editor’s letter

Welcome to our spring issue

Bring it on for a style packed spring! And from me - hello! Having joined the team at STYLEetc this year I am well underway with a new and stylish beginning, and am excited to let you in on what this new issue holds... -----------March 8th celebrates International Women’s Day, and in tribute we have filled our pages with stories from amazing and inspiring women. The date marks a time to look back at the women who have gone before us, as well as those who may still need us to fight for equality. So for all of you that celebrate the day; lets shout it out with power by tweeting #girlpower2014! (p.60) This issue profiles a new star in Hollywood. STYLEetc snagged a lucky few minutes with the talented Victoria Summer on p.18. Soon to be seen in the ‘Transformers’ movie, and having warmed our hearts playing Julie Andrews in the acclaimed film ‘Saving Mr. Banks’, Victoria tells us how she made it big, and kept cool.

Spring Beauty Hit p. 50 Photographer : Tim Johnson

Our stylish guest is the intellectually awe inspiring Prof. Helen Storey. Her interview reveals how sees the future – inspiringly artistic, and with a good sprinkling of science, and technology (p.9). Taking health seriously we gain insights from Julie Neville, her new store in the Trafford Centre, ‘Winning Naturally’, champions a change in the way we eat on p.54, while the empowering owners of The Yoga Lounge give us a taste of the Hot Yoga phenomenon in the city centre, and tune us into our inner personal strength (p.58). And to round out the issue we’ve injected a good dose of stylish romance, fantastic fashion, and bright-eyed beauty. Whether in celebration of St. Valentine’s Day or just as an excuse to get glammed up, celebrate a bit of romance with STYLEetc and special friends! To get in touch please tweet us @style_etc. We’d love to be connected to you all, our stylish readers.

A Stylish Guest

Helen Storey

by Anna-Louise Gilhooley

Professor Helen Storey MBE is an award winning artist and designer based in London. Having originally trained with Valentino and Lancetti in Rome, then going on to launch her own clothing label, Helen built her reputation in the fashion world before moving into collaborative ventures between the creative industries. An advocate for combining art, fashion, science, and ways of thinking, Helen is speaking at the Selfridges ‘Festival of Imagination’.

When was your ‘big break’? Nowadays I think a ‘big break’ is being fortunate enough to be born with a creative mind, and finding a way to live by your passion. There have been a few key moments in my career though, where specific people came into my life, and irrevocably changed and shaped my destiny. What does your role entail? I work between the worlds of art, science, and technology. These are all individually important creative industries that very few people link together. My job involves research as each project I do has an issue at the heart of it. I seem to have become some kind of a broker between different worlds of activity! In a sense it’s a deep listening role. What’s your favourite part of your job? Meeting and talking with brilliant minds and creating something out of that – something beautiful that we all want to use. That’s the plan! How much time do you spend travelling? It varies. Work is the one that takes me abroad the most. I try to find space to walk between places, and I think of this as a type of travel.

What made you want to work in the creative industry? It was a natural home for me, having grown up in an environment where drawing, painting, play and creative activity was all around me. It wasn’t really the draw of ‘industry’ so much as, there has never been any separation for me between the art, and the life.

What is your favourite place to visit? If I’m with people I love, it can be anywhere. That said, sun and great food make me very happy.

What’s your most treasured possession? My biggest treasures aren’t in fixed form. Am I allowed to say love? ..Everything else can burn.

How do you relax? I have been a bit of a Bikram Yoga nut for years and have just recently tried out ‘Fierce Grace’. This practice usually takes me beyond myself and levels everything. I also have a place I walk to on the heath, where hardly anyone goes. It feels like you are standing at the beginning of time.

You’re talking at the Selfridges ‘Festival of Imagination’ about art and science. What inspired you to bring these two fields together? My sister Kate, who is a scientist, and The Wellcome Trust, were the natural forces that first gave me the opportunity to explore bringing these together. Although it’s still an awkward space to occupy on so many levels. Even now there is this sense that in science we have all that is, and all that we are (as best we can know it). Then – in the arts – we get to experience what it means to be human. Only academia keeps them unnaturally apart. But for me it is home.

How would you describe your style? I can’t! Biggest ever fashion splurge? Biggest ever consistent fashion splurge was Biba – the original one! That went on for years. Follow Helen on Twitter

Game On!

Fabulously Floral

The strikingly modern Sports Luxe silhouette celebrates soft jersey fabrics, racer back necklines and neon tones. Emulate the look with this handy Jim Bag, the proceeds of which go to the Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Charity, and this structured pep-hem dress courtesy of ASOS.

Yes, again! But this is a floral trend not as you know it!The concept of the floral print has been transformed this season with the catwalks showcasing a much darker palette of fuchsias and deep purples, amongst 3D floral embellishments set to wow. Missguided have a fabulous range of reasonably priced floral fancies to help you channel this trend. Think Alice in Wonderland meets picnic chic!

Interview

by Xanthe Hutchinson

Model Moment Eleanor Davies bossmodelmanagement.co.uk

Where are you originally from? Saddleworth, it’s a cute little borough between Yorkshire, Lancashire and Greater Manchester. It’s full of hills, sheep and farmers! How were you discovered? Senior booker Lauren Mellor found me outside Aldi in the Manchester Arndale! I suppose that’s one to tell the grandchildren...

Who is your fashion inspiration and why? I don’t really have a fashion inspiration, I prefer to be more individual rather than copy any one person or look. What is your favourite bar or restaurant in Manchester? Nando’s, definitely Nando’s. It’s the perfect place for any occasion and who doesn’t like chicken? Do you have any pets? I do! I have 2 dogs: Hudson and Lester, 2 cats: Spike and Rosa and 6 chickens: Winnie, Wanda, Dilly, Daffodil, Sheila and Shelley! Favourite food and/or drink? Smoked salmon and coffee, although not together. That’d be disgusting.

by Emma Pilkington

If you weren’t a model, what would you be doing? I’d be studying German and French at Warwick university; I’m doing a gap year now though to pursue my career!

by Xanthe Hutchinson

Portrait image by George Naylor Beach image by Layla Sailor

Since being scouted in the summer, Eleanor has been an e-comm girl learning her trade before her recent placements in London, Paris and Milan. She also featured in STYLEetc’s Autumn 2013 issue!

by Layla Sailor

How do you keep in shape? I go to the gym and I swim, climb, and do yoga. I do find it important however to maintain a healthy balance between eating and exercise, that always comes first.

What is next for you? To work in New York and Tokyo. That’s the dream! by Emily Parker 13

Trend Report

STREET STYLES What to wear to the Fashion Weeks?

Manchester based stylist Siobhan Cooper takes four of the biggest fashion cities and summarises their distinct street styles...

NEW YORK

LONDON

MILAN

PARIS

It’s the first of the Fashion weeks and there is always a battle to be the first person papped in the ‘must have’ item of the season. Then there’s the weather, which can play havoc with wardrobe plans. However, even if it’s snowing and you don’t have ‘that’ Kenzo sweatshirt, the key is to keep it cute and playful but perfectly put together. The New York wardrobe is fun but always very well thought out.

Layer up the craziness and add a dash of high street because there are no rules! It’s not only the big fashion names that get papped at London Fashion Week but also all the army of fashion students and bloggers who take over Somerset House. Don’t worry about wardrobe essentials at LFW, just get creative and brave a fashion forward hair-cut.

This is the perfect time to add a little va-va-voom to day time dressing, Milan is where the fashion world gets dressed up. It’s about sky scrapper heels and that ultimate ‘wow’ outfit. Think Anna Dello Russo and wear an amazing cocktail dress (preferably Dolce & Gabbana) with your favourite pair of Louboutins and your Milan look is good to go!

Failsafe and perfectly gorgeous. The Paris fashion Week ‘ideal outfit’ includes skinny jeans, a striped Breton style top and blazer (with shoulder pads… obviously), worn with an elegant pair of heels. If Emmanuelle Alt is your style icon then this look is easy. Great tailoring is a must and brands to be seen in include Balmain and Isabel Marant. It’s simple, sophisticated and totally cool!

by Siobhan Cooper ILLUSTRATIONS BY ELLIE SUTTON

THIS PAGE IS DEDICATED TO GEMMA

If you are lucky enough to be a regular attendee at the Fashion Weeks worldwide, or just take inspiration from cities renowned for their street style, you will know that the trends on the street can be as captivating as the shows themselves.

STYLEetc talk to Victoria Summer, the British actress who broke Hollywood to play Julie Andrews’ Mary Poppins role in the eagerly awaited film ‘Saving Mr. Banks’. Victoria is also starring in the upcoming movie ‘Transformers’, due for UK release this summer.

Portrait image credit : Joe Deangelis

Interview by Emily Parker

Feature Interview

How does it feel to play such an iconic and loved character? It’s an absolute honour. She is, of course, well loved and I really wanted to do her justice! It was an incredible transformation in the make up chair, firstly with the wig, but they also completely changed my eyebrows and shaded my face. Wearing the gown and the jewels for the première scene was magical. I felt like a princess!

‘Saving Mr Banks’ tells the story of how Mary Poppins was brought to life straight out of the imagination and pages of it’s writer P.L. Travers. The film is emotive, with scenes of comedy and hints at many things that all Mary Poppins fans will love. As the film goes on, you see the Sherman Brothers compose the songs that are so iconic to the film today, 50 years after it was released.

“ Being a success in Hollywood is no easy task and there are many ways to get distracted. ”

Thanks to Brandi George at Persona PR for allowing this interview to take place.

How was it acting alongside Tom Hanks? I can be quite shy depending on who I’m meeting. Tom is one of those actors I respect so much and although I’ve acted since childhood, I honestly never expected to be sharing a screen with him so soon into my career here in Hollywood. Of course meeting him was somewhat daunting and I wished I had worked out something a little more important to say other than “Hello, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” What is your favourite Disney film, (apart from Mary Poppins)? Fantasia! Was that 1940?! Incredible music! Timeless Disney brilliance! Who do you take your fashion inspiration from? Audrey Hepburn, firstly. Classic, timeless, elegance. It’s simple... No one’s trying too hard. I think Victoria Beckham is also doing an amazing job and I would love to wear some of her designs on the red carpet. Who is your favourite fashion designer and why? I have so many! Right now Sebastian Gunawan has some amazing pieces. I wore a dress of his to the première of Saving Mr. Banks in LA and I loved it. The workmanship is exquisite. What piece of makeup couldn’t you live without? And what’s your favourite perfume? I love Clé de Peau Beauté Concealer in Ivory. It’s a great colour for me. My favourite perfume is Rose Praline by Les Parfums de Rosine from Barney’s.

19

What is your favourite food?

I’m vegan. I love every fun way to eat vegan food that’s gluten free! My favourite restaurants in LA are Cafe Gratitude and Crossroads. What do you miss most about the UK? How often do you come back?

I miss my family! I love being home for Christmas and I try and make that happen every year! I love seeing my Dad, sitting around the dining table at my Mum’s, and eating home cooked food! What is it like to join the cast of ‘Transformers’? And can you give us any clues as to the story and what role you play? When I booked ‘Transformers,’ I was probably the happiest and most excited I’d ever been about any job. It was a whole month after the audition. I was completely surprised and beyond excited. I can’t really say much else! What inspired you to become an actress, singer and model?

Playing Nancy in ‘Oliver’ and Trixie in ‘Daisy Pulls It Off’ at school made me realise I had passion and talent. I never really aspired to being a model - that just came with the singing and acting and was another way to make money. But it’s all fun. What are your tips for anyone trying to become an actress?

Focus. Love what you do. Make sure you are really passionate about it! Being a success in Hollywood is no easy task and there are many ways to get distracted. Set your goal and move aside all barriers. If you go to the premier of one of your films and could take one person, dead or alive, who would you take and why? Tom Cruise. From what I can tell, he is utterly driven, supremely talented and of course handsome!

Behind the Scenes

behind the scenes

of ‘a pretty modern romantic’ photo shoot by Fashion Assistant Leanne Coppock

Shea, keeping the poses playful to capture the spirit of the shoot. Accessories were really the understated champions of the look; bringing personality and fun. From leopard hats to green lace ears, anything goes when it comes to accessorising a spring time trend.

Our stylist Siobhan Cooper had no trouble throwing the right amount of girly and edgy together to create a casual approach to high end dressing. The look was romantic with classic shapes and a playful twist. The studio shoot, courtesy of photographer Emma Pilkington, became infused with all the energy of the team and amazing model Shea Blake-Thompson, who posed effortlessly. The hours went by like minutes and before we knew it we had a choice of charmingly romantic shots. A care-free, fun shoot made all the more enjoyable by the fantastic team. All in all, it was a breeze to shoot for spring!

Make-up artist Sarah kept it simple and feminine with natural shades to compliment the clothes.

We were armed with a full rail of beautiful clothing thanks to Harvey Nichols Manchester and the Topshop Personal shoppers.

Boutique Confidential

High street shopping can be troublesome when coveting higher quality clothing. Boutiques like Laundry have thrived by delivering in the quest for one-off pieces and affordable designer-esque styles.

Laundry Boutique

The original Laundry store was based in Altrincham, but it now boasts five stores in the North West and London, with no signs of slowing down! Offering an eloquent and sophisticated approach to day time dressing, with a gorgeous range of accessories to compliment, their Manchester store is located on Police Street in the city centre. It is tucked away just off of King Street on an adorably cobbled road. Decorated simplistically, their white walls hold the business mantra ‘Live. Love. Laundry’. Minimalism is key; with the clothes being the focus. Accessories are displayed on baroque dressing tables, giving a vintage edge to the otherwise modern clean lines of the décor. It is completed with an oversized, characteristic mirror inviting the visitor to play dress-up and have fun! The labels are individually sourced by the owners with the aim of always offering an alternate option to the high street. International designs are added to the collection every season and regular customers know to phone ahead to snap up the newest stock as it arrives. The general consensus on Laundry’s style is romantic and feminine. Simple silhouettes and vibrant prints form the staple items, offering shift dresses in an array of patterns, the impression is of a chic cohesive wardrobe, but with plenty of variety to add choice. Taking inspiration from designer brands and classic pieces; you can walk away with a Marc Jacobs inspired daisy dress or Isabel Marant style footwear for a fraction of their muses price. Ornate jewellery balances out the simplicity and tailors each look to your own agenda; large gems with delicate gold detailing and modest tie bracelets set different looks alive. With the inclusive promise of designs from all over the world and a vow to only stock items their staff personally love, it’s easy to see how Manchester’s best kept fashion secret has expanded so quickly. Those with an eye for luxury and a craving for variety and international labels are sure to find something to adore.

{Skin Care}

With the harsh conditions playing havoc with our skin, NARS makeup artist Karen Bielli, gives us her top skin care tips to achieve a healthy glow this winter and keep us looking fresh right through till spring.

top tips

Double cleanse! This will refine and smooth the skin, making your make up look more radiant. Remove makeup with NARS Cleansing Water and Gentle Oil free eye makeup remover and then follow with a face wash or milk cleanser. I love NARS Gentle cream cleanser which doesn’t strip the skin, it leaves it feeling soft and fresh.

Exfoliate! Skin can’t reflect the light and look radiant if it is holding on to dead skin cells. Use NARS Multi Action Hydrating toner on a cotton wool pad in a circular motion to gently exfoliate the skin after cleansing. The enzyme breaks down the bond between the old and new skin cell meaning it can be easily swept away revealing a younger, more luminous skin.

3

Moisturise!

4

Repair!

5

Prime!

NARS Luminous Moisture Cream and Total Replenishing Eye Cream are great for a nourishing skin during the cold weather. Over 30’s should also use an anti-ageing serum under their moisturiser - try NARS Optimal Brightening Concentrate for super smooth and bright skin.

Help your skin once or twice a week by using a treatment. I love NARS Aqua Gel luminous moisture mask to address dehydration. Apply to clean, moisturised skin before bed and sleep in the mask and you’ll wake up with a plump, radiant complexion. This can also be used as a quick fix for 20 minutes before a party.

Always use a primer before you apply your makeup! No makeup artist would ever skip this step and you shouldn’t either if you want your makeup to go on smoothly and last the whole evening! At the moment I’m loving our new Light Optimising makeup primer which contains a super charged boost of our Light Reflective complex, as well as SPF 15, making it great for use in the summer too. Massage a pea sized amount to cleansed, moisturised skin and watch your foundation glide on effortlessly and last for hours.

NARS also offer 20 minute complimentary skin care consultations at their beauty counters so you find the perfect match and ensure your skin is looking healthy and radiant. 53

Natural Born Winners

Julie Neville We meet the family, and learn how to win naturally!

Julie Neville leads by example and shows how clean living can literally save your life. By opening health emporium Win Naturally in Manchester, she’s now showing us all how to do the same.

Most people would feel defeated when told they will have to take prescribed medication for the rest of their life and give up hope, but Julie Neville found another way to handle the news. In order to do so and save herself, she came up with the idea to open a store that would in turn enable others to do the same. The wife of Manchester United and Everton football star Phil Neville, Julie found herself with a prolonged illness which she described as; “a bad place. I just couldn’t get my health back on track by the conventional routes, and if I’d have felt good on all the drugs they had given me I wouldn’t have looked to go elsewhere, but I didn’t”.

will make you healthier, or help to keep your weight down while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. People need to gain the knowledge and not just trust faddy diets”. We all know it can be a constant battle to balance healthy eating without over doing and feeling deprived, but luckily Win Naturally has an answer for that too. They have a range of tasty snacks that you don’t have to feel guilty about. Ranging from organic chocolate full of antioxidants to popcorn which is air popped rather than oil popped, giving it the lowest fat levels possible, and there’s plenty of choice when it comes to taste. Julie really did think of something for everyone when choosing products, there are a lot of intolerance foods available for those with aversions to wheat, dairy, nuts or gluten, which she tells us many customers have already praised.

Luckily she found another answer to her problem; healthy clean living and nutrition. Through making the decision to heal herself through diet and nutrition, Julie realised just how beneficial simple changes could be to her overall health. After just nine months Julie was off the medication she feared she’d have to take forever. After an amazing recovery, she decided to study more about nutrition and explore the health and wellness sector. Realising the potential of her new-found knowledge, she sought a way to pass this information on to others, and as a result Win Naturally was born.

“We’ve had so many positive comments today already where people have said, gosh I really struggle and you’ve got this whole range!, so we’re continuing to search far and wide to make sure we’ve got the best products”. Whether you want to bake your own gluten free cakes or choose the ‘too good to wait for’ pre-made cookies, it really is a one stop shop for healthy additions to your kitchen. And if you don’t feel guilty about the food you definitely won’t about the price. It’s affordable and competitive, so you certainly don’t have to be the wife of a footballer to shop here. With items like organic soup priced at £1.35 and Simplyberry juice at £1.70 per litre it’s easy for us all to get on the healthy bandwagon in 2014. Aside from food there’s also a huge range of supplements and beauty products available, including organic fake tan which is free from the harmful chemicals which can be found in some other brands.

Opened in Manchester’s Trafford Centre in October, the store aims to provide everyday people with simple solutions and additions to their lifestyle without preaching or giving false promises. Husband Phil Neville told us; “People think if something says diet on it then it works, but that might not be the best thing for you. We’re not preaching that this is all you should eat but there are a lot of things here that you can add to your diet that

The Yoga Life

~

by Lauren Walker

STYLEetc’s Lauren Walker attended a session at The Yoga Lounge and interviewed the experts that live and breath hot yoga..

Going with the theme of International Women’s Day and the celebration of inspiring women, owners Jane Dowler and Nisha Srivastrava are providing the community with a fabulous array of classes and new experiences. Jane heads up the exceptional Yoga selection whilst Nisha leads the way on all things Pilates.

J

ust as the name suggests, the Yoga Lounge in Manchester is a devoted and spiritual yoga facility, mixed with a welcoming lounge look and feel. But the lounge doesn’t only offer yoga and hot yoga, it boasts an amazing timetable that includes the new Garuda Flow class as well as group Reformer Pilates (the regime that made Miley Cyrus buff in the buff for her Wrecking Ball video). Located in the quickly developing and improving Great Northern Warehouse, the Yoga Lounge is truly leading the way in this area. By offering clients a fabulous atmosphere to stay fit and stay connected in a world that has us constantly jumping.

58

Fitness Feature Instructor extraordinaire Jane Dowler invited STYLEetc to experience their signature series class dubbed the ‘Hot Yoga 60.’ It was truly ‘revitalising’ if we had to use just one word, and not intimidating in the least (even with Jane’s devoted class, whose bodies are proof of their commitment!). We made it through re-charged, and with a sunny temperament on a chilly weekday evening...

ensuring the students get enough oxygen during practice. Radiant heat is great for soothing tight muscles as it warms the students – not the air – and is the same heat used in babies’ incubators. Many studios have one or the other; we have the best of both.

After practice we cornered Yogi Jane with a hot series of rapid-fire questions..

Jane busting a move for the camera..

We also offer a variety of classes including our Hot 60 which is a set sequence of 40 postures ensuring beginners get a balanced full body and mind practice. The hot flow to music, and more challenging sequences along with different lengths of classes to suit even the tightest schedule. In my opinion some yoga is better than no yoga. Anything cool, new or exciting coming up for the yoga lounge? Oh Yes! The Reformer Pilates for fitness. Traditionally these machines are perceived as great for rehab, postural correction and a more gentle form of exercise. We are introducing a dynamic, fast paced, high intensity, kick ass, sweat busting workout mid February for the younger market. This incorporates all the assistance benefits of the machines but will work the body hard, making it strong, and lean. Nisha (my partner) has over 16 years experience in the field of Yoga and Pilates and has designed this unique approach.

How long have you been teaching? I qualified in January 2010 and started straight away with my own classes at a yoga center in Liverpool. These were a Vinyasa flow style in a nonhot environment. What is your favourite place or country you’ve practiced and why? Thailand or India, it’s a tough call! I love the east for stilling the mind, whenever I get off the plane in any Eastern country I feel instantly relaxed. I was lucky enough to spend a month in Thailand in 2011 trying many yoga centres. The one that stuck out was Absolute Koh Samui. I also spent time at an amazing retreat in South Goa on Patnem Beach, which was equally as fulfilling.

Any words of wisdom for someone thinking about attending their first hot yoga class but might be a bit apprehensive? Just grab your mat, come on down, and try a Hot 60! All our instructors give modifications so you WILL be able to do the class. I began my yoga journey in 2008 purely to stay physically fit and I must admit really struggled in my first few hot classes, in fact I sat out for about half of my first one. But after 3 or 4 times I got used to the heat and after just 3 months of practice my flexibility had improved ten fold, my body looked leaner, my skin and eyes clearer and more importantly my mind clear and calm.

What sets you apart from other studios? First and foremost we have a unique offering of Hot Yoga and Reformer Pilates, which complement each other perfectly. The unique combined heating system generates heat by infrared, coupled with a ventilation system that brings in fresh humid air,

We thoroughly recommend all our readers go and hang out at The Yoga Lounge!

Full Steam Ahead (Red #1), 2/2, 2012 Photo credit: Peter Mallet

Born in Paris and living and working in Lisbon, Portugal, Vasconcelos’s career as a renowned female contemporary artist has gone from strength to strength. She achieved major international recognition when her sculpture The Bride, a 5m high chandelier comprised of 25,000 tampons, was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2005. Three of Vasconcelos’ sculptures entitled Full Steam Ahead will be shown together for the first time. These kinetic sculptures in the shape of flowers have steam irons for petals which open and close to mimic the movement of real flowers. Red, yellow and green, the colours of the Portuguese flag, the sculptures slowly unfurl, hissing and releasing steam to create a dramatic, hot and humid robotic flower garden. This new exhibition features the world première of a monumental new textile work that has been specially commissioned for Manchester Art Gallery’s atrium and staircase. This comprises of brightly coloured organic forms that will cascade down the gallery’s stairs from the main exhibition galleries and spill over the balconies into the atrium. Recycled clothes and industrially produced textiles are embellished with Portuguese tassels, crystals, and beads in a riotous patchwork of patterns, shapes and textures. It is a striking contrast to the straight, clean lines of the glass atrium. This exhibition provides unexpected and thoughtful connections with both the historical architecture of the building and with works of art from the city’s collections. GETTING THERE From Manhcester Quatar Airlines via Doha

Majestic Japan

From London KLM via Amsterdam

Words and images by Ellie Sutton

For technology and fashion geeks alike the Japanese capital – Tokyo – is a place of fascination. The archetypal shiny tech utopia, where there is no convenience un-provided or gadget not worth making. Concentrating over 13m people (5m more than London) the city of Tokyo is expansive, and in constant motion. As a centre of urban culture it dominates, but there is also a lot more of the traditional Japanese culture within the capital, and much more to explore further afield... CULTURE

98% of the population in Tokyo is native Japanese so expect a change from the multicultural faces of Manchester! The culture has an extremely strong work ethic and high level of tradition woven through all activities, this is based on courtesy and respect. As a tourist, accepting help when offered will make the transition to new sights and sounds a lot smoother. Although bowing is customary when thanking people and parting company, you need only nod your head and smile to make your appreciation known. Getting ‘a bit on the side!’ is not expected or accepted for any profession in Japan, so there is no need to tip, in fact, don’t even try! FASHION

Both for people spotting and shopping, Tokyo is a city that draws fashion obsessives. While it is true that the school-girl (gyaru) dress code is extremely popular, this is mixed with a high awareness of fashion, and quality. It’s rare to find a worn-out trainer or ill-fitting suit on the streets of Tokyo. You will find street styles that have a sense of the absurd, and timeless styles too. SHOPPING

Bring another suitcase is all I can say! Clothing is an affordable hobby and holiday pastime with prices cheaper than comparable UK labels. For high street fashion hit Ginza and Shibuya (of the famous busy crossing). These are retail centres for western and popular brands, but off side streets you will find quality independents too, stylish labels and attentive customer service with a smile. For gadgets and the ‘otaku’ (cosplay and comic-con) scene, you should head to Akihabara or Harajuku where you will find

multi-leveled complexes and Afflecks style mazes of treasures indicated with neon signs arranged one above the other in traditional Tokyo style! Take the overland TR line to the Rainbow Bridge for quirky gifts and a more western shopping mall experience. After a scenic route over the water to the reclaimed island called Odaiba ‘Diver City Tokyo Plaza’ can be found easily, guarded by a life-sized statue of Gundam! For high end fashion, art boutiques, and book stores, Roopongi Hills are the shopping districts for you. This is also where many high flying career men and women in Tokyo work, and socialise.

The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) on futuristic Odaiba showcases new and advancing technologies from medicine to interactive gaming. You can see the Honda robot ASIMO in action. It will leave you feeling inspired, awed, and optimistic about the future. If you came to see art by the Japanese masters visit The National Museum of Modern Art located near the Imperial Palace Gardens. It is well known for it’s collection of scrolls showing the change from traditional motifs to more expressive and decorative uses, and the first depictions of animals as art.

FOOD

Traditionally the diet is fish and rice based, with salty soups, barbeque, pork and ramen noodles which have become very popular as a staple, and often inexpensive meal. At least once during your stay order sushi and try the famous Tokyo tuna. Sushi in a good restaurant should not be served too cold. The Tsukiji Market, where the best fish are sold is now open by appointment to tourists. Trading there starts early, and is serious business as one blue fin tuna can be worth as much as a Porsche! Tokyo’s delicatessen markets are also a great, less intense experience! Many include a wide variety of French pastries and European sweets. Elle magazine sponsor a large food market in Ginza, and Vogue Japan has it’s own restaurant in the modern art district, so food and fashion are very well connected! ART AND CULTURE

When it comes to art, Tokyo offers it all. From shrines hidden in corners of the city where daily rituals and traditional Japanese weddings take place, to cutting edge art and new media.

67

For contemporary art installations and popular culture exhibitions visit the Mori Art Museum. If the art on show doesn’t suit you, there is a great view of the city. A TRIP TO KYOTO

You can take a break from the fast pace and neon lights of the capital to see surrounding sights and landscapes, including Mount Fuji, and the famous gardens in Kyoto. It is popular to visit this city in November when the leaves are the brightest firereds, or in cherry blossom season. I can vouch that the colours, shapes and masterful balance of nature and design is stunning in any season. On the bullet train the journey takes only 2 hours 20 minutes from Tokyo, but I still advise you start early or stay overnight. Walk the Philosopher’s path at a leisurely pace, and soak in as much as possible of the beauty that is the distinctly magical, and majestic Japan.

Indian Tiffin Room by Anna-Louise Gilhooley

Based in Cheadle, the Indian Tiffin Room has become well known for it’s fine and fragrant culinary delights. From full traditional dishes to small and perfectly formed tasters, the authentic flavours of India will compel your taste buds to return for more!

If you haven’t already heard of the Indian Tiffin Room, I urge you to read on. I will confess it’s my latest food obsession, and with good reason... Suresh Urs and his wife Dilek have brought a real taste of India to our local suburb in Cheadle, creating an authentic gastronomic experience. The menu is unique and consists of authentic South Indian dishes such as Dosas (Indian savoury Pancakes), array of Chaats (finger licking good!) and Indo-Chinese food which are all inspired by the bustling streets of India, “where the real India eats!” the owners tell me. The word “Tiffin” originated from British India and refers to a light meal or lunch. Suresh and Dilek explain: “We love the idea and therefore wanted to bring this traditional concept to the UK, and serve the best “Tiffin” dishes, which are still consumed in India to this day!”

Be inspired by what the real India eats..

At Indian Tiffin Room you can expect to find a delicious array of dishes… from light bites to a full meal, and they also serve traditional Thalis (a mini buffet on one plate). While the main curry dishes – Butter Chicken, Kerala Fish Curry and vegetable Biryani – are tasty, full of flavour and minus the grease factor. After many visits to this little Indian gem, and repeat orders of Paneer kebabs, chicken lollipops, and lamb chops, I am hooked! Unfortunately for me, but perhaps making it all the more anticipated, tables are often booked up. You have been warned - pick up the phone in advance!

Chapel St, Cheadle, Cheshire SK8 1BR Tel: 0161 491 2020

There’s no doubt, Indian Tiffin Room is a unique restaurant within the North West, which brings the best parts of Indian street food together, and is served in a contemporary restaurant environment that still gives you the feeling of truly being in India. Get that table booked! indiantiffinroom.com | @indtiffinroom

LOLA LO BAR LAUNCH STYLEetc attended the launch of Manchester’s brand new Tiki Bar and Island Grill.

The likes of Ricky Hatton, Ryan Thomas & Umar ‘Boohoo’ Kamani were present, being entertained by fire breathers and a Polynesian charm.

Flower garland fun, and cocktails with character!

The bar is open daily from 11.30am and serves an array of food and drink, including teriyaki-glazed Big Kahuna burger and Pineapple upside down cake. The cocktails are served in bespoke Tiki drinking vessels or hollowed-out fruits. Our favourites are the Blue Bounty, which tastes like chocolate in a glass and the Easter Island Surprise, which is a great sharing cocktail. The venue is split over three levels, each with its own bars to cut down your waiting time for one of their fab cocktails. There are also two DJ booths and a spacious dance floor so you can soak up the quirky décor while listening to live music and the sound of bongos. There are also hidden fancy dress cupboards and makeup rooms! So for something exotic in Manchester, check out the brilliant Lola Lo!
