citizens concerned about those few ‘trouble makers’. We need to work as a community to develop solutions to these unwanted undesirable activities. What a crazy start to the new year, two months in and we’ve had active fire bugs in the region, growing hooning problems, deadly car accidents, increasing local domestic violence, ongoing school bullying and out-of-control drug issues, just to mention a few. Many people are quick to highlight that there aren’t enough police, or blame someone or something else for the cause or lack of solutions for these problems. The buck stops with each and everyone of us. As residents, who want a safe and friendly community, we need to be part of the solution, not ostriches with our heads in the sand. Really, the problem is not as bad or as big as we think - Over 90 per cent of us are decent good

I’ve seen the Yanchep Two Rocks community rally together and use their united efforts to resolve these types of problems in the past. While we continue to be isolated in our homes, or passing the buck to someone else to ‘sort out’ the disruptive minority; issues continue to grow because it becomes known that a particular area is ‘lazy, lax’ towards this type of behaviour. Giving up, selling up and moving out doesn’t solve the problem. To start making our local community a better place to live, we need to ‘be a community’, get to know your neighbours, talk to each other, encourage local involvement and respect for each other. As local schools, long established community groups,

community centres, local clubs we to need to get more involved in the community - Especially our fast growing community.

something else, the priority will increase and the matter will get attended to quicker - This is data driven policing.

There is a simple way to get started to make your community a safer place to live - Go to the police!

Often, the Sun City News has approached the local police about an issue that’s been reported to us, only to be told “We have not heard anything about it, why don’t they report it to us?”

I know, you will say, we have and they don’t do anything - The fact is the more times you report your concerns, get an incident report number, the quicker that issue will get addressed. Modern policing with limited staffing is ‘data based’; so to ensure your community is safe, drug free and a delight to be part of, the community must learn how to utilise these limited services. Police don’t deliberately go out of their way to avoid local issues, they are given prioritised tasks, if your problem rates low, you are at the end of the queue. If several residents continually report their concerns, be it hooning, local drug dealing or

In today’s society, if a community wishes to enjoy a peaceful, enjoyable family life, then the people in the community need to help themselves. Be a community neighbourhood leader, ask your neighbours if they are concerned about the same problem/issue and work out how you can resolve it. Traditionally, resident associations used to be very helpful with local community issues, but today, our local association has a different agenda. Don’t ever stop trying to make your local community safe, friendly and drug free; working with your neighbour is the best solution.

Local heritage threatened A City of Wanneroo’s review of their Municipal Heritage List is recommending the delisting of 37 sites including eight in the Yanchep Two Rocks region. The recommended delisting includes the world famous Mark Le Buse Waugal Monolith at Two Rocks; the unique limestone walls at the Two Rocks Shopping Centre Marina precinct; and the Yanchep National Park Avenue of Trees. The report was withdrawn from last week’s council meeting, after councillors raised concerns at the briefing session. The City of Wanneroo told the Sun City News: “The heritage consultants were commissioned to reassess all heritage places for heritage value under the State Heritage Office Guidelines. “The heritage consultants are recommending the Two Rocks Limestone Wall and the Waugal

Monoliths be removed from the inventory because they are considered to have insufficient heritage value for inclusion.” Many local residents are concerned once these wellregarded unique features are delisted, developers will be given the ‘all clear’ to destroy these structures. The Sun City News understands, Capricorn Yanchep’s management group, Acumen’s principal, Nick Perignon told last month’s Residents Association meeting that Fini would want the limestone wall demolished so a stronger wall could be built to support the proposed five to eight storey apartments they want to build. When asked about Capricorn speaking on behalf of other developers, Mr Perignon said: “I speak for Acumen Development Solutions and I am qualified to speak on any potential development matters, especially which promote the future growth of Two Rocks.”

City of Wanneroo said they couldn’t provide a full copy of the consultants report, but a copy was available to view at the Council’s reception. Since the report was questioned, the City of Wanneroo says it will go through an consultative exercise with the Heritage Advisory Committee and Wanneroo Historic Society to determine whether they should be retained or not. For over 100 years, the City of Wanneroo has been highly regarded for their progressive approach towards retaining and preservation of their local heritage. Do you think these important local heritage items should be retained? Should the local community be consulted about their local heritage? Send your comments to myview@suncitynews.com.au

Your letters and emails Quigley speaks out

Thank you for affording the space and time to publish John Quigley’s response to the Premier’s Statement setting out his governments agenda and aims for 2016. John Quigley has detailed the minimum requirements for this area to allow its residents to function in an effective and productive manner, which should be the aim and purpose of any sensible government. In one address he has highlighted the lack of infrastructure and regional development, the looming bottleneck on Hester Ave, the lack of resolve to provide timely responses to police issues, and the deteriorating nature of the national park. It appears the State Government is more intent on building edifices in inner Perth as a legacy (Bell Tower, Elizabeth Quay) rather than supporting a huge community which I hope has a long memory when voting. I await with interest Christian Porter’s response in your newspaper from a Federal prospective to Mr Quigley’s support of his electorate. Peter Stainthorpe, Yanchep.

School reunion

Forty years ago, in February 1976, Yanchep Community School opened its doors to its first intake of 46 students. To celebrate this momentous occasion, which involved not only the teenagers themselves but their parents and a number of local ‘helpers’, a reunion lunch will be held at the Two Rocks Tavern at noon on Sunday 13 March, and this is my personal warm invitation to anyone interested; and especially those

who helped make a success of this school, including staff to join us in our celebrations.

Dose of dorin

We are looking forward to a splendid party, so do come and add your own reminiscences of an occasion that marked a real turning point in the ongoing history of Yanchep/Two Rocks. Tickets are $20pp, call Jo on 0414 702 726, or you can purchase a ticket at the venue on the day. Barbara Morgan, Founding Director.

Quick response

Following my phone call to the City of Wanneroo, I want to thank them for removing the dumped rubbish in Village Row, Yanchep, near the shops - It was removed the day after my call. Elena Lumsdaine, Yanchep.

Should be premier

John Quigley should be the state Premier - He is fantastic! He was correct in everything he said. Wouldn’t it be a great idea to have Barnett live in Two Rocks, and get him to drive into the city every morning for a month - He would soon get sick of that. The government is so useless, I don’t know why the people voted them in. Clearly no-one was paying attention, or they were too stupid to look at both sides. I know Labor likes to spend the money, and it’s so called money we don’t have, but it creates infrastructure, that’s not outdated. It creates jobs. And what do jobs do for people? Jobs create money for families, individuals, who use this to buy things like cars and houses, household products, which creates jobs for tradies or

commissions for sales staff, who spend it.

in the roos because I have trained them not to be.

This creates a need for more products, so more jobs to build the products.

The fence is appalling and I cannot believe, or I can actually, the pathetically inept Wanneroo council approved it.

It’s not rocket science. Spend money to make more money!! More jobs, more taxes, more infrastructure. It all goes around. Kristel Arundel, via Facebook.

Agree

I totally agree with you Kristel. Topsy Mann, via Facebook.

Stop madness

I walk my dogs off leash at St. Andrews Park and can confirm the poor roos are now present in dramatically increased numbers since the fence went up. My dogs are under my control at all times and are not interested

We as a local community should gather signatures and demand its removal based on environmental impact. The golf course wants to erect signs promoting itself with roos pictured on the course but they only want ‘a few for tourism’ and get rid of the rest - Double standards and unbelievable disregard for the community it resides in. Every day the roos used to lounge alongside the road verge on St. Andrews beside the course, harming no one and promoting all who saw them to spend a moment admiring their beauty or to smile at their antics.

The erection of this disgusting fence means even more confusion for these animals who are being boxed in and their homes for centuries bulldozed. Stop the madness! Emily Batchelor, via Facebook.

They’ll learn

I think they can put their fence wherever they like, it’s their property, their business, and nobody elses, the roos will eventually head back towards the [national] park when they figure out they can’t eat and drink at the golf course any more. Luke Parsons, via Facebook.

Construction starts

Construction of the new Yanchep Surf Life Club a $6.78M project has started. Local surf lifesavers have said they are looking forward to having a new facility in operation as they have outgrown their old building. With the new club in operation, the surf club will have an enclosed area where they can store their ďŹ rst-aid equipment. The City of Wanneroo have closed the lower car park at Yanchep Lagoon at the northern end of the lagoon to allow for the ongoing construction. This car park, which is entered from the Brazier Road and Capricorn Esplanade roundabout, will be closed until

construction is completed, anticipated to be in November 2016. City of Wanneroo said they understand the car park closure will cause inconvenience, the timing will result in the majority of the works being undertaken during the winter months. Throughout the construction period, residents will still be able to access the lagoon. Pedestrian access will be maintained down to the beach via the existing stair access, diagonally opposite the kiosk. The City of Wanneroo apologies for any inconvenience caused during this time. Crazy long weekend Most people associate long weekends with relaxation, rest and enjoyment, sadly the Labour Day weekend, last week, was anything but that. Firstly, it was great to see the mobile booze bus out and about on Yanchep Beach Road and Two Rocks Road, checking for drink/drug driving. Then just before sunset, a vehicle chase ended in a crash in the Lindsay Beach Estate on Capricorn Esplanade. Police seized the crashed vehicle and the driver was given a mandatory sentence. Early Saturday night, a scrub fire started near the Yanchep Surf Club and houses - This kept the volunteer and career fire fighters busy for several hours. Rumors quickly spread that the surf club building was burnt out - This is incorrect. The fire was near the building and nearby beachside homes. The Sun City News understands the fire is suspicious and that several youths were seen in the area. Police are investigating and looking for the youths. Then at the closed access road into Durrs Track at the corner of Damepattie and Sovereign Drive, in Two Rocks, police spent several hours supervising the recovery of three vehicles illegally using the track.

Some residents questioned whether there were any rangers on duty. It took over five hours to recover the vehicles. Police told the Sun City News that they had all the vehicle registrations and contact details of the people involved and would pass their report on to City of Wanneroo and Yanchep police. Then, in the early hours of Sunday morning, a male driver was stop in Yanchep, he blew 0.172, nearly four times over the legal limit; instant loss of licence. About 8.30pm, Sunday night, a beige Hyundai Sonata sedan travelling south on Two Rocks Road, Yanchep, overtook a silver Holden Rodeo utility also travelling south.

At one stage there were three police vehicles and a professional 4WD recovery vehicle involved.

While overtaking, the Hyundai collided head on with a pink Mitsubishi Mirage travelling north on Two Rocks Road.

The Sun City News is aware of calls made to the City of Wanneroo’s 24 hour ranger service, but rangers did not attend or return calls.

The driver and a passenger in the Hyundai, and the driver of the Mitsubishi were killed as a result of the crash.

The driver of the Hyundai is a 24 year old male of Nollamara. His front seat passenger is a 25 year old female from Two Rocks. The other passengers in this vehicle were a 30 year old man of an unknown address (deceased), a 23 year female of an unknown address, and a 25 year old male of an unknown address. All injured people were conveyed to Royal Perth Hospital. The driver of the Mitsubishi Mirage was a 47 year old woman of Two Rocks. The passenger is a 17 year old male of Two Rocks, and he was conveyed to Joondalup Health Campus. Two occupants in the Holden Rodeo were uninjured. Major Crash investigators would like anyone who observed the crash, or who observed the Hyundai in the period prior to the crash, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online at crimestopperswa.com.au

Kangaroos concern golfers Social media has gone viral with numerous issues about the new 1.8 metre fence built around the Sun City Country Club (SCCC) golf course and kangaroos on both sides of the fence.

Sadly, since this incident, there appears to have been several more incidents with the small mob of about 15 to 20 roos trapped outside the golf course. There have been reports of more dog attacks, cars hitting roos and an allegation of poisoning some kangaroos.

SCCC president, Greg Mitchell, told the Sun City News they had over 3,500 kangaroos on the course causing a problem and they needed to manage the problem.

An online petition has been started and has over 1700 signatures in less than a week.

Mr Mitchell said the fence was built for safety reasons, to stop people trespassing on the property.

At a community meeting held in Old Nursery Park on Monday afternoon, several residents questioned the number of roos on the course and were concerned about the ‘moving on’ practice being undertaken. Other residents told the Sun City News, they had tried to contact the SCCC but could never get to speak to anyone about their concerns. A small mob of roos seem to be trapped outside the fence line in the St Andrews Park, creating issues with people walking their dogs off leads and passing traffic. Most people agree the SCCC should open their gates near the park and muster the small group of roos to safety on the golf course, then move them on as part of their management plan - Mr Mitchell told the Sun City News these roos were coming from

Two weeks ago, the Sun City News alerted the community to a vicious dog attack where a small ‘pinky’ kangaroo died. Since this incident the RSPCA has an ongoing investigation and it is understood certain names and addresses have been received.

Many of the accusations are untrue, over exaggerated or suggesting criminal activities; and not helping address the real issues and concerns of most residents in this area.

“The club has a management plan and we are herding up roos and ushering them back into the national park.”

Other roo issues

the new development at Vertex, on the western side of old St Andrews Estate and weren’t their problem. In the past, the SCCC has been criticised for organising mass cull programs within the golf course. The Sun City News understands DPaW, who issue the cull permits, have tightened up their regulations and now prefer management strategies. The Northern Valleys Wildlife Support told the Sun City News: “The mob [of roos] at Sun City Country Club live on the golf course and form an attraction for most golfers, residents and visitors alike. “Following a road traffic accident, where a car crashed into the golf course, Sun City have opted to erect a fence surrounding the golf course on St Andrew’s Drive. This has meant that the kangaroos who were in the housing development at the time the fence was erected, are now trapped there.

“This has unfortunate implications for the resident kangaroo mob. They are now estranged from what was their normal habitat and are residing in the local parkland and on road side verges. “This is further impacted due to ongoing land development to the north and west of their current area and the southern border bound by Yanchep Beach Road and further housing developments. “Effectively these kangaroos are now ‘landlocked’ in a small residential area, which is no place for these gentle, but wild animals.” Member for Butler, John Quigley has contacted the Minister for Environment asking for him to instruct DPaW to ‘get involved’ and find a satisfactory solution, satisfying all parties involved. As more news come to hand the Sun City News will post reports on their Facebook page.

The petition states: “Recently it has been brought to our attention that staff at the Yanchep golf course have been driving the kangaroo’s away from the course (into the surrounding residential area with only a little bit of bush surrounding the course) using tractors/utility vehicles. The kanagroos could have been hit by on coming traffic or may not be able to find a sufficient amount of food on the small amount of bush land they are being forced onto (which will soon be destroyed for more residential houses). We want them to stop harassing the kanagroos and leave them alone, as they stay in the shade during the day away from golfers.” The petition can be found at www.change. org/p/yanchep-golf-course-save-thekangaroos-in-yanchep? If anyone witnessed or has any information about any of the alleged dog attacks or animal cruelty, contact the RSPCA online at www. rspcawa.asn.au or phone 1300 278 3589. RSPCA’s inspectors have the power to seize and prosecute. Penalties can be as a fine of up to $10,000. Sadly, there was a time, not that long ago, when the St Andrew kangaroos were featured as an attraction to the area.

‘Religious cult’ taking over in northern suburbs Maverick Liberal MP Rob Johnson has taken aim at his party, claiming it has done nothing to stop ‘religious cults’ seizing control of the federal division of Moore, in Perth’s northern suburbs. Mr Johnson, whose state pre-selection is in doubt because of his public fallout with Premier Colin Barnett, claimed non-mainstream church groups had completed their take-over the division at its annual general meeting. He said in recent times the division had been overrun with members associated with the ‘Globalheart Church’ in Joondalup and ‘One Church’ in Merriwa, and said they had been encouraged to join by Federal Liberal MP, Ian Goodenough. Mr Goodenough is supporting State Upper House MP, Peter Katsambanis, who is challenging Mr Johnson for preselection in Hillarys. Mr Johnson said the election of church members to key positions confirmed his fears that the division had been infiltrated. “I call them religious cults and what really concerns me is that they are masquerading as Liberals and they are taking over the Liberal Party in the northern suburbs,” he said. “Their power has been increasing and I’m very, very concerned that normal Liberal voters are not aware of what is happening. They have been bombing my branches, particularly the Padbury branch. “Ian Goodenough has signed up people from a religious sect in Quinns Rock and stuck them in my Padbury branch, about 25 kilometres away. “And that’s been done for the pure reason of trying to disenfranchise the absolute democratic right of that branch to take part in the pre-selection for the seat of Hillarys.” Mr Johnson conceded the power shift could have an impact on his preselection, to be decided in April.

He believed the Liberal Party would end up pre-selecting at least three evangelical Christians in Perth’s northern suburbs.

“If they want to run as a so-called Christian group, they should have the guts to do that but they know they won’t get anywhere,” he said. “They won’t win seats as Christian Democrats and so they’ve decided to stand as Liberals. “Now I don’t think that’s completely open and honest.”

being

But Mr Goodenough claimed Mr Johnson had no intention of recontesting Hillarys and had been plotting to install his preferred successor instead. “Mr Johnson is promoting a non-local successor who belongs to a nonChristian religion, that is why religion has become an issue in the first place,” said the federal MP. “Religion, however, has nothing to do with the fact that a non-local successor is not gaining local support.” Mr Goodenough refused to respond to Mr Johnson’s claim that some Liberal MPs were setting up ‘employment bureaus’ for people connected with the Globalheart Church, by employing them in their offices. At the 2013 State Government elections, sectors of these religious groups were handing out ‘how to vote’ cards encouraging the community to support their candidate. The state seat for Butler, Two Rocks and Yanchep was a safe Labor seat, but after the 2013 State Election is is now marginal - with less than a two per cent swing to change hands. Since the election of the Member for Ocean Reef, Albert Jacobs in 2008, the northern corridor has been heavily influenced by these ‘religious cults’. In the 2011 state election, Jan Norberger, another member of this

religious group was Member for Joondalup.

elected

as

Then in 2013, former City of Wanneroo councillor and another member of this church group was elected to Federal Government as the Member for Moore. Behind the scenes, many members from these churches have been employed in various parliamentarians’ office positions establishing an expanding base. Premier Colin Barnett is known to have been frustrated by the ‘religious factor’ and the delays caused to legislation related to abortion, prostitution, etc. As Amanda O’Brien, journalist at The Australian wrote: “After being elected, a god-squad of devout Liberals preaching morality and Christian values in a parliament better known for misconduct and lewd behaviour is shaping as a new force in West Australian politics.”

Council connection The Sun City News is aware members of these religious groups have representatives in both the City of Wanneroo and City of Joondalup councils. Only about 12 months ago, Globalheart Church made presentations to the Mayor of Wanneroo, Tracey Roberts, and the Mayor of Joondalup, Troy Pickard during a special service. Both Ms Roberts and Mr Pickard have been touted as possible future state politicians. All politicians at any level of government, current and future, need to be honourable proud Christians and openly declare their position before using their religious following to secure their political careers. Hostilities have flared up within the Liberal Party with accusations of evangelical Christian church members muscling in.

Mineral sands project reaches major milestone Mineral sands Exploration Company, Image Resources NL, has reached a major milestone in the development of its Boonanarring project North West of Gingin with the signing of an agreement with Murray Zircon and its parent Orient Zirconic. Following shareholder approval, the agreement will fast track development of the high grade Boonanarring deposit, which is projected to have a ten year mine life. With shareholder and regulatory approval due in the next three months, Image expects the project will create significant job opportunities for Gingin and surrounding areas. Once work is ready to start and job opportunities become available they will be advertised locally. The Minister for Environment granted environmental approval for the project in 2014. On completion of mining the land will be returned to pasture and the landscape rehabilitated.

Image CEO, Collis Thorp, said: “The agreement with Murray Zircon and Orient Zirconic is a significant milestone. When completed, it provides a pathway to achieving production from the Boonanarring project and we look forward to working with Murray Zircon and Orient Zirconic in progressing to that point.” Murray Zircon CEO, Patrick Mutz, said: “Completion of this transaction will see the respective strengths of our companies come together allowing Image to achieve an accelerated, efficient and low cost move to production of high grade, high value mineral sand resource in the heart of Western Australia’s proven mineral sands district.” One of the key elements of the agreement will be the acquisition by Image of a wet concentration plant and ancillary mining and processing equipment from Murray Zircon’s Mindarie project in South Australia, a key step in developing the project.

Dob in a Dealer

Federal Member for Pearce, Christian Porter, welcomed the launch of a new million dollar partnership between the Federal Government and Crime Stoppers Australia to establish a national ‘Dob in a Dealer’ campaign.

New disclosure laws for councils Last week, online reporting of gifts and travel contributions will be mandated throughout the local government sector under new legislation.

A number of local governments have already started listing travel and gift registers online prior to the passage of legislation.

Local Government Minister, Tony Simpson, said the changes to the Local Government Act were another step forward for transparency and accountability for the State’s local government sector.

“I commend these local governments which are leading the charge to improve transparency and accountability and look forward to the whole sector adopting and championing these measures,” the Minister said.

“These new measures will bring local government in Western Australia into the modern age,” Mr Simpson said. “For the first time, elected members and senior staff will be required to disclose gifts and travel contributions within 10 days and for the information to be easily accessible on the council’s website. “The Western Australian community rightly has high expectations when it comes to the conduct of elected members.

The government provided $1 million to fund the national Dob in a Dealer campaign.

“I am pleased this Government is taking steps to ensure members of the community can hold their council to account.”

If you have information about someone who is manufacturing or dealing in ice call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www. crimestoppers.com.au

Previously, the Local Government Act only required disclosures of gifts and contributions to travel in the receiver’s annual return.

Efforts to make local government more transparent were led by City of Vincent Mayor, John Carey, who introduced a motion to improve governance at the last WALGA annual general meeting. His proposed reforms to enhance governance, transparency, accountability and consistency included mandatory reporting of contact with developers, prohibition of donations from developers, and the reporting and publicising of gifts, hospitality and travel. At the time, it was defeated 172 to 46, with Mr Carey saying the City of Perth was the prime mover behind the ‘no’ vote bloc, a movement allegedly given momentum by ousted former deputy mayor, Rob Butler. Mr Carey said he felt completely vindicated that greater accountability

was required but was embarrassed by the City of Perth and WALGA’s overarching role, saying both organisations ‘deserve a kick up the rear’ over their failure to adopt best practice. “It’s quite clear the area needs reform. In the 21st century, with all the online technology that is available, open and accessible transparency is a nobrainer,” Mr Carey said. The City of Vincent mayor said some local governments seemed to be particularly cagey about their travel and made it difficult for ratepayers to scrutinise. WALGA President, Cr Lynne Craigie, said the majority of elected members were aware of and stayed within gift guidelines and took responsibility for disclosures when they were required to. “Clearly, some people need to better understand the provisions around gifts and disclosure,” she said. Due to the long weekend, City of Wanneroo was unavailable for comment, but they have never declared how they voted at the WALGA annual general meeting.

Cultural creativity

Free community event The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence, is on Friday 18 March, the local Leyland Mixed Martial Arts Academy is holding a free come along and try day on Sunday 20 March, between 10.00am and 12noon.

Students at Two Rocks Primary School have recently dug deep into the cultural roots of both Indigenous Australia and China.

The free session will allows children to learn the some basic skills which may help them if approached by bullies.

The school grounds are spread with symbolism of Aboriginal and Chinese cultural traditions, ceremonies and stories from eras long ago.

This activity is organised so that parents and children can share their stories and improve the fight against bullying. The martial arts academy is located at 4 Stevenage Street, Yanchep.

In acknowledgment of our country’s traditional ownership, students spent hours collaboratively creating ‘Painted Poles’ and ‘Stepping Stones’ that integrate beliefs and values passed down to new generations through Dreamtime stories.

Cockman House a finalist

Students researched techniques and styles of art from different regions of Australia and applied their knowledge to the artwork they created. This project allowed students to gain a deep knowledge and sense of wonder, curiosity and respect for places, people, cultures, events, ideas and environments. Art specialist, Renae Herron, said: “Students explored elements and principles of design whilst using critical thinking skills when analysing meaning and symbolism of traditional Aboriginal Art.

“It was pleasurable to watch our students from PP through to Year six thoroughly enjoy their learning in such a creative way.” To welcome the Year of the Monkey, LOTE teacher, Susan Croker, invited students to join her on a learning journey about the customs, traditions and legends of the Chinese New Year.

Students in years one through to six made pork pumplings to support their learning. Art Teachers, Corinna King and Kate Wagstaff integrated aspects of Chinese culture into the schools art program, facilitating the student’s production of Chinese Money Trees, wax-resist dragons, cherry blossom paintings and paper plate dragons.

Wanneroo’s Cockman House is a finalist in the 2016 Western Australian Heritage Awards. Cockman House is the oldest remaining residence in the City of Wanneroo, it was built by James Cockman and finished in 1860 and is listed on the State Heritage Register.

Security around the home New laws are now in place that impose tougher penalties on home burglaries, but crooks are always motivated by easy targets.

You can help police make it tougher for crooks by being aware and making small changes to how to secure your home.  Keep doors and windows locked at all times.  Keep valuable items such as computers, laptops, tablets, game consoles, stereos and mobile phones out of sight.  Do not leave spare keys hidden outside, leave them with a trusted neighbour, friend or relative.  Keep trees and shrubs trimmed to reduce the opportunity for burglars to hide and increase visibility from the street.  Be mindful of posting information about yourself on social media. Saying you are on holiday suggests you aren’t home.  Activate your alarm when leaving your home unattended.

 If you’re on holidays, arrange for mail to be held by Australia Post or collected daily by someone while you are away.  Install motion sensor lights to the exterior of your property. Destroy boxes from any new appliances you have purchased so they are not on display for potential burglars to see. Crime is becoming a real concern in Perth with many factors increasing the amount and severity of crimes. More and more people are thinking about security in their homes and how they can make it more difficult for the opportunist burglar. Simple things like not leaving your garage open or having a dog are a great help in the fight against burglaries. Going one step further by installing alarms, security doors and screens, security film and a safe really make it ‘too hard’ for the opportunist burglar. KNA Security are respected local

a well security

company and have secured 1000‘s of Perth homes, with police licenced security consultants they have the knowledge and experience to advise on home and business security. They specialise in rated security doors, security window screens, locksmith services, window tinting, security film, safes and roller shutters.

Licenced by the WA Police with a new showroom in Clarkson they are the number one choice in the northern suburbs. All of the alert pendants work wherever a mobile phone would work. That makes them ideal for active or independent seniors who want the availability of emergency assistance with the push of a button.

This is a family owned and run business using WA made quality products, competitive prices and above all a non pushy sales approach with good old fashioned service as their recipe for success.

Personal Security

A Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) is capable of providing two-way communication over the cell phone network.

All Mobile Alerts are capable of providing their GPS location to emergency contacts or people chosen by and known to the user of the device. Mobile Alerts are smaller, lighter and simple to use.

With the fall detector models, an alert is automatically sent to your emergency contacts advising them that you have fallen, they also show your location. Mobile Alert provide you peace of mind.

REVIEW WEIVER MUSIC

BOOK The Sea Detective There comes a time when a novel raises the bar for a particular genre, and Mark Douglas-Home’s debut The Sea Detective does just that for Scottish crime fiction. Elegantly written and compelling, it introduces a new, thoroughly modern hero into the crime-fighting canon. Cal McGill is a PhD oceanography student with more than a passing interest in the debris found floating on the world’s oceans. His interest in flotsam and jetsam leads him down several roads of discovery, from smashing an international paedophile ring to solving the mystery of his grandfather’s death during the Second World War. McGill is in no way a detective, a fact that makes his character all the more endearing. He is a normal man complete with flaws that come to light in his fraught relationship with his ex-wife, and is driven by both professional curiosity and personal passion.

Synthia The Jezabels return with their third album, Synthia - Armed with a new arsenal of synthesisers, the Sydney quartet funneled their new found sense of momentum into eleven swirling tracks. Each boldly cinematic and pulsating, anchored by Hayley’s commanding delivery.

In the midst of campaigning to bring polluters to justice, McGill is approached by Basanti, a young girl taken from her native Bengal and held captive

by a paedophile ring in Scotland, who asks him to find out who murdered her companion, Preeti. Assisting McGill is the intellectually brilliant but socially awkward DC Helen Jamieson, who rebels against her egoistical boss DI David Ryan in order to help McGill in his search for Preeti’s killers. The novel moves effortlessly between Bengal and Scotland, keeping the narrative fast-paced but without losing any sense of intimacy. McGill’s investigation into his grandfather’s death in the Second World War runs alongside the thread of international wrongdoing; his emotional ties to Scottish history and culture call into question just how much history can be trusted, and how much family matters. Douglas-Home’s style is calm one moment and impassioned and stormy the next, like the ocean itself. His subject matter is diligently researched and is convincingly realistic, especially in showing Cal’s technological competence, which is the key to much of his success. But this isn’t at the expense of neglecting a deeper examination of trust, guilt and prejudice.

The final twists of the novel satisfy the craving for a suitable ending, serving notice that this is one Scottish crime writer to watch.

DVD Bridge of Spies - entertaining

The Jezabels are an Australian indie rock band formed in Sydney in 2007. They consist of Nik Kaloper on drums, Samuel Lockwood on lead guitar, Hayley Mary, also known as Hayley Frances McGlone, on lead vocals, and Heather Shannon on piano and keyboard. They have described their genre as ‘intensindie’ but later said that this was just a joke that they put up on a social networking site, though people took them seriously. The Jezabels’ scheduled world tour has been cancelled until further notice due to the health of keyboardist, Heather Shannon, and the decision by the group not to tour without the full band.

Bridge of Spies is a American historical drama-thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg. The film stars Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan, and Alan Alda.

Three years ago Heather was diagnosed with a unique type of ovarian cancer. Although she has been able to maintain life as usual generally, between treatments, the time has come for her to undergo further immediate treatment.

Bridge of Spies is inspired by the true story of an insurance lawyer, James Donovan, who became the unlikely go-between in an exchange of prisoners between the U.S. and Soviet governments in 1957.

Donovan (Tom Hanks), a genially greying father of three, is nominated as Abel’s defence lawyer following his capture. The film’s title refers to the span across the Havel River between American West Berlin and Potsdam, where captured spies were habitually traded during the Cold War. But it’s also about the metaphorical bridge that Donovan has

to build from a precarious combination of compromise, bluff and rhetoric, as he negotiates with various go-betweens, often under pretences both sides know to be false for the sake of saving face. Spielberg makes a deliberately uneasy mis-match that keeps the entire film on its guard.

Know your local RSL The first ANZAC Day service held in the region was a gathering of ex-servicemen in the car park behind the Two Rocks Tavern in 1977. Three months later, the Yanchep Two Rocks Sub Branch was formed follow the success of the ANZAC Day service. By early 1979, the local Sub Branch wanted to establish a permanent War Memorial - After extensive research and the driving force of Les Neave, it was to be built by members of the Sub Branch in the Memorial Garden at the Yanchep National Park, in front of the Yanchep Inn. This site was chosen because it was on the old Geraldton to Perth stock route where many stockmen and drovers watered their cattle and camped overnight on the banks of what was known as Lake McNess. Many of these men, no doubt, enlisted in the services in both

world wars and many paid the supreme sacrifice. During World War II, the Yanchep Inn became the base for the No 4 Convalescent Unit with Gloucester Lodge being the headquarters for the RAAF No 227 Radar Unit. The Memorial was completed and dedicated on Armistice Day, 11 November 1979, with the War Graves Commission donating the Bronze Memorial Plaque. The Yanchep Two Rocks RSL holds their monthly meeting at the Yanchep Sports and Social Club premises with numerous memorial services throughout the year, held either in the National Park or at the Sports Club. Local RSL branches are breathing life into its grassroots branches and working to support damaged veterans, both young and old.

Yanchep Two Rocks RSL is no exception, and they are looking for new members and welcome all visitors to their monthly meetings and social activities.

You do not need to have served in the military forces, affiliate membership is open to anyone over the age of 18 years old.

Local help for the needy The ‘Friend in Need’ program helps about 20 to 30 local families every week by providing food hampers through the Yanchep Community Centre. This much appreciated service is supplied by i60 Community Services Inc, which is the community arm of the One Church. i60 Community Services is a seperately incorporated nonprofit organisation that exists to bring light into the dark places of life through a range of community service programs. i60 Community Services runs community based courses including: One Surf School, Paddle Gym, Friend in Need, Brighton Moonlight Markets, creative holiday workshops and healthy relationship courses, to mention a few.

i60 Community Services CEO, Trish Botha, said: “i60 Community Services was started as a desire to meet the needs felt in our new and fast growing community. “We have existed to respond to the needs that we hear first hand coming from marriage, homes, school yards and sporting clubs. “Our passion is to continue building into our families to establish a healthy and vibrant community that future generations will enjoy.” If you want more information about i60 Community Services or the local Friend in Need program, call Carolyn Edwards on 0435 838 703, or the office on 9562 3002.

Redhawks to swoop, soar and fly all be hurting after the loss and will be more determined to achieve the ultimate prize at the end of this season. The coaching staff intends to endeavour to promote local talent wherever possible this season and this fact should encourage local players strive harder to earn and keep their place in the side each week.

Dennis Heaney With the beginning of the WAAFL football season only a matter of weeks away, the Yanchep Redhawks preseason, both on and off the field is well underway. Over the summer break, Phil Smeeton was elected as president and a number of procedural changes have been made to enable more people to become actively involved and thereby perhaps reducing the committee as it had been structured previously.

Although last season, the club’s first in the ranks of the amateur league was an outstanding success finishing third, there is a fierce determination to improve on that finish, particularly as the team finished in second place at the end of the qualifying games and lost both final round matches to be eliminated after a preliminary final loss. However, the silver lining that experienced coach, Michael Sutherland, can carry into this season is that the players will

The first scratch match of the season will be played against the Alkimos Seahawks at Leatherback Park, Alkimos Beach on Sunday 20 March, starting at 2.00pm. This game will give both clubs an opportunity to assess where they are at in readiness for the forthcoming season and the match will be followed by a BBQ and a few beers. Looking to the future raises the possibility that this match could in the future become the north suburban derby between two clubs in adjoining suburbs both using a hawk as their emblem. The third and by no means

least important arm of any successful football club is their supporters and families. While families and supporters willingly give their time and support to the players to get them onto the ground each week, they can also use the after game get-together to get to know other people in their own and surrounding areas as well as making what often turn out to be lifelong friends. In this regard set out below is a brief summary of events taking place over the next few weeks.  Sunday 13 March - Players and members registration day, comprising a friendly cricket match at St Andrews Park starting at 11.00am with a BBQ at completion of the game.  Sunday 20 March - Scratch match against Alkimos Seahawks at Leatherback Park, Alkimos Beach at 2.00pm.BBQ and drinks after match.  Saturday 2 April - Jumper Presentation Night at Two Rocks Tavern. Drinks on arrival,

dinner and entertainment, tickets $40pp. Contact Sam Smeeton on 0407 149 640 or email: smeeton@iinet.net.au  Saturday 9 April - First game of season. WAAFL fixtures not yet available, The Sun City News will keep you informed of details as soon as they become available. In other Redhawks news, the club recently announced the retirement of their long serving treasurer, Damian Price, and installation of a new treasurer, Pippa Leonhardt. Damian had held the position for approximately 15 years which was an extraordinary length of service as a volunteer. Whilst Damian will no longer manage the Club’s finances, he will continue to umpire and of course support the mighty Redhawks. Club president, Phil Smeeton, thanked Damian for his outstanding and exemplary contribution to the Redhawks for many years.
