Celebrating 10 years Guilderton Community Library will celebrate their tenth anniversary next week. The library is fully run and operated by local volunteers.

This library is a wonderful example of a self-sufficient and nurturing community.

Library co-ordinator, Madeline Henshaw, started the library by donating her own books. The library now has over 5,000 books.

It has become a meeting hub every Saturday morning bringing people together to share not only a love for reading, but a sense of community friendship.

The enthusiasm for the library grew quickly and the building housing the library was more than doubled in size in 2013.

Over the past ten years, a number of WA authors have inspired library attendees with their stories.

The Guilderton Community Library is located in Edwards Street near the caravan park. The library is open every Saturday morning between 10.00am and 12noon. Everyone is welcome. On Saturday 9 July, the community is invited to attend a celebration morning tea at the library - See you there!

Little Free Library

Neergabby resident, Laura Parker, has set up a very popular ‘Little Free Library’ on Military Road, near Gingin Brook Road promoting literacy and the love of reading. The Neergabby Little Free Library was registered and built late last year from the local tree and an old kitchen cupboard. Each Little Library is unique in their structure be comply with a worldwide organisation. Little Free Library is a non-profit organisation that supports a worldwide movement to offer free books housed in small containers to members of the local community. Starting in 2009, Todd Bol from Hudson, Wisconsin, built the first Little Library. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard. His neighbours and friends loved it. He built several more and gave them away. Each one had a sign that said free books. By 2010, the mission of the little boxes of books was clear. The original library models were built with recycled materials. Each library was unique, but all shared the theme of exchanging good books and bringing people together. Today, it is estimated there are over 25,000 Little Library’s registered around the world. The Neergabby Little Free Library is registered with littlelibrary.org and has had visits from numerous overseas visitors including United Kindgom, and British Columbia. Several people travelling around Western Australia have ‘taken a book, and returned a book from another Little Library’. There are about 20 Little Free Libraries across Western Australia.

Editor’s desk make an effort to give it.

Everybody is worthy of respect simply because they exist, because they are there in front of you. You may not approve of a person’s behavior, but do not condemn them.

Respect begets respect - It’s so easy to give respect to those who are worthy of it in your eyes, but how about giving respect to those who don’t quite measure up. Giving respect to all and not just those you like is the true meaning of giving respect. But, when someone out and out continually ‘lies’ to you or provides misleading information or only pat information, how can you continue to give respect? This not only applies to individuals, but businesses, community organisations including local government authorities. Sometimes we believe we should only exercise this quality of respect towards those who have demonstrated that they are deserving of it. Yet, it is possible to have regard for all, despite their actions in the moment. In fact, when we don’t give regard to all, we deprive ourselves. Respect is one of our innate qualities. So in truth, we should not really need to

When one has self-respect, then one need not compare or compete with another. That one can be assured that whatever is meant to come their way will do so, and in its right time. A person with self-respect understands that to compare is futile, and to compete is nonsensical. By contrast, comparing and competing are both symptoms of a fragile, inflated ego, and ego and esteem are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Although some think they are the same, they are definitely not. Ego is always looking outward to what others are doing, wondering whether I am ‘better than’, or ‘worse than’ and always causes pain. Parents concerned about school

LOCAL NEWSPAPERS ARE THE

#1

SOURCE ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESSES

A number of concerned parents who have children at Gingin District High School have set up a petition expressing their concerns about the direction and management of Gingin District High School. Some of the issues concerning parents include: student behaviour being managed ineffectively; growing problem of bullying and the lack of proactive response; insufficient intervention for students at educational and emotional risk; lack of support and compassion for parents; decreases in enrollments; increases in students exiting; selective approach when collecting data; lack of transparency; lack of initiative to address growing community concerns; breakdown in relations between Gingin District High School and significant community stakeholders; and lack of specialty programs. (eg: language programs, music and performing arts). The petition is asking the Department of Education Director General, Sharyn O’Neill, Minister of Education, Peter Collier and the Shire of Gingin to take action towards Gingin District High School’s management and leadership. The petition also states: “The negative effects Gingin District High School is having on the children of Gingin, the parents of Gingin and the wider community must be addressed. We urge Gingin District High School be reviewed by the Education Review Group with an aim to provide answers to our concerns and to allocate new leadership, therefore restoring confidence with our students, parents and the general community.” Claudia Williamson told the Sun City News: “We moved to Gingin, 12 months ago, our then Year 1 child came from a school where she was thriving socially and in her education; within weeks she did not want to attend school. We had not been contacted by the school.

“Come Year 2, it only took a few weeks for her to be in distress on a regular basis each morning because of issues at school. Her teacher is wonderful and has been a great help in settling. Even so, our daughter has had a few run ins with a well known girl that makes her life miserable. My son in pre-primary at the moment has a teacher that thinks yelling and being demeaning to 5 year olds is a sensible way of teaching. As a result he does not want to attend certain days at school when she is on roster.” Another Gingin parent told the Sun City News: “I’m tired of going to this school over children physically hurting my child, he has had his pants pulled down and continually gets teased.” Several other parents have raised concerns about a variety of issues at this school. School principal, Kevin Brady, told the Sun City News: “I want to assure parents that the behaviour of our students is a matter taken very seriously by our staff and, when we are made of aware of them, all incidents are resolved.” Kylie Greer, past president of the P&C at the school said: “There has been strong community support and momentum building in a locally created petition with change.org regarding the concerns surrounding the direction and leadership of Gingin District High School.” The petition is asking Education Department’s Director General, Sharyn O’Neill, to ‘Fix our school’. At the Sun City News web site (suncitynews. com.au) you can read more details - Full accounts of incidents and issues at Gingin District High School along with the principal, Keven Brady’s full response. The petition can be found at www.change.org.

Kangaroos to be moved Steps are being taken to address the ongoing kangaroo population issue in Yanchep thanks to intervention by the City of Wanneroo, with a twopronged approach agreed to by involved parties. The first stage, construction of containment fencing along all perimeters of the area has already begun and will be undertaken by land developers and Sun City Country Club with a small section to be installed by the City of Wanneroo. The second stage will see the relocating of the existing kangaroo population by Sun City Country Club when the fence is complete.

City of Wanneroo Mayor, Tracey Roberts said: “While this issue is not the responsibility of the City of Wanneroo, it is wonderful to see our action has led the responsible parties to work collaboratively to resolve this situation.” Kangaroos are a protected ‘fauna’ (animal) under the Wildlife and Conservation Act which is administered by DPaW, but the management of kangaroos located on private land falls to the owners of the property involved. In the St Andrews Estate, Yanchep location, the kangaroo population involves several major properties, until recently

there has not been kangaroo management process. The current kangaroo containment program involves SCCC, Peet, Prime West, Yanchep Beach Joint Venture and the Western Australian Planning Commission, who own affected property in the area. DPaW has been providing advice on dealing with the kangaroos but they don’t get any further involved due to budget constraints. If you see anyone encouraging their dog(s) to attack a kangaroo, call RSPCA on 1300 278 3589, they will investigate and penalties can be as high as $10,000 plus being named.

Yanchep cadet represents WA field engineering, leadership and problem solving. After successfully competing in the Challenge, Cadet Corporal Monika Smith, said: “I’ve gained confidence and a stronger sense of teamwork from this experience, as well as making some new friends. I’m really pleased that I can just say I’ve done it!” Monika was one of six cadets from units located in the Joondalup and Wanneroo area. Fifteen-year-old Army Cadet, Monika Smith from Yanchep, represented Western Australia at the coveted ‘Chief of Army Cadet Team Challenge Trophy’ at Gallipoli Barracks, Queensland. During the gruelling three-day event the team of ten WA cadets was assessed on a range of skills including: field navigation, use of radio procedure, first aid and patient management,

Commander Australian Army Cadets, Brigadier Wayne Budd, AM, CSC, praised all 80 cadets who worked hard to complete the challenge. There are around 16,000 Army Cadets ranging in age from 12 to 18 years in 212 Units spread across all States and Territories of Australia. The Chief of Army’s Challenge is considered the most sought after Cadet award.

Successful Q&A debate at Two Rocks Despite a cold, wet wintery night a great crowd turned out for the inaugural ‘Local Q&A Debate’ with candidates from the three major parties in this weekend’s Federal Government ‘Double Dissolution’ election. Christian Porter, sitting member for Pearce, Thomas French from the Labor Party, and LeeAnne Miles from The Greens answered local residents’ questions and ‘put the sword into each other’ about numerous statements they each made. Each of the candidates revealed a little about themselves and responded to questions about local Centrelink fraud, Medicare, the rail to Yanchep, employment and the need for local infrastructure to support this fast growing northern corridor. After nearly two hours of questions and answers, the candidates mingled with the audience enjoying a coffee/

tea with sandwiches and cakes provided by three local ladies. Pearce electorate is a strange mix of urban-rural areas defined by its proximity to Perth rather than their relationship to each other. The boundaries take in an arc of rural areas to the north and east of Perth, extending from Lancelin on the coast through Gingin to the historic agricultural towns of Toodyay, Northam, York and south to Beverley and Westdale. It also includes two disconnected parts of suburban Perth; this includes Clarkson, Carramar, Banksia Grove and suburbs along the coast to Two Rocks, as well as the lower Swan Valley and Ellenbrook. The electorate covers 13,250 square kilometres, Christian Porter holds a 9.3 per cent margin.

After the Q&A Debate a ‘Peg Poll’ was held with the audience having their opportunity to cast their vote - Christian Porter finished with 66 per cent, Thomas French 30 per cent and Lee-Anne Miles four per cent.

Polling booths for Saturday’s voting are located at Yanchep District High School, Phil Renkin Centre, and most towns across the Shire of Gingin with polling booths open from 8.00am until 6.00pm.

The Yanchep Two Rocks Recreation Association will be holding a Sausage Sizzle at the Phil Renkin - Stop by a say hello to these wonderful volunteers.

Safari Zoo roars into Ocean Keys

It’s not every day a swaying giraffe or grazing elephant pop up in the middle of a suburban shopping mall, but when Safari Zoo comes to Ocean Keys Shopping Centre on Monday 4 July, kids will get to experience the wonder of safari with life-like animatronic animals on display. Zookeepers from Perth Zoo will be hosting informative tours of the realistic, moving animal displays as well as manning the Junior Vet Hospital, where children have the chance to play vet alongside zookeepers to help diagnose and treat stuffed animals.

Also on offer is the Jungle Craft Zone, where children can unleash their wild side with mask-making and sand art workshops. The educational and interactive Safari Zoo at Ocean Keys Shopping Centre is a free event and will run from 4 to 16 July. Register for activities on 9407 2411.

Changes to services As a result of a recent City of Wanneroo council decision, State and Federal government funding changes will have a minimal impact on the City’s financial counselling services. In the past, the City received government funding which was used to employ the equivalent of three full time counsellors who provided an invaluable service to residents in financial stress. The announcement of funding cuts by the Department of Child Protection and Families in 2015, had cast a shadow on how the City of Wanneroo could continue to assist its residents. The issue of financial counselling funding was later transferred to the Department of Local Government and Communities (DLGS). Since the budget cuts, the DLGS has been able to fund a service but with reduced support. City of Wanneroo approved fee waivers to the value of $65,000 for The Spiers Centre to operate from Hainsworth Community Centre in Girrawheen, the Phil Renkin Centre in Two Rocks, the Butler Community Centre and the Wanneroo Civic Centre.

Shire thanks Seabird Following a decision to extend the Seabird seawall, the Shire of Gingin would like to express its appreciation to the Seabird Progress Association who contributed $20,000 toward funding the additional work.

The average bill for ambulance transport from Gingin and Bindoon to a hospital in the metropolitan area is around $850.

At a Special Council Meeting on 3 June, the council resolved to extend the seawall currently under construction at Seabird to protect local infrastructure, including a car park, access road, boardwalk and informal boat/vehicle access ramp to the beach. While this infrastructure is currently in reasonable condition and fit for purpose, recent storm activity at Seabird has placed it under immediate threat requiring urgent action. Shire President, David Roe, said: “Taking both options into consideration, Council resolved to approve a variation to extend the seawall a further 91 metres to protect this infrastructure.

From as little as $84.00/family or $51.00/single per year, you can join St John Ambulance Benefit Fund and have ‘peace of mind’ about your next ambulance ride. The cost of your ambulance trip is covered if you have comprehensive country ambulance cover. This includes emergency transports for you, or one of your family members. “Council also approved the raising of a loan to cover the additional work, with the Seabird Progress Association providing $20,000 toward the cost as well. This contribution is gratefully received and on behalf of the Shire of Gingin we thank them very much.”

The seawall is being constructed by NEO Infrastructure who are progressing well and are expected to have the project completed on time and on budget.

REVIEW WEIVER MUSIC

BOOK The one who got away We all keep secrets. Some are deadly. Loren Wynne-Estes appears to have it all: she’s the girl from the wrong side of the tracks who’s landed a handsome husband, a stunning home, a fleet of shiny cars and two beautiful daughters. Then one day a fellow parent taps Loren on the shoulder outside the grand school gate, hands her a note and suddenly every thing’s at stake. Loren’s Facebook-perfect marriage is spectacularly exposed, revealing an underbelly of lies and betrayal. What is uncovered will scandalise a small town, destroy lives and leave a family divided. But who is to be believed and who is to blame? Will the right person be brought to justice or is there one who got away?

In My Blood They bared their souls on the triumphant comeback song ‘You Ruin Me’; now The Veronicas reveal everything for their new single ‘In My Blood’. Lisa and Jess Origliasso wore only purple glitter body paint for the artwork shoot for the song which was released on 10 June. The singing siblings are remaining coy about their reasons for the nude photo which appears to channel X-Men’s Mystique. But Jess revealed the song is about a recent experience of love at first sight. Jess and Lisa revealed they came to blows when recording You Ruin Me, fighting over who would sing the lead parts. They aren’t yelling at each other at the moment with Jess fighting off the flu ahead of their next record. The ambitious shoot for In My Blood was done in Los Angeles recently with rising young Russian photographer, Sasha Samsonova, who they found on Instagram and has taken the fashion world by storm. She has recently completed shoots with Kylie and Kendall Jenner and Fifth Harmony for their album cover. With You Ruin Me achieving triple platinum sales and spending weeks at No. 1, The Veronicas will be hoping lightning strikes twice with In My Blood.

What I particularly love about writer, Caroline Overington’s work is that she’s not afraid to tackle controversial issues; not to mention the fact that her books are contemporary and very timely. We’re in the heads of Loren, her stepsister Molly, a reporter/TV presenter, and a judge.

It’s quite an eclectic bunch but ultimately makes sense. I, initially, wasn’t quite sure of Overington’s decision to make the judge a narrator as I assumed him to be a minor player, but it works. There are a few twists and turns and information’s eked out via different sources, so it’s clever to share events from different points of view. The timing of the novel jumps about a little: some sections are written in the present; and others, some time after the events they’re relaying or recapping. And, there’s a diary. The inclusion of the different narrators and time frames help maintain the novel’s pace and keep us guessing. It’s ultimately a psychological thriller so we’re left wondering who did what. It’s actually difficult as I can’t touch on much of the plot without giving significant portions away. The book’s well-written and the characters rounded, though I didn’t feel I knew them well. We’re only privy to some of them second hand however, and our narrators are ‘possibly’ not completely reliable; which is, of course, part of the point.

DVD Concussion Will Smith returns to the screen with the release of the biographical drama ‘Concussion’. Concussion is based on the true story of Dr Bennet Omalu, a forensic neuro-pathologist who was the first person to discover the existence of chronic trauma encephalopathy, a neurological deterioration found in former NFL players who experienced repeated brain trauma. After publishing his findings on the disease, which is similar to Alzheimer’s disease, Dr Bennett finds himself fighting against the powerful NFL institution who initially dismiss his claims. But Dr Omula doesn’t give up, pushing to ensure his findings become known to the public, and help bring awareness to players about the risks involved in the game.

The film also stars Alec Baldwin as former Steelers team doctor Julian Bailes. Though reviews for th film have been mixed, Will Smith has been praised for his performance which earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Golden Globes and Actor of the Year at the Hollywood Film Awards. I would have thought the fact that a full contact sport causes brain damage would be obvious, but apparently we needed a weird doctor and a movie about that doctor before figuring it out. Who would have thought repeatedly running at full speed head first into other people could be hazardous? While the film isn’t among the worst I ever saw, it is at most ‘vaguely’ entertaining.

Caroline Overington is not afraid to tackle the big issues and that her work is topical, her ability to come up with an intriguing plot and run with it is very impressive.

Redhawks consolidate

School holiday activities

Denis Heaney

In almost perfect football conditions the Redhawks faced up to Coolbellup in their Round 10 clash at Oldham Park. The ninth placed Coolbellup were the least fancied of the five sides battling for the fifth finals spot and Redhawks supporters were confident that the home side should take the points comfortably. However, this was not to be as the visitors jumped to an early lead and finished the first quarter with a 13 point lead. The second quarter saw the Redhawks dominate the midfield only to be let down by inaccurate goal kicking which yielded 2.4 opposed to Coolbellup’s 1.2 and left the home side trailing by five points at the main break. Most home supporters were anticipating that the Redhawks would produce their best in the traditional premiership quarter, but poor kicking for goal again saw the sides even at three quarter time and with the scorecard of 6.10.46 to 7.4.46 being a true reflection of how the game had been played. The final term saw an extremely disappointing lacklustre effort from Yanchep and this lack of effort combined with inaccurate kicking saw the Coolbellup boys cruise to an 18 point victory. With eight games to play the Hawks cling to fifth place with four teams all within striking distance one win away and Yanchep will to pull out all stops in remaining fixtures to hang on to fifth spot and as three of the games are against teams engaged in the battle for fifth spot we can look forward to

some interesting hard fought football in the forthcoming weeks. Best players: Kurt Manning, Deon Alderton, Chris Curgenven and Aaron Wiggins with Deon Alderton and Chris Watson each kicking two goals. Despite the disappointing on field effort, it must be said that the Yanchep Redhawks’ off field team was at its best, with covered areas provided for supporters of both clubs, along with the truck on the outer hill which had the scoreboard set up on the back tray and as it turned out the siren also issued from this site. Another club supporter had set up a mobile pizza oven to provide after match sustenance for players and spectators. Club officials were busy with the president, Phil Smeeton, doubling as interchange steward and the treasurer, the receptionist at the medical centre during the week, selling cans of coke and Mars bars in the canteen. In addition, there were the coaches, runners, water boys and other game

Finally, there were the spectators who were enjoying the sun, hospitality and football and did not at any stage, see fit to criticise the umpires. All in all, a fantastic day illustrating exactly what football, and in particular community football is all about. Round 12, last Saturday, saw the Redhawks atone to some extent for their poor efforts last game by convincingly defeating Forrestfield by 82 points,17.7.109 to 4.3.27. This leaves the Redhawks a game clear in fifth with an extremely important game coming up this week against sixth placed Bayswater at Hillcrest Park, Coode Street. The game starts at 2.30pm, all supports are encouraged to ‘get to the game’ and scream for the Redhawks. Main goal kickers: Wilton 5, McDonnell 4, Butler 3 and O’Driscoll 2. A team effort resulted in this good win highlighted by a seven goal last quarter.
