will consider Ms Garbutt’s motion on a potential advocacy partnership at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 1 March.”

Other concerns relate to the size of the new school and its capability to cope with the everfast-growing population in the Yanchep District High School catchment area.

The major issue relates to the lack of Year 11 and 12 options for Yanchep District High School; and the uncertainty of when these classes will be available at the new school to be built in Jindowie.

Currently, Year 11 and 12 students from Yanchep and Two Rocks have to take two buses to access schools in other suburbs in order to continue their secondary education.

This catchment area includes Two Rocks, Yanchep, Allara and Eglington. Local State Member, John Quigley has been campaigning for over two years about the poor treatment the Yanchep

region has been getting from the State Government. Ms Garbutt said many parents had clearly stated that Years 11 and 12 should be offered as soon as possible to allow local education beyond Year 10. Currently Yanchep District High School has 22 transportable classrooms and has an agreement with the City of Wanneroo to use the adjoining Oldham Reserve during class breaks as recreational areas for students. It wasn’t that long ago, the Minister for Education, Peter Collier, described YDHS as the state’s worst. Senseless vandalism

Recently someone has maliciously and intentionally destroyed a tree in Lookout Drive, Yanchep in the Capricorn Yanchep Estate. They drilled a hole in the tree trunk and injected a poison which has killed the tree.

While developers are often maligned generally for the changes that occur to the original landform of an area to create new residential estates, they do try to preserve special large trees where possible. Equally developers spend thousands of dollars beautifying new estates with roadside and verge planting of shrubs, bushes and trees. These not only help make the new estates look great, but become an important identification and asset for the region.

Spokesperson for Capricorn Yanchep, Jarrod Rendell, said: “We are disappointed and very angry to discover this week that a resident has decided to maliciously and intentionally destroy the benefits that the entire community would gain from. “We will replace the tree and we ask that the Capricorn Yanchep community join us in ensuring that these assets are protected from selfish actions of an individual resident, so that Capricorn remains a unique place to live, grow and prosper.”

School trees seem safe

In the last issue of the Sun City News, community concerns about a piece of pristine bushland and a row of trees at the new Jindowie high school site was highlighted. Since a petition was started, community awareness raised and members of the Jindowie Residents Group have been seeking confirmation from the Department of Education that these trees would be retained. Jindowie Residents Group president, Helen Berry, told the Sun City News that verbal assurance had been received that the trees will be retained. Ms Berry said: “We are awaiting the return of a Department of Education planning engineer office to confirm 100 per cent that the trees will be retained.” Earthworks are scheduled to start in March and a few residents are concerned about the possibilities of snakes and other wildlife coming into the estate during this phase of construction The Jindowie Residents Group Facebook page is hoping to provide a list of snake catchers and animal rescuers who can assist with the relocating of wildlife.

Andre a passionate photographer

From a young age Andre had an interest in photography. His initial interest in photography came from capturing landscapes, flora and fauna. He then turned to videography and worked part time as an event videographer doing weddings and theatre productions. Andre’s passion for photography though, brought him back to his first interest,

this time into the digital world of photography. Using top quality Nikon equipment he captures special moments through his lens. Even though real estate photography and portfolio and family portraits in his studio is Andre’s ‘bread and butter’ work, Andre has a keen interest in nature and wildlife so likes to spend his spare time heading north along the coast for nature shots and taking his time to wander around Yanchep

National Park finding the ‘right shot’ of koalas, kangaroos and the numerous birds that frequent the park. With an annual pass to the park it is easy for Andre to pop in for a quick stroll around. Visiting just recently on a hot day, Andre spent some time in the koala sanctuary, watching the koala’s enjoying the cool of the water sprinklers. This is how he got the shot of ‘Lyptus’ making the most of the water.

Sunset Markets More than 60 stalls will be at this Saturday’s Sunset Markets at Charnwood Park at Two Rocks, with many local businesses getting behind the event to help make it a success. Yanchep Two Rocks Community Recreation Association volunteers, Brooke Trimmer and Dorothy Dean, said local support has been instrumental to the organisation of the event. Ms Trimmer said: “The Reef, Two Rocks has come on board as a major supporter and sponsor which we’re very grateful for while our local supermarket, IGA Two Rocks, has also backed the event with sponsorship and supplies.

services at the event and we’re happy to say that they’ve leapt at the opportunity to join in.”

Rustic Romance, a local hire company will supply a unique range of rustic and antique furniture for market goers to relax on, while local face painter Danielle from Little Sparkles will delight the kids with her artistic skills and Krystal from Big and Bouncy will supply three awesome jumping castles for the kid’s zone. Ms Dean said local artist, Sarah-Jane Marchant, had donated her time and talent to paint the signs for the market.

“This means we’ve been able to do just that little bit extra to make it more than just a market with plenty of free kid’s entertainment and live music.

“Sarah has kindly donated her time and skills to decorate three boards for us that will add that little something extra to our kid’s zone - Wild Child, our second-hand section – Funky Junk Lane and the main entry board,” Ms Dean said.

“We’ve also approached many local businesses to supply

“We have been overwhelmed by the ongoing support and

generosity in the markets and we hope to attract as many people as we can to our community event. “The power of social media has been phenomenal, with the Sunset Markets Facebook page going viral.” The market will be held on Saturday 13 February, at Charnwood Park, Two Rocks from 4:00pm through to 8:00pm.

Celebration

Empire building As a person who attended two recent City of Wanneroo council meetings, a briefing session and a council meeting, I find it amazing the way the ‘council works’. Trying to comprehend and understand the set up of the council is confusing.

Late last month, June and Dominic Mulquiney from Two Rocks celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary with family and friends. They were married on the 29 January 1949, at Bowral in New South Wales. They have seven children, 13 grand-children and 16 great grand-children, living across the country. June and Dominic moved to Two Rocks 26 years ago and love the region, especially the beach and local fishing. June and Dominic said the formula for a long wonderful marriage is to have a ‘sense of humor and be happy’. Later this year, both June and Dominic will be celebrating their 90th birthdays

At the briefing session, groups of directors with additional staff spoke to the council meeting about selected items on the agenda and fielded a few questions. This appeared very adhoc and hit and miss especially after trying to work out what each director was supposed to be talking about. For example, the Director of Planning and Sustainability sounds simple enough, but in the agenda there was a referral to City Growth, Approval Services’ and most of the time this group of gentlemen’s explanations were more confusing then clarifying.

The next speaker was a Director of Assets which included asset operations and services, strategic asset management, infrastructure capital works and asset maintenance. I found this completely confusing, and felt it was gross empire building to set up numerous midmanagers or whatever fancy name they use these days. The next director and mangers were called ‘Community and Place’, which included: community facilities, community services and place strengthening. These directorates were very confusing with more managers. This short session was followed by the Corporate Strategy and Performance directorate which included transactional finance, property services, council and corporate support, and governance.

The chief executive office presented one report that tried to explain the needs for agribusiness. What has happened to the provision of local government services needed in a community, rather than what appears to be massive empire building on steroids. As a new resident in the outer northern suburbs, I find it unfathomable how the City of Wanneroo, one of the fastest growing region in Australia, as we keep getting told, seems to be out-of-touch with the wider community. Yes, I’ve read the ‘satisfaction report’ but really if you make the questions fit your desired outcomes, naturally you are going to get the results you want. My next ‘eye-opening’ observation was the balance of power within the elected members.

Some elected members obviously hadn’t read their agenda, because they asked Dorothy Dix questions, probably so that they appeared to be doing something. I think it is overdue for the entire three level government system in Australia to be reviewed and updated - Currently we are over-governed with sub-standard politicians. Whatever changes are made, all politicians at any level need to be qualified to be elected into a position that spends tens of millions of our money. I believe in some way state government and local councils could be combined, be more efficient and effective. I doubt anything change until it’s too - Most governments reactive not proactive progressive.

Pool officially waterwise Shire of Gingin’s aquatic centre has successfully satisfied all the criteria to be endorsed as a Waterwise Aquatic Centre. The Water Corporation recently congratulated the Shire for its participation in, and commitment to, the Water Corporation and Leisure Institute of WA Aquatics Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program, and for leading industry in sustainable water use.

Among the actions taken to improve the centre’s water efficiency included the installation of lowflow shower heads, dual flush toilet system, and Waterwise educational signage, as well as landscaping with Waterwise native plants and mulch. Monitoring sub-meters have been earmarked for installation shortly, which will record and analyse water use on the potable

We are mindful that ongoing water conservation practices play an important part in sustainable service delivery for the Shire.” A special presentation to the Shire will take place at the LIWA Aquatics State Conference in August.

Red Hawks start preseason Preseason training started this week for the Yanchep Red Hawks Football club with new and old faces seen training down at Yanchep’s Lagoon Beach. Led by their new coach, Michael ‘Mickey’ Sutherland, the boys were eager to get back into it after a break over the festive period. “There is a buzz in the air,” Mickey noted. “With the new clubrooms built, all involved within the club are looking forward to another

successful season on and off the field.” Being one of the founding members of the Yanchep Red Hawks Football Club, initially the Sun City Social Club, Mickey has been involved in many roles within the club that span over a 20 year period. Having been heavily involved within the football department over the years, this is his first head coach role and he is keen to develop and improve on last

year’s game format along with working towards both a colts and a reserves side. Mickey encouragingly invites all past, present and new players to get down to Oldham Oval every Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6pm for training. Newly elected president, Phil Smeeton, who has been associated with the club for over 15 years said: “This isn’t just a football club, this is a big family.” Phil has been quoted as

saying: “Some of the best people I know, I have meet through the Yanchep Red Hawks Football Club.” Working busily behind the scenes with the newly elected committee, Phil has set many goals this year which include becoming a ‘Gold Quality Club’ along with striving to become a premier football club north of the river. Anyone eager to help the Red Hawks can contact Phil Smeeton on 0408 933 108

In September 2014, the Sun City News alerted the City of Wanneroo to a number of health and compliance issues at Swan Valley Egg Farm in Carabooda. At the time, two health inspectors took numerous photos samples and indicated they would be looking seriously at prosecuting the owners, as this was not the first time they had come to the council’s attention. Last week, City of Wanneroo Director, Philip St John told the Sun City News: “The City started legal procedures against the chicken farm in October 2014, it was deemed not to continue with the prosecution, due to insufficient evidence and low penalty applicable. Subsequently, City Officers have dealt directly with farm operators and have detailed what is required of them to ensure compliance with relevant legislation. Since the owner of the property was issued notices under the Health Act, the City of Wanneroo has conducted follow up inspections and can advise that the site has been kept clean, with no manure or deceased birds visible. Photos: Hundreds of dead chickens and tonnes of manure dumped at the rear of the property that has been considered insufficient evidence to prosecute.

Community questions Over the past fortnight, a number of local residents have contacted the Sun City News about various local issues.  A Two Rocks gentleman has questioned the new Two Rocks finger jetty - He is having a little trouble understanding how a finger jetty that has incoming boats one side with the other side for outgoing boats can operate with the mounting piles positioned on the extreme edge? He says you need to move boats back and forth depending on which way you are going so as to allow someone else access. Being 50 metres long it allows a few boat to queue on the jetty, on the south side while controlling a boat with ropes as you do, there is no way you can get around the piles unless you are a monkey. He said: “I think monkeys designed it. Ocean Reef finger jetty is double sided with piles in the ‘middle’ no monkeys there.” There appears to have been a number issues at the boat ramp.

 Several people have expressed concerns about the T intersection being created on Two Rocks Road on the crest of the hill as you exit the current 60km/h zone. City of Wanneroo have confirmed they approved the intersection and to achieve the Austroads’ safe intersection sight distances for a vertical crest curve, they received approval from Main Roads Western Australia to reduce the posted speed from 90km/hr to 60 km/hr along Two Rocks road at this intersection. The City of Wanneroo was unable to provide a copy of the approved street layout for this new development, but stated ‘it can be viewed at the City’s offices’. “All signage and road markings for this intersection are approved by Main Roads Western Australia. In addition, provision has been made for turning and passing lanes on Two Rocks Road to accommodate vehicles slowing down to exit Two Rocks Road and enter Reef Break Drive.”

 An increasing number of local residents have contacted the Sun City News stating they don’t/won’t attend the Yanchep Two Rocks Residents Association meeting stating: “They are too political and don’t seem to get any thing done.” The Sun City News welcomes local community questions, we will contact the involved parties and seek an informative response without bias or political loaded. Some times the response can be quite quick, other times some research is needed and a response from a number of State Government of council departments is required. If you have a Community Question, email them to questions@suncitynews.com. au or post your question to Sun City News, PO Box 1, Two Rocks 6037. Just remember with the new Australia Post regular mail service, it can take up to eight to ten days to deliver a letter from Yanchep to Two Rocks.

Telstra, Australia’s biggest telecommunications provider is blaming human error for the ‘embarrassing’ outage that affected millions of mobile phone services across the country earlier this week, and may cost the company millions of dollars in compensation. Telstra has offered customers free data after millions of people were left without mobile phone voice and data services. In an effort to make amends, Telstra tweeted customers they could enjoy free mobile data next Sunday. The outage affected up to 16.7 million services attached to Telstra’s 3G and 4G networks and prevented phone calls from

connecting to customers mobile phones, while other users reported complete loss of phone and data services. Telstra confirmed the massive mobile phone service outage at 12.23pm AEDT, and did not start bringing services back online until after 2pm AEDT, though the company warned its service status page could display incorrect information due to overwhelming demand. Telstra chief operations officer, Kate McKenzie, said ‘the correct procedure was unfortunately not followed’ when working on one of the network’s 10 mobile nodes, causing massive ‘flow-on consequences’.

BOOK Credlin & Co: How the Abbott Government Destroyed Itself Whatever is left of Tony Abbott’s reputation is about to be shredded with a new book containing a string of revelations about the incompetence of his government, including on questions of national security. Credlin & Co: How the Abbott Government Destroyed Itself, written by Australian Financial Review journalist Aaron Patrick, differs from many other books on politics due to the author’s forensic and dispassionate approach to the subject. “I am not trying to push an ideological agenda,” he said. It was commonly said that Tony Abbott’s Chief of Staff, Peta Credlin, had more power than he did because she made more decisions. And the most common questions are: Why did Abbott allow the relationship to destroy his Prime Ministership? What peculiar psychology underpinned their relationship? Why did he ignore the advice coming from so many elder statesmen of his own party, as well as the repeated criticisms from the nation’s media?

Last Cab to Darwin is a 2015 Australian film directed and produced by Jeremy Sims and based on the 2003 play of the same name by Reg Cribb. Michael Caton (as Rex) and Jacki Weaver (as Dr. Nicole Farmer) have starring roles. When Rex, a taxi driver in Broken Hill, is told he doesn’t have long to live, he decides to pursue euthanasia at a clinic in Darwin. Along the way, he experiences various encounters which encourage him to re-evaluate his life. I thought this one of the best movies I have seen in a long, long time and up there with the Castle and the Dish. I thought the acting throughout good and especially Michael Caton. The story line was sad, but was very thought provoking when thinking about and discussion euthanasia. All in all I really enjoyed the story and especially loved seeing the outback of Australia. I cried a lot but I also laughed a lot and would recommend this movie to any age, except children of course.

She was his disciplinarian, his brain. “Peta Credlin became his best friend, strongest ally, his facilitator, his crutch,” Mr Patrick said. “I present scenarios where Ms Credlin was so aggressive, where she tried to exert control across the government, and give specific examples. Normal government processes broke down because Ms Credlin tried to exert so much power.” The question of whether the attacks on Peta Credlin were sexist, as Abbott repeatedly claimed, is explored in depth. “I came to the conclusion they were not,” Mr Patrick said. “I make the case that the attacks on Ms Credlin were driven by her actions, not her gender. She wanted to be the story, she loved being the story. Ego, desire for power, fame, that was what she wanted, that was what she got, that was what she enjoyed. And it destroyed both of them.” Tony Abbott was hardly the first politician to use terror and national security to advance his own ends, but perhaps one of the first to allow his chief of staff to play such a decisive role,” Mr Patrick said.

“Tony Abbott used war for political purposes and I explore that in some depth,” the author said. “Ms Credlin played a central role. The book explores her influence over national security policy. In his dying days Abbott reached out to the terror threat as a dying man reaches out to water. It was an issue they thought would save them.” Included in the book are previously unpublished revelations about Ms Credlin’s interaction with the Defence Department. One of the few people to emerge from Credlin & Co in a positive light is Foreign Minister, Julie Bishop, who Mr Patrick said withstood Credlin’s ceaseless bullying. The book reveals new details of the two women’s falling out. “There is a whole sub-chapter on the powerplay between Bishop and Credlin,” Patrick said. “She was tough enough to stand up and say no, but they tried it on. Bishop comes out looking much better than most other people.” Mr Patrick said while both Ms Credlin and Mr Abbott refused to speak to him for the book, he was surprised by how much assistance others gave him, figures within the Liberal Party and within the bureaucracy. “Ms Credlin alienated so many people, she just destroyed a lot of Mr Abbott’s good will within his own party,” Mr Patrick said. While refusing to reveal his sources, Canberra’s senior mandarins (public servants), many of whom disliked Mr Abbott and Ms Credlin intensely, are also believed to have helped provide background for the book. “The official channels were shut, but the others weren’t,” he said. “It made the book better.” As to why the Australian public continue to be fascinated by Abbott in a kind of gawkish way, as if rubbernecking at a car crash, Mr Patrick said: “In terms of the book, I am glad Abbott is hanging around. “Abbott is still a story, and the effect he is going to have on the Australian government is an open question. “Abbott was born in England in the 1950s and he is still a creature of it. He represents a narrow strand in Australian culture which is in many ways more

British than Australian, and that is part of the reason why he was unsuccessful. “He is not a modern Australian. To be an effective leader you need to engage across the ideological spectrum. “Abbott used Credlin as a crutch to do his dirty work, trying to enforce his socially conservative agenda across the whole of government. Australians are not like that. We are a liberal society. “People have a fascination for Abbott because he is a truly weird man, and he got to be Prime Minister, which is pretty remarkable.” Credlin & Co: How the Abbott Government Destroyed Itself is avail in book stores or online now. Mr Patrick’s first book, Downfall: How the Labor Government Ripped Itself Apart, was published in 2013.

New survey finds ‘healthy’ smoothies are just as bad as a Big Mac Boost Juice said some of its smoothies are designed to replace meals.

Health experts are warning Australians to be wary of store bought smoothies, after a survey of 40 cold drinks found some contained more kilojoules than a Big Mac and more sugar than a bottle of soft drink.

“Unlike a fizzy drink which offers empty calories, these products contain important things like healthy fats, protein, vitamins, fibre and minerals, which the LiveLighter research ignores,” it said in a statement.

A survey from government funded health program, LiveLighter, found smoothies and frappés from Boost Juice, Gloria Jeans and McDonald’s were some of the worst offenders.

“For example our Protein Supreme contains coconut water, banana, honey, coconut milk, chia seeds, dates, muesli, cinnamon and whey protein powder. The sugar in the product is mostly naturally occurring, from fructose and lactose.”

To put the following numbers in context, the recommended daily kilojoule intake for adults is 8700kj and the World Health Organisation recommends we consume no more than six teaspoons of added sugar per day. Boost Juice’s ‘Brekkie to GoGo Super smoothie’ contains 2560kj, 500kj more than a Big Mac (2060kj) and 18 teaspoons of sugar. The ‘Protein Supreme’ smoothie from Boost’s Black Label range, which is marketed as ‘premium smoothies with an abundance of nutrition’, contains 2360kj and 12 teaspoons of sugar. The Gloria Jeans ‘Mango Fruzie’, marketed as ‘98 per cent fat free’, contains 31 teaspoons of sugar and 2150kj. McDonald’s Large Bananaberry Bash smoothie is labelled ‘99 per cent fat free’, but contains 17 teaspoons of sugar.

Nutritionist Dr Joanna McMillan says consumers shouldn’t be sucked in by terms used to market smoothies.

“Food outlets use phrases like 97 per cent ‘fat free’ or ‘dairy free’ to make their smoothies and frappés sound healthy, but with up to 31 teaspoons of sugar and as many kilojoules as a Big Mac, these drinks can actually do more harm than good,” LiveLighter’s Alison Ginn said.

which increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.”

“Like with soft drinks and other sugary drinks, regular consumption of frappés and smoothies can contribute to weight gain and a build up of toxic fat around your organs,

Following the release of the survey results, Gloria Jeans says it will no longer market its Fruzie range as 98 per cent fat free.

To limit the damage caused by these drinks, Ms Ginn recommends choosing the smallest size drink available, asking for skim milk or sharing with a friend.

“In order to better represent the drinks to consumers in line with

feedback from the community, we have removed this reference,” said a Gloria Jeans spokesperson. “In line with our commitment to be open and transparent with our guests, Gloria Jean’s coffees now displays the kilojoule content for each product on all menus across the country.” A McDonald’s spokeswoman said kilojoule information is also displayed on its menu boards to help customers make ‘informed decisions’ about what they order.

“Just because something says it’s gluten-free or dairy-free or fat free or natural, doesn’t make it healthy. People get confused by those terms and some of the kilojoules in these things are off the charts,” she said. Dr McMillan says the healthiest smoothies are those made at home with mostly vegetables and a small amount of fruit to sweeten. “If you’re going to buy a smoothie, look for the kilojoule count, look at the ingredients and don’t be bamboozled by trendy ingredients like coconut oil or coconut milk. They just add kilojoules,” she said.
