WA’s first ambassador Year 4 Two Rocks Primary School student, Ajay McCarthy, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two years ago. Now nine years old, Ajay would do just about anything to get his freedom back.

It has been a time of huge adjustment for his family too, with his mother Monika taking three months off work to get her head around the demands of blood sugar checks and insulin injections.

“It’s a constant worry and a hidden disease because it often doesn’t show any physical signs,” Ms McCarthy said.

Ajay said he was keen to be part of the event because he wanted to help make a difference for people with diabetes.

“It’s also heartbreaking as parents to watch Ajay because he hates it and doesn’t want to do all the things he has to do to control it but if he didn’t do them, he wouldn’t be here.”

“It’s been really hard for me and my family and I want people to know about diabetes because I’d really like to get rid of it and not have to worry about checking my blood sugar levels all the time and taking insulin,” he said.

Ajay has become the first Diabetes Research WA’s ambassador for this year’s ‘Convicts for a Cause’ cocktail fundraiser and auction at Fremantle Prison. The event on Saturday 7 November, a week before World Diabetes Day will see dozens of community members double as inmates, each raising a minimum $500 bounty for charity.

Diabetes Research WA executive director, Sherl Westlund, said the group needed community support to help researchers find cures for all forms of diabetes. This Friday, Two Rocks Primary School is holding a ‘Blue Dress Day’ to help Ajay raise funds for Diabetes Research.

Rare astronomical event Supermoons occur when the moon comes closer than 360,000 kilometres from the Earth.

Next Tuesday, 27 October, a spectacular rising supermoon will be face-to-face with the setting sun. The sun and moon will be touching opposite horizons. Only in Western Australia will the timing be so perfect. The enormous pale disk of the moon will be touching the Darling scarp while the bright red disk of the sun will be touching the Indian Ocean horizon. This rare astronomical event, uniquely visible from the top of the Leaning Tower of Gingin from 6.25pm to 6.36pm on Tuesday, will mark the launch of Australia’s biggest astronomy education facility. Comets brought life to the Earth. From the Leaning Tower of Gingin a simulated cometary impact will mark the birth of the astronomy education facility.

Like real comets, it will leave a trail of white cloud as it crashes to the ground, and make a significant crater on impact.

This event will mark the launch of Australia’s biggest Astronomy Education Facility consisting of the Gingin’s Gravity Discovery Centre Observatory which features three new state of the art telescopes, the largest public viewing telescope in WA, the Brodie-Hall telescope, plus a cluster of optical and radio telescopes that include the largest optical telescope in Western Australia, operated by UWA, the new Falcon Telescope. US Consul General, Cynthia Griffin, will be present to announce the Falcon Telescope, a robotic telescope developed by the US Air Force Academy for space situational awareness.

The Member for Agricutlural Region, Jim Chown, will open the Facility as the Premier’s representative.

It will be able to monitor natural and manmade space debris, helping to protect the Earth and spacecraft from catastrophic collisions. The telescope will be housed in a dome structure provided by a philanthropic donation by WA’s leading builder, Pindan Constructions.

Assisted by a group of high school students and with other dignitaries they will launch a student-made ‘icy comet’ made of sand, ice and liquid air to match the properties of the comets beyond Pluto.

Invited VIP’s will sip champagne from atop the Leaning Tower, followed by an inspection and viewing with the new telescopes. Further information and bookings gravitycentre.com.au/observatory/ or phone 9575 7577.

Shire of Gingin elections At last weekend’s Shire of Gingin council elections, Ian ‘Sam’ Collard, Frank Peczka, Wayne Fewster, John Elgin, and Jan Court were elected for the next four years. Sam Collard and Jan Court were re-elected, while Robert Kestel was not re-elected. Alan Alderson from Woodridge retired after some 20 years on the Shire of Gingin council.

The new councillors were sworn in at a special meeting held last Tuesday afternoon. David Roe was elected as shire president for the next two years, with Ian ‘Sam’ Collard as deputy shire president. The Shire of Gingin holds their first full council meeting, next Tuesday 27 October, starting at 3.00pm in the chamber at Gingin administration offices.

Finally expenses revealled Back in mid-August, over two months ago, the Sun City News lodged a media enquiry with six questions about Elected Members expenses. On 7 October, a response was provided stating ‘Elected Members operated in accordance with City of Wanneroo policy’. No figures, no details, nothing else was provided. At last week’s City of Wanneroo council meeting, the Sun City News editor, Terry Loftus, submitted the same six questions.

In the minutes from that council meeting detailed answers were supplied, itemising what and how many interstate and international trips each councillor have taken in the past two years. The obvious question has to be ‘Why did the City of Wanneroo provide different answers to the same questions?’ The mayor, some councillors and some administration officers whine about the Sun City News ‘havin’ a go’ at the council and the City of Wanneroo.

It is obvious the City of Wanneroo has preference deals with some organisations, while denying or expect everyone else not to raise issues or community concerns. The City of Wanneroo for many years prided itself as being ‘fully open and accountable’; on recent experience it would be difficult say the council follows the same policy. Often the mayor and some councillors can be heard spruiking their ‘openness and accountability’, but the Sun City

News is aware some councillors are shocked to hear about the way this matter was handled.

Currently the Sun City News has a couple of other City of Wanneroo issues being investigated, as more details are received, we will publish them.

Under the previous mayor, all correspondence with all media was approved by the mayor and the chief executive officer, together - These days it appears only the CEO signs off on media releases.

Withdrawn

A lengthy complex article about the proposed new Lancelin Caravan park which has mixed views in the local community has been withdrawn at the last minute for further legal advice and clarification.

The City of Wanneroo don’t appear to have any guidelines or policy about handling media enquiries, let alone full accountability of the facts.

Council trip details Over the past two years, Mayor Tracy Roberts has taken nine interstate trip to six different capital cities across Australia. The total cost of these trips was not supplied. Central Ward councillor, Frank Cvitan, who was reelected last weekend by the slim margin of 18 votes has taken four interstate trips - Gold Coast, Hobart, Melbourne and Darwin. North Ward councillor, Linda Aitken, has taken two trip in the past 12 months Adelaide and Darwin. Councillors, Dot Newton, Glynis Parker and Brett Treby had one trip each. Councillors Robert ‘Bob’ Smithson, Damien Zappa and Hugh Nguyen, along with an unknown number of council staff went on a Local Government Planners Association European Study Tour in May, this year. The cost of these 21 interstate and international trip is unknown, additionally it is unknown how many City of Wanneroo staff travelled on these trips. Without doubt each trip would have taken in at least two days, overnight accommodation, taxis, meals, conference fees and general expenses for each councillor and staff member.

The mayor and councillors are not required to provide any report or details of the outcomes from these trips. Some of the trips taken are dubious at the least and highly questionable. For example, seven of the trips were Local Government Management Association organised - This organisation is set up as a professional association representing managers and aspiring managers in local government, not mayors or elected councillors. The European trip was organised by another professional body set up to represent ‘views and interests of the profession’ - Planners. Of the three councillors who attended the trip earlier this year, Robert ‘Bob’ Smithson failed to get re-elected at last week’s council elections. Equally, the Sun City News has been unable to locate any report on or about this expensive trip. The Sun City News understand this trip cost the council over $40,000. During 2014/15 financial year the City of Wanneroo spent over $55,000 on catering services for the mayor and elected councillors - No details were provided separating food and alcohol.

On social functions such as ‘community appreciation’ events, the City of Wanneroo spent nearly $30,000 to host these functions. These mayoral and councillor perks are on top of their monthly remunerations of close to $50,000 per month. To say the City of Wanneroo council is costing its residents and ratepayers over one million dollars a year would not be an understatement.

Is it value?

The concern is: ‘Is it value for money?’ No one objects to paying for educated, responsible and financially prudent decision-making, but unfortunately personal projects, religion and politics seem to play a major role in to many instances. Will we see any improvement over the next four years, can the mayor be the leader she is elected to be? Only time will tell. If we could be fully assured the mayor and all elected councillors put what is best for the City of Wanneroo and their ward ahead of their own personal feelings and agendas, how different the wider community would reflect on the council’s performance.

Your letters and emails Heartless

In late September in broad daylight, I arrived home to find my home totally ransacked, money, jewellery completely gone, doors smashed, locked busted. I went to the police at about 3.45pm and was told we close at 4.00pm - Honestly how heartless, who do we turn to for help and reassurance? Forensic came the next morning. Very scared Yanchep resident. (Name and address supplied)

Vale Ray Krakouer It was so sad to hear yet another character of Two Rocks passed away recently. I first met Ray in the Writers Group in Yanchep and he always amused us all with his risque jokes and entertaining writing. He and Maggie became good friends, acting in many skits and plays we performed. Days at Paulette’s home were filled with fun when Ray was there. He never missed an Anzac Day march until he was physically unable, and was very proud to have served his country. His job of ‘guarding’ the wreck of the Alkimos resulted in a hilarious book full of stories and legends about the ‘ghost’ he saw. A good read in Ray’s simple way of writing to entertain.

Learning to play the piano, and painting were his loves and his caricatures are widespread.

Originally painting on old beer cartons, with our help he took on canvasses with fine results. I’m lucky to own several of his works. In his latter years, Ray could be seen around Yanchep in his little scooter, and he will be sadly missed around town by his many friends. He was a pioneer of the area, there are few who could tell tales of early Yanchep/Two Rocks, and that is a real loss to our community, especially all the ladies. Vale Ray Krakouer, my friend. Suzi Logue, Two Rocks.

Proactivity works I would like to respond to email posted about the blitz on the long weekend - Prevention is better than a cure. The quiet long weekend was fantastic, forewarned blitzes should occur more often. They keep our neighborhood quiet, our kids safe and rule and law touters in line. This is going to prevent antisocial and irresponsible behaviour in our community, educating visitors of the town’s expectations and possibly save lives. Alex Worley, via email.

Rape of our countryside and habitat No doubt all residents in our northern suburbs have witnessed the blanket removal of our flora and fauna through the so called development of land for housing. Whilst we must have progress as it’s called the effect on the living conditions of those near to these developments has deteriorated to such an extent that people cannot leave windows and door open and any facilities outdoors have become uninhabitable. There is no control by local councils where dust generated by land developers is allowed to flourish. Surely our local government bodies need to have in place legislations as to what needs to be done to maintain both the natural topography of our land, flora and fauna included. Whole hillsides have been removed and land levelled so that the prevailing winds create havoc for residents who live nearby. It would seem developers have an open book to do as they please. If a resident wishes to make changes around their property the many by-laws they have to comply with are numerous. Those elected to our council need to be aware of the problems they need to confront. Anthony and Margaret Collins, Yanchep.

MORE your letters and emails Heliport response In the interests of clarity, a number of residents attended the Shire of Gingin council meeting on 15 September, several of whom asked questions during the open session prior to the main council meeting. Therefore these questions would not have been listed on the agenda as they did not form part of, or appertain to, any of the scheduled items. At no point were the merits, or otherwise, of any individual

planning application raised by me at this meeting. The questions asked were concerned entirely with the handling of the advertising and notification of the public with regard to Planning Applications made to the Shire, particularly those that might have an impact upon the wider community. Concerns were raised as to the information given out to enquirers at the Council offices, the information contained in the statutory

Online chatter Snakes seen in Capricorn Blvd, the weather’s warming up, so they are on the move.  Pedestrians be aware if crossing at the new traffic lights on Marmion Ave/ Lagoon Drive intersection, they don’t give you a lot of time to cross before changing.  Idiots dragged the car park sign from, sales office opposite Wilkie Park into the middle of the road at 1.40 in the morning.  Group of males threatenting people around Zamia tennis court. Police were contacted.

 Police asking for witnesses to the incident in front of Flight Centre Yanchep - 0475 803 714 if you have any information.  Yanchep residents unite in search after Facebook alert for missing children. Children found safe and well.  City of Wanneroo are a bunch of muppets!  I use the rail and am grateful to have the station at butler to use but please, please dual carriageway to Butler and freeway up here to Yanchep, so bad now at peak hour.

advertising in general and the length of time allowed for members of the public to make submissions. Concerns were raised that applications should contain sufficient information with regard to any proposal, to allow both residents and councillors an accurate overview as to the full extent of what was being applied for. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the councillors and officers of the Shire of Gingin for their

courtesy in listening to our concerns and their prompt and immediate action over these, which included the re-advertising of the application for a helicopter landing site and hanger, with commencement of commercial flight operation (published in Sun City News on 8 October) which also included an extension of the time allowed for making submissions on this to 23 October. Kate Lane, Neergabby.

From the editor’s desk The turnout of voters at the recent Local Government elections was appalling, only one person in five bothered to lodge their vote across the entire City of Wanneroo. Shire of Gingin voting was fractionally better, but down on the last shire election. There is no way anyone can whinge or complain about what the local council does or doesn’t do - It takes a pro-active community to keep their council informed, proactive and working for the community. As one person commented to me “As long as they keep focused on the real needs of the community everyone will be happy, yes, that will

mean being more out of their offices than in.” I think it’s important ward councillors stay in touch with the entire community and not just selected minimalist single focus groups. Council administration and elected members need to find better ways to engage with and to the community, not think they are always right and the community shouldn’t be informed. Will it happen? My guess: No, the community will need to revolt first and shake the tree and demand the service they deserve. Let’s see what happens!

Book launch One person critical, two others injured in serious Ledge Point crash Three years ago, Lancelin resident, Kym Illman, had never set foot in Africa. Recently he and his wife Tonya, launched their 204 page wildlife photo book, ‘Africa on Safari’ in London to much acclaim.

On Friday 23 October, they will holding the one and only Australian launch at the Lancelin Beach Hotel. The pair spent more than 26 weeks over two and a half years, photographing wildlife in six countries. What stands this book out from other wildlife books is the range of images and the unusual angles. The pair used a number of unconventional photography methods including cameras buried at water holes, mounted on remote controlled buggies and on small quadcopters. By getting low and using wide angle lenses, the resultant shots draw the viewer into the scene. The shots from overhead using the quad copter also provide a different perspective. Kym’s wife Tonya had tried unsuccessfully to get Kym to go on a safari for the best part of 20 years. After he finally conceding on a first safari in 2012, he became a devotee, booking the pair’s second safari the moment they returned from their first. In total they shot more than 250,000 images and stayed at 34 different camps. Their total indulgence in the project captured the attention of niche UK publisher, Papadakis Publisher, who took the book on and then sold the German language rights to National Geographic. Entry to the launch on Friday night, 6.00pm to 8pm at Lancelin Beach Hotel is free. The book is available through www.kymillman.com/AOS

Three people were seriously injured after a crash on Ledge Point Road in Ledge Point, last Monday morning. Three ambulances, five fire crews and police attended the scene on Ledge Point Road near Indian Ocean Drive after two cars collided, trapping two people. Fire crews from Gingin, Lancelin and Yanchep worked to free the people trapped. It took over an hour to free both people. A St John Ambulance spokesman said one patient was being taken to hospital

under priority one and two others are being treated at the scene. One of the crash victims, a man believed to be in

his 50s, is in a serious but stable condition.

In another accident, a car finished up in the bush off Two Rocks Road.

Think of others when parking but commonsense is needed to ensure your car and boat trailer does not impede the roadway through the marina parking area. This is one of four photos supplied to the Sun City News, other photos clearly show car and trailer number plates - Some people will suggest they should be ‘named and shamed’.

The Department of Transport has spent tens of thousands of dollars improving the boat parking area at Two Rocks

marina and boat ramp area, but some people are simply inconsiderate and ignoring the new parking areas.

The Two Rocks recreation boat ramp is always busy when the weather conditions are ideal for going fishing,

Superfast broadband in sight Last week, Federal Member for Pearce, Christian Porter, said that across Australia the NBN is powering ahead, with the recent release of a comprehensive construction plan to network 9.5 million premises nationwide. Across the Pearce region, approximately 47,760 residents will benefit from NBN fixed line upgrades in areas including Yanchep and Two Rocks by mid-2017; with Woodridge, Gabbadah, Guilderton, Seabird, Ledge Point and Lancelin by September 2016. More than 80 per cent of WA homes will have the NBN by mid-2018. Though the recently released NBN list gives certainty to most people, an estimated 200,000 WA homes are not included, with some suburbs set not to get the rollout until between September 2018 and the end of 2020.

Still a risk

Half of West Australia’s riskiest roads and intersections remain a danger to motorists, one year after being identified as the state’s most dangerous. Indian Ocean Drive at Lancelin between Perth and Geraldton, remains one of the state’s danger spots. The Minister for Road Safety, Liza Harvey, said $46 million would go towards road safety treatments to address run off road crashes including shoulder widening, audible line edging, wire rope barriers and overtaking lanes.

Pollies support various charities Over the past week, our federal and state politicians have been supporting various charities. Federal Member for Pearce, Christian Porter, found his loudest shirt for ‘Loud Shirt Day’, where funds are raised to help the First Voice centres give deaf children sound and speech. State Member for Butler, John Quigley, attended McDonalds Yanchep and Bulter as part of ‘McHappy Day’ raising funds to help out at the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Register now for Lancelin Classic Registrations are now open to windsurfers, kitesurfers and paddlers to enter the 31st Lancelin Ocean Classic, taking place between January 14 and 17, 2016.

For the first time, the race will also be open to ocean kayaks and stand up paddlers, who will race downwind along the coastline from Ledge Point to Lancelin.

The headline 25km race from Ledge Point to Lancelin Marathon will for the first time have the windsurfers and kitesurfers racing together, utilising an improved starting line process.

In 1986, a group of windsurfing enthusiasts planned a 25km downwinder to race from Ledge Point to Lancelin.

Following the same course and starting together at Ledge Point, the downwind marathon will take place on January 16 from noon and there will be entertainment at the Lancelin beach finish line throughout the afternoon.

Today, the Lancelin Classic is the longest running and Guinness Book of World Records longest race; and is still going strong and has expanded to include kitesurfing and paddling. In the lead up to it’s 31st year, the event will bring together professionals and amateurs

who will fight it out for supremacy and a competitive prize pool across a range of windsurfing, kite-surfing, and paddling events.

This world class event is all about the local community with a family friendly festival showcasing all the region has to offer.

The City of Wanneroo is reminding dog owners that new State Government laws on microchipping and registration come into force on Sunday 1 November 2015. Manager of Community Safety & Emergency Management, Trevor Prentis, said from 1 November dogs older than three months must be microchipped as well as registered. “The new rules will help identify lost dogs and quickly reunite them with their owners, reducing inconvenience and pound costs,” he said.

“Failure to comply with the registration and microchipping requirements under the Western Australia Dog Act 1976 can result in a fine of up to $5,000. The City will accept dog registrations without a microchip number, but owners must provide the number before 1 November to avoid an infringement notice. “The City asks dog owners who are yet to microchip their pet, to take them to a vet as soon as possible. The procedure is quick and costs on average about $70.
