intro

Strange times today, we know. So many of the terms floating around at the moment have sent positive vibing on a serious hiatus: solitary confinement, lockdown, social distancing... you could make a damn depressing martini out of them – with no olives, though, because the supermarket’s run out. And yet, even as days blur by without the external validation that turns memories into placeholders for the time elapsed, we do indeed plod on. Fresh minds never get confined, and dreams are luckily not bound to the physical jails we strive to keep healthy and, crucially at the moment, separated. None of today’s and (possibly, probably) tomorrow’s delimitations can hold down the nascent worlds of future fancies. Whether they be tangible or imagined, corporeal or immaterial, they are happening and they are very real. Anywho, meet the young hopefuls bringing new life to a decaying order; may their future be a shared one, whether it be within the limits of the physical world we’re bound to, or deep into the infinite abyss of the immaterial portals we’ve been commiserating in.

What do we & our readers need to remember about you? Be focussed on what’s bringing you happiness and drink more water. What is the (near) future bringing you? Fingers crossed, I’m flying to Abidjan, Ivory Coast soon. What are you up to these days? Making beats, playing video games, digging for new music. What artists are you listening to? Petit Maudit, Glia, Zeroh, Medhane. What makes your heart go faster these days? Seeing that justice is a privilege that not everyone has, brings me constant stress. What are you doing daily at 9 pm/9 am? 9 pm: I’d be probably drinking a beer while cooking. 9 am: Doing my daily exercise, eating breakfast or probably just still sleeping.

What would you like to be doing in 10 years? I would like to be having the opportunity to work from a studio in Abidjan while still travelling around Europe.

How do you bring some routine into your days? I try not to bring routine into my days except for the daily exercises thing, haha.

How does the current crisis make you feel? I’d say powerless, I can’t do anything.

What satisfies you? Seeing my friends getting recognition for what they are doing and that 4 pm ginger beer.

Did you have an exhibition/concert/show on your agenda these days? Which one? I usually have a couple of radio shows in Paris and Brussels.

Who is the person that most influenced you throughout your development in life? I’d say Hugo (RIP), a neighbour and childhood friend who shaped me when I was still very young.

Comfort food/speciality dish now? Veggie quiche or any salty pie for the comfort food and stuffed zucchini is my speciality.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned lately? We are the generation of a

Lockdown hobby? I think I’ve discovered that I enjoy cooking tho hahaha.

What do we & our readers need to remember about you? Maarten’s Facebook password: seksonthebeache (plz dont use). What is the (near) future bringing you? We are searching for the crack, the crack in civilization. We are gonna break the crack open and we are gonna dig a path in there. Ramon Yells: ‘Fucking Moses Babyyy.’ Stan: ‘Get ready people, get ready to follow us.’ Maarten: ‘On the way!’ Ferre: ‘Dig through the crack!’ Matthijs: ‘Where the fuck is God in here?’ What are you up to these days? Matthijs: ‘Dig!’ Ferre: ‘Hold on my eeeuhm, my pickaxe is in Maarten’s car.’ Maarten: ‘I don’t have a car anymore.’ Stan: ‘But I do!’ Meanwhile, Ramon’s hands are shaking terribly. What artists are you listening to? Michelle Mixmeister, Zita Swoon, Danny Blue and the Old Socks, Frank Zappa…. And many more crazy humans. Which records are you playing most right now? Shine bright like a diamond by Rihanna and Doomsday by Nero

19

What are you doing daily at 9 pm/9 am? Recovering the parts of the eclipse, charging our reflecting bodies for the upcoming night to enlighten doomsday dreams. How do you bring some routine into your days? We don’t count in days, we count in nights. What does your face mask look like? XXL, cement (bricks); it swallowed us. What satisfies you? Maarten: Walking into the Delhaize and falling in love 5 times.

We are searching for the crack, the crack in the civilization. We are gonna break the crack open and we are gonna dig a path in there

What do we & our readers need to remember about you? My music would be a great place to start. What is the (near) future bringing you? I’ve got a few cool collaborations, songs and a mix file coming up, almost ready to drop. What are you up to these days? Sitting at home, interning at N.E.W.S Distribution and working on lots of sound design & music on the side. What artists are you listening to? Currently listening most to everything touched by Isak Hansen (The Empire Line / Iron Sight / Loverman). He puts so much soul into his stuff and it’s never been as relevant as it is in these times. For the rest, I’d say Charli XCX, AJ Simons and when I’m showering I’m listening 90%of the time to Lil Flash. What are you doing daily at 9 pm/9 am? At 9 am I’m drinking a cup of coffee with my cat on my lap. At 9 pm I’m probably checking the daily items in Nook’s Cranny on Animal Crossing. How do you bring some routine into your days? Due to my internship, I have to wake up early and make a daily

23

video call with my mentor. It saved my sleeping pattern. During the first few months of the lockdown I dedicated myself to making music from 2 pm till 10 pm like a fulltime job. That taught me a lot as well. What’s your utopia? A place where I own a stock Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R. What satisfies you? Playing a role in connecting people through music and art, seeing artists from different disciplines collaborate, creating unity between different scenes. What’s your favourite lockdown film? Started watching Trailer Park Boys since the lockdown started. Would 10/10 recommend the movies and series as well as the animated series. What would you like to be doing in 10 years? I don’t like to set long-term goals but I do hope in 10 years I’ll own lots of different synths & music gear and be a more versatile musician than ever before. I also would love to create opportunities for fellow (starting) artists and help them polish their sound. How does the current crisis make you feel? The lockdown made me spend a lot of time alone which had its

24

25

downsides but also its upsides. Emptiness has hit me sometimes which made me feel very lazy but over time I learned to deal with it more easily. Accepting the occasional emptiness and staying productive or doing research on all types of matters kept me going. I have a very nerdy/geeky side which came in handy while being alone too.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned lately? During the lockdown, I spent a lot of time learning about synth and sound design which is playing a role in how I’m going to further develop my sound. Comfort food/speciality dish now? I got addicted to toast with some yoghurt, avocado and a tiny little bit of salt & pepper on top.

During the first few months of the lockdown, I dedicated myself to making music from 2 pm till 10 pm like a fulltime job Did you have an exhibition/concert/show on your agenda these days? Which one? A few actually, I’d be playing in Aalst, in Ghent as well as on my party concepts in Leuven and Hasselt. Never even got the chance to reveal those events. But I like to think that nothing is really cancelled, it’s just postponed so I hope to be able to share more about this ASAP.

26

Lockdown hobby? Playing Final Fantasy X on my Switch and watching tons of synth reviews I can’t afford anytime soon hehe.

What do we & our readers need to remember about you? Even if I may seem like a pessimist, I still love life. What is the (near) future bringing you? I wish I could answer that question. It's really hard for me to project myself in general, even more so these days. But it is ok, I guess I’ll be alright. I’m more worried about the planet than I am about myself. What are you up to these days? I sleep or listen to ambient music and cry. When I don’t sleep or cry, I am busy in my studio, I weld everything I can find which looks like metal, and I'm helping another artist (Nils Alix Tabeling) with his future projects because his work is incredible. What artists are you listening to? Forever Malibu, Radiohead, Oklou but the lesser-known tracks, Ana Caprix, Boards of Canada… I confess it's been the same for several years now and I really can see myself listening to this for the rest of my life. What makes your heart go faster these days? Sunshine and the smell of welding metal, even if it’s deadly, and maybe that’s why it makes my heart go faster.

29

What are you doing daily at 9 pm/9 am? I try to wake up which is a challenge, then, I oblige myself to answer shitty administrative emails… morning is war. In the evening, I always try to see a friend and forget about my crappy morning. What satisfies you? Reading passages in books that make sense of things I've always thought about but never could formulate. What’s your favourite lockdown book? I've completely devoured Caliban et la Sorcière from Silvia Federici, which I recommend to everyone curious about the Middle Ages, witch hunts and capitalism. All of them are still hot topics. Also Le Jardin des Supplices from Octave Mirbeau, more trashy, though... How do you keep healthy? I’ve given up alcohol except for red wine, I never watch the news and sometimes I go running in the woods. How does the current crisis make you feel? Sad and alive. Sometimes angry. Most of the time, I felt living in a hurry, but since life has taken its course, I think I'll stay on the other side of the fence. I believe more than ever that we need to start rethinking systems, reinvent ways

30

31

of living and start believing, and wait for the second wave. What is the latest/future project you are working on? I'm working on an exhibition that will take place through the NEVVEN gallery in Sweden, I will present some new pieces, paintings and abstract esoteric metal forms based on carnal suffering. If you're up for it, it starts online on 3 July at www.nevven.com

talking about my weird psychology and my fears about the world. I'm incredibly lucky, they might be less. Also, There’s no day passing by without writing or talking to Julia who helps me untangle life, Igor who always teaches me things about the depths of our cosmos, Sarah who makes me laugh a lot and Arnaud, who helps me to make my sculptures stand upright. Humans are fantastic.

I’ve also stopped washing my hair, and now I’m observing the result and telling absolutely everyone about it Did you have an exhibition/concert/show on your agenda these days? Which one? I would have gone to the Supervue Festival in Liège, at the end of July. This and all the other cool stuff I wanted to go to has been cancelled, but if you have any good plans, let me know. Who is the person that most influenced you throughout your development in life? My mother who is exceptional, incredibly attentive, and my father, an inveterate handyman and technical wizard. I can spend hours on the phone with them

32

Comfort food/speciality dish now? Morning boiled eggs forever. Lockdown hobby? I started making music on Ableton and Logic. For the moment, my tracks are very approximate ambient instrumentals and have voices of broken-hearted girls crying non-stop. Always very funny. Otherwise, I’ve also stopped washing my hair, and now I’m observing the result and telling absolutely everyone about it.

What are you up to these days? Teaching, reading, trying to write music and lyrics for a premature project with a dear friend, permanently repositioning my stuffed animals in a formation so that they each have as much access to love and attention as possible. What makes your heart go faster these days? The love for my parents, brother and sister, the warmth between my inner circle of friends, the disruptive force of loving someone. Yet another but a hopefully significant wave of outrage at racism and police violence. Justice pour Adil, Mehdi and Mawda.

67

What’s your utopia? Gilles Deleuze for president! Accompanied by the dismantling of neoliberalism, the fall of capitalism with its intertwined racism and sexism, and the reformations of the educational system to maximise its emancipatory and not its segregating nor disciplinary aspects. What satisfies you? The moment when I can let go of the constant urge to seek fulfilment.

I am taking smalls steps to enrich my commitment as a teacher with a political chapter, by examining and collaborating in the backstage of political decision-making in Brussels. He has set the foundations of my socio-cultural realm of thoughts and pushed me beyond my social barriers. He is the foundation of my entire social and cultural life. He took me out when I didn’t want to leave the house. He made me think critically about what’s important and what isn’t. He showed me what love, empathy, sincerity and caring for each other means. How do you keep healthy? By not fighting the infectious Flemish disease any longer to go cycling in the weekend and embrace it, with all that it brings. What’s one of your sources of inspiration that may surprise people? My students, often I think they

What do we & our readers need to remember about you? My work is a combination of noble black portraits and delicate but rough pen drawings, in which I question and illustrate the complexity of the relation between identity and ancestry. What is the (near) future bringing you? It’s quite unclear, right now I’m allowing myself to create something beautiful by focussing on growth and more exposure. Which records are you playing most right now? Baduizm by Erykah Badu and A seat at the table by Solange, both very powerful albums. What makes your heart go faster these days? Seeing a new generation of black people all over the world unite and try to change the system. What are you doing daily at 9 pm/9 am? At 9 pm during quarantine I’d be eating the food I spent cooking for hours and mostly at 9 am I’d still be sleeping. What’s your utopia? A world that doesn’t only revolve around the preferences of the heterosexual white male and in which every human being is treated equally.

79

What brings you satisfaction? I love ASMR! What’s your favourite lockdown Instagram account? @blackarchives.co What’s your favourite lockdown book? I have a weird obsession for atypical cookbooks, From crook to cook by Snoop Dogg is one of my favourites. How do you keep healthy? I take a break from social media now and then. What’s one of your sources of inspiration that may surprise people? I've been inspired by the abundance of symbolism in paintings of Christian scenes. How does the current crisis make you feel? I have a lot of mixed feelings, I’m lucky that I was in a position to enjoy a paused world for a minute, but I’m also very aware of the fact that I’m privileged to have had support from the government in a blink of an eye, while in reality, our wealth rests on the exploitation of the Congolese population that never received any form of compensation.

Being in quarantine gave me more insight into the way I have been living my life, it forced me to find my rhythm and joy in living more consciously What is the latest/future project you are working on? I’ve created the poster for Dalilla Herman’s play Her(e) which premiered in February at NTGent and now I’m working on this year’s visual identity for Studium Generale Gent. Who is the person that most influenced you throughout your development in life? It’s hard to point out one person, I’d rather say African American culture in general, as an AfroEuropean kid, that was the closest form of representation I got to see on tv. What is the most important thing you’ve learned lately? Being in quarantine gave me more insight into the way I have been living my life, it forced me to find my own rhythm and find joy in living more consciously.

82

Is there anyone in your scene who needs more attention? I don’t really see myself as being part of any scene, but I'd love to see black creatives, in general, get more attention. Comfort food/speciality dish now? Deep-fried homemade chicken nuggets with a sweet chilli-based sauce. Always. Lockdown hobby? Growing plants from cuttings, never thought I’d be doing that, but it’s actually fun and super therapeutic!

What do we & our readers need to remember about you? I’m as much passionate about cooking incredible food daily as I am by photography. If not even more. What is the (near) future bringing you? Focusing on my photographic practice and making a lot of handmade prints in the darkroom. What are you up to these days? Listening to live sessions and discovering new jewellery artists. Which records are you playing most right now? Signz by O.B.F., Divine by Barrington Levy. I’m also obsessed by the debut EP of Crystal Murray called I was wrong. A neo-soul/ R’n’B/electro gem. What makes your heart go faster these days? On a positive side: talking to my mum on the phone or mastering a dish I’ve never tried before. On a negative note: racism, seeing all this police brutality that took all those black lives scrolling on the internet. 1312 over and over. What are you doing daily at 9 pm/9 am? At 9 am I’m either preparing a green smoothie or a mix of hot water, matcha, coconut oil and cinnamon. At 9 pm I’m usually scanning films.

85

Feeling that somebody felt more confident and beautiful through my lens. What’s your favourite lockdown Instagram account? @monicagreatgal, she’s a Dominican descent/New York painter. She’s trying to be very honest about how she feels, and I love how she portrays brown girls in a domestic environment, exploring the concept of spaces in her paintings. What’s your favourite lockdown film? Not a movie but I’ve been travelling by proxy to New Caledonia

Renell Medrano is my g.o.a.t. inspiration regarding black people shooting black people portraits with so much love and respect. What is the latest/future project you are working on? I’m starting a project based on the idea of sisterhood. It’s a relationship that has always interested me. Maria Clara Macrì, an Italian photographer said: ‘I don’t have a sister, maybe that’s why I’m looking for her in every woman’. I felt that. Did you have an exhibition/concert/show on your agenda these days? Which one? I was supposed to take part in a

88

collective exhibition about street harassment in Brussels in May but it’s postponed to October. What will the second part of 2020 bring you? I want to be more confident. I don’t want to feel dissociated anymore when people tell me that they love my work. I have to believe in myself first to feel legitimate. Who is the person that most influenced you throughout your development in life? With hindsight, I would say my inner child. I try to make her comfortable and proud in my daily life. My first and probably the only tattoo is about her. What is the most important thing you’ve learned lately? That mental health is as fragile as the physical one.

What do we & our readers need to remember about you? What an odd question. I guess the passion and energy I invest in music and our projects. I believe a person is constituted by the things he or she does and the people he or she chooses to keep close. What is the (near) future bringing you? If I’d know, I’d sleep better. Last year showed me that as long as you do good things, good things will come to you. Good things aren't always easy though. What artists are you listening to? What a terrible question! As a DJ I often find it hard to pin down specific artists because I mostly think in genres. To name a few artists: Himera, Aïsha Devi, ascendant vierge, HDMIRROR and The Weeknd. Which records are you playing most right now? I can’t really say, it changes every day. I often fall back on Himera because it brings me great comfort. But the last record I listened to was upsammy’s Zoom. I’m a sucker for sound design, and this record is as good as it gets. What makes your heart go faster these days? Not only these days but in general: listening to a song and imagining it

91

blasting through a sound system with all my friends around me. For me, the most representative song for this feeling is the last quarter of Djrum’s ‘Tournesol’. Close your eyes and let your body move. Try it. What does your face mask look like? Just as my regular face, serious and angry. But I always say, even hard-boiled eggs are soft on the inside. What satisfies you? It sounds corny, but hearing that one well-designed dancefloor filler for the first time and being overwhelmed by the endless complexity and the sheer talent of the artist. That’s what keeps me going, that’s my bread and butter. Try ‘Xull’ by Bruce for example, it’s mind- and genre-bending. What’s your favourite lockdown Instagram account? @meta.maur.phos.een is pure eye candy. @carcajv as well. What’s one of your sources of inspiration that may surprise people? I guess Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. They’re both thinkers with extremely powerful, fruitful and flexible theories. Foucault taught me the perspective of historical social constructivism, and Derrida a mindset of poetic never-ending analysis.

92

93

What would you like to be doing in 10 years? Having a co-working, co-living and co-creating space with all my friends, because dreaming is dull when done alone. How does the current crisis make you feel? I’ve never been so sensitive for and furious about the inequalities and cracks in our broken and vile neoliberal world. It only inspires me more to implement mechanisms and stepping stones of change into our projects. Even if they're at the micro-level. Who is the person that most influenced you throughout your development in life? My mom, without a doubt. She’s a single mom, she learned Dutch from scratch, and she worked herself up quite well while raising two kids. She’s the strongest person I know. What is the most important thing you’ve learned lately? How fragile we are, as a person, as a species, and how important care and solidarity is. And how detrimental some societal and global mechanisms are to our well being.

94

As long as you do good things, good things will come to you. Good things aren’t always easy though

96

What do we & our readers need to remember about you? Whatever you’d like. I don’t like to impose things on people about who I am or what I do. Everyone’s impression is different. What is the (near) future bringing you? Little fun projects! Making customised tables and bags, redecorating my atelier/living space, a lot of sewing for new artworks probably. What artists are you listening to? Bambounou, DjRUM, Oli XL, L U C Y and (an alias of Four Tet apparently).

97

How do you bring some routine into your days? I try to wake up early, with the emphasis on the attempt. But like I said earlier, I don’t like to plan things in advance. In my opinion, giving yourself space and time is very important. Take time to think about what you want to do and what makes you happy that day or at that moment. What’s your utopia? This is a difficult question. Because I don’t think about this very often. I usually try to make the best of every situation and eliminate negativity from my life. Of course, you

98

99

can’t have ups without downs. But a world where people support each other instead of rivalry would be pleasant. Being able to accept each other for who we are and what we like to do instead of imposing mandatory standards in every area. What satisfies you? Seeing the result of weeks’ worth of research about how I can make an art piece come to its own with a space or in dialogue with other pieces. Talking on for hours about fellow artists’ work and their interests. Also things like dancing through the night with my friends, that’s one hell of a stress reliever. Being surrounded by people I love and feel safe with and just lose myself in music.

I’m a huge self-analytical person and I think a lot

100

What’s one of your sources of inspiration that may surprise people? Everyday life. I often get little ‘eureka’ moments. When I’m walking through the city by myself, driving my car, being in a conversation or during class. Those are moments where I’m lost in my own thoughts and those often bring the best ideas, solutions or art pieces. What would you like to be doing in 10 years? Something that makes me happy. Probably a combination between something in the cultural sector, such as curating or setting up events, and being an artist. It’s especially important to me that I get satisfaction out of it. What is the latest/future project you are working on? I just finished this project called Bewogen weerklinkende vormen (moved resounding objects) where the main theme is the conversation between colours and shapes, space and the viewer. The next challenge is to find out how those change under each other’s influence. Did you have an exhibition/concert/show on your agenda these days? Which one? I was going to be part of a performance by Noé Soulier in Z33, but because of COVID-19, it got cancelled.

101

Who is the person that most influenced you throughout your development in life? In a not self-centred way, especially myself. I’m a huge self-analytical person and I think a lot. I like to learn from myself, to know how I think and why I think a certain way. What is the most important thing you’ve learned lately? To put things into perspective, let them be what they are. And that’s okay. Lockdown hobby? Sewing, sewing and oh yeah, sewing.

What do we & our readers need to remember about you? Life is a process of growth so I hope people will keep seeing me (and themselves) as something fluid and outside of what society wants us to see. What is the (near) future bringing you? I like to stay busy with the process rather than the result, so I'll just keep going forward step by step, like someone who runs a marathon and at the same time enjoys the run. What are you up to these days? After the quarantine, I started my daily shoots again. I’ve turned my living room into a studio so that has been my main activity. What makes your heart go faster these days? Seeing people come together again and form a community fading the separation, whether it's in bars or at a protest against racism. What are you doing daily at 9 pm/9 am? 9 am: Drinking tea and setting goals for what I want to achieve that day. 9 pm: Picking out a film to watch. How do you bring some routine into your days? Except for movies and tea I don't

103

feel like I need a routine, I prefer spontaneity. What’s your favourite lockdown book? I was planning on doing some intense reading and diving deep into this pile of books I have laying around, but in the end, I’ve spent more time enjoying small and precious things in reality. What’s your favourite lockdown film? Hitchcock's Rear Window, about a photographer who can't go outside so he spies on his neighbours, each of their windows/lives shows a movie in a movie.

What’s one of your sources of inspiration that may surprise people? Things that are perishable and fragile like time, because these characteristics make them precious at the same time. What would you like to be doing in 10 years? Deleting all my photographs to start from zero.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned lately? Staying true to my vision and following my own voice. Is there anyone in your scene who needs more attention? Filmmaker and art director Zoë Boogaerts, because of her giant potential and vision combined with her never-ending love for others.

I’ll just keep going forward step by step, like someone who runs a marathon and at the same time enjoys the run How important are fellow companions now? How do you reach out? The most important of all! I often call my mother to tell her I love her and I try to comfort friends who are having a hard time with advice and humour. What will the second part of 2020 bring you? Love and the energy of starting anew. Who is the person that most influenced you throughout your development in life? Iranian poet Ahmad Shamlou.

Next to this, I will be working on my film and play based on The Divine Comedy. Iris: I’m the only one who’s actually out of school from this year on, which means that I’m confronted with the financial struggles within the cultural field. What is the most important thing you’ve learned lately? Iris: Trees are probably much smarter than human beings. Judith: Trust in your closest friends. Senne: Intimate sharing is the most beautiful form of sharing. Marius: Learning to be alone.

113

Comfort food/speciality dish now? Marius: Shitake, Asian aubergine (baked in semi-sweet soy sauce), peppers, mange-touts, bok choy and soy-burgers marinated in soy sauce, garlic and ginger, coconut and a pinch of lemon topped with sesame seeds. Hmmmm Judith: Gnocchi alla sorrentina Senne: Grilled langoustines with a bunch of red onion and garlic. They are also very nice with a grapefruit-butter sauce. Iris: Dumplings.
