intro

Ay-AyLee-Koo The sound came from far away, a soft vibration in the ether. Through a haze of gossamer clouds, the delicate chirps could be heard tumbling delicately, like feathery snowflakes on a puffy mattress. It was a song that evoked roundness, the velvety state of near-dreams, pushing you into a sweet fog of being and not being. Once more: Ay. Ay. Lee. Koo. A language loaded with the comfort of infancy, taking you in with big round eyes and all the acceptance of an old friend. Whatever it meant, whatever it was trying to say, there was nothing else to do but listen.

Le Villejuif Underground

These talented modern crooners, who mention Usher, Billy Crawford and Ja Rule as musical influences, just released their new album, When Will the Flies in Deauville Drop, 11 witty and irreverent songs, full of humour and irony. Having done our background check, we knew we were about to deal with a gang of hectic and barely reachable kids, either scattered across France or on the road checking-in at as many venues as possible. Still, we packed our pockets with various lucky charms and took our chance.

27

Interview by Hadrien Panelli Photos by Léo d’Oriano, shot in Paris, France

H: So you’re in the van on your way to your second show of the weekend? Nathan:  Yeah bro. We left Epinal and we’re on the road to Annecy. The landscape is pretty nice here… The get-in was at 3pm [it’s 4pm when we start the call] and we have three hours left of driving. Everything is fine in the van because we have fancy drinks and some strawberry pie that we took from yesterday’s catering. We’re touring with our mates from Bryan’s Magic Tears and they’re 30 minutes behind us. Ha-ha! H: Are you driving? N: Oh no, surely not. We have our good friend El Loco to take care of us.

28

El Loco is our bud from Nantes and he’s now living in our Villejuif house where most of the band’s songs were written and recorded. He inherited it because we’ve all left to live with our women. H: Subba gave me a theme for the interview: Furbies. Do you remember them? Antonio, Adam, El Loco: Yeeees. Furbies! Sure we remember them. We had some at the house. Those mean creatures could even talk. A: Adam used to torture those monsters when he was younger. Thomas:  Our Furbies belong to El Loco now. He’s looking after them. H: There’s a lot of humour in your music. It’s not that common nowadays. Do you look up to musicians of the past (Zappa, Beefheart, The Residents)? Adam [aka Peter Porc]:  We definitely dig Beefheart, especially the early recordings and the first album, Safe As Milk (1967). H: Could we compare Nathan to Don Van Vliet and the Villejuif house to the Trout Mask house? Ad: I’d never thought of that but there are definitely some links between the two. It was for both bands a communal space of living and creation... But man, with Van Vliet it was more about sequestration than fun.

H: What about your vision of rock music in Belgium? Ad: I have one thing to say: BRONT! N: And our friends from Cocaïne Piss. We have the same booking agent in France. H: The ’90s were a special time for you, right? Ad: Oh, for me yes. I started playing music in the ’90s. Your question reminds me of an anecdote. When I was a teenager, I went to see Blood Arm at La Maroquinerie and I was crowd surfing to the stage when I spit on the singer while he was on the ground. The crazy thing is that this guy interviewed us in Berlin last year. I showed him the video of my glorious moment. He was shocked!

29

H: Are you excited to come back to Liège in March? N: Sure man. The last time we came, we trashed the place. This time will be even better. Ad: We’ll avoid eating in a friterie. When we played in Ghent, we had some issues with a Turkish frites seller. Nathan threw a chair in the air in the snack bar and the guy called the cops. Nathan was finally held in custody for a few hours… H: Can we end with some recent film or music references that you want to share? EL: Toy. T: Kaaris. A: Bryan’s Magic Tears. N: In terms of movies, you should check Mandy with Nicolas Cage, made by Benjamin Mendy, you know (lol)! A: I’ll go for Heaven Knows What by Benny and Josh Safdie.

Ms Nina Jorgelina Torres, also known as MS Nina, is a pioneer in the peachy NeoPerreo scene. With her liquid honey sound and feminism-flavoured lyrics, she unwraps reggaeton and trap music from the overly maledominated cultural norm. Her stirring sounds and aesthetic shine a much-needed light on inclusivity and sexism in music.

Sirr Tmo It’s freezing in Chicago when we’re on the phone with Sirr Tmo. The DJ, dancer and producer affiliated with the Teklife crew – DJ Spinn, Traxman and the late DJ Rashad – calls himself an ‘aspiring artistic scientist’. He talks passionately about footwork culture and has a clear vision of what the scene should look like both in its cradle, Chicago, and worldwide. He speaks like he dances, with twists and turns, fast and energetic. Time to check his temperature ahead of the performance at Bouge B in Antwerp.

Interview by Hannes Rooms Photos by Lyndon French, shot in Chicago, USA

H: What’s the state of footwork in Chicago these days? ST: The scene digressed. People haven’t seen monetising opportunities here. Other people have been able to make money out of footwork, but this is the hood, people don’t see beyond local events. But it’s redeveloping. Just a few months ago, a group of leading figures – the Chicago footwork coalition – came together to bring structure and professionalism to the community. Basically putting the stamp on Chicago footwork and starting to work with locals again. We’re supporting each other’s events and getting the youth more involved. H: How’s footwork music evolving? ST: We’re gonna take it back to what it used to be. Footwork comes from, but is different than, juke culture. Footwork is battle culture, while juke is rooted in a club environment. We didn’t just play footwork, but also dancehall, R&B, hip hop, grime and old school. Because some people weren’t ready for the music at the time, we made it more acceptable. Then we switched it up. But right now we gonna take it back and make it a bit more friendly to the world. Footwork is gonna change within the next couple years to a point where different genres can fit within it. H: What are you trying to achieve when producing?

36

‘Footwork is a masculine, battle culture to challenge each other’ ST: I make music based on my emotions. I mostly do synth and I wanna be the sample itself in some type of way. I do fusion music. We all take different influences, but I try to mix these in a different way than anyone has already done it. I’m working on hip hop, grime, house and footwork right now. My footwork is definitely different. I was in multiple crews before Teklife and a solo artist at first. I never imitated, I always did it my way. But right now, I’m working to get into Afrobeats in the future or even EDM house. I wanna play footwork at Tomorrowland, could you imagine? H: Your latest release was written during ‘some of the greatest and roughest times of my life and it syncs with my inner being’. ST: Somebody got shot and a bullet went through my window. And a lot

38

‘I wanna play footwork at Tomorrowland, could you imagine?’ of footworkers have died in shootings. That’s that. But I’m more worried about my future. I’m basically at the point where either I take my craft seriously and do it full time or put it down. So when I’ll go on tour, I may stay abroad to perform and make a living out of it or I go back to America and be an average person. I’ve gotta make moves. My father told me, ‘If they say you to stay over there, stay over there.’ H: What can our members expect from the ‘Come on Feet’ show at Bouge B? ST: It’s gonna be a contemporary street dance performance. I’m introducing two footwork dancers from Chicago and Belgian dancers Rabadance, Geoffrey Ananana and Samantha Mavinga are bringing their Afrobeats background to the table. Then there’s Granvat, who will do the live instrumentations and me,

39

being from Chicago footwork, I will be communicating with the dancers and with the musicians. We’ll put on a show with only four days days preparation. H: How would you describe footwork dance? ST: It’s a mixture of all the basic footwork steps from each dance genre. It’s a masculine, battle culture to challenge each other. For example, you dance with closed instead of open hands. It’s spins, glides, tricks and then you have the combos, and if you’re really great you can improvise all of that. But it’s also about crowd pleasing, showing your big moves to attract the loudest yells. Some do it for crowd reactions and some do it for the craft. But in the end it’s all about gaining respect. H: You tweeted: ‘The floor is lava dancing on soundwaves’... ST: [Laughs] It’s a very spiritual vision of contemporary dance. When I footwork, people say it often looks like I’m floating. I’m levitating and not touching the ground. H: Thanks for the interview. Anything to add? ST: I’m in Belgium until the end of April. If any talented dancers read this, link up!

Summer Satana Screams, drum machines, positive storytelling… Summer Satana’s live performances are as haunting and dramatic as they are honest and fragile. Brussels-based self-taught singer, composer and producer Tiphaine Larrosa – her real name – performs on stage with an uncompromising feminist resolve. Noticing a gender gap in the music industry when she was still a teenager at Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, she decided to create opportunities for herself and make her appearance on stage. She hasn’t left it since, and we got the chance to pin her down before her live gig at Poxcat #3 Party.

artist

Lizzy Vandierendonck is a fresh-faced, Ghent-based artist who graduated from KASK in June 2018. Amidst a pile of LPs, in the glow of a pink neon light bar, with soft music in the background and muted rain clattering on the windows, we found ourselves talking about camaraderie, specificity and the art of getting up and just doing stuff. It provides a momentary view into what keeps this artist busy.

Interview by Nanerle Ferket Photos by Tiny Geeroms, shot in Ghent

N: In June you graduated with 1:48 (nachttijd). Can you tell us what your graduation project was all about? : In 2017 I threw a party. I built decorations, there was music – a soundscape was provided by Lieven Martens, and Dennis Tyfus was on the turntables – and of course, I invited some friends. No friends, no party. Back then, I was attracted to the ability of photos to lie. I wanted to play with the concept of FOMO and confuse people. The idea was that the whole affair had to be destroyed. What happened was some of the people who knew of the plan started breaking things down. First, others got mad in response or were simply shocked, but in the end everyone was tearing the place up, only to band together and start building again. I had known I wanted to throw that party and afterwards I liked how things had gone down. It was just that I didn’t know exactly how to move from there and what to do with the space I had to fill afterwards for the presentation of my master’s project. N: About that: I read that by re-using your materials from the party, you were recalling memories? : I did re-use the materials from the party, and I tried to rebuild the scene as it was left months

before. I also made and played a mixtape based on what I remembered from that night. That way the audience, when entering my space, was visiting a recollection from the 2017 party. So I guess in a way my installation did recuperate memories from the party, but I’m not quite sure whether I would have described it like that myself, nor if that description covers what it was. I don’t particularly like abstract expressions, or flowery terms. I prefer specificity. In that sense, I’m happy that I’ve graduated. Talking about my work too much makes me lose focus; things often seem to go far more naturally when I just get up and do.

N: What are you working on now? : I get inspired by the night scene, by partying and by my friends. Don’t get me wrong: I enjoy paintings and sculptures but they don’t necessarily make me want to create things. I’m a doer, I like obtaining skills and working with my hands. During my master’s year I realised I was very interested in building scenery. My newest work is a project in which I am putting all of these aspects – music, friends, building things – together. Bar Camaraderie will be a one-night karaoke bar set in a night shop. The scenery will be crafted by myself and my friends. Guests can come and sing their favourite songs, while I’m directing the movement and placement of decorations and lighting. The experience is a real-life video clip, if you will. N: Do you have any plans after that? : I’m planning on doing an internship for a stage builder to acquire some technical skills. I never really wanted to be an intern for artists because then you work for them. I want to work for me. I’m also thinking of opening my very own club. Recently, I went to ADAM in Brussels and visited Night Fever, an exhibition about club culture from the Sixties till now. I was very attracted to the forms and designs of the Seventies. When I went

there, it suddenly dawned on me: maybe I should just get up and open a club myself. The nightclub as a concept, the culmination of all that inspires me today.

SALON #01 w/ Manara instagram.com/salon.gent

SALON promises to turn the cosy, homely feelings of Ghent’s latest hangout spot, amigo amigo, into a proper club night. To do so, they invite Manara to Belgium once more to showcase her versatile mixing skills. She became one of London’s favourites by grinding hard, both at her NTS radio shows and during swirling live DJ sets. She has the nickname ‘queen of the blends’ because of her effortless shuffles between hiphop, hard drum, grime, UK funky and Bollywood. Some of us might remember her lastminute performance at last year’s KAVIR. Salon #01 takes place on Saturday, 16 March, but the ‘#1’ gives away they’re in it for the long run. Attend the Facebook event for free entrance.

BABYDEMON2006 babydemon2006.bandcamp.com

Spacey raps drenched in autotune pouring straight from some trap house in Aalst, only to be interrupted by gunshot salvos. Not sure if that sounds realistic to you, but it accurately describes BABYDEMON2006’s work. The careless deliverance, emo lyrics and lo-fi productions are of course reminiscent of Bladee, Yung Lean or Uli K, but this demon definitely has some torments of his own. Formerly known as Babysavage, he’s part of the NO PRE$CRIPTION PO$$E together with Ravenwolf and Hydro, and furthermore affiliated with other cloud rappers Flansie and MADCHA. His tracks are popping up and disappearing on Soundcloud faster than you can blink, so keep your eyes peeled for another hazy but hard-hitting release.

film ROBERTA FINDLEY

by Dirk Van Exte rgem

The 12th edition of the Offscreen Film Festival, the annual rendezvous for aficionados of cult cinema, takes place in Brussels from 13 to 31 March. Programmer Dirk Van Extergem is proud to welcome guest of honour Roberta Findlay, not really a household name, but an icon for lovers of sleaze as one of sexploitation’s most prolific filmmakers. From the ’60s to the ’80s she worked as director, actress, cinematographer, screenwriter or distributor on over 40 productions. Her career embraces the heyday of grindhouse cinema in the seedy 42nd Street and Times Square districts of NYC. Like The Deuce, but in real life. She started out as a factotum alongside her then husband, Michael Findlay, specialising in ‘roughies’: sexploitation featuring BDSM, spanking and other ‘non-standard’ proclivities. She took her place in the director’s chair for the first time on The Slaughter (1971), later re-released as the sensational Snuff, with extra sequences added to suggest a real murder had been committed on screen. After Michael’s tragic death, infamously decapitated by a rogue helicopter blade on the roof of the Pan Am Building in New York, she continued on her own, making many X-rated films such as Angel Number 9. She crossed over into horror and made a killing in the straight-to-video horror market of the ’80s with the visceral urban exploitation hit Tenement: Game of Survival. Aged 71, this energetic pioneer is still kicking ass. The Bronx is coming to Brussels!

we visit you

Tell us, what do you do in life? A: I’ve been studying medicine since 2013. At the moment, I’m doing an internship at the forensic medical institute of Liège. I would like to work as a primary care physician next year and maybe work in Italy, with people in small villages close to nature. What do you like best about your place? A: The disposition of my father’s house is continuously changing, we are always moving from floor to floor. There’s always a different atmosphere, I love changing and renewing my home. I also like to host friends while a good album is playing in the background. The space lends itself well to that. What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? A: I’m keeping myself warm this winter with Adore Life by Savages, the last Slowdive, ? by xxxtentacion, Lunar Glyphs by Desolate and Dominique A. Some songs: ‘Fine Mess’ (Interpol), ‘I Feel Free’ (Dilly Dally), ‘Sea as It Glides’ (Julie Byrne), ‘Fall in Love Again’ (The Vagina Lips), ‘Terrible Luck’ (Peter Kernel), ‘Anti-Gravity’ (These New Puritans).

Name Arthur Weber Age 25 Zodiac sign Scorpio Subbacultcha member since January 2019

What’s the first record you bought? A: Life is Peachy by Korn. What’s your favourite pastime? A: I enjoy discovering new music, longboarding, writing about anything (cooking, Haïku, summaries…) and reading. I’m reading Les nourritures terrestres’ by André Gide, a hotspot for pleasure. Any guilty pleasures? A: I love putting jam on BBQ food What was the name of your first teddy bear and what did it look like? A: His name was Gros King Kong. Actually, he wasn’t a gorilla but a black bear as tall as he was wide, hairy with a friendly glance. I miss him like in the song ‘Comment revoir Oursinet?’ by Sébastien Tellier. Have you experienced any regrets recently? A: My end-of-study work was a mess. Which future Subbacultcha show are you looking forward to? A: I’m looking forward to dancing to Theo Parrish’s vibes.
