The Young Creatives Issue

Just like last year, June’s the month we want to introduce you to some home-grown young creatives. Inspired and motivated: that’s how we want to you feel before you go buck wild this summer on the projects you’ve wanted to throw yourself into for a long, long time. From Tom Galle, whose Sad Tweets creation is simply hilarious and who generated a lot of buzz with his Drake Weather Report, to artistic centipede Yannick Franck and Ilke Cop’s urban couture for the non-conformist: read it, enjoy it and then go to work, you genius. Time to get the ball rollin’.

June Recommendations Each month our staff provides you with a selection of the finer things in life. Enjoy!

Art: Laurent Molet

Art: Stephanie Van de Velde

Carefully looking for the naked, unguarded human being, Stephanie Van de Velde’s photographs identify men and women as complex group animals, individuals choreographing their bodies in a seemingly futile attempt to not disappear in an anonymous crowd. The real value of her images lies in what they tell us about ‘being human’. How can one stay an individual in a large group of people? What to do when the boundaries of your own ‘self’ collide with those of hundreds of others? How do these bodies, these figurines find their place in that big expanse of nonspace that a beach really is?

Behind the friendly and sincere facade of our dear friend lurks a mathematician-collagist of rare genius. Laurent Molet, both his real and artist name, gives scenes from everyday life an intergalactic twist. His impressive techniques, which he uses to defy the laws of gravity and proportion, never compromise the precision and coherence of his collages, which are sometimes engaged, sometimes hilarious.

Art: Hannah Polak

Having launched his own label (Varech), Brice Dreessen – aka Lowcommittee – released Race At Neon Club... on Brussels label VLEK. On it, he explores facets of noise, rumbling drones and Kevin Drumm’s punk with disintegrating home loops. But ‘producer’ is just one of his many talents, along with industrial designer, DJ, promoter and biker boy. After having played Bozar Night, Ateliers Claus and Vooruit, this young talent from Liège proves the new generation is coming – with weapons of mass destruction.

During her residency at Subbacultcha NL’s art department, artist Hannah Polak had the opportunity to work at the project space for two months. Where her previous work consisted of weird, lumpy objects and sticky tree trunks, for her residency Polak got a camera and looked closer into what it means to be a human being. From drunken Disney movie nights to a transcending juice experience, her research ultimately resulted in a mixed-media installation conveniently titled ‘You then arrive at an oasis of smooth roads and manicured fairways’.

disorder. As KVP, she creates a series of patterns (printed in textile serigraphy in her workshop or digitally by subcontractors) that appear on a collection of objects – from pieces of furniture and interior design to fashion and accessories. Right now, she’s upcycling old armchairs, reweaving the upholstery with sandows (latex elastic wire), among other projects.

There is never any explanation given when Sander Muylaert’s pictures are presented. The viewer is invited to make his own story about what’s happening. The subjects are always humans and the influence they have on their world. Muylaert captures the things they leave behind without even noticing. Because his subjects are unaware they’re being photographed, they cannot change or manipulate the image Muylaert is making. Walking around with a certain emotion and feeling in his head, Muylaert shoots what he sees, who he meets – no planning involved.

The Young Creatives Issue. Feature

Tom Galle Words by Tom Galle Photos shot by Bob Jeusette in New York, USA

I’m Tom Galle, a digital creative and technologist by day and an aspiring artist by night. I’m originally from Belgium, having moved to New York two and a half years ago to pursue a career overseas. I moved here to work with an innovative Japanese design and technology company called Party NY, and because there is a vibrant net art and media art scene here, in which I wanted to partake. As an artist, I mostly work around the internet, popular culture and new media. Most of my work is currently website-based, but I’m working on a few performance pieces and an installation. I’m also very interested in using social media feeds as an artistic expression; a lot of my posts are conceptual and aim to create this ironic persona. In both my personal and my professional work I try to use technology in new ways to create new output. Professionally, I use technology mostly to create inventive experiences for users and to communicate something about the client while doing so. In my personal work, I try to be more edgy and thought-provoking around how we use the internet, or create tools to use the internet in fun ways. I also like to create work that sort of has the same humour and sensibility that memes have, but instead of it being an image they are experiences on the internet (mini games, apps, etc.). My inspiration mostly comes from surfing the internet. My daily

Tom Galle. Continued feeds are filled with interesting content that can be idea starters. Besides that, I often get inspired when researching new technologies or when browsing through the amazing visual and conceptual artists who post their things on Tumblr. Sometimes I force myself to try to find niche/emerging internet cultures or weird old websites, which can lead to interesting results that spark ideas. My motivation is to create unique ideas that I can put out into the world that people enjoy and resonate with, and eventually also create art that is radical and innovative. I took time to develop my own voice, which I consider to be different than what other people are doing. I do think that artistic expression should be constantly evolving to stay original, so I try to experiment with new ideas and technologies. For me, it’s also important to keep looking at what happens on the internet and what other people in my area are doing. In time, I want to become a successful artist with a body of work that allows me to live mostly from my art so I can spend more time on it, or find a good relationship between making art and working in the technology/design/advertising industries. People I look up to are Kanye West, Drake, Justin Bieber, Rafaël Rozendaal, 4Real (agency), Claudia Maité, Kim Asendorf, ART404, Vince Mckelvie, Kim Laughton and Kenneth Goldsmith. In Flanders, that would be the agency pleaseletmedesign and Ramin Afshar. If you ask me with who I’d want to collaborate with one day, I’d say Kanye West – not so much for the work that would come out of it but to get a chance to see how he works and thinks.

Lisa Hanze Words by Lisa Hanze Photos Shot by Laurent Bosteels in Ghent, Belgium

When I was a young girl, I dreamt of being a successful fashion designer. Since childhood, I’ve enjoyed experimenting with textiles and combining them with other materials. After secondary school, where I studied fine arts, I came into contact with the textile design programme, which gave me a greater insight of all the possibilities that textiles and their designs had to offer. Now, three years later, graphic design on textiles for various applications occupies most of my time. As a student at the Luca School of Arts in Ghent, I’m confronted daily with other forms of art. The architect Luis Barragan and the painters from the hard-edge movement inspired me and triggered me to use these kinds of forms and structures in my work with textiles. In my studio, I experiment a lot and work hard, which has resulted in my own style, which differs from the mainstream. Maybe this will lead to creating my own label. Most of my work originates from a hand-made model, which is later processed by various software programs. This results work where tension between the

‘I always try to translate an idea to a visual form’ handmade model and computer design is frequently witnessed. As textiles and their manufacturing techniques come in different forms, the possibilities for making new designs are unlimited. Beautiful things have always moved me, and that’s why I give a lot of attention to aesthetics in my work. I always try to translate an idea to a visual form. Currently, I am experimenting with weaving, screen-printing and digital printing. Mae Engelgeer is an inspiration to me, as she is very strong in her compositions and her colour mixing. In her work you can see that she has a lot of experience with many available manufacturing techniques. Frequently people ask me what kind of job I would like to do in the future. I hope I can keep on designing textiles and work in a related sector – preferably for a famous fashion designer like Raf Simons or Kenzo. They attract me due to their special prints, graphic style and their prêt-a-porter fashion. Another sector that interests me is interior design, where textiles are used in all kinds of furniture or accessories. I don’t know where I’ll end up, but I hope some creative and nice people are reading this article with interest!

Arnaud Vanrafelghem. Continued I graduated in architecture from LUCA in Ghent, but I almost immediately started working as an artist’s assistant and later as a tour manager for bands. My own work balances on this border, since I was always interested in the dialogue between arts and architecture. My role is perhaps best described as ‘consulting architect’, a description I took from Le Corbusier. I’m trying to view a wide range of subjects from the perspective of an architect. I’ve worked in different locations all over the world. Travelling has been a big part of my life in recent years, and being abroad inspired a certain taste and worldly wisdom in me. I got used to working with a range of people in different contexts and became a go-to consultant for many situations. I recently brought this baggage to my first atelier, a fixed werkstatt I rent from NUCLEO in Ghent. It’s a place where I can try things out. For me, architecture is adapting a space to human needs based on trial and error and coincidence. In most cases this is a very slow process, but the process itself is the most important thing. I build what other people should be able to build themselves. In my atelier I can take the time to interpret, draw and make presentations. Instead of being focused on the site, I now try to generalise my ideas and inspirations into theories I can apply to different situations. At the moment I’m working on a small scale, locally. In Germany they use the word objektbau next to terms like hausbau. But I hope the future and my experience will bring me abroad again. My dream is to work and live in my projects. To try things out and see the place through the eyes of the residents combined with my vision on architecture and art. That’s probably why I move furniture and switch rooms and apartments all the time... Instagram: @rrrrnoo

Yannick Franck Words by Yannick Franck Photos shot by Pietro Riparbelli in Cefalu, Sicily

For the last ten years I’ve been experimenting as a performer, a vocalist and an electronic musician. I also create site-specific installations. I run the left-field music label Idiosyncratics, play in duo Orphan Swords and work as a curator for arts centre Les Brasseurs in Liège. My core concern has always been to create works that establish a relationship between inner and outer life, introspection and contextualisation, a fruitful though confrontational dialogue. As I believe art is a life-changing matter, you could see all of my art works as talismans. At least the ones that I consider active; the others could be classified as ‘relics’. Everything I do arises from an ontological nature. I am trying to define a lifestyle that embodies my works and to create works that change the course of my life. Then if I can share that – for instance, by playing trance-inducing music – and people in the audience seem moved, I’m glad. I’m fascinated by subcultures. When you’ve never been satisfied

with what was offered to you on a plate and you dig deep enough you always find out about fantastic things. Any ‘official’ trend has a way more poetic and genuine, hidden counterpart. A gnostic tradition of some kind. It is up to us to define our own mythology, build our own pantheon of superheroes rather than having them dictated to us. I try to develop a radical though open-minded philosophy, investigating in all the directions I can. I’m all about life, celebration

30

The Young Creatives Issue and joy, even though most of my achievements might seem serious at first sight. That’s probably due to my idea that you can’t reach true joy without confronting contradictions, seeking the union of opposites. I’m not too fond of sophistication if it doesn’t serve a gritty essence. Perfection is boring. There are tons of artists I love, to name a few: Kenneth Anger, Rodney Graham, Fischli & Weiss, Roman Signer, Charlemagne Palestine (a new album just came out on Idiosyncratics!), Leif Elggren, Marta Zapparoli, Bestial Mouths, Coil, PTV, Icon Template, Räpe Blossoms, Lust For Youth, Peter Fengler, Crystal Stilts, The Jesus and Mary Chain... Over the last decade I had the chance to work together with talented and inspiring people such as Gast Bouschet & Nadine Hilbert, Esther Venrooy, Pietro Riparbelli, Craig Hilton, Jason Van Gulick (with Y.E.R.M.O.), my daemon brother Phil Maggi... Orphan Swords is quite a fantastic journey for me, because of the collision with Pierre (aka Maze, he’s also a fabulous DJ and curates BEAF). We love to melt our sensibilities together into abrasive mixtures. Les Brasseurs has existed for 20 years; we now run it with Sarah Charlier and Corentin Lahaye. We’re all about celebrating each artist’s singularity, mostly through solo shows. Forthcoming shows include Joris Van De Moortel, Sarah Westphal and Marc O’Callaghan. We also have a Young Artist Platform that is run by Jérôme Mayer; Marijn Rijksen (NL) will have a show in June in the window that we dedicate to young creation. This year we’ve lost a great part of our funding, and we’re struggling to keep it flowing. But as long as it’s possible, we will! We shall never stop promoting creativity; there’s nothing more essential. yannickfranck.com

Ilke Cop Words by Ilke Cop Photos shot by Jonne Oldenburg in Brussels, Belgium

When I was growing up, I thought I could be anyone, anything. In short, I believed I could change the world. Although I realise that this childish naivety doesn’t coincide with reality, it has never fully left my side. It spurred me to found my own high-end fashion label, ILKECOP, this past March. My brand carries my name and rightfully so, because it represents my ideals and vision, which I incorporate in all aspects of the label. I often refer to ILKECOP as ‘Urban Couture for the Non-conformist’. The urban element is key to the label, because it’s situated in the beating heart of Belgium – Brussels – and often refers to urban culture. With my designs I try to appeal to an audience that takes the time to look twice at a piece of clothing; first as a garment and second as an expression of an aesthetic vision. Another key element to the company is the importance of ecology. My goal is to make honestly produced clothing that doesn’t damage the environment and at the same time respects the rights of workers. All fabrics come from Europe and the clothes are produced in Belgium. I graduated as an art historian before I started in fashion design. I get a lot of my ideas looking at, listening to and thinking about art. Like a lot of people, I’m constantly drawn to things that are aesthetically pleasing. The ultimate satisfaction comes from perceiving or

The Young Creatives Issue creating something of beauty, whether it’s a perfectly constructed dress, a delicious dish, a piece of art or a musical composition. But even more fulfilling and rewarding is finding beauty in something that doesn’t hold that quality upon first glance. That’s why the eerie and awkward are always lurking in my designs and that’s what I find makes fashion not only beautiful but also interesting. I mostly look up to people who are kind and enjoy life. I also have big admiration for people who don’t let themselves be held back by fear or the disbelief of others. In time I would love to start a collective with other small, up-and-coming Belgian designers. Collaborating with artists who are just starting and who are dealing with the same roadblocks and hurdles as me, is something I thoroughly enjoy. Recently I created a premium edition bag with the women of Avalanche Bags, a young, quality brand from Ghent. My first collection for winter 2015/16 will be in stores at the end of August. It’s modest and consists of four sweaters, two of which are embroidered by hand in Belgium. The imagery of the dinosaur is key in this first collection. It was baptised ‘Extinct’, a referral to not only the disappeared reptiles but also to the innocence and open-mindedness that leaves us when we grow up. Currently I have a day job to support the launch of my label and to survive in the very competitive climate that is the fashion business. Although I feel my big dream has already come true, my ultimate goal is to make a living from my artistic exploits. So I keep dreaming of the endless possibilities, challenges and milestones that lie ahead.

Books Text by Gabriela González. Artwork by Gabriela González and Douglas Fur

Shock Value by John Waters Let’s get one thing straight: John Waters is the coolest. This is one of those undeniable facts of life, like fire burns, grass is green and dogs are better than cats (word). Apart from making hilariously demented films, top-notch stand-up acts and possibly the best Christmas music compilation ever, John Waters wrote a book that lives up to his infamy. Shock Value, a selfproclaimed tasteful book about bad taste, is an autobiographycum-manifesto, as well as an ode to Waters’ beloved hometown of Baltimore and the filth and freaks that have inspired him since he was young and moustacheless. The book kicks off with a chapter on the making of Pink Flamingos – an undeniably seminal and tasteful film – for which he enlisted a gang of the most outlandish characters who were, in a sense, just being themselves. There’s quite a bit on Divine, an irrefutable crux in Waters’ early

works, as well as his other partners in trash. His early days as a young, hungry filmmaker form the core of the book, passing through childhood fascinations with violence, amusement parks and rock’n’roll, and recounting the many slapdash ways his first films were made – without excluding the numerous jail trips he and his co-conspirators would make in between. Calling it entertaining would be selling it short. Shock Value transcends time and common sense and leaves you emboldened, inspired and completely out of breath from laughing so hard. It’s yet another testament to John Waters’ enduring charisma, sharpness and love for all things that most people find unlovable.

Sans toit ni loi Agnes Varda, 1985

‘If you tell the story of Citizen Kane, it’s not much of a story. A rich old man is dying, utters a word we don’t understand. We don’t discover much, just some pieces about his life, and finally it’s just a sled. […] What makes it so interesting is the way Welles tells us about the man – intriguing us about what people think about him’, dixit Agnes Varda, about the point of departure for her Sans toit ni loi. ‘And, with as much perversity as playfulness, Varda gives us the total inversion of Welles’ masterpiece in Vagabond: a young, poor vagrant woman is dead. She died in a way we don’t understand. We don’t discover so much, just some pieces of her life and finally it is just a pagan ritual of the vine.’ (S Lewis) In the 1980s, Varda notices an increase of young women choosing a life outside of society. After one is found dead she reenacts the last winter of the vagrant’s life. Screening at Cinema Zuid, Antwerp on 02 June.

Taiwanese Film Panorama Cinematek and Cinema Zuid offer a summer dedicated to Taiwanese cinema, starting off with a retrospective of Hou Hsiao-hsien, generally said to be one of the greatest living film directors. In his own words: ‘I used to slip inside and climb the mango tree. I stole mangoes. From the treetop, I could really feel space and time, a sense of solitude, which marked me deeply. That may be why I make films. As if, from a given angle, we stopped to look and felt immersed in space and time.’ And what happened before and after this Taiwanese new wave came along in the ’80s? Screenings from 01 June until 30 July at Cinematek, Brussels. Cinema Zuid, Antwerp also screens a wide array of films.

Orson Welles centennial ‘If the cinema had never been fashioned by poetry, it would have remained no more than a mechanical curiosity, occasionally on view like a stuffed whale.’ Orson Welles would have turned a hundred this year. Throughout June, Sabzian will publish a series of texts around Orson Welles’ oeuvre as a tribute to his intellectual and cinematic heritage. First instalment: Ribbons of Dreams, his passionate and lively engagement with the classical 1.33 aspect ratio. Check www.sabzian.be

ciplinary Quebec artist Patrick Bernatchez, in order to plunge us into an abyss of life and death, of rebirth and mutation, of light and darkness, noise and silence. Opposing concepts that are inevitably linked in an eternal cycle, time being omnipresent as a key factor of evolution and decomposition.

Part 2 of this exhibition explores how contemporary artists deal with found footage and images. Partly in relation to cinema history, the notion of storytelling and our society, the exhibition presents a kaleidoscope of images and sequences that force the spectator to question social stereotypes, cinematic norms and models.

04 June: Eternal Tapestry

Film: The Voices

Het Bos. Kikagaku Moyo provides psychedelic rock tunes, straight from Tokyo, Japan.

Eternal Tapestry + Kikagaku Moyo

04 June - Het Bos, Antwerp 20.00 | €8 | Free for members Hypnotising, futuristic and naturalistic: all are words that come to mind when we think about Eternal Tapestry, Portland’s all-round sonic explorers. Their massive new double album, Wild Strawberries, was recorded in a secluded cabin in the shadow of Mount Hood. Spending time learning about the area's floral makeup while relaxing under the stars, they took the interplay between their impressionistic music and the nature around them to the next level. With artwork and song titles named after regional plants, it’s obvious this show can't be missed by those who enjoy spending time in

Film: The Voices

05 June - Cinema Zuid, Antwerp 18.00 | €5 | Free for members Just horribly funny, the last creation of Marjane Satrapi – known for the magnificent animated movie Persepolis – leads viewers through the daily life of Jerry Hickfang, living and working in a small town in the USA. Jerry ships bathtubs for a small factory, called Milton, and soon falls in love with one of his colleagues. But Jerry has a secret that he doesn’t want to reveal: he hears voices. Especially those of his pets: Bosco the benevolent dog and Mr Whiskers, the evil cat.

06 June: Ducktails

Everything goes fine when Jerry takes his medication, but when he doesn’t... Be prepared for some murder scenes!

12 June: Easter

Easter

Ducktails

Ducktails is the psychedelic pop project of Real Estate guitarist Matt Mondanile. What started out as an experimental lofi solo project has shifted into a more traditional band-like formula. Ducktails and Real Estate seem to share the same musical DNA, but with Ducktails, Mondanile takes his dreamy style to its full extent. The result ends up a little bit further away from mainstream pop and a bit closer to heaven. The monopolists of taste at Pitchfork adore him. They’re already wetting their pencils for Ducktails’ upcoming album, St Catherine, which is due out in June.

We’ll never know what exactly prompted Stine Omar to speak to Max Boss one extraordinary afternoon in Berlin, but it was the beginning of a fascinating artistic and almost physical siblingship. Creating down-tempo, minimalistic synths and alienating supercooled voices singing about alien babies and twirling silver fish on the bathroom floor, Easter want to bring something bigger into this world, opening up the gates to a dark otherworldy realm. The concert is exclusive for Subbacultcha members. Those who wish to attend need to RSVP via magazine@subbacultcha.be.

14 June - Cactus (Breaking Waves), Brugge 20.00 | €11 | Free for members

Take some rumbling beats, an ecstatic frenzy on the guitars and a punching voice and you have Zun Zun Engui. They started playing together back in 2008 in Bristol, where the sun doesn’t often come out but where it shines bright through their sounds. Zun Zun Engui is Japanese for ‘Fast Fast Weir’. Indeed, when you hear their music, tinged with Afro-beat, tropicalia, no wave and punk funk, it makes sense. Also performing on this Breaking Waves night: Hypochristmutreefuzz, or the art of noise flipping, coming from the flourishing city of Ghent.

Bizarre Danish post-pop with an ironic twist. The magnificent singer/producer Dinner (aka Anders Rhedin) creates music that is both a parody of and an ode to 1980s kitchy synthpop. In many ways, his music transcends his source of inspiration. His creations sound refined and amateurish at the same time, intentionally sloppy yet finished off with a great sense of humour. But if you look past the ironic tone of his lyrics and visuals, you’ll discover some impressively well-made sonic sculptures. A pleasure to the ear and the mind.

Kevin Morby

18 June - Botanique, Brussels 20.00 | €17 | Free for members

15 June - Mad Café, JauneOrange - Liege 20.00 | €8 | Free for members

While she ignites bonfires of fantasy everywhere she wanders, Norwegian artist Jenny Hval never ceases to affirm an existentially – and sexually – minded lyrical universe in which she plays with words as she does with conventions. After recently offering Meshes of Voice (2014), released with compatriot Susanna, she comes back spinning ‘That Battle is Over’, annunciating her upcoming fifth album, Apocalypse, Girl, to be released this month on Sacred Bones Records. Tiptoeing through dissonance, majesty and prose, Jenny Hval delivers an outlandish piece of art.

He used to be part of the bands Woods and The Babies, but with his solo debut, Harlem River, Kevin Morby released one of the most popular albums of 2013. With Lou Reed, Bob Dylan and Neil Young as his influences, Morby opts for soft strumming on an acoustic guitar, some organs and polished electric guitars, reminding of Real Estate and Kurt Vile. Last year’s follow-up LP, Still Life, was another gem of easy-going guitar melodies, wonderfully suited for a warm Sunday evening.

Are they an angry version of the jeans from the cover of Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers? Well, they surely have a great punk and garage influence, and an energy that belongs to the hardcore scene. Currently signed on Sub Pop, they released their fourth LP, called Honeys, in 2013, produced by Alex Newport (At The Drive-In, Ikara Colt, O’Death), and it was about time that this noisy and loud quartet made it to Europe! Deliciously abrasive, this band is perfect if you’re in a bloodthirsty mood, and they’re guaranteed to awaken all the verve that sleeps inside of you.

What’s the relationship between language, movement and fumbling? That’s what performer, choreographer and young creative par excellence Louis Vanhaverbeke tries to investigate, whilst talking, thinking and dancing across the room. Is it possible to reunite mind and body? Or do they concur and challenge each other. During a one-monthresidency at CAMPO, Vanhaverbeke prepared Kokokito. It originates in his graduation performance Kokito, which was celebrated as ‘extraordinarily rich, physical and at the same time poetic and disarming’.
