McDonald’s launch new family concept restaurant in Butler Northern suburb residents are the first in Western Australia to experience McDonald’s new Family Concept restaurant with the opening of its Brighton (Butler) store, last Friday. Unlike any other McDonald’s in WA, Family Concept restaurants offer a more varied dining experience with multiple ‘zones’ for different customers creating opportunities for families to spend time together and cater for a range of different ages. Local owner operators, Shanti and Arosha Sivaraj, said they were very excited their newest McDonald’s restaurant was all about catering for the needs of families. “From families with young children through to tweens and teens, the new Family Concept restaurant has zones to keep everyone active and entertained,” Mr Sivaraj said. “This space activation is throughout the restaurant, not just in the play land area. “The zones include Play and Party, Communal, McCafé Retreat, Active Family Zone, Tweens and Teens and Family Amenities.” They feature a newly designed, modern and multi-level play land

with digital play areas; integrated play within the whole dining experience and not just the play land, creating a fun energy in the restaurant; active family zones which provide wet wipes, hand sanitizers and drawing materials; comfortable family rooms including private baby changing facilities, breast feeding chairs, and first aid amenities; and superfast 4G WI-FI and USB charging stations. Mr Sivaraj said family meant many things to different people. “Family is single mothers, grandparents and grandchildren, mum, dad and two children, dad and the kids coming for a treat and tweens and teens. We have something to keep everyone entertained at the Brighton store.” Mr Sivaraj said all members of the public were invited to attend the grand opening celebrations at the store next Saturday 29 November. Families will be treated to face painting, balloons and all of the McDonald’s characters as part of the all-day event. He also said $1 from every Big Mac and coffee sold on the day will be donated to St Vincent de Paul.

This is the third Family Concept restaurant by McDonald’s in Australia, the first opened in Cranbourne in Victoria, in early 2014, with another in Western Australia set to open in December. McDonald’s Brighton is on the corner of Marmion Avenue and Butler Boulevard in Brighton.

Your letters Doorknock I would like to thank all those who contributed to the Dottyback Bend Heart Foundation Doorknock Appeal recently, which collected a total of $105.80. Your fundraising efforts have helped raise an amazing $4.5 million Australiawide, supporting the foundations life saving work. This really is a fantastic result and will help to make even more crucial research into heart disease possible. From the bottom of the Heart Foundations heart, thank you for your continued support. Rudy Menke, Yanchep.

Cowardly attack On Tuesday afternoon my kids witnessed two teenage boys on scooters at Shamrock Park in Two Rocks, mutilating a female Burtons legless lizard with their scooters and laughing about it. We know she was a female because she was carrying eggs which were also destroyed. They left the lizard there laying in pieces, knowing, by their cries of ‘it's still alive!’ as they rode away, that she was still alive and suffering.

I had to put her out of her misery as she lay there gasping for breath, her tiny body severed into pieces. Please teach your children about respecting and caring for animals, especially native species. Teach them that all creatures matter, irrespective of their size or species. Being an animal loving family, my kids were all very disturbed by witnessing this, as was I hearing about it and seeing the animal left in such a way. If these were my kids, I'd be extremely concerned. Name and address supplied.

What a joke the bus service is! Utterly disgusted with the service and even bought an extra car as my wife no longer uses public transport. You cannot get a bus from Ocean Keys Shopping Centre to Yanchep, you have to go to Clarkson Station and change. Really, yes it's true. So you go from Ocean Keys to Clarkson Station and wait 15 minutes, then change,k then go to Butler Station and off you go. Also, there is a bus to Alkimos. But that is as far as it

goes - No bus should just go to Alkimos, it is a waste of resources. Alkimos should be a stop as part of the journey to Yanchep or indeed Two Rocks. The PTA could easily run four services an hour by doing a round trip instead of the one per hour, if you are lucky. It does not take a lot of working out but the bright sparks at the PTA seem to be struggling. A Baker, Yanchep.

Call not returned My daughter catches the bus to and from Irene McCormack College. My daughter is year 7 and is 12 years old. Instead of catching a direct bus to school and home, she now has to get off at Butler station to catch another bus, and also has to pay twice Previously she would pay once. This bus trip home now takes an extra 20-30 minutes depending on her getting out of school directly on the siren. I really don't like the idea of her getting off at Butler There are too many kids from different schools and too many weirdos about. I really think that there are enough school children from

schools like Irene's, Alkimos, Quinns to fill a bus or two that can come direct up to Yanchep without stopping at Butler. I contacted Transperth about my concerns and was told I would receive a call back, but I have not - That was a few weeks ago. Linda Corcoran, Yanchep.

Bus safety I am seeing too many security vehicles following Transperth buses around Butler, Yanchep and Two Rocks. What does it say about our community - Is it that unsafe to travel on public transport? School children are being forced to travel on the general bus service, costing parents more, taking longer to get to and from school, all in the name of ‘progress’. The State Government should be ashamed that they are forcing our school children to travel on a bus service that isn’t safe. It is time the community spoke out and organisation like the Residents Association did something worthwhile for the community. Name and address supplied.

Violence in school rising Earlier this month, there was an ugly incident at Yanchep District High School with a Year 8 student being threatened with a knife.

“I worry about children being frightened and blackmailed at Yanchep DHS, because there is so much drug in that school.

Several parents and students have confirmed that bullying at Yanchep DHS especially between the Year 9s and 8s has been a problem for most of the year.

As a community member, I want Yanchep DHS cleaned up, the bullies expelled.”

The recent incident saw the school go into ‘lockdown mode’ and police called to the incident. Police took away a Year 9 student and questioned him about a knife and drugs found in his possession. The Sun City News understands the Year 9 student was suspended for ten days and then allowed to return to school. The student targeted in the attack has not returned to Yanchep DHS and is relocating to another school. The Sun City News is aware that another student in the Year 9 gang already has had a restraining order imposed against him. One parent said: “The Education Department under a Duty of Care is supposed to provide a safe environment for our children to learn. I wouldn’t call this a safe environment.

Yanchep DHS principal, Alan Curtis told the Sun City News: “The situation was defused thanks to the quick thinking of other students and school staff and the knife was confiscated calmly, but the student later became agitated again and threatened staff. “Police attended and apprehended the student, who was also suspended from school. “Thankfully no one was hurt physically and our school psychologist spoke immediately with the small number of students directly affected by the incident. “In terms of the suspended student, we have planned further support for their return to school to help manage and moderate their behaviour.” Violence in schools continues to increase - 27 per cent of students aged four to nine are bullied at least every few weeks. In 87 per cent of these cases, onlookers are present and do nothing.

Of course, these statistics still do not tell the whole story. The problem becomes more extensive when we consider the impact on not just the families of the victims, but the families of the perpetrators as well. Violence in schools is a problem that is having an effect on our society as a whole, and if left unchecked it could do long-lasting harm. Studies show that more and more students are coming to school with weapons than ever before - A startling tendency for children to carry knives is being increasingly scrutinised as the rates of stabbings soar. The violence in our school system must be dealt with sooner rather than later. As the assault rates and bullying continue to draw headlines

across the country, it is imperative that we work toward a solution that gets to the heart of the problem, quickly. Recent figures from the Australian Drug Foundation show that 40 per cent of 12 to 17 year olds are regularly using drugs and/or alcohol. Seventeen percent have tried inhalants, 14.8 per cent have tried cannabis, three per cent using hallucinogens, 2.9 per cent using amphetamines, 2.7 per cent using ecstacy, two per cent tried steroids with 1.7 per cent using cocaine or heroin.

Crime squad arrest six

After raiding houses in Merriwa, Alkimos and Ridgewood, last week, the WA Gang Crime squad arrested Rebel bikies over an alleged assault - The charges relate to an alleged targeted attack on a 36-year-old male in Ridgewood in September. The man, who is understood to be known to the group, was allegedly struck with baseball bats, then punched and kicked. He sustained a fractured skull, broken leg and broken arm. Police raided 11 properties linked to the gang and arrested seven people including the six alleged members. The men belong to the Clarkson chapter of the Rebels club.

Low-life theft Last Sunday morning, Yanchep Surf Life Saving Club members discovered that a near new rescue boat motor had been stolen from the clubhouse.

Sadly the drug problem across the Perth metro area including Alkimos, Yanchep and Two Rocks is rife.

If anyone knows anything about this theft, please call Yanchep police on 9562 9300 or 131 444.

Long term, alcohol and drugs usage damages the developing brain.

To replace the motor, the club will need to fundraise $5000.

Editorial - Terry Loftus For a small community, growing fast, the need for vital basic family support services is essential. Where are the support services when an incident occurs?

Q&A

How do you like to spend your weekends? No set pattern unless I’m giving a workshop at Capricorn House. Other than that, just pottering around. When you’re retired you can choose which THIS WEEK: Angie Beck Foundation Member of TRYCAN days to have a ‘weekend’. What is your most treasured possession? My mind/brain. Would be lost without it! What would you first save in a house fire? Perhaps my computer and the photos I haven’t scanned yet. What is the last book you read? Just about to get my 902nd book from the Two Rocks Library Just finished reading ‘Giving up the Ghost: a memoir’. I read about four or five books a week, novels and non-fiction. If there is one thing you would change about Australia, what would it be? Nothing is wrong with Australia just some of the people who run it. Who would you invite to dinner? I don’t really ‘do’ dinner – no dining room, table or chairs. So maybe I could invite a homeless person to share a bowl of homemade vegetable soup sitting at a kitchen bench on camp chairs. If I had anything better to offer I would ask Stephen Fry – interesting guy, amusing and intelligent. What was your most embarrassing moment? Can’t remember any – now, that’s embarrassing!

The parents of the victim are devastated, they can’t understand the school’s decision not to expel the attacker, only taking minimal action for such a serious incident.

Having a school lockdown with students and teachers being threatened is extremely serious, but when there is a lack of support services to help people affected by an incident, it is bloody disgraceful.

No one from the school has contacted the victim or his family - Why? What has our society become?

I spoke with the parents of the student who was threatened by another student; and a week after the incident, the student assaulted had not been offered any support from the Education Department or any other government support service What a disgrace!

It's not easy to admit that our children's actions are anything but a direct result of something we've said, done, or taught.

Is the behaviour of our children a direct reflection on the parents?

Children who don’t feel their parents care, will look for alternatives and sadly, they often make the wrong choices.

We appear to be going through a second or third generational change of poor parental care with the ‘she’ll be right’ attitude being common. How many more children are going to become ‘damaged goods’ due to their parents? Then there are those parents who pass their child’s behaviour responsibilities on to the school. So where does the buck stop? Parents need to accept responsibility for their children, schools need to accept a level of responsibility, communities need to set standards and make better communities for all. It really is time for a change or do we want more problems?

Community survey - We have a winner Helen Eccleton of Yanchep was the lucky winner of a brand new iPhone 6 for participating in Yanchep Beach Joint Venture’s (YBJV) 2014 community survey. Helen was one of several hundred local residents that took the time to complete and return the survey by the deadline. YBJV’s Jon Kelly said: “The survey provided us with important information about how the community believed the area should grow and develop.

“The quality of feedback we got from residents was fantastic. We received some very useful information that we will be able to use in determining the local priorities and how we lobby State and the City.” The poor condition of public transport in the area was the number one issue raised by participants. Over 90 per cent of all those who responded expressed their support for a railway line to Yanchep in the near future. Also of concern were a range of issues relating to the quality and

quantity of local infrastructure. Clearly, recent concerns of over the lack of useable public open space and need for more facilities for junior sport impacted the results. Uprising our natural environment got a big tick from locals. Beaches, the golf course and the National Park seen as providing a real benefit to Yanchep Two Rocks residents. However, many also questioned why more had not already been done to provide a more modern surf life saving facility at the Yanchep Lagoon.

Jenny’s battle with cancer Jenny Russell and her family have lived on their catamaran at Two Rocks marina for nearly three years.

different for Jenny and her family now. They all live on a boat, they cherish each other, live a healthy lifestyle, minimise stress, drink fresh green juices, don’t eat much sugar and eat salads daily.

Jenny, a mother of two, knew there was something wrong with her left breast. She had a history of breast cysts but thought this lump might be different so visited her doctor.

“Life is cruisy now,” laughs Jenny, referring to their frequent cruises up and down the Indian Ocean.

He confirmed it needed further investigation and referred her to Osborne Park Hospital for an ultrasound biopsy.

“We’re doing what we love because life is too short to be unhappy.”

To her shock the pathologist refused to carry out the test, stating her lump was only 4.5mm and that he only checked lumps over 10mm.

During the month of October, the RAC, for the first time branded two of their iconic yellow patrol vans pink to support the Cancer Council Pink Ribbon Campaign.

Jenny returned to her doctor who again referred her back for an ultrasound biopsy but for a second time they refused to carry out the test. Undeterred, Jenny insisted there was something wrong and eventually, after a seeing a different specialist who spoke with her doctor, Jenny had the test on her third visit to the hospital. The following day she telephoned her GP for the results and she was referred to the breast clinic at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital for a MRI scan. The news was not good. It was confirmed she had a cancerous tumour and sadly it had grown to 60mm. Before she had the ultrasound biopsy, the tumour was 6mm, but Jenny was warned the test sometimes could cause the tumour to rapidly grow and unfortunately this was the case for Jenny. Within eight days she saw the shape of her breast change and her nipple began to invert, a common sign of a growing tumour.

RAC president, Esme Bowen said: “For every breakdown the pink patrol vans attended during October, we donated $5 to the Cancer Council’s WA Pink Ribbon Campaign.”

However, after further investigation it revealed that the lump or tumour was ‘shadowed’, ie: behind breast tissue and therefore did not show up on the mammogram.

So they grabbed life by the horns, sold their house, bought a catamaran, and moved themselves, their two teenage children, and family dog onto the boat!.

Jenny was given the worst‐case scenario and agreed, if necessary, she would have a mastectomy.

“Peter said I needed to concentrate on resting and getting well and we’d always wanted to live on a boat,” explained Jenny. “It meant I could relax and not have hours of housework to do.”

Just one month after her first visit to her local doctor Jenny had her left breast and 11 nymph nodes removed, three of which had cancer in them, followed by six weeks of chemotherapy. Surprisingly Jenny felt reasonably well during the therapy, if a little tired. So much so she often drove herself to the hospital, as her husband Peter was, and still is, a FIFO worker and wasn’t always around.

By the time she went into theatre, two weeks from the ultrasound biopsy, the lump had grown to 100mm.

It was at this time that Jenny and Peter decided to make some life changing decisions.

This was a big shock to Jenny, as she had been given the all clear after a mammogram just one year before the diagnosis.

They lived in a great house in Trigg but they’d always wanted to live on a boat, they had a small boat they moored at Hillary’s.

Following the chemotherapy, Jenny then had a six week radiotherapy course. This was not quite so pleasant and she did suffer burns, but as she positively stated, “these have all cleared up now.” In October 2013, Jenny went in for reconstructive surgery on her left breast.

Breast cancer affects nearly 15,000 women and around 1235 men each year, the Pink Ribbon campaign is about raising awareness of this disease among all West Australians. Cancer Council's Pink Ribbon program helps to raise awareness about breast cancer, as well as raising funds towards research, education and patient support programs. This year, Cancer Council WA was aiming to raise $740,000 through Pink Ribbon Day, Girls’ Night In and Pink Ribbon fundraisers to help those affected by breast or a gynaecological cancer. Final figures were unavailable at the time the Sun City News published this article.

Nation pauses for Remembrance Day

Flowers have traditionally been laid on graves and monuments in memory of the dead. The red poppy is strongly associated with Remembrance Day.

people and left between nine and 13 million dead, perhaps as many as one third of them with no known grave.

Remembrance Day - 11th November, marked the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914 - 18). Each year Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11:00am on 11 November in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. It was 11:00am on 11 November, 1918, that the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years’ continuous warfare. The Allied armies had driven the German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats

upon them over the proceeding four months. In November, the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted the allied terms of unconditional surrender. The moment hostilities ceased on the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war. This first modern world conflict had brought about the mobilisation of over 70 million

The allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their war dead. In Australia, on the 75th anniversary of the armistice in 1993, Remembrance Day ceremonies again became the focus of national attention. On the day the remains of an unknown Australian soldier, exhumed from a First World War military cemetery in France were ceremonially entombed in the Australian War Memorial. This special ceremony, which struck a chord across the Australian nation reestablished Remembrance Day as a significant day of commemoration.

The poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by Canadian officer, Lieutenant Colonel J M McCrae is a popular recitation. McCrae was a professor of medicine at McGill University before the war. A gunner in the Boer War, he served as medical officer with the first Canadian contingent in the First World War and wrote the poem at the second battle of Ypres in 1915. McCrae was wounded in May 1918 and died three days later. At the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Yanchep Memorial in the Yanchep National Park, students from several schools attended the service. Some of the members of the Yanchep RSL made 700 red poppies and placed them in the memorial garden.

Ward boundary review At last week’s City of Wanneroo council meeting, the council unanimously supported a Discussion Paper to review the ‘Wards and Representation’ at the City. The last review undertaken in June 2006, resulting in the number of wards reduced from seven to four with fourteen councillors and a mayor. In this year’s review four options have been detailed: n Keep current wards and boundaries and adjust number

of councillors per ward. n Keep current wards and number of councillors per ward and adjust ward boundaries. n Change to three wards, adjust ward boundaries. n No wards. It is important that all concerned members of our community read this document closely. Councillors have a direct interest in the outcome of the Ward review - In some cases, it will have a direct influence upon their future on the council.

Being a local councillor is about having equal and good representation for your community and region. The next council elections are scheduled for October 2015, and the new Ward Review should be in place for this election. It is important all residents and ratepayers consider this discussion paper - It will affect your local representation for at least the next eight years.

The students are motivated and engaged, learning songs they know and doing activities that are relevant. The teachers act as facilitators, guiding and modeling rather than instructing. Technique and musical notation are part of the learning process, but they are developed through practical playing rather than rote learning.

Music education has the added benefits of providing students with a creative outlet, while instilling discipline, through practice, and improving selfconfidence and a feeling of self worth.

“Unfortunately, many students don’t engage with music at school, and this is detrimental because a creative life is a good life. There’s also a significant body of research that strongly links participation in music with enhanced academic outcomes.”

IMCC is one of the first schools in Australia to use the Musical Futures approach and has just been made one of the inaugural WA Musical Futures Champion Schools.

IMCC Music Department employs the Music Futures approach to music education, first developed in the UK, to reengage students through classes and activities that are relevant and that the students can identify with and want to do. “The best way to learn music is by making music.” All music classes at IMCC, from the Specialised Music Course classes to the General Music classes, are based around the innovative Musical Futures

As a Champion School, IMCC will continue to drive innovation in music education and to promote, nurture and develop best music education practice, to the great benefit of their students. In a department that is warm and welcoming, it’s no surprise to find students using the music facilities and resources at every recess and lunch to pursue their own musical interests. “The Music Department has an open door policy. No matter their ability, from specialist music

“Our central aim is for our students to have the skills and motivation to continue making music when they leave school, in whatever form that may take. “Our hope is that by getting students actively involved in music and musical activity they will continue to make music long after they have left school, and continue to reap the benefits throughout their lives.” The essential consideration of education at Irene McCormack Catholic College is the dignity of the individual. Community concerns Roundabout Several residents in the St Andrews Estate have expressed concerns about the lack of signage at the new roundabout at the entrance to their estate. The Sun City News approached the City of Wanneroo about this issue - To date a response has not been received.

Fishermans Hollow Visitors and locals who have been frequenting Fishermans Hollow since it was recently reopened have noticed dying trees and grass in the park. The City of Wanneroo told the Sun City News: “The damaged tree located in Fishermans Hollow has been removed. “The tree, a Tamerix, caused the reduced growth of turf beneath its canopy. “As the tree has now been removed, the bare areas will be returfed within the next 14 days.”

Parking problems Parking problems continue at the revamped new road system through the Yanchep Lagoon. On the very first day of ‘summer’ with the temperature reaching 30 degrees for the first time this season, the lagoon was popular, as usual - Many people were complaining that there were less parking areas than previous.

The City of Wanneroo said: “The overall project for the realignment of Brazier Road has provided more parking than was previously available, with on-road and Fisherman's Hollow parking formalised. The northern car park also reopened last week, after being closed during the construction period.”

SCYC opening In early November, the Sun City Yacht Club held their annual open day with the arrival of 40 invited guests, local politicians and guest speaker, Doug Kerr. Mr Kerr spoke about his association with Two Rocks in the 1970’s with the Australia Cup challenge. Mr Kerr encouraged the Sun City Yacht Club to consider the Yachting Australia program that provides a fleet of yachts or Optimisis that can be used for training with the idea of encouraging six to 12 year olds to participate in yachting.

Guilderton Celebration Day

Commodore John Utley said this year’s committee had focused on dinghy sailing and encouraging younger members to get involved. The recent Discover Sailing days had attracted over 50 people to try the sport for the first time. After the official opening, members participated in a sail past and blessing of the fleet.

In late October, the Guilderton Celebration Day saw about 80 people come together to celebrate three projects that are helping to conserve the fragile dunes and Moore River estuary for the future.

Members and guests then enjoyed refreshments, snack and afternoon of entertainment.

Online scams - Victims lose Consumer Protection has issued an alert after many West Australians desperate to get a loan have been duped by online loan scams. In the past twelve months, 13 people have reported losses of more than $25,000 after applying for loans online and then being contacted by scammers. They are told their loan has been approved and asked to pay fees upfront in the belief that they would then receive their approved finance. Commissioner for Consumer Protection Anne Driscoll said some of the scammers are stealing the identity of

legitimate online money lenders, adding to the confusion of consumers. “Many of the victims have had their loan applications from traditional lenders rejected, so have widened their search online with the hope of getting a favourable response,” Ms Driscoll said. “Their delight at finally getting a personal or business loan application approved soon turns to disappointment and anger when they discover that they have been scammed. Money for fees and insurance that they have been asked to pay upfront

have been lost and finance is forthcoming.

no

“These heartless scammers are again targeting people who are in desperate circumstances and in a financial position where they can least afford to lose money. “We recommend consumers only deal with licensed credit providers and ensure they are using official websites and email addresses of these registered companies, rather than replying to what may be a scam email, clicking on links in these emails or clicking on online ads which may take them to fake websites.

“A request to pay fees upfront and transfer the money to overseas bank accounts or by wire transfer services is an indication that the loan offer may be a scam, so be suspicious and get advice from Consumer Protection or ASIC before proceeding.” Further information and advice on scams is available on the WA ScamNet website www.scamnet.wa.gov.au. Consumers can contact WA ScamNet at 1300 30 40 54.

Rachel Walmsley from Moore Catchment Council said: “The day was organised by the Guilderton Community Association, Shire of Gingin and MCC to officially open the new Djena Koorl-ing dune walk trail as part of the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council (NACC)/ Federal Government funded Guilderton North Dune Restoration project, plus acknowledge contributions from Bendigo Bank for a new beach staircase project, and officially unveil new interpretative signage on the Moore River estuary foreshore funded through NACC.” Member for Moore, Shane Love, formally opened the new trail and estuary signage. These projects would not have happened without multi stakeholder collaboration from local residents, Shire of Gingin, WA Departments, Yued community and NACC/Federal Government. The Yanchep Two Rocks Business Network (YTBN) will hold its inaugural networking event at the Yanchep Central Shopping Centre at 6:30pm Wednesday 26 November. The event is free and open to all local businesses that RSVP. The business network is a Yanchep Beach Joint Venture (YBJV) initiative that has grown from feedback provided by a number of local businesses that participated in the small business expo earlier this year. YBJV’s Jon Kelly said: “YBJV believes it is important for the growth and development of local businesses that they get the opportunity to interact at these types of events.

“Networking events allow businesses to not only share their respective knowledge and experience but also allow for informal mentoring and capacity building”. Mr. Kelly added. Mr Kelly agrees that broad based business networks have struggled to survive in the locality over recent years but believes that with the support of YBJV the time was right for such an initiative. David Udy from Digital Presence will be presenting on the reasons why social media is good for your business. Food and drink will be supplied. Further details on the event and booking information can be found on the Business Network’s new Facebook page or you can contact Jon Kelly at jon@ybjv.com.au
