intro

Cold Feet The weather notwithstanding, we’ve all felt it: a cold creep of doubt on the back of the neck, a sudden flush of uncertainty on hot cheeks, a sickening churn of a stomach heavy with regret. The body feels what the mind knows, and sometimes the figurative easily confounds the literal. Nobody likes it when plans flounder, when confidence falters, when foregone conclusions sit on the metaphorical fence. The trajectories we outline for ourselves may seem set in stone, but only because pride is hard to swallow. These stones are mental, though, and the cold feet you feel right now might just be a warm-up for what you’re really going after.

With a cache of worthy lyrics under his belt, Chris spits each word with a steady, placid and rhythmic confidence. Chris’s beat carries the deep bass snarl of mid-’80s American rap, all interwoven with a dark penetrating synth. Expect choking-levels of tough street energy!

Flat perspectives, recurring motifs, colour planes and characteristic tragi-comic figures are a common thread in the visual art of Nel Aerts, which is comprised of different media, such as drawings, textiles, acrylic on wood, sculptures and film. In The Waddle Show, the figures become the audience of a stage in the middle of the exhibition space, on which a new series of uncommonly stacked object-sculptures are presented.

2 Times Nothing Don’t judge a book by its cover. 2 Times Nothing might appear to be the band with the most trivial name in the country, but in reality they’re Belgium’s finest. They’ve been playing together since childhood, which becomes apparent when you hear their music. Not shy of merging their instruments with electronics and effects, you can hear fragments of late-period Miles Davis in their music, mixed with a touch of Aphex Twin and Four Tet. We sat down with four members of the band. It was freezing cold, our toes were like ice cubes, the heating was broken, so we met around a bowl of boiling soup and discussed the meaning of the past, ideas for a future EP and having a residency at Volta.

youth try to innovate. Without the youth and their new ideas, cultures starve. If the music doesn’t have a future, its past becomes meaningless. You’ve already collaborated with producers in the past for your Uskumatu EP. Are you interested in something similar for the future? Arto: Yes definitely. I’ve always said that I would love to make a volume 2 of Uskumatu, with a bunch of remixes. I like the concept a lot. For Uskumatu, we gave one of our songs to five different producers who did what they liked with it. This was nice, but I think it could work even better if we came with a fixed idea next time, explaining what we want, what Uskumatu means, telling a story around it. Jacob: Recently, we’ve tried to work in the opposite direction. We took songs from a producer and arranged them for our band, giving them our own touch. Are there certain producers that you’d like to work with for Uskumatu, vol. 2? Jacob: We haven’t really thought about that. If local producers would like to collaborate or remix one of our songs, they should definitely give us a call. We always look for ways to strengthen the Belgian scene. It’s very important.

Most of you study jazz at the Conservatory of Antwerp. How has that influenced your music? Thomas: We do study jazz, but we’re not only studying traditional jazz there. We’re open to contemporary things as well. It’s amazing, though, that we get the opportunity to learn from such amazing musicians. Jacob: The step from the Kunsthumaniora to the conservatory was a big one, since the education at the conservatory is much more extensive. The music that we used to write at the Kunsthumaniora got described as jazz, but with a twist. Our music came out of this place, trying things on our own and not getting taught every little detail. It is almost 2020, is a jazz education still worth it? Thomas: I think it’s really important to hear in someone’s music that it was inspired by the past. After the study of tradition, you have to go on an expedition. What are my influences? What do I want to do? It’s kind of like looking for yourself. Jacob: It’s true, jazz is the cornerstone of most music around us. You really feel this when you study the music. Good knowledge of the past also makes innovation easier. It’s really important that the

Jorick: I’d love to see what Maxwell Sterling, ssaliva and Hexagon Brozart could do with our material. You guys have a residency at the music venue Volta at the moment. Tell me about that. Jacob: Yes, Volta is a very inspiring place. You’re surrounded by a lot of amazing musicians who are working very hard on new material as well. We also got the opportunity to get feedback from some amazing musicians. That’s how we got in touch with Bert Cools, Niels Broos and Jamie Peet. Thomas: Youff is there, Bombataz as well, a z e r t y klavierwerke… It’s really the place to be. Where do you get inspiration for new music? Thomas: AAN/EOP are a big inspiration for me. It would be cool if we could try our hand at improvising full songs, like they do. We could prepare this by looking for sounds beforehand, or agreeing on a certain vibe. We could play completely free and just look at what happens in the moment. Jacob: Improvising is something that we’ve missed in the past. We’re definitely going to work on that. Do you feel like you get supported enough as emerging artists in Belgium?

33

Maurice: Yes, but we also got lucky. Lefto opened a lot of doors for us, for example. Now is the time to show what we’ve got, to show everyone that we’re here to stay. We aren’t the 16-yearolds we used to be any more. Arto: Moodprint was also a big help. He came across a video of a concert of ours, after which he arranged a studio session for us. He supports us a lot and also made a remix for the Uskumatu EP. We keep in touch. Any albums you would recommend for our readers? Thomas: The newest from Robert Glasper, Fuck Yo Feelings. Oh my god. It’s mental. Maurice: Tributary Tales by Gerald Clayton is amazing, but I think that Aphex Twin and Pudding oO are the artists that we as 2 Times Nothing have listened to the most. Jacob: Finding Gabriel by Brad Mehldau. The Lounge Lizards are also great. They’ve really turned a scene that was dying upside down and brought it back to life in a very brutal way.

SD

You just released your first EP, Lov’em All, a result of six years of experimentation. How does it feel to finally have it out? LK It’s truly amazing! I always felt like I had to do this – not because I’m finished with what I’ve been doing before, but because I want to go further. I’ve been experimenting for years and this project felt a bit like trying to understand what I can propose to the public. SD You’ve called yourself an experimentalist. Have you ever had cold feet about putting yourself out there that way? LK Constantly! I had a secure way of life in Italy – a house, a boyfriend, a stable job, money – yet something didn’t feel right.

36

It’s like you’re fixing yourself into a life because it’s convenient. I couldn’t sleep with the idea of giving up before I ever tried. So I exchanged security for insecurity, and it was hell at first. You come with a lot of childish illusions. I thought I’d present myself to the Conservatory of Amsterdam and they’d say, ‘Yes! We’ve been waiting for you!’ Instead, I heard, ‘You’re not good enough,’ for more than four and a half years. I was lost, because my dreams were broken, but I’ve learnt to face difficulties. It’s about how much you’re willing to give for what you love. There’s nothing that comes easy in life and you better fight

for the right thing. For over 11 years now, I’ve been walking the path of uncertainty. I got used to the uncomfortable feeling of not knowing. My spiritual path helps me a lot. SD There’s an element of spiritual transcendence in your music, too. Not in the religious sense but speaking to the idea of being one with yourself and your surroundings. You’ve emphasised the importance of conscious listening as a way for people to get in touch with themselves. Do you feel that we’ve lost that inner connection? LK I think that not being focused and centered is typical of our society. Personally, I feel this need

37

to reconnect with myself. People are starting to question this idea of being awake, but technology brings us further from finding the answer. There are so many things distracting us from what’s at our core. From sitting with yourself in silence and trying to connect with something metaphysical. You do it not because you want something in exchange, but just to be. I see my music as a means to take people to a space where they can dance with themselves. The idea is not that you’re in adoration of who’s performing, but that you connect with yourself because of the beauty you encounter.

38

SD

Does that have something to do with you describing your music as a ‘ritual’? LK I was thinking about how to create a space where people can reach a state of silence and connect with themselves as part of something bigger. How do you reach a moment in which only serenity and beauty of what you perceive exists, in unison with others? I wanted to bring us in touch with the here and now and to remind us why we’re alive, to create an experience which positively stimulates our soul and intellect, regenerates us and gives us new ways to face the struggles of daily life. The idea of a ‘ritual’ as talking magic and being together while doing that. SD You work with acousmatic music and vocal looping. Can you tell us what that is and how it allows you to realise your philosophy through sound? LK Acousmatic music is really sophisticated. There aren’t any live instruments or performers; the music consists of fixed media audio recordings. During shows, sound is then diffused with speakers through a console. You learn how to cut it, transform it, move it through space, how to create a structure that guides listening. It’s about creating a composition that tells something, abstract or concrete. The creation isn’t

39

guided by rhythm, melody or harmony, but by other parameters. It’s like travelling inside the sound. For the public, it’s an intense fullbody experience, because there’s nothing to see. It’s very meditative because it obliges us for once to just shut up and listen. This is full immersion in sound, so it can be quite overwhelming because we aren’t used to just sitting down and listening to music. It’s always in the background.

M: I’m not a serene or peaceful person. It’s hard to navigate through life every day, but my music is basically me, at heart, to be honest. It took a little while to find ‘my sound’, to narrow my choices down to something that feels natural, something I (almost) don’t overthink. Which instrument have you always wanted to play? M: I wish I could play the guitar. It sounds pretty nice and it’s easy to carry. One Christmas I got gifted a ‘magical lyre’. I liked it very much but I wasn’t very good at it. I had all the VHSs of Beauty and the Beast up until the ’98 one, and there’s this little flute character called Fife, who isn’t liked very much. He’s the ugly duckling with a big heart. I used to want to have him as a friend and to be able to play the piccolo. Are there things you want to pursue musically in the near future? M: I would love to work more with a lot of bowed string instruments for future projects, like a whole string ensemble, to say goodbye for a little while to the Logic Pro that I use. To keep working with my favourite cellist Oliver Coates, keep doing what I do, work on another

You made the big move to Brussels recently. How do you like it and why the heart of Europe? M: Still in an adapting phase. I’m not really a city girl. My neighbourhood is very calm, which I enjoy, and I stay at home most of the time. I like watching the rain fall on my roof windows. But on a more practical note, Brussels is good if I have to go anywhere. It’s very easy to take the train or bus rather than flying. What was it like growing up in the French countryside? Do you feel like it influenced your musical style? Or do you get inspiration more from big cities? M: I grew up in a small town in France, and in the countryside with my grandparents. Moved to a huge city, to then come back to the small town. I liked both for different reasons. I think growing up I used to hate the small town and wanted to get out of there quickly – I feel the opposite now. I definitely get flashbacks of simpler times when you’re a child, where life is a weird rollercoaster of constant new things and innocence. This nostalgia feeds the melancholia that helps me make music. Your music often feels so serene and peaceful. Does it represent your personality or are you completely different from it?

record. I don’t like to rush things; if I don’t have anything to say, I just won’t say anything. Since this month’s theme is ‘cold feet’, I’ve got to ask: have you ever been so nervous you had to blow something off? M: I’m pretty bad with stress management, I must say. I stopped in the middle of a DJ set a long time ago because I had played an Elysia Crampton track way too fast and thought I’d ruined the whole thing so I just pressed pause and left. Pretty stupid, but I really couldn’t handle it. If you had to host a club night which three artists would you definitely book? M: I would book Chicane (UK), John Beltran (US) and Femi (SWE). You studied film studies, right? Which movie scene is your all-time favourite? M: Really hard question. I have a very vague memory of films I watch, even ones that I watched yesterday. I just remember how I feel when I watch a film, that’s what sticks. Then I remember glimpses, kind of like a dream. I love Fantasia (W. Disney), The Piano (J. Campion), Orlando (S. Potter), American Beauty (S. Mendes), Palacios de Pena (G. Abrantes & D. Schmidt), Heavenly Creatures (P. Jackson), L’Effrontée (C. Miller), Eternal Sunshine (M. Gondry)… The list could go on. But okay, if I have to pick something that

43

resembles a scene, I would pick a short film, ‘Life’, by Pelechian. Which movie would you like to score one day? M: The Piano by Jane Campion. Although, most films I love are the ones that don’t have too much music in them… Much harder to make a good film without music, right? If you had to pick a colour to describe your music, which one would it be? M: Maybe a soft foggy pink. If you had to choose one dish to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be? M: Spicy tuna onigiri. Which emoji are you? M: The cloud one.

Nel Aerts artist

Coconut heads on top of dragon figurines on top of onion jars. Sitting in between similar towers of fun, we asked Nel Aerts about her new exhibition at M Leuven, called The Waddle Show; a counteract, and looked for the meaning of her collected objects, such as the salt and pepper shakers disguised as an Aspirin tablet and a Martini glass.

45

Interview by Louise Souvagie Photos by Tiny Geeroms, shot in Antwerp

For The Waddle Show, you made an arch out of a collage that was used as the invitation for your previous exhibition, Der Schlangenbeschwörer (the snake charmer) at Kunsthalle Lingen in Germany earlier this year. Why? N: I wanted to suggest that the artist is a sort of snake charmer within the context of a studio, hoping to provoke a dance or a struggle. I also see it as the relationship between an artwork and its spectator: a good artwork should seduce or provoke. The Waddle Show refers to the balancing act of waddling on one side, but also generates the character of a theatrical Broadway show. I’m also just fond of the word ‘waddle’. I try to look for a linguistic appeal, like in Der Schlangenbeschwörer. It seems to be a tendency among artists to collect and make work by displaying a selection of their collected objects. Is your practice based on your collections? N: The collection was definitely the source of my latest works. However, I wouldn’t call it a pattern. Mine was very deliberately construed. But it’s certainly true that artists tend to surround themselves with all sorts of funny or triggering things. For example, an artist like Martin Kippenberger used to find interesting objects and sign them. As such, he made them his own and presented them as an edition.

46

It’s an interesting stance. But that’s the beauty of all that’s possible in art. Vaast Colson [artist and partner of Aerts] and I collect rarities from cafés and artworks by other artists. We often exchange works with other young artists/friends, and hang them next to works by established artists. The loss of hierarchy pleases us – the thought that they can coexist like that. One of the images you repeat a lot is ‘the eye’, an interesting theme as a painter: the spectator being you yet also an audience, looking at something, being looked at… Can you elaborate on that?

47

48

N: I always question the position of the character in a painting towards me as the artist. I feel like I make figures who look back at me, or who look at each other. Picture a scene at a bar where people sit around, whether they decide to interact or not – so interesting! To me, it’s also the appeal of Waiting for Godot: what are these characters doing? What’s their relation towards each other, and to the spectator? What does a day at the studio look like for you? N: There’s a very high barrier to cross whenever I want to start painting. Sometimes I spend a whole day sketching in bed. When I’m lucky, I get to the point of holding a brush [Laughs]. Sometimes I run downstairs to work, only to turn around in the corridor and go back up. I physically can’t. And sometime later, I won’t be able to leave the studio. The initial struggle towards a work is bizarre, because once you’ve gone through it, you’re fine. I always manage – eventually. Some of these works have been here for a long time, the battle is ongoing, but you’re not up for battle every day. I don’t want to sound dramatic about it, the struggle is also part of the fun and sometimes things come to me in a pleasantly

49

direct way too. You wish it was always like that, but that simply isn’t true. I find the relationship between collage and painting very peculiar: when making a collage, I already go through a significant process, so if I simply copy this as a painting – nothing will have happened. It doesn’t interest me to ‘copy’ and thereby produce a mere image. Sometimes, I work with a pyrography machine to burn drawings in my panels, which is a layer not many can eventually still detect. When is a work finished? N: When something happens which I couldn’t have foreseen or when I’ve gained insight. It can’t be pure, there will always be a sense of struggle, something a little off in exactly the right way. But the most important factor to me would always be to have learned something from the work.

Fatima Ferrari soundcloud.com/fatima_ferrari

Less than a year ago, Ramses3000 of Cairo Liberation Front introduced us to Afghanistan-born, Hague-based DJ Fatima Ferrari. A versatile artist questioning both the Western European- and the male gaze by spinning club and booty bounce music drenched with Middle Eastern sounds and queer culture: ‘I like to bring in Middle Eastern percussion works with the LGBTQ club culture. I like to show that it’s possible and complementary to the sound.’ Ever since, she’s played venues like De School and SEXYLAND, but also the heavily underestimated Atlas Electronic festival in Marrakech. Her first set in Belgium still needs to happen, but until then do yourself a favour and listen to one of her occasional Red Light Radio visits.

Tera Octe is the latest addition to the PRR! PRR! roster, which is still one one of the most exciting and enigmatic labels to be found in our capital and on the world wide web. A new Boosterpack series kicks off with an ominous belter of a track called ‘Deafcum’ by Tera Octe. It’s properly introduced by a robotic voice so familiar to the hardstyle scene, announcing DEFCON 1, before a slow perreo rhythm entirely made of rave sounds kicks in. As I have no more information on this track I’ll leave you with the rather intriguing press release: ‘From the core to the outer rim territories, new DJs bloom and spread their skills throughout known space. It is a dark time for Musiq Industry™ as CEOs engaged endless waves of clones and networks started to saturate. Be unique, be boosted, the fate of the Industry™ rests on you!’

Cecilia Lisa Eliceche & Leandro Nerefuh: Haiti o Ayiti Vooruit, Ghent 20-21 Nov, 20:00 €10 vooruit.be

Cecilia Lisa Eliceche and Leandro Nerefuh bring a poetic ode to the island of Ayiti in the form of dance and exercises in decolonisation. Shedding light on the often forgotten Haitian revolution in 1791, they wish to retell history as it really happened, and not merely as it was recorded by the colonisers. Through collaboration with many artists, they celebrate the richness of Ayiti and its Carribean culture. This performance is part of Vooruit & LOD’s 10x10 programme, which supports the work of ten upcoming artists per season and presents their work for €10 per show.

film Video Bar: Wake Me Up at 4:20 AM by Emmanuel Van der Auwera ARGOS, Brussels 6 Nov - €2 incl. first drink argosarts.org free for members

Founded in 1989 in Brussels, ARGOS is an institution and resource for the production and advancement of critical audiovisual arts, as well as for its distribution, conservation and restoration. Video Bar is a brand-new monthly screening format in which we introduce new and old work from our collection. Through a conversational format that emphasises the collective viewing experience of artist film and video, we facilitate novel exchanges about the selected works, be it engaged, personal, and/or informed, while linking them to current developments in contemporary audiovisual arts. The first Video Bar screening presents Belgian artist Emmanuel Van der Auwera’s Wake Me Up at 4:20 AM (2019), a video that uses novel imaging technologies to explore the use of avatars, identity politics and recent internet trends dealing with YouTube celebrities and suicide memes. The video looks strange and peculiar, like a synthetic version of a video diary, and presents an irresistible viewing experience, as it unpacks a new world of images. Through his work, Van Der Auwera unravels the simulation and framing of messages, exploring conceptual and formal filters in the production and dissemination of images. Wake Me Up at 4:20 AM was developed following a residency at the Brain and Emotion Laboratory (University of Maastricht), the institute’s focus on the neuroscience of intersensory perception clearly informing the clinical image world presented in the work. Additionally, Van der Auwera, who currently has solo exhibitions at Botanique and Harlan Levey Projects, is also participating in the group exhibition Open Skies at WIELS, and will introduce work from the ARGOS collection that inspired him.

Tell us, what do you do in life? I’m trying to figure out life [Laughs]. I’m a visual artist, mainly focused on video and photography. In my video performances I aim to question the viewer’s gaze. I like to create visuals that are slightly weird and disturbing, mixing glittery and girly with raw and dirty elements. Recently, I also started to experiment with installations. The rest of my time I spend selling optical frames and sunglasses. What do you like best about your place? I like my place because it feels very homey and it is nicely decorated. There’s a lot of space and light, which is super important to me. I used to live in places where there was either not enough light or space or it was overflowing with stuff. But this house feels just right: I have space to work, space to chill and space to be on my own when I need to. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? A bit of everything. But mostly pop, experimental electronic music and some techno. What’s the first record you bought? Must have been Lady Gaga or Justice. But the first record I got

Also doing yoga and going biking in the hills next to my mother’s house. Any guilty pleasures? Ariana Grande and ice cream. Have you ever got cold feet? One time I ran away from a date in, like, 2016. It was pretty intense and scary. I’m really sorry…xxxx Have you experienced any regrets recently? Most probably yes, but it comes and goes. One thing that always helps me is knowing that given the situation I was in, I did what I thought was best at that moment. I’m very flawed so I make mistakes. It’s important to stay accountable for your mistakes but you learn and grow from them. So for the time being, I’m okay. Which future Subbacultcha show are you looking forward to? I’m looking forward to Playground in Leuven.
