intro

Let’s get digital As we tend more and more towards the incorporeal and disembodied, the ethereal in the ether, that song comes back to haunt the furthest recesses of the mind: a sweet, chirpy voice, crooning improbably about getting physical. Possibly, as we come to the inexorable surrendering of our fleshly selves to the firmament of the infobahn, our proclivity to struggle kicks in like a death rattle. In this new world, however, you can participate in possibility; in fact, the possibility is in you. No reason why I wouldn’t hear your body talk – that is the entire point of our new format. So fear not: let’s get digital.

This guy doesn’t need any introduction. Formerly known as Oaktree, Adriaan De Roover has already made several EPs and has been experimenting with field recordings, classical instruments, performing with bands, using synthesizers et cetera, resulting in his typical laidback electronica and immersive atmospheres. This year he not only changed his artist name to his given name, but he’ll also release his first full album.

or m ee f e fr s ar

Seems like Democrazy are about to serve us a beyond-cool line-up this October. First up, Vancouver-based indie punk quartet Dumb, self-described as ‘post-apocalyptic corporate survivalists with outrageous dexterity’ are sure ready to tear down the scene with their rough distorted guitar riffs and dark witty lyrics tackling the neverending perks and downsides of a nightlife ecosystem. Then, an absolute must, Stef Chura, the Detroit indie rocker with an assured voice flaring in defiance, deftly tacking between grunge pop and alt-rock. Her latest forceful album, Midnight, was recorded and produced by Will Toledo of Car Seat Headrest. Toledos’s presence on the album gets to its peak on the compelling track ‘Sweet Sweet Midnight’, where the musicians sing in a magnetic duet.

This month, MONTAGE will be celebrating the release of Helenah’s debut album on cassette. The line-up will be completed by MONTAGE’s mainstay épong and Rest Now!’s Tristan. Helenah’s debut is a diverse collection of tracks that playfully navigate through all kinds of genres across the hardcore continuum. By using samples of his own voice or giddily modulating guitar riffs until they sound like a kazoo, Helenah manages to deliver an album that is both beautiful, experimental and fun.

Crystallmess Christelle Oyiri is truly a jack of all trades. She performs as a musician and DJ under the moniker Crystallmess, but she is also a critical thinker and writes articles on music and politics. When we talked with Oyiri, she was staying in London after playing Corsica Studios, where she ‘turned the ambient room into a rave room and shut shit down’. Always concerned with her community and why she does things, we had an interesting talk about her new project Collective Amnesia: In Memory of Logobi, in which she tackles less talked about, but oh-soimportant subjects.

28

Interview by Wannes Dewit Photos by Irwin Barbé, shot in Paris

29

Can you tell us something more about Collective Amnesia: In Memory of Logobi? CM: Collective Amnesia is a multidisciplinary performance, which combines video, sound, singing, narrating and DJ-ing. It’s about the history of Logobi, a dance and music genre. It takes its roots from Coupé Décalé, which was born on the Ivory Coast. Logobi is like the version of Coupé Décalé that was made by the Africans who had just arrived in Paris. Why is the project called Collective Amnesia? CM: It’s called Collective Amnesia for the very reason of forgetting about things, but in a very

30

intentional matter, about hiding your past. At first I wanted to do a theatrical piece about Logobi, but it didn’t happen the way I wanted it to. A lot of former dancers I interviewed really didn’t want to talk about it, even though they used to be well known in the scene. That’s when I thought that maybe I should tackle the fact that people don’t want to talk about Logobi, instead of the genre itself. Collective Amnesia was me documenting and trying to make sense of why people would try to do that. But don’t get me wrong, it’s not a documentary. It is a highly spiritual ceremony.

The project is really about the unapologetic. They were born in sonic power of Logobi and how it France, so they have their birthwas a very healing movement. Jackie Mendoza Jackie Mendoza was born and raised in the border city of Chula Vista, California. LuvHz, her debut EP, was recorded alongside Rusty Santon (Panda Bear, Animal Collective, DJ Rashad), and blends the cultural influences of her hometown and her motherland of Tijuana, Mexico – an eccentric mix of electronic pop, Latin-driven dance beats and vibrant soundscapes. We sat down with her to talk about long-distance relationships in the digital age, the Myspace deletion fiasco, and turning the page.

35

Interview by William Markarian-Martin Photos by Jill Verhaeghe, shot in NYC

W:

You’re originally a ukulele player, right? Was that your first instrument? J: My first instrument was piano. My mom would take me to lessons when I was about four years old but I would hide under the piano and I didn’t pick up the ukulele until high school. I play other instruments when I record; guitar, bass and autoharp. But mostly ukulele… and I play an electric ukulele live. W: When did you get into making music digitally? J: I started making music digitally around the time GarageBand was first installed on Mac computers. I would go to my friend Grettel’s house and we would make songs and record with GarageBand and we posted our music on MySpace under the name ‘Audiosyncrasy’. This was in middle school, but it wasn’t until my sophomore year of college that I was introduced to Ableton, and then I started making my own beats and arrangements. W: I tried finding my old Myspace profile recently. Do you still have those recordings? J: I checked as soon as the Myspace deletion fiasco happened and everything was gone :( W: How does technology influence the way you make and play music? J: Sometimes I feel like I rely

37

on technology too much when I make and play music. But it’s influenced the way I write and opened up possibilities to create a sound that was unique to me and my experiences. I used to have a vlog and record covers and post them on YouTube, and later on started uploading original songs to SoundCloud. It’s helped me connect with people and share my music globally and I’ve been able to collaborate remotely. But it also has its downfalls; even though it’s a solo project, it’s like I’m in a band with my computer and midi controllers and I hope they won’t suddenly shut off during a set. W:  How do you respond to the downfalls? Do you ever feel the need to withdraw from the digital? J: It’s weird but I think it’s where I feel most comfortable, or I’m very used to living in that space. There are days where I don’t feel like looking at my computer screen and I’ll solely write on guitar or ukulele. W: ‘De Lejos’ is about your long-distance relationship with your girlfriend… I wanted to ask about your experience with that? How did engaging with someone digitally impact the relationship? J: Even though we were far away, technology made communication very accessible and we kept

38

in touch all day through FaceTime and texting. ‘De Lejos’ is the story of how we met and our long-distance relationship. It was a delicate time but we were able to get to know each other and become intimate in alternative ways. W: ‘Your Attention’: is there a story behind the unrequited online love that the song is about? J: It’s a song about a breakup, cutting communication with that person, and wanting to reconnect with them. It’s the oldest song on the EP. I wrote it in 2015. W: I know you’ve spoken quite a bit about working with Rusty Santos. Is there anything else you want to say about working with him? J: I feel really lucky I met Rusty. I had a hard time finding a producer I could trust and work well with. I didn’t have to explain what I had in mind for the music, he got it right away and added his own flair to it too. We ended up recording ‘Mucho Más’ and ‘Puppet Angles’ in the studio kind of out of nowhere. W: You’ve said that ‘Mucho Más’ is about there ‘being way more out there’ and the ‘what’s a mystery now will make sense eventually’. What do you think is out there? J: The song is about overcoming depression. When you’re going through it, it’s hard to see the positive side of things. Once the depression fades away, it’s like cracking a code or turning a page.

39

Instead of thinking, Why do I feel this way? I think, I’m glad I’m on the other side now.

épong Roaming the modern club culture of Brussels’ hedonistic urban jungle, MONTAGE resident épong is already known for the near paralyzing gravity of his emotional soundscapes, erupting with riotous energy from his debut record Oprichnik. Drenched in dissociative darkness and the bliss of momentary oblivion, épong’s sonic language is a rapturous melodic adventure through dense synth lines, distorted glitch and disorienting experimental electronics, amongst a whole swathe of other genres. In December, épong is set to release his new EP, Drank, his most dance-oriented work so far. To quench our thirst for an otherworldly blend of avant-garde club music and moody soundscapes, we caught up over Skype to discuss the emotional rollercoaster of making music and to get a sneak peek of what awaits on épong’s horizon this year.

Sarah& Charles artist

Sarah & Charles’ work is multidisciplinary, comprising installations, sculptures, videos, performances and photography. They are ready to throw themselves into every form of art that crosses their path. But there’s a common thread. Subjects such as fact versus fiction, make-believe and the suspension of disbelief are often examined through their work. We visited their studio in Brussels to talk about Sarah & Charles’s In The Hands Of Puppets, their exhibition at Be-Part.

45

Interview by Jozefien Wouters Photos by Tiny Geeroms

You’ve been working as a duo for the past 15 years. What makes your collaboration so successful? C: We’ve always worked together, but at the beginning we used our own names and worked in different fields. I was more into performing arts and music, while Sarah tented more toward the visual arts. S: Charles soon started to intervene in my work. After my studies at Sint Lucas we decided to apply at HISK together. They gave us an ultimatum: if we stopped working together, we would both be dismissed. So basically, we had no choice. (Laughs) Eventually we got rid of our surnames and in 2004 we made our first work as Sarah & Charles. C: The way we collaborate has changed a lot over the years. We learned to trust each other’s work. At first we did everything together: we literally went to Brico together to discuss which screws we were going to buy. Nowadays we work on different projects without losing the force of our collaboration. Our taste is so compatible: when we watch a film, we both like the same scene. S: I only adjust his colours behind his back. Charles is a bit colour blind, so he doesn’t even notice. (Laughs)

46

How did the multidisciplinary aspect come into your work? C: It just happened. Every project requires its own medium, and we took the freedom to switch between different forms of art. S: We went through a phase in which we asked ourselves if we were allowed to work that way, because most artists are either a painter or a filmmaker. But we have completely outgrown that doubt. Sometimes we’ve prepared an idea and visual language before deciding if it’s going to be a performance, a short film or a sculpture.

47

48

It’s purely instinctive. For our exposition at Be-Part we made a computer-animated film for the very first time, just because it felt like the right thing to do. A common theme in your work is the boundary between reality and fiction. What do you find so interesting about that? C: There are seven billion people on this earth, but for me there is only one reality and that’s my own. Everything you tell me is fiction, in a way. In fact, there is more fiction than reality. S: For In The Hands Of Puppets we went to a psychiatric centre and talked to patients suffering from psychosensitivity, but we also invited artists to our studio.

We asked both groups about the boundary between what is real and what is not, and they had a lot in common. In both groups, many suffer from not being able to distinguish fiction from reality. On the other hand, we also see it as something poetic. To lose yourself in fiction often stimulates creativity. Social media makes those boundaries even more indistinct. S: The title also refers to our relationship with smartphones. You could ask yourself, Who’s in control? Are we the ones dominating our phones, or are we the puppets? C: We’re not resistant either. We try to be transparent and use social media to share behindthe-scenes images from our projects, but even those are completely fake. I’ll move a jar of paint because it looks better. Social media is confusing, and you always have to be careful and critical with what you see, especially now that technology is capable of creating very realistic deep fakes. Would you say your work is an opinion or an observation? S: That’s a difficult question. We like to claim it’s mainly an observation, but I guess we do a bit of moralising.

Wokoundou records soundcloud.com/philoulouzolo-wokoundo

Wokoundou is an electronic music label rooted in Afrofuturism and sci-fi, created by Wokoundou’s guardian and protector Philou Louzolo from Rotterdam. The label will focus on traditional pan-African music within the realm of a more obscure, sci-fi and techno sound hereby debunking the preconception that African music always sounds tropical and happy. Louzolo warmly welcomes his audience to perceive all kinds of African music with a multiversal mind. The first release by Louzolo himself, called ‘Shinobi Of Wokounou’, represents Wokoundou’s intergalactic, diverse sound of house, acid, dancehall and South-African music, influenced by Drexciya, Black Motion and The Matrix. Louzolo can be regularly found at big festivals like DGTL or Lowlands, but also in the more cosy settings of Red Light Radio or De School.

As digital newsletters seem to be on the rise, the sharply curated Toerist Modernist is a recent favourite. Launched by Ghent-based Gerlin Heestermans a couple of months ago, Toerist Modernist devotes itself to securing access to modernist buildings and organises tours for small groups. These buildings, architectural beacons built in the mid-20th century and remnants of a certain ingeniousness of their time, usually only open their doors on rare occasions. Recent tours included visits to House Jozef Schellekens (Turnhout) or Renaat Braem’s house (Deurne). Often welcomed by the owners of the houses themselves, these informal visits are pretty exclusive and are a great way of exploring the spaces, interiors, objects and artworks inside. The tours are usually in Dutch but hey, I’m sure your fellow attendees will be happy to translate.

Les Monseigneurs @lesmonseigneurs

With a strong graduation show at LUCA (Ghent), design studio Les Monseigneurs has set the bar for itself and is currently in the running for a BKRK award. Founders Victor and Thomas, a graphic designer and a textile designer schooled in Ghent, have educated themselves in the art of artisanal weaving and transform digitally edited imagery into impressive wall pieces. As ‘gardeners of a magical garden’, their tapestries feature type, fauna and flora in lavish sizes (they covered an entire room at their LUCA show). It feels royal, and smart. The multitude of pieces and processes reveal this is an ongoing project, one we’re more than happy to see unfold over time.
