THE CARRIER BAG

In Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction, Ursula K. Le Guin retells the story of human origin by redefining technology as a cultural carrier bag rather than a weapon of domination. She states that prior to sticks, swords and other hunting tools, our ancestors' greatest invention was the container: the basket of wild oats, the medicine bundle, the net made of your own hair, the home, the shrine, the place that contains whatever is sacred. The recipient, the holder, the story. The bag of stars. So in the end, it isn’t the catch that makes the difference. If you haven’t something to put it in, the catch will escape you. What is more important is, is the story of your catch. It is always the story. That story is a basket, so powerful as it holds our dreams. (source: theanarchistlibrary.org)

The first issue of 2023 is bringing us a few new stories. From the lilac world of Neoza to Saudade Experiment’s homegrown innovative nu-soul to the collection of narratives and anecdotes of Pieter Jennes’ work and the backgrounds of our members. They all are little heroes who inspire us, whilst shaping our future. That is news.

Multidisciplinary artist Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura graduated from the Drama Academy in Maastricht as a performer and has drawn on the forms and techniques of various art forms including performance, music and film ever since. She has played at the Nationaal Theater and NTGent and has created several solo performances. These have often been described as 'rich in images and colours' and are sometimes perceived

Ode to a Love Lost -

as radical. Her performances are often motivated by memories of her past and a mixture of both her West African roots and her current knowledge and experiences of the Western world. Her work reflects her religious and spiritual background. She tends to take the role of a storyteller on stage, while the audience usually takes the role of witness. Her physical presence on stage aims to touch the primal essence of being human.

Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe has created a furore as a director and countertenor in his own operatic musical projects. He challenges the classical repertoire in his work, asking dancers to become singers and singers to become dancers. Meirhaeghe calls for unashamed access to big emotions while offering pleasure to the semi-skilled, looking for a different kind of virtuosity. In his first production as a resident Toneelhuis artist, he himself performs as a dancer. As a dancer on stage himself, Meirhaeghe engages in an intimate artistic dialogue with a number of young choreographers. The focus is on his own body, influenced by Western standards and ideals of beauty that can be seen in art and advertising, among other places. With a lost love as a motor, a deep crater as a landscape and a dual relation to the norm, Meirhaeghe literally moves toward liberation.

With NITE SH FT, MoMu and Arenberg redistribute mental and physical museum spaces. MoMu's latest exhibition MIRROR MIRROR reveals the connection between fashion, psychology, self-image and identity. NITE SH FT takes the exhibit to the stage. Musicians, performers, voguers and dancers set up their stages at MoMu, taking over the entire museum with performances during four nocturnes. The voice of Antwerp-based singer/ songwriter Mimi Waterfall meshes beautifully with her earthy, spiritual style. Supported by a mixture of soul and reggae-inspired melodies Mimi invokes the

listener to (re)connect with his Highest Self and his own divinity.

Arne Luiting is a dancer and actor. In 2019 he graduated from the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. Ever since then he’s been travelling across Europe and has played in Germany, Belgium and Switzerland.

Mateusz Staniak lives and works in Amsterdam, where he followed a theatre directing programme at the Academy of Theatre and Dance. Staniak is fascinated by the possibility to reinvent reality through theatre.

Coco & Clair Clair is an Atlanta-based duo consisting of Taylor Nave (Coco) and Claire Toothill (Clair Clair). The two young women met on Twitter in 2012 before becoming what they are today: the self-proclaimed pioneers of ‘demon glam rock’! With ‘Pretty’ and ‘Crushcrush’, the duo released two very good singles that allowed them to become known beyond the borders of their city. This was followed by an album, an EP and a whole host of lo-fi bedroom hits with hip-hop influences that confirmed their status as pop stars in the making.

Saudade Experiment

Cherishing Freedom

On the 26th of January, Saudade Experiment will provide la Rotonde once again with their homegrown innovative nu-soul. Since the release of their debut EP Flowers and Dust in 2018 and successor IKIGAI in 2019, their atypical sounds and blend of soul, indie, jazz and hip hop quickly attracted attention in the Belgian music scene. Tune in as we talk with founder and singer Junior Bokele about music, life and much more.

I live in Brussels – Woluwe SaintLambert. I work in music as a DJ, as an artist, a guitarist: loads of stuff (laughs). My hustle at the moment is to get Saudade Experiment up and running, but it’s always a bit of a struggle.

You mentioned you also work as a DJ, is it something you do very often, or more of a fringe activity?

Well, I used to play from time to time before the pandemic, but then a friend of mine pushed me a little to play during his finissage, which I did. After that, other friends also started to ask me to play for them on various occasions and for a couple of months, I've been playing literally every week. I didn’t really expect it, but yeah, it’s happening (laughs).

I really like ‘Flemish craziness’ in terms of music

How did you start making music?

I started making music quite late, to be honest, I was about 16. Before that, I was actually really into acting; that was ‘the path’ I was supposed to follow, but then I decided differently (laughs). At 15-16, my interest in music slowly started to replace my occupation with acting and I haven’t stopped since.

Are there some important figures for you in music? People who influenced your music or how you approach it?

It’s always a bit complicated to answer this question – I’d say R&B and hip hop came first, but when I discovered guitar playing, I became more into soul, rock and indie rock. Then also jazz came along. The thing is, I’ve always been fascinated by the UK culture, so living in London played a big part. I was amazed at how art was made there, and how people were inspired there all the time, you know? In terms of music, it has been quite a big thing for me. But of course, also the US scene played a part – Motown of course, but even rock and jazz obviously. I also loved the Soulquarians: Erykah Badu, The Roots, Common, D’Angelo, you name it.

Tell us something more about yourself. Where do you live, work, and eat?
Saudade Experiment

I understand you lived in London for a while and that played a part in forming your creativity, how was the experience?

I moved there on my own but visited with my family before that. Initially, I wanted to stay for a year, but it lasted a little longer (laughs). The goal was to study there, but that didn’t work out because of the costs, so I started working as a chef but also did open mic’s, hanging out with other musicians etc.

I want people to ‘understand’ my music from their point of view

Well, I started out with some guys from Antwerp (Nathan Van Brande, Arthur Lonneux and Brice Deconinck), but because of the pandemic and the different projects we were working on, it became really difficult to keep the project going. As the one who writes the music and stuff, it made sense just to keep on going. I’m just trying to find new ways to express and develop myself within the project; that’s also when the name change from Saudade to Saudade Experiment came about –the music and the project are all about the experiment: it made sense for me to move from there.

Some time ago you started Saudade Experiment, how did that come to be?
I always wanted Saudade to be more like a collective, a platform you know

Saudade Experiment's style has been described as groovy soul, indie rock, jazzy and electronic. The so-called British sound is also very present, what makes this sound and the culture around it so attractive to you? It’s quite simple for me: in the UK people get very interested when you’re creative when you have this ‘different side’ of you to explore. There is a general open-mindedness and that’s definitely reflected in Saudade Experiment; trying to find new ways to play music etc. For example, the first two EPs are quite different from each other, and that’s the idea: I really want to play the music I want when I want it. When artists get recognition for their work but then decide to mix things up, people often get mad. But doesn’t it only make sense to change and move on all the time? For me that’s key: I wanted to keep this freedom and give people the possibility to listen to different things from me. Why should I stick to one method if I don’t want to?

I always wanted Saudade to be more like a collective, a platform you know. I may have a different musician later on, that all depends on where I want to go musically.

I guess Saudade Experiment is the perfect name for the jazzy and dreamy soul sentiment you want to evoke with your music. In Portuguese, it means something like a feeling of longing or a blend of melancholy and joyful reminiscence. Apart from that, it’s quite impossible to fully translate. Is that what jazz and soul are all about for you?

Yes, totally. That’s also why I don’t really like to explain my music – what this and that track may mean and so on. The feeling you get from music or a painting only derives from you and your general knowledge about it; I want people to ‘understand’ my music from their point of view and not mine and that’s exactly why the name Saudade inspired me so much.

Where do you seek inspiration and enjoyment apart from your music?

Well, everything is about music at the moment, but I also like to experiment with other media to get creative. I’m interested in a lot of things, but it always takes time to develop yourself! Lately, I’ve been working a lot with 3D motion, visuals and stuff. Again, it always takes a lot of time.

What does the future hold on an artistic level? What would you like to realize in the future with or without Saudade Experiment?

I really want to go abroad with Saudade Experiment and work with like-minded people. That’s something I’m really looking forward to. Other than that I would say the 3D motion, I’m quite obsessed with it at the moment (chuckles). I really love it. Those are basically the main focuses right now… Now that I think of it, I would like to work with Flemish artists in the future as well! I really like ‘Flemish craziness’ in terms of music.

Neoza Goffin

I want people to feel my art

The floor is lilac. So is the furniture, the stationery, the kettle in the corner. The whole room is enclosed by fluffy lilac fabric, with occasional patches of pink and blue. At first glance (and feel), Neoza Goffin’s studio feels like the perfect backdrop to a childhood dream. ‘Lilac manifests childlike imagination’, the healing artist agrees as she’s guiding us through her practice where she organises touch-based alleviating rituals such as cuddle piles. Inspired by spiritual practices from around the world, KASK alumnus Neoza Goffin creates multidisciplinary spaces to learn to respect and voice our bodies' boundaries.

T/W: trauma, sexual violence

I was trained initially as a photographer at KASK, but my practice evolved into what I consider to be an interdisciplinary healing art practice. I’ve always had the urge to make art that could make a difference in this world, to evoke something in my audience. In high school, I made a project around feminism after I had experienced sexual trauma at fourteen years old. I discovered the healing aspect of processing my traumas through art, while also addressing relevant issues in the broader sense. I took a sabbatical and experimented with drugs, psychedelics, and fetish parties. I was rediscovering my boundaries. The drugs, as I got sober, brought me to spiritualism. I’m high on life now. In my masters' project, I combined all media and disciplines that had attracted me throughout my education, like video and VR. I want to create an immersive, alternative world through image, sound, and feel. The tactility of my installations is very important. Everything is handmade. In each of my images, I incorporate spiritual symbolism.

I wanted to stop showing art. I want people to feel my art. Sexuality has always been a central theme in my creative process, and spiritualism has flowed in throughout the year. I discovered tantra, which is, to me, the combination of sexuality and spirituality. This is knowledge thousands of years old, and it’s still helping people, like me. So, those are the roots, my touch-based healing practice was born. In a low-threshold environment and through touch, I encourage people to show consent via body language. Words of consent are important, but in some situations they are insufficient.

What kind of reaction or feeling do you want to evoke in your audience?

I want to teach people how much of a powerful tool body language is and how to listen to your body Also, that sexual energy is complex. We often think you either have sex with someone or you don’t have sex with them, but there are so many things between those two poles. You can experience sexual energy with someone you don’t necessarily want to sleep with.

In your studio, the quote ‘Be your higher self every day’ is painted on the wall. What is the higher self to you?

The higher self is a known concept in guided meditations, where they often explain it as the best version of yourself sitting in front of you, with whom you can ask questions. Being your higher self doesn't mean you have to be a workaholic and be 'perfect' every day, it’s being true to yourself, your needs and your boundaries.

What does the lilac colour mean to you?

To me, it’s the combination of feminine energy and masculine energy. Feminine energy is nowadays associated with pink whereas the masculine is with blue, but this was the opposite in the nineteenth century. The way we experience colours is super subjective and culturally influenced. I like to play with these gender stereotypes. Everyone exists out of a combination of both

energies, it’s a big theme in tantra: getting in touch with both of your energies. Lilac or purple also stands for transformation, creativity, and spirituality. Lilac often portrays a child or a child-like imagination, a more naive version of our adult selves. I don’t see naivety as something negative, it’s an open attitude towards the world.

Pieter Jennes

An apple can’t be tired

Pieter Jennes is a painter based in Antwerp. His paintings are a collage of impressions and a homage to the little absurdities that shape our everyday life. Colours and shapes resonate in the stories, the moments, and the starting points for his work. What are his characters talking about? Are they discussing something important or just talking nonsense? Pieter guides us through his work, showing us a collection of narratives and anecdotes.

The story of this painting is about the Bulldozer exhibition of 1973 in Moscow. It was organised by a group of underground—‘underground’ because their art was seen as modern, art was supposed to serve society back then—artists that were not members of the Russian artists’ union.

The city didn’t allow them to use any exhibition spaces, so the group found themselves a patch of land outside of the city. The day they arrived with their work to set up the exhibition, a group of policemen awaited them. The police started spraying water canons and drove bulldozers over their paintings (hence the exhibition’s title). They apparently also tried to burn the paintings down.

Although it’s a very political story, I am more interested in the visualisation of what happened. I don’t want to make political statements, I prefer to paint a contemporary, romanticised narrative.

I’m curious to hear the stories behind your works. What was the story behind The Garden Hose for example?
Pieter Jennes

I always have a few big pieces that I use to tell a story when I create a new exhibition. I try to fit smaller paintings between the big ones because I don’t merely feel like making power statements. You can have nouns but if you want to make a sentence you also need adverbs, articles, and pronouns,... The big paintings wouldn’t stand as powerful in the space without the smaller pieces supporting them.

Until the 1970s, there used to be a solitary, ancient tree that people used as a landmark in the desert of Niger. At a certain point, someone drove a car into it and the tree died. I think that is such a tragic story.

Your titles are stories in themselves! How do you choose those?

Looking for titles is a bit like buying something at the supermarket: let’s say oranges. While looking for them, I bump into a bunch of other products: milk, cornflakes, etc. By the time you’re checking out, your basket is filled with all kinds of ‘products’: stories, words, sentences, anecdotes,... you think you didn’t need it, but you end up using it anyway.

These people in freefall form beautiful images

There’s this one painting I made with a cat climbing in a tree, one on a branch, one being held by a man, and another one running out of the frame. But what are these cats actually doing in the woods? And is the guy rescuing the cat, or dumping it there? The title of the painting is Things That Happen When The Sun Goes Down. It sounds positive but also negative, it creates confusion. I want to give a direction to that confusion, not making it necessarily explanatory. But it doesn’t always have to be difficult. Fresh strawberries—the painting that is currently on view at Art Basel in Miami—is about a man that falls in front of a sign that says ‘fresh strawberries’. Therefore the titles are almost always an incentive for an atmosphere in the work.

What meaning do the tiles have for you?

The tile pattern shows up in a lot of paintings, it’s a bit like the leftover tiles that you try to build a path with in your backyard. You can use it as a road to walk from painting to painting. In combination with the geese, it becomes a big goose game. Same for the Grand Route markings on the trees: they appear in different works and you can use them to travel from painting to painting (or from collector’s to collector’s house). People falling from the sky.

What else, except for other paintings and artworks, brings you inspiration?

When it’s 4 am, after a party (usually the Foam party in Ranst), the moment that people are drunk enough they get encouraged to do stupid things, lose their teeth and try to jump off trash cans... These people in freefall form beautiful images. Then, very late, biking between the fields to get home feels quite like a hallucinatory experience. I think it’s also an echo of that.

What’s the first record you bought?

The first single I ever bought was ‘Milkshake’ by Kelis.

If you could be famous, what kind of celebrity would you be?

Definitely a reality-tv star.

Who is the most underrated artist/ travel destination?

I would recommend people to travel to China at least once in their life, it's an amazing experience.

What is the key element of your morning routine?

Making sure my curvy cat, Monty, is fed and petted.

When you think of your safe space, what do you imagine?

My friends <3

Where do you get inspiration to create your art?

When talking about personal work, I was mesmerised by the movie High Life by Claire Denis, it's an absolute fiction cinema masterpiece in my opinion. My latest commercial shoot was inspired by the song 'Vroom Vroom' and the album Crash by Charli XCX.

What is the most meditative activity to try out?

Honestly, I don't do anything meditative, all is chaos in my head. I quite like having a lot on my mind, it keeps me entertained.

When was the last time that you had to fake laugh?

I would never!

Schaamte was a performance I made with one of my best friends about shame. It was my graduation project for scenography. The drawings are for a project that is coming in February.

I'm a freelance set designer and architect. I currently work a lot in the Netherlands and Flanders. In addition to my work in theatre, I also follow a Master's degree to become a teacher. And besides all of that, I also try to be a DJ!

In one of the Olydorf bungalows in Munich.

What do you wanna share with us?

My series of photographs, entitled Paruresis. Paruresis is the fear of using a public restroom. Last year I had to overcome it when I got diarrhoea in the midst of a party. To me, these pictures describe the combination of partying but also feeling uncomfortable.

Tell us, what do you do in life?

I kinda just walk around on this planet and observe its ridiculous happenings. By paying attention to the details I try to seek the beauty of it all. I also like to play around with language a lot (which basically means I make terrible jokes haha).

What do you like best about your place?

My walls which are fully covered by inspirational pictures compete with my high ceiling which gives me a sense of a voluptuous space.

What’s your favourite pastime?

Experiencing existential crises through watching an excellent movie.

Any guilty pleasures?

Pancakes from Aldi and chocolate milk.

What do you wanna share with us?

A feeling that never goes away, sometimes it will lie draped on the floor and then unfold again and be lifted to the heights when stimulated

Tell us a bit more. This work consists of a picture I made some months ago in the house from my grandmother we have to clear. She was very religious and had her own chapel in her house. A religious sculpture was missing under the draped fabric. I found this a very theatrical and interesting situation so I made a work out of it by photographing this and putting it back in the textile by weaving it on a tc2 loom. I connected the title words A feeling that never goes away, sometimes it will lie draped on the floor and then unfold again and be lifted to the heights when stimulated These words translate the feeling of losing loved ones in my life.

Tell us, what do you do in life?

I am a visual artist working primarily with textiles. Furthermore, I am also a jewellery designer.

What do you like best about your place?

Living on a boat is very nice and adventurous, and although it's sometimes not an easy way of living, I still love a lot of things about it. The water is really nice in the summer. I have an enormous private pool, it always feels like I'm on vacation. I love the view, the close contacts with neighbours and also the fact I live with the people I love.

What’s the first record you bought?

If I have to be really honest, the first CD I bought when I was really young was KUS, a Dutch girl band. Kind of reminds me of K3.

Any guilty pleasures?

I love singing, sometimes I put on karaoke music videos and give a performance to myself.

Have you experienced any regrets recently?

I regret not being better at making decisions.

Where do you get inspiration to create your art?

I get a lot of inspiration from my personal deep thoughts about what's going on in my life. When I write these thoughts down, I start to play with the words and connect them in my mind to textile and in which way these words will change in meaning when placed on textile.

What is the most meditative activity to try out?

For me, that's being creative in all of its different ways. Cite a line of your favourite lyrics.
