music DâM-FunK + S.A.M. + DJ Masda + more 1 June - C12 (La Cambre Mode[s]), Brussels - 23.00 - €10 free for members before 01.00 Friends, don’t miss out on this one because it’s surely gonna get funky! DâmFunk, the legend from California will make you dance instantaneously to his damn funky beats (pun intended!). Together with the other artists like Brussels-based Chris Ferreira, the C12 boys will offer you a momentary yet infinite pleasure.

Jerusalem in My Heart 4 June - Ancienne Belgique, Brussels 20.00 - €15 - free for members The collaboration of prolific producer and composer Radwan Ghazi Moumneh with Canadian visual artist Charles-André Coderre is something otherworldly. Known for their extraordinary audiovisual approach to music, Jerusalem in My Heart’s style clashes modern electronic music with Middle-Eastern instruments in melancholy and enigmatic soundscapes.

9

Sunwatchers + Bààn 5 June - La Zone (Collectif Mental), Liège 20.00 - €8 - free for members New York’s The Sunwatchers play ‘the perfect soundtrack to smash capitalism and fix our broken system thru sonic catharsis and revolution’. The same ingredients of free-jazz, punk rock and psychedelic rock they use can be found in the music of Bààn. The sound of a distorted Rhodes-piano floating over bass-heavy pads and a steady groove, is reminiscent of Melanie de Biasio or Jozef Dumoulin.

Scott Gilmore + Robbing Millions 6 June - KulturA, Liège 20.00 - €16 - free for members Californian pop experimentalist Scott Gilmore weaves shimmering melodies with lush guitar lines, creating not only a plush, vintage-tinged soundscape, but a whole entire mood not unlike that feeling when your face is pressed up against the warm side of the pillow on a Sunday morning. If that sounds like your vibe, head on down to KulturA to catch him live alongside Brussels indie outfit Robbing Millions.

Strangelove Buttechno + Festival - Day 1 Carcass Identity 7 June - Het Bos, Antwerp 19.00 - €12 - free for members Strangelove Festival has plenty of gay days to offer and you can join one for free! Three short films by Barbara Hammer, a queer cinema pioneer, will be accompanied live by Verveine. Unfortunately the day has to end, but Bear Bones, Lay Low’s magically weird tunes will surely elevate you till the end.

Gaye Su Akyol 7 June - De Roma, Antwerp 20.00 - €16 - free for members Gaye Su Aykol is one of the freshest acts in the new Turkish psychedelic scene. On her latest, critically acclaimed album, Istikrarlı Hayal Hakikattir, she effortlessly combines contemporary rock and electronica with Turkish Folk. For fans of Derya Yildirm, Selda Bagcan and Altin Gun.

8 June - LaVallée (Actionnaires x Under My Garage), Brussels 20.00 - €8 - free for members Buttechno, aka Pavel Milyakov, Russian electronic wizard takes minimal techno to a whole different level by mixing it with soundscapes, dub and acid. He’ll join forces with Carcass Identity, the Brussels-based collaboration between Matthieu Levet (Carrageenan, Pizza Noise Mafia) and Ernesto González (Bear Bones, Lay Low) resulting in raw, dub-infused and cosmic psychedelic electronics. A weird but definitely epic night ahead.

Vera + Gols + Samuel Kerridge Epsilove + + Onrust Mika Oki + more 9 June - C12, Brussels 23.00 - €10 free for members before 01.00 The experienced and stylish Vera, one half of tropical electronic duo Syracuse, plays live. 15 June - C12 (Le Bureau Electronique), Brussels - 23.00 - €10 free for members before 01.00

Looks like C12 is going to wear us out to the max this month. Samuel Kerridge’s ultra-energetic, explosive live performance at Dekmantel last year was one of the absolute highlights: be prepared for some high-class industrial techno. Kortrijk’s Onrust makes a perfect match, being one of Belgium’s best kept secrets in psych/ drone industrial dancefloor music.

Lone + Djrum + Neon Chambers Le Motel + Matthew Herbert + more 14 June - C12, Brussels 23.00 - €15 free for members before 01.00

Three ultra good producers playing on one night! The R&S Records-affiliated Lone has created his own world over the years, releasing hip hop, house, jungle. London’s Djurm has been prolific over the years too and his latest album, Portrait with Firewood, is wickedly interesting, combining and mixing electronic music and chamber music on one record. Le Motel is one of Belgium’s finest – enough stuff.

15 June - C12 (Voltage Festival), Brussels 23.00 - €10 free for members before 01.00 Neon Chambers is the promising new outfit of electronic music geniuses Sigha and Kanding Ray. Some vague YouTube videos from their world premiere at Berlin Atonal last year were already enough to convince us. Local heroes on the line-up: C12 & Deep In House resident Kafim and founder and label manager of Form and Function Parallel Circuit.

LifeSnacks 16 June - St Paulus School, Ghent 13.00 - €25 50% discount for members at the door Never in a million years would we ever dare to dream about partying at school, right? Well, LifeSnacks not only dares to dream it, but also does it. This year marks the second edition of the openair festival LifeSnacks, hosted in the gardens of the St Paulus School in Ghent. A second stage is added this year, and the music will range from international artists to local diggers. A no-nonsense get-together under open skies!

Sit + Priku + Adema 21 June - C12, Brussels 23.00 - €10 free for members before 01.00 Romanian DJ Priku brings groove like nobody else, pushing the limits of minimalism into a whole new atmosphere while creating a set that moves smoothly towards upbeat sounds. He will be joined by magnetic French force Adema, who will capture the audience with his style in between house and minimal techno.

15

Planetary Assault System + Wata Igarashi + Eclair Fifi + more 22 June - C12, Brussels 23.00 - €10 free for members before 01.00 Luke Slater, aka Planetary Assault System, is one of the iconic legends of techno. Fifteen years into his career, he decided to play his latest album, Straight Shooting, released last March, live. He will be joined by Japanese DJ and sound producer Wata Igarashi, whose subtle techno will dazzle you; Norite co-founder & techno enthusiast Lunar Convoy; French composer and performer Neila, and much more! Not a night to be missed.

Ava Luna 23 June - Botanique, Brussels 19.30 - €11 - free for members Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, this synth-funk band will sweep you off your feet! Through mixing of elements from different genres, they conjure up a unique atmosphere with its own signature style. Having released six albums already, with a wide variety of influences, you’ll surely find something you like in the mix.

Terrence Dixon + Aux88 live + PLO Man + more 28 June - C12, Brussels 23.00 - €15 free for members before 01.00 Born in Detroit, Terrence Dixon knows his stuff. Recognisable thanks to his expertise in minimal design, his music has a preamble, a peak and an end, showing us that there is a story behind techno. Also from Detroit, Aux88 is a duo formed by Keith Tucked and Tommy Hamilton, who specialised in electro and bass-heavy techno, making them pioneers in that matter. They will be playing their recent EP, Technology, live. They will be joined by Belgium-based DJs Walrus and Jakob.

kick-start the night with their lip-smacking ‘geeky noise-rock’ goodness. Following suit is veteran drum hero/ multi-instrumentalist Charles Hayward whose prolific, experimental-leaning discography is simply the stuff of legend. Argos is screening a series of ten short films made by Brussels-based American artist Peter Downsbrough to coincide with his new exhibition set to kick off at Botanique this summer. Ranging from one to 30 minutes, the videos provide a direct link to OVERLAP/S which showcases the artist’s discipline-blurring flair for bridging the gap between photography and sculpture using lines and typography.

There all is order and beauty Until 14 July - Argos, Brussels 11.00-18.00 - €6 - free for members The third and last exhibition of the series exploring the dialectic between photographic and moving images in the works of the Argos Collection explores streets, hinterlands and landscapes. Iconic and universally recognisable images are rediscovered, at the same time contemplating the way in which a specific environment can shape our behaviour and imagination.

Aphasia, Jelena Jureša Until 17 July - Argos, Brussels 11.00 - €6 - free for members In her latest three-part film installation Aphasia, Ghent-based visual artist Jelena Jureša delves into Europe’s collective silence centred around Belgian colonialism, the Holocaust and the Yugoslavian wars. With help from stills and moving images, she hopes to give us a nudge in the fight against these historical amnesias, the chronic speechlessness when it comes to our society’s deep-rooted injustice, racism and intolerance.

Ann-Sophie Dewaele

‘I refuse to believe in “I cannot do this”’

Ann-Sophie Dewaele 25 Judging from the list of things she occupies herself with, Ann-Sophie Dewaele is one busy bee. Next to her full-time job as a 3D artist, she’s one of the instigators of the feminist and queer scene in Ghent and she also plays guitar in the allfemale estro-punk band Kuthumeur. Together with like-minded peers, Dewaele co-organises Queer Pride, Queerkoorts, Queer Christmas and the Queer Space evenings at Plek – for which she hosts debates around inclusiveness and safe spaces. She’s also at the core of Girls go BOOM, a feminist collective that says fuck you to the ‘dick fest’ that is the music world. If all of that that isn’t enough, Dewaele hopes to shoot her first independent short film this year. @annsophie.dewaele Photo shot by Linde Stevens 20 @linde_stevens_

Antoine Grenez 25 A rookie no more. Antoine Grenez is a conceptual photographer, principally working around nature and how to fictionalise it through weird and unintelligible elements, playing with the imagination of the spectator, and thus their interpretation. Affiliated with Chanoir, a Brussels-based pluridisciplinary artists’ collective that runs a clothing brand and throws dark rave parties; Grenez, @mia.w.v.d and @o.baybay are the masterminds behind its visual identity. Chanoir recently took over C12 to host a night with Giant Swan. And C12 is putting more work on Grenez’s plate: he’ll be employed as the club’s new art curator beginning in September. @grnz__ Photos shot by Elies Van Renterghem 26 @vaer.elies

Astrid Collectief +/- 20 Astrid Collectief consists of 20 young men representing almost every branch of art, ranging from musicians and fashion designers to graffiti artists, graphic designers and actors. They are visual artists slash performers looking to communicate in a different way. This mishmash of disciplines provides an interesting synergy, continuously influencing one another. Named after the park where it all began, the Ghent Koningin Astridpark, this group of buddies is productive as hell, and they look like they’re having a lot of fun while doing it. On 23 June they’re exhibiting at DE VLOER in Ghent. They will be showcasing their performances, exhibitions and experiments at DOK, and they’ll be partaking in Batastunt at Gentse Feesten this Summer. At the end of August the collective will co-host a new arts festival with four other collectives, called KONVOOI, in Bruges. @as.collectief Photos shot by Valerie De Backer 22 @valerie.debacker

BROEIPLAATS

32

BROEIPLAATS 20-25 With spaces for creative youth fast disappearing, STELPLAATS is what a city like Leuven desperately needed. It’s an inventive reuse of the old bus depot, housing a skatepark, a club venue, a bike shop and BROEIPLAATS, among others. The latter is an artist residency programme that offers emerging talents free-of-charge studio space to experiment under professional supervision by the six artists who run the atelier. BROEIPLAATS aims to present art in a different, moving, clumsy, vibrant and inharmonious manner. This summer, five new artists will reside here and exhibit their work in September. But you can swing by for lectures, workshops and the BROEICAFE as well! @broeiplaatsleuven Photos shot by Gelique Pirard 20 @gelique2.0

Cultural Workers 27+ Cultural Workers is a labour crew of three friends hailing from Brussels who’re not afraid of rolling up their sleeves. CWS is Lény Bernay, Tiphaine Larrosa and Christelle Bonnet, also known as Jardin, Summer Satana and Genesis Addiction. Through events and publications, they propose their Yes Future alternative to our capitalistic society by means of feelings, heat, poetry and spreading love. New videos for the latest Jardin EP, One World One Shit, are on the way and together with Daya Halle, they’re currently curating a new Cultural Workers Show bringing a live-performed magazine with talks, poetry, live music and video art. Previous collaborators were Leaving Living Dakota, Filles de Blédards, Poxcat, Roxanne Maillet and Luz de Amor amongst others. @cultural.workers Photos shot by Rashidam Nassyrova 23 @nassyrova.rashidam

House Of Lux

House Of Lux 20-27 Serving a fresh take on drag, the mission of the five queens of House Of Lux is clear: they aspire to polish their Queerly Beloved shows by making them bigger, better and more fabulous, and to bring their gigs to venues in Belgium and abroad. Apart from those ambitions, they want to keep the momentum going in their hometown, helping the Ghent queer scene to grow through their monthly shows and parties. Catch Mauve Lux, Susan From Grindr, Electra, Scandi Louse and Krietjur performing at a bunch of exciting events and festivals in the coming months. @houseoflux_be @mauve_lux @susanfromgrindr @electra_grams @scandilouse @krietjur Photos shot by Lisa Ahenkona 22

Already checked off: Playboi Carti, Frank Ocean, Gunna, the controversial rapper 6ix9ine and many more. Isengard 22-25 Brussels art collective Isengard is the latest addition to the already rich art scene of capital city Bru-Bru. Now consisting of 12 contributors from all different artforms, it was formed by Loic Le Hécho, Vinessett, Llanto and Jules Rousselet at the art school Erg in Ixelles. They felt it was time to expose their work and so the Isengard Guilde was born and led them to participate at the Feet First Fair and the Fanzines Festival in Paris. Unrested, the crew is already brewing plans to throw more events. Where were they taking the hobbits again? Right. Josse Pyl

43

Josse Pyl 28 Josse Pyl examines the intuition behind our perception of the world, showing the machinery behind the signs and sounds who connect one person to another. His devices, drawings and objects can be seen as characters or symbols, all part of a story. Physical grammar from a separate linguistic world, making familiar forms of communication both tangible and alienating. Next to exposing his work, Pyl is teaching at KASK, the school he attended himself before heading to Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem. Between 2017-2018 Pyl was an artist-in-residence at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he currently lives and works. From September onwards he’s becoming a guest tutor at the new Approaching Language Master program at the Sandberg Institute there. Curious about his work? Come and visit the 019 pavilion during the Biennale van België 21-30 June at Floraliënhal or his solo exhibition at the Brakke Grond until 7 July. @jossepyl Photos shot by Lonneke van der Palen @lonnekevanderpalen

Jozefien Wouters is a journalist who keeps you on your toes, throwing little electrical shocks of weirdness at you. She brings aesthetics to journalism and makes it personal without being subjective. Writing as a freelancer mainly for Knack Focus, she operates on the boundaries of pop culture, taking a fancy to bubblegum-y kitsch, trashiness and internet cultural trends that come and go. Make Dutch lyrics great again! A lot of Belgian hip hop and r&b artists choose to sing in English for different reasons. But not IKRAAAN. She proves it’s possible to express yourself in Dutch and produce a fresh sound at the same time. Hailing from Mechelen, this dark r&b and soul-trap glitter princess is on the rise to become a future star. With the upcoming release of her first EP Happy Pill, filled with songs wherein she opens up her heart on her personal demons, IKRAAAN is more than ready to take on the crowd, blow them away and make her childhood dreams come true. @glitterprincess718 Photo shot by AurÊlie Bayad 24 @untitlednoise

Julia Garcia Rubio 25 Julia Garcia Rubio was born and raised in Liège, but crossed the language border to pursue her dream of being a goldsmith and jewellery designer. After graduating in jewellery design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, she moved to Ghent and started working as a goldsmith in Hasselt for Huis Pauwels Spaenjers. In her own atelier she designs jewellery with her own touch. She mixes unusual materials with precious metals, with an eye for architectural lines and organic shapes. At the moment, she’s set on starting her own business and making an engagement ring collection. So, if you’re planning on asking… @juliagarciarubio Photo shot by Ines Bodlovic 23 @inesbodlovic

Lil Skid 19

Trappers on the rise in Belgium? You bet! With potential and aspiration to make it big? Sure thing! Lil Skid came to conquer. And he’s not lacking the blunt confidence expected from a rapper: according to him, he’s a fallen angel, here to make the universe a better place. Making music since the age of 12, his career really took off this year with his first – and solid – EP called Skye’s. This Ghent boy with Ghanaian roots plainly plans to keep on putting in work, and it might bear fruit. @kwamelilskid Photos shot by Bibi Euse 32 @misseuse

‘In the future, people gonna get healed just by listening to my music or just hearing my name. That’s all I want’

Zoé Médard 25 The 25-year-old visual artist Zoé Médard studied video, but never felt like sticking to one discipline. She’s working on an art movie, as well as installations and sculptures made out of lost and found objects such as textiles (check her flag!). Through her artistic practice she explores ‘superficial territory’. Everyday life is her playground; her instinct is what she follows. She transforms what she finds in her environment to discover its opportunities and show something real. Even though she has some exhibitions and projects coming up, Médard mostly likes to live in the moment and keep her artistic journey on course. @zoemedard Photos shot by Alessandra Ruyten 27 @alessandraruyten

Maame Nsiah 26

Antwerp-based stylist and creative director Maame Nsiah uses her skills, knowledge and passion for fashion to create the best suiting looks. She works predominantly with music artists like the rising Belgian-Carribean singer Charlotte Adigéry – she did the styling for her music videos ‘Paténipat’ and ‘High Lights’. Nsiah aims to inspire others to embrace every version of themselves by making diversity the name of the game when creating. Her goal? Inspire others with her work. Her rule of thumb? Always stay true to yourself and your gut feeling. @nsiiah Photos shot by Tatjana Henderieckx 23 @henderieckxtatjana

Maude Van Dievoet

‘Recently someone told me I have a certain truthfulness,

which was the best compliment 53 I’d ever received’

Maude Van Dievoet 24 Antwerp model-slash-stylist Maude Van Dievoet may have gone off to live in London to follow her dreams, but style-wise she stayed true to her roots. As a diehard supporter of the Antwerp Six and their legacy, she only invests in qualitative and timeless pieces. Van Dievoet describes her style as something old, something new, something borrowed and something stolen from her mother’s wardrobe. Van Dievoet models for The Hive Management and The Claw Models, two big international agencies. But she’s determined to remain grounded. She wants to be remembered for her work and stay true to herself. As for what the future holds? Every day’s a surprise, she says… @maudevd Photos shot by Tiny Geeroms 25 @tinygeeroms

Maja Ajmia Yde Zellama 25 Maja Ajmia Yde Zellama, who goes by the moniker Tartelet-Harissa, is a filmmaker and one of the founding members of Bledarte, a Brussels feminist collective consisting of women of colour who aim to empower young people from immigrant backgrounds through art and culture. Her work as a cinematographer and for Bledarte are intertwined by theme: minority representation, masculinity, identity, communities and love. She’s stoked about her upcoming short film, on which she’s been working for a while, and the second edition of the Bledarte Festival taking place in September. Probably not the last we’ll hear from her or Bledarte. @tartelet_harissa Photos shot by Lauren Lizinde 18 @beingwestern

Osei Bantu

Osei Bantu Like snakes shedding their skin, a part of the Antwerp-based Konichiwa Crew emerged as Osei Bantu, an urban art collective that wants to inspire by showcasing dance, deejaying, music, art and spoken word, with influences of their own ethnicities and other cultures. Founded in 2015 by David Ramos Joao, Jay Joffrey Anane, Lito Silva and Jonas Garrido Verwerft, Osei Bantu’s mission is bringing people and art together at events all over Antwerp and beyond. They host the party concept ‘ewaja’, where they can express their love for the sounds they’re listening to. @oseibantu Photos shot by Pauline Colleu 28 @paulinecolleu

Shervin Sheikh Rezaei 24 (The fear of) losing control over your own body and mind is hard to cope with. Conceptual architect Shervin Sheikh Rezaei channels her personal chaos into structural order through her profession. Designing things of her own will and solidly sealing objects has always acted as a necessary meditation for her. Sheikh Rezaei works as an architect for Jan Vylder and Inge Vinck, and her thesis ‘ENSEMBLE: An architecture of the inbetween’ will be released as a book by publisher MER this autumn. No matter what the future holds, she wants to keep on dreaming, creating and falling in love. @shervinsheikhin Photo shot by Siene Hollemans 21 @sienehollemans

Yaqine Hamzaoui 23 One of the most promising photo-/videographers of the moment is Yaqine Hamzaoui. She shoots distinct portraits and video clips for different artists and collectives, mainly Brussels hip-hop sprouts like Blu Samu, Martha Da’ro and Miss Angel. For a year she’s been the house photographer of Ancienne Belgique. And things are moving fast for this coolass shutterbug who has a keen eye for the beauty of imperfection. She was one of the seven young photographers who got selected by the respected Belgian fashion house Natan to capture one of their couture pieces and she won! She also won a VICE competition which gave her a spot at the first VICE Expo held during Listen! Festival. Oh, and together with singer Martha Da’ro, Hamzaoui forms Visual Poetry, a creative playground producing photos and music videos. If you’re on the look for a fun and special collab, give Hamzaoui a call. You won’t regret it. @yaqine.raw Photos shot by Catherine Lemblé 28 @catherine.lemble
