As we cross the thick middle section of a most contentious year, the usual strategies must be temporarily cast aside to peruse areas new and unexpected. Therefore, sometime this midsummer we sent an open call to the Subbacultcha audience and supporters and asked them to send us their recent output, whatever that represented for them. The response was humbling: imagery so rich and diverse which ranged from intricate illustration to inventive portraiture to visionary meldings of media. This publication is the result of what we've received in our mailbox: a glimpse into the gleaming potential of the community we’re unequivocally lucky to be part of. In Blue-Eyed, Blond-Haired Lander again… • You will realise that you mistook their lack of hostility or standoffishness as acceptance or understanding. Conceal your surprise and ire as best you can. • Spark a kinship with the infant there. This will create an inlet for others to be more comfortable but remember the child will refuse to kiss you goodbye, as is the custom. This is not because you are black. They will explain to you why. • Nod solemnly, if you still can. This will become increasingly difficult. • Your smile may become a grimace if you are not careful. Beware!

en ik probeer me diens leven voor te stellen ik probeer dat leven te voelen de lichtheid van het onbekende doet mij herademen net als bij het uitzicht de opluchting dat ik in die paar seconden iemand anders ben en mijn lichaam heb achter gelaten aan de zwaarte ontsnapt, als een lafaard Het klinkt als iets ongelukkig, om te willen vluchten in een ander bestaan ik hoef er geen psychologische analyse over dat is gewoon wie ik ben voor zover ik weet wie ik ben Ik hou wel van mij hoor soms is het gewoon vermoeiend om heel de tijd mezelf te zijn sommigen drinken om weg te zijn van zichzelf, om te herademen en aan de zwaarte te ontsnappen ik kom altijd terug waar zijn de achtergelaten kinderen van het latere zelf? Hij is weggelopen voor wie hij was nooit meer terug gekeerd de zwaarte maakte plaats voor een allesomvattende leegte het vluchtte gaf hem een onverzadigbare dorst, een verzoening met het verloochende zelf waar schaamte en trots samen tooghangen Ik had hem graag ontmoet voor hij vluchteling was ik verlies hem hij loopt verder en verder weg Ik ben een opgever alsof ik moe ben moe van naast hem te lopen zijn zwaarte te proberen dragen moe van de wedstrijd die het werd we lijken op elkaar maar ik ken hem niet Ik kan enkel proberen zijn leven te voelen ik heb er het raden naar, maar misschien heeft zijn drinken ervoor gezorgd dat ik nooit dorst zal hebben, en daar, hef ik het glas op.

Een ver uitzicht heeft me altijd een gevoel van opluchting gegeven alsof ik uit het verste puntje op de horizon, troost put daar ben ik licht leeg, ontdaan van mijn zwaarte zwaarte waar ik mij soms zo bedrukt in voel ze weegt op mijn borst en ik hap naar adem ‘Daar ginds’, is als zuurstof opluchting dat dit het niet persé is, er is daar nog iets Ik wil ten allen tijden kunnen vluchten als een lafaard dat het daar niet beter is, dat weet ik want welk doel dient vluchten als je de zwaarte overal mee naartoe zeult Ik kan zo verlangen naar verre oorden en dan bedoel ik niet eens ver, gewoon weg van hier weg van het bekende weg van de jupiler de belga de tranen weg van de kermis de geur de blikken de tragiek ervan trekt mij aan ik romantiseer het, om de tragische realiteit te verdragen tragiek klink mooi het woord tragisch, is gewoon tragisch traag, alles herhaalt zich, traag, van vader op zoon Ik heb hier nooit gehoord ’t heeft mij nooit gekend het is waar schaamte en trots samen aan de toog hangen het is waar ik geboren ben, en niet waar ik sterven zal ik wil naar een andere plek de velden, een kerkje de zee ik ga alleen en ik vertrek net op tijd, voor het teleurstelt, voor het écht word als een lafaard Ik verplaats mij graag in andere mensen dan kies ik iemand op straat, of op ’t station

In Gent Under the thick cover of the dark, the music comes. It hangs in the milky warmth of the night sky, the wind picks it up whriling and spinning. It calms down defeated in the foreign land of your withered bed. It knows now, it is on the edge of paying for its debts. Breathe in the last chords of the fading song, dear friend, it is yet fueled by the upcoming light of the dawn. We have two extra minutes or even more, before the unveiling morning sound breaks in it is the shuddering door of the early tram number four that clangs, passing down the street.

Haar lippen Als vrolijk jankende katjes ontkurkten ze de champagne. Het was allemaal moeilijk geweest maar nu kwam de opluchting. Het was allemaal zo kut geweest, maar nu was het eindelijk voorbij. Glazen vergaderde in de handen van een gillende menigte terwijl de schuimende belofte van een feestje kapot spatte op de aders van een dronken blik. Tongen schoten in het rond terwijl iedereen dekking zocht voor de overmaat aan plezier. Zij zat daar. Tussen de anderen. Haar lippen lokten jonge gasten naar de afgrond. Er werd gekropen zonder einde.
