Wanneroo - Rates up 4.2% On Tuesday 8 July, the City of Wanneroo unanimously voted to adopt a $167 million, 2014 -2015 budget with a 4.2 per cent average rise in rates. In the budget overview, employee costs are up $7.495 million or 11.61 per cent; material and contracts up $5.746 million (13.09%); utility charges up $0.206 million (2.60%); and depreciation is up $2.421 million (8.17%). Capital works for 2014/15 totalled $62.696 million with nearly $25 million of carry forward captial projects.

Local projects listed include: $2.997 million for Yanchep District sports facilities; $0.872 million design, documentation and approval for the Yanchep Surf Life Saving Club; $75,000 to design a new Fisherman’s Hollow toilet/changeroom; $0.149 million to lower the Yanchep boardwalk; $0.508 million to redevelop Yanchep Lagoon; $0.389 million Brazier Road beach access; $0.175 million to develop passive open space at Mary Lindsay Homestead; and $0.181 million to install floodlights at St Andrews park.

Roadworks include: $0.5 million to upgrade Marmion Avenue, Lagoon Drive intersection; $1.9 million for stage 2 of the Brazier Road alignment at the lagoon; and $130,000 to construct a bushfire access at the rear of Brazier Road properities. There are various local minor capital works projects scheduled for 2014/15. Rubbish charges will increase, the budget report states the largest single factor being the State Government’s Landfill Levy increase from $28 per

tonne, up to $55 per tonne from 1 January 2015. The rubbish charge is included in the general rates fee. Council agreed to waiver $0.074 million of rate revenue for 25 community groups who have property leased from the City of Wanneroo. Three local groups benefit from this waiver - Yanchep Golf Club, Yanchep Sports Club and Yanchep Surf Life Saving Club. The full budget report is available on the council web site - wanneroo.wa.gov.au.

Councillors praise budget after EDS South Ward councillor, Brett Treby, provided the best insight to the City of Wanneroo’s 2014/14 budget. Cr Treby was first eleted to the City of Wanneroo council in December 1999, and reelected in 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2013. He has a special interest in economic development, strategic planning, land planning reform, active citizenship and representative community engagement. Cr Treby started his budget speech by saying: “What I’d like to do councillors this evening is to present some comments that really demonstrates one significant thing The City of Wanneroo is different; it’s very different from other local governments across the state. “This evening we consider the 2014/15 annual budget for the City and we have been presented with a balanced $167.0m budget. This is a budget delivered in large part through a rate increase of 4.2 per cent which provides the financial resources to continue to underpin the challenges of above trend and sustained residential growth that the City of Wanneroo has experienced for well over the past 15 years.

“Our Growth is substantial and cannot be underestimated; and it requires us to do things that other Councils would simply not contemplate. “Significantly, the result of the Efficiency Dividend Strategy which was supported by council delivers a reduction of around $1.0 millon, with much of these savings passed directly onto ratepayers and allowing us to deliver a reduced rate from those which were advertised. “Wanneroo will, over the next 20 years have to deliver the equivalent of an additional City of Stirling with all its facilities, infrastructure and population over and above our existing community as well as maintain and service our older more established communities. “Or put another way Wanneroo will, in around two years’ time overtake the City of Stirling to be the most populous in this state and will dwarf all others to remain the largest and fastest growing city for decades to come. “In this budget, there are a significant number of large projects that will either be completed or indeed commence in 2014/15. This

includes: the completion of the $5.0 million stage 2 portion of the Flynn Drive realignment and connection to Wanneroo Road; and $1.23 million investment to the Kingsway sporting complex. “Additional, significant new works will include: $1.0 million towards the delivery of the new Koondoola Community Centre; $6.8 millon on the second stage of Lenore Road, and most importantly, nearly $3.0 million towards the much needed Yanchep/ Two Rocks Districts Sports Facilities. “Now while there are the big ticket items that we would expect to see the City deliver, we are also focussed on delivering immediate, meaningful and localised benefits for families throughout our community. “This budget will commence the process of delivering shade sails to playgrounds across the City for the protection of families and children in particular, starting with Appleby Park in Darch. “It will also see us deliver floodlighting to Shevlock Park in Koondoola that will enable greater numbers of children to engage in sporting and community activities, and we

will be investing in more bus shelters and footpaths that will grow the use of public transport and provide safer passage in and around our community.” Cr Treby concluded by saying: “Developing a budget is much more that managing funds on behalf of our ratepayers. It is very much more to do with reflecting their values and aspirations and improving their lifestyles within their local community.” Central Ward councillor, Dianne Guise, said the City of Wanneroo expected the population to exceed 187,000 by June 2015, and the budget reflected rises of 11.5 per cent in income and ten per cent in operating costs compared to 2013/14. North Ward councillor, Linda Aitken, did not speak during the adoption of the budget; while Cr Norm Hewer was was on a ‘Leave of Absence’. Mayor Tracey Roberts said the budget, had been specifically developed to cater for the City’s extraordinary growth, which had galloped ahead of forecasts, while at the same time minimising the impact on ratepayers.

Gingin rates up 7% Last Tuesday afternoon, the Shire of Gingin council adopted their 2014/15 budget. There is an average increase in the general rates of seven per cent with fees and charges increasing by 3.5 per cent. Many properties within the Shire are affected by the Valuer-General assessments, the council adjusted ‘rate-in-the-dollar’ to ensure that the maximum number of properties on the minimum rate did not exceed 50 per cent. The council prepared the budget in accordance with presentations made to councillors at eight Concept Forums between December 2013 and June 2014.

State-of-the-art signs The City of Wanneroo will be the first local government in Western Australia to install stateof-the-art animated electronic Fire Danger Rating (FDR) signs ahead of the upcoming 2014/15 bushfire season. City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said: "These brand new signs will revolutionise the way we inform motorists and residents during emergencies because they provide fast, reliable and accurate information using a familiar medium." The technology was recommended by the Victorian Fire Services Commissioner and Country Fire Authority, where more than 50 signs are operational, for its functionality and popularity with volunteers and community members. The award winning signs are fully automated, solar powered and can be updated remotely by the City of Wanneroo administration or by Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades using computer or smartphone applications. The first two signs will replace existing FDR signs at high traffic areas within the City at the following locations: Corner of Wanneroo Road and Joondalup Drive, Neerabup; and Gnangara Road, Landsdale. Installation of initial signs has been supported by a grant from the State Government's ‘All Western Australians Reducing Emergencies’ (AWARE) program which is administered by the State Emergency Management Committee in Western Australia. The AWARE program is a grant scheme designed to enhance WA's emergency management arrangements by building emergency management capacity.

LOCAL CONVERSATIONS

Editorial Many people will have noticed that the Sun City News, earlier this week, removed two postings from our Facebook page concerning a convicted sex offender who may have been relocated to Yanchep. After extensive phone calls, discussions and consideration, it was decided to remove the postings in an attempt to bring some normality to the wider community. Through various social media outlets, all sorts of assumptions were being made,

Great day On behalf of our members, I would like to thank the local community for attending our International Day on 19 June. Together with visitors from other CWA branches, we all enjoyed the talk on Argentina given by guest speaker, Katherine Freestone, who lived there as a child. Katherine Kyle entertained us with a wonderful repertoire of songs starting with ‘Don’t cry for me Argentina’ and the highlight was her rendition of Shirley Bassey’s song ‘Hey, Big Slender’ with her focus on a certain gentleman much to the amusement of his wife and all the rest of the audience. Other activities included the quiz, a trading stall, and parade by those who were game enough to dress up. This was judged by Mayor Tracey Roberts and CWA state president, Sara Kenny. Four lucky ladies received prizes. I would like to thank all our

and after a lengthy phone conversation with the local police sergeant, we may have been seen as feeding the situation, this was not our intent. The only official spokesperson on sex offender issues is the Department of Corrective Services - The police and media, legally are restricted in what can be said. For that reason, we removed the two postings. However, we do urge residents to sign

the current petition regarding ‘Public Awareness of Sexual Offenders Locations’. This petition will be around for another few weeks so the organiser can get maximum impact when it is presented to WA Parliament in August. Just a reminder for anyone signing the petition, you need to include your full residential address and postcode on the petition for it to be legally counted, PO Boxes are not considered a place of residence.

Appreciation to the City of Wanneroo for their sponsorship.

All that remains is for the poor, neglected, potted plants, rock-bound since 1975, to be re-potted, trimmed, watered. They have survived until today, they deserve succour.

We will most likely do it all again next year when we find out which country will be chosen for us to focus on. Joyce Harris, Yanchep CWA President.

Looking good Cheers to Derek Oldham and his team taking in hand the neglect and desolation of the Two Rocks Shopping Centre and it's surrounds.

Concerned Recently, I went exploring the City of Wanneroo web site, to find such documents as a ‘Strategic Plan’, ‘Corporate business plan’ and a ‘Ten Year Financial Plan.

Successive owners have done nothing of note except to mine the area for rent without the visible expenditure of a dollar.

My concern is, no doubt the council has spent a lot of money creating these documents, then even more reviewing them, but I find it very short on ‘delivery’.

The broken kerbs all put back together, plants replaced, lines redrawn in the parking area - working under a

If the City of Wanneroo was a private business and the elected councillors and senior

directors were ‘members of the board’, they be in trouble for non-performance. How can so much planning and documentation be created when they can’t deliver vital basic infrastructure and service into the new growing northern communities? Just look at anywhere along the coast from Butler north, there isn’t one new sporting facility, not one new community centre or library. All the new parks in these estate have been established by the developers, what has the City of Wanneroo done for the outer northern suburbs? I read recently, the council is about to start collecting ‘Developer Contributions’ to provide these facilities Where have our rates for the past 20 years been spent? I think the City of Wanneroo has to get beyond ‘planning’ and start to deliver some of these essential basic facilities a community needs. Name and address supplied.

New committee elected for the Moore Catchment Council Those elected to the committee included Reg Beale (chair), Tony White (vice chair), Jennifer Bairstow (secretary), Lawrie Short (treasurer), Sarah Mason, John Braid, Kaye Reid and Peter Waterhouse. At a special meeting a new committee for the Moore Catchment Council (MCC) was elected - The aim of the committee is to provide direction for the conservation of the Moore River and its catchment through the services provided by an NRM Officer and an Executive Officer.

Since year 2000, MCC has attracted over $4 million in State and Federal funding programs for local, grass root projects, to build community capacity in conserving the Moore River catchment. The newly elected committee, thanked the past committee members for volunteering their time and effort.

The new committee welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Natural Resources Management, Ken Baston, of $24 million to be spent over three years to continue the State NRM program - This funding is distributed across the state and there is potential for MCC to attract funds into the local area. However, there has still been no communication from the Australian Government about their NRM budget and how funds might be distributed. If you would like to join Moore Catchment Council by

RAP launched Blustery winter conditions did not dampen the atmosphere of warm camaraderie at Guilderton for the launch of the Shire of Gingin’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) on Monday 7 July, as part of NAIDOC Week. The RAP was prepared in consultation with South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council, Heritage Advice Australia, and Yued Noongar elders as part of the Shire of Gingin’s commitment to develop positive social, cultural and economic partnerships within the region under its Strategic Community Plan. In attendance at the ceremony were elders of the Yued Noongar people, the region’s traditional owners, along with representatives from SWALSC, Guilderton community groups, Shire of Gingin councillors and staff, as well as state and federal member of parliament. The ceremony opened with a Welcome to Country by Yued elders, Charlie Shaw and Evelyn Dawson, and a symbolic flag raising was performed by Yued elder, Dennis Jetta and Councillor Alan Alderson.

Shire President, Michael Apsinall, gave the welcome address followed by messages from Christian Porter, Federal Member for Pearce, and Shane Love, Member for Moore. The service concluded with the joint signing of the Reconciliation Action Plan by Cr Aspinall and Mr Shaw. “While the day’s formalities were significant for our Yued friends and stakeholders and the wider Gingin community, it was particularly heartening to have the occasion supported by both a State and Federal politician,” said Cr Aspinall. “Their presence here today has helped confirm the importance of the reconciliation process and we look forward to working with the Yued community as the Shire of Gingin continues to grow.” Guilderton, or ‘Gabbadah’ which translates to ‘mouthful of water’ is a significant historical meeting place for the Yued Noongar people and an area of exceptional natural beauty, and its location provided the perfect setting for formalising a partnership between the traditional

owners and the Shire of Gingin. Photo: (Top) Reconciliation stakeholder representatives. Left: Yued Elder Charlie Shaw and Cr Michael Aspinall

Helping young people into work Young job seekers across the region have access to new incentives and additional financial support to help them move from welfare to work.

“The Job Commitment Bonus rewards young job seekers aged 18-30 who move off income support and stay in work,” he said.

Federal Member for Pearce, Christian Porter, said the Government was targeting financial assistance to help more young Australians get into work, and stay employed.

“Eligible young job seekers who get a job and stay off income support for 12 months can receive a bonus payment of $2,500. These same job seekers can receive an additional bonus of $4,000 if

they stay in work and off income support for a further 12 months, that is, 24 months in total. “The Government also understands that sometimes people need to move to where the work is, so we have introduced the Relocation Assistance to Take Up a Job Programme.

“The Government is also rolling out a revamped ‘Work for the Dole’ programme which allows young Australians to demonstrate the skills and attitudes employers are looking for while giving something back to the community that supports them.” You can find out more at www.employment.gov.au.

Renewed warning about dodgy tradesman Consumer Protection has issued another warning about a rogue tradesman who continues to take substantial deposits from consumers but fails to carry out or complete the work. Christopher Brocklebank of Woodvale, trading as Perth Evaporative Air & Gas Services and Elements ‘Hearth, Wind and Fire’ of Wangara, was due to face trial in the Perth Magistrates Court in early July, on seven charges of breaching the Australian Consumer Law, but failed to appear. Since those charges were laid, Consumer Protection has received a further eleven complaints in the past six months from consumers who have paid a total of $12,100 to Mr Brocklebank and the work has

either not been started or is incomplete. Commissioner for Consumer Protection, Anne Driscoll, is alarmed about Mr Brocklebank’s conduct and his apparent disregard for both his customers and the justice system. “I am concerned that, while he faces charges before a court, Mr Brocklebank continues to take substantial deposits for work associated with his gas and air conditioning businesses and then fails to carry out or complete the work,” Ms Driscoll said. “We again warn consumers not to have any dealings with Mr Brocklebank, or his businesses, given his poor behaviour. We are continuing with our current legal action against him and also

investigating the recent complaints. We urge consumers who have complaints to contact us as soon as possible, if they haven’t already. “This is yet another reminder that paying large deposits, or paying the full amount upfront, for work yet to be carried out is risky business. Consumers should never pay the full amount before work commences, and should pay small deposits only if necessary. Under the Australian Consumer Law, the work must be completed within a reasonable time. “Consumers should take steps to ensure they are dealing with a reputable business with a proven track record before handing over any money – ask for references, inspect previous work carried out and search the internet to see if

positive or negative comments have been posted. Consumers may also consider paying by credit card with the possibility of getting a chargeback if the work is not carried out.” Consumer Protection issued a public warning about Mr Brocklebank and his businesses in June, last year: In June 2012, Mr Brocklebank was prosecuted by the Energy Safety division of the Department of Commerce for carrying out gas fitting work while not holding a certificate of competency or permit authorising him to do the work. He was fined $700 and ordered to pay costs of $650 by the Joondalup Magistrates Court. Consumers who have had recent dealings with Christopher

Brocklebank, Perth Evaporative Air & Gas Services or Elements ‘Hearth, Wind and Fire’ should contact Consumer Protection by calling 1300 30 40 54.

Stores selling dangerous USB chargers identified The Commissioner for Consumer Protection has publicly released a list of 20 stores in WA which have been identified as selling dangerous unapproved USB plug-in chargers and adapters and warns their customers to carry out an urgent safety check. The list included Wotel Wangara at Wanneroo Markets, Mobile Tech at Ocean Keys Shopping Centre, and Accessories World at Kingsway Shopping Centre.

Shire launches survey The Shire of Gingin has launched its first ever Community Perceptions Survey. The primary aim of the survey is to determine current levels of community satisfaction with shire services and facilities, as well as providing an opportunity for residents to have a say in areas they think should be improved or changed. Shire President, Michael Aspinall said: “This survey is part of our continuing commitment to engage our community in decision making processes. We recognise the value in community consultation as we strive to make the Shire of Gingin a better place to live, work and visit, and this is an occasion where residents can supply their honest feedback anonymously.” The Community Perceptions Survey will enable residents to rate certain services and provide the shire with information so that appropriate resources are channelled and distributed to where they are needed. “We want to hear our community’s views and would strongly encourage everyone in the Shire of Gingin to participate in the survey,” Cr Aspinall added. Residents can expect the survey mailed to them in the coming weeks and there will also be an on-line version to complete on the shire’s web site gingin.wa.gov.au, if preferred. The survey closing date is Friday 8 August, 2014, and is open to all Shire of Gingin residents 18 years and over.

Join the ‘Right to feel Safe’ campaign most of Perth’s suburbs between Two Rocks and Mandurah. The campaign originated from Facebook ‘Move offenders on!’ which has attracted nearly 2,000 members.

Residents from the Shire of Gingin and the Yanchep region are being asked to sign a petition to change laws related to the release of sex offenders.

The group organising the petition began the collection of signatures, last week, with signings at Clarkson, Butler and Yanchep. Over the next four weeks, they are hoping to attend

Spokesperson for the group, Wendy Dimsdale, told the Sun City News: “We are working hard to compile a petition to reduce the timescale of notification on the community protection website from 21 days to prior or immediate notice. “We want the bail conditions to stipulate they must not use recreational facilities where families gather or children play.

“ We want rights to be notified of release into communities via a picture a name their convictions and date of release and area they are to reside in . “These changes are important to our families and their welfare.” The Sun City News will have copies of the petition at next Saturday’s Small Business EXPO, or you could call into our office at Shop 14 Two Rocks Shopping Centre. Stage two of changerooms overdue The changerooms at Oldham Oval were built by the City of Wanneroo in the early 2000s, with the promise of a Stage 2 within three to five years. Now some 14 years later, a group of users representing the Yanchep Redhawks Football Club, Yanchep Junior Football Club, Yanchep Redhawks Cricket Club and Yanchep Little Athletics have been meeting with City of Wanneroo administration and elected members seeking the building of the Stage 2 urgently. At a meeting held in the changerooms, last Monday night, administration officers and the Mayor, Tracey

Roberts seemed to be unaware of existing Stage 2 plans that were drawn up over tens years ago. The meeting was told, council didn’t have the resourses or funds available in the current budget to construct the building for at least 12 months. The local committee have been actively seeking financial support to help pay for part of the project. The meeting was told that a $5000 Telstra AFL Grassroots grant, plus $2500 from another sponsor had been received to help with the project.

Council administration told the meeting they would present a report to the August council meeting, detailing how they perceived Stage 2 could progress. Les Porter, one of the local committee said: “All the various club memorabilia is in our homes and sheds, our clubs need a meeting room they can call home.” “The Telstra grant is a fantastic start so we can hopefully improve our facilities for the various club and the community.” The Sun City News is aware that the football club would like to start an under 18’s

team and it is not possible without a suitable meeting room being available. The meeting room, approximately 100 square metres was always designed to adjoin the existing changeroom next to the kitchen/kiosk. City of Wanneroo’s estimate to build Stage 2 was approximately $250,000, while a local builder told the committee it should cost between $85,000 to $100,000. Currently Oldham Reserve is the only available sporting oval north of Butler until the Yanchep Ovals project is constructed in two or three years time.

Careless driving targeted Motorists who act carelessly on the road by eating, drinking or checking road maps are the next under the spotlight of authorities. Minister for Police and Road Safety, Liz Harvey, said the Road Safety Council would review penalties for careless driving offences after announcing a widespread increase in penalties for risky traffic offences. Minister Harvey said while drivers were routinely distracted by their mobile phone, other distractions such as eating or checking maps, were also a problem.

Police Commissioner, Karl O’Callaghan, the Road Safety Council and the RAC backed the widespread increases, which include higher fines and some demerit points rising, saying penalties are needed to be a deterrent and reflect the seriousness of the offences. The RAC added that there should be a demerit point penalty for speeding by less than 10km/h over the limit. Mr O’Callaghan said police would target drivers with obscured number plates and motorcyclists not wearing helmets.

Road Safety Council president, Murray Lampard, said the increased penalties would send a strong message to people who engaged in risky behaviour. Professor Lampard said the government had committed significant funding to road safety initiatives and was also supporting the council’s recommendations to increase speed enforcement penalties. “Enforcement is a very important part of the overall road safety strategy and is required to ensure that drivers know it is likely they will be detected for

committing relevant offences,” he said. Minister Harvey said these changes would be brought in to make roads safer from the Queen’s Birthday holiday period in late September. Some of the new penalties include: failing to stop at a STOP sign, up to $300 (was $150); failure to drive at a speed at which the driver can safely stop, up to $300 (was $50); overtaking when unsafe to do so, up to $400 (was $100); and, failure to keep a safe distance when overtaking a vehicle, up to $400 (was $100).

WA Minister for Planning, John Day, has conditionally approved the City of Wanneroo’s planning scheme amendment which allows developer contributions to be collected for the building of community facilities in Two RocksYanchep and Alkimos-Eglington. The council proposes to use these funds to construct the $7.15 Yanchep Ovals project. The Sun City News was told the Minister’s required amendments are only administrative. It has been estimated that it will be at least two more years before the new ovals will be available.

Unlicensed dealer fined Last week, a young man involved in the sale of a significant number of cars over a 17 month period, without holding a motor vehicle dealer’s licence, was fined $10,000 and ordered to pay $1,525.80 in costs at the Joondalup Magistrates Court. The Magistrate said that although the matter was not trivial, the accused had no prior convictions, appeared to be a person of good character and had aspirations to work in the mining industry, which would be affected if he was convicted. Commissioner for Consumer Protection Anne Driscoll warned that anyone buying and selling cars in a business capacity must hold a valid motor vehicle dealer’s licence. If problems arise after purchase, it can be difficult for car buyers to have any faults addressed, even where they may be entitled to under consumer law. Consumer Protection would like to hear from anyone in the community who is aware of unlicensed motor vehicle dealing.

He uses two legged jeans as his canvas, and this year this wanted to try something completely different - He decided to use the jeans as part of the painting. Paul used Jonah's character from the movie version of 22 Jump Street as the theme of the artwork. Painted on a large board l have stuck his jeans on as if he is wearing them. The jeans will go up auction at the Jeans 4 Genes Gala Dinner in Sydney on 23 August .

Meditation by the sea for physical health and emotional calm improve our physical and emotional health. Meditation isn’t linked to any religion or belief system, but is simply a practice where you set regular time aside to quiet your mind. Not only is it simple and useful, but it’s also inexpensive.

Imagine if someone just turned up and handed you a tool that when you used it, helped you sleep like a baby, increased your energy and libido, started to clear up those annoying physical complaints like high blood

pressure, pain and tension and helped you feel calmer and more in control. Would you say: ‘Yes please’? Research has shown that, with just a few minutes a day of meditation, we can begin to

There are many forms of meditation arising from different historical traditions, but they all have the general intention to bring greater mental focus and clarity, deeper peace, self understanding, and compassion. Meditation is becoming more and more accepted and acknowledged in the main-

stream where not so long ago it seemed obscure and something only the Buddha would be good at. Everyone can learn to meditate - Ordinary people are finding that they can pick up this tool and through simple practices discover a more rich and satisfying depth to their lives. Coastal Family Wellness in Two Rocks offers meditation classes each Thursday night from 7pm to 8pm. They are led by Rebecca Jennings, who also offers breathing education and healing through craniosacral therapy. Enquiries are welcome on 9561 2686.

Vitamins & Supplements What works for you? More than 75 per cent of Australians use complementary medicines.

For example, St John’s wort, used to alleviate depression, can interact with several commonly used prescription medicines, including the oral contraceptive pill.

Here’s a checklist to make sure you’re getting the most out of them.

n Be informed There’s a world of information on the web, but be careful.

n Know what you’re dealing with - Complementary medicines include vitamins, minerals and nutritional supplements, herbal medicines, traditional medicines, homeopathic medicines and some aromatherapy products. The effectiveness of any treatment depends on the individual person and your specific condition, no medicine is a universal cure, so you need to find out if the medicine is right for you. n Seek advice - Do your research before you take something new, including talking to your doctor or complementary medicine practitioner. Always read the label and make sure you take the correct dose.

n Find an accredited practitioner - Just like you would look into your GP’s qualifications, look at your complementary medicine practitioner’s qualifications. Are they accredited and registered with one of the professional bodies, such as the Australian TraditionalMedicine Society? n Ask about fees - While there are no Medicare rebates for consultations with complementary medicine practitioners, private health funds may entitle you to one.

To avoid costly surprises, always discuss full costs before undergoing treatment. n Watch for side effects - No medicine, even natural or herbal medicine, is completely free of side effects. Just because complementary medicines can be bought without a prescription doesn’t mean they’re less powerful. n Don’t mix medicines Always speak with your doctor before mixing any medications or supplements to find out if it’s safe.

Some sites provide wrong or misleading information so look for quality websites, including government endorsed sites or those of a respected national health organisation. n Buy local - We all love online shopping, but buying medicines from overseas websites can be dangerous. Australia has some of the strictest regulations in the world for complementary medicines, and products from overseas may contain illegal or harmful substances. Source: Naturally Australia magazine

Why you should avoid fad diets Fad diets are all the rage today Flip through magazines, surf the web or turn on the TV and you will surely see numerous diets that all promise to help you lose several pounds in as little as a week or two. If you have been trying to lose weight for some time now, these fad diets can certainly be tempting. However, most of these fad diets are not worth trying. Here are some reasons why you should avoid fad diets. n Weight Gain - Fad diets usually claim that they can

help you lose weight quickly and easily with minimal effort from your part. Even though this is what makes these diets tempting, this is also what makes them suspicious. Health experts will tell you time and again that the only way to effectively lose weight and keep it off is by making long term changes to your lifestyle, such as adapting a healthier diet and regularly exercising. n Altered Metabolism Because most fad diets

require you to eat a structured amount of food on a structured schedule, you can also end up disrupting your natural metabolism.

n Hair and Muscle Loss - The nutritional deficiencies that fad diets cause can also lead to health conditions like hair loss and muscle loss.

Your body has a natural ability to tell you when to eat and when to stop eating.

Your hair requires a good deal of protein in order to grow and thrive. When you are not getting enough protein in your diet, your hair eventually loses its health.

n Nutritional Deficiencies Fad diets also prohibit you from eating certain types of food. Perhaps your diet requires you to cut out carbohydrates or any type of fat from your daily foods. This can lead to a serious nutritional deficiency.

Poor hair health can lead to brittleness which can turn into breakage and shedding hair. Muscle loss is another negative effect of fad diets. Muscle loss is another negative effect of fad diets.

Hope in a boat

Local Dining & Entertainment

Carabooda resident brings Pride and Prejudice to life on stage Carabooda resident, Michelle Varley, is appearing in a love story from one of the most widely read writers of all time at Limelight Theatre in Wanneroo this August.

The ‘Hope in a Boat’ project is two motorbikes, ridden by Guy Cook and Glen Hurst towing a ‘tinnie’ over 21,000 kilometres around Australia in 80 days and attempting to raise one million dollars for diabetes research. Travelling with Guy and Glen are support crew, Raymond Cowcill and Marina Hurst, all members of the Albany Lions Club, have just started their hopefully world record breaking attempt, and dropped into Yanchep last weekend. A morning tea was organised by the Yanchep Lions Club at the Chawn Mia Tearooms. If you would like to make a donation, a special bank account has been established - Hope in a Boat, National Bank, BSB 086 518, A/c no: 843 831 400. All donations over $2.00 are tax deductable. You can follow the Hope in a Boat through Facebook - Daily entries are added with photos and movie clips of their trip.

Adapted from the Jane Austen novel by Jon Jory and directed by Elinor King, ‘Pride and Prejudice’ features all the wit and romance of the 1813 classic channelled into a refreshingly fast paced and engaging stage version. Involved with Watford’s Pump House Theatre Company in the UK, Varley moved to

Australia in 1997 but took a break from the stage to bring up her young children. The flame was rekindled last year when she appeared in Calendar Girls at Limelight Theatre. Pride and Prejudice plays at 8pm August 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23. Bookings on 9571 8591 between 9am and midday, Monday to Friday. The Limelight Theatre is located on Civic Drive, Wanneroo. Photo: Michelle, back left, is Mrs Bennet in Pride and Prejudice.

Carramar resident in WA premiere Carramar resident, Angelino Schintu, has done it all. He covered the 1987 America’s Cup defence in Fremantle, was one of the first journalists into Kobe after the 1995 earthquake and the first western broadcaster in Japan to report on the 9/11 terrorist attacks as events were unfolding. Also acting for more than 30 years in Australia, the UK and Japan, chronic renal failure halted Schintu’s career while in Tokyo and he returned to Perth, spending several years on dialysis before receiving a kidney transplant.

But his love of creative pursuits remains and this July he’s taking to the stage in a musical with a highly unlikely topic – One of Australia’s darkest child murder cases, The Hatpin. This is a story of hope, courage and a mother’s undying love for her child. The Hatpin plays at 8pm, July 17, 18, 19, 23, 24, 25 and 26 with a 2pm matinee July 20, at the heritage-listed Old Mill Theatre in South Perth. To book tickets call 9367 8719. Earlier reminder

Getting the facts

DPaW or the Department of Parks and Wildlife are sending out earlier reminders for Park Pass Renewals.

Regularly, the Sun City News receives a variety of ‘news tip offs’ but then there are those who are just seeking their 15 minutes of fame, bragging they have a world first scoop, when in fact they just have a very imaginative mind and no story.

A Yanchep resident received a letter, earlier this week, it was dated 9 July 2014, reminding him his park pass expires on 01 March 2015.

A recent incident related to someone bragging on Facebook they had a ‘newsworthy’ photo.

That’s what I call an early reminder!

When, in fact, there was no photo, just ‘brag talk’.

Where are the cookies? A Yanchep family happily handed over cash to a couple of ‘school kids’ believing they were helping local school fund-raising.

Odd news Wannabe failing their times with unable to times.

To date, they have not received the cookies or seen the school kids again. The Sun City News is unaware of any local school fundraising in this way. If anyone can shed some light on this venture, please call the Sun City News on 9561 2500.

The woman has the biggest number of failures under her belt, but is followed by many more including a 30 year old man who has 86 unsuccessful attempts.

Clarification

The original Sun City News article didn’t state that the City of Wanneroo produced the book, we only highlighted that much of the information was incorrect, including publishing photos and details of three councillors who are no longer on council. Why would information?

Darts fundraiser

Win a skydive

Gingin Ladies Darts Club annually runs a Ladies fundraising weekend of darts, raising funds for the Chittering/ Gingin St John Ambulance centre.

In the last issue of the Sun City News were we revealed a recent 2014 Community Directory had six pages of City of Wanneroo advertising including information and photos that were out-of-date. City of Wanneroo’s boss of PR, was quick off the mark to make it clear that the council did not publish the directory, nor had they authorised the six pages of advertising.

British drivers are theory test scores of one woman being pass a record 110

This vehicle was dumped and trashed in Capricorn Estate recently.

Rubbish dumped

Over the past seven years, the Gingin Ladies darts weekend has raised nearly $30,000. Rubbish dumping is rife at the top end of the Reef Estate in Two Rocks. Household goods are being dumped weekly.

Those wanting to drive a car or ride a motorcycle must pass driving theory before booking their practical exam, which is itself hard to get through.

This year 72 ladies enjoyed two days of fellowship, fun, fundraising and fun, raising over $6500. This year’s winners were Pilbara Princesses in pink section; and Mandurah Dolphins in the green section. There is always a last team, this year the honour went to the Peaches team.

The organisers would like to thank everyone who has supported their fundraiser over the years - What a fabulous effort for a little country town.

A 41 year old learner eventually passed on his 80th try but a 27 year old man has still not managed to get enough answers right after 64 attempts.

The Sun City News will be giving away a tandem Skydive at York to one lucky person at next Saturday’s Small Business EXPO being held at Yanchep Central Shopping Centre. Entry must on an official entry form, below, or from our stall at the EXPO. The lucky person who wins this tandem skydive will also receive a video of the thrilling adventure.

The theory test has two parts, one made up of multiple choice questions with the other a hazard perception section. At $56 AUD a time, undergoing multiple attempts doesn’t come cheap. Last week, it emerged that a 24 year old woman holds the record for failing the practical part of the test the most times - She finally passed after her 24th attempt and is one of eight Britons to clock up 20 test by the end of last year,
